An exception has been made in Estepona regarding water restrictions to protect the species living in them.

Fauna protection

The ponds are located in the ‘Palacio de Congresos’ (Conference centre) and the ‘Parque Cavario’ (Calvario Park). They are home to a co -

lony of ducks and many different types of turtles and fish, many of which are in their nesting period.

Estepona Council is also carrying out cleaning and water sanitation to guarantee the animals’ health.

Due to the drought, ponds haven’t been filled this summer in order to save water.

In addition, the council only has a few of the

town’s fountains in operation with a closed water circuit.

Tourism boom

TORREMOLINOS had the best May in the town’s history after a massive national tourism increase.

Last month Torremolinos received 4,093 visitors more than 2023 and the staff employment in hotels increased by 14 per cent.

Margarita del Cid, mayor of Torremolinos, said: “Torremolinos has just had the best month of May in its history in

terms of tourism, with a growth of seven points compared to May 2023 and we are approaching 600,000 overnight stays.

“These figures support a tourism strategy that has been followed in recent years, and also represents unprecedented progress in quality and job creation.”

Foreign travellers totalled 84,950; more than 23,000 were British tourists, followed by French and the Netherlands.

The awards are organised by CEJE, the Japanese-Spanish Business Circle and took place on June 17 at Edifici Llotja in Barcelona.

Sergio Solís works at the Ta-Kumi Japanese restaurant in Marbella and the challenge was to show his prowess in several tests with a piece of tuna loin and ventresca tuna belly. He did so with a trio of sashimi, a trilogy of nigiris and three makis.

“Almost without thinking about it, I took the plunge and in the end it turned out well,” he said. As well as the coveted title, Solís won €3,000 in cash, a trip for two to Japan and a set of Japanese knives.

REPRESENTING the epitome of luxury, Sotogrande is a small municipality of San Roque in the province of Cadiz. It is located 25km from Gibraltar and it stretches from the Mediterranean coast to the foothills of Sierra Almenara. It boasts stunning views of the sea, mountains, the rock of Gibraltar and Morocco.

Inspired by a prestigious resort in the Philippines and California, Sotogrande is famous for its wealthy residents and prosperous lifestyle. It has a magni cent port and distinguishable colourful houses in the coastal area.

It is the perfect place to relax in one of the many fancy beach bars (chiringuitos) while sipping cocktails to experience a taster of their lavish way of living.

Sotogrande was founded in the early 1960s by the millionaire businessman, Joseph McMicking after he visited and fell in love with the area. It was originally a gated community however it is now the largest privately owned residential development in Andalucia.

Football legend, Lionel Messi owns the MIM Hotel as well as a residence there, and Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal also owns a property.

SOTOGRANDE, as mentioned before was designed in the 1960s after catching the attention of a millionaire businessman who decided to convert it into a California-inspired resort on the Mediterranean. With its huge celebrity-style mansions near the mountains, beaches, and views of kilometres of green golf courses, the California spirit really shines through in Sotogrande.

The oldest club is the Real Club de Sotogrande which was designed in 1964, not long after Sotogrande was created, and is one of the best golf courses in Europe.

The annual European Nations Cup (Copa Sotogrande) is held here for leading amateur golfers. Rory Mcllroy and Shane Lowry are some of the golfers who won the European Nations Cup and went on to excel in their careers.

Popular beach bars are even styled like a typical Californian bar. During the evenings at ‘La Reserva Beach Club’ large fire pit burners are lit, similar to those on the famous Pebble Beach in California. The walkway will have a length of 15 linear metres and a width of 2.2 metres.

Francisco Jose Martin, councillor of the Fuengirola Town Council said: “One of the great projects of the Provincial Council is to make it possible for us to explore Malaga coast on foot, what we know as the Senda Litoral.

“There was this small stretch left to connect with Benalmadena. This is going to be a reality, very soon.”

A ramp will be constructed at the nal roundabout of the Paseo Marítimo Rey de España (promenade) to reach the level of the walkway.

The project will cost €103,417.27, about €10,000 less than planned, and will be nanced by the Malaga Provincial Council.

It is estimated to take 85 days and should be open by the end of the summer.

Accessible tourism

FUENGIROLA Town Hall has launched a Tourist Accessibility Guide, prepared by Ilunion Accessibility, which includes a list of the hotels in the municipality that have the best conditions for welcoming people with reduced mobility.

The event took place within the framework of the training sessions on inclusive and accessible tourism held at the Ilunion hotel in the town.

During the event, the mayor, Ana Mula, presented each of the hotels with

a badge for their commitment to the accessibility of the destination and their attention to the public with accessibility requirements.

“We embarked on an ambitious project, that of drawing up a Strategic Plan for Accessible Tourism to make a diagnosis of the town and implement the necessary actions to make us a fully inclusive destination,” explained Mula, adding that, “the conclusions of this study have led to the Tourist Accessibility Guide

with which, thanks to the work of Ilunion and the collaboration of our hotel sector, we will offer the best possible information to visitors on this increasingly important issue when it comes to travelling.”

The aim of this document is to improve accessibility in Fuengirola’s accommodation and tourist resources, and to offer tools to those responsible for the establishments for their management, which is becoming increasingly important for travellers.

Beware traffic jams

IF you are a resident almost anywhere on the Costa del Sol, you will know that the summer promises traffic jams on the roads.

of the journey may be fast and easy, expect not only far higher levels of traffic when you hit those patches but in many cases the speed limit drops from 120kph to 80 kph.

cident anywhere on the road, in either direction, the queues really start to build up until the vehicle or vehicles can be moved.

If you are a visitor it might come as something of a surprise that it’s not much fun being stuck in a long traffic jam which could be several kilometres long especially if it’s hot and your air conditioning isn’t working too well.

The two major causes are the influx of much welcome visitors who bring prosperity to the coast and the amount of building of new property without any apparent thought for the volume of new traffic created.

To get from Malaga Airport to Fuengirola, Marbella and beyond, drivers can choose to take the AP7 toll road which isn’t too busy, but the toll escalates in the summer to generate as much money as possible for the company running it.

What many don’t realise however is that the AP7 isn’t an exclusive motorway but at different times joins with the A7, the free to use motorway so whilst part

For decades there were long queues if you were heading from Estepona towards Puerto Banus and Marbella with a choke at the town of San Pedro Alcantarait even got worse when it was decided to build a tunnel to bypass San Pedro and then relief came when it was opened.

That was great for a few years, but now all that has happened is that the queue actually starts in the tunnel and goes on for several kilometres until you get to the Puerto Banus turn off and it appears that the powers that be have now installed speed cameras at the entrance of the tunnel, although they will be redundant for most of the time!

The A7 is a free two lane motorway which runs from Cadiz Province all the way to Torremolinos and even though speed is limited to 80kph, much of the journey sees traffic flow relatively well, but as soon as there is an ac -

In some weeks in summer, there is an added hazard as the annual pilgrimage is undertaken by drivers and their families in often old and overloaded vehicles heading to or from the ports of Algeciras or Tarifa to catch ferries to Morocco. Although the Spanish can be somewhat quixotic in their driving habits, many seeming to believe that it costs money to use the indicator or that the gap between cars is not for safety but somewhere for them to squeeze into, they are generally quite safe, although their habits may take a bit of getting used to.

All in all you can get from A to B eventually but you have to be prepared to be patient and try to avoid rush hours from about 8am to 9.30am and 6pm to 8pm.

Just be grateful that the schools have broken up as the hazard of parents parking anywhere in order to drop off or pick up their loved ones disappears for a couple of months.

Queens of the Castle

Kirk Blows

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE proved they’re still one of the most vital rock bands of our times with a career-spanning set at the Marenostrum Fuengirola on Sunday June 23.

The project, very much frontman Josh Homme’s singular vision, emerged from Seattle in the post-grunge-rock days of the late 1990s and have developed a loyal fanbase.

They’ve suffered some turbulent times in the past but the mood seems bright as they support the In Times New Roman album.

They draw on a range of material as they continue to impress with their power while also diverting into more electronic zones.

As with all the best rock, there’s a vague

sense of danger but here it’s set within a convivial atmosphere, with a happy Homme paying homage to the excitable fans.

“You’re the best crowd ever,” he declares, before pointing to the Sohail Castle. “This is our favourite country on earth.”

Whether that’s showmanship or sincerity nobody seems to care. The rest of what is now a stable line-up work hard but Homme is very much the main man. The band even go funky with Make It Wit Chu while Long Slow Goodbye is as balladic as they get.

Yet it’s still the heavy riffs and crunching power chords that hit home hardest, with Go With The Flow, No One Knows and A Song For The Dead packing a mighty punch.

Procession recognition

THE annual ‘Virgen del Carmen’ procession in Fuengirola has been declared a festivity of provincial Tourist singularity.

The Provincial Council of Malaga declared this news on Tuesday June 25.

It is the most popular religious tradition and one of the most celebrated days in the town.

Every July 16, on the day of the Virgen del Carmen, thousands of people gather to follow and witness the journey of the Patroness of sailors. She is carried on her throne by her

men and women through the streets and entered into the sea to bless the water.

The Provincial Trust Singularity seal is given to celebrations that are extraordinary, different and with deep cultural meaning, to conserve traditions and of course, attract tourists.

These traditions impact the Costa del Sol positively in terms of development and tourist promotion as well as allow visitors to gain an insight into the culture, gastronomy, folklore, and uniqueness there is in Spain.

Ambulance increase

THERE has been an increase in ambulances in Ronda.

On Tuesday June 25, the Junta de Andalucia announced that there would be an improvement in medical transport in Ronda.

From now on Ronda and its surroundings will have five ambulances instead of two.

Patricia Navarro, the delegate of the Govern-

ment of Andalucia has expressed her satisfaction regarding the upgrade as she had previously described the services as “absolutely obsolete, not only in number but also in the quality of its equipment.”

There will also be two medical emergency teams that will cover Ronda, Arriate, and Montecorto.

The public health budget in Serrania has expe-

rienced a significant rise in the last five years, hence the improvement.

The increase in ambulances isn’t the only change Ronda has experienced, with many additions to the Ronda Sur-Santa Bárbara Health Centre, including an x-ray room, and now residents can attend chemotherapy in Ronda rather than have to travel to Malaga.

Marbella impose €750 fine

Talyta Franca, Class 2026, Northwestern University in Qatar

AS an initiative to preserve the beaches of Costa del Sol, the Malaga municipality has introduced a €750 fine for those caught urinating in the sea or on the beach area.

This new regulation, sanctioned by the municipal council, aims to ensure a cleaner and more enjoyable experience for all beach users.

The initiative, part of a broader effort to prepare for the summer influx of tourists, was approved by the council on Friday, June 21. It builds upon a previous regulation from 2004, which imposed fines of up to €300 for

similar violations.

