Wash and arrested by Glenn Scott TWO PEOPLE have been arrested in Alicante-Elche Airport for attempted smuggling. Guardia Civil officers detained a 30-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman – both holding Brazilian nationality – when they were found in possession of just over eight kilograms of liquid cocaine. Customs officers based in the area that controls international arrivals to AlicanteElche via Madrid became suspicious of the behaviour of a young woman awaiting to collect her baggage. They saw that she was travelling with a young man and each one eventually picked up their suitcases and headed for the green area. They were stopped by the officers who after checking the labels that indicated their journey began in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil decided to interview them separately to verify the

WAS IT WORTH IT?: Liquid cocaine discovered in shampoo bottles reasons for their visit to Spain and how long they planned to stay. Discrepancies in the interviews linked to the demeanour of the suspects led the officers to x-ray the cases where each contained a similar suspicious shape.

They found the shapes to be the flexible cool bags taken to the beach, but in this case it wasn’t water or a few cans of beer kept cold but a selection of bottles containing shampoo, cream and mouthwash which raised the suspicions further. Extra inspec-

tion of the containers revealed that they all held liquid cocaine which was planned to get through customs controls without being detected. The two offenders have already been sent to prison on the orders of a judge in an Elche court.

TESTING ONE’S PATIENCE: The strikes will mean delays and even cancellations across some of the country’s busiest holiday periods

Will they, won’t they? by Tahnee Wright THE Spanish government has scheduled more talks with airport unions to avoid the proposed 25 days of strikes. The strikes were announced in May by CC.OO., UGT and USE unions across all Aena airports if workers’ demands over salaries and rights were not addressed before mid-August. However, the secretary of State Infrastructure, Transport and Living, Julio Gomez-Pomar, said after this Tuesday’s (August 29) meeting that both sides are willing to reach an agreement.

He also said the state needed more time to fully respond to the unions’ requests as it affects various governmental bodies. The Secretary General of the CC. OO. union, Francisco Casado, said the workers’ demands are fair and “adequate.” The next meeting is scheduled for next Thursday (September 7) but the proposed strikes would run from September 15 to December 30. The full list of planned strikes is as follows: • September: 15, 17, 22, 24 and 29 • October; 1, 6, 11, 15, 27, 30 and 31

• November: 3 and 5 • December: 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 In Spain, Aena manages 46 airports (including Alicante-Elche, Murcia-San Javier and Valencia) and two heliports and saw 230.2 million passengers pass through its airports in 2016. It made a net profit of €1,164 million in the same year. If the strikes go ahead they will have adverse effects on Spain’s busy national bank holidays in October, November and December including the Christmas period.

It’s a pain in the joints Women suffer the most with 75 per cent which is 15 per cent more than men and most of them, 58 per cent, put up with the mild pain which they define as sporadic pain brought on by certain movements. Back pain is the most prevalent with 51 per cent of cases reported, followed by feet with 31 per cent and knees with 28 per cent.

A SURVEY commissioned by a food supplement company has highlighted the amount of people in the region of Murcia suffering from joint pain. Announcing the results, Vanir said that 68 per cent of the population of Murcia between the ages of 35 and 65 have had pains in one or more of their joints in the past year.

Return to school costs

AS THE schools go back in Murcia during the coming weeks, the average amount of money spent by families on each child has been revealed. According to an online survey conducted by Ofertia.com, the average cost in the region will be €440 and is only second to the Balearic Islands who are well ahead with €588. Oftertia makes the point that the annual return to school period is

A STREET in Murcia has been declared the area with the most expensive homes in the region. According to a study undertaken by ‘Marketplace’, the Avenida Vía Alfonso X El Sabio de Murcia features homes that are currently on the market for an average price of €555,385. Despite this amount, the region of Murcia is the fourth lowest among the autonomous communities throughout Spain, beating those registered by Navarra with €546,167, La Rioja (€530,786) and Extremadura the lowest on the list with €397,564. For the purposes of this particular study, ‘Marketplace’ has studied the av-

erage price of all types of housing (flats, studios, penthouses, villas) advertised for sale on the same street. To avoid fluctuations in the results, only those streets with a minimum of 10 properties for sale were taken into account. Therefore, the study only shows the average prices for the particular street. At the other end of the scale is an urbanisation found along the coast from Marbella on the Costa del Sol. Owners on La Zagaleta in Benahavís are asking for an average €5,611,875 for anyone wanting to buy one of these luxury villas. Neighbourhoods in Madrid and Barcelona also feature streets where the average asking price is around the €5m mark.

one of the most important financially for parents with school age children as it’s a major spending outlay just at the end of the summer holidays which is always naturally an expensive time. A total of 1,450 people took part in the survey and revealed that 68 per cent of Spaniards planned the forthcoming expenditure before the summer which includes school textbooks, stationery supplies and uniforms.

Early loan pay off THE COUNCIL of San Miguel de Salinas has been able to pay off a series of loans faster than anticipated. Within the next few weeks the outstanding amount of €58,000 that remains unpaid on the loan, that was taken out especially to pay suppliers will be settled and thus save an estimated €400,000 in interest payments. It was believed that it would take five years to pay back the original figure of just under €2,000,000 but with a series of budgetary constraints and sensible management of the funds available, the council has been able to reach this point. San Miguel de Salinas has also been able to reduce its annual IBI Tax and has seen it reduced by 13 per cent since 2013.

Botulism outbreak fears Photo credit: npr

by Steve Collins

Graffiti artists target protected buildings

ECOLOGISTS in Elche have warned of the risk of an outbreak of botulism in El Hondo. This has been due to the lack of water in local reservoirs, and the Friends of the Wetlands (AHSA) organisation have called for those in Levante and Poniente to be completely drained and cleaned. According to the environmental group, the high temperatures experienced during the summer resulted in higher than usual evaporation levels and an increased demand from agricultural land for irrigation from the reservoirs. This left a large number of dead fish that could lead to an onset of botulism. The dead fish were removed, but only the complete drying out of both reservoirs to eliminate

the common carp population would help reduce further risks. The vicious circle continues as the lack of water leads to the eventual lack of underwater vegetation which in

LOCAL POLICE in Murcia have been cracking down on the amount of graffiti. During the first seven months of the year and part of a dedicated anti-graffiti team, they have fined a total of 123 people – an average of 17 per month – including 10 cases brought to court for damaging protected buildings. Some of those registered were carried out against the Palacio Almodóvar, Plaza Santo Domingo, and on the Casa Díaz-Cassou, found in Calle Santa Teresa. The more serious cases of graffiti that end up in front of the judge include those against municipal buildings and where an inordinate amount of damage has been done. Many of the cases are handled by the juvenile prosecution service. Depending on the time it takes to clean up after the graffiti artists and the cost involved, the fines can amount from €150 to €500. The higher fines are levied if the damaged areas are marble or granite walls which are the hardest to clean.

turn affects the food cycle of numerous water-based birds. This has led to the deaths of thousands of waterfowl from episodes of avian botulism linked to where the dead fish are found.

Grant for local repair projects THE PROVINCIAL council in Alicante has granted a subsidy of €5,500 to Benejúzar towards a series of local projects. Many municipalities throughout the area have benefitted from similar investments following a series of submissions outlining their urban plans for 2017. In the case of Benejúzar, found on the road between Guar-

damar and Orihuela, this year’s grant will go towards work in some of the forestry and park areas which include the repair and upkeep of the roads and tracks, as well as new picnic tables, rubbish containers, compost bins and signposting. This follows on from last year’s project where the grant went to the installing of water pipes and irrigation.

by Lynn Whittaker GROUPS of unhappy residents living in the Orihuela Costa have booed their mayor. Emilio Bascuñana suffered the wrath of the locals as he attended the beginning of the ninth stage of the Vuelta de España where he was greeted with not only the verbal outbursts but a number of posters and banners. Some of those present remarked that the mayor looked uncomfortable being in that atmosphere as he cut the ceremonial tape that started the race. The banners, translated from Spanish, con-

tained phrases such as “High Taxes – Bad Services”, “More Money for the Orihuela Costa”, “Campoamor Abandoned” and “Segregation from Orihuela Now!”. Residents have for some time been complaining at the cut of €1,000,000 in the budget for general cleaning and rubbish collection and the alleged scarcity of many of the services other areas take for granted. The loud and high profile protest was deemed a success by the organisers, and it certainly caught the attention of the cyclists and the organisers of the event as they prepared for the start of the race.

Teenage thieves caught in the act LOCAL POLICE in Murcia have arrested two young children for stealing toys and other items from the FICA exhibition centre based on Avenida Primero de Mayo de Murcia. Two boys, aged 17 and 13 were surprised by police carrying out a regular patrol after breaking into a parked car at 3am and were seen running away with their arms laden with boxes that contained toys and a selection of sweets. T h e younger of the two boys detained was taken back home to face the wrath of his mother; the 17-year-old was taken to the local police station in Carmen where he was charged with stealing with force. The stolen items were later returned to their rightful owner.

Rains cause road chaos THE HEAVY rainfall along the Costa Blanca and all points inland affected the Murcia region more than most. There were four traffic accidents in one day on Wednesday which left a total of nine people injured, including one child. The incidents began in the morning when a car fell off a viaduct after leaving the motorway on the way to La Manga. Despite the accident, the woman was able to get out of her vehicle and walk away unhurt. In the village of Blanca, a man and a woman had

to be rescued by firefighters after he left the road and crashed into a tree. Both occupants were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Four people, including a 16-year-old boy, were injured in a crash between a SUV and a car at the roundabout joining La Alcayna and Molina road. Later that afternoon two people, aged 37 and 57, were injured on the RM-F55 road which links Torreciega and the industrial estate at Cabezo Beaza. One of the two vehicles involved in the accident overturned and two people were taken to hospital.

