Zapatero spent almost 9 million on failed desalination plants

Torrevieja desalination plant

by Keith Nicol One of the first Anti-Partido Popular acts undertaken by former Prime Mininister Zapatero was to waste almost nine million euros on failed desalination plants. After José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero’s Socialist party won the elections in 2004, it cancelled a plan backed by its PP predecessor to channel water from the Ebro river in the north to help the dry south-east. Instead, the Socialists chose to invest €2bn in a string of big desalination plants along the coast. The “Water Program” promoted by the Ministry of the Environment led by Cristina Narbona, was an ambitious program to construct ten desalination plants, four of which are currently still not offering any substantial service. Among them, the desalination plant in the Poniente Almeriense was mentioned as priority, and in Alicante for L’Alancatí and Vega Baja, the expansion of the Jávea plant and the desalination in the Marina Alta. These four planned projects were never implemented during the two government terms of José Luis

Rodríguez Zapatero, as well as another desalination plant on the Costa del Sol (Malaga) and the extension of the saltwater station at Mojón (Murcia). According to the data of the Court of Auditors included in the “Report on the monitoring of direct management agreements in force between the State Water Companies and the Ministry during the years 2010-2011” involved an expenditure of almost 9 million euros of public funds. Add to this further expenses of 215 million euros for the extra costs that were fully assumed by the state-owned company Acuamed. Financed with Spanish taxpayers’ money and 55€m of European Union regional development funds, the award-winning €300m desalination plant at Torrevieja is Europe’s largest facility for converting seawater into fresh, and the second biggest in the world. However, the plant still produces only a fraction of its designed output plus the water is seen to be so expensive that nobody wants to buy it.

Respect for heroic policeman AN OFF-DUTY police officer who rescued a woman and her young child from the scene of a fatal traffic accident in Orihuela has spoken about the incident. Antonio Tenza is a National Police officer working in the immigration unit, and he was riding his motorcycle when he saw a car smash into a van on the CV-930 road. During a press conference at his station in Sangonera, he explained how he sped to the stricken car and immediately spotted a 27-year-old woman in critical condition. “Even though it was dark inside the vehicle, I could see that her arm was completely broken,” he said. After peering around in the gloom a little more, he could see that there was a child in the back of the wreckage. “I have a six-month-old baby and when I saw that child something broke inside of me,” he explained. He turned his attention to extracting the 22-month-old youngster from the car, successfully doing so as paramedics arrived at the scene, before turning attention to the injured woman. She was not breathing and Tenza was forced to revive her using CPR, but her partner, who was driving the car, died at the scene. The two occupants of the van suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Region requires language training for teachers THOUSANDS of teachers in the Valencia Region face losing their job in September for the lack of Valencian language training. The Ministry of Education is calling on all teachers to meet the linguistic requirement of having a knowledge of the language above the recognised C1 standard. Data provided by the CSIF and UGT trade unions, suggest that at least 20 per cent of the region’s teachers, more than 5,000, lack the required language training. Among these, the largest amount is concentrated in the province of Alicante. The ruling means that if qualified teachers without places currently do not have the necessary qualification they will be excluded from the job market and other teachers already with places will not have the possibility of opting for a transfer until they have the necessary Valencian qualification. Javier Mass from CSIF said teachers are “faced with the possibility of being expelled from their job, living in real anguish, despite working for many years as teachers.”

Gas explosion kills man A GAS explosion killed a resident in Santa Pola. The explosion occurred in a building in Calle Almansa with neighbours reporting the man jumped from one of the windows of the first floor apartment on to the terrace and then on to a balcony where he collapsed badly burned. Witnesses said they tried to reach him by climbing on top of a car parked underneath the terrace but with a second explosion, they were unable to get to him. The 45 year-old man died at the scene and was reported to be from Cuenca and worked in the fishing village.

Continued from front page When we talk about people we refer to our patients and their families, but how could it be otherwise, and also to our professionals, who are truly caring for our patients. Dr. José Antonio Velasco is clear that he works to improve the lives of his patients. Velasco is the Manager of the Health Department of Torrevieja , but above his work in management, he is an orthopaedic surgeon and traumatologist. “I have never considered putting aside my patients, I am convinced that we have an exemplary team that strives day by day to solve the problems of the people.” Every morning, he takes the elevator that takes him directly to the surgical block. The University Hospital of Torrevieja is a pioneering centre in technical and surgical innovation , and has prestige among the scientific community for having been a precursor, worldwide, in the implementation of interventions of maximum complexity; the arthroplasty surgery (shoulder prosthesis) by outpatient procedure is one of its landmarks.

La Mata denounces the “danger of collapse” of the Embarcadero Tower The Embarcadero Tower in on the La Mata waterfront is in danger of collapse, according to a new report. by Keith Nicol The Platform Independent Mater(PIM) has publicly questioned the condition of “one of our emblematic monuments” the La Mata Pier. The representatives of this group of neighbours of the hamlet, who have been for more than a year working on becoming a political party, explained that a few months ago “we warned the Councillor of Beaches about the cracks that had appeared in the base The Tower. The council acted with urgency; the technicians of the City Council, took photos and proceeded to make a report on the state and possible repercussions, and we were all happy, since we thought that they would act quickly. But months later, so clarified the PIM “and with some more high waves and bad weather that upset the zone again”, it has been verified that the cracks are now bigger, therefore, in the opinion of this group, the “danger of collapse is greater and that is what they want to avoid at all costs. The Pier Tower already needs a “solution”. We do not want to regret what could or could not have been.” The Tower of the Embarcadero of La Mata , next to the Torre del Moro, are the only two Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC), with the maximum range of autonomic protection, within Torrevieja. From the point of view of archaeological conservation, the remains of the jetty that extend to the sea from the tower are also of historical value, on which there has never been an attempt to recover them. Over the last few years that the tower was protected like BIC has not prevented that the place in which it is located is used like summer terrace with chairs and tables, without any municipal control.

Trial for vet accused of butchering wife A VETERINARIAN accused of murdering his wife at his Benijofar clinic has gone on trial this week. The prosecution is requesting a 15-year prison sentence for the alleged killer, who is suspected of beating his 46-year-old wife to death after the couple stayed behind after hours to attend to a sick animal. He is then accused of chopping her body into pieces, which were then stored in the boot of his car for a few days, after which he contacted the company responsible for incinerating dead animals, claiming he had a dog for them. Bizarrely, he then turned up at Almoradi’s Guardia Civil station with her ashes, saying that he had encountered his wife’s dead body at the clinic, leading him to take an overdose of medication when he failed to revive her. He recounted how he had then dismembered her corpse before cremating her, hanging a ‘closed due to illness’ sign on the clinic’s door. Prior to the trial, some reports suggested that the victim died during a botched DIY liposuction operation that she had asked her husband to carry out. The incident shocked locals, who explained how the vet had built a solid business serving foreign clients since opening in 2007. His wife was responsible for the attached pet shop and grooming service assisted by the couple’s daughter, while their son was also studying to be a vet.

National Police arrest five burglars in Madrid FIVE individuals have been arrested in Madrid known to have been involved in robberies in that city, Barcelona and Denia although it is suspected by the National Police that they may have been involved in other robberies throughout Spain. The crooks followed the same ‘modus operandi’ during each of five burglaries in their hometown of Madrid and additional robberies in the other cities, whereby they visited their targeted victims, pretending to be technicians employed by companies involved with telephones or alarm systems to allow them to obtain access to and a general idea of the systems in place. They then returned to their targeted homes or offices at a later time, breaking into the properties, forcing locks, nullifying alarm systems and using acetylene torches to open safes with their proceeds of theft well exceeding €20,000. Following identification and arrest, officers of the National Police found €2,137 euros in cash, nine mobile phones, two tablets and a laptop, six watches jewellery, skeleton keys and documents giving details of how to pick locks.

New cleaning equipment for Horadada

by Keith Nicol The company that provides the road cleaning and solid waste collection service in Pilar de la Horadada, STV Gestión, has made an investment of 3.3 million euros for the purchase of machinery to carry out its work in the municipality, As well as in the acquisition of new containers and paper mills., the City Council has extended the contract with STV Gestión for a period of 10 years, hence the investment put towards the renovation of equipment. At the presentation of these new vehicles on Monday may-

or, Ignacio Ramos, said that they were “faced with a strong commitment by the concessionaire, that after ten years working in our municipality, there have ten more to improve cleaning services. The company and the workers are doing well and I am happy that the renovation of the vehicles improves safety, quality in the environment and are quieter, as well as helping in the daily tasks,” Ramos said. The manager of the company STV Gestión, Juan Alcántara, reiterated that “the acquisition of new vehicles is due to the great commitment that has been made by the City to offer a quality service for residents”. In addition, he stressed that “it

is machinery that meets the very demanding environmental regulations and Pilar de la Horadada has today the best machinery on the market.” Among the new vehicles acquired by STV Gestión, is a sixton crane truck, for the collection of pruning and green waste matters, a double cab for other tasks such as picking up of goods, and four truck collector-compactors. Each of these has 24 cubic meters of capacity, and a fourth truck also of 20 cubic meters. “This is a very important improvement over the capacity of waste collection, since the previous trucks were smaller,”. The new equipment is due to be used immediately.