This strict measure will be enforced across 25 beaches in the Malaga municipality, according to the AS report. The council’s position reflects a commitment to maintaining the high standards that make Costa del Sol a top destination for tourism.

In addition to the fine for urination, Marbella has also implemented other regulations to maintain beach safety. Activities such as playing ball in the water, which could disturb other bathers, are also prohibited.

Organising public events or competitions on the beaches will also require prior authorisation from local authorities.

The substance is still available for existing users but in smaller doses, as the medication agency cites “problems with production and distribution at the manufacturer.”

patients will now have to receive a dose of 300 milligrams once every three weeks, instead of a 405 milligrams every four weeks, as stated in the temporary treatment advice from the National Medicines Coordination Centre. The centre had previously spoken of a “structural availability problem” of the drug.

With these shortages in consideration, new patients will have to omit using Zypadhera altogether, despite its effectiveness and opt for alternative medical treatment.

Coming a cropper in Matera

PARKOUR enthusiasts

Team Phat damaged a building in Matera, a city in southern Italy continuously occupied since the 10th century BC.

Parkour, for the uninitiated, entails negotiating obstacles in a manmade or natural environment, usually by running, jumping, vaulting or climbing. Few local or municipal authorities encourage it, owing to the physical risks involved and potential damage to public and private property.

That is what happened in Matera in April, as shown in a video detailing the London group’s Matera mishap that was recently seen by a wider public thanks to a report by the US news channel, CNN Travel.

Devon McIntosh, one of the free-runners, mis-timed a landing as he jumped between buildings and crashed down, taking some masonry with him. After inspecting his injuries, he

and the group were relieved to find he was comparatively unharmed, but were less concerned about damage to the building.

An unseen Team Phat member suggests “hiding the evidence” and the party move off, leaving later that day for Naples.

According to the June 19 CNN Travel report, the news channel contacted Matera police for a comment and was waiting for a reply.

Team Phat will definitely not be visiting Venice where they have been banned since March 2023, after one of them jumped

into a canal.

City mayor Luigi Brugnaro later commented on X that had earned a certificate for stupidity. “We are trying to identify him to denounce him and his companion who made the stupid video for social media,” he said.

Matera has a population of 60,403 and most of its districts and habitable caves carved from the area’s soft limestone have been restored since the 1950s onwards. It has been a UNESCO Heritage Site since 1993 and is said to be the world’s third-oldest city after Aleppo and Jericho.

Lucky clover

ACCORDING to superstition, a five-leaf clover is considered luckier than a four-leaf clover.

By that standard, Yoshiharu Watanabe, who cultivated a record-breaking 63-leaf clover, might be the luckiest person alive.

Yoshiharu, a 45-yearold resident of Nasus hiobara, Japan, has been cross-pollinating clovers (Trifolium repens L.) in his garden since 2012. “Since the number of lea ves has increased year by year, I have been aiming for the Guinness World Records title ever since,” he stated.

The previous record was set in 2009 by Shigeo Obara from Hanamaki City, Japan, with a 56-leaf clover.

Yoshiharu maintains several clover patches in his garden and explained, “Clover is a common plant found everywhere, so whenever I saw a four-leaved, five-leaved, or se-

ven-leaved clover near paddy fields or parks, I took it back home.

The plant is pretty strong and you don’t have to do anything to it, so I just left them, then they just prospered.”

After discovering a 20leaf clover in his garden,

Yoshiharu began considering breaking the world record.

“I had to triple the number of leaves to try and beat it,” he recalled. “It didn’t seem that easy, yet the leaves kept growing in numbers; I thought I might eventually be able to break it.”

Yoshiharu is thrilled to have earned the world record, expressing his joy: “People say that a four-leaved clover brings you happiness, so it would be great if this 63-leaved clover would bring surprise and pleasure to people.”

Ambassador Reception

MR HUGH ELLIOTT, the British Ambassador for the past five years, and his wife are preparing to depart for London to assume a new role in the Foreign Office. During his tenure, Mr Elliott has significantly contributed to diplomatic relations between the two countries.

A reception was held at the Ambassador’s residence in Madrid to mark the occasion and, in particular, to thank the British Community Organisations for their collaboration and support over the last five years. The gathering in the sunlit gardens, created a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Guests enjoyed a glass of something cool and refreshing, together with some delicious canapes.

It was a truly intimate affair, with around 50 invited guests, including representatives from

politics, the British Consulates, and the many charities that support the English-speaking community in Spain. Charities that included Samaritans in Spain, who were privileged to share a conversation with the Ambassador in which he divulged that he had gifted King Felipe with some jars of marmalade that he had made to mark the 10th anniversary of his reign. A gift he said “that symbolised the British-Spanish relationship that he had enjoyed over the years.”

During his heartfelt speech, the Ambassador expressed his deep appreciation for all those present, sharing he had gained a profound understanding of the diverse range of organisations established to support UK residents over the past five years. He also took a moment

Is it good or bad for us? VOX Pop

AS Arti cial Intelligence (AI) is set to become a more integral part of people’s everyday lives, we asked our readers if they thought AI was good or bad for society.

Georgina Doran from Ireland, now living in Albir had this to say, “Technology is exciting and we must embrace change or we will be left behind. However, it is crucial to ensure that AI is developed and used in an ethical and responsible manner. She continued “it is like anything, everything is ok in moderation. Society creates original ideas with feelings and this is something that AI can’t achieve.”

Ingrid Moya Martinez, who moved to Benidorm from Cuba has mixed feelings about AI, “I believe AI has positive aspects for society as well as negative ones. For example, as a positive, I believe that with AI you can obtain faster and more efficient results, you can automate many processes and thus maintain more optimal and detailed control. She went on to say, “In short, it would develop technology in an extraordinary way, which leads to a fairly important disadvantage and that is that jobs would decrease considerably.”

David Van Dyke , originally from Rotterdam and now living in Albox said, “to be honest I don’t quite understand what impact it is likely to have on my life. Maybe some of the stories I read will have been created by AI, but hopefully it’s not going to be like the film The Matrix where Artificial Intelligent robots conquer the world.”

Rosalinda Garcia , who came to Spain from England at a very young age, was scathing in her views on AI, “It has been present for much longer than we know and they have told us. Little by little they are making it known to the world’s population and we no longer know what is real and what is a lie and this is dangerous to society.”

David Collada , a Cuban who has lived in Spain for more than 20 years and is a regular user of AI, feels it is good for society: “I am precisely quite immersed in this AI; I think of this technology as a revolution more like the industrial revolution or the internet revolution. It will streamline many processes, and like any revolution, at first, it will destroy many jobs, but in the long run, it will create many more.”

Counterfeit goods Immigration deadline

AIMEE GROSSMAN, a British resident, is heartbroken after her Spanish husband, Gines Rodriguez, was deported back to Spain.

The couple, married for 15 years, have been left reeling after a mix-up with immigration procedures tore their family apart.

Rodriguez’s ordeal began upon returning to the UK from visiting his elderly mother in Spain. He was detained at Leeds

Bradford Airport for lacking the proper documentation to reside in the UK. It came to light that Rodriguez had missed the deadline to apply under the European Union Settlement Scheme, a programme established after Brexit.

The couple claims Rodriguez had been living with Aimee and their daughter on and o for several years, establishing their life in the UK.

However, their attempt to rectify the situation by applying after the deadline was denied due to insu cient evidence explaining the delay. The hefty legal fees associated with appealing the decision based on human rights grounds were insurmountable for the family.

With no other option, Rodriguez was deported to Malaga, leaving his wife and daughter behind in the UK.

THE Guardia Civil has seized 58,000 counterfeit items valued at €22 million in the Canary Islands.

This significant operation targeted crimes against industrial property across 80 businesses in the Canary Islands, specifically in Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro.

The operation, initiated in January, involved extensive surveillance of various commercial establishments across these islands.

Guardia Civil officers identified an extensive sale of counterfeit products and launched a coordinated inspection to prevent merchants from being alerted about the imminent raids.

In the initial operation, officers discovered 24,500 counterfeit items, inspected businesses, and identified

39 individuals. In a subsequent operation targeting high-end brands, officers seized over 33,500 counterfeit items valued at nearly €16 million in today’s market.

They also investigated 45 individuals and inspected a total of 39 premises, predominantly bazaars, along with four cargo vans used for selling counterfeit goods including clothing, bags, wallets, belts, footwear, sunglasses, perfumes, toys, and other children’s items.

A judicial expert in trademarks assisted during the inspections, confirming the authenticity or otherwise of the counterfeit products. This operation marks the second major crackdown on industrial property violations by the Guardia Civil in less than a year, reflecting their ongoing commitment to combating this illegal market.

Double role for runway

BELGIUM’S second-largest solar park covering an area of 303,864 square metres will be located at Ostend-Bruges airport. By spring 2026, when all the panels have been installed and connected, the photovoltaic power station will produce more than an annual 37,000 megawatts of electricity, energy company EnergyVision announced.

Initially this will supply electricity for the entire airport site, explained Eric Dumas, chief executive of Ostend-Bruges airport, with the remainder going to approximately 10,000 homes in the immediate area.

“It is absolutely important to also let our neighbours benefit from power from our own region,” Dumas said, as Ostend

mayor Bart Tommelein symbolically activated the first panel. If all goes according to schedule, the first families could be using green electricity as early as September.

“By autumn, enough solar panels will already be operational at the airport to generate 10 megawatts of power,” Dumas added.

Leeds Bradford Airport was the scene of a family crisis.

€3 homes

IN 2019, the village of Sambuca di Sicilia in southern Italy gained international attention by selling homes for as little as €1.

These kinds of schemes have become a popular method for revitalising rural towns with declining populations, aiming to attract new residents and prevent empty homes from falling into disrepair.

While similar initiatives failed in other areas, Sambuca’s e orts were met with an overwhelming response.

Buyers from the United States, the Middle East, and beyond ocked to purchase these homes, injecting approximately €20 million into the local economy.

Now, Sambuca is o ering more houses for sale.

However, potential buyers should note

that there are some conditions and the starting price has increased.

This round, 10 homes are available with a starting bid of €3.

Located in the town’s historic Saracen district, these structures are reported to be as sound as those previously sold.

Abandoned after a 1969 earthquake, these houses belong to the local authorities, streamlining the sales process compared to areas where councils must mediate between private owners and buyers.

The available properties are two to three-bedroom houses, no larger than 80 square metres, constructed from honey-coloured stone.

Featuring two or three oors, some of the buildings also have terraces.

IN a recent archaeological nd near Sevilla, researchers have uncovered what appears to be the oldest preserved wine in liquid form, dating back approximately 2,000 years.

The discovery took place in 2019 at a Roman necropolis in Carmona, associated with the ancient town of Carmo in Hispania Baetica.

The necropolis, remarkably intact, revealed a family mausoleum where urns containing cremated remains were placed in niches along the chamber walls.