Consequences of playing with fire AROUND 40 residents of an apartment block in Torrevieja had to be evacuated due to a fire. The blaze broke out in Calle San Pascual and it’s believed it was started by a young girl playing with a cigarette lighter who

accidentally set fire to a mattress. When the fire brigade arrived they immediately discovered the seat of the fire in the third floor of the building and that thick smoke had started to build up.

This prompted the decision to evict the entire building of residents that included an 87-yearold man who had to be helped to the ground floor by members of the emergency services. Once the building was empty,

firefighters extinguished the blaze but three neighbours – one of them a child – and a member of the Guardia Civil had to be treated for the effects of smoke inhalation. All are reported to be fully recovered.

ALICANTE-ELCHE Airport has registered their largest ever August rainfall since records began 50 years ago. A total of 42.1 litres per square metre of water fell in the 24 hour period on Tuesday which saw many other parts of the Costa Blanca reporting damage caused by the storm conditions. In the same week that the UK registered its hottest ever August Bank Holiday Mon-

day and Houston, Texas in the USA recording its highest ever rainfall – possibly the highest ever throughout the country too – Alicante-Elche broke the record that has stood since 1974, according to information supplied by the State Meteorological Office (AEMET). That stood at 32 litres per square metre; the average for the entire month of August for Alicante is 51 litres per m2.

MYSTERIOUS: Did an insect impregnate the Lady of Elche?

by Glenn Scott ELCHE’S most famous piece of sculpture, La Dama de Elche (The Lady of Elche) has become the subject of a Twitter debate. A visitor to the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid was looking at the iconic bust kept inside a case when all of a sudden he noticed an ant crawling over the glass. He immediately started to film the insect on his mobile phone and placed it on his social media accounts. He also sent a tweet wondering how this was possible as the display case is supposed to be hermetically sealed from the outside elements. The visitor, tweeting under the name of JColosus (@MisterAllnut), raised his concern with one of the officials at the museum but alleg-

edly didn’t receive an adequate explanation. Needless to say, his tweet received immediate reaction with 91 retweets and 58 likes in a matter of hours. The main complaint questioned the way the heritage of Elche is being treated. This latest issue comes at a time when the controversy over the return of the bust to its home in Elche in which the mayor, Carlos González, has asked for a temporary transfer for the second half of 2018. The mayor has asked for an explanation as to how the seal had been breached by this ant from the National Archaeological Museum. Interestingly, RTN checked out the Twitter account at the centre of this story and found that although the account was genuine, the tweet appeared to have been deleted.

Club brawlers arrested

A FIGHT that broke out in a club in El Altet resulted in three arrests. The brawl started in an establishment on Avenida de Cartagena de El Altet after an argument in which customers objected to the behaviour of two people continually abusing members of staff and other users. The resulting fight, using bottles and other objects close to hand, ended up with one of those injured being taken to hospital suffering from eye injuries and requiring emergency surgery to prevent a loss of their sight. By the time police arrived, the two people had fled the premises but with accurate descriptions being given by witnesses, they were soon stopped in their car on the N-332 near El Altet where they also had suffered their own injuries in the fight.

Airport gets overnight transport links

Sporting facilities get extended hours

TORREVIEJA’S councillor for sport, Víctor Ferrández, has announced that the municipal sports facilities will be open for longer from September. This includes evenings and weekends and is thanks entirely to the town hall giving a number of new workers an opportunity as part of a youth employment initiative. The football pitches and racket sports zones will now be open on a Sunday from 8am to 9pm – an extra seven hours – and the gymnasium will no longer close at lunchtimes, remaining open on a Monday to Friday between 9am and 10pm. Saturday hours will be from 9am to 7pm. Ferrández said that there are also plans to extend the opening hours for the indoor swimming pool and they will hopefully be announced before the end of the year.

HAPPY TRAVELLERS: Alicante-Elche now has 24 hour transport links

by Ray Chadwick RTN HIGHLIGHTED last week that Alicante-Elche Airport lacked any overnight transport links and meant travellers faced queues of more than an hour for a taxi. As we went to press, it was announced that a bus service would be introduced and began to operate on Monday. Up until then, the last bus heading

for the city of Alicante left at midnight, but with more and more flights arriving overnight it was exposing the shortage of onward transport, especially with restrictions on the amount of taxis able to operate from the airport. Since overnight on Monday, travellers can get a bus to Alicante city centre at 12.20am, 1.20, 2.20, 3.20, and 4.20. Services leave from the city to the airport at on the hour from 1am to 5am.

Alicante-Elche has now joined the other major cities across Spain that has public transport links for 24-hours a day alongside Madrid, Barcelona and Palma, Majorca. Representatives from the tourist organisations had complained that nobody should have to wait so long to continue their journey after arriving at the airport, giving a bad impression of the area and the country in general.

Speeding slowly slowing down

FINAL figures have been revealed by the traffic authorities in Murcia following the recent speed campaign, and there are signs of improvement. During the seven days from August 21 to 27, a total of 1,763 drivers were caught speeding out of the 26,136 vehicles controlled that represent a level of 6.74 per cent. This compares to an overall percentage of 8.46 during the same campaign held in 2016 although 12 months ago around 10,000 less drivers were monitored. Virginia Jerez, the provincial traffic chief, said: “We must not only raise awareness and inform road users about the legal obligation to comply with the speed limits, but it is necessary to remind them of the occasional fatal consequences of driving at such speed.”

Gota Fria warning

False claims company loses licence

by Glenn Scott AT THIS time of the year, and especially in the wake of the recent set of storms and heavy rainfall, locals with long memories begin to recall the weather phenomena known as the Gota Fria (literally ‘Cold Drip’ in English). As David Hudson from the Torrevieja Classic Car Club reminds us, unless you’ve experienced firsthand the real effects of a Gota Fria you won’t be prepared for what will happen. “The Gota Fria is when a cold front from the Atlantic hits a prolonged pe-

riod of exceptional hot summer. This happens during September until the middle of October. The last big Gota Fria was in 1987 when it destroyed the road system in the Vega Baja and the roads now in existence date from that point. Before that, in 1976, it devastated buildings in and around Orihuela and on both occasions lives were lost,” said David. “All the signs are there that this area is due for another Gota Fria. “It is the speed and volume of water that is the danger. You can have three feet of water in an hour. It doesn’t matter how good the drainage system is because

the volume of water causes an air lock and that’s when the flooding happens. Underground car parks present a danger in these storms so the advice if the water rushes in quickly is to get out and leave your car for the insurance. As David confirms: “People have died trying to get their car out. The big danger is staying in your car when the water is rising quickly. Your car does not make a good boat.” A free leaflet covering the problems associated with a Gota Fria and some of the solutions is available via e-mail at clasicos600@yahoo.co.uk

A firm responsible for pressuring people into making holiday-sickness claims has had its licence stripped by the Claims Management Regulator. Intelligence gathered by the Claims Management Regulator (CMR) officers revealed that Lancashire based Allsure Ltd had encouraged holiday-goers to fabricate or embellish symptoms of gastric illness to get compensation. Further evidence showed the firm had used deceptive sales scripts, exaggerating expected pay-outs to entice consumers. This conduct has led to the firm’s licence being cancelled. This means that it can no longer offer regulated claims management services to new or existing clients. Kevin Rousell, Head of the Claims Management Regulator said: “We will take firm action against claims businesses which engage in serious miscon-

duct. Seeking to encourage false claims will not be tolerated.” CMR, based at the Ministry of Justice, regulates companies that offer to help people claim compensation for issues such as personal injury and missold financial products. The action taken against Allsure Ltd is the latest in a series of moves by government to crackdown on fake sickness claims, following concerns from the travel industry of a surge in insurance claims for gastric illnesses like food poisoning being brought by British holidaymakers. In July ministers stepped in to reduce cash incentives in bringing spurious claims against package holiday tour operators. Under these proposals tour operators would pay a prescribed sum depending on the value of the claim, making the cost of defending a claim predictable.

Pension cold calling banned The UK government has confirmed new measures to protect private pension savers from the threat of unscrupulous pension scammers. The measures will include a ban on cold calling in relation to pensions, including emails and text messages and a tightening of HMRC rules to stop scammers opening fraudulent pension schemes. The cold calling ban will be enforced by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and will also see tougher actions to help prevent the transfer of money from occupational pension schemes into fraudulent ones. The government is also tackling scammers by ensuring that only active companies, which produce regular, upto-date accounts, can register pension schemes. Limiting transfers of pension pots from one occupational scheme to another will mean trustees must check their receiving scheme is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, or has an active employment link with the individual, or is an authorised master trust. The announcement comes as new

figures released show almost £5 million was obtained by pension scammers in the first five months of 2017. It is estimated that £43 million has also been unlawfully obtained by scammers since April 2014, with those targeted having lost an average of nearly £15,000, as scammers try to encourage savers to part with their money with false promises of low-risk, high-return investment opportunities. Minister for Pensions and Financial Inclusion Guy Opperman said: “These figures highlight the extent to which people’s savings are being targeted and stolen through elaborate hoaxes – leaving them with little opportunity to build up their savings again. That is why we are introducing tough new measures for those who scam. “If people have saved for a private pension, we want to protect them. This is the biggest lifesaving that individuals normally make over many years of hard work. By tackling these scammers, people should know that cold calling, apart from exceptional circumstances, is banned.”

