by Tahnee Wright THe porT of denia has two key objectives as part of its growth plan – to strengthen the city and to establish it as a future berth for cruise ships. Balearia, responsible for the management of denia Maritime station recently presented an improvement plan to the ports of the Generalitat to extend its facilities with an investment of €2 million. Balearia would like to build a dock for the mooring of cruise ships and install a heliport.

parking would be improved and the port would be accredited as a schengen port. in compliance with regulations, the investment would also provide for the adaptation of a zone for the treatment of waste. already this year, Balearia has demonstrated its dedication to the port of denia, having joined the siCTed (integrated system of Tourist Quality in destinations) and initiating the necessary actions to distinguish itself in 2017 as a ‘puerto de atraque de Cruceros y Ferris’ (port for cruises and ferries).

The siCTed is a project designed to improve the quality of tourist destinations promoted by the General secretariat of Tourism and the spanish Federation of Municipalities and provinces (FeMp) – aiming to positively influence the experience and satisfaction of the tourists visiting a siCTed destination. This project offers companies an improvement in the internal management of customer satisfaction processes, a better qualification of staff through a training plan and technical assistance.

83-year-old woman dies in Javea ecoparque

An 83-year-old woman of German nationality died last week in Javea when she fell down a set of steps at the ecoparque.

The woman had visited the ecoparque to deposit some green garden waste. There are steps to access the various bins which are of fair height and the woman lost her footing and fell. The woman, who lived with her husband in a chalet on the Balcon del Mar urbanisation, was found by a young man who saw her lying motionless on the ground. The young man called the emergency services and the local Police of Javea and an ambulance (SVB) with a doctor from the health centre soon attended the scene. Several Guardia Civil officers also arrived. The ambulance took the woman to a parking lot in the nearby Guardia Park urbanisation, where a 112-metre helicopter was waiting to transport her to hospital. The doctor managed to initially stabilise the woman but she required resuscitation again and died shortly after.

by Tahnee Wright Carme ChaCon, Spain’s first female defence minister and a prominent socialist party leader, has died aged 46. Chacon, who was famously photographed in 2008 reviewing troops in afghanistan while seven months pregnant, died in her madrid home on Sunday from a congenital heart condition. She was Spain's first female defence minister, symbolising the change of culture since the end of military rule. In 2007 ms Chacon also served as housing minister in the Socialist government led by exPrime minister José Luis rodríguez Zapatero. Spanish politicians were among the many Spaniards who expressed shock and sympathy over ms Chacon’s sudden death. mr Zapatero said he was ‘heartbroken at the death of my comrade and friend.’ he said ‘we feel emptiness, because of the enormity of this loss, for Spanish democracy and for all socialists’. The current Popular Party (PP) defence minister, Dolores de Cospedal, said ‘I deeply mourn the ex-minister.’ ‘my heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and the Socialist Party. rIP.’ at the age of 37, and seven months pregnant, she visited afghanistan, five days after being appointed defence minister. She told el Pais ‘pregnant or not, I was clear that my first duty was to visit those who are

able to put their lives at risk for higher values: for other people's freedom.’ ‘a pregnant woman is not sick. Sure, it's harder when you're pregnant and on your feet all day. I wanted to express society's gratitude to those who put themselves in danger to bring peace to regions of conflict.’ after the afghanistan trip, she also reviewed troops in madrid while pregnant in may 2008. She joined the Socialist Youth at the age of 18, and began her political career as a local councillor in 1999-2007. Later she served as an mP representing a Barcelona constituency. She was born in Llobregat, Barcelona, in 1971. She was the daughter of a fire service official in Barcelona and his lawyer wife. as a girl, she had been advised to lead a calm life because of her heart condition. But she ignored the advice repeatedly - including the suggestion that it would be risky to have children. ms Chacon had also taught political science at miami Dade College, in Florida, whose president eduardo J Padron said her contribution had ‘left an indelible mark’. ‘Spain is losing a distinguished figure from its modern political scene. and Spanish women are losing someone who always took a stand to emphasise the importance of women's roles in modern society, and among the college's faculty and students.’ Chacon leaves behind her husband and 8-year-old son.

Derelict Benidorm hotel to get a clean up by Andy Mansell For many years, the Selomar Hotel, on Benidorm’s iconic Levante Beachfront, close to the old Town, was considered to be one of the premier four star hotels in the city. With its stylish facade and balconies overlooking the sparkling mediterranean, it attracted discerning visitors from all over Europe, attracted by its facilities and central location close to beach and town. However, once it became a little faded and outdated, rather than reform the hotel, the owners decided to close it ten years ago. Throughout the intervening years the building sat empty and unloved, a fading reminder of its glamourous past until a fire in october 2015 rendered severe damage to the building's infrastructure, which caused major safety issues and enforced evacuation for 75 neighbouring residents. These days, the burnt out shell of the Selomar is covered in tarpaulins and sheeting, a sad blot on the landscape of the Benidorm Levante Beach. Despite several requests to the owners of the Hotel from Benidorm City Hall, no renovation or safety work has been undertaken, so in February they threatened to carry out the work themselves and charge the owners with the repair bill. In march the local government decid-

Work has started to improve the safety and outward appearance of the fire damaged abandoned Selomar Hotel in Benidorm

ed to suspend the decree of sanction that the Urban department had given until the end of the Hotel's license expired. This allowed them to begin work on the building to improve safety and ensure the facade of the hotel remains in keeping with other buildings surrounding it. Work has already begun on the project and should be completed by the end of may. Documents released by the City Hall reveal plans for the work will focus not only on improving the safety of the building but will also concentrate on the facades, ground floor and balconies. almost 2,000 square meters of existing tarpaulins will be removed from the three facades, 122 linear meters of metal canopy and another 122 of metallic fencing in the ground floor will also be disposed of.

The works will also include improvement work on the ground floor pillars and false ceiling, plus, painting and a cleaning of the porch. In addition rails on the second floor are to be removed and replaced with cantilevered metal balconies and terraces and then painted. The seafront facade will also be revised with the removal of furniture from the balconies and removal of fire damaged items. Similar work will be conducted on the rear of the property and to the pavement which suffered damage in the fire. although the renovation work will not return the Selomar Hotel to its glory days, it will ensure its safety to passers-by, and improve on its unsightly, current appearance.

Police crack Calpe drug den Guardia Civil have arrested a man and a woman of dominican origin – both 25-years-old – for a crime against public health (drug trafficking) as they were found to be selling cocaine from their home in Calpe. at the end of January this year, the Guardia Civil of Calpe detected the address as a possible point of sale of drugs. after installing a surveillance device, they soon realised that the address in question was indeed a very active point of sale. The duo had an ‘established schedule’ of distribution with a continuous flow of customers arriving at their property every day between 5.00pm and 11.00pm. Once sufficient evidence had been obtained, Guardia Civil agents raided the property with the support of agents from the Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) in Alicante and the Cinologica Service. a total of 62.70 grams of cocaine, €6,218 in cash, 6 mobile phones, a tablet and a laptop were seized in the raid, along with 310 grams of powder with which the couple ‘cut’ the cocaine - reducing its purity and tools to manipulate and prepare the drug for sale – wires, plastic bags and a precision scale. The man has already been put in prison on court order, while the woman is on provisional release with charges.

Tips for Easter road users

With the long easter weekend almost upon us, it's worth remembering that the Costa Blanca region is one of the most popular holiday spots for Spanish tourists too, who love it for exactly the same reasons we do. easter is the first main holiday of the year in Spain and with schools closed many people take advantage of the three bank holiday days to head off to the coast. Madrid, Zaragoza and the Northern cities become ghost towns, whilst our small coastal towns can be as busy as August. the extra traffic congestion can be annoying and frustrating for residents, meaning we may not be quite as vigilant towards road rules as normal. With an increased police presence throughout the region over the next two weeks, over 3000 fines were handed out by Guardia Civil trafico in a week, with 3 points deducted from licences. Most offences related to seat belts not being worn and children not strapped into child seats. traffic police are now using unmarked cars and handing out on the spot fines to drivers using mobile phones whilst driving, eating and drinking and even lighting a cigarette. Drivers need to be extra vigilant, particularly at junctions, roundabouts and when turning left. Remember, a Stop sign means Stop before you proceed. Use signalling on roundabouts and be aware of crossing a continous white line when parking or turning left. All these minor infringements are an easy way for officers to hand out fines for offences we may unwittingly commit every day. if you are unsure of the differences in road rules between UK and Spain it is well worth brushing up on them before you head out onto the busy roads this easter. the best tip is to drive safely, with concentration and consideration for other road users.

Benidorm to get more bike parks by Andy Mansell Anyone who cycles in and around the city of Benidorm regularly will be aware of the cycle lanes that have appeared over the last year or so, particularly the controversial one that runs along the centre of Avenidas Jaime 1 and Alfonso Puchades. This has been part of the City hall's plans to make Benidorm a 'Bike Friendly' urban environment, intended to encourage residents and workers to use their bikes to travel into and out of the city rather than cars. So far, so environmentally good. however until now, there has been a distinct lack of bike racks or stations around the city, leaving cyclists with no option but to lock their bikes against trees, lamposts, rubbish bins or any available railing they can find. This situation is causing severe irritation to bike users and local residents who are unhappy with cyclists tying their bikes to any object they come across. one cyclist making a complaint to the council explained: ''I have no choice but to leave it tied to a pole anyway, because there is no place to park nearby and the bar where I work is small and

we have no space to put it inside," The problem is not confined to the pedestrian streets of Benidorm centre either. The promenades of levante and Poniente beaches and the Avenidas Mediterraneo, europa or Jaime I also suffer from a severe lack of bike parking spaces. The City hall are painfully aware of the parking problems experienced by cyclists in the town and also appreciate the problems have undoubtedly worsened following the new initiatives to create cycle lanes on the main avenues, improve signage, bicycle lanes and campaign to encourage the use of cycles by residents and tourists. They have even run specific adver-

tising promotions aimed at attracting bike travellers, with the intention of encouraging eco tourism to the urban areas and reduce vehicle congestion. head of Mobility for the City, José Ramón González de Zárate January admitted the council had underestimated the amount bike users in Benidorm and had installed 50 bicycle racks in different areas since January with preference in school areas and sports clubs such as the Palau d'esports. In addition, there are plans to install at least another fifty more bike parking spaces. "People are using the bike more and more and we want to make it easier for everyone" he said.