One urn in niche 8 stood out: made of lead and sealed with a glass jar (‘olla ossuaria’), it contained cremated bones, a gold ring depicting the god Janus, and an astonishing ve litres of well-preserved reddish liquid.

Published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, researchers

noted that the liquid, identi ed as wine through plasma mass spectrometry analysis, remained preserved within the urn.

This nding contrasts sharply with nearby niches under similar environmental conditions, which were dry.

The presence of liquid wine in the urn suggests its ceremonial use in Roman burial rituals, aiding the deceased in

their journey. This discovery surpasses previous nds of ancient wine, such as in Speyer, Germany, where it was contained in a glass jar from the fourth century AD. Unlike those ndings, the Carmona discovery marks the rst instance where ancient wine has been chemically identi ed in its liquid state rather than through absorbed residues.

INTERVIEW

Speaking European –Tova Lind

AT just 19 years old, Tova Lind has already embarked on a remarkable adventure, leaving behind her homeland of Sweden to follow her passion for horses in Spain.

Talyta Franca, Class 2026, Northwestern University in Qatar

Fresh out of Mälardalens Ridgymnasium, with a major in agriculture and horse knowledge, Tova’s love for equestrian activities, especially show jumping, has always been a driving force in her life.

Tova’s journey to Spain began when a school friend mentioned a job opportunity that seemed made for her. “She thought it would be perfect for me, and I didn’t want to spend the winter in Sweden,” Tova says.

Relocating to a new country can be an intimidating challenge for many young Europeans. For Tova, however, it was an exciting one. “At rst, it was hard just ha-

ving the guts to get out and do stu ,” she admits.

The language barrier remains a signi cant hurdle for Tova, as English is not widely spoken in her eld. “In my line of work, there aren’t a lot of people who know any English, so communication has been di cult from time to time,” she says. Making friends has been a mixed experience but although she doesn’t have family in Spain, her boss and her housemates have become like an extended family.

Looking ahead, Tova hopes to remain in Spain for the long term, but wishes to visit Sweden more frequently. “I’ve been back twice since I moved,” she says.

Primark in Portugal

PRIMARK, the budget clothing retailer, announced a massive €40 million investment to expand in Portugal. This news coincides with Primark celebrating its 15th anniversary in the country.

“We’re thrilled to share our investment plan and enter four new cities,” said Nelson Ribeiro, Head of Sales at Primark Portugal, during a recent press presentation. The expansion plan includes four brand new stores in Guimaraes, Viseu, Covilha, and Montijo. Additionally, Primark is completing the expansion of its popular Colombo store in Lisbon, o ering shoppers an even larger space lled with clothing, homeware essentials, and beauty products at a ordable prices.

The new stores, ranging from 1,630 to 2,460 square metres, will be strategically located in popular shopping centres and retail parks. The Montijo store, opening later this year at Alegro Montijo, is already accepting applications, with recruitment for other stores expected to begin in the coming months.

This expansion is expected to create over 500 new jobs, adding to Primark’s existing workforce of more than 1,700 employees across Portugal. Primark is known for its diverse workforce, employing people from over 11 nationalities. With 10 existing stores and four new ones on the horizon, Primark is poised to become even more prominent.

Firework fools

THIRTEEN people who let off fireworks from their yacht began a forest fire on Hydra, an island near Athens.

The boat’s occupants, who are all Greek citizens, reportedly tried to stem the blaze which began late on the night of June 21 but fled once it was obvious that the fire was out of control.

Giorgos Koukoudakis, Hydra mayor, said he was “outraged”, and would take legal action against the “irresponsible” people who had devastated Hydra’s only pine forest.

In an interview with Greece’s public broadcaster, ERT, Koukoudakis also called on the authorities to designate fire-free zones and to create more firebreaks and roads through forests.

Hydra’s fire brigade explained on social media that the pine forest’s inaccessibility had pre-

vented them from reaching the area by land. Instead, they had to get the flames under control from the beach, while helicopters helped to douse the fire from the air.

Following a mild winter and temperatures that reached 44 degrees in some areas in mid-June, fire is an ever-present risk.

Officials said 64 forest and brush fires broke out in Greece in the 24 hours between late on June 21 and June 22. High temperatures and strong winds

complicated the task of controlling them, with a volunteer firefighter losing his life in Ilia on the Peloponnese peninsula on June 21.

In a bid to eradicate negligence, human error and arson, the government has introduced fines of up to €200,000 and prison terms of up to 20 years.

Arson is an ever-present problem, and at least 79 people were arrested in Greece in August 2023, charged with provoking destructive fires.

Couple in wrong country From China to Spain

FOLLOWING Spain’s announcement to eradicate the golden visa scheme, non-EU nationals began rushing to purchase Spanish property; many of the buyers are from China.

The golden visa is the only way for foreign, non-European nationals to obtain all the benefits of Spanish residency, without having to pay tax or permanently reside in Spain.

In China, a rise in investments in Spain has been seen ever since the government’s announcement.

Long Fang, CEO of Bafre Inmobilaria, revealed to Spanish Press; “We’ve noticed growing demand,” and highlighted that Chinese buyers especially desire to obtain the golden visa, “that facilitates entry and exit when travelling for business or tourism with the family.”

The majority of Chinese buyers chose to purchase several cheaper apartments and rent them out, while others purchase industrial properties to set up

businesses. There are however, some who invest into luxury properties such as the Chinese buyer who recently bought a €975,000 chalet in Madrid.

The Foreign Ministry recently reported in the golden visas by Transparency International, that China, after Russia, had the most nationals striving for the visa.

A total of 2,712 visas were issued to Chinese nationals since 2019; of these, 99,33 per cent were through property purchases.

ANDREW GORE and his wife Victoria were in for a shock on their way to a family holiday in Spain to celebrate Andrew’s 47th birthday. The couple, from Mountain Ash, Rhondda Cynon Taf, ended up 1,500 miles away from their intended destination after being mistakenly placed on the wrong flight.

Their trip to the sunny Costa Brava was disrupted when they boarded a Ryanair flight at Bristol Airport believing they were flying to Barcelona. However, upon landing, they discovered they were in Kaunas, Lithuania, a city in Eastern Europe.

The mistake stemmed from a mis communication during the boar ding process. Andrew and Victoria, who rely on special assistance due to Andrew’s amputation and Victoria’s autism, were ushered onto the wrong plane. Despite checks by ground staff and cabin crew, the error went unnoticed until the plane touched down.

“We were told our family was definitely on the flight,” recounted Andrew Gore. “We relaxed, thinking everything was fine.” He continued, “When I woke up and saw it wasn’t Spain outside, I knew something was wrong.”

a nightmare. While Ryanair eventually rebooked them to Barcelona, it involved an overnight stay in Riga, Latvia, a 150-mile Uber ride, and a two-day wait for their luggage.

“It was surreal,” said Andrew. “Our family was worried sick, and we were exhausted. Even though they got us there eventually, the stress of the situation lingers.” Both Ryanair and Bristol Airport have launched investigations into the incident.

Election holdup

THE Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which was scheduled to publish the findings of its review into the “debanking” of politicallyexposed persons (PEPs) by the end of June, will not do so until July. “We do not think it is appropriate to publish the review during the pre-election period,” the City watchdog said.

THE International Monetary Fund (FMI) warned Spain that the windfall tax on banks, and energy companies introduced during the cost-of-living crisis, should be “limited and temporary” or, if permanent “designed to minimise possible distortions.” The tax could also “discourage investment”, which was already weak, the FMI said.

THE London Stock Exchange (LSE) has regained its traditional ranking as the largest and most valuable in Europe.

In 2016, for instance, the LSE was worth $1.4 trillion (€1.3 trillion) more than Euronext Paris but was overtaken in 2022. That was partly due to the chaos caused by short-lived PM Liz Truss’s mini-Budget, allied to a weak pound, the spectre of recession and Brexit.

Now the LSE is back on top with listed companies worth $3.18 trillion (approximately €2.95 trillion) compared with the French market’s $3.13 tri-

According to valuations based on Bloomberg data, London and Paris are still neck-andneck, but City experts called the latest figures “a milestone.”

CHINA responded to EU tariffs on its electric vehicles (EVs) with an investigation into pork imports.

The country’s Commerce ministry announced on June 17 that it was launching an anti-dumping enquiry into imports of European pork and pork byproducts following complaints from its own producers.

Spain, which exports an annual €1.4 billion of pork to China, stands to lose most in a future crackdown, followed by the Netherlands which exports €560 million each year, Denmark (€513 million) and France (€260 million).

Galicia’s Upper Court of Justice reversed an earlier decision after Ortega sacked Leyte in November 2020, alleging “loss of confidence.” Leyte, who claimed a severance package of €1.6 million, was an executive and not a salaried employee, the court ruled, and the dismissal was in line with his contract.

Leyte’s November 2022 appeal was accepted, the earlier ruling was cancelled and a new hearing scheduled for May 2024, although its finding have only just been made public.

Money Heist or La Casa de Papel became a global smash hit after Netflix scooped it up in late 2017. Remember those audacious Salvador Dalí-masked robbers in red overalls, waltzing into the Royal Mint and the Bank of Spain? That was Money Heist!

The show’s creator, Álex Pina, is now revisiting its most flamboyant character, Berlin.

Ignoring the awkward fact Berlin met his end in a hail of bullets in season two, he’s bringing him back in a prequel, titled simply ‘Berlin’.

Pina admits the new series partly aims to rectify past mistakes: ‘If we’d known we’d land on Netflix, we wouldn’t have offed him!’ Berlin in the prequel remains as suave, snobbish and scheming as ever, planning a Paris heist worth €44m, all the while grumbling about wife number three.

Pina puts Money Heist’s success down to its Spanish flair and emotional depth, a breath of

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION

VIEWS OF A GRUMPY OLD MAN

I

NEEDED to make an appointment to see a neurologist. I have private healthcare and I am also covered by national health. So I ‘phone the Xanit - and they deserved to be named. I pressed all the right buttons - 1 for English - and hear all the automatic responses. A person answers and asks, in Spanish, what I want and I ask for an English-speaking agent. I’m told to hold, which I do, and after five minutes or so get cut off. I then tried online - didn’t work. I tried their phone App - didn’t work. All together I invested six hours of absolutely wasted time and effort.

I decided that I would not be beaten. I’d drive to the hospital, see a manager and make an official complaint, and then also try and get an appointment. I get there at 16.05, go in and ask to see a manager, and was told, by a very nice bloke, that all the managers leave at four. How can a 24-hour hospital not have a manager there at all times? It’s nuts.

