A DAY OF DISCOVERY: The wreck was discovered at the end of July
by Tahnee Wright A 16-year-old French girl found the wreck of a pirate ship which sunk in Denia waters some two centuries ago as she snorkelled off les Marines. Orianne Marrel was on holiday with her family in Denia when she and her brother Virgil decided to spend the day snorkelling off a boat in the les Marines bay. Once the boat was moored - some 350 metres from the shore - Orianne and her brother jumped in to
the water. It wasn’t long before Orianne discovered what she described as a “huge wooden skeleton”. Beneath the sand of the seabed were the ribs of what looked like the hull of a ship. Orianne and her brother were amazed and excitedly took photos and videos. Their father was equally amazed and immediately informed the Municipal Archaeologist Josep Gisbert. The family were returning to France the next day so Orianne’s fa-
ther sent Gisbert 32 photos and eight videos by email. Investigations took place and the wreck was presented to Denia’s Councillor of Culture Rafa Carrio this week. Gisbert explained that although the wreck was discovered at the end of July, it was not presented sooner to prevent high summer season tourists diving off it in search of ancient treasure. Presenting the wreck, Gisbert confirmed the sunken ship was the ‘Zefarain’ of ‘Zephir’, a French pirate
ship registered in 1810 in the port of Cherbourg. The ship and its crew ended their days in Denia waters in The Peninsular War in 1813 after being cannonballed by an English frigate. The shipwreck will now be documented some 204 years later and will include Orianne’s name as its discoverer in its official title. Orianne’s father told Gisbert: “We are very proud that the name of our family appears amongst the archaeological history of Denia."

Solidarity as new school year is upon us by Rose Holmes AS the start of the new school year approaches, shoppers at Carrefour in Finestrat were asked to donate school materials for needy families. 50 volunteers participated in ‘Return to school’ solidarity campaign which the supermarket launches every September. They were on hand to collect the donations that ranged from pencils to schoolbags and will later be distributed by the Red Cross. Last year, the Fundacion Solidaridad Carrefour presented the Red Cross with school materials worth €562,154 that had been collected at stores across the
country. These were later distributed amongst 18,000 children living in vulnerable conditions. Finestrat Mayor Juan Francisco Perez - together with the Finestrat store’s Manager Javier Bausset urged Finestrat residents and visiting shoppers to take part in the campaign: “This will ensure that many children will be able to start the new school year on an equal footing with their companions,” he said.

HOW?: The baby could not have absorbed cocaine through his mother’s milk
by Tahnee Wright A MONTH-OLD baby is in intensive care with brain damage after cocaine was found in his system. The boy’s parents, a woman of 22 and her 36-year-old partner – who are both Spanish from Alaquas, west of Valencia – were taken into custody after taking him to a hospital in Valencia where doctors immediately noticed inconsistencies in their account as to what had happened.
The parents claimed to have noticed rapid deterioration in the baby’s health after they had put ointment on sores in his mouth – hinting that he had suffered an allergic reaction. Their explanation did not convince the pediatrician attending the boy, as he displayed classic symptoms of drug intoxication. An emergency blood test confirmed the presence of cocaine, which was corroborated by National Police investigators attached to the Minors Unit.
As the baby was bottle-fed he could not have absorbed cocaine through his mother’s milk and the police are attempting to establish how it entered his system. The boy remains in intensive care and doctors have revealed that he shows signs of life-changing, permanent brain injuries. He is currently in the temporary care of the regional government in a private clinic, but will moved to a state-run hospital when his health permits.
Offer of employment 16 young people under the age of 30 have started work in Calpe’s Ayuntamiento as part of the Avalem Joves Plus programme, co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Servef Youth Initiative. The initial 12-month contracts will offer the new employees the opportunity to gain practical experience as well as demonstrate the importance of young talent for the improvement and modernisation of the public administration. Of the 16 young people, multiple engineers have been hired along with architects, a biologist, a sociologist and a social worker.