Gürtel corruption ring leaders slammed with 13-year sentences by Tahnee Wright Famously nicknamed ‘El Bigotes’ Francisco Correa, Pablo Crespo and Álvaro Pérez were handed their 13-year sentences by the High Court earlier in February for unlawfully securing event organisation contracts from the regional government of Valencia. The ruling of the court on 10th February was that all of the accused were guilty of manipulating the contracts to design, set up and take down the Valencia region pavilion at Fitur, Spain’s premier tourism fair, as well as at other lesser events. The contracts favored Gürtel businesses for five years in a row, between 2005 and 2009 and the ring misappropriated €5million of public funds.

The trial in February was the first of various to be held in connection with the investigations, with the second now underway at the National Court in Madrid. Correa and his companions will leave their cells in order to give evidence once again in knowledge that they could well see their jail terms extended considerably as a result. In order to attend the second trial, the trio were transferred to a penitentiary centre in Madrid after spending nearly a week in the prison of Picassent, the judge having ruled that they should not be allowed to walk free pending confirmation of the sentences as they presented a flight risk.

Lawyers representing both Crespo and Correa disputed this, alleging that public opinion had been allowed to influence the decision. Correa’s lawyer also explained how Correa had offered to deposit bail of €278,000 with the courts where the ban on his Swiss bank accounts to be lifted. This paled into insignificance when the courts reminded him that a fine of €3.9million has been imposed upon him. With nearly 200 official suspects, it is the largest pre-trial probe in modern Spanish history and has been broken up into sections to facilitate the investigation. The trial continues.

Flooding plan too expensive, says council

A HIDRAQUA report commissioned by Orihuela town hall within its coastal storm emergency plan suggests that it will cost at least €17 million to safeguard the municipality against future flooding events. Unfortunately, the council has admitted that it does not currently have enough money to carry out the project, which involves a 12-point action plan. The only way that the scheme can be made viable would thus be to apply for national or European funding in order to supplement the meagre municipal cash reserves. According to the plan, the major issues include modernising the town’s drainage system rather than relying on natural streams and rivers, plus poor planning which has led to buildings being erected on top of natural drainage channels causing water to build up when it rains heavily. Recommendations include investment in new, large-bore drainage pipes in order to transport water to the sea. In addition to the financial issues, there will also be a need to liaise with nearby towns such as Torrevieja in order to achieve the desired results, says the plan.

The three men could well see their jail terms extended in further trials

Alicante’s poor benefit from food donation THE European Union has donated two million kilos of food to the Food Bank and Red Cross for distribution to some 200 associations in the Alicante area which will allow for free food to be distributed to up to 55,000 people during March and April. As the economy continues to improve slightly, the number of people who need help is dropping but there are still plenty who need assistance and as the food is distributed, so reports will be made to the EU outlining the social needs of each recipient. Many of the possible recipients have been unable to pay their gas and electricity bills and therefore have been unable to cook a number of items but this distribution includes a number of different cooked vegetables such as beans and chickpeas in cans which will help to improve dietary intake, A shipment of frozen rabbit has also been received and at the moment, Juan Vicente Peral the director of the Food Bank of Alicante is consulting all of its associated food banks to see if they can store the rabbit before distribution to those who can cook meals. This consignment of food is the last one from the 2016 campaign which has seen around five million kilos of food given to those in need and in this distribution, the variety of products has been extended to greater cover the nutritional needs of children. The programme is co-financed 85 per cent by the European Fund for the Most Disadvantaged and 15 per cent from the Spanish national budget.

Spain’s Eurovision star for 2017 Song selection scandal. by Tahnee Wright This year’s Eurovision Song Contest is not taking place until May but is already causing controversy here in Spain. ‘Do It For Your Lover’ by Manel Navarro was selected as the Spanish Eurovision entry as the national final took place at the VAV studios in Leganés in February. 20 year-old Navarro tied with popular choice Mirela who sang in Spanish as opposed to Navarro who sang in English. Three celebrity judges announced their points before the public vote was added to provide the result. Two of the judges put Navarro first and hot favourite Mirela last, while the third judge placed Mirela first and Navarro third. Loud booing and complaining could be heard from the audience throughout the broadcast as it was announced that the Spanish public had placed Mirela first and Navarro third, repealing the deficit and resulting in a tie on 58 points each. Given the tie result, judges cast a vote to decide which act would win and go forward as Spain’s Eurovision entry with Navarro coming out on top. An abundant number of audience members walked out be-

Manel Navarro at the national final

fore Navarro could reprise his song. He was noticeably shaken by the backlash, gesturing to the crowd before apologising after the show. As if the disappointment from the Spanish public was not enough, the result has caused further drama after an apparent friendship on Twitter between judges Xavi Martinez and Navarro emerged. Xavi had given his maximum 12 points to Navarro and put Mirela in last place, enough to prevent Mirela from victory.

While The Corporación de Radio y Televisión Española (RTVE) stand by the decision, stating that rules were clear before the show, following widespread public backlash across Spain, Deputy for Toledo, Jose Miguel Camacho is now insisting on an inquiry. Could Spain be forced to reverse the result? Eurovision 2017 will take place in the International Exhibition Centre in Kiev,Ukraine, following Ukraine's victory at the 2016 contest in Stockholm.

More money for tourism promotion THE Costa Blanca Board of Trustees and the Diputacion of Alicante has increased the money available to help promote tourism and assist municipalities and associations in the province of Alicante. The 2017 tourism aid budget has been increased by a whopping 58 per cent and now totals almost €1 million with grants available to recognised parties for plans and initiatives that aim to promote the area and help position it as a worldwide destination. The President of the Diputacion de Alicante and the Costa Blanca Patronage, Cesar Sanchez, and the vice-president and deputy of Tourism Promotion, Eduardo Dolon, announced details of this aid before a packed audience of more than 200 people, including mayors, councillors and representatives of the province's tourism sector at the MARQ Archaeological Museum of Alicante. Sanchez stressed that the provincial government hopes to reach all municipalities, especially those with smaller populations, in order to collaborate with them to improve and assist them to promote their tourism opportunities. He also pointed out that they want to help promote local festivals: “Many of the celebrations that happen in our area are carried out outside the high season, so we are aware of the importance of working to promote these types of events that allow us to keep the arrival of tourists throughout the year and consequently, to retain jobs” he said. The budget has been increased so dramatically this year because applications last year exceeded all expectations with 129 municipalities and 160 nonprofit entities presenting realistic projects and applying for aid for tourism, a major source of income and employment for the area.

Cala Mosca development resisted THERE will be a protest held on Sunday March 5 to oppose the existing plans for the development of Cala Mosca on the Orihuela Costa. by Keith Nicol This planned peaceful demonstration has been formally recognised and will start at 11.30am from the Esplanade of Playa Flamenca beside the Post Office. Local associations, including the Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa and members of Podemos will join supporters of pressure groups CLARO and Cambiemos to walk along the coast in what may be a final attempt to persuade the authorities that this project should not be approved. The developer involved wants to build 1,500 new houses and apartments on what is said to be the last kilometre of open, green land on the Orihuela Costa and is in the process of trying to get final approval from the Valencia government for the project. Approval has previously been delayed due to the intervention of CLARO and the support of the European Parliament some years ago, when the developer was obliged to delay building in order to carry out an environmental impact study. A revised project was submitted for public consultation in

2014 which undertook to safeguard two endangered species, a plant and a rare snail, which are protected under regional and European environmental law. This proposal however also met with major objections and yet another revised proposal was presented at the end of 2016 but this also received major objections because it contained no significant changes, continued to require the building for 1,500 new properties and still did not satisfactorily explain how the build would protect the two endangered species. There are also objections to the ability of the local services to deal with the influx of a large additional population in the event that the construction was to be allowed.

Wolverine gets sendoff with Logan Tonight, Friday March 3rd, Logan hits the big screen in Torrevieja. Logan is a 2017 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Wolverine, played for the final time by Hugh Jackman. The film is the tenth instalment in the X-Men film series, as well as the third and final Wolverine film following X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and The Wolverine (2013). The film also stars Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant and Dafne Keen. Logan premiered at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival on February 17, 2017, and is scheduled to be released on March 3, 2017, in the United States and here in Spain. In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan's attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces. The film carries an 'R' certificate. Logan is being shown at IMF Cinema in the Ozone centre every night in English V.O.S.E, at 6pm in Sala 5.

The developer considers that he has now done enough to satisfy the requirements of environmental law and hopes that the regional government of Valencia will ignore the combined protestations of Orihuela Costa residents and now approve the plans. CLARO’S Bob Houliston and Marta Guillen of Cambiemos will continue to fight the plan and will lobby the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament in Brussels to become involved again and will take all legal actions possible to ensure that this last remaining piece of green land with endangered species is not sacrificed to another mega building project.