BLOCKED: Concatedral de San Nicolás on a quieter day.

Voyages to the bottom of the Med DURING a space of 24 hours in October 1917, five ships were torpedoed off the coast of La Manga between Cabo de Palos and Isla Grosa. Now, in their final resting places for almost 100 years, a new generation of people will get to see them as part of a series of diving tours. The Tordhisa (Norway), Doris (Italy), Alavi (UK) and the Despina Michelinos (Greece) were sunk by a Ger-

man U35 submarine in the middle of World War I. One year later the Francolí freighter from Spain suffered a similar fate at the hands of a UB49. The wrecks are found between 40 and 100 metres deep and very close to each other, and it’s hoped that once word gets around they will attract the serious divers from around the world to see this unique underwater scene.

Dogs welcome to take their owners shopping POPULAR department store El Corte Inglés has allowed customers to bring their dogs to one of their branches. The El Corte Inglés based in Cartagena will now permit dogs of any size, shape and breed to accompany their owners on shopping trips on the proviso they are under full control and on a lead. The pets will be allowed in all parts of the store with the exception of the supermarket section for reasons of hygiene. El Corte Inglés say they don’t know if this initiative will increase the number of pet-owning customers coming through their doors, although they do believe that it will encourage people who would normally choose not to leave their dogs home alone to spend a few hours shopping with them.

A HUSBAND living in Santa Pola was happily having a Sunday morning lie-in when his wife screamed out that there was a snake in their living room. Immediately, Jeff McDonald thought it was some crafty scheme by his wife Sarah to get him out of his bed so he just stayed where he

was. When she shouted again, he took the situation a little more seriously and shot out of bed and rushed into the sitting room to be confronted by a five-foot long, one inch wide red and white snake about to sneak under a cupboard. As Jeff told the RTN: “I’d never seen a snake that big before and I immediately called the police. When they arrived, not even they would touch

ter removing some of the large plant pots that block the way. The official place for loading and unloading is only a few metres away – in Calle Miguel Soler – but the space is very small and is currently affected by building works. Because many of the bars and the restaurants in the vicinity don’t open until 11am, the majority of the delivery drivers arrive after then and until 1pm and there can be, on occasions, a steady stream arriving. This means that tourists are made to wait to take their pictures without the accompanying vehicles. One of the local restaurant owners said: “I hope that the City Council doesn’t start to fine the drivers as there are more important problems such as cleaning and pickpockets that need action first. In this area we have also seen rats and I think that is much worse than a few delivery drivers.”

MILK SNAKE: A rude awakening in Santa Pola

TOURISTS in a part of Alicante have complained that delivery drivers are affecting their ability to take selfies! Groups of tourists that are keen to take photographs of themselves with the famous door of the Concatedral de San Nicolás in the background find that they have to include a delivery van in the image while it’s unloading. There are a number of bars and restaurants in the Plaza del Abad Penalva area and there are only a limited number of places where vans and small lorries can drop off their merchandise. Complaints have also been made by a number of tour guides that the noise of the vans makes them difficult to hear as they explain the history of the iconic building to their groups. The exact location for the entrance of the Concatedral is in a pedestrian zone, but it’s accepted that vans access the area af-

Diving tourism shows no signs of sinking by Ray Chadwick MORE tourists are using the diving facilities available along the coastal region of Murcia. The popularity of the pastime to discover some of the beauty hidden under the local part of the Mediterranean is growing year after year, so much so that it’s predicted to rise by 10 per cent this season. President of the local business association, Daniel Martinez, puts much of the increase down to the amount of foreign visitors looking to try out a new skill or looking to add this area of Spain to their list of diving experiences. Almost 24 per cent of divers come from the UK, France, Germany, Holland, and the Nordic countries. The rest come from Murcia, Madrid, Valencia, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla León and Andalucía. Diving is a growing enterprise in the region with 25 authorised centres employing 400 people and a further 2,000 indirect jobs rely on the activity. Further job creation in the sector is predicted as the popularity grows. It’s estimated that every diver spends around €120 per day that goes not only in the pockets of the diving business owners but to those in local hotels, bars, restaurants and supermarkets.

Puppy mill mothers rescued Making a total of 16 recently rescued, Pets in Spain animal charity has taken in three more puppy farm mothers from an illegal puppy mill. Made to endure a life of just pregnancy and producing puppies, they were kept in cages in a filthy outdoor shed all of their lives and forcibly impregnated every six months to produce puppies to sell. Now aged between five and seven-years-old they were to be discarded due to ill health and taken to be put down. Pets in Spain animal charity collaborates with animal groups in Spain to free these used and abused puppy mothers and fathers who are treated like machines, and take them into foster homes, provide

them with all necessary veterinary treatment, care and rehabilitation. One of these mothers has tumours in her mammary glands; this occurs frequently in un-spayed female dogs. Another has proved positive for Leishmaniasis, and when they are well enough all will need surgery which will include sterilisation. An appeal for donations to help the charity fund veterinary treatment for rescued puppy farm dogs has been launched. Pets in Spain is a registered charity in Spain run entirely by volunteers, and they do not receive any local or regional government funding. Charity registration CIF No. G-54669262

Car thieves spotted by owner’s friend THREE TEENAGERS were arrested for stealing a car that had been left with the keys in the ignition. They were stopped by officers from the Guardia Civil on Paseo Ramón Gaya in Murcia after receiving a call to the 092 number by someone who recognised the car as belonging to a friend. He told them that he’d seen four young people in the car and he eventually managed to restrain one of the boys but the other three fled the scene. Thanks to the accurate description given two more were arrested but a third was still on the run. Those arrested were 16 and 17-years-old and had Polish, Georgian and Spanish nationalities. They were taken to the police station in El Carmen where they were charged with the alleged vehicle theft.

by Rose Holmes Half a million people marched in Barcelona in a show of unity under the slogan no tinc por (I am not afraid) after Catalonia’s recent terror attacks. The march last Saturday was led by shopkeepers and residents of the city’s Las Ramblas boulevard, where a van ploughed into pedestrians on August 17, killing 13 people and injuring over 100. The crowd applauded emergency services representatives who also led the march, along with taxi drivers who helped evacuate people at

the time of the attacks. Spain’s King Felipe, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and the head of Catalonia’s regional government Carles Puigdemont walked amongst the throng as people cheered and bore red, yellow and white roses — the colours of the nation’s second-biggest city. “We are here to say we’re not afraid, we are united and we want peace,” a pensioner said as she marched. Slogans carried by marchers read “No to Islamophobia” and “The best answer: peace”. Members of Spain’s Islamic community marched alongside the king

and the prime minister, including women wearing hijabs. Speakers gave readings next to a floral display with the words “Barcelona” and “I am not afraid” in different languages including Arabic. In addition to the 13 killed by the van, two others were killed during the driver’s getaway and in a separate car and knife attack in the Cat-

alan coastal resort of Cambrils. A 51-year-old German woman died this week after being treated in a critical condition in hospital, but It is not yet clear which of the attacks she was injured in Police said they believed a 12man terror cell had planned and carried out the attacks. Dáesh fighter mocked on Spanish Twitter AN Islamic State fighter has become the unlikely target of Spanish social-media ridicule after threatening Spain that more attacks would follow those in Catalonia. Twitter users responded to an Islamic State video by turning the young Spanish-speaking jihadist into a meme that was among the social-media site's most popular ‘trending topics’. In one, the bearded jihadist becomes a YouTube blogger asking for viewers to like - and subscribe to - his channel. In another, he raps along to a reggaeton track dubbed the "official Dáesh remix." "When you see me, I know you're trembling," the fighter raps in a version of Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny's hit Tu No Metes Cabra (You Don't Scare Me). In the original video, the fighter said the Islamic State would avenge

Muslims killed in the 15th-century Spanish Inquisition and rebuild "Al Andalus," the medieval Muslim territory that occupied most of modern Spain and Portugal. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks on August 17 and 18, in which jihadists in a van mowed crowds down on Barcelona's Las Ramblas and then later assaulted the Catalan seaside resort of Cambrils. The Spanish media, citing police sources, have identified the fighter as 22-year-old Muhammad Yasin Ahram Perez, born in the southern Spanish city of Cordoba, who moved to Syria to join Islamic State in 2014 with his mother and brothers. One popular meme with the fighter, known as "El Cordobes," referred to a Spanish online backlash last year against British chef Jamie Oliver for attempting to remake paella, by adding muscles

and chorizo. "An authentic paella is made WITHOUT seafood," the fighter is quoted saying in the tweet's caption.

in Madrid last week. An investigation into the cell’s possible international links is ongoing. According to reports in the Spanish press, the cell had planned a much bigger attack, with possible targets including the Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí’s much-loved, half-finished church in Barcelona.

British antique thief arrested in Spain A BRITISH man has been arrested in Spain on suspicion of stealing a collection of ancient Roman artefacts from Italy. The 55-year-old man was arrested in a hotel in Los Palacios y Villafranca, south of Seville, after police conducted a routine security check on guests. His name came up on a database and showed that an Italian court had issued a warrant for his arrest. He was in possession of “very valuable collector’s items” for which he was unable to show proof of ownership, a spokeswoman for the Spanish police said. They included 90 packets of Roman and Arab coins, six clay lamps and a ceramic image of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. In total, there were around 140 valuable antiques. Spanish police said their investigation was still ongoing because “the suspect may have accomplices or colleagues helping him in the antiques trade”.

