by Andy Mansell Figures released earlier this week show the town’s hotels experienced a 90.7% occupancy in the first two weeks of the month, four points up on the same period last year, with a projection of 91.2% occupancy predicted for the rest of the month. distribution of the tourism market by nationality consolidates the uK as the first market

with 53.1%, while the spaniards were reduced to 34.7%, Belgians (3.2%), dutch (2.8%), eastern Bloc (2%) and Portuguese (1.8%) are the other significant markets. expressing concern regarding the drop in spanish visitors to the town, hotel association, Hosbec’s president antonio Mayor, said "there are worrying developments in the domestic market, owing to the rise in popular hosting platforms for apart-

ments and room stays.” He added that the situation is one of the prices to pay for Benidorm becoming such a popular good value destination, but on an optimistic note, he said “the overall results are still positive, because international tourism is responding to the repositioning of the Benidorm brand, therefore as a whole the entire brand strategy, private investment and promotion is giving very good results."

Security improved in and around Cova Tallada

by Tahnee Wright Montgo natural Park engineers were at work in the area surrounding the Cova tallada last week, covering the gaps of the cove’s roof with security mesh to prevent people falling into it after a 15-year-old boy did whilst taking a selfie and misjudging his footing a week prior. the Cova tallada receives an exceptionally high number of tourists, especially throughout the high summer season and last year, the number of hikers who had to be rescued was ‘uncountable’. the security mesh comes as one of the measures announced at the end of May after the governing board of the Montgo natural Park met to discuss how to increase security in and around the cove. other measures discussed included the monitoring of the Cova tallada by police and a footpath defined more clearly. Mayor of Denia Vicent grimalt suggested erecting signs along the footpath warning that those who suffer an accident will have to front the cost of the rescue if it is found to have been caused by carelessness. the governing board recently imposed restrictions on local water sport companies in regard to the number of visitors they can take to the Cova tallada on excursions/ how many excursions each day. the possibility of imposing similar restrictions on visitors by foot is also being studied.

Rambling Walkers take on the Pyrenees Rod Goodman, Chairman of the Rambling Walkers reports on the group’s most recent holiday: ‘To round off their walking season, 40 Rambling Walkers from the marina alta, travelled to ainsa in the foothills of the Pyrenees for a week of walking. The holiday was brilliantly organised by the husband and wife team of Julie (Group Secretary) and Mark (Treasurer) who were joined by Pancho and Mia, who lead some of the walks. Both couples spent several days reconnoitring the walks and ensured that everyone enjoyed safe rambling. In true Rambling Walkers style. two walks were offered each day, ranging from a gentle stroll to the ancient town of Ainsa and more energetic ridge walks in the Valle de Ordesa National Park of the Montagne Perdido (The Lost Mountain), where the goup visited dramatic waterfalls. They stayed at The Hotel Pena montanesa, and were impressed by the excellent facilities, the varied food and the friendly service with many members trying out the new spa and the large swimming pool with views of the mountains.’ The international, friendly group walks on alternate Thursdays from September through to May – the walks are followed by an optional social lunch in a local restaurant. Couple arrested in Gata with 427 marijuana plants by Tahnee Wright A 40-yeAr-old Spanish man and a 20-year-old French woman were arrested on drug trafficking offences in Gata last week after Guardia Civil officers found 427 marijuana plants in their home. The investigation first began just over three weeks ago after a report was filed with the Guardia Civil in el Verger regarding an unusual increase in visitors to a chalet bordering Gata de Gorgos. officers monitored the area and both the smell of marijuana that came from the chalet and the sound of the equipment inside was conspicuous. They also detected that the electricity being supplied to the chalet was illegally hooked up to the streetlights and called in an engineer who confirmed this was the case. once the necessary evidence had been collected, officers entered the chalet together with the Citizen Security Unit (USeCIA) of Calpe and found 427 marijuana plants, 27 heaters, 22 light transformers, six carbon filters, five air conditioners, fans, timers and humidity meters. Also found were 28 grams of cocaine, 300 grams of marijuana buds, elements for distribution including scales, plastic bags and seals, an assortment of anabolic steroids and another 38 tablets of unknown substance currently being tested. In the chalet, there were also two knuckledusters – considered a prohibited weapon, a bow with two metal arrows without a licence 44 ‘32 S & Wl’ cartridges and a large knife. The couple have been released pending trial.

Couple from Denia ‘brutally’ assaulted by two off-duty National Police officers A couple from Denia have spoken out about the ‘brutal’ assault they received at the hands of two off-duty national police officers. The revelation comes as the two unions serving the National police of Denia called for industrial action on Thursday to demand the dismissal of the Chief Inspector of the Denia police station, Antonio Cabeza for his ‘incapacity and inefficiency’. The victims, a lawyer and a semi-professional footballer, filed a complaint in the Court of Denia in January this year, reporting the police officers to have thrown the woman to the ground, grabbed her by the neck and slapped her - leaving her with bruises on her neck, chest, knee and back. The man suffered even more serious injuries, also thrown to the ground and kicked repeatedly – he was unable to work for 55 days. ‘They were extremely violent – they had been involved in an altercation and then turned their attention to us. I begged them to leave us in peace, but they attacked us brutally’, the woman told the Spanish press. She said they were helped by another off-duty national police officer and two members of the public – who ran towards them causing the assailants to flee the scene. ‘Luckily, they came to help us, otherwise the police officers who attacked us could have left us disabled or killed’. The witnesses identified the two assailants as national police officers. Speaking to the Spanish press, the victims expressed their surprise that the officers continue to work for the force, having not been suspended.

64 killed in Portugal forest fire by Tahnee Wright More than 1,000 firefighters finally extinguished the deadliest forest fire in Portugal's recent history on Wednesday, though blazes persisted in nearby central and other areas of the country. the main fire, which erupted last Saturday and spread with breath-taking speed, killed 64 people as they tried to flee in cars or were engulfed in flames in remote villages in a hilly region about 200 kilometres northeast of Lisbon. More than 150 people have been injured. Portuguese Prime Minister antonio Costa visited the affected area in Pedrogao Grande, the mountainous region about 200 kilometres northeast of Lisbon last Sunday, calling it the ‘biggest human tragedy in Portugal in living memory’. Police said a lightning strike on a tree probably caused the blaze on Saturday in a region hit by an intense heat wave and dry, gusty winds, which fanned the flames. But investigators said on Wednesday they would question the head of the country's volunteer firefighters, Jaime Marta Soares, who has said he suspects the fire had ‘criminal origins.’ the prime minister said the emergency services acted as fast as they could but acknowledged that efforts to alert the population might have been hindered because the blaze had ruined phone lines and communications towers. ‘What happened was cables and communications towers were destroyed by the fire, even their first replacements melted,’ he said. ‘But nothing compromised the firefighting efforts.’ the government declared three days of mourning and sent two army battalions to help the emergency services. the european Union said it would provide firefighting aircraft. France has offered three planes and Spain has sent

two, authorities said. Speaking in the Vatican, Pope Francis, who visited Portugal last month, mentioned the victims in his weekly address. ‘I am close to the dear people of Portugal, hit by a devastating fire which is raging in the forests around Pedrogao Grande, causing many victims and injuries. Let us pray in silence,’ he said. French President emmanuel Macron tweeted: ‘Solidarity with Portugal, hit by terrible fires. our thoughts are with victims. France makes its aid available to Portugal’. President Marcelo rebelo de Sousa visited the site at night and expressed his condolences. he said that ‘it was not possible to do more than what has been done’ in prevention and

responding to the fire. Some local residents said they had been left without firefighters for hours as their homes burnt. Many blamed poor forestry reserve planning and depopulation of remote villages that left many wooded areas untended. according to data from the european Forest Fire Information System, more than 40,000 hectares of Portugese forest has burnt, far more than the average of just under 10,000 hectares burnt by this time of the year during 2008-16. With weather forecasters predicting an unusually hot summer, authorities are concerned that there could be many more blazes during July and august when typically the biggest fires strike.