Mount Etna erupts for the first time this year Europe’s most active volcano sends a tower of bright lava into the sky. by Tahnee Wright Mount Etna, on the Italian island of Sicily, is the largest active volcano in Europe and although one of the world's most frequently erupting volcanoes, it has been largely dormant for the past two years. The minor eruption took place on Tuesday but soon subdued. The authorities have reported no danger to the nearby towns and there has been no disruption to air traffic. Other minor eruptions occurred in 2016 and 2015 and in 2014, it burst into a spectacular nighttime display. The last major eruption was in 1992 Mount Etna has the longest record of continuous eruption in the world and also made an appearance in ‘Star Wars’ movie, Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. The volcano often comes to life in short, violent bursts called paroxysms. Its outbursts produce enough lava each year to fill Chicago's Willis Tower (the former Sears Tower), a 2012 study found. Located near the east coast of the island of Sicily, Mount Etna is 10,900 feet (3,329 meters) tall with a base circumference of about 93 miles (150 kilometers). Mount Etna is a series of nested stratovolcanoes with four distinct summit craters. There are two central craters, called Bocca Nuova and Voragine; the Northeast crater; and the newest Southeast crater, which was formed by an eruption in 1978. Strombolian eruptions, which produce ash, tephra and lava fountains, are fairly common in these craters. The eruptions of early 2013 were mostly strombolian eruptions. The January 2013 eruption was from Bocca Nuova, and the February eruptions are most noticeable from the Southeast crater. The normal view of Mount Etna

The eruption on Tuesday was minor, the last major eruption was in 1992

Beware of the processionary caterpillars by Andy Mansell MOST OF us look forward to early Spring in anticipation of warmer days, shorter nights and nature bursting into life after the cooler winter months. For dog owners the better weather offers plenty of opportunity for long walks in the countryside. Unfortunately a particular menace lies in wait for unsuspecting and curious dogs in the form of the deadly Pine Processionary Caterpillar, which can inflict serious or in some cases fatal injury if merely sniffed or licked by the animal. The pests are also known as Marching Caterpillars, because of the way they move along the ground in head to tail linear movements. They are responsible for much of the deforestation of pine forest in Southern Europe and lay their eggs high up in the trees and occasionally at lower levels. Look up into pine trees at this time of year and you are likely to see one of the distinctive nests hanging in what appears to be an almost see through gauze. These can contain literally dozens of eggs. Once the caterpillars hatch and fall to the ground, they move in a procession across paths and roads following a pherenome trail produced by the insect ahead of them. To protect themselves they grow se-

verely irritative harpoon like hairs. A dogs natural instinct is to lick or sniff anything it comes into contact with. However, just a tiny amount of contact with these caterpillar hairs can induce a severe allergic reaction, causing swelling of the tongue and nasal passages, often leading to deadly breathing difficulties. Dog owners need to be extra vigilant for the next few weeks as the caterpillars have already begun to drop from their nests and are marching around the undergrowth and footpaths. Should your pet be unlucky enough to come into contact with these nasty insects, get them to the nearest vet as quickly as possible, The vet will administer a cortizone injection and pills to calm the reaction. In some cases part of the swollen infected tongue will have to be removed to help with normal breathing. It is also advisable for humans to avoid any contact with the caterpillars as we too can develop a nasty skin reaction to the hairs. This can be particularly painful for children, who may try and touch the funny little creatures without being aware of the consequences.

U3A's New President

Above: U3A President Rosemary Rickman and Ambassador Bob Hill

At the AGM of Torrevieja's U3A on Monday, Rosemary Rickman took over the mantle of president of Torrevieja's largest International club from out going president Peter Cameron. U3A Ambassador and former President Bob Hill also entertained the 300 plus attendees with a short talk about the history of the Torrevieja branch and of the ground routes of the world wide organisation. Although the Torrevieja branch, with its almost one-thousand members is the largest in Spain, there are around 15 other clubs all focusing on helping expand the quality of life for those who have the left the world of employment and kids behind them and are enjoying life in the Spanish sunshine. If you are interested in joining Torrevieja U3A, and you would be very welcome, why not attend one of their monthly general meetings as a visitor, where you will be greeted and introduced to the Association. Their monthly meetings are held at The CMO Building on the road behind the Carrefour Super Store, Torrevieja and usually held on the last Monday of the month. Unless otherwise announced on their website Home page, meetings begin at 11:00am with access available from 10am. Also 'retiring' was Treasurer Rolf Buerger, who has been keeping count of the annual 5.00€ subscriptions and all the fundraising activities over the past seven years. Each year U3A chooses a particular charity to support and in 2016 raised €1,723.65 for AFA Alzheimers Torrevieja and the previous year presented ALPE with cash and goods to the value of €2,050. One of the main attractions for many members are the variety and number of different interest groups run by volunteers within the association. Online, a weekly schedule is available to help you plan your activities for each month. More information available at: www.torreviejau3a.org.

Through pink tinted specs Barry Duke's view of the Spanish Costas by

Barry Duke

There are some pretty crazy myths about Benidorm. My favourite is that the resort’s “Bird Island” appeared when a chunk of the mountain range called Puig Campana – a backdrop to the city – was kicked into the sea by a giant called Roldan who lost his cool when his daughter married a man he disapproved of. But some of the true facts about Benidorm – one of Spain’s most important tourist destinations that attracts around five million holidaymakers every year – are far stranger than the bunkum. One concerns the efforts of Pedro Zaragoza Orts – the man credited with Benidorm’s creation – to get once strongly Catholic Spain to accept the bikini. Zaragoza, Benidorm’s mayor for 17 years who died in 2008 aged 85, had seen pictures of the two-piece swimming costumes in magazines. He liked what he saw, and knew that – in northern Europe – they had become enormously popular. But in Spain the skimpy beachwear horrified the Church, and was banned by the Franco regime. In 1953 – on the principle that “you simply couldn’t stop it” – Zaragoza allowed bikinis in Benidorm. No one in the country had attempted this before, and there was outrage. As members of the Civil Guard scuffled with scantily-clad girls on Benidorm’s beaches, the local archbishop threatened to excommunicate Zaragoza, who then decided to appeal directly to the dictator Franco. At 6am one morning he reportedly set off for Madrid on his Vespa motor scooter, arriving in the Spanish capital eight hours later. “I changed my shirt but I went in to the General with my trousers spattered with motor oil,” he later claimed. “He backed me, and the bikini stayed”. If bikinis put a frown on the faces of diehard religious traditionalists, imagine their fury when Benidorm actively began promoting itself as a gay “Mecca” – today the city’s gay scene is on par with many of much longer-established world resorts. Regular visitors – and I was one until I settled here more than six years ago – all agree that it’s friendlier and

less expensive than, say, Sitges, Gran Canaria, Mykonos or Brighton. It is home to a brilliant network of gay bars and clubs, literally situated minutes from each other in the picturesque Old Town, which is also crammed with a variety of restaurants offering cuisines ranging from traditional Spanish to Indian, Chinese and Thai. Another myth about Benidorm: the city has to import sand from Morocco to maintain its fabulous golden beaches. This “fact” apparently originated when a tour rep told this to a coachload of tourists heading from Alicante airport to their hotel in Benidorm in the early 70s. His comment passed into media history, and many still believe it is true. The truth is that the resort’s seven kilometres of silky soft sand are absolutely natural, and the city is actually an exporter that supplies high-grade sand to a number of nearby resorts. When a stand means not standing The term football stand probably dates into a way back era when spectators actually stood to watch a football game. by Keith Nicol Now thanks to the concerted efforts of the CD Montesinos supporters club, The Full Monte, the new Stand is almost completed at the Municipal ground. According to the club's website the work continues at the Campo municipal in Los Montesinos, otherwise known as “The Cauldron. The town council recently announced that work was due to start updating the facilities at the football ground including both changing rooms, the picnic area just to the right as you enter the ground, the toilet block, create wheel chair access to all areas of the ground, including the stand area, and to put a new roof on one of the storage rooms. which has been without a roof and therefore un-useable for years. But what has most of the supporters excited about is the building of a complete new stand at the ground. The new stand is sited behind the dug-outs and has four tiers of seating. An area 40 meters wide was cleared for the construction in that space and is in the process of being adapted to fit the stand. Work is expected to be concluded soon, before the end of the season along with the other improvements to the ground. The improvements all came about after continued meet-

ings that the Full Monte have been holding over the past 18 months or so between representatives of the Club, the town hall; which have involved both the Mayor and the Sports Councillor who have been true to their word in getting the

corresponding finance needed to fund this exciting project and the Valencian Football Federation, who are funding the project. More news will follow about when the Stand will be finished and special announcements will be made.

