A tribute to Victor
by Tahnee Wright The Governing Board of the Natural Park of Penyal d’Ifac has approved the creation of a commission to prepare an application to UNESCO for the rock to be recognised as a World Heritage Site. The commission will apply for the rock to enter the ‘mixed heritage’ category – that is culture and nature together. The commission will be made up of representatives from the Generalitat Valenciana, the Ministry of Environment, the Valencian Tourism Agency, Calpe Town Council, Alicante Provincial Council, the General Directorate of Costas, the University of Alicante, MARQ and other environmental and social associations. “The preparation of the application for the rock to be recognised as a World Heritage Site will prove arduous work but the Board of Directors consider that it is the definitive recognition that the Penyal is lacking” said President of the Governing Board, Guillem Sendra. The Penyal d’Ifac is a massive limestone outcrop emerging from the sea and linked to the shore by rock debris. It is home to numerous rare plants, including several endemic species, over
300 species of animals and a nesting site for colonies of sea birds and other birds. Rising to 332 metres high, the rock is a striking visual feature of the Mediterranean coastline. Historically it was known to the Phoenicians as the Northern Rock, to distinguish it from its southern counterpart, the Rock of Gibraltar. Behind Penyal d’Ifac is a large lagoon cut off from the sea by strips of sandy beach and extending inland to the coastal mountains. The wetland area around the lagoon is all that remains of the formerly much more extensive wetlands of the Marina Alta. A protracted campaign to protect the site’s unique natural diversity led to the area being granted natural park status in January 1987. With an area of 45 hectares, it is the smallest natural park in Spain, possibly in Europe. The park ranges from sea level to an altitude of 332 metres at the summit of the rock. From the top of the rock there are views over the surrounding villages and countryside and on a clear day as far across the sea as Ibiza.

Instead, municipal letterboxes will be installed and 12,940 affected residents will have to collect their post. Local councils have campaigned against these measures but the National Market and Competition Commission dismissed them and supported Correos given the low population density in comparison to the number of dwellings in these areas. SAILORS in the Denia/ Javea waters spotted a whale this week – but sadly, it was dead. The 12-metre mammal eventually washed up on the beach in Denia in an advanced state of decomposition emitting an extremely bad smell. The Marina Alta coastline has long been described as a cetacean ‘motorway’ - as of May, many whales are spotted migrating south and they tend to come closer to the shores between the cabo de Sant Antoni and the Cap de la Nau.

For or against? by Rose Holmes MORE THAN 6,600 people have already signed the petition ‘SOS Denia’ on change. org, opposing the build of the controversial urbanisation ‘Las Olas’ directly in front of the sea on Les Marines beach. Signatories have demanded that the construction, planned on one of the most damaged and delicate sections of the Marina Alta coast, be denied planning permission. But petition organisers Protejamos la Playa and SOS Natura Marina Alta are now putting more pressure on Denia Town Council after receiving notification that both the Provincial Service of Costas and the General Sub-Directorate of Costas have approved the plans, leaving the decision at the door of Denia Town Hall. Along with signatures, many comments have been left on the change.org petition that show concern for the coast and for the almost non-existent Blay Beach.
Works to start once holidaymakers have gone home
Projetamos la Playa and SOS Natura Marina Alta say: “Have the experts not stated that it is imperative to reduce front line construction, not increase it? Despite this advice, new damaging projects continue to be proposed, as is the case of ‘Las Olas’ on the Denia coastline. “This project has become a stunning example of just what we shouldn’t be doing! Similar cases exist from Catalonia to Andalusia and from Canary to Balearic Islands. “Please stop passing the buck from one to the other and start collaborating together to form an integral plan to protect this beach and avoid its disappearance! A plan with long lasting solutions to save, stabilize and restore this endangered area, as well as all the beaches along the Dénia coastline.” If you’d like to sign the petition, checkout https://www.change.org/p/sos-deniaspain-say-no-to-the-destruction-of-ourbeaches-help-protect-our-beaches. THE €72,000 redevelopment works on avenida Lepanto in Duanes de la Mar, Javea will begin in mid-September. The works are expected to be completed within two months as the area is restructured with a new parking lot providing more spaces. Once the works on aven-
ida Lepanto are completed, the council will take to the Puente de Triana, carrying out further improvements to complete the redevelopment to the port area of the town, improving access for all near the Casco Historico and the Arenal. Mayor Jose Chulvi said: “In recent years, the Javea
fishing district has been the scene of various urban redevelopment works. Some works have been necessary given storm damage and others have been in the interest of the municipality as it continues to attract more and more tourists each high summer season.”

€20,000 copper thief caught by Tahnee Wright A Bulgarian man was arrested for posing as a municipal worker and stealing more than 700 kilos of copper pipes from residents in Teulada, Moraira and Benissa.
The 38-year-old thief caused over €20,000 damage stealing from at least 32 homes. The investigation, led by the ROCA team in El Verger, revealed how the man had gone to considerable lengths to disguise himself as he fooled resi-

dents – wearing a fake municipal worker uniform as he made his way around urbanisations in a white Seat Toledo. He studied the homes from which he would steal, before jumping the gates and cutting the copper pipes without shutting the gas off – which could cause an explosion. The thief was caught on one occasion by a home-owner, who he fooled into thinking he’d been sent to the property with a municipal works order. After several incidents, officers were able to obtain an image of the man from a security camera at one of the urbanisations. With the image, officers visited local scrapyards where he had been trying to sell the pipes on. At one of the scrapyards, where the thief had sold on a considerable number of the pipes, officers were able to fully identify him from further security camera images and contacted the Bulgarian authorities, who verified his whereabouts. The man was arrested at his home in Teulada and will be detained in prison before facing trial.
Another heat stroke hiker rescued
FIREFIGHTERS rescued a 42year-old hiker who suffered heat stroke in the Sierra de Segaria on Monday. Despite the hiker being well equipped, as the sun shone down and temperatures reached nearly 30° she began to feel tired and nauseous. She called the emergency services just after 2.15pm and sent a photo showing her location between El Verger and Ondara. Three firefighters from Denia located the hiker with ease as she was directly off the highway. They gave her water and stabilised her before aiding her back down the mountain just before 4.15pm.
Museum receives donation from family legacy A FAMILY in Javea recently donated an ancient amphora to the Soler Blasco Museum, also in Javea. The amphora dates back to the I century and was part of the Alvarez-Ossorio family legacy. It was recovered from the sea in the cala Tango by a submariner decades ago, before laws regulated marine archaeological remains had to be delivered to the public administration. The submariner gifted the amphora to the father of Alvarez Ossorio, who preserved it whilst he was alive and left instructions for his family to donate it to the Soler Blasco Museum when he died. The municipal archaeologist confirmed that the amphora – a tall ancient jar or jug with two handles and a narrow neck – is of Italian origin and would have been used to transport wine. The amphora is in good condition and will be displayed in the room along with other items of marine archaeology.
Broken leg for risk-taking teen
A 15-YEAR-OLD boy broke one of his legs after he jumped into the sea from the Cala de Ambolo in Javea last Sunday. The emergency services were alerted to the scene at around 2.00pm. The Red Cross rescued the boy and stabilised him before taking him to the Grandella where he was met by an ambulance and taken to the health centre. He had miscalculated the depth of the sea and his leg broke on the rocks after he jumped. This is the third accident to have taken place this high summer season as bathers dare to jump into the sea from cliffs and coves. The Policia Local have reminded residents and visitors to act responsibly this high summer season – especially in areas not considered ‘bathing zones’ as they are not monitored by lifeguards.
Benidorm hotel stays down again
HOTELS in Benidorm saw a near two per cent drop in occupancy rate in the first half of August in comparison to the same period last year. Figures released by hotel association HOSBEC earlier this week show the city’s hotels experienced a 92.3 per cent occupancy rate in the first two weeks of August – 1.9 per cent less than the same period last year. Despite the decrease in comparison to last year’s figures, 2017 is still the third busiest summer the city has had since 2004. Distribution of the tourism market by nationality consolidates the Spanish as the first market with 45.2 per cent, while the British represented just under 40 per cent.

