IN today’s modern fast paced world, where chains of restaurants follow cooking instructions from an external chef, it’s a pleasure to find an oasis of elegance and top quality food.

Ramiro Gago is the perfect example of a charming host who welcomes each of his customers as if they are guests at his home and he is backed up by his wife who is the head chef, his daughter and other members of the family, all of whom are dedicated to making a visit to the restaurant a real experience with a family welcome.

It clearly works, as TripAdvisor rates it number two out of 165 restaurants in San Pedro Alcantara and comments from guests include “Without a doubt one of the best places to eat in Marbella”, “Excellent welcome, service, cuisine and friendliness. Elegant terrace”, “We chose this site based on the opinions of this app and they were not wrong. Incredible place for the location”.

El Cortijo de Ramiro ...... dining at its best

Ramiro left Asturias in northwest Spain when he was just 16 and went to catering school before working at top restaurants in Marbella as a chef and in 1984 opened his first restaurant, but soon discovered that although he was inherently shy, the most important thing in catering is that the “customer comes first”.

This meant that he migrated from the kitchen to front of house and that’s where he has stayed ever since, opening a number of restaurants as well as a catering business, but eventually he decided to concentrate on El Cortijo de Ramiro.

It’s an elegant restaurant in the very exclusive Guadalmina Baja area, easy to get to and importantly with plenty of parking as well as being just a six minute walk from the nearby Guadalmina Hotel.

It’s a bright and popular restaurant which offers a range of top quality Spanish and international dishes and there is a large terrace which opens

in the summer.

Many guests enjoy music as they dine and El Cortijo de Ramiro does regularly have live musicians playing discreetly, but at a level that allows for conversation.

The restaurant which attracts a number of visitors from across Europe (happy that the staff can speak a number of European languages) is open Tuesday to Saturday from 6.30pm to 11.30pm and it is always recommended that you visit the website https://www.elcortijodera miro.es/ or call 952 888 077 to make a reservation.

There is no doubt that El Cortijo de Ramiro at C/ 11, s/n (Guadalmina Baja Urbanization) 29678 Marbella offers a fine dining experience with exceptional levels of comfort and service.

Playing the Selvatic Malaga Fest in Churriana on Sunday July 21, the highly acclaimed US four-piece will get the party started. The band of Will.I.Am, Apl.de.Ap and Taboo, and now unfortunately without the charismatic Fergie, who split in 2017, but

stadiums since their formation in 1995, and 29 years later they are still at the top of international stylish popularity, not least down to their multitude of collaborations with other artists including Shakira. Get your tickets and ‘Boom, Boom Pow!’

The Black Eyed Peas play at the Selvatic Malaga Fest, at the Malaga Fórum, Sunday July 21. The show begins at 7pm, and ticket prices start at €41.70.

AMANS world comedy

SAVE the date - July 23 - as local, yet accidental comedic hero, Lucy Amans, is back, this time at La Clave, Marbella, to present another Open-Mic night session! A wild night of belly laughs and perhaps some flops. Try your hand at recounting those anecdotes, personal observations and just plain old gags. Actually, the crowd is not all that bad. The proceedings will be hosted and presen-

ted by local UK expat, Lucy Amans who escaped to Gibraltar, and soon after to Estepona, where she found the funny side of life and broke into stand-up comedy. Lucy runs ‘Stand. Up Comedy Spain’, the leading and most prolific regular comedy night on the coast. Lucy told the Euro Weekly News, “My comedy is based on my life, it’s rather self-deprecating but not in a sad way and so far, it

has been well-received and because the audience at the shows tend to return regularly, I’ve not had to cope with any heckling although I have a few put downs ready just in case.” So, if like Lucy did, you fancy yourself as a bit of a joker, head down to La Clave, Marbella on July 23. Featuring a line up of fresh comedic talent on the Costa del Sol and hosted by Lucy. Free entry. Reserve your seat via Eventbrite.

Wine tasting

Adam Woodward

A GLASS of wine, please. A regular question when enjoying a terrace on a warm Costa del Sol evening. At any regular terrace bar, chiringuito or restaurant, the response is often ‘Rioja or Ribera?’ But, what of the wines of the Costa del Sol?