Sex in the gritty

by

Michael Walsh

keyboardcosmetics@ gmail.com

WE ARE all familiar with the terms, slap an’ tickle, hanky-panky or a little bit of how’s your father. Such colourful expressions amusingly suggest that we are more comfortable with alternatives to the taboo three-letter word. There is much eccentricity about the British approach to human congress. Yet, amorous activity between humans is as essential to life as is eating, breathing, drinking beer and sleeping. But, we smile as we recall the name of the theatre production, ‘No Sex Please, We’re British’. Maybe the stork did deliver us. Unable to recall the event, I have to trust those who tell me when my 0 birthday party was held. I was hungry at the time and had other things on my mind. Strangely enough the same attractions still appeal and have held my attention ever since. As a ghost-writer it occurs to me that romantic novels and movies have lost the plot. On the one hand there is the Mills and Boon

type of romance. Apart from a little heavy breathing, whispered endearments and the tearing sound of a bodice, the rest is left to the imagination. Then, from the sublime to the ridiculous, the alternative is animalistic artificial couplings. These fantasy encounters are salaciously narrated in a way that would make a trooper blush. There is an elephant in the room and we seem to be blind to it. As a professional writer of other people’s books I am convinced that fantasy or real life amorous activities can and should be beautifully and romantically portrayed without the necessity of sordid titillation. One’s choice of novel doesn’t have to be maiden aunt or tasteless depravity. Amorous encounters can be written, read and enjoyed in such a way as to arouse empathy. The act of lovemaking then becomes what it should be; the fulfilment of a romantic relationship in ways that we actually yearn for, identify with and are actually achievable. This is what is missing and we can be certain that novelists and biographers, skilful and imaginative enough to reset romance will discover a profitable market.

Victors Vision

My word Victor, you certainly don’t look your age Yes. I know I should be flattered when getting a remark like that from someone I’m meeting for the first time. Well, just between you and me – I am. But it does get a bit irritating and embarrassing, and just occasionally I become all coy and gawky. The fact is my age is no secret. And why should it be? Most of my friends know that I am in my eighth decade, and have not noticed any great difference from a good few years ago, except that I get tetchy more times than I should! However, it all depends on how you cope with the ageing process when you get there. If you think old then old will take over. I mention all this because age seems to have become a hot topic over the years, not only in the UK but also here in Spain. The prejudice that has existed for so long has given way to a greater understanding that as soon as you reach retirement age you are not ready for the garbage bin. Of course age prejudice is no problem for the angels of HELP, that wonderful organization set up more than thirty years ago by Jill Porter Smith and her husband to assist expat patients at local hospitals who were unable to speak Spanish. But over the years HELP has become more than just a vehicle for language assistance. It consists of a group of compassionate people, some of them of ‘advanced age’, all of whom are dedicated to making the lives of expat patients more comfortable and less anxious. For instance, take Carol Valente.

Although born in England, Carol went to school in Switzerland and then went to live with a Spanish family in Madrid where she learnt to speak fluent Spanish. Some years and a couple of husbands later she came to live in Denia where she joined HELP. Over the years Carol has not only embraced her translator skills with vigour and determination but she has also given comfort to those who were unaware that they were dying. Carol Valente is now 83 years old. Most days you will find her striding energetically along the corridors at La Marina Hospital at Denia meeting expat patients and taking them off to keep their Consultant appointments. You probably wouldn’t even notice her, a slight diminutive figure wearing quite ordinary clothes but with a pleasant smile that would reassure any doubting soul. At the age of 83 Carol Valente has as much energy and stamina as someone half her age. But she is also no man’s fool. I remember a time when I failed to turn up for an appointment and that sweet welcoming voice turned into a block of stone: ‘You should have let me know,’ she said, scolding me like a school matron. ‘This is a hospital and we all have to stick to time.’ The look I got convinced me not to be so negligent in the future!

Carol Valente is what the difference between young and old is all about. Aches and pains maybe, but the brain is as active as ever and anyone who underestimates its potency, its potential, is making a grave error. However, age must be treated with as much respect by the old themselves as by the young. In my range of vision retirement is a dirty word. In fact, whoever coined the phrase, ‘Old age isn’t for cissies,’ got it just about right.

Stuart Spencer wins Half Marathon

Stuart Spencer won the 34th Edition of the Half Marathon "City of Torrevieja" on Sunday in a time of 1 hour: 09 minutes. He was followed in second place by Noe Romero and Jesús Vidal. Hanza Chetoui won the 10 kilometre race. The first woman home was Marthe Katrine Myhre. by Keith Nicol On Sunday morning at 10am more than a thousand runners readied themselves for the off for the 21 kilometre and 10 kilometre races. The participating runners came mainly from the province of Alicante and Murcia but the races also had an international character to them. As in the previous years, many of the participants are not there to better their times or try and beat other runners to the finish line, but to challenge themselves and many, fundraising for charity. The race created a good atmosphere around the city centre and along the coastal route, with hundreds of spectators sanding on route and cheering them along. The run was also tinged with humour with many runners wearing carnival costumes, pushing prams, wheels chairs, in-line skating and even 'walking the dog'. Stuart Spencer's winning time of 1:09, was far from the record that was set back in 2003 by Óscar Fernández, with one hour, two minutes and twenty-one seconds. The race started and finished on the promenade of Juan Aparicio, next to the Monument to the Man of the Sea. The prizes were presented by the mayor Jose Manuel Dolón and the Councillor for Sports, Víctor Ferrández.

Dangerous zebra

I walk my children every day to school. At the top of the main road in our town there is a bus stop. In front of the bus stop there is a zebra crossing, which I have to cross with my young children to get to school. There are no traffic lights. Where the zebra crossing is situated and the top of the main road which leads to a roundabout with signs for two different towns. The traffic is horrendous and cars do not stop at the crossing because they are not looking, they are only looking at the town signs for where they want to go. How do I get in touch with the local town hall or council about sorting out a pelican traffic light there? I live very close to the crossing and have seen and heard many accidents that have happened there. I am worried for the safety of myself and my children when we cross the road. Susan in Teulada.

“I have the hump with these roads

I suffer with a bad back and visit the Chiropactist at least once a week for treatment. My argument is the humps in the road, do they have to be so steep? They really make my back jolt and I suffer if they appear unexpected. Even if my husband drives over them very slowly I still feel pain. Why do they have to be so big and steep? Jill Moraira.

Overtaking Cyclists? I travel to and from Moraira to Calpe every day along the coast road. My friend told me when she overtook a group of cyclists they pulled out on her. Causing her to nearly have an accident. Are they meant to be cycling in a single line because every time I drive behind them they are cycling next to one another. There will be a fatality at some point. But which one has the right of way, the cyclist or the driver? What are the rules about overtaking cyclists? Becky in Moraira.

Monte Carlo or Bust by

Colin Bird

It’s a world of the have’s and have not’s, but if you want a real sight of the former, get yourself over to Monaco. Until we disembarked the luxurious Queen Victoria, we had felt pampered and special, but once ashore we were like Victorian ragamuffins with our noses pressed up against the toy shop window. Two super cruisers were moored near to us and Mr Google informed us they had cost $120 million and $150 million to build and were owned by Russians. I express no opinion on Russian oligarchs and how they might have made their billions. The last thing I need is a knock on the door at three in the morning and being confronted by seven foot Yetis with muscles in their spit. But these gin palaces are small fry compared to some of the stuff that floats into Monte Carlo, we were told. Super duper expensive cars are everywhere and plonking ourselves in a smart cafe in the Place du Casino, we were given a continuous display of mouth watering automobiles in a meandering stream as they traversed the square. True, there was the occasional Renault or Volkswagen (peasants) but they were always sandwiched by yet another McLaren, Bentley or Lamborghini. Monte Carlo has more Rolls than a Sainsbury’s cafeteria. We settled the €90 bill for our six beers and having applied CPR to our friend Adrian and his ravaged wallet, we decided to enter the hallowed halls of the casino. Except me. I was dispatched to the nearby Hotel de Paris to enquire about room rates. Just for a laugh they said. So, adjusting my slightly scuffed plastic rain jacket, and pleased that my Primark chinos were clean on that day, I entered the Foyer that resembled a Liberace wet dream. “May I help you sir?” enquired Al Pacino as he and three extras from Godfather VII closed in on me. “Just came in to get a brochure”, I stammered. “I am sorry sir, but only registered guests at the Casino are permitted to stay here”. How did he know that I was not a high roller? Taking another step towards me as if to emphasis the point that I should leave, I caught a whiff of his exclusive after shave, probably ‘Macho Platinum’ by Chanel. And as I slunk away, I left him with a whiff of mine: ‘Abject Humiliation’ by The Pound Shop.

Spanish Property Ownership by

Mark Roach

Company Director and Spanish Tax Consultant

What BREXIT could mean for property owners in Spain The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union has raised important questions in regards to how such a move will affect British buyers of property in Spain or current Spanish property owners. As a member of the Association of International Property Professionals, Wincham is made up of qualified Lawyers, Tax Consultants, Accountants, Gestores (qualified Legal Assistants) and Economists. Using the skills and experience of its staff, Wincham is monitoring the situation very closely and will continue to be at the forefront of events as they develop, offering support and expert advice to new and existing clients. Spanish inflation rate at more than 4-year high Well above the ECB target of just below 2 percent The Spanish inflation rate rocketed to 3 percent year-on-year in February, up from 2.9 percent in January and the fastest growth rate since December 2012. The rate was lower than the expected 3.2 percent by analysts in a Reuters poll but has nevertheless fuelled criticism in Germany of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) quantitative easing programme, which is aimed at taking price growth back to the central bank’s goal of just below 2 percent. Surging prices across the euro zone have caused debate over the ECB’s next move and whether it will scale back its monetary policy stance now, given that an economic recovery across the bloc also appears to be picking up steam. Inflation rate is based upon the consumer price index (CPI) and in Spain, the most

important categories in the consumer price index are food and non-alcoholic beverages (20 percent of the total weight), transport (15 percent), housing and utilities (13 percent) and hotels, cafés and restaurants (12 percent). The index also includes: Recreation and culture (9 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (7 percent); and clothing and footwear (7 percent). Furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; health; communications; alcoholic beverages and tobacco; and education account for the remaining 18 percent of total weight. Inflation rate in Spain averaged 6.84 percent from 1955 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 28.43 percent in August of 1977 and a record low of -1.37 percent in July of 2009. Preliminary inflation readings for Germany are due on March 1, while data European Central for the euro zone as a whole will be Bank in Frankfurt, Germany released on March 2.