We love tourism
THE Association of Merchants and Employers (ACE) of Denia has launched a campaign to fight ‘tourismphobia’ - the organisation has handed out stickers for local businesses to display with the slogan ‘Yes, we love tourism’. The campaign comes just weeks after Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy intervened as antitourist anger felt in other regions turned physical. At the beginning of August, a video emerged of masked activists setting off flares outside a restaurant full of tourists on the island of Palma de Mallorca. They then entered the restaurant and threw confetti at frightened diners. Rajoy described the activists as ‘extremists going against common sense’. Tourism makes up 12 per cent of Spain’s economy.

Husband of Benidorm balcony fall victim launches new appeal THE husband of Kirsty Maxwell - the newlywed scot who fell from a tenth floor balcony at Benidorm’s Payma Apartments on April 29 - has launched an appeal to find a female witness who was allegedly staying on the same floor as Kirsty and her friends. The investigation is ongoing and Kirsty’s family and friends have been campaigning tirelessly in an attempt to find out exactly what happened the night she fell. Now Kirsty’s husband, Adam, has launched an appeal to find a female witness who he believes could provide important information regarding his wife´s final moments. Speaking to the British press, he said: “This woman has been identified as a witness and we’re asking her to come forward with information - we don’t know her name.
€8,000 cat bill
THE CITY of Benidorm has received a subsidy of €8,314 from the Provincial Council of Alicante to sterilise and vaccinate colonies of stray cats that occupy its streets. The municipal campaign began at the end of last year in conjunction with the city’s veterinary clinics to ensure public health; so far 70 cats – 37 females and 33 males – have been treated. The City Council is responsible for the collection of the cats
“We also have been given hotel room numbers and we are desperate to speak to some of the people who stayed in these rooms. “It’s shocking we have had to find out this information for ourselves. This is our reality now. We’ve had people coming forward with more information and for us it’s vital that we speak to this woman.” A post has also gone up on the Kirsty Maxwell Information Appeal Facebook page appealing for this apparent witLEFT ness. Councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate said earlier this week that “the objective” is to reach the end of the campaign with between 120 - 130 cats treated and stressed that the campaign seeks to ensure that cats living on the street “do not constitute a risk to public health.”

Marina Alta men live longer MEN born in the Marina Alta live the longest out of the whole of the Valencian region, according to figures released by the Valencian Health Observatory. Life expectancy for men born in the Marina Alta is 80.91 years, ahead of Baix Segura (80.71 years) and Camp de Turia (80.55 years). Life expectancy for both sexes in the Valencia region has increased by 3.8 years for men and 2.6 years for women between 2000 and 2015, according to the observatory.
Averaged life expectancy for both sexes in the Valencian region is currently among the highest in Europe - it is 83.3 years in Spain, 82.3 in the Valencian region and 82.1 in Europe. However, the Marina Alta does not boast the highest life expectancy across the region for women, the figures revealed – women in Camp de Turia (85.70 years), Alto Palancia (85.51 years) and Baix Segura (85.44 years) pipping the post.

The immediate aftermath

IT TOOK members of the police and security services – especially the Mossos d’Esquadra (the Cataluña police force) – just over 100 hours to catch and bring to justice the perpetrators of the outrage on Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Across the world, images of the aftermath of the terrorist attack which killed 13 innocent people and injured 100 others – some seriously and with life-changing conditions – reduced many to tears and with a sense of outrage. Men, women and children from 34 different countries were affected which proves the international attraction of one of the world’s most iconic tourist destinations. But both the Spanish and visitors were back walking up and down the same boulevard within hours showing a sense of defiance to the terrorists and support to the victims and their families.
Mourners laid flowers across the streets in Las Ramblas near to the scene of the attack
The terrorists
Two of the four suspects arrested following the attacks have been charged by a judge in Madrid with terrorism offences. One of the remaining suspects was released but required to report to police on a weekly basis while investigations continued, and the other was detained for further questioning. During the hearings that were held behind closed doors it is understood from sources in the Spanish news media that one of those charged had confirmed that a much larger and daring attack had been planned. This potentially included a massive truck
bomb attack on Barcelona’s most iconic landmark of the unfinished Sagrada Família cathedral.
The driver
The terrorists were charged just 24 hours after police killed Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, the last unaccounted-for member of the ter-
rorism cell, in the countryside west of Barcelona. He was believed to be the driver of the van that killed the initial 13 people but it was sometime later that it was discovered that he also stabbed a man during his getaway.
The final victim
The man stabbed to death was Pau Pérez, from Vilafranca del Penedes and some 40

vehicular access. As Councillor Javier Scotto presented the bollards, he pointed to a new pedestrian crossing which has also been installed after “pedestrians crossed that section without realising that it is a crossroad.” Scotto explained that “drivers did not respect the traffic prohibition on calle La Via, which led to complaints regarding the safety of pedestrians, especially children.” He also added that the bollards are

miles from Barcelona. He was found dead in the back of his Ford Focus used as Abouyaaqoub’s getaway vehicle at the scene of the latter’s death at the hands of police. In an horrific twist of fate, Pérez had called his family when he knew of the original attack to assure them he was OK. Minutes later as he went to get into his car, he was himself attacked and killed.
Water contamination on the up
Figures soon to be released by the Ministry of Environment estimate a 24 per cent rise in water contamination across the Marina Alta since 2009 – in 15 municipalities there are more than 50 milligrams of nitrate in each litre of tap water: Beniarbeig, Benidoleig, Benimeli, Denia, El Verger, Els Poblets, Javea, Ondara, Orba, Pedreguer, Pego, Rafol d’Almunia, Sagra Sanet y Negrals, and Tormos. The problem is not new and was first discovered in the 80s – the municipalities get their water from the ground and it is vulnerable to contamination by agricultural nitrates. 50 milligrams of nitrate in each litre of tap water has been the maximum amount recommended by the World Health Organisation since 2004.

by Tahnee Wright CALPE MAYOR Cesar Sanchez announced this week that he will be resigning from his post to focus on his work as Head of the Provincial Council of Alicante. The announcement was followed by much deliberation as to who might take over – be it deputy Manuel Cabrera who has been reported to have shown little interest in climbing the ranks, or Ana Sala, a ‘heavyweight in local politics’ (say the Spanish press) and Councillor of Urbanism. The possibility of Pilar Cabrera or Hilde Elisa Peter Backaert taking over has also been deliberated.

Arrested for masturbating in front of children A 34-YEAR-OLD Spanish man was arrested in El Verger after being caught masturbating in the common areas of the urbanisation where he lives “while watching minors and not caring that they could see him,” according to sources. The arrest came after several adults
noticed the man sat, several times, on a bench near the playground watching the children – they became suspicious of him and even more so as he began watching the children in the swimming pool. Soon afterwards, he was caught in the communal shower near the swim-
ming pool masturbating.
The man was sent straight to court
and released on bail with a restraining order prohibiting him from approach-
ing the common areas of the urbani-
sation, specifically the playground and the swimming pool.

The Lebrel Lighting Studio
A secret hideout from the hustle and bustle Abellanas to access the space. “In this case we are not referring to an idyllic hut you would find in the middle of the woods but rather to tiny spaces recovered from the city itself, where you can hide from the city’s hectic pace,” Abellanas said. “These are locations that due to their architecture, location or size have become useless. People hardly notice when walking by.” Have you spotted the secret hideout?