Perfect pavements in Denia ThroughouT March and april, the city of Denia has been busy in its improvement works on the pavements to improve safety for pedestrians. There have been improvements on La avenida del Montgo, where the visibility of the steps that cross the avenue has been enhanced. Near the Vessanes school, a metal railing has been installed along the pavement to prevent pedestrians from crossing, diverting them instead to a safer point. on la calle de candida carbonell, the pavement has been extended to improve safety for the schoolchildren and a metal railing will also be installed here. The pavements of la avenida de alicante are being completely renovated at the section between la plaza del archiduque carlos and la calle de gata de gorgos. Suspected Russian U.S. election hacker arrested in Barcelona

by Tahnee Wright A RussiAn computer programmer, Pyotr Levashov, was arrested in Barcelona last week. it remains unclear as to why Levashov was arrested - the spanish police and the interior ministry were unavailable for comment and the Russian Embassy in Madrid declined to give details for his arrest. Russian television station RT has reported that Levashov was arrested under a u.s. international arrest warrant and was suspected of being involved in hacking attacks linked to alleged inter-

ference in last year's u.s. election. Peter Carr, a spokesman for the u.s. Justice Department’s criminal division, told Reuters: ‘The u.s. case remains under seal, so we have no information to provide at this time.’ The criminal division is separate from the national security division, which is responsible for investigating state-sponsored cybercrimes. A u.s. Department of Justice official said it was a criminal matter without an apparent national security connection. in January, spanish police arrested

another Russian computer programmer, whose name was given as ‘Lisov’ and who was wanted by the united states for leading a financial fraud network. The u.s. government has formally accused Russia of hacking Democratic Party emails to help the campaign of Republican President Donald Trump. The u.s. Congress is also examining links between Russia and Trump during the election campaign. Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have repeatedly denied that Russia tried to influence the election.

UK EuroMillions players win £6.95 billion

AheAd of the 1,000th euroMillions draw on friday April 21, figures from Euro-Millions.com reveal that UK players have scooped an amazing £6.95 billion so far. EuroMillions was launched in February 2004, with players from the UK, France and Spain competing weekly for multimillion-pound prizes. Thirteen years on, there are now nine participating countries who play twice a week, and the game is about to be drawn for the one thousandth time. Delving into its comprehensive results archive, EuroMillions.com can reveal that UK players have shared an amazing £6.95 billion between themselves, whilst the overall Europe-wide prize pool stands at €34.5 billion, with a week still to go until the milestone draw. Ayrshire couple Christine and Colin Weir hold the honour of being the UK's biggest ever EuroMillions winners, having banked £161.6 million in July 2011 and are closely followed by Adrian and Gillian Bayford of Cambridgeshire, who landed £148.6 million in August 2012. Green gas exported to the Netherlands from the UK For the first time biomethane, also known as green gas, is being exported from the UK to europe via the interconnector pipeline to essent in the Netherlands. the green gas is being sent from the UK by Barrow Green Gas.essent, the largest energy company in the Netherlands, is importing green gas to meet growing demand in the Netherlands which cannot all be met locally. tim Wijnen, manager developing markets at essent said: ‘Simply put, over time there will not be enough raw materials in the Netherlands to produce sufficient green gas from. It is anticipated that the number of green gas production sites will not be in step with the future demand. As the largest green gas supplier in the Netherlands, we have therefore given thought to how we will be able to continue to supply sufficient green gas in the Netherlands in the future too and that is to import green gas from neighbouring trusted countries.”the green gas is produced by JV energen of Dorchester, which was the first commercial plant to inject green gas into the existing UK gas network. Barrow Green Gas delivers the green gas to rWe, essent’s parent company, for delivery to the Netherlands via a pipeline that connects the UK to continental europe. tim Davis, managing director at Barrow Green Gas said: ‘We have worked closely with JV energen, essent and rWe to put in place the arrangements which mean that not only Green Gas Certificates but also green gas is being delivered from the UK to the Netherlands. All the parties involved have been ISCC certified to demonstrate compliance with sustainability requirements, another first for the UK biomethane industry.’

UK doctors propose ketamine for depression British experts are calling for the illegal recreational drug ketamine to be taken seriously in treating depression. the sedative, intended for use on large animals, generated positive results in trials on patients with severe depression in the UK. Photo credit: healthline.com

by Tahnee Wright In a study published in the Lancet Psychiatry journal, specialists from Oxford University said there is an urgent need for ethical and innovative action by doctors to prescribe the drug under controlled conditions. ‘We think patients' treatment should be in specialist centres and formally tracked in national or international registries,’ said Rupert McShane, a consultant psychiatrist and researcher at Oxford who has led a series of ketamine studies. Ketamine is a licensed medical drug,

widely used as an anaesthetic and to relieve pain. But it is also used as a recreational drug - sometimes known as Special K - and can lead some people into addiction and drug abuse.Several research teams around the world have been trialling ketamine use in chronic and recurring depression, since many patients with the psychiatric condition fail to respond to currently available antidepressants such as Prozac and Seroxat. ‘I have seen ketamine work where nothing has helped before,’ McShane said at a briefing in London. The U.S. pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson is developing an intranasal form of the drug, called esketamine. Its results so far have

been promising enough for Food and Drug administration officials to award esketamine ‘breakthrough’ status to speed its progress through regulatory hurdles. McShane and his co-researcher Ilina Singh, a psychiatry professor at Oxford University, told the briefing there had been a worrying sharp rise in the past year in the number of private ketamine clinics in the United States. There are wide variations in the clinical checks before a patient receives treatment, they said, and there is a need for clear guidelines and registries to track how patients respond. Last month, the american Psychiatric association issued a consensus statement on ketamine in a bid to guide safe, appropriate prescribing of the drug for severe patients who do not respond to regular antidepressants. McShane stressed that the ketamine doses used in the Oxford depression treatment trials are given in controlled conditions and are very different from those taken by street or club users. On the street, users often take several grams a day and can suffer severe bladder problems and impaired brain function. The doses used in medical trials are a fraction of that - around 80 milligrams - and given once a week in a monitored setting.

EU Commission cracks down on misleading travel websites Two-Thirds of travel booking websites provide misleading information on prices and so breach EU consumer protection rules, the European Commission said on Friday. in its survey of 352 online travel booking and comparison services, it found a third of the websites displayed initial prices which were not the final prices and in a fifth of the cases promotional offers were not really available, the Commission said.About one in four websites also misled consumers by saying there were only a limited number of seats or rooms left at a certain price, when this often only applied to the website in question. The Commission did not name any of the companies surveyed in its screening of websites across the bloc in october 2016.The EU executive said national authorities would contact the websites that were in breach of EU consumer protection rules and could take legal action if the companies failed to improve. The Commission has coordinated similar ‘sweep’ actions in the past, such as into airlines, online tickets and consumer credit, to ensure consumers are being protected.

First Britain to China direct train sets off on 7,500-mile journey by Tahnee Wright A DB Cargo locomotive left the DP World London Gateway rail terminal on Monday morning at 10.35am carrying vitamins, baby products and other goods as Britain seeks to burnish its global trading credentials for when it leaves the European Union. After passing through the Channel Tunnel into France and on to Belgium, the train will call in Duisburg, Germany before InterRail pull the cargo through Poland, Belarus, Russia, Kazahkstan and arrive at Yiwu, eastern China on April 27. The 7,500-mile journey from eastern England to eastern China will take just over two weeks, around half the time needed for the equivalent journey by sea freight and will cost much less than the equivalent journey by air freight. It is departing almost three months after the first freight service from China to the UK arrived in east London. The service is part of China’s One Belt, One Road programme of reviving the ancient Silk Road trading routes with the West, initially created more than 2,000 years ago. Britain is seeking to enhance its trade links with the rest of the world as it prepares to leave the EU in two years' time and DP World

chief executive Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem said the first freight service from the UK to China is a ‘significant trade occasion’. He went on: ‘DP World London Gateway, one of the UK’s largest logistics hubs, is designed and developed to ensure products can be both imported and exported from the UK via ship or train in a faster, safer and more reliable way than ever before. ‘We look forward to enabling and facilitating more trade between the UK, China and the whole world.’ International trade minister Greg Hands said: ‘This new rail link with China is another boost for global Britain, following the ancient Silk Road trade route to carry British products around the world. ‘It shows the huge global demand for quality UK goods and is a great step for DP World’s £1.5 billion London Gateway port as

it also welcomes its first regular container ships from Asia.’ Run by Yiwu Timex Industrial Investment, the Yiwu-London freight service makes London the 15th European city to have a direct rail link with China after the 2013 unveiling of the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

‘This is the first export train and just the start of a regular direct service between the UK and China,’ Xubin Feng, chairman of Yiwu Timex Industrial Investment Co., said. ‘We have great faith in the UK as an export nation and rail provides an excellent alternative for moving large volumes of goods over long distances faster.’

Uber banned in Italy A court blocked the use of smart phone apps for uber cars in Italy on Friday, ruling that they constituted unfair competition. the court said uber could not use its Black, Lux, Suv, X , XL, Select and Van phone applications nor could it promote or advertise its services in Italy, a court document showed. The court ruled in favour of a suit filed by Italy's major traditional taxi associations. Uber's Italy unit said in a statement they were ‘shocked’ by the decision and that they would appeal.

€4,800 raised for APAC and the ISVH Bombers by Tahnee Wright The Inn on the Green in Javea provided the perfect location for the Asociacion Protectora Amigos del Caballo (APAC) and the ISVh Bombers Voluntaries sellout charity barbecue and car raffle on Sunday April 9. The event raised an outstanding €4,800, to be split between APAC and the ISVh Bombers. Guests returned home fat and full after enjoying the ‘excellent’ barbecue spread of burgers, sausages, chicken, coleslaw, quiche, baked potatoes and salad. It was a gentleman called Barry’s lucky day as his name was picked out of the hat as winner of the Chevrolet Matiz raffle prize. A smaller raffle was also held which raised another €140. APAC have extended a special thank you to Pat McCue for her ‘relentless hard work and support’ without whom they would be ‘lost’! Also, Stephanie Paige Cooper who painted the ‘White horses’ painting which sold for €80. Stephanie donated the proceeds to APAC and presented them with another of her works of art – a painting of APAC mule and mascot Chyla.