Working people die before qualifying for state pension Pension age to rise to 70.5 years? MPs in the UK have warned that further increases to the state pension age could mean many working people die before qualifying for it. In The Commons work and pensions select committee report on intergenerational fairness, published on Tuesday, it was claimed that financing the current “triple lock” guarantee on pensions in the future will not be possible without increasing the state pension age to 70.5 years. Making the triple lock sustainable would mean pushing the state pension age over average life expectancy in poorer areas of the UK. It would leave men in London, Blackpool, Bradford and Manchester dying on average before they receive their state pension. Current male life expectancy is lowest in Blackpool, at 67.5, while it is 68.7 in parts of Bradford and 70.2 in much of Manchester. Tower Hamlets in London’s East End has a male life expectancy of 69.1.

The committee, citing figures from the Institute of Fiscal Studies recommended that the triple lock be replaced from 2020 by a smoothed earnings link. This would benchmark the state pension to a fixed proportion of average earnings whilst also protecting its purchasing power in times of inflation. Ministers have rejected suggestions that the triple lock be replaced. A government spokesperson said: “The government wants to ensure economic security for people at every stage of their life, including retirement. The triple lock has protected the incomes of millions of pensioners and we are committed to it for the duration of this parliament.” Retirees who have an occupational pension, own their own home and may also still be earning (gains from property etc.) are £20 a week better off than working households on average –according to research published last week by the Resolution Foundation.

Men in London, Blackpool, Bradford and Manchester are less likely to receive their state pension.

It’s electrifying! The cost of electricity varies hugely from country to country and further differences can be seen between localities within any particular country. There are many factors that account for these price differences. The cost of power generation depends on local weather patterns, government and industry regulation, government subsidies and of course, largely on the type and market price of the fuel used. In the European Commission’s third Quarterly Report of 2016 on European electricity markets, the EU average household electricity price (inclusive of taxes) was 20.90 c€/kWh. The report was taken across 28 countries and shows Spanish electricity costing above average and more than that of its neighbouring countries at 21.35 c€/kWh whilst residents in the UK pay 19.47 c€/kWh and those in France enjoy 16.90 c€/kWh. If you’re a business owner, you would also pay less for electricity to run your shop, office or warehouse in France, with the Commission’s report on industrial consumers electricity prices (without VAT and non-recoverable taxes) showing average prices of 9.99 c€/kWh in France in comparison to 13.74 c€/kWh in England and 10.20 c€/kWh in Spain. The EU average for industrial consumers being 11.80 c€/kWh. There are an array of price-comparison sites allowing you to keep check that you’re receiving the best rates for your electricity along with other utilities – gas, water etc. Gas and electricity market reports along with the third Quarterly Report can be found on the European Commission’s website here - https:// ec.europa.eu/energy/en/data-analysis/market-analysis.

Can I refuse to accept an inheritance? If so, who would inherit my part? A Yes‌Depending on the last Will and Testament and the applicable law of the inheritance, the property and assets could be distributed among the other heirs or they could be divided among the children of the person who renounces the inheritance. They, like the person who renounced the inheritance, are also entitled to reject it.

When and where should I renounce the right to inherit? A In Spain you can do so in front of the Public Notary.

Are there other cases where you may lose an inheritance? A There are cases that an inheritance is difficult to deal with as a result of the debts of one of the co-heirs, since the creditors will make things more difficult for all the beneficiaries. If there were many debts, you might not be able to inherit anything.

You also may lose your inheritance if the deceased Will was improperly drawn up or the Will was not clearly in your favour.

How I can avoid these problems in the future for my heirs? A ALWAYS seek legal advice before making your last Will and Testament (Spanish will or international Will), In addition, it is advisable to do a study to minimize inheritance taxes payable by the heirs (implication of residency of people involved). Your lawyer can help you with all these steps to protect the future of your loved ones.

The Sound of Music This week, fellow Brit, Ed Sheeran is still dominating the UK Charts. His album “X” currently sits at number 4, more incredibly, the singles charts are something else to behold! Ed, has 3 singles in the top 5, “Shape Of You”, “Castle On The Hill” and “How Would You Feel” and next week these same tracks are going to be released as remix versions, which will surely secure his chart domination for the foreseeable future! Good on you Ed!

It’s all about the girls this year! Female artists having been cashing in their chips and taking home some truly unbelievable pay packages during 2016, according to recent figures published. Here are a few sickly salaries that will make your eyes water! Rihanna - $75 million - Her album "Anti" was another No. 1 hit, and she boasts endorsement deals with Dior, Puma and Samsung. Madonna - $76.5 million - The Material Girl's Rebel Heart tour grossed more than $170 million; she also has successful clothing and perfume lines. Adele - $80.5 million - In addition to sell-out arena concert performances, the British singer sold a record 3 millionplus copies of her album "25" in its first week of release last November.

My favourite moment of the month has to be the Super Bowl 51 Halftime Show, and it seems I am not the only one to have been blown away. Garnered as the most watch musical event on earth, this year’s extravaganza did NOT disappoint! Global superstar Lady Gaga took to the humungous stage in Housten’s NRG Stadium on the 5th of this month, and what a show. An unbeatable aerial display, killer dance routines combined with her signature vocals certainly cemented Gaga as the Queen of the concert. The show received 117.5 million viewers upon its initial broadcast, and over 150 million viewers across all platforms, making it the most viewed musical event in history according to NFL. P.S. Commercials costs peaked this year at a cost of $5 million for a 30 second broadcast!

Epic movie: Check it out this week, The Great Wall. Starring Matt Damon.

Next week will be all about the Oscar’s. The event was only held this Sunday, so I will have the Nominees, winners and drama for you guys in the next edition!

Cartagena's Ninth Night of the Museums programme is launched

by Keith Nicol One of the most interesting, educational and fun events that takes place annually in Cartagena is their Night of the Museums. It's planned to coincide with the worldwide event that takes place each May and in Cartagena it grows in stature and substance each and every year. This year's event is dedicated to the Year of Enlightenment, with the poster to publicise the event being presented on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, while on April 27 the full program of events will be announced. This week, the mayor of Cartagena, José López, accompanied by the councilman of the Culture and Heritage, Ricardo Segado, held a coordination meeting for the ninth edition of the Night of Museums, attended by munici-

pal technicians, directors of the participating museums, responsible for the museum spaces, tourist centers and entities that collaborate in this cultural proposal. Among the main agreements reached during the meeting is that on 17 March the presentation of the poster, the new routes and the new image of the web: www.nochemuseoscartagena.es, will take place. On the same day they will open the registration period to participate as a volunteer. During the meeting, José López and Ricardo Segado presented an assessment of the last edition of the Museum Night, calling it "very positive". Last year around 85,000 people visited the different museums and museum spaces and enjoyed the more than one hundred and fifty

events scheduled on the night of May 21, 2016, highlighting the figures in the Naval Museum (9,826 visits) or in the Museum of the Roman Theater (6,450 visits). The Night of Museums, offers the opportunity to thousands of people to enjoy the evening and entre all the museums completely free of charge. With more than thirty museums and museum spaces ranging from the Roman Theatre, to the chapels of the cofradías of Holy Week or the Glass Museum of Santa Lucía, all are offering free entry. In addition, there will be, among other activities, performances, exhibitions and concerts, which will complete the wide cultural and artistic offer that will flood the streets of Cartagena throughout the day.

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 10 represents Q and 13 represents Z, so fill in Q every time the figure 10 appears and Z every time the figure 13 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

Kenny, People have been telling me about the New World Order. Can you explain what this is because I am finding it hard to accept the reality of it! Carmen A. Hi Carmen. The New World Order can be seen in many ways. It is in effect a need to Globalise the World and to establish a Government that is responsible for the administration of it. Though this may have a sinister repercussion it is important to say that if such an action improves the life we all lead then it will iron out all the poverty and misery, and offer enhanced facilities that the entire World can benefit from directly. There are those who feel that such a globalisation may be detrimental to those very people who are at risk, as the World cannot, or will not, be able to support such a burgeoning population, with a negative result ensuing.

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

Be sure that you are that voice to be heard; and fully accept that time for you, right now, is just an illusion. With all the will in the World there is only so much you can take in, but if anyone can do a lot with a little...then that is you, for sure!

Look to your opposing sign of Libra this week because it really is a time when the scales have to balance and you must maintain equilibrium, even if others seem to be losing theirs! Midweek the Sun sextiles Pluto and this will see the truth being widely known; and some apology due to you. Unfortunately for some, you were right all along this time.