Van driver killed in crash caused by migrants' barrier in Calais

Av vAn vA n driver was killed in a crash caused by a makeshift barrier set up by migrants on a French motorway near the Channel port of Calais in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The van crashed into one of two lorries that had been stopped by the barrier at around 3.45am near Guemps, 12 kilometres east of Calais. The van, registered in Poland, burst into flames. nine Eritreans were found in one of the lorries and taken into police custody, questioned on suspicion of manslaughter. Roadblocks, often built from tyres or rocks, were regularly placed on the A16 motorway leading to the port of Calais before the ‘Jungle’ camp was dismantled in October. Migrants aimed to slow lorries down as they approached the port in the hope of climbing on board. Since the end of May, the practice has become common again. Several hundred migrants are living in the Calais area in poor conditions. Some 7,000 had lived at the Jungle camp before it was dismantled. Interior Minister Gérard Collomb announced at the beginning of the month that an extra 150 police and gendarmes would be sent to the area.

Thousands protest in Madrid for refugees by Tahnee Wright Several thouSand people marched in Madrid last weekend to demand that the Spanish government immediately fulfils its commitment to take in more than 17,000 refugees as part of a european relocation plan. the crowds chanted, ‘no human being is illegal’, as they walked in scorching heat through the centre of the capital, holding banners that read, ‘open the borders’, ‘Bridges, not walls’ and ‘enough with excuses, no more barriers’. last Saturday’s protest, organised by dozens of nGos, including uK-based rights group amnesty International, came just a few days before World refugee day was celebrated on tuesday. organisers, quoted by the Spanish press, said some 8,000-people attended the demonstration. the protest also comes as the deadline nears to relocate 160,000 refugees across europe under a solidarity plan put in place in 2015 to try to remedy the continent's biggest-ever refugee crisis and ease the burden on front-line states Italy and Greece. however, by the start of June, fewer than 20,000 refugees had been relocated.

Spain had pledged to take in more than 17,300 and has so far only welcomed just over 1,300, according to amnesty International. ‘Spain is doing absolutely nothing of what it should be doing, it's a disgrace for Spain and europe,’ Carlos diez, a 55year-old secondary school teacher at the protest, told the Spanish press. estrella Moran, secretary-general of the Spain Commission for refugee assistance (Cear), said the period for the first arrivals ends next month, while the sec-

ond period will run until September 26. ‘at the moment only 7.5 per cent of these persons have been accommodated,’ Moran told the associated Press news agency. ‘there are people in Greece who are living in inhumane conditions and unhealthy situations, there are people in turkey, in lebanon and Palestine who deserve a new life.’ In February, at least 160,000 people marched in Barcelona to demand the Spanish government fulfil its commitment to refugees.

Mourinho accused of €3.3m tax fraud in Spain SpaniSh proSecutorS have had filed a claim against Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on two counts of tax fraud in 2011 and 2012, when he managed Real Madrid. The Portuguese manager owes Spanish tax authorities €3.3 million, a Madrid prosecutor said in a statement on Tuesday, adding it had presented a claim to a local court. The announcement comes just a week after Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo had a lawsuit filed against him for allegedly defrauding Spanish authorities of €14.7 million in unpaid taxes between 2011 and 2014. Mourinho left Real Madrid in 2013 to manage English club Chelsea for a second spell before signing with Manchester United in 2016. Prosecutors said he had failed to declare revenues from his image rights in his Spanish income tax declarations from 2011 and 2012, ‘with the aim of obtaining illicit profits’. They said Mourinho had already settled a previous claim relating to his Spanish taxes, which resulted in a penalty of €1.15 million in 2014. But tax authorities later found that some of the information presented in that settlement was incorrect, the prosecutors said. Photo credit: Flickr A. Osipov

European court rules against Men who hid Russian ‘gay propaganda’ law cocaine in bags of rice arrested in Benissa

Anti-gay protesters try to tear a rainbow flag during an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community rally in central Moscow, Russia Photo credit: Reuters

by Tahnee Wright The european Court of human rights (eCthr) ruled on Tuesday that a russian law banning the promotion of homosexuality breaches european treaty rules on freedom of expression and is discriminatory against gay people. Three russian gay rights activists brought the case against the 2013 federal statute, widely known as the ‘gay propaganda’ law, after they were fined for holding banners to encourage acceptance of homosexuality between 2009 and 2012.

human rights observers argue that this law has been broadly applied to target and intimidate the LGBT community in russia. The eCthr concurred, arguing that its vague terminology allowed unlimited scope for abuse. The european Court of human rights was established by the european Convention on human rights - (formally the Convention for the protection of human rights and Fundamental Freedoms) an international treaty drafted by the Council of europe to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms in europe.

any person who feels his or her rights have been violated under the Convention by a state party can take a case to the Court. Judgments finding violations are binding on the States concerned and they are obliged to execute them. russia has had a strained relationship with the eCthr since they overruled a case decided by the russian Constitutional Court in 2012. In 2016, the eCthr ruled russia had violated the european Convention on human rights in all but six of its 228 judgments in russian cases.

Four SpaniSh men who hid cocaine in bags of rice were arrested last week as the Guardia Civil busted a drug trafficking operation in Benissa. The men, aged 53, 50, 48 and 37 were part of an organised group whereby one was the wholesaler, another was the small-scale supplier, another was working their ‘public relations’ and another sold the drug at street-level. The investigation was initiated in February after officers detected an increase in the sale of drugs across Benissa. Having gathered enough evidence, officers entered two houses – one owned by the wholesaler and the other owned by the small-scale supplier. In the first house, they found a fridge filled with bags of rice. Amongst the bags of rice – popularly used as a drying agent – was a 56.2-gram rock of pure cocaine and other weighing 35.2 grams. Officers also found 38 bags of cocaine - distributed in doses of one gram and 0.5 grams, four grams of hashish, materials for distribution (scales, bags and wire) and €1,717 in cash. In the second house, they found one 30.1-gram rock of pure cocaine, 59 grams of marijuana, three marijuana plants, materials for distribution and several mobile phones and computers. The small-scale supplier also had a gram of cocaine in his pocket ready for sale. The two home owners were detained by the Guardia Civil and the other two men were released on bail.

Student held prisoner in North Korea dies days after release An AmericAn university student held prisoner in north Korea for 17 months died on monday, just days after he was released from captivity in a coma. Otto Warmbier, 22, who was arrested in north Korea while visiting as a tourist, had been described by doctors caring for him last week as having extensive brain damage that left him in a state of ‘unresponsive wakefulness.’ ‘Unfortunately, the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the north Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today,’ the family said in a statement after Warmbier's death. The family said that Warmbier lapsed into a coma in march 2016, shortly after he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour in north Korea. The University of Virginia student and Ohio native was arrested, according to north Korean media, for trying to steal an item bearing a propaganda slogan. north Korea released Warmbier last week and said he was being freed ‘on humanitarian grounds’. Warmbiers father said last week that his son had been 'brutalised and terrorised by the Pyongyang government’ and that the family did not believe north Korea's story that his son had fallen into a coma after contracting botulism and being given a sleeping pill. Doctors who examined Warmbier after his release said there was no sign of botulism in his system. Secretary of State rex Tillerson said the United States holds north Korea accountable for Warmbier's ‘unjust imprisonment’ and demanded the release of three other U.S. citizens still held by Pyongyang - Korean-Americans Tony Kim, Kim Dong chul and Kim Hak Song.