Lebrel’s elegant lighting designs
SELF-TAUGHT Spanish designer Fernando Abellanas has installed a novel studio beneath a graffiti-covered bridge in Valencia, that includes shelving, seating, and even a sleeping space. Abellanas, who designs furniture and lighting under the studio name Lebrel, created the small timberand metal-framed hut in just two weeks and made use of the concrete infrastructure to form a roof and walls for the hideaway. He prefers not to reveal its exact location within the city, but said he is often drawn to design huts for neglected spaces. “I feel a great attraction for this type of place and sometimes I make interventions in them. I depend a lot on the conditions offered by the place,” he told architecture, interiors and design magazine Dezeen. “It is a personal intervention that tries to put value in these type of spaces. It is also about recovering those sensations of the huts we used to make as small ones. It’s no secret that plastic waste is a growing global issue. And to help paint a picture of just how large the issue is, Luzinterruptus, the anonymous Spanish art collective, designed a maze of plastic waste in the middle of the Plaza Mayor in Madrid. The 170-metre long, three-metre high installation was created from approximately 15,000 plastic bottles collected from nearby universities, hospitals and other institutions over the course of a month. It was built as part of the city’s fourth Centennial Celebration of the Plaza Mayor and served as an extension of a similar project that Luzinterruptus designed in Poland in 2014.
The installation also included a number of intricate paths and narrow passages that forced visitors to keep guessing the way out. The interior featured no reference points and the smell of plastic enhanced the overall experience of the installation, according to Luzinterruptus. The group hopes that its projects will help raise awareness around the importance of recycling before the issue of plastic waste takes a turn for the worse. Luzinterruptus is heading to Las Vegas and Bordeaux, France, next, where it will create works of art made from plastic bags. The group plans on heading back to Madrid in October to design a larger project from 60,000 plastic bottles.

Rising migrant arrivals in Spain could become ‘big emergency’ by Rose Holmes THE rising flow of migrants to Spain from North Africa could evolve into a “big emergency” if the pace continues, the U.N.’s migration agency said. After large rescues in recent weeks, including 300 off Spain’s southern coast who had attempted to cross the Mediterranean from Morocco, more than 9,000 migrants have arrived by sea in Spain this year, surpassing the 2016 totals, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. In addition, 121 migrant deaths have been recorded on the route, against 128 for all of last year. “We understand from our experts in the field that Spain now is going through something like what Greece saw in the beginning of 2015 or Italy even earlier,” IOM spokesman Joel Millman told a Geneva news briefing. The vessels heading to Spain are ALL ABOARD: Boats are much smaller and carry fewer midangerously grants than those crossing to Italy overloaded with men, women and from Libya, or previously from Turkey to Greece, but they are now archildren
riving daily, he said. “Obviously if this grows at the rate it’s growing it could be a big emergency,” Millman said, adding that other aid providers would have to help. Spain this year has reported a spike in the number of migrants coming by sea or trying to cross the borders in its two North African enclaves - Ceuta and Melilla - and numbers are expected to double when compared to 2016. “At the moment, our estimation is 9 per cent of those on the move into Spain are children,” said Sarah Crowe, spokeswoman of the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF). So far this year, 119,069 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea, with almost 83 per cent landing in Italy and the rest divided between Greece, Cyprus and Spain, IOM said. This compared with 266,423 arrivals across the region at the same time last year, it said. “Deaths on the Mediterranean this year are 800 below what they were at this time last year,” Millman said. IOM figures show that they currently stand at 2,410 dead or missing.

by Tahnee Wright A BABY dolphin died last week after “hundreds” of beachgoers in southern Spain surrounded the animal to touch it and take pictures with it. The incident - which took place on the beach in Mojacar - has sparked condemnation from Equinac, a Spanish non-profit organisation that advocates for marine wildlife. According to several posts on the group’s Facebook page, a baby dolphin that was stranded on the beach was quickly surrounded by numerous “curious” people, including children, who wanted to touch and photograph it. Some accidentally covered the dolphin’s spiracle, the blowhole the animals use to breathe, the group said. One concerned person reported the stranded animal to the country’s emergency services number, but by the time Equinac rescuers arrived at the beach, the dolphin
was dead, the group said. “Once again, we note that the human being is the most irrational species that exists,” Equinac wrote on Facebook, blasting the “selfishness” of those that had swarmed the animal. “There are many [who are] incapable of empathy for a living being that is alone, scared, starved, without his mother and terrified... All you want to do is to photograph and poke, even if the animal suffers from stress.” The group later clarified that the baby dolphin may have been isolated because it was sick or somehow separated from its mother. However, even though the beachgoers had not been responsible for the dolphin’s stranding, merely touching and photographing the animals can cause them to enter “a very high stress state” and at worst, to experience fatal shock, the group said. Those who see a stranded dolphin should call the emergency services rather than try to handle the animal, it added.

New mum decapitated in faulty hospital lift hours after giving birth Ms Nunez, who was still holding her new-born, was reportedly being moved to the maternity ward by a porter when the lift doors opened and closed a few times while they were inside. When the porter attempted to wheel the new mum out of the lift to use another one, it began to rise of its own accord with the doors open, leaving part of her body outside. Ms Nunez is survived by her new-born and two other daughters, aged four and five, as well as her husband of four years, who said he was devastated by what happened. “This can’t be so. Today it was Rocio but tomorrow it could be someone else,” he told ABC Sevilla. Photo credit: facebook
A SPANISH woman who had just given birth to her third child was decapitated by a faulty hospital lift. Rocio Cortes Nunez, 25, had just given birth by c-section and was being wheeled back to her room on a stretcher when the incident occurred at the Our Lady of Valme hospital in Seville last Sunday.
HER WHOLE LIFE IN FRONT OF HER: Rocio was only 25years-old and leaves behind her three children and her husband
Her brother-in-law David Gaspar said the accident was hard to believe and the family wants answers as to how it happened. While an investigation has been launched, officials are saying the lift had been inspected just a week earlier during its regular check and no problems were detected. Regional Health Minister Marina Alvarez described the accident as “rapid, unusual and tragic” and said they had met with the company that maintains the lift as part of their investigation. She also added that members of Ms Nunez’s family as well as the porter who was with her in the lift were undergoing counselling.

It’s all in the Name by
Colin Bird
I WAS watching Vintage TV recently and it featured music from the 60’s and 70’s as it often does on a Friday night, and I realised that although the Americans are really big in naming bands after actual locations in the US, the Brits have always gone out of their way to avoid it. I also realised how sad I am for watching Vintage TV every Friday. The Yanks have the likes of Chicago, Boston and even the grand, all encompassing title of America in the US lexicon of group names, not to mention: New York Dolls; Kansas; Ohio Players and Detroit Spinners amongst others. I suppose it’s understandable when you look at the names of British towns and cities. Somehow Bournemouth, South Shields and Ramsbottom don’t seem to lend themselves to the naming of an alcohol, drug and sex fuelled band from the rock and roll netherworld. You just might get away with Pratts Bottom if you are a heavy metal outfit, but it’s borderline. There was only one English band of any consequence I can recall that stuck its head above the parapet and gave itself a place name, although I have to say, ASIA is a bit of a
cop out when you have to go to the other side of the world for inspiration. Sure we have had Portishead (a place near Bristol) who enjoyed a degree of success. But they were from the 90’s, so don’t really count. And can you believe The Leyton Buzzards who had one minor hit in the 70’s with ‘Saturday Night’. Remember it? No me neither. Scotland is the home of Glasgow based band Texas, which to the best of my knowledge is not an area in that city. Still, The Gorbals or Pollokshields would have perhaps sounded a tad un-cool, so good luck to them I say. In recent times the Yanks have even had the gall to form a band called Halifax. Halifax! And they are not even from the other Halifax in Canada let alone Yorkshire, but from Thousand Oaks, California for goodness sake. How did we let that one slip through our fingers? English groups took the pop world by storm during those heady 60’s days, but I can’t help wondering if things might have been different if instead of The Rolling Stones, Beatles and Kinks, the names of Dartford Tunnel, The Wavertree Four and Muswell Hill had been adopted.