APAC also extend their thanks to The Salamandra Charity Shop, heaven Boutique, VillaMia estate Agents, Javea AutoSales, Golden Leaves International and Blue Communications for sponsoring the Chevrolet Matiz. APAC is a Spanish horse charity, set up to defend and protect horses and offer them a second chance through adoption. Based in La Xara – run entirely by volunteers and funded solely by donations – APAC save horses from poor living conditions and distress, an issue ever more prevalent throughout Spain due to the economic crisis. The horses APAC rescue are:

• Older horses who need to retire from working in riding schools – with bad legs and having served their purpose, they are no longer needed by the school. • Horses whose owners have fallen on hard times and cannot provide the food and care needed. • Many horses who are neglected, left in stalls on private land to starve to death, unseen by the public. APAC aims to rehabilitate the horses, easing them into a new life of relaxation, freedom of a paddock and lots of food. For more information contact apacprotectora@gmail.com.

Giving to those who need it most in Gandia by Tahnee Wright The Franciscan shelter for Men at Palma de Gandia provides a home and nursing care for around 65 homeless men, many of whom suffer from mental or physical illness, some of whom are terminally ill. These men would otherwise be on the streets and unlikely to survive without this special care. admission is solely on the basis of need and all nationalities and religions are accepted. The hospice is funded entirely by charitable donations, with no state aid or official grants. Three Franciscan Brothers, (hermano Guillermo, hermano Pepe and hermano Martin) assisted by local volunteers, care for the residents around the clock The Franciscans need money and donations on a regular basis to continue their work in the hospice. The needs are quite specific: Clothing (all sizes – new or secondhand): Track suits, particularly bottoms (preferably non-iron), t-shirts, underwear, soft pyjamas and socks (not white). Bedding for 90cm beds: Plastic mattress protectors, flat sheets and

fitted under sheets with (preferably) matching pillowcases (flannel or brushed cotton), blankets (warm and washable). Toiletries, both opened and part used are accepted: Disposable razors, shaving foam, shampoo, shower gel and skin creams. Household: Bath towels (not white), bleach, toilet paper, washing-up liquid and large bin-bags. The hospice can always use long life milk, pasta and a lot of cheese and olive oil. The volunteers of the hospice enjoy hosting fundraising events, most recently rais-

ing over €1,000 to help towards the hospice’s electric bill and visiting the hospice to help where required – we hear that the residents especially like it when the British cook lunch on a saturday for the meat and potatoes!

Javea-based Happy Freuds hit the hot spot LocaL young multinational band will perform at the MontgoRock Festival. by Tahnee Wright Javea was quite literally ‘rocking’ this weekend as the final of the emerging bands of the Marina alta competition took place, with four local bands battling it out at Plaza Portal del Clot. The competition, now in its second year and organised by the Youth Department of the City of Javea, offers participants the chance to perform at the MontgoRock Festival – which takes places in Javea the weekend of May 12 – May 13 - alongside icons such as Leiva, MClan and La Fuga. Happy Freuds, the Javea-based multi-national band formed of Teo and victor Holmstrom (swedish), Jack Hunter (english) and sergio Canadas (spanish) and the only band playing only english music, claimed the crown in what was a truly admirable effort given the technical problems they encountered. RTN caught up with the guys after their victorious win to congratulate them and find out what’s on the horizon for 2017: RTN: Congratulations! Did winning come as a shock to you on Saturday night? Teo (lead guitar and lead vocals) - ‘Of course!

with us being quite young and maybe not to everyone's taste, I was led to believe our chances were slim. This was actually a good thing as it made me forget we were competing and focus on enjoying the concert more.’ Victor (drums) - ‘Yes, a massive shock!’ Jack (bass and lead vocals) - ‘It came as a massive shock seeing as we were the only band playing only english music and we experienced a few technical problems during the gig (microphone not working and broken kick drum pedal).’ Sergio (2nd guitar/ rhythm guitar) - ‘Truthfully, we did not expect to win. The other three bands are very good and have a lot of experience… but, we did the best we could and we won! It was very exciting.’ RTN: What are you looking forward to most about performing at MontgoRock? Sergio - ‘It will be great to play on stage with such a big audience, especially as we normally play in bars or pubs.’ Teo - ‘The fact it's our first festival. I can only imagine what a thousand people looks like from a stage but in a month, I'll actually know!’ Victor - ‘Being able to perform in front of a big au-

Truthfully, we did not expect to win. The other three bands are very good and have a lot of experience… but, we did the best we could and we won! It was very exciting! dience of people who have not seen us play yet.’ Jack - ‘Playing for a big audience. we've only ever had a relatively small crowd watching’. RTN - What do you feel are the biggest challenges you face as a young emerging band on the Marina Alta? Jack - ‘The fact that very few people support live music (even less so if it's classic 70s rock). It's hard to play and remain motivated to continue when the only person cheering you on is your mum.’ Sergio - ‘It has been a challenge to compete against other bands who have so much more experience than us.’ Victor - ‘I think the biggest challenge is competing against some big bands who have played for many years and are more well known.’ Teo - ‘Getting the time to practice and get new material rehearsed. since not all of us live in Javea permanently, we only have the weekends and even then work, school and other events can get in the way - so getting us all together can be tricky.’ RTN - What do you feel differentiates you from other local bands? Teo - ‘Our music choice/ our manner of performing. we often have small sections that

are improvised where we need to communicate a lot to play tight. since we don't really care about specific genres, we pick whatever we think suits us rather than what people might be expecting.’ Victor - ‘we are a lot younger than the normal bands in our area and we don't always play the kind of music people would expect here.’ Sergio - ‘we are relatively unique in that there aren’t many young bands playing rock music from the 70s. Jack - ‘Our youth and the fact we aren't your typical karaoke band. we're trying to find our own sound and play songs we think are great, not pop songs from the charts.’ RTN - What are your plans music-wise for the remainder of 2017? Victor - ‘Keep on playing, keep on practicing, ite more songs and stay active.’ Sergio - ‘Personally, in 2017 I want to improve on the guitar to be able to contribute a variety of sounds to the group and to create a better band.’ Jack - ‘Keep playing - hopefully bigger stages, bigger gigs and draw a lot of attention to Happy Freuds.’ Teo - ‘In 2017, I turn 18 and will have finished my studies. I'll be able to devote all of my time to music meaning more rehearsals, projects and gigs. I won't be restricted by time nor by transport which is very exciting!’ Check Happy Freuds out on social media https://www.facebook.com/HappyFreuds/ - here you will find links to videos, their soundCloud profile etc.

Javea kids get creative with food

by Tahnee Wright Last week saw schoolchildren from Javea participating in the annual ‘Culinart’ intiative, organised by the Department of education combining both healthy cooking and artistic workshops. the initiative - in its third year – was coordinated by Beatriz Rico with collaboration from local chefs Josep Codina and Quique Garcia. this year, the motto was ‘Play Fish’ and students participated in a masterclass in which they learnt to prepare a fish and fruit ceviche and the art of gy-

otaku (stamping of fish with ink). Municipal archaeologist, Ximo Bolufer also walked the students through the history of the Cova del barranc de Migdia in the soler Blasco Museum.

some of the workshops even proved popular with those a little older than school age, as Councilor for education, Montse Villaverde and Javea Mayor, Jose Chulvi also attended.

Pedreguer associations receive €100,000 Of the Municipal Budget for 2017, the Council of Pedreguer has allocated a total of €105,342 to its local associations. Pedreguer has been recognised at regional level for its efforts and the Council hopes that the initiative will encourage the local associations to the benefit of its residents and neighbours. the associations granted funds include cultural (€66,300) and social (€9,100) groups, sports teams (€19,052) and non-profit organisations (approx. €11,000). the funds are designed to provide material resources, pay for the hiring of physical space and for member benefits such as trail parking. Mayor of Pedreguer Sergi ferrus, in presenting the initiative said ‘the dynamism of the associations of the people of Pedreguer is distinctive and should be preserved as a sign of vitality, solidarity and civic involvement.’ ‘therefore,’ he added, ‘whilst the city has allocated more than €100,000 to support the associations – a considerable amount – this is perfectly reasonable when you consider the large number of activities and campaigns the associations of Pedreguer develop throughout the year.’

WhatsApp service for Benissa tourists In a campaign to modernise the communication channels for tourists and visitors to the municipality, Benissa Tourist Office recently unveiled its new WhatsApp service. Tourists and visitors can now request information via WhatsApp and the service opening hours will coincide with the opening hours of the tourist office in the town. The WhatsApp number is (+34) 627 307 511.

A ‘den’ for young people in Benissa More than 20 young people of Benissa responded to the offer of the regidoria de Joventut (Youth Council) to decide on the use of a newly allocated space for boys and girls aged 12 and over. ‘El Cau’ (translated to ‘The Den’) comprises a large room located in the basement of Casal del Jove and the city invited those who would use the facility to take charge of its governance. Carol Ivars, Councillor for Youth, was very satisfied with the response – ‘for years now, young people aged 12 years and over have been limited as to where to spend their free time – and from this gap, was born the idea of The Den’ ‘The Den initiative sees the council offering support to young people – with the opportunity to self-manage the facility and turn into what young people want, making educated and responsible choices.’ ‘users of the facility will be responsable for opening and closing it, cleaning it and decorating it.’ The initiative will be developed across the Easter period and the Council have already received serveral ideas and requests from the young people - such as the provision of cooking and photography courses, a football table and board and card games.