Multi million euro facelift for Hotel Selomar by Andy Mansell One Of Benidorm’s iconic beachfront hotels has been bought by the Barcelo Hotel group in a 16 million euro deal. The derelict Hotel Selomar on Benidorm’s Levante beachfront is to receive a multi-million euro renovation, which will return it to its former four star glory. new owners, Barcelo Hotels, backed by the Hispania group, bought the abandoned building for 15.6 million euros a few days ago and have pledged to spend around the same amount on the facelift. The Selomar, originally built in 1973, offered 245 rooms across 8 floors and underwent a refurbishment in 1992. However, since closing its doors for the last time in 2007, the hotel gradually fell into disrepair, until a devasating fire, thought to have been started by squatters, gutted the building in October 2015. Since then, much speculation has surrounded the future of the unsightly burnt out building, as the owning Almodobar family were involved in their own dispute, which prevented any re-development. Another stumbling block has been an environmental law, which means any potential developer has been hindered by a ruling from the Costas organisation which governs construction on the coastline of Spain. Costas have declared that the front of the Selomar, in particular, the balconies, protrude too far out and are in breach of the Costal Law. The renovated building will have a completely new frontage, with smaller balconies that comply fully with the coastal ruling. Hispania, backed by billionaire investor George Soros, and Barcelo have been partners since 2015, through its subsidiary, Bay Hotels & Leisure and are currently listed as the biggest hotel group in Spain, with 38 establishments totaling 11,021 rooms.

The original four star Hotel Selomar opened its doors in 1973

U3A sail downstream an early 8.00am start, saw forty members of the U3a Marina Baixa travelled from albir to Cieza in Murcia last week. They were all dressed for the River Rafting experience and this year were given a bocadillo and drink at Cieza before setting off from there. after donning life jackets and helmets they clambered onto four rafts with 10 on each, everyone had to row and really work hard with instructions from a professional ‘skipper’ at the back. This was the fourth year the group have rafted and for a change they rowed from Cieza to Blanco, which is not exactly white water rafting but still great fun. There was plenty of splashing, colliding with the reeds on the side, areas where they could get out and swim and some 'bumpy' areas of river. The highlight were the two wiers, a medium one which everyone completed and a large one which some didn’t want to risk. Those who ‘dropped over’ said it was thrilling, as it actually looked almost slow motion and not scary at all. a coach with all seats covered in plastic collected the intrepid rafters and took them back to the start to gather clothes, shower and then go for dinner. Sadly, the restaurant they have used in the past was closed owing to the owner being sick with cancer. however the rafting company organised a very satisfying four course meal plus bread and drinks inside the market building (the stalls were closed for siesta). everyone thanked Rob for organising this popular event once again, with a resounding “Roll on next year!“

Peter Johnson (Coo Magnum Charity Productions) was very proud to present the teulada-Moraira Alzheimer’s society with a cheque for €6,400 last month, funds raised from a series of charity benefit concerts held in espai la senieta, Moraira, for the Alzheimer’s charity this spring. ‘this was a magnificent result and could not have been achieved but for the tremendous efforts of the Magnum Productions crew and the generosity of the Ayuntamiento of teulada-Moraira’ said Peter. the series of 5 concerts were all sell out events and indeed had something to appeal to all tastes, from rock and roll to blues and pop. the shows were very well produced and the tremendous reactions and generosity from the audiences proved this fact. Peter went on to say how pleased he was with this result and for all the help and assistance he as the promoter received from his team and the town hall. More concerts are planned for the benefit of the teulada-Moraira Alzheimer’s society (AFA) which will hopefully be run in conjunction with the local Lions club. D Day for Poniente Photos courtesy of David Stockton

by Andy Mansell Benidorm Became a war zone last weekend , when a reenactment of the World War Two normandy Landings took over Poniente beach. Two of the major turning point battles of the second world war were faithfully recreated by the Spanish historical society codex Bilex, using real and replica vehicles, armoury, weapons and uniformsand costumes from the 1940’s. The area around Parque d’elche resembled a military village, with german soldiers, nurses and civilians, lounging around in army tents, checking the horizon, with binoculars looking for invaiding allied ships. on Saturday evening two hundred enthusiasts, including , parachutists from the mendez Parada airforce school, took over a partitioned area of Poniente beach to recreate

the d day landings. German soldiers, bunkered down on the beach, threw replica hand brigades, as an allied landing craft dropped troops close to the shore. Smoke and gunfire, accompanied the ensuing battle, with some soldiers acting death scenes and other wounded soldiers being cared for by nurses. Paratroopers dropped perfectly from the sky to help the allied forces take on the encamped German troops in the noisy re-enactment. Later in the evening, a sound and light spectacular, using film techniques and music lit up the skyline and the event culminated on Sunday afternoon with a recreation of operation avalanche Salerno, which took place in italy. Throughout the whole weekend, crowds of sunbathing tourists wearing shorts, bikinis and bathing suits, watched in be-

musement as the battles took place a few hundred metres away. Some showed interest, taking photos and videos, whilst others took no notice at all, carrying on with their normal beach activities as if this was a normal day on the beach. meanwhile, wartime tunes and 1940’s music from bands and vocalists entertained the evening strollers walking along the beach. The codex Bilex group, who conduct historical re-enactments throughout the country, from periods as diverse as roman battles and napolean wars, declared the weekend a huge success and promised to return. one amused British holidaymaker, watching the soldiers tuck into food outside their tents said, “ i wonder if they’re eating wartime rations like powdered egg and spam?” he said with a wink, “They should come to hotel, we get it every morning for breakfast.”

MAFAS members visit Valencia

Prior to their final meeting before the summer break a group of 32 Marina Alta Fine Arts Society (MAFAS) members visited Valencia to learn more about a renowned Valencian family. Jose Antonio Benlliure tomas was born in 1832 and lived in a fishing village near Valencia. He was a painter and teacher of painting and encouraged the interest of his six children in the Arts from an early age. the most well-known of Jose’s six children were Jose Benlliure Gill who was a painter and his brother Mariano best known as a sculptor. Jose’s son Peppino was a painter in his father’s footsteps and showed great promise but died an early death. in 1957 Jose’s daughter Maria donated their family house to the City Council for a museum dedicated to the work of her father and brother which now celebrates the work of the whole Benlliure family. the museum comprises the living quarters typical of the mid-19th century, a garden and artist’s studio. Nearby is the Carmen Cultural Centre, former home to the Fine Arts Museum and a childhood haunt of the Benlliures and the Plaza del Carmen which houses a tribute to Mariano Benlliure in the form of a fountain. A short walk brought the group to the Palau de La Generalitat, the office and headquarters of the Valencia Communidad President. Normally open to the public only during fiestas and public holidays, the group had a guided tour of the building which houses, in addition to a splendid fireplace of Dante’s inferno by Mariano Benlliure, richly decorated ceilings and priceless works of art. Finally, the group arrived at the Bellas Artes, the Valencia Fine Arts Museum, for lunch and a look into the Mariano Benlliure gallery, with its sculptures of kings, queens and important members of the city including a very striking statue of Eugenie, Queen Victoria’s granddaughter on a horse and an impressive mausoleum crafted in memory of Valencia’s favourite 18th century writer Blasco ibanez. this was the first of many trips to be organised for the MAFAS group.

A delightful day out by Tahnee Wright The CosTa Blanca Yacht association (CBYa) held its first ToMs Cruise and Raft- Up Day last week. several members participated, sailing from the Real Club Nautico de Calpe (RCNC) to el Portet, Moraira, on four RCNC-owned ToM racing yachts. These 8.5 metre boats were designed by Giovanni Ceccerelli and built at the omega ship Yard in Moden, Italy, by Paolo Pizzo and Matep Plazzi from ‘Team Prada’. RCNC owns six ToMs, which are available to charter from their sailing Centre in Calpe. The ToMs were also joined by several privately-owned yachts and power boats for the raft-up and once out of the harbour, cut effortlessly through the water. The raft-up took place in the bay at el Portet and a picnic lunch aboard the yachts was enjoyed by all. The return trip to Calpe was equally memorable as the ToMs enjoyed a fast spinnaker run. The winds were favourable and the weather glorious for this first ToMs Cruise and Raft-up Day. The CBYa is looking forward to many more raft-up events in the future. The CBYa participates in regular regattas along the Costa Blanca throughout the year using both the ToMs and larger cruising yachts. There are activities organised at Les Basettes (hobie Cats and kayaks), cruiser charters out of Denia, as well as social raft-ups around Javea bay when motor craft are welcome to join in the fun. Whether you are an experienced sailor, or wanting to learn, there are plenty of opportunities to hone your skills. a nautical lecture is held once a month along with various other social events. Members meet on the third Monday evening of each month at the Club Nautico de Javea. The CBYa boasts an international membership, including Belgians, Brits, Dutch, Germans, Norwegians, americans, Canadians and spanish. owning a boat is not a prerequisite for membership, al-