The enemy within IT IS beyond belief that within 24-hours of the latest terrorist outrages, two in Spain, the Merkel regime warns Libya that they must not obstruct the flow of illegal migrants to the shores of the European Union.

If Britain declared war on Hitler’s Germany in 1939 for taking liberties with border control why aren’t we bringing the current German regime to its knees? Perhaps Tommy Atkins and Antoine should again shoulder arms. Whilst still reeling with shock at the loss of life in Barcelona and a near similar recurrence in Cambrils, Germany’s Federal government issues a stark warning to the Libyan government to not hinder the flow of migrants to Europe. It is the practice of EU funded non-government organisations (NGO) to assist people smugglers by intercepting and towing their human cargoes to European ports. EU governments and George Soros assisted ‘charities’, instead of discouraging Africa’s economic migrants, many radicalised by Islamic teachings, help the migrants to complete their passage to Europe. The Libyan government, picking up the pieces of NATO’s regime changing fiasco, now want to establish control over their own territorial waters. This is a perfectly reasonable initiative. Libyan control means that non-Libyan vessels, such as those funded by the EU and George Soros, are no longer allowed to enter Libya’s territorial waters. The NATO deposed Muammar Gadhafi was particularly good at protecting Europe from the refugee tsunami. His navy inter-
cepted migrants and returned them to Africa. According to Die Welt, the move has infuriated the German government, which has yet to say what action they will take to occupy Libyan waters. Many migrants fleeing poverty use Libya to reach Europe choose the so-called central Mediterranean migration route. According to European border agency Frontex, the Libya – Europe route saw almost 100,000 illegal border crossings between January and July this year. Why is it difficult for so many people to connect the refugee and terrorism crisis with Americaninspired conflicts that have set the entire Middle East on fire? There is such a term known as ‘cause and effect’; it is high time that the 508 million misgoverned peoples of the European Union woke up the fact that the enemy is not in Moscow, Pyongyang or Beijing but is lurking malevolently in Washington DC, Berlin and Brussels. Germany, on this occasion, seems intent on driving the Arab scimitar and African panga deeper into Europa’s back. Is it Hitler’s revenge?
Trendy old dude or mutton dressed as lamb? by
Barry Duke
Back in 1993, author Stephen Fried, in his biography of supermodel Gia Carangi, coined the word “fashionista”. His wife loathed it, but the word quickly gained international currency and actually made it into the Oxford English Dictionary. Well, this month I decided to invent a variation: fashionpensionista. It describes people of a certain age who, for better or worse – mainly worse – think they can dress as they did when The Kinks sang their “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” on their 1965 album, Kinkdom. The word came to mind when a fella – knocking on 80 I would guess – sat next to me at bus stop in Benidorm. He was a cerise horror show, dressed from head to toe in varying shades of pink. Even the straps of his watches – two on each wrist – had luminous pink straps. I blame the fashion retailers. They believe that if you’re not in the 18-30 age range you have two choices: either wriggle your way into their skimpy gear, or go trawling though charity shop or vintage store racks in search of clothing people died in five decades ago. Back in the day, there was none of this nonsense when I was living in London. You hit 50, and immediately became a customer at any number of outfitters catering exclusively to mature gentlemen. You swaggered into Burton or Dunn & Co looking like a middle-aged Mick Jagger and emerged in a brown tweed outfit, looking (and acting) just like your dad. At a stroke, your broad mind and narrow hips changed places, and the outfits you now wore acted as a kind of warning to upstarts that that you were Not a Man to be Messed With. You could
get on a train, bus or the tube, and fearlessly order yobs to take their feet off the seats – and they’d meekly do so. But nowadays if a man of a certain age wearing skinny jeans and looking like a potato with cocktail stirrers for legs tried to exert authority over an anti-social teenager, he’d more than likely end up intensive care, taking his meals through a straw. Although society back then demanded that you look and act your age – meaning you had to wear your hair a certain length and buy shoes resembling Cornish pasties from Freeman, Hardy and Willis – many defied convention by keeping up with the latest trends without ever looking ridiculous. I was one of those rebels. It took some effort, mind, to retain the sort of boyish figure one needs for trendy gear, and I spent countless hours in a gym, from my 50 to mid-60s, to do just that. It clearly worked. A few years back I was standing outside Gatwick airport’s departure lounge puffing on a an e-fag when a young Frenchman approached me. “Are you in the movies, or maybe an artist?” he asked. Nope, I replied. Why do you ask?” His answer: “You’re one cool dude. I sure hope I look like you when I reach your age.” “As cool as Samuel L Jackson?” “Oh yeah, man, JUST as cool as Jackson”. About 18 months ago I had the pleasure of doing a photoshoot for a fellow fashionpensionista, a gay humanist and writer whose scriptwriting work included BBC radio plays and television scripts for the BBC and ITV – including Doctor
Who, Fraggle Rock, The Slide and The Adventures of Black Beauty. Victor Pemberton, who had settled in Spain a few years back with his lifelong partner, David Spenser, came to public attention when he announced last year that he was about to drive solo from the Costa Blanca to the Arctic to raise money for Help for Heroes, a charity for injured ex-service personnel. Although in his 80s, Victor looked far, FAR younger, and dressed and partied like a teenager … right until the beginning of August this year when he fell ill. He died in his sleep aged 85 on August 13. Farewell, Victor, you were certainly Benidorm’s coolest old dude, and we miss you terribly. Victor Pemberton R.I.P 13/08/2017

Understand the Spanish beat Basic Spanish for everyday needs by
Jane Cronin
NO DOUBT you have rushed to this page this week in your anxiety to find out the answer to last week’s question – is the word “agua” masculine or
feminine? First let’s look at the evidence. The word ends in the letter “a” which makes it look feminine; also when we talk about cold water, for example we say “agua fría” which obviously suggests it is a feminine word. However, for “the water” we say “el agua”, using the masculine form “el” for “the”. This is very strange, and here are some other words that do the same thing. The word for “eagle” is “águila” which is the same for a male or female of the species. The word seems to be feminine, confirmed by the fact that the plural is “las águilas”. And yet the singular, strangely is “el águila”. “El ama”, is another example of the same thing. We have “el ama de casa” the housewife, or “el ama de llaves” the housekeeper. Both of these jobs are associated with females, but this is not the point. “Ama”
is a feminine word, using the masculine “el” for “the”. A further example is the word “hacha” meaning “axe”. The sharp axe is “el hacha afilada”. Another word that behaves in the same way is “el hambre” (hunger). Here we do not have an “a” ending to make us think it is feminine, but if you are very hungry you say “tengo mucha hambre”. And finally “el alma” the soul: “El Alma Herida” (the Injured Soul) is apparently the title of a very bad Mexican soap opera. Google is a wonderful thing. Before I unravel this great mystery, I will just mention that these particular feminine words also take “un” instead of “una” for “a” or “one”, so one housewife is “un ama de casa”. A context for this might be “there was one housewife and two nurses in the class” “había un ama de casa y dos enfermeras en la clase”. (Don’t forget though, that when you describe someone’s job using “ser” you don’t translate “a”: “soy ama de casa” - I am a housewife). To understand the reason for this strange phenomenon our first guess would probably
be that it is because the words start with the letter “a” (agua, ama, alma, águila) or the sound “a” (hambre, hacha). However, this explanation doesn’t work as there are many words starting with “a” which do not behave in this way – “la actriz” (the actress), “la apertura” (the opening), “la hamaca” (hammock). Well, my friends, I will try your patience no longer, here is the answer. It is all to do with the “beat” or emphasis of the voice when speaking these words. In all of our key words the beat falls on the initial “a” sound (Ama, as opposed to hamAca). The issue of beat or stress and how words link together in speech is complex, but in this particular instance there is a fixed substitution of “la” for “el” in both spoken and written forms. You may think that this is not the most important or practical thing you have ever learnt about Spanish, and in one sense you may be right, but actually, we have just looked at one of the single most important things to understand about the Spanish language, and that is that where the “beat” falls in a word is of maximum importance in making yourselves understood.
Sing, Unburied, Sing A Novel by Jesmyn Ward
IN JESMYN Ward’s first novel since her National Book Award–winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural twenty-first-century America. Drawing on Morrison and Faulkner, The Odyssey and the Old Testament, Ward gives us an epochal story, a journey through Mississippi’s past and present that is both an intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle. Ward is a major American writer, multiply awarded and universally lauded, and in Sing, Unburied, Sing she is at the height of her powers. Jojo and his toddler sister, Kayla, live with their grandparents, Mam and Pop, and the occasional presence of their drugaddicted mother, Leonie, on a farm on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Leonie is simultaneously tormented and comforted by visions of her dead brother, which only come to her when she’s high; Mam is dying of cancer; and quiet, steady Pop tries to run the household and teach Jojo how to be a man. When the white father of Leonie’s children is released from prison, she packs her kids and a friend into her car
and sets out across the state for Parchman farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, on a journey rife with danger and promise. Sing, Unburied, Sing grapples with the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power, and limitations, of the bonds of family. Rich with Ward’s distinctive, musical language, Sing, Unburied, Sing is a majestic new work and an essential contribution to American literature.