A quarter of Brits still in touch with their first kiss Almost A quarter of British adults are still in touch with the person they shared their FIRst kiss with, but there is a very good chance their partner does not know about it - according to new research. by Tahnee Wright ReseaRcheRs suRveyed people in relationships and discovered 23 per cent are still in contact with their first flame, with 24 per cent keeping in touch openly via social media. however, a more secretive 20 per cent admitted their other half knows absolutely nothing about communications with an old flame – with one in ten preferring to talk privately to former lovers via email, text or Whatsapp. The poll of 2,000 adults by lip care gel brand, lipivir, found that the average Brit has kissed seven people in the past that their partner knows absolutely nothing about. a further 23 per cent say they have friends in their current social circle who they have got up close and personal with in the past – but their current partner is unaware anything happened between them. Of the married respondents, there were TWO people at their wedding who they have kissed (once or more in their past) - with the average Brit kissing 26 people in their lifetime.Psychologist donna dawson commented on the findings; ‘Our first meaningful kiss sets the template for all kisses to come, especially if we are highly attracted to that person. chemicals in the saliva of both kissers help the couple to bond even closer. ‘The experience will be further deepened by our own anticipation of it and all future romantic kisses will be compared

to it. This initial ‘bonding’ is never forgotten and neither is the person kissed. you may be in another relationship further down the line, but those lingering chemical bonds may tempt you to get back in touch.’ The study showed 53 per cent of Brits have kissed someone in their past they shouldn’t have, with a work colleague emerging as the person we’re most likely to have an illicit snog with (47 per cent), followed by 19 per cent of people who have kissed their partner’s best friend, while a further 10 per cent have kissed their boss. a shameless 2 per cent even admitted to kissing their mother or father in law while a further 45 per cent of people polled often think back fondly to their most perfect kiss. 19 per cent of Brits say they are still Facebook friends with their worst ever kiss, while five per cent say they are still with them. 66 per cent of those polled said that the kiss put them off being friends for life and no longer have anything to do with them. 42 per cent of people say they remember their worst ever kiss like it was yesterday, with 52 per cent of people saying it was horrendous because their partner was slobbery, while 33 per cent said they used too much tongue and 21 per cent said their date had bad breath. 26 per cent said fresh breath was essential, 20 per cent said having their faced touched was a massive turn on, while 19 per cent said it was important that their partner closed their

eyes and 17 per cent said soft skin was a must. a cold sore emerged as the number one thing to put Brits off kissing someone (75 per cent), followed by a runny nose (71 per cent), chapped lips 50 per cent and crooked teeth 36 per cent.

Between 20th March and 26th June 2017, existing customers of Liberty Seguros who take out a new home, car or life insurance policy, which is paid by direct debit, will be rewarded with 60€ Cashback directly to their bank account as long as it’s in the SEPA zone. However, new customers, taking out their first policy with the company, are not forgotten either. By taking out any of the aforementioned insurance covers they will get 40€ Cashback paid into their bank account in the SEPA zone, again if paid by direct debit! These offers are not for renewals or replacements and some minimum premiums apply. Liberty Seguros provides insurance not only for car, home, life, but also for pet, business and commercial, leisure like golf, marine, and personal injury; almost anything you may need to do with insurance from one leading company. The rainbow flag sends out a message of pride to millions Following the June 12, 2016 terrorist attack on the Pulse gay club in orlando, Florida, in which 49 people died, the rainbow flag was raised across the globe in tribute to the dead and injured. this prompted British human rights campaigner Peter tatchell to say: “i can't think of any other symbol that has such global recognition and adoption. Since the early 1990s it's become ubiquitous. it shows the diverse spectrum within the lgBt community, but also reflects the diverse spectrum of the wider community." Sadly, last week i learned that the man who created the original rainbow flag in 1978, artist gilbert Baker, died at the age of 65. i met gilbert in 1980 in his home city of San Francisco when he was 27 and i was just four years older. neither of us, at that time, had any inkling that his flag would have such an incredible impact on the world, nor that it would, in 2015, be included among the exhibits at SF’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) gay and gay-friendly establishments in every country in which the rights of lgBt communities are respected – from Spain to South Africa – proudly display the flag as a gesture of welcome, and it serves as a beacon to anyone travelling abroad in search of places where they know they will get a friendly reception. now here’s a word you’ve probably not heard before: vexillography. it’s the art of designing flags, and i’d never heard it until Baker told me with a wry smile that he was a vexillographist. later, he went on to design flags for countries and heads of state, including one for the King of Spain. Before the rainbow flag took off, the symbol adopted by the gay community was the pink triangle, appropriated from the nazis, who used it to identify gay people. A yellow star was used to mark Jews.

Baker said that because it had come “from such a horrible place of murder and holocaust and hitler we needed something beautiful, something from us. the rainbow is so perfect because it really fits our diversity in terms of race, gender, ages, all of those things. Plus, it’s a natural flag – it’s from the sky! And even though the rainbow has been used in other ways in vexillography, this use has now far eclipsed any other use.” But not everyone is happy about the use of the rainbow flag at gay events, and by businesses keen on attracting the “Pink Pound” or the “Dorothy Dollar”. Just last week, a very stupid American called Bryan Fischer, a Christian radio host for the American Family Association, tweeted: “worst example of cultural appropriation ever: lgBts stole the rainbow from god. it's his. he invented it. gen. 9:11-17. give it back.” well i have news for Fischer and hate-filled religious imbeciles like him. A talented, compassionate gay man, not some mythical god, conceived of the rainbow flag to combat bigotry and intolerance and we’re not going to give it back. eVeR!

Schoolboy crush I was nine years old, the place was whitley Park Junior school and I was in love with Miss Threapleton, one of the younger teachers. My memory is of a tall, willowy blond lady who, I had convinced myself, showed me extra special attention over all the other kids. I had made up my young mind that I would marry her at some point – probably when I was ten or eleven – but not really knowing what the heck that meant. The minds of infants are after all, simple uncomplicated things. at home my Mum had been about to throw away one of Dad’s jackets. It was an old thing but had patch pockets that could be cut around and would make excellent pouches in which I could keep important stuff - like my magnet, cigarette cards and conkers To one of these pockets I attached some rough string that I purloined from my Dad’s shed, and tied it to my elasticated snakes head belt. snakes head belts were an essential item of practically every schoolboy’s uniform in those days, and were crucial in order to keep up our baggy short grey pants somewhere just below rib cage level. They were also cheap items to buy. Then one day in the playground, the pouch must have dropped off without my noticing as I galloped around slapping my thigh and shooting bad guys as I attempted my Cisco Kid impersonation. when the bell sounded to mark the end of playtime and we had lined up in front of our respective class teachers in preparation to march off to lessons, Miss Threapleton who had been playground supervisor that day, inquired in a loud voice: “Has anyone lost a pocket?” Over two hundred kids and, worst of all, the full complement of teachers burst into raucous laughter. Unnecessary raucous laughter in my opinion. with bowed head and cringing with embarrassment, I crept out of line and retrieved my possession from my beloved who, I was crushed to observe, was rocking with barely suppressed mirth. Even Mr Luxton the headmaster, had removed his glasses and was dabbing at his eyes. would I ever live this humiliation down? with a crimson face I returned to my jeering class mates and made up my mind there and then that Miss Threapleton could go and whistle with regard to our future together. The wedding was definitely off.

Do you hate going to see your doctor? Do you hate being ill? Does the thought of going into hospital alarm you? Well I know how you feel because I’ve just done all of that. Falling down a flight of stone steps is not a good idea especially when you end up with a fractured thigh! However I am gradually recovering thanks to a team of dedicated people who are there to make quite sure your recovery is thorough and swift. Being admitted as a patient is a strange experience which, I’m sure most of you have endured for one reason or another. Let’s face it, hospital, any hospital throughout the world, is hardly home from home. From the moment you enter, those ghastly smells of medicine and disinfectant soon attack your nostrils and make you feel alienated from the comforting smells of your own home! My first ever experience of being pushed around on a trolley stretcher was hearing the rather posh voice of an English woman bellowing out: ‘HELLo!’ ‘HELLo’ every few minutes and throughout the night. Coupled with the sound of a young man yelling out the pain he was in I was beginning to think they had brought me to a lunatic asylum! But the nursing staff both male and female knew exactly how to deal with it, mainly with humour, which I found infectious.Hospitals, by their very nature are part of life’s drama. We see their stories played countless television soap out in operas, but they never project the real stress and tensions on the wards.

The Hospital of the Villa Joyosa Marina Baixa seems to me to be the perfect Spanish hospital. It’s efficient, clean, and, on the whole welcoming. you may remember that some years ago there was a television soap opera in the uK about nurses in a teaching hospital called ANGELS. Well Marina Baixa has plenty of its own angels, both male and female, and the noticeable advantages they have over their present day British counterparts are compassion and patience. For most of us, being admitted as an in-patient at a hospital for an operation is a traumatic experience. you need to be treated with care, understanding, and tolerance. Indifference to fear is quite simply unkind. But my experience of Spanish hospitals so far has taken that into account. Especially amongst the angels of Marina Baixa. Let me give you an example The day I was admitted for my operation I had to share a room with a British man who had come to Spain with his wife and daughters for a three week holiday. unfortunately he was taken seriously ill and was sadly diagnosed with terminal cancer told that it was too dangerous to fly home and that he would have to travel overland. The cost of sending an ambulance with full equipment from the uK was £10,000. Needless to say the nursing staff couldn’t contribute to such a large amount but every one of them made him feel that as soon as he got home he would make a full recovery, which in reality is very unlikely. The angels of Marina Baixa struggle hard to help every patient in their care, many of whom cannot speak their language. But one thing they all agree upon is that if you want your loved ones

to recover quickly then regular visits to them are essential. I was lucky because I had visitors practically every day, but it was heartbreaking to see some patients from the uK, lost in a land where very few people spoke their language, their eyes permanently fixed on the door waiting for a familiar face to appear. So please visit your loved ones and help the angels of Marina Baixa, and every other hospital throughout the land, to do the job to which they are so dedicated. What do you fear most about going into hospital in Spain? Let me know by writing to victorfpem@gmail.com

Welcome to the EUSSR I recall the occasion by well; that afternoon in 1983 Michael my wife and I had learned Walsh keyboardcosmetics@ that she was expecting. gmail.com As we had money worries and my wife was past conventional child-bearing age we were apprehensive. Another anxiety was that the world stood on the brink of a nuclear Armageddon. The dead hand of the UssR gripped the throat of much of europe. My concern would have heightened further had I looked into the crystal ball. In 1983 the Baltic states were repressed soviet regimes. As the crystal ball’s mist cleared I see myself sitting at a dining table in a Riga hotel. The waiter’s name is sergei and his colleagues mostly Russian. europe then was divided by the Berlin wall and a razor wired frontier stretching thousands of kilometres. This wretched soviet frontline was controlled by minefields, anti-tank ditches, and sentry posts. As I gaze into my crystal ball I see my future wife, who is a soviet citizen. I see images of many friends in Russia, the Baltic states, Ukraine and Belarus. I could hardly be blamed for presuming that

world war III had been fought, the west occupied by the soviets, and I had gone over to the other side. My oracle now revealed thousands of refugees queuing to escape the west by appealing for asylum in Russia. If fortunate they would join nearly two million other refugees already in Russia having escaped grinding poverty in a washington DC controlled europe vassal state. This wretched Ukrainian eU financed Berlin wall is a place of minefields, anti-tank ditches, and sentry posts. Its purpose is to keep Ukrainians from fleeing to Russia. Fascinated, I see that Russia has forbidden the sending of relief to the destitute of the west. Fast forward to 2017, washington DC with its 1,050 worldwide bases constantly provokes wars of destruction, plunder and occupation.