Deadly disease spreads as far as the Marina Alta Photo credit Alcalali Turismo
by Rose Holmes The Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed two new cases of Xylella fastidiosa in the province of Alicante. The disease has been found to have infected almond and olive trees in El Comtat and the Marina Alta. The cases were reported to the European Commission who later said in a statement that Spain is “losing the battle” against the disease that is “officially out of control” Xylella Fastidiosa is one of the most dangerous plant bacteria worldwide, causing a variety of diseases, with huge economic impact for agriculture. It was previously confined to Guadalest, where emergency action has been taken, but it has now spread to 26 almond orchards in Balls in El Comtat and Alcalali in the Marina Alta. The current protocol, in line with European Union regulations, dictates that a plant found to be infected by Xylella fastidiosa should be eradicated, along with all plants within 100 metres of it, even if they are not infected: ‘Strict eradication measures apply, consisting in a clear cut of all host plants of the specific subspecies of Xylella fastidiosa, irrespective of their health status, in a radius of 100 m around the infected plants.’ The European Union recognises these reg-

themselves are destroyed. Regional Councillor of Environment Elena Cebrian met with the mayors of the affected villages in order to try and calm local farmers and put compensation plans in place. She did however confirm that biologists have not as yet identified which insect species is carrying the disease to new areas.
A JUDGE has refused provisional bail for the woman who killed three cyclists and severely injured another two as she ploughed her Ford Mondeo head-first into them on the N-332 whilst under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The 28-year-old Spanish woman from Gandia has been held in custody since the accident in May and is awaiting trial. She is charged with triple reckless homicide and two crimes of causing injury by serious recklessness. Her lawyer addressed a letter to the judge in early June requesting that the woman be released on provisional bail until the trial. He claimed she did not pose a flightrisk and said she would appear at court on a weekly-basis to sign a register. The judge refuted the lawyers claims and refused provisional bail, saying the woman poses a threat to public safety. At the time of the accident, not only was the woman under the influence of alcohol and drugs but she was also banned from driving. She was arrested at the scene and sent straight into custody – just two days later she claimed to ‘remember nothing’.

by Tahnee Wright A BENIDORM-BOUND RyanAir passenger has been banned from flying with the airline for life after causing a drunken brawl onboard. The flight from Newcastle airport resulted in flight attendants calling the local police as the plane landed into Alicante-Elche airport. The woman was caught on video fighting with others on the plane. The video shows the woman hitting other passengers over the top of the seats. heard trying to calm her down. The flight attendant is then forced to step in, managing to restrain her. Lucy Norris, who filmed the altercation, told the English press: “It was just as we were about to land when the woman started kicking off. "She was shouting, screaming and making a show of herself. “She had been rude to a few people on the flight and I think she was mortal drunk. "The police were waiting there as we got off." The woman in question broke her silence this week, telling the English press: “I’m on a lot of medication. I’m on antidepressants, diazepam for my back and sleeping tablets which I’m prescribed. “I had been awake since 5am. I had

A Ryanair spokesperson told the English press: “The crew of this flight from Newcastle to Alicante requested police assistance upon arrival after a passenger became disruptive inflight. “The aircraft landed normally and the passenger was met by police. “We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour at any time and the safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority. “This passenger has been banned from flying with Ryanair and this is now a matter for local police.”

It wasn’t until an administrative worker noticed that something was wrong and the company investigated. They soon realised the extent of the farmer’s lies and called the police, who arrested him on the spot.

Rescue operation success
FIREFIGHTERS rescued a Dutch hiker as she walked along the senda del Tango which leads to the top of cabo de Sant Antoni in Javea. The 56-year-old woman was walking with a friend when she lost her footing on the bumpy path and fell down a ravine. A helicopter was dispatched as the terrain made it too complicated to carry the hiker to safety by stretcher. The helicopter took the woman to the fire station in Denia where she was met by an ambulance and taken to Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud. She is thought to have broken her ankle.

Residents left disappointed after meeting with mayor by Tahnee Wright THE Costa Nova Owners and Residents Group met again this week to further discuss the issues and implications of the Costa Nova Park & Ride Pilot, its rapid deployment and the current consequential effect to the Costa Nova Community. The Group were delighted to be joined by Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi, Councillor Kiko Mata and Steve Cooper of Euratex, the company that carried out a fire risk assessment on behalf of residents – no assessments came from the council. The resident’s opposition to the car park at Costa Nova includes issues relating to the lack of consultation, health and safety (fire risks, sanitation and traffic management problems) the destruction of a public green zone and insufficient investigation into alternative solutions to the closure of the car park park at la Granadella. The car park has allowed over 130 cars to park whist the occupants use 2 free shuttle buses transporting them some 4 kilometresto la Granadella. The meeting commenced with a review of activity to date, followed by Steve Cooper giving a summary of the European Standard Fire Risk Assessment that Euratex carried out. Steve explained the highly hazardous nature of what had been done and the necessity to bring the car parking area up to approved European standards. A petition with 652 signatures was presented to the Mayor to highlight the serious and strong opposition to the car park.