Priest resigns over Hindu statue episode CEUTA priest Juan Jose Mateo has been made to step down after allowing a large statue of the Hindu god Ganesh to be carried into the Santuario de Santa Maria de Africa parish church and placed at the foot of a statue of the Virgin Mary. Bishop Rafael Zornoza has expressed his "deep pain for this deplorable episode, which has caused confusion, damage and scandal within the Christian community". Meanwhile the Hindu community in the Spanish enclave comprising approximately 800 followers has said it cannot

understand the reproof for an "act of coexistence" between religions. Last Sunday, the community marked the birth of Ganesh with a procession through the city to the sea. "For the last eight years we have made a stop at the Santuario de Santa María de Africa as an act of reverence because we also consider her to be the city's patron saint. We do not understand the condemnation of the priest," the president of the Hindu community in Ceuta, Ramesh Chandiramani, told the Spanish press.

Juana Rivas may face prison despite handing children over to father

by Fabio Delucci After spending almost a month in hiding, Juana Rivas handed her children over to the authorities earlier this week but may still face prison. The Public Prosecutor has asked for prison without bail for ignoring a court summons despite a previous judge allowing Ms Rivas to walk free. After being told by the Granada court that any decision concerning custody of her children must be made by the Italian authorities, Juana Rivas accepted and voluntarily surrendered her two children to the Guardia Civil on Monday morning. They were collected by

their Italian father, Francesco Arcuri, later that day. The couple met in 2004 in London where 23-year-old Ms Rivas was learning English and Mr Arcuri, who was 38, was managing a restaurant. They had two children and later settled in Sardinia but Ms Rivas returned to Spain in May last year - taking the children without her husband’s consent, claiming he had attacked her mentally and physically and also abused their eldest son. Ms Rivas has described herself as being trapped in the Italian countryside, living in fear of an abusive partner. But Mr Arcuri, who claims his ex-partner was constantly

out partying in San Pietro and leaving him to attend to most of the parental duties, says Spanish public opinion has unjustly turned against him. A Swiss woman, identified as S.M, who was Mr Arcuri's partner for 10 years, has said she does "not believe for one second that he has mistreated his wife and kids". Campaigners have made Ms Rivas a symbol of Spain's battle against gender violence, which sees an average of 60 women killed each year by their partners or ex-partners. But Francesco Arcuri insists he is the victim of a media frenzy that has distorted their relationship, cast him as the villain and deprived him of seeing his children.

112-year-old Spanish man claims ‘World’s Oldest Man’ title 112 YEARS and eight months of age, boasting four children, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, Francisco Nunez Olivera from the village of Bienvenida in Western Spain is laying claim to the title of the world’s oldest man. Born on December 13, 1904, Olivera told the Spanish press he reckons “good genes, hard work, a varied diet of homegrown vegetables and a daily glass of red wine” are the key ingredients to a long life. He has managed to maintain this routine despite losing his teeth four decades ago. “Until the age of 107 he used to walk the streets by himself. Whenever he got tired, he would rest in the corner, chatting away to people. He loves chatting,” his sister, Maria Antonia, 81, told the Spanish press. A widower since 1988, Olivera also claims he has never broken a bone, despite fighting in the Rif War in North Africa (1920-1926) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), affording him the title of Spain’s oldest veteran.

SMILE FOR THE CAMERA: Olivera lost his teeth four decades ago The Guinness Book of World Records has yet to officially recognise Olivera as the world’s oldest man because the originals of his birth certificate and other documentation from his local church and school were burnt in a fire during the civil war. However, El Mundo claims to have found copies of a wedding certificate which corroborate Olivera’s story. The previous titleholder of the

world’s oldest living man was Auschwitz survivor Yisrael Kristal, who passed away a month before his 114th birthday on August 11. There are over 17,000 people in Spain above the age of 100, 16 of whom are 110 years of age or over. The officially recognised oldest living woman in the world is Jamaica’s Violet Brown, who was born on March 10, 1900.

Thousands greet cycling champ TOUR DE FRANCE champion Chris Froome waited until he passed through the Costa Blanca to win his first stage of this year’s Vuelta de España. The man from Team SKY’s success allowed him to extend his overall lead in the race and retain the coveted red jersey. Froome pulled away from his rivals on the Puig Llorenca climb to win the stage by four seconds, and by adding bonus seconds he led by 36 seconds overall at that point. Thousands of residents and tourists flocked the streets and carriageways all along the route of the ninth stage that stretched from the start on the Orihuela Costa to watch the cycling spectacular. The route of the Vuelta religiously followed the N-332 passing through Torrevieja – although on the bypass and not through the town itself due to

policing issues – La Mata, Guardamar, La Marina, Santa Pola, El Altet, Alicante, Campello, Villajoyosa, Benidorm and on to the gruelling finish in the Cumbre del Sol in Benitatxell. At the time of going to press, Chris Froome is still leading the pack after he finished second on the 11th stage, 187.5km route from Lorca to Observatorio de Calar Alto. The second-place finish gained Froome six bonus seconds and took his overall advantage over his rivals to one minute 19 seconds. The three-time Tour de France winner is looking to add his name to the cycling history books by becoming over the third person to win the France and Spain challenges in the same year; if he’s successful, it will be the first time since 1978. The 2017 Vuelta de España finishes in Madrid on September 10.

The southern coast of Spain is a country within a country. Like London or New York, it exists alone, a law unto itself. It has its own rules and rhythm and its own way of doing things. On the morning of our story the coast awoke in a tepid daze, the Mediterranean flat as a dusty mirror, banks of low cloud drifting in over the chiringuitos and dampening the canopies of the hillside allotments. Down on the beaches the hammock-vendors sprayed the sand in the hope of one more hot day: they´d been enjoying an Indian summer. In Malaga, cars formed rushhours queues into the city while joggers stretched their calves on the low sea wall in Estepona. Shutters clattered up on the Nerja cafés. Benidorm doorsteps were swept and mopped. Smoking, sunburnt fishermen winched their nets up in La Caleta, gulls hovering yet still, hungry black eyes staring. High above the Malaga Mountains a twin-engine Cessna left a vectoring, everdiffusing trail of ice particles in its wake. A door was open on its glinting, sunlit, sea-ward side and a figure in black appeared, leaping suddenly out, spreadeagled, away from the plane. In Colmares, an elderly Brit who´d been up since five with gout pains, called out to a passing neighbour, an even older Spaniard, coming back from a walk. They put their hands to their brows and watched as a parachute opened and the bulky, twitching figure rocked from side to side until it meshed with the dark peaks. By then the mist had mostly cleared, the sun had risen and the Mediterranean was its usual brilliant, diamond-encrusted blue. “I´ll call the police,” old Ramón mumbled, tipping his stick and walking on. The cicadas had started. The day had broken. Our story was underway.

Return of the witchfinders by

Michael Walsh

It is a myth that the Victorians were prudish. Their age was exciting, innovative and libertarian. For this reason, many great novels and poems, such as Rudyard Kipling verse, is now taboo. Scratch the surface of the mob and one is sure to find the mediaeval mind-set. I would not dignify bigots by describing them as ignorant; they are politically corrupt. There is little that separates the selfstyled politically correct from sycophants who once applauded innocent men sentenced to death at Chairman Mao and Stalinist show trials. In the Communist Bloc ordinary people were guarded in what they wrote or said. In constant fear of denunciation few were brave enough to speak openly. Those who did lost friends, their jobs, and in most case their freedom. This is the slippery slope we slide down. A remark made without malice draws horrified reaction similar to the display of a birthmark on the breast of a yeoman’s wife. “Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness.” George Orwell. Attending a business meeting I said something which included the term ‘coloured’. The group looked at each other with horrified expressions. Baffled, I asked if I had said something wrong. Someone broke the silence. “You don’t use the term coloured anymore.” Defensively, I replied, “I have no objection to being described as white. The description was relevant to what I was saying; how else could I describe the person?” I was told that I must never describe a person by their ethnicity even if asked by the police to offer a description of a person. I am reminded of Prometheus: “whom the gods would destroy they first make mad.” A journalist in Germany receives a 6-month prison sentence for posting a picture of Hitler greeting Pal-

estinian President Haj Amin al-Hussein. In Britain, people receive police cautions for liking ‘politically incorrect’ posts on Facebook. There was a time when a man could pause to enjoy the sight of children playing. It would take a brave man to do so now. I recall a father photographing his daughter as his child played in a park. The hapless dad was invited to leave after women started calling him a paedophile. In the United States monuments to historical figures are brought crashing to the ground. Throughout the EU street names are changed because those honoured are considered politically incorrect. Yet, the most outrageous haters are witch finder generals and the mob salivating at the prospect of a lost career. Robert Burns: “Here's freedom to him who would speak; here’s freedom to him who would write; for there's none ever feared that the truth should be heard; save he who the truth would indict.”