The crystal ball reveals a deeply divided europe presided over by two Presidents neither of whom is elected. The eastern Bloc type nations of the eU are deeply divided. They face an uncertain future and their citizens are ruled by twenty or so unelected and nameless commissioners. In 2017 Premier Viktor Orban of Hungary offers sanctuary for western europeans alienated by the failed immigration policies of their political elites. This is not fantasy; it is the deeply disturbing reality. Consider the words of former soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev; “why is the eU trying to recreate the UssR?” His gloom is echoed by Komsomol Pravda journalist Zahar Prilepin: “The eU in the worst sense of the word is very much the new UssR.”

Don’t cross the Zebra!

Can someone enlighten me please. I am so confused. Where do we all stand on who has the right of way on a zebra crossing. When I stand on the side of a zebra crossing in the UK, the oncoming cars automatically are programmed to stop to let you cross. Here, it’s like the roundabouts on who has the right of way. I have even tried putting my toe on the crossing and have nearly been run over. and also the looks the drivers give you if you dare try and walk in front of them. It’s a nightmare. It’s like doing the Hokey Cokey Gillian Moraira

Are friends Electric? I have had a villa in Spain now for 12 years with virtually no problems. I have recently had a new electric meter fitted and can now not even boil a kettle without it cutting all my electricity. I have contacted someone to sort this out and have been told I have to dig up the road to the nearest meter box of Iberdrola’s choice and install new mains cables for them and then retarmac the road. Not only that but I have to have a new Iberdrola meter enclosure installed for them. all to be paid for by me. The cost to me is thousands. This surely cannot be correct. Ken Montemar

How much do you want the taxman to inherit from you? Many expats living abroad forget that in addition to being subject to inheritance tax in the country they now reside in, they are also still subject to UK inheritance tax on their worldwide assets. There are ways to reduce UK and Spanish inheritance tax for expats living in Spain. If you have money sitting in a bank account in Spain that takes you over the meagre allowances afforded to beneficiaries here in Spain, or the more generous (but still too low in my opinion) personal allowances in the UK, then its time you looked at moving some of this cash into a tax complaint investment bond. With regards to Spanish inheritance tax this product can help eliminate tax liabilities for your spouse or partner on first death both in Spain and in the UK. On second death if your beneficiaries are outside Spain, as long as the tax compliant bond is sited outside Spain they are only subject to their countries inheritance tax rules.

More and more people are being caught out by UK inheritance tax, so if your investments take you over your UK allowance and your beneficiaries are in the UK then there is the option to place the tax compliant bond in a Trust. In addition Trusts can avoid the need for probate and allow funds to be paid out on death. They can also ensure the right people get the right proportion of assets at the right time, helping with succession planning and wealth protection. Samsung ordered to pay huawei $11.6 million in patent case

a ChineSe court has ordered Samsung electronics's mainland subsidiaries to pay 80 million yuan ($11.60 million/ â‚Ź10.95 million) to huawei Technologies for patent infringement, the China firm's first victory against Samsung on its legal challenges over intellectual property. Three units of Samsung have been ordered by the Quanzhou intermediary Court to pay the sum for infringing a patent held by huawei Device Co Limited, the handset unit of huawei. The verdict is the first on several lawsuits of Huawei against the South Korean technology giant. Huawei filed lawsuits against Samsung in May in courts in China and the United States - the first by it against Samsung - claiming infringements of smartphone patents. Samsung subsequently countersued huawei in China for iP infringement. a spokesman for huawei said it welcomed the court's decision. Samsung said it will decide on the response to the court's decision after reviewing the ruling. huawei sued in Quanzhou court Samsung China investment Co Limited, as well as a unit in huizhou, a unit in Tianjin and two Chinese electronics companies for making and selling more than 20 kinds of Samsung smartphone and tablet products that it said infringed the patent. it sought compensation for the more than 30 million products that sold for $12.7 billion (â‚Ź11.99 million), including the Galaxy S7, according to the media report. The court ordered the five firms to stop infringing Huawei's copyrights and ordered the three Samsung units to pay the damage.

Indonesia poised for data centre growth As the third largest by data centre market among south-east Asia’s four principal economies and having both strong international cable connectivity and an active Internet exchange, Indonesia could be poised for further growth. A new report from BroadGroup suggests that the country offers potential, development space and an attractive local economy to overseas investors and enterprises. New facility build has been led so far by local companies, but overseas investment has also occurred notably by Equinix and NTT Communications. However, the market also confronts several challenges for data centres. Power developments have not been as fast, with infrastructure largely based on coal and although plans are in place to develop further significant clean power supply, this could take another four years or more to realise. Enterprise outsourcing in common with other Asian markets is underdeveloped which demonstrates there is much to go, but also reflects the stage of evolution in data centres in the country. ‘Indonesia is often mentioned as a promising market for data centre growth,’ commented Philip Low of BroadGroup. ‘It holds tremendous potential as demand and usage shifts from early reliance on local mobile driven data, to third party outsourcing with overseas enterprises which we will see over the next few years. The power issues will need to be resolved in the interim.’ The report suggests that Indonesia has many advantages for data centre growth which could yield a further 34 per cent in terms of space over the next two years. Significant advances in outsourcing may yet be driven at a faster rate as sheer demand overtakes sensitivities about data privacy and security.

currency

by

Kevin Wright Account Manager

Why do the rates I obtain for my currency exchange transfers differ from the ones I see on television and the internet? Who actually gets those rates? With so much focus on exchange rates in recent years, more and more clients are trying to track them via the multitude of different media platforms available. it is important to be aware, however, that currency rates are constantly changing and often printed media such as newspapers and magazines, being subject to print deadlines, are not able to show up to the minute rates. Generally, the rates seen on web sites, TV news programmes and Ceefax, tend to be mid-interbank rates for a particular currency pair. So, if we take Sterling v Euro, there will be clients trading Sterling into Euros and clients here in Spain, for example, trading Euros back to Sterling. The mid-range or Inter Bank rate, is a guide to the value of a particular currency pair at a given time,

irrespective of which currency in the pair is being bought or sold. Even large corporations trading huge sums are unable to access the quoted mid range price. It is also worth bearing in mind that currency markets are extremely fluid and can change very quickly, which is where currency companies such as moneycorp, can help their customers deal with potential market movements. Some web sites show the tourist rate. This is an indication of what you would receive changing money at a bureaux de change or high street bank and is usually related to travel money sold in the form of cash. The most effective way to keep a track on the trading rates applicable to your requirement, is by using a broker such as moneycorp. We endeavour to ensure that you are kept up to date with foreign exchange market movements

and help you to achieve a great rate of exchange. Moneycorp offer dealing in live spot rates meaning that when you agree the rate of exchange, the currency is booked immediately to be sure that you end up with the agreed rate.

For more information about how moneycorp can help with your currency exchange requirement and international payments, contact our Costa Blanca office on +34 965725755 or email kevin.wright@moneycorp.com.

legal Now that Brexit is definitely going to happen I am about becoming a Spanish national. Q thinking Can I do this? A YES - A British national can apply for Spanish nationality in the 4 following cases: 1. Spanish nationality from the moment of their birth. These include: - having a Spanish birth-father or birth-mother - born in Spain if one of their parents was born in Spain - those born in Spain of foreign parents if the legislation in their country of origin does not give the child any nationality - those born in Spain to unknown parents 2. Spanish nationality by residence. Any foreigner who has resided in Spain legally and continuously for at least 10 years can apply. However, there are certain exceptions. 3. Spanish nationality by choice is a valid option for those who: - are or have been subject to the parental

authority of a Spaniard - whose father / mother was of Spanish origin and born in Spain. - whose determination of parentage or birth in Spain takes place after becoming of age - who have been adopted after becoming of age 4. Spanish nationality for possession of state. The continued possession and use of Spanish nationality for at least 10 years, in good faith and based on a title registered at the Civil Registry, causes consolidation of nationality although the title annuls the original

Oliva La Safor Lodge gets quizzical On Thursday april 6, the Viva Espana restaurant in Oliva played host to a Quiz Lunch – organised by Oliva La safor Lodge for their members and guests – to raise funds for the Gandia Men’s refuge.

The evenT was very well attended, with almost 50 people congregating for what was a much-enjoyed afternoon. Several members gave very generously to the Gandia Men’s Refuge. Contributions to the collection included clothes, food and items for hygiene purposes. In addition to the collection, there were some excellent prizes to be won on the grand charity raffle, which raised €195. The Worshipful Master, Worshipful Brother Ian Skipper has chosen several charitable causes which he wishes the Lodge to support this year, one of which is to sponsor at least one underprivileged

child (and hopefully more) to attend the Masonic summer school. Last year the Province as a whole sponsored eighteen children and hopes to sponsor at the same amount, at least, this year. The quiz itself - organised by WBro Mike Botten – wasn’t as easy as some had first expected. The winners were delighted with their triumph and all agreed that the Lodge will hold similar events more often. If you would like to find out more about the charitable functions held by Oliva La Safor Lodge or enquire about freemasonry, please email prensa@glpvalencia.com.

Kenny, you make connection with Spirit seem very easy, but I keep failing and don’t seem to get what I ask for! Matts. V. Hi Matts! All professionals make their specialities look very easy, but don’t make any spiritual connection that you seek difficult, either. Before asking for what you want have you established any connection with Spirit before? Ask if you deserve, yes that’s clear, but maybe you should talk to Spirit a little more telling them your story before you ask again. But do ask. The reply can be felt in many ways, silence is often the most effective way of communicating, after all, and action will follow.

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

Strong energies all across the Cosmos are unearthing a multitude of dilemmas and negativity. However your intentions will be guided by your innermost energies that instinctively make light work of clearing up this debris throughout the Astrological year ahead of you.

Act like you mean business this week because the tried and tested methods haven’t worked so well for you. Showing the intensity of your need to be heard with a totally viable solution, that’s good all around, will be your saving grace. As Mars confronts Saturn and Mercury edges into Aries later this week, channels of communication open!

Three powerful actions of the Sun affect you utterly over the next few weeks. Focus this week on the conjunction with Uranus, bringing about big changes for you, and the Saturn trine midweek, activating minor irritating blocks! The Mercury conjunction brings clarity to a situation that is not getting any better, and which may even have to get worse.

