Charity roast

AROUND 66 people were present and enjoyed the charity hog roast organised by the Foreign Residents Association of Estepona (AREME).

Those attending were entertained with live music by Karen Danzig in glorious sunshine at Sol y Sierra (otherwise known as Rita’s Bar). The event was sponsored by Blevins Franks and The Experience Group and grateful thanks go to them from the Association.

The organisers also wanted to thank Rita for allowing them the use of her premises.

Many local businesses kindly donated the prizes for the raffle which rai-

sed €600 and, one person present who wishes to remain anonymous, donated €100 on the day for which AREME is very grateful.

The final total raised is still being counted but the Association anticipates that it will be in excess of €1,100. All profits from the raffle will be going to AREME’s charity which, for 2024, is the Estepona soup kitchen which cooks food for local families in need.

The celebration of San Juan is one of the most deeply-rooted festivities of the Costa del Sol, where groups of friends and family gather on the beaches to celebrate the arrival of summer and the shortest night of the year. A multitude of bonfires on the beaches are lit all along the coast for the burning of ‘Juanillos’, (figurines or puppets).

Urban Rhythm Festival

THE Youth Department of Fuengirola Town Hall is sponsoring local musical talent with the organisation of the first ‘Urban Rhythm Festival’.

It is an event that will put on stage seven young representatives of the urban music scene in Fuengirola and will be held on Saturday June 29, from 8pm, in the Plaza del Puerto Deportivo, admission is free.

“We are very excited about this event. It is an idea that has come from a group of young people from Fuengirola, who have met with me several times to set up this project.

They have a great musical restlessness and want to share their art and their creations in public. We are really delighted,” said councillor, Isaac Vargas. The people of Fuengirola and visitors will be able to enjoy the best urban music from the town’s young people. The genres will be varied and will range from pop to reggaeton.

“We want there to be a healthy and creative atmosphere. We want it to be a great start of the summer for our young people. And what better way to do this than to promote the musical talent of the people of Fuengirola,” concluded Vargas.

Al Fresquito Festival

ONCE again in 2024 the town of San Roque will enjoy a summer with a variety of musical performances. In July the Al Fresquito Festival returns, which will be held on the Saturday July 20 starting at 9.30pm in the Plaza de Las Constituciones where several groups will entertain the people of San Roque with music from the 80s and 90s. Bands including La Guardia, Orquesta Mondragón, La Frontera and Djohn fill the line-up of this one-night festival that brings together well-known artists who will

make the audience hum those songs that never go out of fashion and that are in the imagination of the veteran public.

La Guardia is a rock band formed in Granada, Spain, in the 1980s. They have sold more than one and a half million records and are considered by critics as one of the most important bands in the history of Spanish rock.

Orquesta Mondragón, founded in 1976 in San Sebastián around the eccentric singer Javier Gurruchaga and the mimic Popotxo Ayestarán, is known for its humo-

rous and provocative spirit.

La Frontera is a Spanish rock band founded in 1984, influenced by American outlaw, country rock and roots Americana. Their style kept them as a rarity in a music scene dominated by pop and indie.

If you want to enjoy the best Spanish bands of the 80s and 90s, don’t hesitate and spend a night at the Fresquito Festival in San Roque. Moreover, admission is free, an unmissable occasion to sing and dance on a summer night.

Summer Cinema Festival

MARENOSTRUM Fuengirola will once again be the setting for the Summer Cinema Festival, thanks to the colla boration agreement signed between Fuengirola Council and the Miramar Shopping Centre. Councillor, José Sánchez, and the head of marketing, Sandra Iglesias, explained that, once again, it will be the viewers themselves who will choose the films to be screened by voting for their favourites on

the social networks of the Miramar park. This is an event for the whole family, which for 2024 will take place on July 9 and 10 and August 20 and 21 and people who participate in the film selection process will be entered into a draw for a gift voucher worth €50.

“Fuengirola is a tourist town and during the summer season we have a multitude of leisure and cultural activities to complement the sun and beach. Among these leisure activities is the Summer Cinema Festival, which we have been organising for more than a decade and which has always met with the approval of all the people who have attended,” said Sánchez, explaining that, “as in previous years, this time we are going to hold it in the Marenostrum Fuengirola auditorium, which is a spectacular place and offers the possibility for people who do not go to concerts during the summer, to also enjoy this venue with the films that we show for free.”

The Summer Cinema Festival is also

a charity event, as once again in 2024 the proceeds from the food and drink bars will be donated to two associations with deep roots in the town: the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Patients (AFA).

Sandra Iglesias, representing the Miramar Shopping Park, said that, “at the Miramar Shopping Centre we are delighted to repeat this collaboration that we have been doing for many, many years.

For us it is a particularly important initiative, because it is an event that the town of Fuengirola looks forward to every year and which has become almost a symbol of summer in the town.”

Global Gift Gala

MARBELLA will host the Global Gift Gala for the 12th year on Sunday July 21, with the actress Eva Longoria as the host of honour. Marbella’s mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, spoke at the presentation of the event, which will take place once again at the Gran Hotel Meliá Don Pepe and aims to raise funds for Casa Ángeles, a day centre located in the city that helps children and their families with special needs or who are in a situation of social vulnerability.

Chill & Grill: Playa Marina’s go-to spot for delicious chicken and more

SITUATED in the heart of Playa Marina, Chill & Grill has quickly become a beloved dining destination since its inception nearly two years ago. With its welcoming atmosphere and mouthwatering menu, this chicken restaurant has earned a loyal following among locals.

The inspiration behind Chill & Grill is a story of resilience and community spirit. During the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic, many rotisserie chicken spots closed their doors. Recognising the void this left, Nicky, the passionate owner, decided to open a rotisserie chicken takeaway.