Limited responsibility mortgage by Gonzalo Blanco www.blancolawfirm.com available in all Costa Blanca and inland with offices in Denia and Xativa
Dear Mr. Blanco, My parents bought a property in Spain over 15 years ago. Unfortunately, they had trouble paying the mortgage and the bank foreclosed and proceeded through auction to sell the property.
Though the auctioning the Bank obtained 100.000€, but the total amount to be recovered from the loan was 120.000€. The question is, can the bank order my parents to pay the balance of the pending debt?? Thank you for your inquiry. With regard to your question, it is important to know that article 1911 of the Spanish Civil Code establishes that to fulfil their obligations, the debtor responds with all his present and future assets. Article 105 of the Mortgages Act says that the Mortgage can be constituted as a guarantee of any kind of obligation and does not change the personal limited liability of the debtor according to the mentioned article 1911. This means that when a debt is granted by Mortgage, the debtor not only responds with the mortgaged asset but also responds with the rest of his heritage until the totality of the debt has been paid. There is a personal action that could be against the total assets of the debtor to cover the full debt of the loan, if the amount obtained of the mortgaged asset is not enough. Although there is an exception, called the Mortgage of limited liability, art. 140 of the Mortgage Act, which states that, the responsibility of the debtor is limited to the amount of the mortgaged assets.
It is in fact essential that we take into account that the limited responsibility must be established by express agreement, or in the case of people who are at risk of social exclusion to comply with the requirement of the Lay 1/2013, of 14th May. In your case, if this is not the case, with the execution of the mortgaged property the debt has not been cancelled, there is still a pending debt of 20.000€ that the bank could claim and take actions against other assets of your parents. Please note that the information in this article has been given considering the details provided by the reader, please contact us for specific information, our work requires study of the corresponding documentation to offer you the best legal advice

First-time buyers on the rise ON A non-seasonally adjusted basis, UK Finance data shows that mortgage lending in June rose, First-time buyers borrowed £5.9bn, up 26 per cent on the previous month and 9 per cent on June 2016. This equated to 36,000 loans, up 22 per cent month-on-month and 6 per cent year-on-year. Those that moved home borrowed £7.8bn, up 26 per cent on May and 15 per cent year-on-year. This equated to 36,500 loans, up 24 per cent month-on-month and 9 per cent compared to a year ago. Paul Smee, Head of Mortgages at UK Finance, commented: “June’s figures show a busy month in the mortgage market, with home movers having their highest monthly activity levels for over a year and
an especially high number of loans for first time buyers. Buy-to-let activity remains subdued compared to its 2015 peak but consistent month-to-month since stamp duty changes in April 2016. “But there are also signs of a softening market and we are not anticipating that this performance will be sustained in the second half of 2017. A slightly lop-sided market could well show some growth in house purchase lending but alongside reduced remortgage and buy-to-let activity.” Affordability metrics for first-time buyers saw the typical loan size increase from £137,000 in May to £139,000 in June. The average household income increased to £41,000 from £40,500. The average amount borrowed by home movers in the UK increased to £180,000 from £177,000 the previous month, while the average home mover household income increased month-on-month from £54,900 to £55,200. Buy-to-let activity was driven by remortgage lending which accounted for over two thirds of total lending. Buy-to-let house purchase and remortgage activity in June remained consistent to monthly levels seen since the change on stamp duty on second properties introduced in April last year.
Arrears and repossessions down
THE NUMBER of mortgages in arrears of 2.5 per cent or more of the outstanding balance declined to 88,200 in the second quarter of this year, the lowest level since at least 1994 when this run of data began. The total was 5 per cent lower than in the first quarter (92,600) and amounted to 0.8 per cent of the more than 11 million mortgages outstanding in the UK.
The second quarter also saw a fall in the number of mortgages across all arrears bands, including those with the highest levels of arrears. In the same period, the number of mortgages with arrears of 10 per cent or more of the outstanding balance totalled 25,200, down 5 per cent from 26,500 in the preceding quarter. This brought a welcome end to a period of five successive quarters in which this figure had edged upwards from 23,400 in the first quarter of 2016. The number of properties taken into possession also declined in the second quarter from 1,900 to 1,800 (accounting for 0.02 per cent of all mortgages). The total was the same
as in the final quarter of last year, and is the lowest figure since quarterly data was first published in 2008. In line with a trend that has become established in recent data, the rate of buy-to-let arrears was lower than arrears in the owner-occupied sector, although the buy-to-let possession rate was higher. This is because lenders extend a high level of forbearance to owneroccupiers to help them overcome any period of financial difficulty and stay in their homes wherever possible. Commenting on the data, UK finance head of mortgages Paul Smee said: “These figures show that the overwhelming majority of borrowers are managing their mortgage payments successfully, and many of those who have experienced some difficulty in the past are able to recover their financial position. “Borrowers are being helped by low interest rates, but mortgage costs are certain to rise at some stage. It is important therefore for customers to plan ahead and consider how their finances would be affected in those circumstances.”

Spanish actress to play key role in new cutting-edge crime drama
FAMOUS SPANISH actress, Myr Garrido, known for her roles in films such as Love and Other Misfortunes (2013), The Sonata of Silence (2016) and more recently Ikaro (2017) is making headlines in Hollywood. She has just been chosen to play a key supporting role in a new and cutting-edge TV series about crime and espionage called Smoking Gun written by award-winning British writer and producer Sutish Sharma, who previously worked for the BBC. The role played by Myr is that of a heroic and passionate character named Marie Adelmo, a secret agent working for the Spanish Intelligence services during the 80s; during a covert mission, she uncovers an alliance between the CIA and international drug traffickers. The series, which is being co-produced by Wanda Halcyon Television, Memphis Writers, New Street Pictures, Un Nouveau Jour, FX International Network and Access En-
tertainment, follows the FBI’s fictional investigation into the murder of a civil rights activist in Los Angeles during the turbulent eighties. The case forces the protagonist, a world-weary FBI agent, to travel to Spain and Nicaragua eventually to the door of the Central Intelligence Agency and a connection to drug trafficking in Los Angeles through cartels working in Spain. “We are very excited about the ‘Smoking Gun’ series and hope to have production underway in October of 2017 and we are delighted to have Myr Garrido in this key female role. She reminds us of a young M e r y l Streep,”
said Pat Andrew, executive producer of Halcyon and former Aaron Spelling executive. The production will be shot in Spain, Los Angeles and Warner Brothers Studios.