The way I see it...

by

Harvey Mann

There has been a lot of procrastination with regard to the question ‘should Donald Trump be allowed a state visit to Britain?’ This would mean he would be wined and dined by the Queen and carriage ride through London, the highest accolade a visiting head of state could have. Jeremy Corbyn and most of the Labour Party don’t want the visit to happen, especially after Trumps recent tweets ridiculing London Mayor sadiq Khan over the last terrorist attack in London, although the Conservatives would be quite happy as future trade relations with the Us are now more important than ever. however Trumps spokesman is now saying Donald Trump will not be visiting Britain as yet, as this visit may cause demonstrations by the British public. Now I can disclose that Donald Trump did make a private visit to London to have lunch with me, yes Me. he was following instructions from his first wife Ivana who I had befriended while working in New York, however his visit was sometime before he had developed his Presidential aspirations. The restaurant we met at was called scribes below the offices of the Daily Mail and Mail on sunday of which I was associate editor in Derry street Kensington, London. some years earlier while working in New York for the Daily Mail, I met Ivana Trump, we became good friends after I had arranged special passes for her to attend royal ascot in Britain, and then put her picture on the cover of You Magazine in her ascot sunday best. Ivana in those days was the Queen of New York, she arranged all the parties, receptions and balls, just about everything that happened in the Big apple was organised by her and her private secretary. her private secretary had telephoned me “Donald Trump is in Paris, Ivana told him to hop over to London in his private jet and take you out to lunch” she said. Donald and Ivana had divorced on reasonably good terms, he had bestowed millions of dollars on her, they had a young daughter Ivanka, that Donald adored, Ivanka was a beautiful little girl who would kiss me on the cheek whenever I arrived at the Plaza hotel in New York that Donald owned and Ivana managed.” There will be four of you for lunch, Donald, his girlfriend Marla Marple’s and her mother Laura ann”, Marla was a former beauty queen and actress, she later married Donald but they divorced after 6 years. The lunch was unremarkable, a lot of chatter about New York and what they thought of London. Then Donald launched into his business mode, my concentration wavered as he spoke in self-glorification, I looked at the threesome across the table and what was at first remarkable was the typical large american style back combed hairstyles of Marla’s mother Laura, and Marla Marple’s, however Donald Trumps appeared even bigger, it looked as if a large piece of sage brushwood had blown in from a Windy City, maybe Kansas, and attached its self to Donald's head, the monstrosity appeared to have been back combed, up combed, down

combed and lacquered to within an inch of its life, a hair dressers nightmare, this is the first time I had seen it so close, three feet from me, frightening! The conversation, as I said was quite informal however I played close attention to Donald's attitude and body language, his manner was to change every few minutes, his sentences were not eloquent, he sometimes looked as if he was gloating when speaking about himself, other times he looked impertinent, sometimes threatening, other times pressurising, he often pursed his lips like a petulant child, and occasionally he would place the tip of his thumb against the tip of his index finger making a figure O to press home a point. Now this was just supposed to be a friendly getting to know you lunch, however Donald’s big business acumen of hotels and casinos was pushed down my throat, he is a business billionaire I grant him that, but without any underlying charm or wanting to ingratiate himself with you. When the lunch was over, Donald, Marla and her mother piled into their chauffeured rolls royce, I was sagging at the knees, wiped out, as if a steam roller had run me over. Donald Trump had come across like a bully trying to inflict his mantra and his brilliance on me. Infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me, that's the very funny line stuttered by Kenneth Williams in the film Carry on Cleo as he is stabbed to death In the roman senate, these days it could be a line from the pursed lips ut- tered by Donald Trump about the attempt in the senate to distable his Presidency. Donald's opponents and all but a few of his supporters, have been ganging up, his tweets are mostly nonsense his speeches are rubbish, there is a growing feeling with the american Trump voters that

Donald is going to sell them short as his policies, are leaking water. at this moment Donald is fighting on all fronts, after sacking his own appointed FBI Boss James Comey the 6ft 7inch giant Comey sat in front of the intelligence Committee of the house of represetatives judicial committee and told them what was said during his private meetings in the Oval Office with Trump. “Drop the investigations into the russian involvement” said Trump meaning the Presidential election, and then demanded a pledge of loyalty according to Comey’s evidence, then instructed Comey not to inquire into other accusations being levelled at Trump. The eX FBI boss believes that the three private meeting held in the Oval Office were taped by Trump and the committee is trying to get the tapes if they exist to verify Comy’s allegations. however Trump is becoming more beleaguered, as more Democrats and republicans, are angry at Trumps disrespectful attitude and unwillingness to comply with the Members of the senate some accuse him of being more Like Vladimir Putin, than Putin. Now congressmen from both the republicans and Democrats are thought to be sharpening their knives, as the senate demands the handing over the tapes if they exist as suggested by Trump to Comey, If there are tapes of the Trump, Comey discussions that took place in the Oval Office the senate committee want them, and pretty darn quick. Infamy, infamy they all have it in for him! I think if Trump survives this attempt by the senate in the cloak of Brutus to stab him in the back, will it be hail Trump or alas Trump.

Dr Strangelove of Europe by

Michael Walsh

keyboardcosmetics@ gmail.com

The specTre of a hungarian-born octogenarian ominously hovers over the european Union. Doyen of capitalist investors, George soros is on a mission to tear down europe’s defences. his aim is to reap a harvest of 550 million peoples in pursuit of his manic one-world agenda. having graduated from the London school of economics in 1954, soros became consumed with a passion for meddling in international currencies. The serial killer of nations, George soros first came to public notoriety when in september 1992 (Black Wednesday) he withdrew £1 billion from Britain’s financial markets. There was panic among speculators and Britain’s pension funds evaporated. The parasites of Threadneedle street took to their heels with their pinstriped pockets bulging with Britain’s hardearned reserves. The subsequent devaluation of the pound inspired a tsunami-like outflow of an already unstable currency. such personal financial success triggered the enigmatic soros to further acts of economic sabotage. In 1992 it is said the speculator pressured the Italian government to withdraw from the eU’s monetary system and clandestinely to sell him a mindboggling sum of Italian lire. As a consequence rome lost $48 billion. Italian political commentator, Mario sommossa; “George soros has a long record of

manipulating national currencies.” A man one bun short of a picnic should not ordinarily be a problem. If soros was a penniless person street-trolling with a placard he would be a figure of fun. The danger lays in the largesse the currency meddler showers over the european Union’s controlling elite; power corrupts absolutely. The investor’s socalled Open society Foundations finance incoming refugee

placements whilst campaigning for liberating drug sales. If successful, europeans, in a drug-induced stupor, will sleep walk into genocide. The eU’s on-going economic crisis provides a lucrative harvest for currency speculators like George soros. In the wake of fiscal upheaval Non-Government Organisations (NGO) proliferates. These are labelled ‘humanitarian activity’ but the Meistersinger of Wall street is hooked on dehumanising the world. hungarian prime Minister Viktor Mihály Orbán: “he (soros) must not be underestimated. he is a powerful billionaire of enormous determination who, when it comes to his interests, respects neither God nor man.” Financial leaders of many countries accuse soros of using his billions and speculative knowhow to downgrade currencies. Malaysian geopolitical analyst Matthew Maavak says soros could have had a hand in the 1997 Asian financial crisis. The aims of soros globalism are in perfect harmony with those of the Bolshevik-inspired comintern (communist International); globalism simply sounds better. Wherever foundations support the current influx of non-europeans you find George soros’s fingerprints. solution: Arrest corrupt politicians and place a warrant on the head of George soros.