It is very hard for your pride to accept that you could be at fault this time around. Accept that things were meant to be and remove any blame which will enable you to see what lies beneath, and deduce what is important or not. Believe in your inherent abilities to predict, and accelerate to the real source of the problem to enable a quicker and better solution.

Jupiter brushes up to Mercury and this trasnsmutes distinctly positive possibilities, though it could be perceived as sugaring the pill somewhat. Whilst you take on the true meaning of life and its eventualities, you are using your psychic energies to predict, with protection in mind. There may very well be some tears before bedtime!

It is all change and change around this week as your schedule widens to cope with a drastic situation; but one which allows you to show others just how far you have gone and what you are now prepared to do. Taking control means just what it says, and you are in fine form to see things through to the satisfactory completion that you had in mind.

Your mutable and sometimes negative views are a result of your deep concern and your dedication and determination. However ther are time such as now when others misinterpret what you are saying, and maybe deliberately! Mercury conjuncts with Neptune, planetary leader of your opposing sign of Pisces, to bring closure.

Hard work should bring good results, but it doesn’t have to be your total focus right now. This would be a good time to reward friends with hospitality, especially since you have been neglecting them as of late. Letting down your hair and getting down to basics would be a smart move. Mars trines Saturn at the start of a busy week, so make time!

Somebody surely has their wires crossed this week and what is needed is clear communication right now. All this could be blamed on the poignant sextile between Pluto and Mercury later this week. Though it may seem to be slow progress, much good comes from conservation and determination in a situation where ignorance now is no bliss.

Lighten up about something! You are losing sleep and seem to have just one focus at present, whereas a satisfactory solution is in the hands of others right now. Fear travels the body in the nervous system and so, taking time to look within and calming yourself is on the cards. The Sun sextiles with Pluto which allows for deep calm and resolve.

You are not going back on a promise, but you are wiser to someone who seems to be being manipulative and controlling. Beware of just what is behind a simple request! Jupiter opposes your planetary leader, Uranus, and this is not a matter of the reversal of fortune, but it is time for the rightful settling, at last, of an ongoing financial matter.

Moon magic may just come to your rescue this week as you are faced with a decision that really nobody should have to make. You seem to be empowered and have gone beyond anger, which allows you to see things from both sides! You are learning from all this, but remember as a Water sign you are instinctive, as you go with the flow!

Bite your tongue just a little longer, because it will be well worth it. Allow others to entangle themselves even more and then they will be calling for you to help. Allbeit that this is a difficult situation and that you are feeling prickly, somebody isn’t cutting the mustard, but will learn the hard way, and that isn’t your fault; wait and see and be prepared!

Neptune is ebullient and fixed, with Mercury calling the shots at the very start of the week. Aspects of communication are your contact with the World, and clearing to send a positive message is done this week with a knowledge that this time at least you will be heard! Now be sure of exactly the message that you know you have to send!

The twice weekly sessions helped to reduce the pain endured by those with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, whilst also boosting energy levels and making it easier to carry out everyday tasks. Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear of cartilage, making joints painful and causing difficulties for suffers to bend, lift and grip. Rheumatoid arthritis is linked to the immune system attacking the joints making them painful and swollen. There are no cures for either. All participants in the study had either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Half of them did two yoga classes a week plus a practice session at home, whilst the other half continued life as normal. After two months, the yoga participants reported around a 20 per cent improvement in pain relief, increased energy levels and better mood and physical function. Anyone with arthritis intending to start yoga should always consult their doctor before their first session. There are a number of well qualified yoga instructors in our area who will help you choose the most suitable classes for your current fitness levels.

We can often dismiss our tiredness and low energy levels as pitfalls of a busy and stressful lifestyle, but these symptoms may be hiding a far more serious health issue. We could actually be suffering from Iron deficiency. Millions of unsuspecting people, particularly women are getting far too little Iron though the foods they eat. Even female athletes can suffer with some getting up to 60% less than their dietary needs. Severe deficiency can occasionally lead to clinical anaemia as the mineral is a building block for healthy red blood cells. Less common symptoms are frequent headaches, palpitations, hair loss, itchy skin and an altered state of taste. Some simple diet changes can help us increase our Iron intake. Lean red meat contains three times as much Iron as chicken and 250 times more than brocolli. Adding some leafy green vegetables such as kale plus a glass of fresh fruit juice to your meal will greatly increase your iron absorption too.

Instant wellbeing APPARENTLY, EXPERTS have recently released a list of tips to help us combat the stresses of modern life. These are designed to help us gain control of our hectic schedules and bring back the Feel Good Factor (a bit like the X Factor without Simon Cowell). So if you enjoy lists of simple steps that may make a difference immediately, here are the experts top 5 tips: 1. READING Read autobiographies instead of fiction or self-help books. Reading about other people's achievements and the obstacles they have overcome in life can help us get a shape of our own. However try to avoid the autobiographies of serial killers. 2. Drink vinegar Yes a big glug of cider vinegar added to a mug of luke warm water every morning can boost your immune system and help with hunger cravings. Even though it would probably taste better poured over a plate of chips. 3. Digital Detox Turn off all phones, tablets, laptops and digital devices for an hour every day to enjoy some quiet time. It might help to put a muzzle on the neighbours dog too, if you crave complete silence. 4. Take a brisk walk It will help to boost energy levels and release tension in the body, particularly for

those with desk jobs. Taking the desk with you for company might cause back pain, so leave it in the office. 5. The benefits of a cold shower Taking a cold shower in the morning will boost energy levels, aid circulation and help the immune system stay healthy. It will also ensure you wake your neighbours with the loud screams you emit as the freezing water hits your nice warm, senstive body. I’m guessing these experts were almost certainly forced to do National Service in an earlier life.

Workout with the housework DON’T have time to exercise? No need to worry, just do the housework. By Gemma Quinn A new study has found that you can burn off more than 2000 calories a week by doing the household chores such as cleaning the bath, doing the washing and hoovering the house which is the equivalent of doing a gym session. The findings also researched which chores are best for working out certain areas of the body. So what jobs around the house are the most beneficial to burn calories and tone up? Scrubbing the bath 100 calories can be burned off by using a bit of elbow grease when cleaning the bath for 15 minutes which is roughly the same as thirty jumping squats. This chore is great for toning arms and shoulder muscles. Laundry Factoring in loading and unloading the washing machine, hanging up the clothes and putting them away, doing the laundry can burn 78 calories which is the same as doing 100 sit-ups.

Washing up Spending 15 minutes a night scrubbing away at the dishes can burn more than 500 calories over a week, around the same as swimming 2,500m. Hoovering Giving the carpets a good clean can burn 90 calories in half an hour, which is the same as 15 minutes of kick-boxing. Depending on the size of your house, hoovering can also get you nearer to the daily recommendation of walking 10,000 steps. Mopping and sweeping Cleaning the floors for 30 minutes can burn 145 calories, Gardening Half an hour of pottering around in the garden can burn 213 calories, which is same as 45 minutes of cycling on flat terrain. Digging works your shoulder and abdominal muscles.

Looking to an early Spring COLD winter days used to be my least favourite time of year, now I love looking through seed catalogues and planning this year’s spring’s veggie or flower garden. I guess that’s where the expression “gardeners are the forever optimists” came from. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing that new growth sprouting up out of the ground in the spring! The first official day of spring is March 20th, but the effects of warmer weather and brighter days this winter means spring could be early. Go outside and hunt for signs of spring as part of your daily Green Hour this month. Here are some “spring things” to look and listen for: budding trees and flowers, crocuses, daffodils, newly arriving bird species, nest building, caterpillars, ducks flying overhead, rainy days, worms on the pavement. As soon as you see them… get planting! For the veg growers amongst us, it time to look at planting: Tomatoes, Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Corn, Cucumbers, Lettuce, Melons, Onions, Peppers and Herbs that love the heat: basil, oregano, thyme and sage. For the flowery persons, spring means plants like: Lungwort ‘Diana Clare’, Bishop’s hat ‘Sulphureum’, Wallflower ‘Bowles’s Mauve’, Eastern cyclamen, Downy clematis, Daffodil ‘Jetfire’, Tulip ‘Spring Green’, Dog’s tooth violet ‘Pagoda’, Magnolia ‘Leonard Messel’ and Grape hyacinth ‘Valerie Finnis’.

Tips for the newbie Spanish gardener WHETHER you are new to Spain or have just moved to a new area and were wondering how to go about your garden, here are a few tips to help you on your way. Try to use available natural material to build your flower beds. Local rock and stone will look much nicer than brick or other fabricated material. If your garden is on a mountainside, don’t make a path which goes straight from top to bottom. A winding path will be easier to build and easier to negotiate. If you don’t want bare concrete but are on a budget, cement the odd flat stepping stone in place and fill the gaps with gravel – it’s much cheaper than paving. If you don’t want to spend your whole life with a hosepipe in your hand, then install a watering system (or three). Prune Lantana, Oleander and Hibiscus any time from November through February. Wear gloves to prune Lantana, Oleander and to cut cacti as many people suffer allergic reactions to these. Lantana seeds and Oleander leaves are highly poisonous to animals. English bulbs will grow here, but plant them early as they’re likely to flower far ahead of when you might expect. For winter colour, use bedding plants in pots; you can buy petunias and other common bedding plants all the year round. There are often high winds on the Spanish Costas. If your garden is exposed don’t plant tender plants but go for hardy ones which don’t mind the wind. Don’t overwater citrus trees once they have become established. They don’t really need any additional water once they’ve reached full size.