The fabulous line up of themed parties, feature a host of top local and international singers, drag artists, dancers, DJ’s and go go’s to entertain the hordes of enthusiastic, fun loving revellers. This will be the seventh Benidorm Pride, which, through the years, has grown to become one of the most popular fiesta’s on the town’s calendar, drawing huge crowds of all ages and nationalities. Rainbow flags will flutter proudly from venues throughout the picturesque, narrow streets of Benidorm’s old town and beach front, with many holding their own parties and themed nights throughout the week. The official festivities kick off on Wednesday September 6, with the opening Showtime party held in the visually spectacular surroundings of the Mirador del Castillo viewpoint, close to the old town church, featuring the best of the unmissable local talent Benidorm has to offer. Once again, co organiser and presenter
Sammy Kruz will be joined by the glamorous, multilingual Roxie Corazon to host all of the parties in their own inimitable fashion. Thursday’s White Party and Friday’s Black Party take place in the same location with international Dj’s and live pa’s. Entry to each of these two top class events is 12 euros, including a drink and tickets are already selling fast. Many people’s highlight of the whole week is the spectacular gay pride parade, which begins at 5pm on Saturday September 9. Starting at the Rincon de Loix end of Levante beach, the decorated floats and walkers wearing bright colourful clothing, meander along the beachfront, cheered on by passers by, before finishing at the Auditorio Julio Inglesias, in Parc L’Aiguera. Pride organiser Geoff Gartland, who along with partner Santos Morales and Sammy Kruz, has been instrumental in it’s increasing success, is keen to stress the inclusivity of the event.

18 members of Javea U3A’s Curry Club enjoyed the double delights of the hot weather and their passion for spicy cuisine as they gathered on the terrace of the Buddha Palace restaurant for their annual summer party recently. Diners enjoyed the restaurant’s special three-course menu, washed down with a beverage or two. The party was organised by group leaders James and Dodie Hodgkinson and was a break from the usual routine, whereby members will take in turns to host dinner parties at their homes with guests creating curry-based dishes to set a region or theme. Wacky Rocky Quiz Night !! Raising Funds for The Wijesinghe Girls Orphanage, Sri Lanka
Well its not often you organise a fund raising quiz and end up doing the the pelvic thrust to Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Show!!! Except, that is, when the quiz mistress is the very kind and supportive Loraine Gostling and the amazing team of adminners from Javea Connect ( Yes, Ondara Shopping Centre is Open today !!) It was certainly a quiz night with a difference, how come Steve Davis ended up without his underpants on and people were running around with scissors and safety pins ??!! (You’ll have to come to the next WGO quiz night to find out!!) Many thanks to all, especially Attie and all her friendly team at The Druids Cave in Moraira, who kindly opened up on a hot summers evening to allow us to cause mayhem and much laughter.... food was super scrummy! Although not huge in people numbers, the figure raised for the Wijesinghe Girls Orphanage Project in Sri Lanka was a staggering 405 euros. Helen Davis organiser said. “The money raised from the quiz was earmarked for renovation of the girls classroom, however the following day I had a request from Sampath who manages the project in Sri Lanka, asking us to help provide funds for the fuel for a 3 day trip for the girls. It is the only time, other than school, that they leave the orphanage, to visit Buddhist temples and other places of interest. I am pleased to say we not only paid for the fuel, fruit juices, cookies and a post card souvenir for each girl, there will be enough money left to start the first stage of the classroom work. THANK YOU ! Huge thanks again to Loraine, it was ASTOUNDING, also to my scrummy grandsons, Jake and Ollie for being my helpers on the night and joining in and also to my supportive family who buy crazy amounts of raffle tickets .... only to win and then feel obliged to redonate the prizes .... Bless !!” Check out ..... www.facebook.com/Rocky-Javea-Picture-Show. Performances coming up on 27th and 28th October at Le Senieta in Moraira. Reserve your tickets now!

Returning to normal after knee surgery Three months after surgery, most people have completely recovered and are able to return to many activities that were too painful or difficult previously. Once you’ve been cleared by your doctor, the safest way to restart activity after knee surgery is to find activities that avoid placing unnecessary stress on the now-repaired or even replaced joint. Here are three activities to help you move safely after knee surgery: 1. Walk (don’t run!). Experts say walking outside your home three to five times each day is one of the best ways to regain your knee strength. While you may need to adjust the length of your step and speed, you will be able to spend more time walking for exercise once your muscle strength improves. 2. Dance. While you should avoid high-impact moves
like jumping or lifts, ballroom dancing and gentle modern dancing are great ways to use leg muscles, engage in aerobic activity and have fun! Just be sure to avoid abrupt movements or twists that could potentially put your knee out of alignment. 3. Swim. Once the wound has healed, many people choose swimming as their exercise of choice as it’s not a weight-bearing activity and therefore reduces stress to the joints. If your knee is still a bit tender, opt for water aerobics or pool walking. Want to mix it up? You can feel safe doing many other recommended activities such as yoga, golf, bowls, aerobics or sailing. If you have experience prior to your surgery doing more intense activities, your doctor may give you the go-ahead to resume them. Whichever activity you choose, remember that rushing into activities before you’ve recovered sufficiently may put you at risk for complications, so be sure to check with your doctor first before resuming any activity after knee surgery.
Cherries are the healthy pick
Heart and diabetes Heart disease and diabetes threaten the health of millions every year, and cherries can help. Research from Michigan State University found that 20 cherries provide 25 milligrams of anthocyanins, which reduce inflammation by shutting down the enzymes that cause tissue inflammation. This helps protect the arteries from the damage that leads to heart disease. Further research shows that those same anthocyanins also help lower blood sugar levels in animals, leading scientists to speculate that a similar blood sugar lowering effect could occur in humans. Gout Cherries also have a low glycemic index, making
them a good choice for people with diabetes. Foods with a high glycemic index cause blood glucose to soar and then quickly crash. In contrast, foods with a low index, like cherries, release glucose slowly and evenly, helping you maintain a steady blood sugar level — as well as leaving you feeling full longer and potentially helping you maintain a

Have you ever said no to a cherry? Probably not. This summertime treat is simply delicious. And if you’re looking for another reason to indulge, you’ll be pleased to know that cherries are surprisingly good for you.
healthy weight. People suffering from gout, a form of arthritis characterized by severe pain, redness and tenderness in the joints can also be eased by cherries. Research from the Boston University School of Medicine showed that people who ate cherries had a 35 to 75 per cent lower chance of experiencing a gout attack.
Sleep When you find yourself wide awake and restless, your melatonin levels might be low. Melatonin is the chemical that controls your body’s internal clock to regulate sleep and promote overall healthy sleep patterns. Studies show that cherries are a natural source of melatonin, and researchers who have studied the melatonin content of cherries recommend eating them an hour before bedtime to help stabilise your sleep cycle.
HEALTH TREAT: The cherry on the cake.
ADVICE: Consult your doctor before getting too active.
Fight jet lag, fast!
MOST travellers try to make the most of their time overseas, yet fail to consider the leap in time zones they make in a matter of hours. It can take your body’s internal clock several days to catch up to that leap and in the meantime, you’re likely to experience the disruption of your sleeping and waking cycle known as jet lag. Symptoms of jet lag include sleepiness during the day, insomnia at night, poor concentration, confusion, hunger at inappropriate times or lack of appetite and general malaise and irritability. Check out RTN’s top five tips to fight jet lag. 1. Adjust your internal clock. Several days (at least four) before departure, gradually shift your sleeping and eating times to coincide with those at your destination. Once you arrive, adopt the local time for your daily routine. 2. Opt for overnight flights. You’ll have dinner at a normal time and be much more likely to sleep than on an afternoon flight. Depending on the length of the flight and the number of time zones you cross, you’ll arrive at your destination in the morning or afternoon. 3. Curtail coffee. For 12 hours before - as well as during - your flight, avoid overeating and caffeine. Although caffeine can help keep you awake longer, it makes you wake up more often once you do fall asleep and so reduces total sleep time. 4. Stay hydrated. Drink at least 8 ounces of water for every hour you’re in the air—even if you don’t feel thirsty. 5. Avoid or limit alcohol inflight. Cabin air dehydrates passengers, and altitude changes can quicken the effects of alcohol. A cocktail may relax you, but it’s also apt to dry you out and even worsen symptoms of jet lag.