It was one of those days when you could sense the spring in your step and the feeling that: ‘Hey, it’s not such a bad old life after all.’ The sun was shining as usual, and there was a cooling breeze that was just enough to make our morning walk along the canal perfect. A cyclist came hurtling towards us; a man of about my age, so no age at all really, clad in a spectacular outfit. Hat, shorts, shirt and even socks were a kaleidoscope of colour. He looked as if he had been decorated with Quality Street wrappers all stitched together by Stevie Wonder. As he got near, he waved at us in an enthusiastic way which had the effect of him partially losing control and bumping off into the overgrown area to one side. But with the big smile still on his face, he hopped back on, chortled ’Ooops’ and pedalled off like a streak of psychedelic lightning. The pair of ducks that sometimes patrolled that section of canal – Romeo and Juliet we christened them – had not been seen for some time, but there was Juliet with six fairly large, healthy looking ducklets. She and Romeo it seemed, had consummated the partnership and found a safe haven away from the dark intentions of any cleaver brandishing Chinese chef looking to

increase profits. The luxuriant weed growth providing food for the carp, swayed seductively in the current and it’s a pity that the periodic dredging destroys this stuff, driving the fish away. But it’s only temporary and here they are again, not that big by normal carp standards, but up to a kilo or two in weight if I’m any judge. Yet more temptation for unscrupulous restaurateurs, fed up with the escalating price of merluza. We exchanged pleasantries with other walkers and

Dead Woman Walking by Sharon Bolton A surprise hot air balloon trip is Jessie’s birthday gift to her beloved Isabel, her sister and a practicing nun. There are 13 people in the balloon, including the pilot, on this unluckiest of trips where a killer is observed in the act of committing murder. Unfortunately, he also sees them, particularly Jessie assiduously taking photographs of him on her phone. Everyone ends up dead except Jessie, something the killer intends to rectify as he hunts her down. Unable to go to the police, there is more to Jessie than we might expect as she fights to stay alive against all the odds. The remarkably well informed killer is an adept and skilled hunter, who it turns out has his own family trauma.

Detective Superintendent Ajax Maldonado of Northumbria police is in charge of investigating the Hot Air Balloon tragedy and when it becomes clear that Jessie is alive, tries to locate her to discover what occurred. With a rising body count, disturbing fears of a yellow house in the north amongst migrants, and the connections between the multiple threads becoming clearer, there is a thrilling and tense finale. This is a story of ghosts, trauma, obsession, unreliable memories and what families will do for each other. It outlines the horrors waiting to befall migrants and how a family history can come to be distorted. It is about the difficulties of coming to terms with loss and grief.

cyclists along the way, but there’s always one exception. An athletic looking lady with muscles on her teeth and blond hair tied back resembling a plaited loaf, approached. Pumping two ski poles and staring purposefully ahead, she was a formidable sight. With a glare that would have frozen lava and looking as if she wanted to singe off our hair before skewering us on her poles and spit roasting us, she charged on. And all we had said was: ‘Hi, lovely morning’. All in all though, one of those days when everything seemed right with the world.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Jane Cronin

For the few weeks we have been looking at the concepts of masculine and feminine genders in the Spanish language. We saw that a noun is a word that represents a thing or an idea and than in Spanish each of these words has a gender which we need to know about to help us form correct Spanish sentences. The gender of the noun in a sentence affects many of the words around it. We also looked at a few guidelines to help us determine what the gender of a particular noun is, but in many cases we just have to learn each one individually and gradually, knowing that if we make a few mistakes along the way it is not going to affect people’s understanding of what we say. One of the things that is affected by the gender of a word is the accompanying word for “the” and “a”. We are lucky in English as these words have only one form. “The” in Spanish actually has five forms, but only four that concern us now. These four words depend on whether they apply to masculine or feminine nouns and also whether the nouns are in the singular or plural. Let’s take a practical example – the word for “child” or “boy” – niño, and the word for “girl” which is niña. This is how the “the” bit works: El niño - the boy; la niña - the girl; los niños - the boys; las niñas - the girls. So we have four different words for “the” (masculine singular), la (feminine singular), los (masculine plural) and las (feminine plural). Now we’ll look at the words meaning “a” or “an”. There are two of these: masculine singular un and feminine singular una. Logically we cannot have a plural of “a”. So that gives us for example “a boy” un niño and “a girl” una niña. All of these forms apply to words for things as well. Let’s use two more examples of words for things rather than people. Vestido (dress – masculine) El vestido (the dress); los vestidos (the dresses); un vestido (a dress). Camisa (shirt – feminine). La camisa (the shirt); las camisas (the shirts); una camisa (a shirt). One of the indicators of word gender we have already mentioned is the characteristic “a” ending for feminine and

“o” ending for masculine nouns. Niño, niña, vestido, camisa all follow this pattern. However as I mentioned, there are other words that don’t do this at all. For example: Reloj (clock – masculine) El reloj (the clock); los relojes (the clocks); un reloj (a clock) Pared (wall – feminine) La pared (the wall); las paredes (the walls); una pared (a wall). Notice in both these cases the words end in consonants (j and d). When this happens we make the word into plural by adding –es, rather than just –s. Now to complete this picture let’s look again at a couple of words that have endings the opposite way round from what we expect, to see how they deal with this “agreement” business. Here they come: Problema (problem – masculine) El problema (the problem); los problemas (the problems), un problema (a problem). Mano (hand – feminine) La mano (the hand); las manos (the hands); una mano (a hand). Most foreigners learning Spanish get these wrong to start with. The Spanish are quite used to people saying things like “tengo una problema” and this kind of mistake would never prevent someone from understanding that you had a problem! Just to round this up and lead on to our main point for next lesson. There are other things that are affected by the masculine/ feminine divide as well as “the” and “a”. It also influences the adjectives, or describing words, that go with the nouns. Here is what I mean: the word from “small” is pequeño. It can be applied to all the above nouns. We can talk about a small boy, girl, shirt, dress, clock, wall, problem or hand. Here are some examples of how we would do this, by making the word pequeño match the noun each time. El niño pequeño; la niña pequeña; los niños pequeños; las niñas pequeñas. El vestido pequeño, los relojes pequeños, la camisa pequeña, las paredes pequeñas. Un problema pequeño, una mano pequeña. We will start off at this point next week, as there are plenty more things to say about adjectives. See you then.

Why I am so proud of Pride by Barry Duke I once bit a policeman’s leg. It was the only way I could break his grip on my long, auburn locks. This was at London’s third LGBT march in 1974. It was much more of an angry rally than a celebration. We mobilised to declare it was not acceptable to intimidate and brutalise queers and that we were no longer prepared to take persecution lying down. But lying down is precisely what we did. The authorities had agreed a march route with organisers but suddenly a large contingent of hostile plods decided to divert us down a side street. We were having none of it and lay down in the road. And that’s when I was seized by the hair by one of a clot of constables who moved in to break up our demo. Vivid memories of that rally came back to me when my diary flagged up the fact that Benidorm is to host its seventh Pride from September 4 – 9, and that RTN, to its credit, is partnering the event. An enormous rush of satisfaction came over me when I recalled how liberating it was, in those early days, to stand up – nay, lie down – and chant “we shall not be moved!” We were angry, and had a great deal to be angry about. In those days police harassment was endemic, and it was still fresh in many older protesters’ minds that Alan Turing, the gay codebreaker who played a pivotal role in enabling the Allies to defeat the Nazis in many crucial engagements, had been prosecuted for homosexuality in 1952. Turing – regarded today as the father of modern computing who broke the Nazis’ WW2 Enigma code – accepted chemical castration rather than face prison, and died of cyanide poisoning in 1954 aged 41. An inquest found he’d committed suicide. In 2009, following an Internet campaign then British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology on behalf of the government for “the appalling way he was treated”. The Queen granted him a posthumous pardon in 2013. Turing was one of thousand whose lives were blighted by a stupid and inhumane law, and, even after homosexuality was decriminalised in 1967, neofascist groups and religious hate-mongers like the ghastly Mary Whitehouse persisted with their gay-bashing – actual and verbal – well into the 1980s. But then a sea-change occurred that saw LGBT rights in the UK improve with astonishing speed. This welcome progress culminated with the introduction of same-sex marriage in 2014. The change in Spain was even more dramatic. The country rapidly became a world leader in gay rights after decades of Franco’s rule, which saw sexual minorities imprisoned or even killed. The legendary poet Garcia Lorca was one of those slain. But when the Franco era mercifully ended in 1978 the country embraced liberalisation with a passion that left political and religious primitives reeling. In 1979 Madrid’s staged its first Gay Pride march, and in 2005, Spain became one of the first countries in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. In 2007 it was hailed as having the most advanced LGBT rights on the planet. In the same year, EuroPride was held in Madrid, and welcomed more than 2.5 million people over the course of one week. This year Madrid hosted World Pride, which attracted even greater numbers to the city. I am immensely proud to have been in the vanguard of a movement that, back in the 70s, drew a line in the sand and said “enough is enough!” But, as we blow whistles, wave rainbow flags and dance in the streets, let’s pause to consider the plight of those living in places where being gay remains a criminal offence – 74 countries in total. It’s an appalling fact that 12 of them have the death penalty for homosexuality. Until they learn that LGBT rights are an integral part of human rights, these countries should be ostracised and denied the billions in foreign aid that they receive from the “decadent” West.

currency Currency questions answered by Moneycorp

The cost savings of using a specialist currency company are attractive but I have been put off as I understand there could be extra work involved. I also have concerns regarding the safety of my money - am I being over cautious? Specialist currency providers are becoming popular choices for British ex-pats living in Spain or, indeed, those returning to the UK. Opening a trading facility is much easier and quicker than you may think but is necessary to comply with European KYC anti-money laundering legislation. moneycorp offers the option for customers to apply for registration on-line, via our website, which is a short and straight forward process. Alternatively, customers can simply complete a paper registration form. Additional documentation such as proof of identity and proof of address may be required in some cases. For the small amount of effort to apply for an account, there are many potential benefits available. These include potential cost savings and the advantage of having a range of currency services that are not always offered by traditional financial institutions, such as high street banks. Trading is also straightforward and is normally conducted over the telephone. Put simply, you can have access to great rates along with ‘real time’ information on the market which can help you to trade your currency at an advantageous time. Using a specialist currency company means you can arrange to have the rate monitored on your behalf, to help you make the most of market movements and potentially avoid trading when the market is not favourable for you. Purchasing a Forward Contract, means that you can fix the prevailing rate of exchange to buy currency now, to be settled at a determined date in the future, thus avoiding any potential impact from subsequent market fluctuations. A deposit of 10% of the total amount is required for this service. The question of security is completely understandable and one that any client needs to be comfortable with. There are certain questions that will allow you to choose a currency provider with confidence and should be addressed if you have any doubts: How long have you been in business? How many staff do you have? What is your turnover? How many clients do you deal with each year? Do you have any other divisions as part of the company? Do you speculate with the funds? How do you handle client funds? Do you have audited accounts at Companies House? Where are your offices? Are you Financial Conduct Authority Regulated?