Rites of passage by

Barry Duke

In my mid-teens I could barely wait for 1965, the year I’d hit 18 and be allowed to get a gun. This was in apartheid South Africa, where getting one’s first firearm was regarded as a rite of passage – but only if you were white, of course. The local plods issued me with a licence after my dad, an early victim of pester power, reluctantly signed a permission form. So off I went to buy a .22 calibre Italian Bernardelli that I carried in event of attacks by enormous spiders and redneck hippie-haters and homophobes. Within months of my acquiring the thing, it fell from my waistband in a cinema, hitting the floor with a loud thud. I felt around in the dark but couldn’t find it. “Well,” I thought, “once the lights go up I’ll locate it.” no such luck. It had vanished. Then I noticed that, to the left of my seat, was a wide, vertical metal post that would once have supported by a long-gone arm-rest. I had no choice but to tell the fleapit’s owner that I thought my pistol had gone down the tube. As a consequence, the next scheduled screening of How to murder your Wife had to be cancelled as we poked about with a wire coat hanger. An hour later we finally managed to hook it out, along with some vintage popcorn. The furious owner threw me off the premises and warned me never to darken his doorstep again. Months later, the firearm and I permanently parted company when I was on holiday in the coastal city of Durban. I placed it in the drawer of a bedside cabinet in my hotel before turning in, and awoke to discover that both gun and wallet had been nicked by a thief who had entered my room while I was sound asleep. Even more irritating was the fact that the intruder hadn’t bothered to steal the Gideon’s Bible on which they had rested. In my late 50s, I realised I was hurtling towards another rite of passage: the acquisition of a senior citizen’s bus pass. Glumly I wondered how time had contrived to pass so fast. I got the pass just after my 60th, but hardly ever used it as I was always belting around Brighton on a 600 cc Honda Hornet. I sold the bike before I moved to Spain over six years ago, and, rather than buy new wheels, chose instead to make use of the local Benidorm buses. I then discovered that folk over 65 can enjoy great savings by obtaining a tarjeta oro (gold card) from the city hall for a mere €4.00. I am certain that this, or similar schemes must exist in other areas of Spain. Last December, with far less satisfaction my gun licence gave me, I took possession of my shiny new gold card, put €20.00 worth of credit on it, then let loose a howl of rage when it died on the third day. I returned to the town hall to tell a clerk that it had simply stopped functioning, and was told to apply for a new one. Because bus fares here are so cheap I simply can’t be asked to go through the whole process again. But, hey, the thing is pretty good at removing the silver gunk from lottery scratch cards, and – who knows? – before my final rite of passage to total oblivion I might win back the €24.00 it cost me.

From plucking strings to knocking on wood

Nik and Lola in the Oakland Furniture Store

WHEN Nik PrEscott stopped at his favourite café in Fuengirola for a cup of coffee, he didn’t for a moment think that it would change his life. After spending 10 years in the royal Navy where he started to play guitar and then studied Jazz at Leeds college of Music before becoming a professional musician ending up at the Yamaha school of Music whilst earning living playing in different bands in the Uk including fun with tribute group Badness. He then decided that he wasn’t happy in the cold and wet north of England and moved over to spain accompanies by his guitar and started to earn a living as a musician in both spain and Portugal, but he eventually realised that many singers wanted to use full-on backing tracks rather than hire a guitarist or a band. it was an easy move to return to teaching as there was quite a demand for qualified musicians who had experience of working with the young and he soon settled down to an academic life in Fuengirola. During school holidays last year that he was enjoying his coffee overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean he fell by chance into a conversation with another customer who had a huge amount of paper work which intrigued him. that businessman was actually the Managing Director of oak Land Furniture spain who was just getting ready to launch the very popular furniture range in spain with the first showroom due to open in san Pedro de Alcantara. What had started as a friendly chat, unknown to him had turned into a job interview and he was amazed when after an hour of chatting he was suddenly invited to run the oak Land Furniture showroom. somewhat at a loss for words and not sure if this was a real offer, he asked why he would be suitable for a job that he had never undertaken before. the response was quickly written on a serviette, stating

simply; “you’re polite, not pushy, intelligent and a people’s person – we’ll teach you the rest!” it took 24 hours for Nik to decide that this was going to be a fantastic opportunity for him and if the MD of this much regarded company thought he was good enough to work for them, it was a great honour. Almost in a whirlwind he was sent to the Uk for full training about the ethos of the company and the huge range of product it has on offer before returning for the san Pedro showroom opening in october 2016.

I like to offer a friendly service and a personal service to the expats here in Spain who want quality product, I understand fully that customers don't like pushy salesman because I don't like them myself in just eight months, he has been involved in 900 successful sales but sees himself more as an adviser than a salesperson, wanting to ensure that customers obtain exactly what they need with the minimum of fuss and difficulty. Apart from the large showroom, the website plays an important role for the company which now offers furniture delivery across spain as well as Belgium, France, Germany, Holland and Portugal and in order to promote sales to spanish customers they are developing a spanish language site as

well as a sofa only site. Nik has also been joined in store by the bilingual Lola Lopez as he admits his spanish isn't the greatest and wants to ensure that spanish customers receive exactly the same service as he offers English speaking clients. they are looking forward to making the stores 1,000th and it is mooted that that customer will receive a very special surprise gift when the transaction is completed. “i left spain a musician and returned to spain as a wood furniture specialist" says Nik who obviously enjoys the work that he undertakes. When asked what the key to both his success and that of oak Land Furniture spain was, he is quick to say, without any hint of falsehood; "Well firstly it's the quality of the products and the brand, it's exceptional and the customers coming in store clearly see that. i'm no salesman but i'm now fully trained as a furniture specialist so all i have to do is advise when asked. “i like to offer a friendly service and a personal service to the expats here in spain who want quality product, i understand fully that customers don't like pushy salesman because i don't like them myself! “Each customer i like to think i give a full and helpful service understanding their needs and requirements on a personal basis. Whilst we are a global brand there's no reason why you can't give a full personal service when a customer comes to see me and that's exactly what i offer. “Every customer through the door has a requirement and at all times i hope i cater to their needs. i'm just Nik in the grand scale of things and give my full attention to everybody's requirements whether it be a single bedside cabinet to a full house furnish" so if you are looking for that personal service and quality solid oak furniture or a quality sofa Nik Prescott is the man to speak to! www.oaklandfurniturespain.com

money CNMV to investigate trades before Popular rescue 23rd-29th June

The NaTioNal Securities Market Commission (CNMV) - the Spanish government agency responsible for the financial regulation of the securities markets in Spain - is investigating if there is proof of insider trading in Banco Popular in the lead up to its bailout by Santander. ‘We will investigate if, in the days before the intervention in Banco Popular, there was privileged use of information and manipulations in the stock market,’ president of the CNMV Sebastian Albella said in an interview published by financial newspaper ‘Expansion’ on Wednesday. Banco Popular was acquired by Spain’s biggest bank - Santander in an overnight auction in early June for €1 after the European Central Bank warned it was on the verge of collapse. Santander has acquired 100 per cent of Banco Popular’s shares and debt and also plans its own capital increase worth €7 billion to cover the absorption. Banco Popular shares dropped almost 60 per cent in its last month of trading in the lead up to Santander's acquisition on June 7. Albella said the investigation would concentrate on moves on the stock market in the run up to the rescue. Deposit flight from Banco Popular in the weeks before its rescue has also led to calls for an investigation, though Albella noted that it wasn't within the CNMV's responsibility to investigate the withdrawals. European Central Bank supervisor Daniele Nouy was questioned in the European Parliament's economic affairs committee on Monday over a withdrawal of deposits from Banco Popular by local and regional authorities. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said on Tuesday that some institutional depositors withdrew their money from the bank after a credit rating downgrade.