I told him and he agreed. I then told him I couldn’t get the App to work and he said. ‘Yes there are always problems with it.’ Then why doesn’t someone get it fixed? He reminds me that he’s not a manager but he would see if he could get me an appointment. I explained that I also couldn’t get through on the ‘phone. ‘Oh yes’, he said, ‘the problem there is that it’s not done locally anymore. It’s done through a central office in Madrid and even though it gives you all the English options to select, there are very few English-speaking agents to help.’ He then suggested that I put in an official complaint and promptly gave me a form, which he had very close to hand. All this automated stuff is great if it works. The problem is that it doesn’t or at least it doesn’t work all the time and that’s when the frustration starts. They spend millions setting all this stuff up and then let it loose on the public. I have been told by people I know who are in this business that they know it’s not working properly and try and fix it as the problems are pointed out by us the guinea pigs. My advice is don’t let it out until it works properly.

CHOOSING the right oil for cooking is crucial for both flavour and health benefits. Among the healthiest options, olive oil stands out, particularly extra virgin olive oil, which is rich in monounsaturated fats and antioxidants. These properties can help reduce inflammation and lower the risk of heart disease.

Coconut oil is another popular choice, known for its high content of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that can boost metabolism and provide quick energy. Its saturated fat content makes it stable at high temperatures, ideal for frying.

Avocado oil is lauded for its high smoke point and beneficial fats. It is packed with oleic acid, a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, and vitamin E, which supports skin health.

Canola oil is often re commended for its low

saturated fat content and a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, contributing to heart health.

Lastly, sunflower oil is rich in vitamin E and polyunsaturated fats, which can help reduce cholesterol levels and support cardiovascular health.

Each of these oils brings unique health benefits and culinary advantages, making them excellent choices for a variety of cooking methods.

Beauty roller rave A Stylish Summer

SKIN rollers have become an essential addition to many skincare routines, offering a variety of benefits and types to address different skin needs. These handheld tools, featuring roller heads with tiny needles or smooth surfaces, enhance skin health and appearance.

One popular type is the derma roller, equipped with micro-needles that create tiny punctures in the skin. This stimulates collagen production, reducing fine lines, scars, and hyperpigmentation. Derma rollers come in various needle lengths for different skin concerns. Shorter needles are ideal for delicate facial areas, while longer needles suit thicker skin on the body.

Another type is the jade roller, known for its smooth, cool surface. Typically made from jade or other gemstones, this roller reduces puffiness, improves blood circulation, and enhances lymphatic drainage. Jade rollers also help with better absorption of skincare products when used after applying serums or moisturisers. Lastly, the ice roller features a gel-filled roller head that can be chilled in the freezer. This type soothes irritated skin, reduces redness, and provides a refreshing, tightening effect.

Incorporating skin rollers into your routine can improve skin texture making them a valuable tool in modern skincare.

Modern Innovative Architectural Design

IN recent years, contemporary architecture has embraced an era of unprecedented innovation, redefining the boundaries of design and functionality. These modern marvels are characterised by their sleek lines, sustainable practices, and integration of advanced technology, creating properties that are not only visually stunning but also highly functional and environmentally conscious.

One hallmark of contemporary architectural design is the use of minimalism. This approach emphasises simplicity and clarity, often featuring open floor plans, large windows, and seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. The result is a harmonious blend of nature and structure, providing a sense of openness and connection to the environment. For instance, homes with expansive glass walls allow natural light to flood the interiors, reducing the need for artificial lighting and creating an airy, inviting atmosphere.

Sustainability is another crucial aspect of modern architectural designs. Architects are increasingly incorporating eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems into their projects. Green roofs, solar panels, and geothermal heating are becoming standard features in contemporary homes, reducing their carbon footprint and promoting a more sustainable lifestyle.

These innovations not only benefit the environment but also enhance the overall quality of life for residents by lowering energy costs and fostering healthier living spaces. The integration of smart technology is a defining feature of today’s architectural innovations.

Smart homes equipped with advanced automation systems allow homeowners to control lighting, heating, security, and entertainment systems remotely via smartphones or voice commands. This seamless integration of technology enhances convenience, security, and energy efficiency, making daily life more comfortable and efficient.

These innovative properties set a new standard for living, emphasising the importance of environmental responsibility, smart technology, and the seamless integration of nature and structure.

Wall Colour Trends:

A Fresh Palette for Modern Living

IN 2024, homeowners are embracing a vibrant yet harmonious palette for their interiors, reflecting a desire for tranquility, creativity, and connection. This year’s trends in wall colours bring a mix of bold statements and soothing hues, catering to diverse tastes and lifestyles.

Earthy Tones and Nature-Inspired Shades Earthy tones continue to dominate, with shades like terracotta, warm beige, and deep olive green bringing the outdoors in. These colours provide a grounding

effect, creating a serene and comforting environment. Nature-inspired hues, such as soft sage and muted moss, add a touch of tranquility and are perfect for living rooms and bedrooms.

Bold and Vibrant Colours

Warm Neutrals

Warm neutrals such as creamy whites, soft taupes, and gentle greys offer timeless appeal. These colours provide a versatile backdrop that complements various styles, from minimalist to rustic. They’re perfect for creating a cohesive look throughout the home.

For those looking to make a statement, bold colours like rich navy, deep emerald, and vibrant mustard are in vogue. These colours add depth and character to any space, making them ideal for feature walls or accent areas. They can be paired with neutral furnishings to balance the intensity and create a sophisticated look.

Soft Pastels

Soft pastels are also making a comeback, with colours like blush pink, light lavender, and baby blue adding a touch of elegance and calm. These hues are perfect for creating airy and open spaces, making them ideal for smaller rooms or areas lacking natural light.

Metallic Accents

Adding metallic accents in shades of gold, silver, and bronze can elevate wall colours, giving rooms a touch of luxury and sophistication. These accents can be used sparingly to highlight architectural features or create a focal point.

The 2024 wall colour trends offer something for everyone, from the bold and adventurous to the calm and understated. By incorporating these colours, homeowners can refresh their spaces and create environments that reflect their personal style and the latest in interior design.

Grand Vividus: luxury, beauty and comfort in a dream bed

THIS unique bed, the result of the collaboration of Hästens and the interior designer Ferris Rafauli, is built by hand in an artisanal manner and costs just over €500,000. Sleep is a fundamental element for health. Sleep gives the body and brain time to recover from the stress of the day, helps people feel more alert, optimistic, and have a better relationship with others. It also contributes to strengthening the immune system and is an ally in fighting diseases.

That’s why waking up feeling prepared for all the things life has to offer is priceless, is it? If it is Grand Vividus, the Hästens bed considered the most luxurious, beautiful and comfortable, around €500,000. A figure in keeping with its status as a marvel of science behind which there are more than 10 years of research and an authentic work of art. The result of collaboration with interior designer Ferris Rafauli, each bed is entirely handbuilt by Hästens’ most respected artisans in the factory in Köping, Sweden, using traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation to give it a soul and character of its own. Each Grand Vividus contains Hästens’ most luxurious horsehair, wool, cotton, linen, and slowgrowing Swedish pine, giving it an impressive mass of 530 kilograms. Unlike most beds currently

on the market, the Grand Vividus, with its fine leather, polished wood, suede and brass trim, along with its elegant architectural lines, functions as a work of art and a statement piece. A majestic centrepiece for the bedroom.

It is also beautifully upholstered in four colours: Black Shadow, Phantom Charcoal, Natural Shale and Traditional Blue. Each possible colour is combined with polished leather appliquésvegetable tanned, molding reinforced with gold brass rivets and mirror-finished wooden edges.

Likewise, it is available with several types of mattress supports, soft, medium and firm, and, being completely handcrafted, the Grand Vividus can be manufactured in any size. A quality from 170 years of history that is also felt in the rest of the firm’s beds, such as Drēmar, which combines the best materials and six generations of craftsmanship, and which has positioned Hästens as an official supplier to the Royal Court of Sweden.

These brands are available at bdhome, the temple of rest in Marbella, which offers the most exclusive products with professional and personalised advice.

Whenviewing a property

WHEN viewing a property, it’s crucial to carefully assess various aspects to ensure it aligns with your needs and preferences. Start by evaluating its location, considering factors like safety, amenities, and proximity to essential services such as schools and transportation. Pay close attention to the property’s structural integrity, checking for signs of damage or wear and tear. Test the plumbing and electrical systems to ensure they function properly and safely. Assess the HVAC system for efficiency and reliabili-

ty, and inspect insulation and ventilation for comfort and energy efficiency. Take note of the condition of appliances and fixtures, ensuring they are in good working order. Check windows and doors for proper functionality and security.

Evaluate outdoor areas for maintenance needs and usability. If applicable, assess parking availability and

convenience. Ensure the property complies with local regulations and has necessary permits. Consider potential maintenance and renovation needs, factoring them into your decision-making process.

Finally, trust your instincts and assess the overall feel of the property to determine if it’s a place where you can envision yourself living comfortably.

Selling your home is a difficult process. But you are not alone, we are with you on this new journey...

Foreign buyers choose

CASARES, Nerja and Estepona are the favourite places for foreigners to buy a home.

Burriana beach, the bay of Casares and the area from Guadalobón to Bahía Dorada in Estepona are the favourite destinations for Swedes, Poles and Dutch buyers in Malaga Province, according to idealista.

The district of Burriana, in Nerja, tops the ranking of the favourite places for Swedish citizens, when it comes to buying a home. This area has 66 per cent international demand, followed by other districts in the same municipality.

In the top positions of this ranking is also the bay of Casares, with an international demand of 54 per cent and in which citizens from Poland stand out as the highest number of buyers.

This is followed by the western part of Estepona, including the areas of Guadalobon, Buena s Noches and Bahía Dorada. All these neighbourhoods have an international demand for housing of over 50 per cent, mainly from Dutch nationals.

This is followed by the Puerto Banus area of Marbella with 51 per cent international demand, with buyers from Sweden standing out, according to the idealista ranking.

In 2023, foreigners made 15 per cent of all home purchases in Spain with a total of 88,000 property purchase and sale transactions, according to data from the Property Registrars.

SPAIN has long been a dream destination for British expats, offering sunny weather, beautiful beaches, and rich cultural experiences. Whether you’re searching for a holiday home, retirement spot, or a new start, buying property in Spain can be both exciting and complex.

Here are some top tips on how you can simplify the process and save money. Before you start your property search, setting a realistic budget is crucial. Take into account additional costs like legal fees, taxes, and maintenance. Also consider the exchange rate between the pound and the euro, as this can have a significant impact on your budget.

Think about your long-term plans, whether renting out the property, using it as a holiday home, or living there permanently. Planning your finances effectively can help ensure your Spanish property remains a sound investment. Spend time in your chosen area to understand the local lifestyle and amenities. Speak with other expats and locals for insights into the community and

property market.

Opening a Spanish bank account is advised for managing propertyrelated expenses, such as utility bills and taxes. It simplifies transactions and ensures compliance with local banking requirements.