Kenny’s Mystical Postbag
Kenny, I find it hard to believe in things that I cannot see. All this spiritual stuff doesn’t come to me and I am prepared to believe it if I can see something! Brenda C. Hi Brenda. Catch 22 here! If you believe then you will see, if you don’t then you won’t. All gnostic religions demand on belief forms. You are free to believe or not to believe, but these religions are founded on your faith and old stories from the past. Those with continued faith in Spirit do start a form of communication that leaves them well and truly knowing that there is something there; and that the soul continues long after Earthly life! They may see, but also feel and hear too such messages sent constantly. We can’t always see what we have to believe in. I have never been to Russia, but I have to believe it is there, although I have never seen it!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week Trust puts you best in a position of power, which you have to assume to make it all happen for you this astrological year. Bold statements need to come from the heart and the soul if what you truly do want is to become what you get!
Mars takes a step forward towards planet Kora this week, shedding some new light on an old niggle. One part of you is saying you have to let bygones be bygones; but you are angry about the way things have panned out, and what has happened as a result. This may be a time to spill the beans and clear your way ahead. Feel free to do so!
Duel entries of Venus and Mercury this week bring you a great inner satisfaction. Since you love to share and be generous, it is now that you should be catching up with friends and relatives; since you seem to have had a lot on your plate just lately. Send out that message that will bring all together and send out your true message of love!
Hold back and look before you leap this week because there is something to be said for erring on the side of caution right now. Somebody moved the goalposts, but it wasn’t you and it can’t be your job to apologise on behalf of someone else. With things at sixes and sevens this could be a time to sit things out until the coast is really clear!
One step forward and another one straight back? This week take decisive action because something truly does have to be nipped in the bud. Whilst blame can be apportioned to the Ceres occlusion with Saturn, there is more in what is going on than meets the eye right now. Under your stance both these planets can and will deliver!
A change of location this week also brings up the prospects of another project; and you need something to get your teeth into right now. Spontaneity is the keyword for you when the going gets tough and the tough get going! End this month with renewed purpose and start just as you wish to continue to set a grounding precedent.
Not everyone around you is supporting you right now, and though they may have their reasons, these are not the actions of a true friend. Jupiter sextiles with Saturn midweek and this delays things somewhat. Saturn is really going all out to protect you, whilst a wealth of blessings sent from Jupiter can’t get to you just yet. Hang in there!
Big changes are afoot right now! Expect an overdue payoff, due to you because you have stuck to your guns despite all that has been going on. This week sees you in a very sociable phase, but even there be unafraid to take a risk when something feels as right as it will do! Expand your World, because the best of times for you is now.
All that glitters is not gold, and you are about to find this out! Last week’s tryst with Uranus your planetary leader, and Venus, has left some unfinished business that only you can deal with. Look to your opposing sign of Leo to see things from a different angle, because for you, for now, the grass truly is greener on a vastly distant shore!
Crab like actions are poised to snap and to bite. Hiding your anger is not an option right now, and neither should you be ensconced in that protective shell either! Moon magic intervenes on your behalf, but since you do not like yourself when you are surrounded by negative energy, this may take a little time to show to good effect.
Plagued by a conscious, this week is about coming to terms, and you have done nothing wrong. Whilst a midweek deal pays off, you have also come to a stage whereby those that cross you are not worth worrying about. Mars actions with Kora to set a date for something in the near future that could greatly and positively impact on you
All this indecision is having a very negative effect on you, and you need to charge that positive energy to get the right results just now. Tuning into yourself you can reveal the absolute truth of what it is wanted right now; otherwise what you are approaching is an unfair compromise, and really only the very last resort for you.

Bacon and egg salad with oil and balsamic dressing For years I turned my nose up at the thought of warm salads, and then I went to France. The French are so creative when combining warm meat and fish in salads and I was soon converted. Ideally you need thick cuts of bacon (I used cured pork loin in this version) but ordinary sliced bacon would do just as well. You could try adding a few bits of spicy sausage such as Chorizo or even pieces of black pudding such as Spanish Morcilla if you like that kind of thing. 400g thick cut bacon, sliced into strips. 4 fresh eggs. Mixed salad leaves. Salt and freshly ground black pepper. For the dressing 4-5 tbls extra virgin olive oil. 2 tbls balsamic vinegar.
1. Fry the sliced bacon over moderate heat until well browned. 2. Meanwhile bring a large pan of water to the boil and drop in the eggs to poach them for 2-3 minutes. 3. Place a handful of salad leaves in the centre of four large serving plates and, when the bacon and eggs are ready, throw the bacon over the salad. 4. Quickly return the frying pan to the heat and add the olive oil and balsamic vinegar, leaving them to warm through while you place a poached egg on top of each salad. 5. Stir the dressing, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan and drizzle this over the salads. Season the eggs with a little salt and pepper and serve immediately. Serves 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 10-15 minutes.
Hake Fishcakes I remember fishcakes from my schooldays when they comprised 90 percent potato and 10 percent fish – if you were lucky. In recent years the posh fishcake has begun to appear on the menus of many a smart restaurant. I used hake in this version, but almost any flaky fish will do – fresh or frozen. The inclusion of a few extra ingredients gives the dish a spicy edge that really comes through in the taste. Try serving with a mixed salad. 250g hake fillets. 250ml fish stock (a cube will do) 650g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 2-3 spring onions, thinly sliced (or half a leek) ½ a small red chilli, de-seeded and finely sliced. 2 tbls olive oil. A handful of fresh parsley, roughly chopped. The grated rind and juice of a lemon. 1. Heat the stock in a large frying pan, then reduce to a
simmer and poach the fish until just cooked (4-5 minutes). Set aside and allow to cool. 2. In a large pan, boil the potatoes in salted water until just cooked (10-12 minutes). 3. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a small pan, add the spring onions and chilli and cook gently for 5 minutes. Allow to cool. 4. Strain the potatoes and mash them in the pan. Don’t worry if there are a few lumps. Stir in the olive oil, spring onions and chilli together with the parsley, lemon rind and juice. 5. Remove any skin from the fish and break it into small chunks. Fold the fish pieces into the mashed potato taking care not to break them up. 6. Form the mixture into 4 round patties and set aside until ready to cook. (The easiest way is to use a little flour on your hands or to press the mixture into a round pastry cutter). Fry the fishcakes in a little oil over moderate heat for 7-8 minutes on each side until evenly brown. Serve immediately. Serves 2. Preparation time: 10 minutes