If Jane were to pass away, her husband would be entitled to a 50% spouses pension with nothing going to her children. Pensions Freedoms allow Jane to leave her existing scheme and transfer to an HMRC recognised pension. Before March 9th 2017, we may have recommended an overseas scheme called a QROPS, but following the UK Spring budget, it is now more likely that we would recommend a UK based, FCA regulated pension plan called a SIPP. If you have specific questions as to why this advice has recently changed you can contact me directly on my details below. Having sent in an enquiry through Chorus, Jane has now been offered a transfer value of £238,000 to leave her Final Salary Pension. Jane can access this £238,000 flexibly from her 55th birthday rather than waiting to 65 and can leave her husband and children the full pot of money,

rather than a small spouse’s pension and nothing for her children.

legal Traffic fines Q A

23rd-29th June

I have received an unjustified traffic fine. What can I do about it? There are several ways to appeal: - online : visit the trafico’s website (DGT) ; REMEMBER you will need a digital identification certificate to do this. - Go in person to the traffic office (DGT) in the province were the fine was issued. -Have your lawyer dispute the fine on your behalf, especially if there are points on your license or if you have been called to court. -Appeal in writing and send the document to the DGT via the post office (recorded post). Some insurance companies will also dispute the fine on your behalf. Remember in Spain non-Spanish residents can be fined on the spot and the fine must be paid in full immediately. Spanish residents cannot be fined on the spot. Depending on the type of fine imposed you have between 20 and 30 days to appeal any fines that you believe to be unjustified and to request a refund and any points that may have been removed from you license to be reinstated . Basic forms of sentence building Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Jane Cronin

Many people who study Spanish get upset by those terrible things called verbs. They quickly discover that they are rather complicated, and they often find themselves sinking into a mire of grammatical terms that they don’t really understand. It is certainly true that verbs are more complicated in Spanish than in english, but they are understandable if we take them step by step. The first step is to be absolutely certain that we know what a verb is. Many of us have learnt quite correctly that they are “doing” words, such as “to run”, “to jump”, “to play” and so on. They can also include words that do not exactly express an action, but rather a kind of state, such as “to own”, “to have”, “to believe”, “to intend”. This form of the verb which in english usually starts with the word “to” is called the “infinitive”. It is the basic form of the verb before any changes are made to it. The reason why it is so important to learn verbs is because they are what make sense of a sentence. If I say something like “The boy the ball” I don’t make any sense. If I say “the boy hits, (or throws, or steals, or loses, or likes) the ball”, then I have made a meaningful sentence. “To hit”, “to throw”, “to steal”, “to lose” and “to like” are all verbs. now we are going to learn six verbs in Spanish to get us started. you will notice that all of them end in either “–ar”, “-er”, or “–ir.” all Spanish verbs have one of these three endings when they are in their “infinitive” form; that is the equivalent of the “to ...” form in english.

change in meaning, generally connected to “when” an action occurs and “who” is producing the action of the verb. However, not everyone learns early on that there is a great deal that can be done with verbs in their “infinitive” form. We can make simple sentences with them without any changes being made at all. In order to do this we are now going to learn three more words (they are also verbs but that doesn’t matter for now) which can combine with our infinitive verbs to make simple sentences. I call them “first person” words because they are words about “I”, and “I” in grammar is called the “first person”:

CAMBIAR (to change) BEBER (to drink) VIVIR (to live)

even at this stage you may well be able to add other words you already know to make the sentences more meaningful. For example:

HABLAR (to speak) VOLVER (to return) DORMIR (to sleep)

you may have learnt in your Spanish classes, or noticed for yourself, that the endings of Spanish verbs often alter. When this happens it is to produce a

QUIERO (I want) NECESITO (I need) PUEDO (I can) There is a separate word for “I” in Spanish which is “yo”, but when we are forming sentences we usually miss the word “yo” out, so that the one word “quiero” means “I want” and so on. We now already know enough to link these two words, that is, the “first person” word and the “infinitive” of the verb to make instant “minisentences”. For example: QUIERO VOLVER (I want to return) NECESITO DORMIR (I need to sleep) PUEDO HABLAR (I can speak) QUIERO VIVIR (I want to live) NECESITO BEBER (I need to drink) PUEDO CAMBIAR (I want to change)

NECESITO BEBER AGUA (I need to drink water) QUIERO DORMIR MUCHO (I want to sleep a lot) PUEDO CAMBIAR DINERO (I can change money).

If you try out some different combinations just with these words, you will already be well on the way to being able to form some very useful basic sentences. If you learn some more “infinitive” verbs, you can expand your range of possibilities even further. Here are six more to learn: TRABAJAR (to work) BAILAR (to dance) COMER (to eat)

Something else we should know about these infinitive verbs is that when they are pronounced, the “emphasis” or “beat” of the word falls onto the ending “ar”, “er”, “ir” which are shorter sounds than most english people assume. Remember as well that the “j” of trabajar has a throaty “h” sound, the second “c” in “cocinar” has a “th” sound and the “ai” of “bailar” is pronounced like the english word “I” or “eye”. These sounds are all dictated by specific rules of pronunciation which are rather difficult to explain in more detail in written form. now let’s see if you can create some more “minisentences” in Spanish. Here are some in english for you to think about. I want to work. I need to cook. I can dance. I need to learn Spanish. I want to eat more. I can open the door. I think it would be rather good for you to work these out for yourselves before next week, and also make up some more small sentences using the principles we have learnt. Remember that we are only talking in the first person “I” form at the moment. another thing you might have noticed is that in most cases the Spanish use fewer words to express the same idea, which is amazing when you think how much they like to speak!

The Midnight Bell

by Jack Higgins Sean Dillon returns for his twenty-second adventure in Jack Higgins’ The Midnight Bell, and he’s taking on the new leader of a well-known terrorist group. He calls himself the Master, but beyond that, not much is known about the new leader of al-Qaeda. He filled a position that was made available when former IRA assassin Sean Dillon killed the previous leader–and the one before him. This time, the new Master has a plan in place to make sure he doesn’t fall victim to a similar fate as his predecessors–kill Dillon before he can mount an offense. To kick off the well-plotted game of cat and mouse, the Master contacts Dillon to tease just how much al-Qaeda knows about him, other government officials, and their operations. The news is unsettling and leaves Dillon and company scrambling to find out more about the mysterious new leader of the Middle east’s second most dangerous terrorist group. That response, though, was just what the Master wanted, and he prepared for it in advance by setting a number of traps in place to catch Dillon and American intelligence agents offbalance. The plan works initially, but eventually Dillon realizes the game is afoot and makes a few daring plays himself. Dillon and his team eventually connect the death of an aging White House secretary, who is actually far more important than the vanilla title reveals, with events from around the world. That revelation is met with a new discovery that has Dillon racing against the clock to prevent a larger attack. also returning alongside Dillon are several characters from past books, including his niece, Hannah–who at only nineteen is surprisingly proficient with a number of firearms. Here’s the problem–well, several of them… even if readers are able to get past the unlikely, head-scratching scenario where a terrorist leader calls up the person he’s targeting to show off and brag about how much they know about him…and the gun-toting teenager who isn’t at all phased by violence…there’s still the info@bookworldpuertobanus.com www@bookworldpuertobanus.com | 952 816 084

issue of unbelievable dialogue. Higgins is a legend and has had a long and storied career, but, with all due respect to him, his latest offering is a mess. Some of the dialogue is downright cringe-worthy, and most of the new characters read like hollow, mannequin-like fill-ins who add nothing to the plot. It’s disappointing, really. To top it all off, the narrative bounces around randomly, making trying to follow the story a choppy, confusing experience. While longtime fans of this series will take solace in the fact that Sean Dillon is still very much the lethal, cocky operative they’ve come to love, there’s far more bad than good here. newcomers and casual thriller fans will struggle to get through The Midnight Bell‘s many downfalls, and those who do push through are rewarded with a lackluster, underwhelming ending to this mediocre plot.

Code Breaker

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 25 represents C and 19 represents V, so fill in C every time the figure 25 appears and V every time the figure 19 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

POSTBAG

Kenny, who was your most famous client? Bruno w. well, Bruno, I try and keep my client list confidential and all my clients have therefore the entitlement to have such anonymity. I have had several clients from European Royal Families and stars of Stage and Screen too. Government Ministers and Clergy and famous people from all walks of life. I do get asked this question a lot in radio and TV, interviews too..... and I think that it is a way that some people judge my abilities. As a true professional I treat all clients with the same dignity that they deserve! No comment!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week Financially it is time to take that gamble this week! Lay any groundwork that brings you stability, and allows you to get to where you need to be on an economical level by daring to boost your income!