Navigating the legalities of buying property in Spain can be challenging, especially with language barriers and local laws. It’s essential to hire an independent lawyer specialising in Spanish real estate to help you understand the legal aspects and verify property ownership. If you need a mortgage, research options available to expats. Spanish banks offer mortgages to non-residents, but terms and interest rates vary.

Compare different lenders and seek professional advice to find the best deal. Finally, understand the tax implications of owning property in Spain, both locally and in the UK. Consult with a tax advisor to ensure compliance with tax laws in both countries. With careful planning and the right support, buying a property in Spain can be a rewarding and

enjoyable experience, allowing you to enjoy the Spanish sunshine in no time. While this may sound daunting, Currencies Direct is on hand to help you secure a competitive exchange rate and help simplify the purchase process with our revolutionary PropertyPay service.

Originally from the UK, Corinna’s professional background includes significant roles at Citibank and the fund management company Gordian Knot. Her passion for property began early, involving herself in buying and renovating projects back in the UK. This passion only grew when she and her husband moved to Spain in 2002 with their four children. Since then, they have continued to invest in off-plan projects and the renovation of beautiful old homes in Marbella.

Corinna’s extensive experience in the real estate market has equipped her with the skills to help clients find their perfect homes. Buying or selling

ONE of the peculiarities of the housing market at the moment is the difference between the high percentage of people who wish to buy a home and the small number of Spaniards who are selling.

Within the overall real estate activity in the first six months of 2024, 78 per cent of enquiries are from buyers or aspiring buyers but, on the other hand, there are only 15 per cent of sellers making contact with agents. In addition, another 6 per cent are participating in both markets (selling and buying at the same time).

This is one of the conclusions of the report ‘Radiography of the housing market in the first half of 2024’ prepared by Fotocasa

Research, which aims to analyse the current situation of the real estate market in Spain.

“The abrupt change in monetary policy with the rise in interest rates has been a turning point for the real estate market.

Buyers are approaching the market but the supply does not meet their needs. In this context of mismatch, prices are rising in a situation that com-

plicates accessibility to housing,” commented María Matos, Director of Studies and spokesperson for Fotocasa. The report concludes that the real estate market is in a change of cycle and a process of adaptation after the intense activity generated by the pandemic, at the same time as it is digesting the interest rate rises driven by the European Central Bank.

Profitability of property investment

INVESTING in real estate is good business, if you have savings, buying a property will be more profitable than having it in the bank.

The real estate platform Idealista publishes its profitability index by provincial capitals every quarter. It analyses four products: housing, commercial premises, offices and garages. All generate good rental income, although some more than others.

Commercial premises and offices are the most profitable real estate investments in Malaga Province. The least profitable is buying and then renting a parking space, although it always pays more than a 10-year bond. In the first case, gross profitability in the first quarter of 2024 was over 8 per

cent. Offices are offering a yield of just over 7 per cent, slightly less than in December. There are many companies wanting to set up in the province and there is not enough space for all of them.

One of the solutions that is being developed at breakneck speed is coworking spaces and, despite the growing number of these types of spaces, their occupancy level is high and there are even some that are occupied by a single company.

With regard to housing, real estate also yields a good return, although slightly lower than the other sectors because the purchase price is so high. However, the yield is stable at around 6 per cent without taking resale into account.

Minimalist living

MINIMALIST living, characterised by simple and elegant interior design, emphasises the beauty of simplicity and the function of space. This design philosophy strips away excess, focusing on the essentials to create environments that are both serene and sophisticated.

Central to minimalist interiors is the concept of ‘less is more’. Spaces are uncluttered, each item chosen for its functionality and aesthetic appeal. Clean lines, neutral colour palettes, and natural light dominate, creating an atmosphere of calm and

openness. Furniture in a minimalist home is often sleek and functional, with a preference for quality over quantity. Pieces are strategically placed to maximise space and flow, avoiding overcrowding and ensuring that each item has a purpose.

Materials play a crucial role in minimalist design. Natural elements such as wood, stone, and metal are favoured, adding texture and warmth

without overwhelming the senses. The use of these materials in their most natural state enhances the simplicity and elegance of the space. In addition, the minimalist approach often includes smart storage solutions to maintain an organised and clutter-free environment, reinforcing the notion that every item has its place.

The beauty of minimalist living lies in its ability to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also promote mental clarity and well-being. By reducing visual noise and emphasising order, minimalist interiors foster a sense of tranquility and focus. This design style encourages mindful living, where the emphasis is on appreciating the quality and craftsmanship of a few well-chosen pieces rather than the accumulation of many.

In essence, minimalist living is about creating harmony and balance through simplicity. It is a celebration of space, light, and form, where elegance is achieved through restraint and thoughtful design choices.

Mortgage market

However, 2024, appears improved; iAhorro mortgage director, Simone Colombelli, had previously predicted this year to be the one of “recovery” for Spain’s mortgage market.

This year, Fotocasa revealed that from June, the market will be able to see that “access to housing improves as the conditions for access to mortgage credit are lowered.”

Idealista, for its part, noted that in 2024 “interest rates are beginning to refl ect the drop in the Euribor, as well as the greater competition between banks. This strong mortgage war is being fought fundamentally in fi xed and mixed mortgages, which continue to dominate the market.”

Throughout the past two years, both clients and banks preferred mixed mortgages to a fi xed or variable one, since the rise in the Euribor made variable mortgages more costly.

Mixed mortgages on the other hand, have a fi xed initial period, lasting from three to 15 years and a second variable period until the end of the term, providing a certainty in a remaining fee despite the Euribor rate rise.

Understanding different property valuations is crucial when dealing with property in Spain.

Key Values

TWO key values to consider are cadastral value and market value.

Cadastral value, known as ‘valor catastral’ in Spain, is the administrative value assigned to a property by the property registry.

It determines property taxes and aims to ensure fair taxation.

Factors influencing cadastral value include location, construction qua-

lity, land value, property age, renovations, historical significance, and surrounding changes.

The value is adjusted annually based on government budgets but doesn’t reflect market dynamics.

To prevent it from exceeding 50 per cent of the market value, a market coefficient of 0.5 is typically applied. Market value, on the

other hand, is what a buyer is willing to pay for a property in the current real estate market. It fluctuates based on market conditions, demand, and economic factors, making it a crucial aspect of property transactions.

Understanding these valuations helps in making informed decisions when buying, selling, or owning property in Spain.

A top class real estate service

I STARTED Blue Gecko Estates in August 2023 with one thing in mind: to ensure that our clients got total transparency from us. My focus since then has been to step into our client’s shoes and see it from their point of view, even when the situation does not go our way. This, coupled with a solid understanding of buyer and seller requirements, are our two main ingredients for delivering a top-class real estate service. But it’s not just about the property sale. There are dozens of service providers involved in making the dream come alive for our clients. I love working with the right network to ensure this happens, including the best lawyers, FX partners, mortgage advisors, interior designers, logistics people, architects, insuran-

ce brokers, builders, painters, electricians… well you get the picture! Blue Gecko Estates covers the residential areas of Benalmadena to East Marbella and the hilltop communities of Benalmadena Pueblo, Mijas Pueblo and La Mairena. The Costa del Sol is a strong second home market, and as a result, we work with a diverse range of international clients, alongside the local community, all searching for their piece of paradise.

If you would like to speak about your next real estate search or require a free valuation of your property in preparation for listing, we would be more than happy to arrange a face-to-face meeting or video call to find out more about your journey. We hope to see you out there!

Prepare for the worst

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT

ONE of the lessons I have learned in life is that it is generally more advantageous to prepare for the worst. In my younger days, I was an avid flower child. I truly believed that love and peace was the answer to all our human shortcomings. (And still do.)

Unfortunately, I was rudely awakened by the fact that not everyone followed the same ideals. As reality slowly set in, and the rose coloured glasses subsequently misted up, I begun to realise that metaphorically, if I attempted to offer a bunch of flowers to an adversary bearing a Kalashnikov rifle, the one who walked away from the encounter would not be me!

Survival in the real world meant reluctantly discarding the floral specs and facing up to a future full of uncertainties. Twenty-five years ago I wrote that if the West didn’t curb the unchecked immigration from the Middle East, in a few years it would be too late. You should have heard the ridicule I received for that particu-

lar prediction, mainly from the mere handful of readers who consider my views reflect that of an elderly bigoted racist and are always inclined to shout the loudest. Well so be it. I simply cannot let this week pass by without a mention of a subject glaringly prominent on social media. A heart wrenching topic that has attracted thousands of comments from the ladies of Western society, but naturally received no mention whatsoever from the leftie woke controlled media.

The truth of the matter is that the ladies, particularly those who reside in the big UK cities, are becoming frightened to even walk down the street. Everywhere they go they are catcalled, followed and insulted by sexist comments from large numbers of men who now congregate in our towns and cities. Young men, none of whom, according to one extremely perturbed Lady, are of British nationality. Well of course they’re not.

The majority of these young immigrants hail from Islamic societies who consider any female not clad from head to foot, a loose woman. Sex objects to ridicule, insult (and possibly attack) with impunity. Never

forget this old ‘bigot’ resided in an Islamic country for eight years and can tell you that all of their women are considered second or third class citizens. Almost unbelievably these men, who are endangering and insulting the Western female, are those who the woke brigade want to integrate into a happily diverse and peaceful Western society! Ha, gimme a break. The truth of the matter is that these male immigrants and their ancestors have followed the Islamic teachings for thousands of years and it will NEVER happen. They actually want us to integrate into their culture and are hell bent and utterly supported by their peers in the quest.

When is the West going to wake up and drum out the woke imbeciles who are endeavouring to control our societies and will ultimately provoke utter disaster?

Let’s hope the ol boy’s majority of readers see fit to reply to this piece and not leave it to the leftie minority to once again voice their utterly unwelcome and immature reactions.

What’s in a name

THE sharp-eyed and sharp-eared will have noticed that official announcements during the Euro 2024 football tournament refer to the Netherlands, not Holand.

Although many English-speakers still tend to use either or both of the names without giving the matter much thought, North Holland and South Holland are only two of the Netherlands’ 12 provinces.

It is also true however, that at one point Holland was more dominant as it was once the largest contributor to the overall economy and wealth of the Netherlands.

The country’s formal, official name is now Kingdom of the Netherlands and from January 1, 2020, the Dutch government announced that it would refer to itself only as the Netherlands, and not Holland.

Dutch companies and the Tourist Board followed suit and also agreed to stick to the Netherlands term, together with new logos incorporating the NL letters.

Nevertheless, the Dutch national side, having been referred to as Holland in the course of so many previous championships, is still nicknamed Holland.

NETHERLANDS: ‘Holland’ still a nickname for the national side.

They can supply all leading brands of air conditioners, but strongly recommend Fujitsu General, which they believe to be the most reliable unit and installation comes with the company’s three years parts and labour warranty.

you an outsourced repair company but will send one of their own highly trained technicians to repair the fault and they undertake to source any replacement parts within 48 hours.

tions available to you.