The Sun enters this week sending a scattering of opportunity, and specifically illuminating a project under your belt which is lacking lustre and which now, more than ever, needs a guiding light. Venus sextiles with Mars to ensure a balanced programme of events and the prognosis is good if you can battle the savage and destructive egos too!

Mercury returns to deal with some unfinished business you have duly swept under the carpet to be dealt with another day. Bad words have been said by both parties but a reconciliation comes when a minor joint problem is solved and the right time comes to call a truce all around. Be aware, however, that somebody isn’t the friend you thought.

There are two ways ahead and the current decision has to be therefore yours and yours alone! The Sun is currently in conjunction with Uranus, Planet of innovation and enterprise; and is about to enter into the somewhat negativity of Aries, ruled by Mars. There should, or could be a peaceful solution but best of luck in finding it short term.

Do you go or do you stay? This is the vital question that needs to be addressed right now. Remember the true wisdom in that somethings will never ever change before you make your choice. Mercury conjuncts the Sun in Taurus, which serves to both illuminate and magnify just what is wrong but which appeals to your loving, caring nature too.

The Sun conjunction with Uranus sees you starting to think for yourself for a change. This is by no means selfish, but it is self assuring, and what you should be doing right now. Glimpses show you just what it is that you really want to do and the time is right to call all the shots and ensure that what comes next is the step up that you deserve.

Your current crabby attitude does you no favours whatsoever, especially since you are so well adapted to conservation and conciliation. Come out of that shell and realise that if you want to make an omelette then you have to break eggs! Though you would be advised to tread carefully, you’ll gain nothing in retreating into your shell to ruminate!

The dalliance between Mars and Saturn brings back the past and you will sniff that whiff of nostalgia as much comes back to you, good or bad. Saturn in wisdom knows your limits and Mars is stirring negativity within but you seem to be clinging to the rock that is your salvation right now. Have no regrets, you just did things the hard way!

All is very much at sixes or sevens this week and the upheaval upsets your delicate balance. It is both not what you deserve or that you need right now; but you do have to have your say, since silence at this time is inappropriate. Use your psychic senses to see you through as this in itself releases your wishes, hopes, and desires and it will save the day too!

Look to your opposing sign of Gemini to see the effect of delays to making your future plans. Recently a stranger has stepped up to be a friend and this has allowed you to see things very much differently, especially since they are offering to back your next move. Take time to see what’s really going on and what could be next if you choose it.

Hair do you do? Wella Professionals give indepth insight into the hair colouring habits of women across the UK. Hair colouring is a hot topic and as part of the Wella Professionals #stylistsdoitbetter campaign, to find out more about the growth of the colour market, the brand has issued ‘A Statement Of Colour’: a report that provides an in-depth insight into the hair colouring habits of women across the UK. Whether it’s to cover greys, experiment with pretty-as-a-picture pastels for guaranteed Instaappeal or simply to make hair look healthier; women on average are now colouring their hair once a month with 65 per cent crediting a professional hair colour as a massive confidence boost. DIY hair colour jobs are also booming, 94 per cent of women admit to home colouring their hair themselves, with a further four fifths revealing that it wasn’t just a one-off. Despite these high statistics, 76 per cent don’t think their efforts live up to the same standard as a salon service. More interesting statistics unveiled through A Statement of Colour revealed: - Over a year, women spend £138 (€161) on colouring their hair at home, compared to £156 (€182) in a salon, a mere difference of just £18 (€21) - or the cost equivalent of a couple menu del dias! - On average, most salon cut and colours now ring in at two hours, compared to one hour and 19 minutes for women to recreate the effects at home, without taking into consideration instruction manuals, multiple washes and post-colour conditioning treatments required. - 25% of women feel sexier after a professional colour treatment whereas only 9% of those that reach for the home hair colour feel sexy and only one in eight tend to be happy with the overall outcome. The professional hair care brand also enlisted the expertise of Dr. Graham Hole from The University of Sussex to help dissect the nation’s habits and rituals when it comes to psyche behind the salon experience. Dr. Graham Hole, says: ‘Hair plays a vital role in facial recognition; past research has shown that evaluations of attractiveness can be made after exposure to a face for as little as 13 milliseconds and that although judgements of attractiveness tend to be ‘holistic’, we could assess attractiveness solely on the external facial features, primarily the hair. It was found that 40 per cent of women actually do admit the first thing they notice about somebody else is their hair - it’s safe to say that hair is a key factor when it comes to others measuring how attractive we are.’

Most salon cut and colours now ring in at two hours

REVEALED: The health benefits of vacuuming, cleaning your car and mowing the lawn

as tHe days are getting longer and the temperatures are getting milder, many are pulling on their trainers and giving the pavement a good pounding or heading to their local Chinese market to purchase that puncture repair kit to get back on two wheels. If you are struggling with lack of motivation or even lack of time, all is not lost as everyday activities such as housework may be able to provide just as many physical benefits, while also supporting mental well-being.

In a new infographic, AXA PPP Healthcare has revealed the true benefits of doing typical household activities for an hour. Sorting the laundry can burn up to 200 calories, while mopping a dirty floor, vacuuming and briskly walking a dog provides almost the same result. Manually cleaning your own car - rather than taking it through the car wash - can counteract the sins in a portion of chips in the form of 250 calories. While cleaning windows will shift the same amount - or the

equivalent of two bags of crisps, research suggests. And mowing the lawn could cut 300 calories, while dusting down cupboards and tables could burn 120 calories. David Williams, from AXA PPP healthcare, said: 'Household chores such as hoovering, tidying and changing sheets all exert energy and are great all-round exercises. 'They can also be of great help in reducing the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other medical conditions.'

6 scents that mosquitoes hate

Mosquitoes have a very keen sense of smell. in fact, it’s the primary reason that they are drawn to humans and other animals as a blood source. The carbon dioxide and many of the fragrances we emit are irresistible to these annoying pests. Mosquitoes likewise find a variety of smells unappealing. These aromas can be used to keep mosquitoes at bay without the use of chemicals and other harsh deterrents. here are six common scents that repel mosquitoes: Citronella This is likely the first thing that comes to mind when you think about mosquito repelling scents. citronella oil, which comes from the lemongrass plant, is commonly used in commercial bug sprays and candles. It features a lemon-like citrusy scent that is irritating to mosquitoes, but wonderfully pleasant to people. Lemongrass can be planted outside your home as an attractive, yet effective repellent. Additionally, citronella oil can be applied directly on your skin or paired with other essential oils to make your own natural deterrent. euCalyptus Like citronella, eucalyptus has a powerful smell that interferes with mosquitoes’ delicate senses and can make it difficult for them to locate their food sources. The oil from these trees also repels other insects such as ticks, midges and sand flies.

While the presence of the plant itself will work as a repellent in your yard, the oil can be applied directly to the skin as well, but should be applied regularly for optimum protection. peppermint Minty fragrances are unpleasant to a mosquito’s keen senses. The mere presence of peppermint plants can ward off these pesky flying insects to some degree. You can also turn peppermint into a personal repellent by crushing the leaves and rubbing them on your skin. Mosquitoes won’t be able to tolerate your presence! additionally, if you do get a bug bite you will find that peppermint oil is effective at relieving itches. GarliC This member of the onion family has been used for many years as an edible repellent. When consumed, garlic’s active ingredient, allicin, interferes with our natural scent and masks us from mosquitoes. However, garlic can be used to deter mosquitoes even without eating it. Cut garlic cloves into slivers and scatter them around your outdoor living areas, or combine with oils and other liquid ingredients to make a repellent spray for your yard. Furthermore, you can blend garlic with essential oils to make a mosquito repellent spray for your body. Mosquitoes won’t be able to stand the unappealing smell. rosemary another multipurpose herb, rosemary can be used for many things other than seasoning. This aromatic plant works wonders when planted in your garden, easily tackling small mosquito

infestations. When barbecuing, place a few sprigs of rosemary on the grill to keep mosquitoes away as the scent wafts through the yard. In addition, rosemary can be infused into lotions or sprays to create simple repellents for your body. Basil This versatile plant isn’t simply a tasty herb used for seasoning your favourite Italian fare. It can also be used as a handy natural repellent. The essential oils contained in the basil plant emit a powerful aroma that is irritating to these bothersome biters. Take full advantage of basil’s repellent properties by growing it in your yard as well as creating homemade sprays from its essential oils.

Digging the 'no dig' garden For true gardeners and those who love spending their every waking hour pottering around their patch of ground, digging and tilling the soil is an integral and therapeutic part of their day. However for those who don't have much space, are time pressed, suffer from back problems, or maybe just have better things to do with their time, the idea of a 'No Dig' garden is a very attractive proposition. Basically it is gardening inside a big, sandbox-type frame of wood or other permanent material, built on top of the ground, so the condition of your current soil is unimportant. It consists of layering organic materials, just like a giant lasagna, to create a nutrient rich environment for your plants. The garden literally composts the materials while feeding the plants, making it ideal not only for vegetables, but also for flowers. This is organic gardening at its simplest and best and you can always expand it to suit your needs. Or build several garden beds in different shapes to add interest and variety to your garden. Their many benefits include, low maintenance, only take a few hours to build, are 'back friendly' and mirror nature to create a rich, organic environment for your plants. All the organic matter will help retain moisture, particularly in summer and the mulch will suppress weeds, prevent erosion, and keep the plant roots from getting too hot. Now, you're convinced a 'No Dig' garden is perfect for you. How do you go about creating one? You will need a sunny space and a flat surface. Beyond that, just add a few ingredients and you are on your way. Apart from the border, materials required include a stack of newspaper, bales of straw and hay or other coarse, organic material, animal manure and compost. Here is a step by step guide to building your garden: 1. Decide where you want your no-dig garden and make a border of bricks, logs, planks or rocks. Make it 45-60cm high for planting, harvesting and maintenance without bending. Keep in mind not to make it wider than you can easily reach into the garden to the halfway mark. 2. For the first layer, put down thick wads of wet newspaper to smother the weeds. Overlap the paper edges to stop the weeds coming through. 3. Now build up your no-dig garden with layers of organic material. Start with a 10cm layer of hay, followed by a thick (2cm) layer of some good organic fertilizer. If you do not have this sort of material available, sprinkle a layer of good commercial fertilizer (No need to go the full 2cm depth with

commercial material). Continue with a 20cm layer of straw, followed by another 2cm layer of fertilizer. 4. Keep alternating these layers until the garden is as high as you want it to be. The idea is to stack layers of fine and coarse compostable materials. You can add layers of whatever organic materials you have available. You could add shredded autumn leaves piled up over winter, old straw from a horse-stable, or kitchen scraps. After each layer, water lightly, and smell the goodness. Top off the garden with 10cm of compost. Use home grown compost, or buy a bag of it. 5. Top off the garden with 10cm of compost. Use home grown compost, or buy a bag of it. Place a heavy black plastic sheet over the top, held down with bricks. When you remove this

you will find you have a rich organic pile. Worms will quickly invade, breaking the organic material down into a nutrient rich medium, ideal for plant growth. The nutrient rich soil furthermore enables you to plant with less space in between plants. This type of garden can yield tremendous crops (4-6 times the amount of normal row planting), and is a great way to grow veggies organically. Beans, peas, capsicum, eggplant, tomato, lettuce, sweet corn, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and vine crops like melons and pumpkins will all thrive and try companion planting using plants such as marigolds to help reduce the incidence of pests and diseases. Organic gardening is all about a garden in tune with itself.