One might feel that this is not a wine-producing region, but, fear not, the Costa del Sol does actually produce some wonderful wines, infused with breezes blown in off the Atlantic and Western Mediterranean and born out

of the mix of both chalky and iron-rich soil of the Malaga region. And, it is available to taste.

Manilva, the small coastal town in the west of the Malaga region has the Nilva winery and bodega, focusing on recuperating the Moscatel grape traditions and has vineyards with sunny sea breezes. Wine production, hampered by urban sprawl and low market prices, has put producers out of business. With more of a ‘fair-trade’ approach, Nilva is rebuilding the local tradition of wine production in the

area. A popular destination for wine lovers, bookings for tours and tastings are quickly snapped up.

Nilva offers tours of their organic winery with tasting sessions overlooking the Mediterranean on Thursdays in English, and Saturdays in Spanish. Well worth the €25 + vat for a day out with fine wine, and spectacular views.

Reservations for a delicious sip of the wines of Manilva can be made on their website at nilva.es, by email at info@nilva.es, or via WhatsApp on 609 290 370.

Soul of GARY POOLE

BBC’s The Voice, soul singer Gary B Poole is coming to Cala Mijas to play Legends Bar on Saturday July 13.

Singer of Northern and Southern Soul, and competitor on the BBC’s ‘The Voice’ TV talent contest, Gary B Poole takes the stage at Legends, one of the Costa del Sol’s busiest and most lively music bars, situated in Cala Mijas.

With a total of four shows throughout the evening, and bringing his versions of Stax, Motown and other Soul classics, it promises to be a fantastic and funky night out. A teacher from the London Centre of Contemporary Music who specialises in Music Harmony and Vocal Technique, Gary B Poole was first signed to an indie

label when he was just 20. His first single called ‘He Won’t Love You’ never went far, but he went on work with the band D’influence who played Wembley and supported both Michael Jackson and Prince. But fame really came when he wowed TV viewers on the TV talent contest ‘The Voice’.

On the night, Gary will be joined by popular local soul divas Mama Cath and the Soul Sisters.

Seat prices start at €15, and for the first session at Legends Bar, Cala Mijas, and they will need you in your seats by 8pm sharp! To make a reservation, contact Legends Bar via their Facebook page, or by WhatsApp on 628 353 884

‘SHE POWER’

Celebrating Women’s

Resilience

at La Scala Ladies Lunch

IN a world where resilience and grace often go hand in hand, women continue to astonish with their remarkable ability to navigate life’s challenges.

As a staunch supporter of women’s rights since my early teens, I have admired their strength and tenacity. This admiration was front and centre at the latest La Scala Ladies Lunch, an event that exemplified women’s power and unity.

One exception I make to my usual workday routine is for the no-nonsense Yorkshire woman, Sarah Haley. A tough cookie with a heart of gold, Sarah is the force behind Mapuchi Moda, and her lunchtime fashion shows at La Scala have become legendary along the Costa. This week marked the summer’s final show, and it truly was the place to be. As I pondered over a few deserving women in the business arena who could benefit from a delightful lunch, I thought of La Scala, the stunning restaurant run by the most professional of hosts and our close friend Tibbi.

La Scala is the epitome of culinary excellence, where the top-notch team, Team La Scala, turns thoughts of delicious food into reality with magical precision. I knew my invitees, who had never been before, were in for a treat. Women are indeed marvellous creatures and seeing them empowered is a joy. We may wobble when faced with life’s curveballs, but we never fall. From a long-time friend recovering from major surgery to ladies, I had never met in person, a positively pink date was set. With crowns, bubbles, sparklers, chocolates, and my trademark pink glasses, we embarked on an afternoon of sheer delight.

The lunch did not disappoint. The atmosphere was charged with love and respect for womanhood. We danced, sang, celebrated, and laughed, straightening each other’s crowns in true sisterhood. There was no competition, only congratulations and mutual support. Sarah and her beautiful models added to the beauty of the afternoon, and the food was a work of art, catering to every dietary need. The rosé was perfectly chilled, and the desserts were decadently delightful.

Adding to the energy was Zac Black, whose contagious enthusiasm had everyone on their feet. The pink glasses were merely an accessory to an already perfect afternoon under the midday sun. But more than the festivities, seeing 180 women of all ages, nationalities, and cultures come together was the true highlight. It was a celebration of empowerment and sisterhood.