This is how moneycorp answer:

How long have you been in business? Moneycorp has been dealing in foreign exchange since 1979. How many staff do you have? Over 760 last year. What is your turnover? The last financial year saw Moneycorp trade over £25.6 billlion worth of currencies. How many clients do you deal with each year? We executed over 7 million client transactions in 2016. Do you have any other divisions as part of the company? Yes. Retail, wholesale, commercial including an awardwinning online trading platform. Do you speculate with the funds? Absolutely not! Moneycorp does not take trading positions and all foreign exchange positions are exactly matched with our panel of liquidity providers. How do you handle client funds?

All client funds are safeguarded in segregated client bank accounts. Do you have audited accounts at Companies House? Yes, we do. PricewaterhouseCoopers have been our auditors since 1987. Where are your offices? Moneycorp has its HO in central London and has other offices outside the UK. Details of locations are on our web site. Are you regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority? Yes. Moneycorp is the trading name of TTT Moneycorp Ltd. which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority for the provision of payment services. LAWYERS

Q A

What is the NIE number and do I need one if I am staying in Spain? The NIE number (Número de identificación de Extranjeros), is the abbreviation given for the Identification Number for Foreigners. The Spanish law requires foreigners to obtain an identification number for several different transactions in Spain, such as purchasing or selling a property, having a mortgage, buying a car or motorcycle, pay taxes in Spain, etc. However if you are a tourist (non-resident in Spain) and you will not be making these type of transactions, then there is no need for you to obtain one. Please note this is only general information for your perusal. The NIE number procedure in Spain has changed very often in the past years and might do in the future. We highly recommend you to discuss it with your lawyer for an up-to-date and accurate advice.

If you have any further questions about this or any other legal matter, please do not hesitate to contact us; we have a team of experts standing by to assist you in any way we can. Call 965 480 737 or email info@pellicerheredia.com Videos at www.pellicerheredia.com

10 who-knew uses for aluminum foil We already know that aluminium foil is a kitchen musthave, but its metallic, pliable structure makes it super-useful all over the house. Here's why you should stock up:

Line cabinets and drawers Not only is the foil easy to clean with a damp sponge, but it will help reflect light in a cabinet's dark corners.

Protect pie crust Worried about burning your famous apple pie? Cover the edges with a ring cut out of aluminum foil to keep the crust from getting too brown.

Make a funnel

Polish silverware

With this nifty trick, a chemical reaction causes tarnish to transfer from your silver flatware to the aluminium foil. Line a plastic bin with the foil (shiny side up), and place the silver pieces inside. Pour in a 1/4 cup washing soda, and a gallon of boiling water. Stir and let soak for 10 to 15 minutes.

Clean the grill

In a pinch, create a makeshift funnel (which you can even bend to fit in tight spaces) out of a piece of foil fashioned into a cone.

A ball of foil makes quick work of de-gunking a grill of any burnton barbecue leftovers.

Move heavy furniture Wrap the feet of your sofa in a few layers of heavy duty foil to help scoot it across carpet (but avoid using this trick on delicate surfaces or furniture that the foil could scratch).

Iron clothes faster Aluminum foil reflects heat, so try placing a sheet under your ironing board cover, to smooth wrinkles a bit quicker.

Soften hard sugar When a recipe calls for a tablespoon of brown sugar but you'd need a chisel to carve it out, a little heat can help. Wrap the sugar in a piece of aluminum foil and toss it in a 350-degree oven for five minutes.

Scrub dishes Like wire wool, a ball of aluminum foil can help clean cookware you can give a good scrub, like glass casserole dishes or castiron skillets.

Scare away birds

Chances are you love seeing brightly coloured feathered friends around your garden, but if you have a fruit tree, you might not want birds feasting on your bounty. Like the reflective tape sold at garden centres, strips of aluminum foil hung in your tree can help keep them away.

Tandem sky jump for charity

1,2,3 JUMP: Erica sky dives for local charity Erica, orginally from England, now living in Spain has always had an ambition to do a sky dive. Finally after some encouragement from a friend she registered and paid for the jump herself. As she was doing the jump anyway, she decided to make it worthwhile and raise some money for the Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity at the same time. So, at a small airfield in Castellon, Erica and her sky dive partner jumped out of a small plane, from 4,000 metres (approx 13,000 feet) and free falling for the first 60 seconds

before the parachute opened. She was watched by her husband Alan and youngest grandson Aden who wisely remained safely on the ground. Through the generosity of friends from the Petanca Group, Urbanisations Buena Vista 9 and 10 Rojales, the Bridge Bar in Rojales, Nev, Mick and friends at the monthly Charity Quiz held at the Rialto Restaurant, Benimar, family and friends in England, the amount of sponsorship raised for the charity totalled â‚Ź1,250. Erica would like to thank all of the people who

so generously sponsored her. The money raised was presented to the charity on Monday, where two volunteers, who work for them, Meeche and Valerie, accepted the cheque on behalf of the Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity at the Petanca pitch in Ciudad Quesada. Without encouragement from Meeche who herself had previously done a solo sky dive, Erica thinks she might not have realised her ambition. The Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity was created to assist terminally ill patients free

of charge and in their own home environment, administering care with dignity and compassion. The dedicated nurses are experienced in palliative care and work alongside doctors to effectively manage pain and symptoms. They also provide emotional support to the patient and family. The charity is a non-profit making organisation that relies on donations and its charity shops, and anyone needing their nursing services or wishing to support the charity can contact them on 966 790 363.

Last Weeks Solutions on page 36

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 3 represents B and 11 represents L, so fill in B every time the figure 3 appears and L every time the figure 11 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

Code Breaker

Horoscopes and Puzzles

Kenny’s Mystical Postbag Kenny, what does it really mean if you dream of a death? I am dreaming that I am at the graveside but I do not know who is being buried and I wake still asking why I am there?! Paula J.K.(sms) No worries Paula! To dream of a death is to dream of a birth in the family. You will not be present at the birth however, that is why you cannot see who died in your dream! Welcome a new family member, and worry not, this dream also tells me that all will go very well. Stop worrying!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week Stop waiting for things to happen and be a part of what's going on right now. Missed opportunities are down to an inability to hold back on fear; and fuelled by your coming to terms with just what it is that you really want from the Cosmos right now!

Mars trines with Uranus this weekend, bringing some intrigue into your most recent decisions. For some reason you are in fighting mood as you open doors and go to places that you have never been, with a view of making some long overdue changes to your life. Do not be angry with what comes your way, but do see what you have been missing!

The Mercury ingress steps up levels of communication and deservedly promotes you and what you are doing right now. This is a good time to be centre stage as workwise you find yourself stepping into somebody else’s shoes and doing the very best that you can too. Relationships may have been strained lately, now you can find a way of making amends!

Although you are opposite to Gemini you both have more in common than other opposing signs do. This is due to you both being mutable signs bringing compatability. Adapting to changes brought about this week is the name of the game, and you could make this very easy or play on making it difficult for all those who are truly concerned.

Opposites attract this week. As both Uranus and Mercury make a beeline to Mars, your opposing sign of Scorpio is reflecting your negative energies and sending you back to where you should be right now. Do not worry if this brings on an unsettling feeling; you have to experience things and start to see them the way that others seem to be seeing.

The entry of Mars sets the cat amongst the pigeons but also sorts the men from the boys too! An affair of the heart has brought you some sleepless nights, but fear as such cannot live in a healthy body. Taking a step forward is the thing to do, as the portents across the Cosmos back you and all that you do right now. In the end though, you choose!

Taking risks and getting a lucky chance are very much fuel for your fire this week, as a green light sees you making a very swift decision based on the issues concerned. Though you can see things from both angles, this is a time to unite, and what is needed is a strong defence, brought about by care and consideration, for all domestic matters of care.

Mercury sends out a very strong message on your behalf that you are not to be messed with. A delicate situation has been avoided by your innermost good intention and application. Having saved the day, now Mercury is in conjunction with Mars to ensure you a very smooth way through for a well deserved month of blissful fun to come!

As Venus directs towards Pluto and all seems to be lost, remember that your idealistic ways are brought about by calm and peace. In your opposing sign there is activity not matched by the sheer power of your passivity; and your contribution of silent power is much needed now to get a good result. Have your way, because you know you have won.

There is no turning back the clock, and what has gone has gone, and cannot be brought back. Silence now on your behalf will be seen as very negative behaviour, so have your say and be dammed. Send out that strong message that you strongly disapprove of recent events, but that you are the very best shoulder to cry on when the time comes. It will!