As Mars trines Neptune there comes a distinctly psychic side to your actions since someone is in danger and you will be the person to warn them this week! Your strong perceptive energies see you quick off the mark to restore balance and equilibrium back, even though this involves outmanoeuvering those who are interfering with the truth.

That rather wonderful maverick energy is all around you right now. You have to admit that you do your very best work under pressure, and you love to get it right before you put your name to it. Mercury is in Gemini at the start of the week and it is a great time for financial or business ventures. Venus tops your solar chart too... so romance takes a step up.

Venus focusses on two actions this week as both Pluto and Saturn trine with the Goddess of Love in turn. Pluto emphasises on the depth of family love and tender care, whilst Saturn goes all out for business. Saturn rules Aquarius whilst Venus rules Libra; where Saturn is exalted. This week is all about justice and fairplay amidst loyalty!

A good time to set your sights on long term goals or your career as there is a lot of activity right now and there comes a time to get things moving on anything that involves self learning and education. The New Moon on the 23rd will boost anything that you have started, but may not have finished, and there are some inspiring results to be found!

The Mercury square on Jupiter heralds that your ideas may be rather wonderful, but that you also have to be practical to be of any use right now. However well intentioned you may be, common sense will have to prevail, and be careful who you trust right now. Saying the wrong thing to the wrong person would not be the way ahead!

Be careful what you say right now, you may live to regret to saying yes when no has to be the right answer. This time is the right time to take things further, however, and be very unafraid to ask for the support you may need to back you to the hilt! Have the courage of your conviction, believe more in yourself, go for gold, it’s what you want and deserve!

Focus on clearing out some of the clutter of your life in a significant way. Your mind may be saying yes to things that your heart has yet to process. For you the New Moon on the 23rd brings a new balance to work, rest and play and this is welcome as a significant improvement to your lifestyle. Make peace with yourself and lighten up! Now!

Mercury’s entry into your sign has speeded things up when it is possible you wanted to slow down. No worries! What affects you and the people immediately around you is what matters most right now. Have less global awareness and concentrate your energies on your inner emotions which are guiding you on nicely, and certainly in the right direction.

Trial and error comes along right now! You are beginning to attract the right people into your life at last. Taking charge of a project will bring you rewards when you least expect them, and you are more interested in developing your talents rather than being productive. Don’t be in a hurry, but leave any major decision until after the New Moon

A Venus and Mars aspect brings you to an increased motivation to restore and nurture whilst being both safe and sound. While Jupiter directs this month, your trusty leader, Neptune retrogrades; so you will see yourself winding up to slow down; but you have to! Make a dream plan more do-able, but do, do it! Improvement comes, but through toil!

Whilst the Sun and Mercury converge this week it will greatly influence your own personal energies. You are waiting for answers but also with these comes the opportunity to take on a deeper more fulfilling relationship or venture. It’s not selfish to want the best, for you and those whom you love, above all you deserve it now, more than ever.

Things are changing around you, and you would do best to tune into the feelings of others before they feel that they have to pressure you in any way. Someone is afraid that they have been misunderstood and once this is settled once and for all it leaves you stepping up to a very busy time of your life. Ceres opposes Saturn and sextiles with Kora!

Young Javea dancers win gold in international dance competition Seven dancerS from Studio 23 dance school in Javea have recently returned from the Hungarian town of Pecs where they competed in the 15th International dance Federation World championships. It was the first time Enmi-lou Hanney, Charlotte Tait, Lily Steele, Mairiann Robertson, Yasmin Parker, Annabel Kelley and Nina Eglington - all aged between 10 and 14 – have competed internationally and in the words of Studio 23 Director, Xenia Bragagnini, they did an ‘amazing’ job – coming first in the Folk category with their Irish soft shoe dance and bringing back gold to the Costa Blanca coastline. The International Dance Federation World Championships

takes place in a different country every year, with more than 20 countries and 2,000 dancers competing for the prestigious world titles in over 30 styles of dance. The girls also came 7th in the world for their modern dance and 18th in the duos category. Studio 23 opened 18 months ago and Xenia said: ‘for these amazing children – who only have been dancing for 18 months to come first in such a prestigious competition is incredible’. Xenia herself started dancing at the age of 3 at the Westminster School of Performing Arts every Saturday. By the age of 11 she knew she wanted to pursue a career in dance and successfully auditioned for the Barbara Speake Stage School.

At the age of 15 she was scouted to join the Ravenscourt Theatre School before going on to Westminster Kingsway to obtain her BTEC Diploma in musical theatre where she received a triple distinction. The International Dance Federation World Championships holds a special place in the heart of Xenia having represented the england dance squad for 8 years. Together with colleagues Rebecca, Sassy and Sean, Xenia offers a variety of classes at Studio 23 for both children and adults, including Singing, Ballet, Tap, Modern/ Jazz, Hip Hop/ Street, Irish, Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Lyrical, Salsa, Gymnastics, Drama and even a ‘Choir & Glee Club’.

More evidence linking stress to obesity Using hair to measure long-term levels of the stress hormone cortisol, UK researchers have confirmed the link between chronic stress and packing on pounds, as well as difficulty shedding excess weight. ‘When people are facing a stressful situation, a chain reaction is set off in the body that results in the release of cortisol, leading to higher levels of this hormone in the body,’ said lead study author Sarah Jackson of University College London in a statement to Reuters Health. ‘Cortisol is involved in a broad range of biological processes, including metabolism, body composition and the accumulation of body fat,’ Jackson said. ‘When we’re stressed out we may also find it more difficult to find the motivation to go for a run or resist unhealthy foods.’ Stress sets off alarms in the brain that trigger the nervous system to release hormones to sharpen the senses, tense the muscles, speed up the pulse and deepen breathing. Commonly called a flight or flight response, this biological reaction helps us defend ourselves in threatening situations. Isolated or temporary stressful situations may not be harmful, but routine exposure to stress can lead to immune system problems, heart disease, nervous system complications and mental health disorders in addition to obesity. For the study researchers examined data collected from men and women aged 54 and older taking part in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants underwent tests every two years starting in 2002, and during the sixth wave of the study they provided a hair clipping. The study team tested cortisol levels that accumulated in the hair over time in 2,527 men and women and found that participants with more cortisol in their hair were also more likely to be obese or have lots of excess fat around their midsection. Participants who were classified as obese based on their BMI or waist circumference had particularly high levels of hair cortisol, the study found. The findings add to growing evidence linking stress to obesity, said Dr. Susan Fried, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. Cortisol is released in response to many stresses. Chronically high cortisol is thought to promote fat accumulation around the waist and increase the ability of fat cells to store fat. The findings suggest that people may need to take a holistic approach to weight loss that goes beyond diet and exercise to consider factors like stress, said Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center in New Haven, Connecticut. ‘You might think you need to improve your diet, or exercise more, and that’s true,’ Katz told Reuters Health. ‘But for you, the first priority might be to manage stress better so you are more capable of doing those things, and reduce a hormonal barrier to weight control into the bargain.’

Men’s health

Smooth for the summer now the real heat of summer has stealthily crept up on us, the big summer decision also arrives ….. do we shave our body for the hot weather, or not? From an athletic point of view, if you swim, run or bike there are actual performance benefits that come with playing it smooth. however, most guys who choose to shave their body, particularly in spain, do it for more prosaic and narcissistic reasons. visit any beach, swimming

pool or gym at this time of year and you will be surrounded by acres of smoothly shaved male flesh. spanish guys feel far more comfortable without body hair that clogs with sweat during the humid summer conditions and also think smooth skin shows off muscle definition in a much better fashion. so, if you're planning on doing it, here are a few tips on how you should go about it: First block out some time and be prepared to go slow, real slow, as shaving down your

entire body takes time and you certainly wouldn’t want to nick or cut a ‘vital organ’. Grab an electric trimmer and trim your entire body down to stubble, including your back, then, grab shaving cream and a razor with a fresh blade. shave against the direction of the hair growth and when time is tight, sometimes it’s easier to take a body part at a time while in the shower. one day shave your chest, the next your legs ensuring that afterwards you rinse with cool water to close the pores.