Dust down your decking the best ways to clean your decking. DeCKINg CAN look great in many gardens but it can also become grimy and dirty after the winter months. The surface of timber decking is exposed to the elements such as sunlight, rain and even snow and frost in the case of southern Spain this year. This exposure will inevitably lead to the deterioration of the colour of the decking, however, with some simple decking maintenance, the colour can be restored. It is best to follow the three-stage-process; clean, restore and protect. Here, we talk you through the best ways to clean your decking. There are several preparations available from DIY stores - go for the brand names, or a reputable DIY store’s own brand. Do not attempt to treat your deck or stain it without firstly cleaning it. An alternative is to use a weakened solution

of TSP (trisodium phosphate) which can be obtained from any good paint shop. Add a little washing-up liquid to ensure a deep penetration. Try a small area first and use as directed on the container. Do not use any chlorine based bleach, for whilst this will clean your decking of algae and mildew it will also break down the lignin in the timber – which holds the wood together! A weak solution of citric acid will help to ‘brighten up’ old greyed timbers and offers a non-hazardous way of cleaning your decking. Hydrogen peroxide – which also has other lightening uses – will do wonders for lightening old timbers and is good for the older darker deck timbers. It evaporates away, leaving no residues. Most fungal growth can be treated with a general garden fungicide. If you use a combined fungicide/

Decking can look great in many gardens

insecticide to clean your decking, then you can also kill off many ‘hidden’ insect pests lurking under the timber. This treatment does nothing to lighten the wood or to clean it of dirt – simply fungi/ mildew and insects. Whether fungal growth will occur will depend on materials used in the decking construction A jet washer can be used for cleaning

decking but it must not be a heavy duty one. Something smaller than 1500 psi with a wide fan jet will be suitable for most decking cleaning jobs. Anything more powerful will leave the timber with a ‘woolly’ finish, as it will destroy the wood fibres. The result will be a deck that is very difficult – if not impossible – to clean or to treat.

9 DIY deodorisers to have your home smelling fresh Eucalyptus The oil from eucalyptus plants is anti-bacterial and antifungal, therefore it’s great to use in places that are closed off and tend to get musty. Place a few branches in closets and other musty places in your home to deodorise the air and breathe more easily. Cotton balls Saturate a cotton ball with one of your favourite fragrances. Use essential oils such as lavender, lemon juice, or vanilla extract. Try placing one in your vacuum cleaner to have the scent expressed throughout the room while you clean. You can also put a wet cotton ball on a shelf in your fridge to act as a deodoriser. Lemons lemons can be used all over your home to help deodorise it. if you want your kitchen to have a lemon scent, cut a lemon in half and place it (cut side up) in a bowl of water and let them sit. Lemons are also a great aid for your fire. Throw some lemon peels directly into the flames to give your fire a fresh smell. or, if you have a wood-burner, place an enamelled cast-iron pot or bowl on top, fill with water, and add lemon, and/or orange peels, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and apple skins. Oranges oranges can be used in all the same ways that lemons are used to deodorise your home. They can also be with cloves to make pomanders. Pomanders have been used for centuries to fill small spaces with a delightful fragrance as well as to combat moths. They are also incredibly easy to make: Take a

bunch of cloves and stick them into an orange, covering the whole surface. Now suspend your pomander using a piece of string, twine, or monofilament fishing line inside a closet or cupboard, and it will keep the space smelling fresh for years. Vinegar if you’ve recently burned a steak - remove the lingering smoky odour by placing a shallow bowl about three-quarters full of white or cider vinegar in the room where the scent is strongest. Use several bowls if the smell permeates your entire home. The odour should be gone in less than a day. Coffee grounds Get rid of the smell of spoiled food after a freezer failure. Fill a couple of bowls with used or fresh coffee grounds and place them in the freezer overnight. For a flavoured-coffee scent, add a couple of drops of vanilla to the grounds. Spices What could be more welcoming than the smell of something good cooking? instead of using air fresheners, simply toss a handful of whole cloves or a cinnamon stick in a pot of water and keep it simmering on the stove for half an hour. Your house will naturally smell spicy good. Vanilla extract eliminate lingering smells in your home, fridge and microwave with vanilla. Wipe down the inside of the fridge with vanilla

extract. To prolong the fresh vanilla scent, soak a cotton ball or a piece of sponge with vanilla extract and leave it in the refrigerator. Is the odour of fish, or some other strong smell, lingering in your microwave? Pour a little vanilla extract in a bowl and microwave on high for one minute. Baking soda if you forgot about some food in the back of your fridge and the scent it left behind is overwhelming, baking soda can help. Place an open box in your fridge to neutralise bad smells.

Are Fjords Electric? Due to the Geography of much of Norway, and the difficulties in bridge building in many of the areas, the Ferry has been the standard means of transport for both foot and vehicle traffic in the country for many years. This creates it’s own problems with noxious fumes adn CO2 emissions through the roof. This is in the process of change with all electric Car and Passenger ferries being trialed now. Ampere is the name of the Electric Ferry that will soon be delivering low to zero emission transport through the beautiful Norwegian Fjords shortly. Ferry Company Fjord1 which operates many of the countries ferries has three fully electric “Amperes” on order, scheduled to begin operation in January 2018. Siemens, the holding company of the Ampere operation, says that as well as new all electric ferries, over 80 existing ferries in operation are suitable for conversion to fully electric or hybrid electrodiesel models. This could cut CO2 emissions in the country by a staggering 300,000 tonnes per year. As most Norwegian ferries are short haul they are ideally suited to all electric conversion.

Multi Maritime has designed three electric ferries for Fjord1

This could cut CO2 emissions in the country by a staggering 300,000 tonnes per year.

Oh Driver... Passengers in the UK are getting their first trial in a Driverless Fully Automated Shuttle Bus

A route in Greenwich London is trialing it’s first autonomous transport on a London route. The vehicle travels at 10mph and is fully computer controlled. As with Uber trials there is a human on board to take control or stop the vehicle just in case! Oxbotica has over 5000 travellers willing to participate in the trial. Seating for 4 people and with five cameras and 3 lasers, the shuttle will commute along it’s two mile journey along a riverside pedestrian pathway. Toot Toot....

Now that’s a dashboard... Tesla Model X SUV

An all electric SUV with a claimed 300 mile range, exhilarating performance, zero emissions and some great features. Love it or hate it, it is different. With an all electric power train, 20” alloy wheels, gull wing doors and that HUGE central touch screen system this is definately a “marmite” vehicle... Infotainment, navigation and even opening of doors can be accessed from the Living room sized centre console. Build quality is good, and a full 7 seat option is available. The main dashboard is digital also and many functions can be controlled from the steering wheel controls. A large panoramic windscreen extends up into the roof and front visibility is good. The gull wing doors give easy access to front and rear. Seating is all electrically adjustable and decent boot space makes this an ideal family vehicle. All wheel drive and air suspension give a very good ride quality. 0-60mph in a little over 5 seconds is incredible for a SUV weighing in at over two tonnes. Expensive to purchase but low running costs make this a vehicle well worth considering.

Jeeps in the Utah sand The Jeep and Mopar brands have once again teamed up to develop a variety of vehicles that will debut at the annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, this week. Now in its 51st year, the event is attended by thousands of die-hard offroad enthusiasts looking to enjoy a week of serious off-roading on some of the country’s most well-known and challenging trails. The Easter Jeep Safari consists of trail rides, mostly day long trips, departing from Moab Utah throughout the 9 day long event. Mopar - a parts and services outfit within the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group - was tasked with developing and constructing the vehicles from a range of available Jeep Performance Parts, and were briefed to keep 4x4 off-road performance in mind.

Among the 2017 class of Jeep-Mopar concepts are a Jeep Grand One - commissioned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ - and a Jeep Safari, tailor made for the arduous conditions of a desert landscape. The other vehicles heading out on the Moab event represent a Swiss Army knife of functions, including the Jeep Illuminator (named after its powerful lighting capabilities) and the Jeep Quicksand, a hot rod for petrolheads “who love the sand life” according to the American marque. “Jeep and Mopar have teamed up over 15 years to create unique, fun and highly capable concept vehicles for the popular Easter Jeep Safari in Moab,” said Mopar’s Pietro Gorlier. “These concept vehicles are a perfect example of how off-road enthusiasts can use Jeep Performance Parts to personalize and enhance the already outstanding Jeep capability, allowing them to face the toughest trails in the world.”

WOW!