This vision soon expanded into the thriving restaurant we know today, as

Nicky identified a growing demand for quality, freshly prepared meals.

Chill & Grill’s menu has evolved to offer an enticing variety of dishes beyond rotisserie chicken. Guests can enjoy a range of chicken dishes, hamburgers, ribs, and salads, all served with delectable sauces. The emphasis on using quality produce ensures that every meal is a delightful experience.

The restaurant’s ambiance is equally inviting, whether you choose to dine in the air-conditioned indoor area or the charming outdoor terrace. One of the standout offerings is the Pie, Liquor and Mash, along with the popular ½ Roast Chicken served with chips and coleslaw. Currently, there’s a special offer for two people, including drinks, priced at just €25.00

- a perfect deal for a beachside meal. Chill & Grill also caters to those on the go, with convenient takeaway options ideal for a picnic.

As summer approaches and dining preferences shift, the restaurant has adjusted its hours, now welcoming guests daily from 3.00pm to 10.30pm. The dedicated team, including Nicky, Tom, and Nicola, ensures that every visit is met with warm smiles and excellent service.

Sundays at Chill & Grill are particularly special, with the Sunday Roast being a crowd favourite. Due to its popularity, reservations are recommended to avoid missing out. The restaurant also prides itself on its home-made desserts. During a recent

An evening with ‘VAN the MAN’ ADVERTISING FEATURE

SATURDAY night offered an unforgettable date night experience in the stunning surroundings of Starlite Occident Marbella, one of the most beautiful venues in Europe. This ‘date night’ was with Van Morrison, an artist whose music has been a constant in my life for over 40 years. Although our relationship exists only in my imagination, my affection for his music has never diminished. His extraordinary command of various instruments, particularly the saxophone, showcases his profound love for jazz, a love that resonates deeply with his audience.

Van Morrison’s performance flowed effortlessly through his meticulously curated playlist, captivating us, his eager audience. True to his reputation, Van did not interact with the crowd, nor did he introduce his songs or share the stories

behind his heartfelt lyrics. Despite his reserved stage presence, his rendition of love songs, like ‘Making Love in the Afternoon’ from the album ‘Days Like This’, vividly evoked the emotions tied to his past relationships. While Van seems to have moved on from those times, the songs he created during those periods continue to captivate his fans.

At 78, Van’s appearance remains strikingly similar to his look from three decades ago. His expression, unchanged and devoid of visible emotion, does not detract from the power of his music. Instead, the focus shifts to his profound lyrics and the exceptional performance of his band. Each band member’s passion for their instrument is palpable, and their individual talents shine, enriching the concert experience.

Van’s sudden departure from the

stage, without performing some of his most beloved songs, left the audience with a sense of incompleteness. Starting the concert 10 minutes early and leaving abruptly, Van concluded his performance without an encore, leaving us yearning for more. Nevertheless, his stylish appearance in a blue suit by a renowned Irish tailor and a hat by a famous Irish designer was appreciated. Starlite Occident Marbella lived up to its reputation. The venue buzzed with excitement as we awaited the performance. Restaurants served delicious food with remarkable efficiency, and the bars operated with incredible speed, ensuring everyone received their orders promptly.

The venue’s transformation as night fell, with twinkling lights reflecting off the mountains, created a magical atmosphere. Entertainment

extended beyond the concert. A DJ and dancers in stunning costumes engaged with the audience, enhancing the vibrant energy and atmosphere. The venue’s staff ensured smooth operations, from entry to exit, always with cheerful smiles. Starlite earns 10 gold stars for its exceptional management and enchanting environment, while Van Morrison’s performance merits five stars. Despite some disappointment with the artist’s lack of engagement, the venue’s excellence more than compensated. This concert marked Van Morrison’s first performance in Spain. A small suggestion for Van: a bit of interaction with the audience would make us feel as valued as we value your music.

San Rock Festival

THE Plaza de Toros of San Roque will host the San Rock Festival for another year on Sunday July 28 from 9.30pm.

‘Mago de Oz’ heads the bill, which is completed with Shalom, Eleven360, Vástago, Kathew and DJ Heavy. The councillor for Youth, David Ramos, explained about the commitment of San Roque Council to this musical style which has many followers in the municipality and the surrounding region. He encouraged everyone to come and enjoy this date with rock in San Roque.

One of the members of Kathew, Rafa García, was very happy that this rock and metal event will once again be held in San Roque and thanked the councillor for Youth for the town hall’s commitment. He also invited everyone to come to the bullring to enjoy the concerts.

‘Mago de Oz’, are a Spanish folk metal band founded in Madrid in 1988. Established as one

of the most recognised heavy metal bands in Spanish, they became successful in 1998 with the album La leyenda de La Mancha, reaching the Spanish music charts with songs like ‘Molinos de viento’ and later, with their album Finisterra, ‘Fiesta pagana’.

‘Shalom’ is a glam band that was founded in Algeciras in 1987 when Juan Tamayo (guitar) and Tony Jurado (drums) started playing music in a club in La Granja, for which they invited Sebastián M Guerrero (vocals) to join their adventure, and Rubén Tamayo (bass) joined them, being the brother of the former. Vastago, meanwhile, is another San Roque band

that also performed at the first San Rock Festival last year, when the band only had two albums on the market and had been playing for six years. Their spokesperson was also grateful for the fact that an authentic rock party can be revived at this Festival. Kathew is a groove metal band from Algeciras that was created in 2008. It is made up of five musicians with several years of experience. Malevangelio was their first demo and Generación XXI was their first concept album, which came out in 2013, after which they started to participate in the main festivals in Spain.