There is a wide range of different alternatives available which include movement sensors (which will turn off air conditioners if no movement is detected), coin metres and timer switches so if you want to save money and help the environment, just contact Cool and Cosy.

One other way of saving energy and cost over a period

of time is by the installation of solar panels so if you want to conserve funds and get free hot water whatever the weather, this is an easy and very practical option to consider.

Robert and his team of bilingual installers at Cool and Cosy cover an area along the coast from Nerja to Sotogrande and inland as well so there is no problem in obtaining help and advice in no time at all.

Walking Football Club: More Than Just a Game

ON Saturday June 22, I attended an awards ceremony for a local walking football club at The Clubhouse at La Sala, a stunning venue renowned for its vibrant ambience, interactive games with a focus on golf, and impeccable service. Eager to learn more about walking football, I arrived early to chat with Tony Aiello, Chairman of AC Benahavís Football Club, who shared insights into the sport and its community impact.

Walking football, a sport gaining popularity among those over 50, was the highlight of the evening. It has become a lifeline for many, combining physical activity with community spirit. “Initially, it was just a group of guys looking to stay active,” Tony explained. “It was tough to get teams together at first, but soon enough, we had over 50 members.”

Walking football differs from traditional football as players must always have one foot on the ground, minimising the risk of injury. It’s quite fast-paced,” Tony noted. “The main rule is no running, which makes it accessible and safer for older adults.”

winning the Euro Cup in Portugal in 2023 and the Andalucian title in 2024.

Burn Baby Burn A Spectacular San Juan Celebration at The Beach House

ON the magical night of June 22, The Beach House in Elviria, Marbella, transformed into a vibrant epicentre for the annual San Juan festival, marking a celebration that was a local favourite and a highlight for visitors from afar. Under the stewardship of Guy, the visionary behind The Beach House, the event has not only become a staple but has escalated in grandeur each year. This year, without a doubt, was the best yet, with every detail finely tuned to offer an unparalleled experience.

An Evening of Electrifying Entertainment

The festivities began explosively as The Masquerade Duo took the stage. Their electrifying performance featured a mix of international hits that instantly had the crowd on their feet. The energy was contagious; guests danced with abandon, either on the dance floor or right from their tables, waving their napkins in tune with the vibrant beats.

As the duo’s last note faded, DJ Khathia took the helm, turning the evening into a dynamic dance party. The musical journey continued with Sergio Trumpet, who provided a roaming performance that felt intimate and exhilarating, weaving through the crowd with his melodies.

Culinary Wonders and Legendary Cocktails

The Beach House outdid itself with a culinary offering that catered to all tastes. The star of the menu was the Surf & Turf Sharing Board. This lavish platter included lobster with black truffle mornay, prime fillet steak, crispy chips, and fresh asparagus, all complemented by onion rings, a mixed salad, and a choice of peppercorn or béarnaise sauce. The drink of the night, ‘El Deseo’, became a fast favourite. It blended Moscatel wine with orange and lime juice - a refreshing tribute to the San Juan traditions that promised luck to those who walked over seven waves at midnight without falling.

A Night Lit by Fairy Lights and Fire

As the sun set, the atmosphere grew even more enchanting. Stylish hats equipped with fairy lights were distributed among the attendees, creating a luminous sea of lights against the night sky. A spectacular bonfire further brightened the beachfront scene, which not only served as a gathering point but also as a background for countless photographs.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the fire performance by Miriam Andrades, whose daring acts with fire synchronised beautifully with the night’s theme, adding an element of danger and awe to the festivities.

Celestial Wonders and Heartfelt Connections

The celebration also coincided with the summer solstice, providing a rare opportunity to witness the beauty of a red-orange moon that painted the sky with its warm hues. This celestial spectacle added a profound layer to an already memorable evening.

The fireworks were a grand finale that mirrored the fiery performances and the vibrant energy of the night. Every element from the superb entertainment to the exceptional service contributed to a palpable party atmosphere, making it a truly magical night for everyone involved.

A Benchmark for Festivities

As the night concluded, guests left with hearts full of joy, already anticipating the next San Juan celebration. It was a testament to the hard work and vision of Team Beach House, who once again raised the bar for what a festive gathering could be. Congratulations to Guy and his team for crafting a perfect celebration of the longest day of the year, truly making it a night to remember at The Beach House - bookings are already being taken for 2025 …

Sala Thai Restaurant: Bringing the Flavours of Thailand to Fuengirola

SALA THAI, the newest addition to Fuengirola’s vibrant dining scene, has quickly become a favourite among locals and visitors alike. Located in a charming corner of the town, Sala Thai promises an authentic culinary journey through Thailand, thanks to the exceptional skills of Head Chef Lan and his dedicated team.

I had the pleasure of experiencing this first-hand during a recent birthday celebration for Yupin, one of Sala Thai’s enthusiastic patrons. The restaurant’s warm ambiance and traditional decor immediately set the tone for an evening of delightful indulgence.

Chef Lan, renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, uses only the finest ingredients in his dishes. His mission is clear: to bring a piece of

Thailand to each person who dines at Sala Thai. The buffet selection on offer that evening was a testament to this commitment, featuring a variety of well-known Thai dishes. Guests savoured the rich flavours of Thai Green Curry, the comforting noodles of Pad Thai, and the crispiness of Spring Rolls. The Chicken Teriyaki skewers, prepared with a secret sauce, were a particular highlight, leaving everyone eager for more.

One of the guests, Sanchai, shared an interesting tidbit about the culinary preferences of Southern Thailand, where people prefer their food with an extra kick of spice. At Sala Thai, diners are encouraged to enhance their dishes with additional spices, allowing them to tailor their meal to their own taste preferences.

This flexibility in spicing dishes truly makes Sala Thai stand out, offering a personalised dining experience that caters to all palates.

The staff, led by the ever-friendly Jose, have been warmly welcomed by the Fuengirola community. Their hospitality and dedication to providing an excellent dining experience are evident in every interaction. The restaurant’s opening hours are thoughtfully planned to accommodate both lunch and dinner guests. Sala Thai is open for lunch on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Interestingly, they are closed on Wednesday, adhering to a Thai superstition that considers it unlucky to cut anything on that day.

Dining at Sala Thai is not just about the food; it’s about the experience.

The outdoor terrace offers a comfortable and serene setting, perfect for enjoying a meal in the pleasant Fuengirola weather. For those who prefer to dine at home, Sala Thai also offers a convenient takeaway service. Additionally, the restaurant caters to parties, making it an excellent choice for special occasions.

With ample parking available, accessing Sala Thai is hassle-free, adding to the overall convenience for patrons. Whether you’re a Thai food aficionado or new to the cuisine, Sala Thai promises an unforgettable dining experience that captures the essence of Thailand right here in Fuengirola.

Rafael Álvarez from the Order of Saint Lazarus explained that the Order, “dates back to the time of the Crusades, when it was in charge of the leper colonies, and has been adapting

to the times, becoming a non-profit foundation which, in the case of Marbella, has been carrying out its work for more than 20 years and has been organising this gala for 13 years.”

He said that the proceeds, “will cover the scholarships for doctors specialising in the treatment of leprosy, because it is a disease that still exists, and under the agreement signed with Marbella Voluntaria, food, hygiene and support products will be offered through our ‘Eating comes first’ programme.”

expands into the new world Bioparc

THE new expansion of Fuengirola’s Bioparc is inspired by the historic first circumnavigation of the world carried out by Juan Sebastián Elcano and the men of the ship Victoria.

Just like the Spanish explorers did, the expansion will allow visitors to discover the rich biodiversity of Central and South American reefs, rivers and jungles, thus promoting greater awareness and appreciation for their conservation.

The park’s design accurately reproduces these habitats, offering an immersive and educational experience that connects the history of the discovery of nature in the New World, in a tour of reefs, navigation rooms, a cabinet of curiosities, Amazonian aquariums and a large aviary in which, through collapsed cenotes, you reach a Mayan pyramid.

Visitors will travel from the Bronze Age to the Renais-

sance, symbolised by an eight-metre-high sphere and the recreation of the celestial disk of Nebra and the map of the Copernicus system.

Behind large saltwater aquariums Bioparc has recreated a reef with dozens of types of anemones and corals which provide shelter for fish and invertebrates.

The journey continues towards the interior of the American continent, through a museum hall dedicated to navigation. The visitor can see frescoes from the ships

of the expedition, maps, letters from Elcano and Magellan and a facsimile of Miller’s Atlas, among other fetures. The room of the bromeliads takes you to theSouth American jungles and an underwater corridor takes you to the Mayan world with a sunken Mayan temple.

A 14-metre-high aviary contains a jungle in which species of birds and Central and South American mammals coexist and where the visitor is immersed in the interior of the Yucatan jungle.

Voices to Celebrate Life

THE ‘Magnum Mysterium’ Choir of Estepona will celebrate on Saturday June 29, the 18th Choral Encounter ‘Ciudad de Estepona’, accompanied by the ‘Virgen de la Escalera’ Choral Society of Rota.

The Magnum Mysterium Choir has been developing its musical activity in Estepona for more than 30 years. Originally called

‘Villa de Estepona’, it was founded in 1987. In its beginnings it was set up as a Chamber Choir. It has been incorporating into its repertoire works of all styles and from all times, from music from Eastern countries, and popular titles to film music, musicals and scores by contemporary composers. In 1992, the Choir was constituted as a non-profit Cultural Association, with the aim of promoting the study and practise of quality choral music. It has given concerts in various cities throughout Spain and has participated in international competitions, exchanges and meetings, taking the name of Estepona beyond its borders.

The councillor for Festivities, Yolanda Marín, said: “Our city is art with capital letters and this series of shows is the best for music and humour,” said the councillor, adding that the town hall has collaborated with organisers, Grupo Mundo to, “make the cost of tickets affordable.”

The head of Communications of Grupo Mundo, José Núñez, said that

this first year of the festival, which will be joined by new artists, “is the seed of something that we want to continue to grow in the coming years. We will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the venue with three big names from the national scene, who we are convinced will shine on stage,” said Núñez, who added that, “Marbella is a place to be and a place we want to be.”

‘Noche Viva’

FUENGIROLA Town Hall is encouraging the town’s traders to register for the 2024 edition of the Noche Viva (Live Night). This was announced by the councillor for Commerce, Francisco Javier García Lara, who explained that this event to boost the local economy and promote commercial activity will take place on Saturday August 3.

Fiesta time

Applications to participate can be downloaded from the municipal website.

“The Departments of Festivities and Commerce, together with the members of the Commerce and Hospitality Board, have been working for some time on the Noche Viva 2024, the great festival of Fuengirola’s commerce,” said García Lara.