Beauty tips CheCk out our five top tips to ensure your at home manicure/ pedicure stays in tip-top condition: PreP your nails Remember that any bumps, ridges, or imperfections on your nails can cause your nail polish to chip, so take the time to remove any old nail polish and make sure you shape, file and buff your nails so you’re starting with a smooth base. aPPly a base coat Applying a base coat is one of the most important steps in getting fabulous, chip-proof nails. Not only does it prevent polish from staining your nails, but it also adheres to your nails better than regular polish, which helps extend the length of your manicure/ pedicure. allow nails to dry Ideally, you should let your nails dry for at least 2 minutes in between each coat of polish and if you’re wearing a darker shade, you should wait at least 3 minutes as darker polishes typically take longer to dry. aPPly a chiP resistant toP coat Finding a good chip-resistant top coat will be a game-changer in extending the life of your athome manicures/ pedicures. aPPly a toP coat every day If you REALLY want to extend the life of a polish, you can apply a top coat every single day.

Hormonal, hot and had enough? The menopause is actually the last menstrual period of a woman's life. The average age of the menopause is 51 but it can occur later or much earlier. Women can also suffer menopausal symptoms for many years after the menopause too! How will i know wHen i am going tHrougH tHe menopause? This is very difficult to answer as often a woman may not know, especially if she is younger than average. Her periods may be normal and regular but she may be experiencing other symptoms such as memory loss or tearfulness. Women may be misdiagnosed with depression when in fact the cause is hormonal. However, if you are aware of the symptoms of menopause, you may be able to piece together the puzzle. Pallet herb gardens on trend Take Two of the most on point trends in homes and gardens right now, then merge them together and you’re on to a surefire winner to impress in the gardening stakes. Using wooden pallets, leftover from the building and DIY industry to make functional tables, furniture and garden accessories, has long been popular, as they are inexpensive and easy to assemble into great looking, stylish items

Growing your own herbs has also been trending heavily on social media recently, as more and more people are trying to eat cleaner and healthier with fresher ingredients and flavours. So, there you have it, pallets and herbs working in harmony together, it’s perfect, almost a match made in heaven. Let’s face it, If there's one thing you can grow in your garden at ease, it's a herb garden. with the warmer months, many of us are now embracing the great outdoors and contributing to the 'grow your own' trend. From rosemary to chives, herbs are flavoursome and easy to incorporate into your cooking, especially when entertaining family and friends over a BBQ. However, the point is, as we all know, it's not just about the herbs you grow in your garden, but they are showcased. as a houseproud nation, it's no surprise that we're beautifying our planters and personalising our containers to make our herb gardens look like stylish growing spaces. Pallets are proving to be a popular choice, as is the vertical planting option, which is currently trending on Pinterest. whilst we’re on the subject of herbs, remember, the beauty of them is that you can grow them in your kitchen. That's right, indoor gardening is on the rise and you

can grow herbs in the smallest of spaces, such as on the windowsill. So what are you waiting for? Grow your very own herb garden using pallets or a windowsill and be the envy of everyone. Here are a few ‘herby tips’ to get you started: Let there be Light: Herbs need 4-6 hours of direct sun every day to grow healthily grow from seed: When you first start out trying to grow fresh herbs, begin by trying to grow from seedlings rather than planting your own seeds. These great little starter plants are widely available in grocery stores in the late spring. For the same price as a packet of fresh herbs from the produce section, you can buy your own little starter plant. Choose the right varieties: Start by trying to grow fresh basil. It is the perfect trainer herb. First, basil grows quickly, allowing you to observe the effects of your care more easily. Second, basil leaves wilt visibly when not watered enough, but recovers well if you water the wilted plant. water moderately: water herbs a moderate amount every day, as whilst some houseplants flourish with one solid watering per week, most delicate herbs require moderate and regular watering. This is particularly true during hot summer months. If you have good drainage at the bottom of your pot (at least a drainage hole, possibly rocks beneath the soil), it will be difficult to water herbs too much.

Survive the heatwave at home

Keep your cool and…

Keep your blinds closed 30 per cent of unwanted heat comes from your windows - closing the blinds essentially prevents your home from becoming a miniature greenhouse, which is especially the case for south- and west-facing windows. hack a fan instead of turning on the air conditioning Fill a mixing bowl with ice (or something equally cold, like an ice pack) and position it at an angle in front of a large fan, so that the air whips off the ice at an extra-chilled, extramisty temperature. set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise Ceiling fans needs to be adjusted seasonally. Set counter-clockwise in the summer at a higher speed, the fan’s airflow will create a wind-chill breeze heat-proof your bed Slightly dampening your sheets before bedtime will majorly help you chill out. You might also want to buy yourself a buckwheat pillow or two - buckwheat hulls have a naturally occurring air space between them and won’t hold on to your body heat like conventional pillows, even when packed together inside a pillow case.

Cars that give school ‘cred’ Motoring experts have revealed a list of the top five cars guaranteed to boost the ‘school gate credibility’ of UK dads following a poll amongst its team of motoring editors. It’s not just the music being played on the CD as you automatically reverse into a space at the school gates that, according to the advert, gets you noticed. James Dower, senior Black Book editor at hpi, said: “We thought it would be fun to look at some of the makes and models of cars that can give the ultimate feeling of school gate cred. Our team of editors considered everything from top of the range supercars to one-off fantasy cars as seen in the movies such as the classic DeLorean from Back to the Future or Vin Diesel’s 1968 Dodge Charger featured in the latest Fast and the Furious movie. They eventually decided to keep it real by settling for more realistic vehicles that would really appeal to dads.” The Top 5 list of cars offering the greatest school gate cred is as follows: 1) Jaguar F-Pace 2) Range Rover Evoque 3) VW Tiguan 4) Audi TT 5) BMW X1 Added James: “The Jaguar F-Pace just edged it in our poll ahead of the Evoque and the Tiguan. With its iconic Jaguar heritage in a popular SUV bodystyle, the F-Pace is sporty and compact yet relatively affordable. It’s also perfect for the age range of a dad doing the school run.”

Nephew surprises uncle in emotional unveiling of his restored Vauxhall In 2008 at the age of 58, Geoff Charles’ uncle, Bob Charles, retired through ill health after an accident which started a degenerative back disorder of the spine and left him in constant pain and on lots of medication. Inspired by his uncle’s bravery in the face of his serious spinal condition, in April 2017 Geoff Charles, surprised him by spending two years secretly restoring his beloved Vauxhall Carlton GSi 3000 24v back to its former glory, just like an episode of Car SOS. Bob thought the vehicle was mouldering in an Essex garage having left it there 17 years ago when he moved to Ireland. After failing to get it back on the road in April 2015, when they found the Carlton had a badly corroded fuel tank, he conceded the car as a write-off. Under false pretences, Geoff took

his uncle to Charles Hurst Vauxhall showroom at Chimney Corner where he admired the car, not recognising at first that it was his. As Bob looked closer, he realised that it was in fact his Vauxhall Carlton GSi 3000 24v! A fine vehicle capable of 145 mph which he had purchased for £28,000 back in 1991 when it was just 2 ½ years old. ‘You’re joking! Oh my goodness. I can’t believe it. I don’t know what to say.’ Bob said, visibly emotional as his friends and family joined him to enjoy the moment. Once the restoration process was complete, Geoff Charles said, ‘The majority of the two years it took to restore was mainly due to sourcing parts. A few times I thought we had come to the end of the road but we persevered. Now, completely fully serviced with new plugs, leads, filters, fluids and new battery, it starts and runs like clockwork. I can’t wait to see his face!’ Geoff talks emotionally about his uncle; ‘Talking with Bob over the phone you would never know he has these conditions as he is always cheerful, positive and upbeat in his demeanour. And even though he finds general mobility difficult, his passion for his cars remains.’ ‘He has done so much for me over the years, helping me with the family business, Bower Retirement and also being a father figure and mentor to me. I wanted to repay him by restoring his cherished Carlton and give him the surprise of having it back to its former glory for him to drive.’