You have started and so too must you finish. It is time to put much behind you, but that will not stop you from having the very last say on the matter. Just as somebody leaves your friendship this week, so somebody steps up, as an acquaintance pulls out all the stops and shows their utmost support and loyalty to you. Ceres squares on Kora to boot!

A wonderful week in which many a niggling problem is shared, halved or disappears from the agenda. You are so right to stick up for yourself, but you have a uniquely psychic way of dealing with problems in a spiritual, hands on way. Ready for confrontation and fuelled by emotion, someone will get their comeuppance very soon!

A double whammy links your planetary leader, Neptune with the Sun in opposition, and a brief midweek encounter with Venus. This ammunition supports a recently applied for permit and will be the start of the changes that you make that will help you financially in the months ahead. Play the waiting game, but expect the good results you need.

Calling all singers! Do you like to sing, either alone in the shower or with friends? Are you in a choir and looking for something a little different to enjoy as a group? Maybe you’ve never sung in a group before and it’s something you’ve always fancied doing? In just one weekend this coming October - Friday 6th to Sunday 8th - the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) offer a unique opportunity to singers everywhere to learn a cappella four-part harmony. Even if you’re an old hand at singing, there will definitely be something new to learn from the fabulous champion quartet, PZAZZ, who are being flown in from the UK especially to work and play with us. Over the course of this special weekend, you’ll be learning two acapella songs and enjoy singing in a men’s, ladies’ and a mixed chorus. The venue for this weekend in October is the Hotel Costa Narejos in the resort of Los Alcázares, and those taking part are more than welcome to bring other family members with them. SABS is very keen to spread

the joy of learning acapella (singing without a backing track) throughout Spain. “We had a wonderful time at our last event which is open to everyone who likes to sing” said SABS President, Lyn Baines, “It’s a great weekend, with a chance to make new friends as you sing together. Yes it’s quite hard work but such fun too. On the closing afternoon, everyone will get a chance to perform to an invited audience of family and friends.”

Places are limited and are being snapped up fast, so please make sure you register today to avoid disappointment. Full details of the SABS Harmony College and this special weekend can be found at www.sabs.es/cm2/ music-search/harmonycollege-2017 or e-mail: registrations@sabs.es

Fighting those age-related conditions A healthy diet and lifestyle are our best weapons against age-related diseases, and for staying healthy and active throughout life. Diet has a profound impact on two of the leading causes of age-related illnesses and conditions: inflammation and being overweight. Maintaining a healthy heart and blood vessels are two of the most important things anyone can do, along with keeping one’s weight under control. Eating a healthy diet does not need to be a chore. It is all a question of smart choices. Picking the right foods not only makes a difference in health risks, but also positively affects performance throughout the day at work and at home. While the answer is not in a single food, or even a handful, adding nutrient-rich foods like some of these listed below is part of a winning game plan. Pistachios Pistachios are a multitasking nut that has proteins and healthy fats, as well as three types of antioxidants. Those antioxidants help to decrease blood pressure and allow for good muscle recovery. Large population studies show that

people who regularly eat nuts, such as pistachios, have a substantial lower risk of dying from heart disease or suffering a heart attack. Pistachios may protect from heart disease in part by improving blood cholesterol levels. Cherry juice Cherry juice is often taken by athletes after their workouts as its targeted antioxidants help with muscle recovery, improving recovery time. In addition, it boosts sleep quality to help prevent anxiety and stress later on in the day. Greek yoghurt Plain Greek yogurt is a nutrient-packed snack that has many health benefits. High in protein, it can boost energy and muscle mass, which decreases as we age. It can also benefit digestive health if it contains probiotics. Beetroot The deep red root vegetable increases the size of blood vessels, thereby improving the flow of oxygen that can get to

Encouraging advances in skin cancer drugs IT WAS only ten years ago that a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma – an advanced form of skin cancer - was synonymous with death in a short space of time. Recently, in one of the many cancer congresses held in Spain, specialists had the opportunity to meet a boy who was diagnosed with the disease five years ago, which oncologists call a long-term cancer survivor. This case, unthinkable a decade ago, is possible thanks to immunotherapy. This treatment is revolutionising the way the disease is handled and many specialists believe this milestone is greater than when chemotherapy was discovered in the 1940s. Unlike conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, immunotherapy is not directed at destroying tumour cells, but instead is to

stimulate the patient’s immune system so that it kills the offending cells. In February this year, the first immunotherapy treatments were tried on five patients in Madrid that have solid tumours with a poor prognosis and from whom a further biopsy can be taken for analysis. The Oncology department at the Alicante General Hospital is also currently taking part in the scheme, through various clinical trials, that seeks to develop new immunotherapy treatments and drugs.

muscles and tissues. For anyone with high blood pressure or suffering from cardiovascular disease, this is a good food to include. Milk A good hydration beverage that has protein, vitamin D and calcium like we often hear, milk also contains electrolytes for good muscle contraction.

PUT THE KETTLE ON: Coffee drinkers may also have less inflammation and boosted immune systems

Instant relief

A wasp or hornet sting is an uncomfortable and often painful experience that is common during the warmer months when the blighters are most active and people spend more time outdoors. If a stinger is left embedded in the body, remove it as soon as possible. This should be the first step. Then, head to your kitchen cupboard and pull out a bottle of… vinegar. Yes, vinegar - wasp and hornet venom are powerful alkalines. Using an acid such as vinegar will neutralise them. It can be applied via a piece of cloth or bandaging. Make sure to keep the stings soaked for at least 15 minutes. Some vinegar will absorb through the skin and it should greatly help eliminate the discomfort.

ACCORDING to a Spanish study drinking four cups of coffee a day will make you live longer. 20,000 middle-aged people took part in the major study. It was found that those who drank coffee regularly had mortality rates almost two-thirds lower than non-drinkers. This isn't the first study that proves the benefits of drinking coffee. Previous studies found that coffee improves liver functionality. Drinkers may also have less inflammation

and boosted immune systems. People who drank two cups a day saw as much as a 22% drop in mortality. Some older people in the study saw that rise to 30%. People who drank four cups a day had a 64% lower death risk than those who drank no coffee at all. This study could not definitively prove that drinking larger amounts of coffee is the cause of this, but it did shadow research done in the United States which suggested that three cups a day

could prolong life. Scientists believe that coffee has the ingredients that can protect the body. Compounds such as caffeine, antioxidants and diterpenes have been proven to have a positive effect on the body in that aspect. The study was carried out in Spain over the course of 10 years. 19,986 people were included in the study with 1 in 60 of those dying in that decade. Those who drank coffee regularly had the lowest death rates.

Make shaving your face a pleasure again IT’S not always in deference to their favourite rock acts or staying up with the latest fashion for beards that some men grow their facial hair. Many prefer to look like ZZ Top rather than suffer the consequences of the discomfort or pain of shaving. Shaving is a good form of exfoliating, and getting rid of dead skin cells, but overdoing it can bring redness, cause razor bumps, and expose tender skin. To prevent this, try some of

the following shaving routines. Steamy showers Warm water softens both your hair and skin, reducing tension as your razor blade cuts your stubble. Lather up Massage shaving cream into your face and neck in a circular motion and let it sit for 1 to 2 minutes. If you want to get fancy, try a badger shave brush to help lift the hairs, soften them, and spread shaving cream evenly. Replace your razor If you feel any tugging while

shaving, ditch your razor and swap it for a new one, A lot of men use old blades that cause tiny tears in the skin that can be uncomfortable, For a standard shaver, use it about 5 to 7 times before throwing it away. Rinse and repeat Wash the razor under warm water every one to two strokes to clear away stubble and cream blocking the blade, which can cause nicks in your skin. Don’t tap the razor to shake off the cream as it can damage the blade. When you finally get your face as smooth as it was before you hit puberty, apply a moisturizer to help your skin heal.

Chocolate bar reaches its peak BUDGET retail chain Poundland is set to argue in the UK courts that Toblerone reduced the value of its trade mark when it redesigned its famous chocolate bar last year. Poundland announced in June that it was releasing its own similarly mountaininspired chocolate bar called Twin Peaks, but halted the product’s release following the receipt of a legal letter from Mondelez International, the makers of Toblerone. At the time, the British chain did not deny the influence of Mondelez’ famous product – whose shape is protected by a registered UK 3D trade mark – but rather positioned it as a response to a redesign that had not been well received by the store’s customers. The dispute between Poundland and Mondelez has now escalated to the High Court of Justice. In Poundland’s defence,

the company argues that Toblerone’s trade mark has been “irretrievably abandoned” by its redesign, which damaged the bar’s reputation. The new-look Toblerone, which hit UK shelves in November last year, saw the gaps between the bar’s signature peaks widened. It was dubbed “wrong” and “austerity Toblerone” by tetchy social media users. In its claim, Mondelez is arguing that Poundland has infringed its trade mark both through the shape of the bar and its packaging, which sees

a gold, prism-shaped wrapper stamped with a mountain logo. It says that Twin Peaks is “deceptively and confusingly similar” to Toblerone, while Poundland argues “no member of the relevant public would mistake one for the other”. Unlike Toblerone, whose pyramidal shape is said to be inspired by the Alps’ iconic Matterhorn, Poundland’s chocolate bar has a double peak that the company claims is borrowed from Wrekin Hill in Shropshire.