The councillor explained that, “we are preparing ac-

tivities in different parts of the town: Plaza Reyes Católicos, Calle San Antonio, Calle San Pancracio, Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza Marqués de Cardeñosa, Calle España, Plaza de España, Plaza Pedro Cuevas, Plaza de la Hispanidad, Plaza Theresa Zabell, Puerto Deportivo, Calle Camilo José Cela and Plaza Punta Umbría, among others.

“What we intend is to boost trade in each of these areas, that the influx of public is remarkable that night and that our commercial establishments are promoted, are given publicity and that, consequently, increase their sales,” said the councillor who encouraged shopkeepers to participate, “because without them this activity would be

meaningless, so we invite them to join this initiative, to join together and collaborate to organise activities or decorate their streets, to make this night more eye-catching.”

García Lara explained that “registering is very simple, you just have to download the application form from the town hall website or pick it up from the town hall information point and hand it in before July 5.

“There is still plenty of time left, but it is an initiative that requires a lot of organisation and logistical preparation.

“That’s why we encourage all shopkeepers to join in this year’s edition and make a contribution by helping us with their work, their ideas and initiatives to make the Noche Viva shine in a special way.”

ESTEPONA Fair will begin on Tuesday July 2 with the Caseta Municipal hosting free concerts by artists of different musical styles including: King Africa, David Barrull, José Ortiz, Miguel Campello, Merche and Las Hermanas Rodes.

The festivities will last until Sunday July 7. This year the town hall will have the TV presenter Carlos Sobera as the town crier and there will be free horse-drawn carriage rides every afternoon.

To announce the start of the fair, the Batucada (a percussion ensemble) ‘Bloco Eleguá’, recent winners of the International Batucada Festival, PERCUmon 2024, will perform a parade through the town centre on Tuesday evening, followed by the reading of the opening speech by the actor from Bilbao, Carlos Sobera. The event will take place at 9.30pm on Avenida de España, with a performance by the singer Esperanza Soria. After the proclamation, the traditional fireworks display will begin, followed by the inauguration and lighting of the fairground lighting.

As a new feature for 2024, people who are extremely sensitive to loud sounds will be able to pick up hearing protectors at the Civil Protection booth, located at the entrance to the Fairgrounds. In this way they will be able to reduce the effects of exposure to noise during the fair.

Wednesday of the fair will be dedicated to children, who will be able to enjoy a children’s party at 7pm with ‘Los Narizotas’ from the Mr Pollo Circus, in the Municipal Stand. In addition, all the attractions will have a 50 per cent discount.

On Thursday July 4, there will be a Party for the Elderly in the Caseta Municipal, which will feature the performance of José Ortiz, a participant in the television contest ‘Se llama Copla’.

This year, from Thursday to Saturday, a free horse-drawn carriage ride will be available every afternoon and, from Friday to Sunday between midday and 8pm, the Horse Walk will be open to all riders, who are recommended to dress up in Andalucian style and with their horses decorated.

Fans of the equine world have an appointment on Sunday July 7 at the seventh Carriage competition. Mijas with soul

THE mayor of Mijas, Ana Mata, has launched ‘Mijas with soul by candlelight’, an initiative which from July 5 to 7 will see the town decorated with more than 15,000 candles, a medieval market and a series of concerts.

This new event, which continues and expands ‘Mijas with soul’, which began on May 30, features a full schedule of activities designed for all tastes and ages.

First of all, some of the most emblematic spots in Mijas Pueblo, including the Plaza Virgen de

la Peña, the Plaza de la Constitución, the Calle San Sebastián and the area of the Muralla, will all be lit up with candles. The aim is to create a magical atmosphere that highlights and enhances the innate charm of Mijas.

This will be accompanied by a market with a medieval atmosphere which, for three days, will offer residents and visitors a tour of different parts of the village where they can enjoy parades (three shows are planned for Friday and five on Saturday and Sunday), juggling, jesters and stilt

walkers, Andalucian music, a large children’s play area and belly dancing shows. There will also be children’s attractions including a Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round and a pirate ship.

Ana Mata said, “we wanted to put together a set of events which young and old can enjoy. Nobody doubts that Mijas is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and, with this initiative, we want to show precisely that: that we are captivated by its innate magic, by its soul.”

Music will be high on the agenda: the Miguel González Berral auditorium will see shows every day at 9.30pm and tickets can be purchased at https://lacocheraen tradas. com/ from €15.

In addition, a bus service has been arranged from the Las Lagunas and La Cala fairgrounds, as well as from the car park located in the quarry in Mijas Pueblo. This service will be operational from 6pm until 2am.

Water park opens

ALHAURIN EL GRANDE Town Hall has announced that, from Monday July 1, the Water Park attraction, located in the municipal sports centre, will be open to the public.

It will remain open during the months of July and August from Monday to Friday, in the mornings from 10am until 2pm and in the afternoons from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. On Saturdays the facility will be open from 9.30am to 1.30pm.

Councillor for Sports, Sergio Rodríguez, explained the reasons why this municipal facility has been out of use

for almost a year. “To open a leisure facility like this there are a series of requirements to be met. Not only is it enough to have the installation approved by the Health Department, which is important, but other equally essential requirements must also be met, which we didn’t have last summer and which we have been able to achieve this year.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that everything is in order so that everyone is legally and physically insured and that there are no problems,” concluded the councillor.

The festival kicks off on Monday July 8 with a performance by the Ralph Moore Quintet with a contemporary jazz style.

The musician toured and recorded in the 80s and early 90s with the greatest artists of the genre. On Monday July 22 it will be the turn of Pedro Pablo.

The Cuban musician has a long and renowned musical career whose aim is to share the experience of the true sound of Cuban jazz from the golden years of the 30s, 40s and 50s.

The German band ‘The Sazerac Swingers’ will take the stage on Monday August 5. They will transport the audience back to the golden 1920s, the era of jazz, starting in New Orleans and passing through Chicago and Harlem, where jazz began its conquest of dance halls all over the world.

On Monday August 19, the Spanish group ‘Swing For Five’ will perform a soundtrack of the 20th century. The songs, in the basic repertoire of jazz, were composed for the cinema from well-known films including: ‘Hello Dolly’, ‘Pinocchio’, ‘The Voyage to Nowhere’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’, among others.

All concerts will take place at 9pm with free admission.

Indie and alternative

ALHAUTOR, the indie and alternative music festival in Alhaurin de la Torre, celebrates its fifth year in summer 2024 with four concerts between Wednesday July 31 and Saturday August 3.

The cycle is once again organised by the production company ‘Oh Salvaje’ in collaboration with the Area of Activities in El Portón, Major Events and Festivals, and will once again take place in the auditorium of the Finca Municipal El Portón. The presentation was made by the councillor Andrés García and the representative of the organising production company, Eduardo Flores.

The programme features big

names in Spanish music including Ángeles, Víctor, Gloria y Javier (July 31), Rodrigo Cuevas (August 1), Iseo & Dodosound (August 2), and Sevilla Distorsión + Alcalá Norte (August 3). Iseo & Dodosound performed there before, in 2021 and now they return to El Portón. The concert on Saturday August 3 is dedicated to emerging bands and will be free for the public.

The councillor for Activities at El Portón, Major Events and Festivals, Andrés García, invited all residents to attend the concerts in this series, which are held in a ‘unique setting’. Tickets are on sale on the website www.alhau tor.com.

ON May 30, Gunnel’s Fashion Moda celebrated its 20th anniversary at its store located in Centro Comercial Plaza, Puerto Banus, Marbella. The celebration was a memorable event that combined fashion, elegance, and solidarity, featuring the distinguished participation of Caroline Svedbom and her ‘Front Row Collection’.

The main event was a dazzling fashion show, showcasing carefully selected brands for every occasion, highlighting the sophistication and style that characterise Gunnel’s Fashion Moda. Caroline Svedbom’s presentation of the ‘Front Row Collection’ added a touch of avant-garde and elegance, displaying jewellery pieces that blend modern design with timeless glamour.

In addition to fashion, solidarity was a key highlight of the night, thanks to the organisation of a grand raffle with numerous prizes. The proceeds, amounting to a generous total of €6,094.15, were donated to the Cudeca Foundation. This amount will be used to continue the mission of providing high-quality palliative care to individuals with advanced illnesses and supporting their families.

The Cudeca Foundation expresses its deepest gratitude to Gunnel’s Fashion Moda for their commitment and generosity. Initiatives like these are essential to continue providing assistance and care to those in need within our community.

A special kind of caring

The Cudeca Hospice Foundation is a non-profit organisation that provides comprehensive professional care for people with cancer and other advanced illnesses, as well as support for their families. Cudeca treats through the philosophy of palliative care, a field in which it has a great deal of experience and competence, and from which it offers its ‘special kind of caring’. Cudeca not only treats the physical illness, but also responds to the psychological, social and spiritual needs of the disease.

In 2023, Cudeca Hospice cared for 1,864 people and provided support to more than 2,400 relatives. Since 1992, almost 19,000 patients have been cared for by the Interdisciplinary Programmes of: home care, day care centre and inpatient unit; supported by psychosocial care programmes and rehabilitation programmes. Cudeca’s medical attention and care is completely free of charge. Cudeca Hospice works to ensure quality of life, autonomy and dignity for the people it cares for until the very end. It began in 1992 thanks to the hard work and dedication of Joan Hunt, an English born resident of the Costa del Sol. After the death of her husband from cancer, she decided to dedicate her life to helping others in the same situation. To this end, she founded Cudeca.

PETS

Cats can learn tricks too

CONTRARY to popular belief, cats can learn tricks just like dogs.

While felines are often seen as more independent and less trainable, with the right approach and patience, they can perform a variety of tricks, enhancing their mental stimulation and bond with their owners.

Training a cat requires understanding their motivations. Unlike dogs, cats are not as driven by praise but can be highly motivated by treats and play. Clicker training is an effective method, using a clicker to mark desired behaviours followed by a reward. Start with simple tricks like ‘sit’ or ‘high five’, gradually moving to more complex tasks as

your cat becomes more comfortable. Consistency and short, positive training sessions are key. Keep sessions brief to maintain your cat’s interest and always end on a positive note.

Training not only teaches tricks but also helps build a stronger relationship between you and your feline friend, proving that cats are just as capable of learning as their canine counterparts

Doggy discomfort

YOUR dog or cat pressing their head against a wall is not a laughing matter, it more than likely needs your help.

It may look like your pup is being told off or performing a party trick, but the reality is that it is probably due to something more sinister.

They are trying to relieve the pressure from their head and an urgent trip to the vet is what is needed to relieve the poor animal from its pain.

Many conditions could lead your pet to adopt this unusual behaviour, but it is usually due to some form of neurological disorder: Head trauma from a fall or a car accident can result in brain bleeding.

Salt imbalances are one of the reasons; dogs require a high level of salt to function and a lack of this leads to the swelling of cells, including brain cells.