A rustic touch that serves a purpose DRY-STONE walls can be a beautiful addition to your garden, and unlike bricks, the materials can be found readily available cheaply, or even for free if you’re lucky enough to live in the Spanish countryside. The list of materials you will need to build any size or shape of dry-stone wall are: No 1, Stone. That’s it! Nothing more is needed well apart from your imagination that is. Dry-stone walling is made by stacking stones without (wet) mortar to hold them together. Stone walls are strong and attractive and can last hundreds of years. But if you decide you don’t like them, you can just take them down and build them up again somewhere else. Let’s take a closer look at how they work: A brick wall is made from regular stacks of identically shaped blocks locked together with a gritty adhesive called mortar. A drystone wall is much more natural: it’s little more than a vertical stack of stones laid together slowly and carefully so they lock together under their own weight. Brick walls need mortar to hold them up because they often reach high in the air, whereasdry-stone walls are used mainly for fencing in animals or marking out the edges of a garden, so they seldom need to go higher than 1–1.5 meters. By choosing the stones carefully and packing them tightly together with very thoughtful design, you can make a really strong structure that’s completely selfsupporting. Apart from looking great, it will provide excellent shelter for livestock and habitats for rock plants.

How to avoid DIY disasters DIY can be full of pitfalls for the inexperienced amateur, and mistakes can be both expensive and time consuming to solve. Here are the most common problems amateurs stumble across and how to avoid them. 1. Use a Spirit Level Simple tasks such as fixing a shelf to a wall may seem like a five minute job. But, time saved by not establishing a level, could later mean ornaments and books fall over or slide straight off. The extra minutes taken to establish a level edge and pencil a guideline to work by will prove worth the effort when your books stay aligned. 2. Always use primers Watermarks can prove a nightmare to concealand painting over stains with water-based emulsions won’t help. First apply an oil-based primer to seal it, and then paint over the top as normal. 3. Think practically Sudden inspirational ideas are wonderful, However, it’s always worth pausing to consider their future practicality. To give an example, panelling bathroom walls around baths and toilets makes fo an attractive, clean finish but may well cause future issues, when inevitable leaks occur and pipes need to be reached. If removable panels or concealed doors were included in the planning stage, the problem would not occur. 4. Avoid choosing the quick fix After wet weather, wooden doors often swell and stick in their frames. The problem can be quickly fixed by

planeing the wood, but unless it is then painted over and sealed it will just swell again the next time it rains. 5. Don’t always go for the cheaper option Buying expensive paintbrushes for just one job is pointless. However try to steer away from using budget brushes as they have fewer bristles, leading to an untidy finish. In addition, they may moult more than midrange brushes leaving single residuel brushes in your finished work. Synthetic brushes work perfectly for DIY projects and rarely lose their shape, unlike the natural alternatives. 6. Protect edges Masking tape and old sheets are your friends and the five minutes you use putting them in place will save hours of cleaning up paint stains after the job is done. 7. Buy enough materials It’s always better to have a little paint left over than to end up with patches exposing the need to stop halfway through the job and rush to the shop for more. You will always use it in the future. This works opposite when cutting materials such as wood, wallpaper or carpets. Check every measurement before making cuts and remember less is more, you can always cut off a little extra but if you cut too short you will end up wasting time and money. 8.Prepare in advance Always vacuum thoroughly before painting. Dust left floating in the air will surely to stick to any wet paint ruining your finish. Leave dust sheets down until the paint has completely dried.

Mattel Aristotle Mattel’s Aristotle is like a smart baby monitor and Amazon Echo rolled into one. The smart voice-activated speaker works with a companion camera and is intended to help with tasks like soothing a crying baby, buying more diapers, encouraging kids to mind their manners, or helping them learn a foreign language. What can it do? • Automatically recognizes when babies wake up, and soothes them to sleep with a lullaby, white noise, a favorite song or a night-light. Logs wet diapers and feedings via voice commands or a phone app. • Automatically orders more diapers or formula from Target, Babies R Us and other participating retailers. • Automatically looks for deals and coupons on consumable baby supplies. • Actually recognizes and answers young kids’ questions after a brief voice recognition

training session • Answers questions until your child falls asleep. • Plays guessing games with kids based on animal noises (say the name of the animal) or shapes held up to the camera (say the name of the shape), then lights up with the correct answer. • Reads aloud from a selection of dozens of children’s books, accompanying them with sound and light effects that match the stories. • Hosts sing-alongs and teaches ABCs and 1-2-3s. • Recognizes specially designed kids’ toys with embedded NFC chips, or with its camera, and provides sound effects when kids play with them (an upcoming Hot Wheels racetrack was one example). • Optionally requires kids to say “Please” when they ask Aristotle for things, to help teach manners. • Helps kids with homework.

Razer Project Valerie One Screen Not Enough?

When you’re using a laptop for doing work, playing video games, and streaming Netflix, one screen isn’t always enough. So why not include three? Razer’s Project Valerie concept does just that by adding two foldable displays that expand out

Plume Plume is a wearable device that tracks pollution around you – kind of like a Fitbit for air quality if you will. It tracks particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide, ozone, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), temperature and humidity. It can be clipped to a bag and is designed for people who live in big polluted cities.

from the primary screen in the center. Each display is 17 inches diagonally and supports 4K resolution, and Razer says they can be used independently or together as one giant display. The downside: it weighs 12 pounds, which isn’t unacceptable for a beefy gaming laptop but is way more than the average notebook.

Mashitup!

When it comes to DJ Mixing these days, traditional vinyl decks don’t cut the mustard!

With many Software DJ and Mixing packages available, it’s easy to start up your own mixing station, you just need some rythmn! You can use the software to reproduce, loop, mix, speed up tempos and much more. Some even offer voice pitch control. Add a hardware controller and you can add in keyboards, drum machines, samplers and more. Many modern software packages even offer upto 4 mixing decks if you can cope with it. Will.I.Am eat your heart out! Virtual DJ is one of the best known, and very affordable. Here’s what Virtual DJ says about it’s product Go: https://www.virtualdj.com/products/virtualdj/ for more info and current prices VirtualDJ is a DJ software for PC and MAC. It is used by DJs to replace their turntables and CD players, and use digital music instead of vinyl and CDs. In the same way that the CD players used by DJs have more options than a regular Hi-Fi CD player, VirtualDJ has more options than a simple media player like iTunes. It lets you “mix” your songs, by playing two or more tracks at the same time, adjust their relative speed so that their tempo will match, apply effects like loops etc, and crossfade from one side to the other. It also lets you scratch your songs, set and recall cues, and all the other regular features DJs expect to find to be able to mix. It will let you organize your collection of tracks and group them easily in a DJ-friendly way, using filter to find the hot songs, or find compatible bpm or key, access your previous playlists, etc. And if you’re missing a track, VirtualDJ will automatically find it on the Internet and stream it directly (*requires an additional subscription). And, using the millions of automatic reports we get every day from other VirtualDJ users

around the world, it will give you meaningful advices on which songs other DJs consider to go well after what you just played. It comes with a plethora of effects, ranging from traditional flanger, echo, etc, to more modern “beat-aware” effects like beatgrid, slicer, loop-roll. And if you mix videos, you’ll also find a lot of video effects and transitions to play with. Its built-in sampler will let you spice up your mixes with a broad range of drops and loops, or you can go creative and merge live performance and production by creating remixes on-the-fly by using the sampler like a sequencer. VirtualDJ is plug-and-play compatible with most of the DJ controllers that exist on the market. Just plug yours and you will be ready to go. And if you want to change any of the default behavior, VirtualDJ has a powerful “VDJScript” language that will let you easily tweak any functions exactly to your liking. Same for the interface. If you want to change it, our website hosts hundreds of user-made interfaces to replace the default one, or you could easily create your own. VirtualDJ is used by tens of millions of people every day, ranging from bedroom DJs to international superstars. It is used to play live in clubs and big stadiums, at weddings, private parties, or just to train at home. And in addition to being used live, VirtualDJ can also be used to record mixtapes, podcast, or to broadcast to Internet radios. VirtualDJ can play not only audio tracks, but also video or karaoke, if you connect your computer to a projector or the club’s screens.

motoring

By Mathew Elliot

Look, don’t touch LONDON’S Classic Car Show was a cracking success. Tens of thousands of people swarmed through the showcase event at the city’s Excel centre from Feb 23-26 gawping at the legendary cars on display and catching a glimpse of motoring heroes in the flesh.