Looking to give a dog a new home TONY AND Dorothy from Calpe rescued Charlie in June 2014. He was in bad shape but with their love and care he became a happy and healthy dog. Unfortunately Charlie died recently leaving his owners devastated. Tony and Dorothy have decided to look for another dog in which to give a loving home to. They are looking for an older male Jack Russell who is looking for their forever home. If you know of a Jack Russell that is need of some TLC then please email rudders21@hotmail.com
DOG AND cat lovers are so devoted to their favoured species that it’s been a long-running debate about which is the better pet, and each side makes its feeling known far and wide. Even people with less common pets like lizards or ferrets are mostly understood for their fanatic ways, but that’s not as unusual as it gets. But would you own a pet skunk, donkey or cockroach? Believe it or not, there are many people who do call these unconventional creatures their pets. One of the rarest creatures kept by people as pets as the Capybara. Related to the guinea pig, this native South American is the largest rodent in the world. Fully grown, the capybara is on average 4 feet (1.2 meters) long and usually weighs more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms). It’s rare to find these obscure animals as pets, but there’s one capybara named Caplin Rous who’s gained a loyal Internet following. His owner, Melanie Typaldos, who lives in Buda, Texas, has made it her mission to educate people about this very unusual rodent. Typaldos says capybaras are never fully domesticated, so you must handle one often while it’s young to establish a humanrodent relationship. Capybaras need lots of outdoor space and places to swim, since they are semi-aquatic creatures. They eat a steady diet of grass and require fresh drinking
water at all times. Capybaras need a lot of attention, plenty of room to roam and some type of swimming pool. They can be territorial and could bite with their large teeth. Typaldos doesn’t recommend capybaras for families with young children, because the rodents aren’t nearly as tolerant as some other domestic pets, like dogs. Photo credit: Wikimedia

LARGE GUINEA PIGS: This exotic pet isn’t for everyone.
Bed sharing with your pets IT´S BEEN reported that up to 79 per cent of pet owners allow pets to share beds with their human family members. Despite the popularity of the practice, physician and veterinary groups have taken turns speaking out against human-pet bed sharing for a variety of reasons. In the case of some physician groups, the warnings are human health based. Confirmed transmission
of MRSA skin infections and H1N1 influenza, for example, gives fodder to the speculation that humans who share the covers with their furred family members are more likely to become ill. While this is certainly more of a possibility with immunosuppressed humans (HIV-positive, transplant recipients, or chemotherapy patients, for example), there are no explicit Photo credit: twitter

This beautiful German Shepard cross is 18 months old and has been spayed, vaccinated, micro chipped and has a passport. She is a beautiful dog, lovely markings and temperament. warnings on this issue beyond the standard warnings for these groups of people. In fact, when it comes to infectious disease transmission, physicians and veterinarians agree there is scant evidence that healthy, well cared for pets are detrimental to human health under these circumstances. Indeed, human family members are much more likely to transmit diseases to each other during bed-sharing than our pets are. Some veterinarians also believe that allowing dogs to sleep on human beds is a not a good thing, behaviourally speaking. Puppies that are more prone to issues with aggression may fully develop these behaviours when allowed to sleep with humans. To reduce the health risks associated with bed sharing and other close contact with a pet, the CDC recommends that pets have regular veterinary care. This should include keeping up to date with vaccinations, treating illnesses with medications, and using flea and tick preventives, since often fleas and ticks carry bacteria and diseases that can also be transmitted to people.

SEAT Arona engine range ENGINE AND gearbox options are largely adopted from SEAT’s supermini line-up – all are turbocharged units and have stop/start technology. Three petrol engines are offered from launch: a 95bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder, linked to a fivespeed manual box, while a 115bhp version is available with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG auto. A 148bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine features cylinder deactivation to help reduce fuel consumption, and comes only with a six-speed manual gearbox. The only diesel in the Arona is a 1.6-litre engine with 95bhp or 115bhp. VALDIGNA GOLF Wayne to no longer SOCIETY – MONTHLY ‘Roo’ England fans STABLEFORD PERFECT weather for golf, being slightly cooler than previous days, greeted the players for the monthly Stableford competition at the La Galiana Club de Golf located between Tavernes and Alzira. The golf was of an excellent standard and the putting was red hot which led to a very close match overall. There were no points separating the top three and the final result was based on the player’s handicap. Special thanks went to Mark for volunteering to reduce his handicap after a number of recent wins but nevertheless still came in with a very respectable 31 points. The results were as follows, with members first: 1st - Pat Bradden (35 points - playing off 18), 2nd - Les Mason (35 - 20) and 3rd Trevor Nash (35 – 26). 4th spot went to Don Cubbon scoring 34 points and playing off 33.
Guests scores: 1st - Dan Meek (29 – 18), 2nd - Nick Lock (28 10). Nearest the pins: Trevor Nash on the 3rd, Tigger ‘the tree iron specialist’ on the 5th, Hans Benzler 14th, Carl Randall 15th & 16th, and Don Cubbon 17th. Longest Drive on the 11th hole (in 2) went to Paul Beamish-Knight and on the 12th (using only a 3 wood) went to Carl Randall. Finally only 68 balls in total were given up to La Galiana which made Steve Arnold €27 better off! Mayweather vs McGregor: What, when who? Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor arrived in Las Vegas earlier this week, the stage is set and we are ready for a fight expected to break all kinds of box office records. After several months of training and trashtalking, Mayweather vs McGregor will take place tomorrow night – in the early hours of Sunday morning to us. The once-retired all-time great boxer Mayweather will take on UFC’s biggest star McGregor with thousands watching at the
T-Mobile arena and millions more watching around the world. While the times haven’t been announced, the main event begins at 5.00am Spanish time, but the fight itself may start closer to 6.00am. Bookies immediately predicted a Mayweather win. William Hill put the veteran fighter at 1/11 favourite. He’s now 2/9 at the time of printing. Oddsmaker Nick Bogdanovich told the British press the odds would be even more lopsided if it wasn’t for the deluge of small bets expected to come in from UFC fans on their fighter. “Realistically if we were just putting up a number and didn’t have to take bets on it, Floyd would be 1/100,” Bogdanovich said. “But this will be a very, very big betting fight for sure, one of the biggest ever.”
Wayne Rooney @WayneRooney Dreams can come true and playing for @England has been exactly that. Thanks to everyone involved it´s been amazing -
HE MADE his debut for England in 2003 and 119 appearances and a national record of 53 goals later, Wayne Rooney has closed the curtain on his international career by his own choice. He said in a statement: "It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches. I really appreciated that. "However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football. It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me. "Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped me. But I believe now is the time to bow out. "Leaving Manchester United was a tough call but I know I made the right decision in coming home
to Everton. Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful. I will always remain a passionate England fan. "One of my very few regrets is not to have been part of a successful England tournament side. Hopefully the exciting players Gareth is bringing through can take that ambition further and I hope everyone will get behind the team. “One day the dream will come true and I look forward to being there as a fan - or in any capacity."

Schumacher junior drives for his dad MICHAEL Schumacher’s teenage son Mick (above) will mark the 25th anniversary of the German’s first Formula One victory by driving demonstration laps in a 1994 Benetton at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. Sabine Kehm, a manager for both father and son,
said that the 18-year-old would be at the wheel before Sunday’s race at Spa-Francorchamps. Schumacher, the seventime world champion who suffered severe head injuries in a skiing accident in France in 2013, made his breakthrough win - the first of a record 91 career victories - at the Belgium circuit on August 30 1992. Spa was a special place for the German, who won the 1994 and 1995 crowns with Benetton before five titles in a row with Ferrari from 2000-04. This weekend’s Belgian race could also see one of his records equalled, with
Mercedes driver and triple world champion Lewis Hamilton needing one pole position to match the German’s unprecedented 68. Now 48 years old, the most successful driver in the sport’s history has not been seen in public since his accident, with the family closely guarding his privacy at their home in Switzerland. Mick Schumacher is working his way through the junior motor racing series and is currently competing in European Formula Three after a debut in Formula Four.