I, like our HouseSitMatch pet-sitters, love animals

IT may surprise you to learn that even as the founder of the House SitMatch network I love animals and pet-sitting too. We travel so much for our work that keeping pets at home is not fair. So I, like our house-sitting animal lovers, get my fix by house and pet-sitting through our network.

By joining a house-sitting platform like HouseSitMatch we facilitate an old fashioned barter exchange where a pet owner provides the sitter with free accommodation and the sitter cares for the pets and property with due care and attention.

Plus HouseSitMatch saves money as the pet-sitting is free!

If you use HouseSitMatch.com you find free checked pet-sitters who pay their way to stay in your home caring for your pets in your absence. It’s an arrangement facilitated by a managed online system. Our house and pet-sitting works as an exchange of services - free accommodation for free pet care!

How does it work?

Your pet can suffer from human conditions including brain tumours and strokes.

According to South East Veterinary Neurology, “Out of all the neurological problems that affect dogs, especially older dogs, brain tumours are one of the most common.”Lead poisoning or other toxins can also prompt this kind of pain relief method.

And finally, rabies and parasites are common reasons for your doggy’s discomfort.

The majority of these conditions do have cures, but only if caught and treated with enough time.

These problems tend to be accompanied by other symptoms therefore any behaviour that you consider out of character is worth checking out with your vet.

All members are checked for safety, and you choose which house-sitters come to care for your pets in your absence.

Costa Blanca North Global appeal

ALICANTE concluded its Hogueras festivities with record-breaking attendance and a hotel occupancy rate exceeding 93 per cent.

La Nit de la Cremà, held in the early hours of June 25, marked the end of the Bonfire celebrations, which saw over 1.5 million visitors.

The festivities also achieved full capacity in the accommodation and catering sectors, with more than a million people participating in events daily.

Cristina Cutanda, councillor for Festivals of the Alicante City Council, praised the festival’s unique global appeal, noting the historic records in hotel and restaurant occupancy.

She also highlighted the absence of significant incidents and the high artistic quality of the monuments as notable aspects of the 2024 Bonfires.

Participation in the different events held during the holidays has been massive. The streets have been packed, with records of more than a million people per day

Axarquia Inclusive summer camp

VELEZ-MALAGA has launched inclusive summer camps to tackle the social exclusion of children with special needs. These summer camps provide a safe and adapted environment for kids with Special Educational Needs (SEN), ensuring family work-life balance during the summer of 2024. Led by Deputy Mayor Jesús Pérez Atencia and Social Affairs councillor Juan García, this initiative is seen as a model for comprehensive educational diversity support.

The main goal is to include children with SEN in regular recreational activities, ensuring their well-being and personal development in a safe, structured setting. The camps will be held at CEIP Axarquia in Velez-Malaga and CEIP Antonio Checa in Torre del Mar. These locations offer a familiar setting and specialised staff to ensure everyone’s care and safety.

Activities will include playgroups and outdoor activities. Children, aged six to 18 can choose activities based on their interests.

Mallorca

New Netflix show

BRITISH TV presenter and actress, Amanda Holden, is in Mallorca, filming her upcoming Netflix dating show, ‘Cheaters: Unfinished Business’.

‘Cheaters: Unfinished Business’ reunites ex-couples for a chance to rekindle their romance after infidelity. Co-produced by the team behind Love Island, the show promises to explore the complexities of love and forgiveness. Holden expressed her enthusiasm about the project, calling it a ‘dream come true’ and revealing her eagerness to work with experts to help couples navigate their emotional journeys.

Speaking of unfinished business, a public spat recently erupted between Amanda and Sharon Osbourne, after Amanda jumped to Simon Cowell’s defence having heard Sharon and Louis Walsh mocking him on Celebrity Big Brother. Amanda hopes to repair the relationship.

Amanda’s signature style and infectious energy are likely to make the show a must-watch.

Costa Blanca South Community spirit

MORE than 7,000 revellers flooded the streets of Elda for their Moors and Christians’ festivals which took place over five days starting from June 12.

As the Moors and Christians’ festivals in Elda come to a close, we spoke with Aitana Cerdán to understand their significance.

Fifteen-year-old Aitana, a resident of Elda, has been actively participating in the Moors and Christians’ festivals for the past seven years.

“For me and for the people of Elda, the Moors and Christians’ festivals are much more than just parades and dinners,” Aitana says.

“It’s hard to describe the feeling in words, but it’s about the whole town coming together. The streets of Elda are filled with a wonderful sense of community and tradition. It’s an incredible feeling.”

“It’s about the connection between people, the gatherings, and the parades. Very few people aren’t genuinely festive. It’s much more than just a party; it’s a celebration of our culture and community spirit.”

Almeria

Starved of fuel

THE only way that so-called ‘narco boats’ can cross into Spanish waters carrying cargos of drugs is if they have plenty of fuel.

An operation undertaken by the Guardia Civil and the Spanish Tax Agency which has lasted for nearly a year has finally closed one major ‘pipeline’ in Almeria.

Some 50 people known to be members of the ‘Clan de los Lateros’ have been arrested and the entire platform for fuel supply for illicit traffic along the Mediterranean is considered dismantled.

The headquarters of the fuel suppliers was identified as being in Puente del Río, Adra and after the long investigation was complete, officers swooped and seized firearms, €700,000 in cash, expensive cars, a fuel tanker and some 25 boats as well as 40,000 litres of fuel.

Amazingly, one of the leaders of the illegal operation was actually in prison and issued encrypted instructions over a mobile phone that he hid in his prison cell.

Costa Calida Ladies Day

MABS Mazarron, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their loved ones, celebrated a successful Ladies’ Day event on June 21. The event, held to raise funds for their cause, surpassed expectations by collecting over €800.

The highlight of the day was a vibrant fashion show organised by MABS Mazarron, showcasing local style and creativity. Attendees also participated enthusiastically in a raffle, with prizes generously donated by local businesses. The atmosphere was further enhanced by a heartfelt performance from The Harlequin Choir, adding a musical touch to the occasion.

Funds raised during the event will contribute directly to MABS Mazarron’s mission of providing practical assistance and emotional support to people affected by cancer in the community. The organisation expressed gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and sponsors whose contributions made the day a remarkable success.

PET CHARITY

ACE CHARITY ‘El Refugio’ in La Cala de Mijas is a registered charity. We have on average 275 dogs in our care and we receive no help from the town hall or the Andalucian government. We desperately need foster homes and adoptants for our many dogs, especially the small ones and puppies who do not do well in a big shelter. We are grateful for any help offered, including donations of food and blankets.

ARCH - The Andalusian Rescue Centre for Horses, registered charity 8448, is open to visitors on the first Sunday of each month from 10 am until 2pm. Working closely with the Spanish authorities, we rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abused and abandoned horses and donkeys. Come and meet our current rescues, learn about our work and how you may be able to help. Run solely by a small team of dedicated volunteers, the Centre is located between Alhaurin el Grande and Coin in Comm. de Viña Borrego behind Venta Miralmonte. For more information and directions see our website www.horserescuespain.org, our Facebook page Centro Andalusi de Rescate de Caballos or tel. 711 070 099 (93322)

Charging challenge

ELECTRIC mobility in Spain faces a big challenge as many households can’t install chargers for their vehicles on their property.

According to a study by Idealista, a real estate marketplace in southern Europe, more than half of the homes in Spain (55 per cent) lack a priva te garage space, making it hard for residents to charge electric vehicles at home.

The availability of home chargers varies by province.

Malaga leads with 64 per cent of homes having a ga rage suitable for ins talling charging points.

rense at 50 per cent each.

These provinces have at least half of their homes potentially able to install a charger.

In contrast, Guipúzcoa has the lowest availability, with only 25 per cent of homes having a garage.

Following Malaga are Pontevedra at 61 per cent, Guadalajara and Valladolid at 56 per cent, Lugo at 55 per cent, Granada and Cantabria at 52 per cent, Toledo and Murcia with 51 per cent, and Castellon, Segovia, and Ou-

Other provinces with low garage availability include Barcelona and Vizcaya with 30 per cent, Jaén and Córdoba with 32 per cent, Cáceres with 36 per cent, Seville with 37 per cent, and Valencia, Badajoz, Lleida, and Burgos with 38 per cent each.

In Madrid, 40 per cent of homes have a garage.

This disparity shows the varying levels of access to electric vehicle infrastructure across Spain, posing a barrier to the widespread adoption of electric mobility in regions with fewer private garages.

ANDALUCIA WALKING FOOTBALL LEAGUE

A fiesta of football on Axarfusion Finals day!

BOTH Over 50s and 60s Axarfusion Finals took place on Saturday June 22, hosted at Internacionales Mollina’s home ground, a fabulous gesture on their part, as this has been their first season competing in the AWFL.

Over 60s Axarfusion Cup Final

Nerja United 3 v 1 Malaga

The game began with fairly even exchanges between both teams with neither seeming to take the initiative. However, Nerja took the lead throu-

gh a penalty after the Malaga goalie strayed out of his area. This seemed to galvanise the Nerja side and they came out looking much more purposeful after the break. Malaga tried unsuccessfully to fight their way back into the match but, due to excellent organisation and discipline on the part of the Nerja defence, they were always up against it and managed few scoring chances, with the Nerja attack looking more dangerous throughout. Nerja kept up the pressure and scored two more through well-worked free kicks to go 3 - 0 up and, although Malaga were able to find a reply through a well-taken penalty by Mark Sargent following an infringement, the result was a testament to how much improved Nerja have become after a difficult beginning to the league season. Mick Sweeney, Keith Bucknell and Gerry Black were their scorers. Commiserations to Malaga and congratulations to a Nerja side who fully deserved their victory!

Barcelona sign Ellie Roebuck

Talyta Franca, Class 2026, Northwestern University in Qatar BARCELONA has signed the Manchester City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck on a free transfer, as announced by the club’s official website on Wednesday June 19.

The 24-year-old has joined the four-time Champion’s League winners on a two-year contract after the expiration of her contract with City, which will keep her in Spain until 2026.

During her time with the English club, Roebuck won seven domestic trophies and was part of the squad that held all three domestic titles between 2016 and 2017.

The English player also received the 2019-2020 Golden Glove award, for her performance in Manchester City’s first league title win in 2016, in addition to winning the FA Cup and League Cup three times with the club.

Roebuck expressed her enthusiasm for the move in an interview with Barcelona’s official website: “I am very excited. I’d been waiting for this chance for a long time. I’m very happy to be here. You could say that now everything fits and this was the perfect time to come.”

She said she is

opportunity and that there is “nowhere better” to live this new experience than in Barcelona.

“I like to play with the ball at my feet and this is the perfect team to do that with. I enjoy possession and playing out from the back, so I hope to contribute my style,” said Roebuck.

Ellie Roebuck signs with FC Barcelona.