By Matthew Elliott Legends of LeMans Emanuele Pirro and Derek Bell kicked off the proceedings, while Dario Franchitti was drafted in by Ferrari to cut the ribbon on 21 tribute cars with a total worth of roughly €150 million. As for the classic cars, well there was a terrific variety. Spectators could find a heavily guarded €50 million plus Ferrari 250 GT parked just metres away from a 1970 Ford Escort designed to grind through the torturous 25,000km London to Mexico rally. There was also a 1973 Ford Capri 3000 GXL that had less than 5,000 miles on the clock, a gorgeous Jaguar E-Type and a Lotus 21 Climax formerly raced by Jim Clark

Bzzzz It’s a Vespa! The scooter was invented in 1947 as a low cost alternative to the automobile in warravaged Europe – it was designed as transport for the masses and it caught on so quickly that it became one of the great transport phenomena to sweep the world in the 20th century.

The Vespa (which means “wasp” in Italian) was the result of Enrico Piaggio’s determination to create a viable alternative to the automobile for the masses. As the war drew to a close, Enrico studied every possible solution to get production in his plants going again. Piaggio was founded in Genoa in 1884 by twenty-year-old Rinaldo Piaggio. The first activity of Rinaldo’s factory was luxury ship fitting. But by the end of the century,

Piaggio was also producing rail carriages, goods vans, luxury coaches and engines, trams and special truck bodies. World War I brought a new diversification that was to distinguish Piaggio activities for many decades. The company started producing aeroplanes and seaplanes. At the same time, new plants were springing up. In 1917 Piaggio bought a new plant in Pisa, and four years later it took over a small plant in Pontedera which first became the centre of aeronautical production (propellers, engines and complete aircraft) and then, after World War II, witnessed the birth of the iconic Vespa. The war, a radical watershed for the entire Italian economy, was equally important for Piaggio. The Pontedera plant built the state-of-the-art fourengine P 108 equipped with a 1,500-bhp Piaggio engine in passenger and bomber versions. However Piaggio’s aeronautical plants in Tuscany (Pontedera and Pisa) were important military targets and on August 31, 1943 they were razed to the ground by Allied bombers, after the retreating Germans had already mined the pillars of the buildings and irrevocably damaged the plants.

Superbike Champ

By Matthew Elliott KAWASAKI rider Jonathan Rea kicked off his World Superbike defence by winning both races at Australia’s Phillip Island circuit. The Northern Irish-man won a thrilling Race 1 on Saturday February 25, edging Chaz Davies by barely a metre, following up with another flash finish victory on Sunday’s Race 2. The 30-year-old has now opened up a ten point lead in the rankings over Welshman Davies, and Tom Sykes of England. Marco Melandri of Italy came in third place in the weekend’s race. Rea is now gunning to win the Superbike World Championship for a record third consecutive time, having stormed to victory in 2015 and 2016.

Ferrari have unveiled the car with which they will contest the 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship. The SF70H was uncovered at the Italian team’s Fiorano circuit on Friday. With it, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen will be bidding to improve on Ferrari’s third place in last year’s constructors’ standings, as well as their own respective fourth and sixth places in the table. With 2017’s new rules set to make cars significantly quicker than in 2016, Ferrari have concentrated their development efforts on finding the right compromise between downforce and aerodynamic resistance, or drag, on the SF70H. Its lengthened nose and arrow-shaped front wing are a consequence of the regulations, as is the obvious fin on the engine cover and the more complex aero appendages ahead of the air intakes on the sidepods, whose unusual shape was designed in harmony with the front crash structure. Visible at the front is a duct that has an aerodynamic role, while behind the driver, the roll-hoop, which incorporates the engine air intake has been completely redesigned. Also updated is the suspension layout, which still retains a push rod design at the front with pull rods at the rear. The hubs and wheel nuts have been redesigned to facilitate the work of the mechanics when changing wheels during the pit stops. Finally, also as a function of the expected increase in performance this year, the power-steering and braking systems have been upsized.

Drive Relax Mode By Matthew Elliott

PEUGEOT are setting the bar high for estate cars with their new concept design. What makes this car, set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show, different is its incredible driving modes on offer. It can be driven manually or in autonomous mode by the car computer. Drivers who prefer being behind the wheel can choose two modes, Drive Boost and Drive Relax. The car, dubbed ‘Instinct’, uses artificial intelligence to ‘learn’ the drivers behaviour and adapt accordingly. So the car might read your diary and see that you’ve just come out of the gym. It’ll then change its operating system to ‘Relax’ which is a form of joint driver and computer driving which allows you to relax on the way home. For instance the car might take over navigation, allowing you to focus purely on manoeuvers. The car can also read traffic conditions and send warnings to your phone encouraging you to leave the meeting or bar before the roads are congested. There is also a virtual passenger who can order cinema tickets or buy shopping online through voice instructions. Or offer a bit of company, or someone to shout at after a rough day.

A walk in the park With more than 800 clubs in the UK alone, the phenomenon known as Walking Football has finally started to gain respectability as a real sport. By Keith Nicol Last week the FA published their first draft of official rules for Walking Football and it's hoped that a version of these will soon be incorporated by the Spanish Football Federation also. The sport came to wider public attention in July 2014, when Barclays Bank aired a television advertisement featuring walking football to promote their services. Walking football is aimed at keeping people aged over 50. Walking football was devised, during 2011, by the Chesterfield F.C. Community Trust and has quickly spread throughout the UK and gaining a strong following here in Spain. The new official rules are designed to allow older players an opportunity to play once again, with the main differences being that players cannot run, but only walk, meaning one foot mus be on the ground at any one time, otherwise a free kick will be given. If you are caught running three times, you receive a Blue Card and two minutes sitting in the Sin Bin. This restriction, together with a ban on sliding tackles, no kicking the ball higher than six feet high, a semi-circle penalty area that only the goalkeeper can enter, and no heading of the ball, is aimed at avoiding injuries and promoting cardiovascular fitness and helping maintain an active lifestyle. Keeping in mind the age of the players, many clubs in Spain are now adding a defibrillator to their standard first add kits. The latest club to do so is the Monte Monte Mentals whose coordinator Stan Dibble demonstrated the unit to both the players and the press on Tuesday. The Monte Mentals play in Los Montesinos very Tuesday and Friday at 10am. Those who would like more information can contact Stan at: MonteStan@gmail.com.

Eurogolf Toffs

Captains Day at Lo Romero

On Tuesday 21st February, 74 players took part in the weekly Toffs stableford competition. The conditions were perfect for golf which made way for some good results. Cat 1 (0-14): 1st Malcolm Foskett 38, 2nd John Barraclough 35, 3rd Bill Martin 34. Cat 2 (15-19): 1st Gary Grierson 35, 2nd Clive Peck 34 c/b, 3rd Bert Lawson 34. Cat 3 (20-25): 1st David Horne c/b 35, 2nd Geoff Evans 35, 3rd David Valentine 34. Cat 4 (26-36): 1st Lauraine Walker 36, 2nd Ed Silvester 32, 3rd Franco Gentili 31. Overall winner: Malcolm Foskett. Best front 9: John Kirkwood 19. Best back 9: Ken Enever 19. The Plaza Golf Society NTP’s: 5th Malcolm Foskett, 11th Clive Horne - hole in one, 12th in two George McCallum, 15th Alan Venables, 17th Clive Peck. Football draw: Colin Daye-Gretton, Monique Reeve, Ken Brett, Debbie Weedon and Robin Richards. Unfortunately there was no Eurogolf competition on Thursday as it had rained heavy during the night. People using buggies would have had to stick to the paths plus the weather forecast was for thunder and rain so a lot of people cancelled but those who went out and played found the conditions perfect! The entertainment secretary would like to remind members that the list for St Patricks day at Laurels is up so to please book your tables as soon as possible. If you would like to play with Eurogolf at La Marquesa on Tuesdays and Thursdays please visit the website www.eurogolf-quesada.co.uk.

A GREAT day was had by all at Lo Romero, a very popular course with The Plaza Golf Society members. There was a great turnout and the ‘two’s’ pot was looking very healthy at €168 after last week’s rollover. Even with all the great golfers not one person took the pot, meaning the next game at La Torre is looking good for a €200 pot. The nearest the pin was sponsored by The Alehouse, GF Villamartin plaza. The spice took hole 5, John ‘one’ Eyre hole 7, Chris Caswell hole 12 and Mick the Grip hole 15. Phil Sully took the nearest the hole in two on hole 9 and hole 17 in three was taken by Kenny McPherson. Winners received a €10 bar tab at Alehouse, golf balls and Cava. The lowest scorer of the day was Lee Williamson with an impressive 17 points!!! Taking a bottle of wine home to drown his sorrows. The best lady was Linda Ottaway with 29 points collecting a bottle of wine. Guest player Richard Smith came in with 37 points from his handicap of 18 and Wayne Biggs scored an impressive 39 points from his handicap of 22. Both received wine and golf balls. The members category paid out four places for Captains Day with Ron Temple scoring 33 points from his nine handicap. Kenny McPherson claimed third place with his handicap of 14, scoring an impressive 36 points, Kevin Rose scored a great 38 points and coming second on countback with his handicap of 14. Dave Lethaby scored a magnificent 38 points from his handicap of 13. The next event is at La Torre on March 10. There are limited spaces left so please book early for this event. Email theplazagolfsociety@gmail.com or visit the Facebook page.