A friend of mine recently bought a Mini Cooper S convertible. It looks great in black with all the extra trim and styling but at the end of the day it is just a Mini, right? I have driven the old Mini in years gone by and they were what they were. A quirky little car, underpowered and cramped. How wrong I am... The new Minis are built by BMW and have been completely redesigned and engineered. Build quality is solid and comfortable. Space is more than sufficient (My friend is a little on the chunky side but fits comfortably into the tasteful interior!) and driving it is a pleasure. A smooth powerful

engine twinned with a 6 speed transmission make driving this iconic car not only pleasurable but fun. Great performance and handling make you want to just keep on driving and driving just for the hell of it. The convertible roof will retract completely at the touch of a button, or just halfway like a giant sunroof. Wind noise is minimal with the roof either up or down and all the controls and instruments are close at hand. Available in a massive range of colour and custom variations, the big question is would I buy one? A big Fat yes

Daredevil flips over speeding BMW i8 sports car Fancy somersaulting over a car speeding toward you at 60mph? In a clip on youtube Oleg Sherstyachenko, 25, can be seen running towards the blue BMW, which was travelling at 60mph, before launching himself into the air and flipping over the car. The i8 was being driven by Russian social media star Amiran Sardarov, who looked visibly shaken following the unbelievable stunt. A slow-motion replay of the flip shows just how close the athlete came to clipping the speeding vehicle. Sherstyachenko, who hails from the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, has been practicing free-running, or parkour, from the age of 14 and has subsequently become something of an internet sensation. This latest performance will only add to his fame, as the clip went viral immediately after it was uploaded to social media. It is unclear whether Sardarov would have faced criminal charges if the stunt went wrong and he ended up hitting Sherstyachenko! Source Youtube AOL

UK Speeding fines to go as high as £2500 New UK laws will see fines of upto 175% of the culprits weekly wage. Higher income drivers will therefore be punished more severely. In a survey, almost half of people contacted believed this to be unfair. The maximum fine at present for a speeding offence is £1000, this is increasing to £2500 in an attempt to reduce speeding related incidents.

Step up to the Bali challenge

If you are the kind of person who always takes the elevator rather than the stairs, you'd best keep away from the Gran Hotel Bali on Benidorm's Poniente beach in a few Saturday's time. On Saturday May 13, at 5.00pm, a field of up to 400 runners will be taking part in the annual Subida Vertical, a timed race to the top of the 52 storey hotel, the tallest building on Europe's Mediterranean coast. The course is certainly not for the faint hearted or for anyone who gets out of breath going up the stairs to bed. Participants will race up the 52 floors, or more importantly, the 924 steps in the quickest possible time. The vertical running phenomenon began in the 1970's and perhaps the most famous landmark to hold an event is

the Empire State Building in New york, which in february this year celebrated it's 40 year anniversary. The Gran Hotel Bali race, now in its 14th year, is a relative newcomer in comparison, but it has certainly grown in popularity since the inaugural event in 2003 and the field is limited to a maximum of 400 competitors, who set off in groups of four at a time. Last year's winner of the men's event, Christian Reidl, from Germany, recorded the fastest time in the race's history, taking an impressively quick 4 minutes 20 seconds to reach the top. Meanwhile the record for the fastest time taken by a woman is held by Wafiya Benali, from Morocco, with a time of 5 minutes 44 seconds in 2010.

La Vila pay a visit to the dentist PLAyERS ANd officials, from La Vila Rugby Club visited one of their chief sponsors Clinica dental Sol in Calle Pizzaro Villayosa, last week to thank them for their support and sponsorship over the last 15 years. The team are on a well-earned break, having completed their league season unbeaten, in fact winning every match convincingly. They now enter the end of season quarter final play offs full of confidence and on a fine streak of form, as the top seeded team. In the two legged tie, they face Babyauto Zauratz away from home in Zauratz first on Sunday April 23, with a return home leg taking place in Villayosa the following weekend on Sunday April 30. Bruno forati head of Clinica del Sol and his team welcomed the la Vila players with a guided tour of their state of the art facility, which specialises in Implantology and orthodontics. In fact the Villayosa clinic have custom made some of the mouth guards the rugby players have worn throughout this exceptional season. The connection does not end there either, as one of the staff at Clinica Del Sol, Marta Alegra is a player for the La Vila Woman's Rugby team. Forati and the Clinic staff congratulated the players on their achievements so far, wished them luck for the quarter finals and expressed their hopes for seeing the team in the semi-finals in May.

first prize for male and female winners is â‚Ź300 euros, with the runners up and third place finishers receiving prize money of â‚Ź200 and â‚Ź100 respectively. All winners also receive a free night's stay in hotel. With a height of 210 metres (to the top of its antenna), the Gran Hotel Bali has become one of the most iconic buildings on the coast. Visible from many miles around, on its completion in 2002, the Bali was officially the tallest building in Spain, a record it held for four years until surpassed by the Torre Espacio in Madrid four years later. After several matches had been played the finals consisted of; the Singles competition David Bell (Monday Grp) against Malcolm Need (Weds Grp), and in the Pairs competition Eileen Haxon & P.C Davidson against Brian Bell & David Bearman.

The singles match turned out to be very exciting, with David leading most of the time, but Malcolm catching him up at the end of the allocated time, necessitating a playoff of one more end, which David won. the winning Pair consisted of Eileen haxon and PC. Congratulations to all of them, Gordon Kershaw and current U3A President, John hopwood, presented the winning cups and wine. the photos show these, and one of all participants and scorers.

After an excellent lunch, John thanked everyone who had made the day a memorable one and thanked all the participants, organisers and helpers for holding another excellent competition. David haxon introduced Don Roberts, who had first instigated the Bowls Groups and then gave a little talk about Pamela Kershaw as there are now a number of U3A members who never knew her or what she did. Even though the weather could have been a bit warmer for us, the whole day was a brilliant success.

A Spanish derby under the African Sunday

One Of the oldest rivalries in Spanish football was played out last week, in the small Gambian village of ndungu Kebbeh, when two of the countries oldest clubs met for the first time in 10 years. Sporting Gijon and fC Ovieda, from Asturias in northern Spain, were both founder members of the Spanish league in 1929 and have played many local derbies over the intervening years. However, they have played in different divisions since 2007 and this particular match was different for another reason. The two clubs did not field their normal star players. each team was actually made up of local village footballers, playing in the colours of the two famous Asturian cities. The home team, from ndunga Kebbeh play in the shirts of Oveida and the away side from Kuntaya, a village a few miles away along a dusty track wore the distinctive red and white stripes of Sporting. The game was organised by the charity Asturies por África (Asturias for Africa), which was founded in 2008. It was designed as a celebration, an occasion for the kids in a place where among other projects they built and run a nursery school. In addition, it was a way to generate the funds to supply safe water to the nearby village of Kerr Omar Manneh, a couple of kilometres from the Senegal border. The Gambia is the smallest country in mainland Africa, a strip less than 50km wide running from the Atlantic deep into Senegal either side of the river. A third of the 1.8m population are estimated to live below the poverty line. The aim of the match was to raise enough to build a solar-powered well and install 15 taps in the village, bringing clean, safe drinking water. Its cost: €14,000, an achievable target. Oscar Sainz, vice-president of the charity, explains everything. He is a familiar face; similar schemes have been set up across the Gambia. Manchester United’s Juan Mata, once an Oviedo youth

team player, is among the footballers supporting the project. The sprint-canoer Saúl Craviotto, a policeman in Gijón and an Olympic medallist in Beijing, London and Rio, twice winning gold, is there representing Sporting. The two clubs fully support the charity, promote the cause and provide full kits. Their players have recorded videos, led by Nacho Cases and Esteban. Fans raise money; the APARO, Oviedo’s association of supporters’ clubs, collected more than €450 before the league game against Girona days before. There are metal goalposts, but no net. Valencia basket stunned by Unica Malaga comeback Unica Malaga fought back from behind with a stunning 0-18 fourth-quarter charge to come back from a 13-point deficit against Valencia Basket last Wednesday and lift the 2016 7Days Eurocup Basketball Trophy. in an all Spanish Final before a noisy, sell-out crowd at the Fuente de San luis in Valencia city, the home side were the favourites to win the final game of the three match final. But Unicaja’s defense held Valencia to a disappointing 4 fourth-quarter points. The win also gives Unicaja a spot in the 2017-18 Turkish airlines Euroleague. Homegrown guard alberto Diaz paced Unicaja with 12 points and was chosen as MVP of the finals. Bojan Dubljevic paced Valencia with 16 points. Valencia outrebounded Unicaja 36-26, including 15 offensive boards, but suffered a poor shooting night, making just 12 of 33 two-point shots (36.4%) and 9 of 36 threes (25%). Unicaja claimed its first continental title in almost 16 years – since winning the Korac Cup title in 2001 – and became the fourth Spanish team to lift the trophy. They also became the first 7DAYS Eurocup newcomer to win the competition since Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem did it in 2004! Joan Plaza became the third coach to win multiple Eurocup titles. This season's 7Days Eurocup saw a change in format with the introduction of a Best-Of-Three match final, played across 7 days. Valencia won the first tie at home 68-62, but lost the second match in Malaga 71-79, setting up an exciting third, winner takes all final game. Valencia, on the back of an unbeaten run of 22 home games without defeat were the odds on favourites on the night and looked to be on their way to a famous victory until that stunning fourth quarter comeback from Unica. They must now pick themselves up and return to the Euro league where their next match is home tie against Barcelona on Sunday.

corner of the pitch. Gambian TV has come to film the game and there must be 500 people around the pitch, some wearing fake replica shirts. There’s a pitch invasion when the goals go in, a huge roar and celebrations from the players and the noisy spectators shouting Vamos Vamos oviedo or Sporting. After the 1-1 draw, the players and officials shake hands again, Sporting Gijón de Kuntaya and Real Oviedo de Ndungu Kebbeh, on a dusty West African field playing the “The derby that unites us,” for more information of the charity, visit theie facebook page AsturiesxAfrica.

Red card for FIFA IT APPEARS that FIFA, the body responsible for the governing of International football worldwide are not particularly successful at managing their own finances. Financial figures, released last week, reveal the Federation based in Switzerland, lost nearly 400 million euros in 2016 and is scheduled to lose close to 400 million euros in 2017. A deluge of legal costs relating to the corruption scandal which engulfed the organisation over the year, were thought to be the most significant reason for the huge deficit. Other reasons given by FIFA related to "ill-considered previous investments", thought to be related to discredited former President Sepp Blatter. Blatter's investments in a football museum and hotel in Zurich have proved unsuccessful so far, too, and are referred to as "ill-conceived". The governing body, which is still under criminal investigations in Switzerland and the United States, paid out nearly £50m to lawyers last year. FIFA, no strangers to controversy, have suffered financial problems for some time. The latest embarrassing deficit follows a loss of nearly £100m in 2015. However, in an effort to deflect from the figures, the organisation explained it forecasts a financial recovery in 2018, when Russia hosts the World Cup expecting to finish the four years since 2014 with an £80m profit. The governing body, which is still under criminal investigations in Switzerland and the United States, paid out nearly £50m to lawyers last year.