Congratulations to La Scala Marbella on achieving something truly wondrous. This luncheon was not just an event; it was a memory for life, a testament to the strength and unity of women. Thank you, La Scala, for creating a perfect afternoon, a beacon of empowerment and joy for all who attended.

‘La Monda Fest’, an eclectic festival, with music much closer to the sounds of the country, hybrid in style, and genuinely authentic’, according to Monda’s councillor for Culture, Ana Millán.

€16 tickets can be bought in advance through the cocheraentradas.com website, or on the day at the entrance to the festival for €20.

Unlike some of the bigger festivals on the Costa del Sol, this one has a smaller, less packed feel to it so to enjoy the music of local artists on stage shine more and so the event retains more of its genuineness.

This year, and by popular demand, the date of the festival has been brought forward to Saturday 13 July rather than the regular September date.

There will be two stages at the festival - the ‘Llano del Mercadillo’ with concerts starting at 10.30pm with a ticket, and the stage in Doctor Jiménez Encinas park which is free entry to everyone.

The concerts begin at 10.30pm.

ty has been reached. Costa Jazz Quartet, big on the Granda Jazz scene, will play a carefully selected collection of Jazz Standards, ideal for cooling down on a hot summer’s night.

Getting everyone’s feet tapping, Red Trio, a Trad Jazz, New Orlean’s style trio who will bring the sounds and joy of Mardi Gras and the founding fathers of Jazz.

QUEEN FOREVER, a tribute to the legendary and loved British band are to play Estepona August 17 as part of their We Will Rock You tour.

Looking back at the highlights of Queen’s career, including Live Aid, Montreal, Live at Wembley, Queen Forever are the mirror sound and image of Freddie Mercury and his band on stage. Formed in 2015, taking meticulous detail in their costumes, staging and musical arrangements, this by far the finest hommage to one of rock history’s most iconic bands.

Ever since Queen Forever’s first appearance on the talent show ‘Got Talent Spain’, the band has become a benchmark in the world of tribute concerts, filling concert venues up and down the country. In the words of Peter Freestone (Mercury’s Personal Assistant): “These guys have taken me back 40 years. Musically they are incredible!” If you are a Queen lover and you didn’t get to see them the first time round, Queen Forever is, without a doubt, the best option to remember

the strength and passion of the legendary British band. Simply said, the best Queen since Queen.

Obituary: Jim Paget Footsteps in our hearts...

DURING this journey called life, we sometimes meet people who will forever leave footprints in our hearts. They come into our lives and make a massive impact. Jim Paget was one of these men.

Better known as part of a dynamic couple, John Miller and Jim Paget, or simply J & J, they came onto the coast and changed the landscape of the restaurant scene. True professionals in their industry brought glamour, fine dining, and fabulous entertainment with a little splash of theatrics to the coast. Their establishments were renowned for attracting well-known celebrities; you never knew who might pop up or when. They brought down West End shows and introduced the ‘razzmatazz’ into our lives.

With their business partners, they opened many restaurants, which they later sold on, but they will always be known for Sloane’s, Daphne’s, Albert’s on the Port, and then their iconic Mijas Playa. Many of our milestones were celebrated there. Their Sunday lunches were legendary, and their Christmas parties sold out years, and I mean years, in advance. Everyone wanted to be seen at Mijas Playa.

Although they announced their retirement to Brighton some years ago, they couldn’t help but repeat their recipe for success. Even after Jim was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer, they promised to retire to Varr House in Sussex. However, they soon refurbished it into a delightful boutique hotel. They

continued with their supper clubs, themed nights, and, of course, their Sunday lunches, which became the place to be.

Unfortunately, on 4th July 2024, Jim hung up his apron for the last time, blew his last kiss, and

went peacefully to sleep. The heavens gained a twinkly star, and from everyone along the Costa del Sol, Jim, it is not goodbye, merely hasta luego and toodle-pip, old chap. Your footprints are embedded in our hearts and memories. Our thoughts are with your adored John.

Jim’s legacy is one of passion, creativity, and a relentless drive to transform and elevate every space he touched. His contributions to the culinary and entertainment worlds have left an indelible mark, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.

Jim Paget will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His footsteps in the sand have paved the way for others to follow, and his spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the incredible legacy he leaves behind.

Kindest regards and with love for John