Less alcohol doesn’t mean less quality THE LOWER the alcohol percentage of the wine that you drink, the less you’ll feel the consequences the following day. Low alcohol wines can be a wise choice, but are there any real benefits? Most afternoon barbecues roll on into the evening, so it’s worth putting some thought into the ABV (‘Alcohol by Volume’) of the wine you’ll be drinking. After a few glasses on a hot summer’s day, the small difference between 12 and 14 per cent can have a big impact how you’re going to feel the next morning. More or less, the alcohol level of wine is linked to the amount of sugar which the grapes contain when they’re harvested. The higher the sugar, the higher the potential for alcohol, which is why warm climates like Argentina and Australia, are often associated with high-alcohol red wines (13.5 to 16 percent).

A counter-trend toward low-ABV wines is bubbling away, though, driven by people wanting to rein back on the units they consume for health or weight reasons (the higher the alcohol, the higher the calories). One in four people now cite ABV as an influence in the wine they choose and, as a result, companies are producing low-ABV spin-off ranges, such as First Cape’s ‘Cafe’ Collection (5.5 per cent) or Jacob’s Creek’s ‘Cool Harvest’ (9.5 to 11 per cent). Northern, high altitude, and cooler regions tend to be the source of low-ABV wines, and where global trends have seen many percentages of alcohol creep up, certain sparkling wines produced in Northern Italy – such as Moscato d’Asti – has stayed around the 6 per cent mark without any loss of quality.

that’s quietly optimistic in mood rather than full-on euphoric,” Goddard said. “I started thinking of times I’ve been driving home late from DJing gigs all over the U.K. Listening to music in the car when there are no interruptions and you can really crank the system up – that’s when I’ve had some of my best musical experiences ever. “I wanted to make the track quite free and give that sense of collective energy that can make an audience lose its mind when you get it right.” Belfi’s research revealed that the right choice of music on the morning commute could boost driver mood for up to two hours. Further tracks designed to put a lasting smile on our faces as we make the journey to and from work will follow from

German electro-dance duo Mat.Joe and soulful British artist NAO. Each track will be accompanied by a video produced by VICE, showing the evolution of each tune. “We were excited to share the results of this scientific insight with the artists to give them

the opportunity to create something special,” said Marcel Breker, engineer, Ford of Europe. “The immersive B&O PLAY system in the all-new Fiesta gives drivers the perfect space to listen to these exciting new adventures in sound.” TOP OF THE POPS: Disco on the move.

EVER DELAYED starting a car journey until you have chosen just the right music for your trip? Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard has the answer. His new track “Momentum” incorporates the latest scientific thinking into the music choices that can boost mood on our daily drives. According to a study commissioned by Ford with Spotify and New York University (NYU), music with a driving beat is best. Surprisingly, sad tunes that have a melancholy feel work just as well as happier tracks. For his track, Goddard consulted Amy Belfi, a cognitive neuroscientist from NYU, who conducted the new research into the science of sound and emotion while on the move; the resulting track is an atmospheric homage to his love of great driving soundtracks. “I was inspired to create a gentle disco piece

THE MOTOR Ombudsman is urging motorists to do their homework when it comes to narrowing down their ideal car and retailer ahead of the introduction of the new ’67-registration on 01 September.

Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, said: “In-depth research is critical when it comes to buying a new car as it’s a significant purchase. It’s therefore essential that the vehicle itself ticks all the boxes, and it’s just as vital that consumers have the confidence that the retailer will provide them with the highest level of service and quality during the purchase process and beyond.

Torrevieja lose to the Stars

Alicante Stars - 180 all out Torrevieja - 116 all out The latest league match in ECCL Division II saw the Alicante Stars taking on Torrevieja and it was the Stars who went away with a 64 run victory. Torrevieja won the toss and invited Alicante Stars to bat first, and the decision immediately paid off when they were 0 for 2 inside the opening overs. The choice to field first seemed further justified when the visitors were then struggling at 44 for 4. This was the point that Nadeem (59) and Ismael (49) came together had put together a fifth wicket partnership of 112 that turned the innings back into the Stars’ favour. Both fell in quick succession, with Ismael unluckily being dismissed one short of his half-century, but there were little other contributions as Torrevieja reduced the Stars from 156 for 4 to 180 all out.

On an unpredictable Torrevieja wicket, the best of the bowlers was Angus McDowall who finished with 4 for 30. In reply, Torrevieja failed to get close to the Stars score despite a solid opening batsman’s performance from Kieran Wood who scored 39. Nobody was either able to keep him company or make any worthwhile contribution of their own and the home side was bundled out for 116 and a defeat by 64 runs. Wickets were shared around with Abdul taking 3 for 8 and Shani, in his only over, taking two wickets and mopping up the tail-enders. Torrevieja are again at home this weekend as they take on Pinatar Pirates, and spectators are always welcome. For further information check out the website at torrevieja. cricketclubwebsite.com

BEST OF THE BOWLERS: Angus McDowall

It’s just not cricket A LOCAL cricket team in Wales have been accused of tactics that are simply ‘not cricket’. Carew CC were leading their league as they took on their own title challengers, Cresselly CC, in the final game of the season. Carew were 21 points ahead but there are a total of 30 points available for a win, made up of 20 for the victory and a possible maximum five batting and five bowling bonus points.

So, after winning the toss and electing to bat Carew declared their innings closed with their score on 18 for 1 to deny Cresselly the chance to get any bonus points. Although Carew’s tactics were within the rules, such a decision is rare. Cresselly went on to win the game, score 20 points, and end up a solitary point behind the champions. The Pembroke County Cricket Club Di-

vision One side said: “We feel hard done by not being able to play a proper game. At the toss, our captain elected to field as we felt it was the best way of winning the game with such a tight margin. “Thinking that Carew would want to beat us the right way and show everyone they are indeed the very best, their choice to declare and deliberately lose was at odds with their title of champions of the county.”

San Miguel Strollers Walking Football

FOLLOWING A request received from the council in San Miguel del Salinas, the Strollers Walking Footballers are unable to play their matches on a Wednesday any more. So, beginning Tuesday September 5 they will be walking their stuff in the San Miguel Stadium on Tuesday nights instead, beginning at 7pm. The San Miguel Strollers

are a very social football team and play their matches at a slightly slower pace especially for the over 55s. New members are always welcome, so if you’ve ever played the game and feel like continuing in a different and more relaxing way, contact Bill Whitehouse on smstrollers@gmail.com

A popular Spanish Villa Spanish Photo credit: Wikimedia

FORMER VALENCIA footballer David Villa has been recalled to the Spanish national team for the next series of international fixtures. At the age of 35, many players would be planning their retirement from the game but the popular Villa has been selected by manager Julen Lopetegui to be part of the Spain squad that is taking on Italy and Liechtenstein in the World Cup qualifiers that begin tomorrow (Saturday). His last international appearance was three years ago during the disappointing World Cup match in Brazil when the then holders were embarrassingly beaten by footballing minnows Australia. “They didn’t call me up three years ago...but I always dream of wearing the national team shirt again,” Villa admitted. This latest selection could allow Villa to reach the coveted 100 caps for his country – he’s currently on 97 – and held the record for the most goals scored for Spain, with 59. He’s got some way to go the beat Iker Casillas who is the most capped player in the history of the national team, with a record of 167 matches.

footballers in rental ‘fraud’ TWO YOUNG Spanish footballers have left a club in Northern Ireland after complaining about the state of their accommodation. Álex Gil and Toni Jiménez – both from Cordoba – were taken on by the Portuguese manager of Sofía Farmer FC and part of the deal was for them to be found somewhere to live. What they were provided with was a house that initially had no electricity with broken beds and dirty mattresses, and for that pleasure they were charged the princely sum of €550 a month in rent. However, it wasn’t long before they found out that the club was allegedly renting the flat for only €363 and keeping the balance. This was only discovered after the Spanish

players accidentally found a copy of the contract when they were cleaning. “It was clearly a fraud, and all that after having been dumped and left to our fate in a strange town from the moment we arrived,” complained Álex Gil. “But thanks to the hospitality of other Spaniards in the area, we didn’t have to sleep on the street. “We spent 12 days trying to find the money to eat, and in the end we realised we’d been ‘had’ and went home to Spain.” Sofía Farmer FC has so far not commented on the Córdoba players’ claims.

What the drivers think...

THE 2017 Formula 1 circus moves from Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium to Monza in Italy. Here’s what some of the leading drivers are saying ahead of Sunday’s race... Max Verstappen – Red Bull Racing “It’s maybe not the most positive track for us in terms of top speed but it’s always good to feel the atmosphere of the fans who are very passionate there.”

Fernando Alonso – McLarenHonda

“Like Spa, Monza is one of those legendary tracks where everybody loves watching cars going racing. With the new wider, faster cars this year, it will definitely be another circuit where we’ll see a new fastest lap and some incredibly high speeds on the straights.”

Carlos Sainz – Toro Rosso “The Italian GP weekend is a bit of a frustrating one, because you want to spend the whole weekend eating pizza and pasta but you can’t as we’re there to race! A part from this, I have to say it’s an amazing weekend and one of the things I enjoy the most is the Italian fans.” Kevin Magnussen – HaasFerrari “Monza is probably the best track for overtaking on the calendar. It’s always exciting racing there. It’s is all about the atmosphere. It’s got so much history and the Italian fans are really into it and they’re extremely passionate.” Romain Grosjean – HaasFerrari “Monza may be one of the circuits where we don’t improve the lap time that much compared to the past. It’s going to be fun though, with big straight lines and a lot of low downforce.”