WAITING PATIENTLY: Residents hope that a resolution can still be achieved An open forum of questions and answers followed and the Mayor and the Councillor revealed that they did not believe it necessary to consult residents on the creation of the car park as the law allowed the Council to use 40 per cent of any green zone in Javea for the purpose of parking. However, they conceded that going forward, Costa Nova residents will be engaged and invited to future meetings. The Mayor and the Councillor said that two alternative sites had been considered but the Costa Nova site

Andreas (centre) at the Vuelta checkpoint in Benitachell
NEARLY four months later, Andres Contreras - one of the two surviving cyclists of the accident that occurred on the N-332 in May – has been sent home from rehab. 26-year-old Contreras announced his return home on Facebook but confirmed “all is not over” as he will continue to work with physiotherapist Jero Benavent. Contreras’ father - Luis Alberto Contreras (53-years old) - was killed in the accident along with his friends Eduardo Monfort Gasent (28-years-old), and Jose Antonio Albi (28-years-old). He said it has not put him off cycling – only two weeks ago he was backstage at the La Vuelta checkpoint in Benitachell and said that once back in the saddle, there is “no limit” to what he hopes to achieve in the sport. His friend Scott Gordon, the second survivor remains in rehab at Hospital Vithas Nisa Aguas Vivas in Valencia.
was chosen as the lower cost option and they also believed fewer residents would be impacted. They said that the police visit the car park evert 20 minutes, a claim which was strongly refuted by residents living close by. The Mayor said that the Council is no longer encouraging tourism to Javea in an attempt to control numbers, but residents said he failed to see that the park and ride pilot was advertising la Granadella and making it more accessible, resulting in dangerouslyhigh numbers to the
small cove. The Mayor and the Councillor offered to see people individually, expressing an open-door policy. After the meeting, attendees fed back to say they did not feel their questions were answered satisfactorily. Many were shocked by the answers given, the lack of consideration towards safety and wellbeing and the Council’s blatant denial of facts. Residents were left feeling that their concerns are not of high priority for the Council although it is hoped that a resolution can still be achieved.
Missing tortoise A WORRIED pet-owner has offered a reward for the safe return of her tortoise who disappeared from its home in Sol Park, Moraira during the recent storms. Lauren Turner said she and her friends and family have searched high and low for the tortoise, who goes by the name of Speedy, but they are beginning to lose hope. She said: "We love him and there is a reward for his return. "He could be miles away!"
‘Missing’ posters have been put in vet’s surgeries and the police have been informed. The reptiles generally travel slowly but can sometimes manage human walking speeds. The fastest recorded tortoise speed is 5 mph (8.0 km/h), according to the Guinness World Records official site. It was achieved by Bertie at Adventure Valley, Brasside, UK on July 9, 2014 and he's even appeared on Britain’s Got Talent.

Saying NO to Javea’s Bous a la Mar Photo credit: Wikimedia
by Tahnee Wright AROUND 30 protesters gathered on Javea’s Avenida de Jaime I last Sunday for a demonstration to raise awareness against the Bous a la Mar. The demonstration, organised by ASOCIACON E.R.A. called on Javea to end its widely condemned Bous a la Mar event and with it, the abuse and suffering of bulls. Protestors raised flags and speeches were given in Spanish, Valenciano, Dutch, English, French and Portguese as the group urged Javea to become a leading town in the fight against animal cruelty, suggesting it follows in the footsteps of Torrevieja with its childfriendly, cruelty-free bull run. The demonstration came just days after a young man was gored and left with brain injuries by one of the bulls in the Javea bullring. The bull caught

Javea’s Vietnamese pigs returned to the Saladar last month and have now bred in force and made their way down to the Muntanyar urbanisation. Residents thought the problem was solved earlier this year when a British mother and daughter adopted the pigs in Pou de la Font in Benitachell to prevent them from being slaughtered. But the pigs escaped from the fenced lot a short time later and after running riot in Benitachell, are now back
in Javea with a vengeance. Residents are fearful that the pigs will cause accidents and believe they have now crossed with wild boars and birthed the cerdoli hybrids, a species that inherits the worst of their parents: they are aggressive like wild boars and reproduce with the ease of Vietnamese pigs. Tourists have been feeding the pigs, which has made the problem worse and residents are still waiting for the problem to be addressed by the council.
Dumpers at it again ALCOY’S city hall’s Environment department discovered a hidden rubbish dump on the way up to Serelles. The woodland area in the Sierra Mariola national park, known for its trees and shrubs, was recently cleared, said Councillor of Environment Jordi Martinez. “Here at city hall we work to maintain the municipality and the countryside that surrounds it in the best possible condition. We know that most people respect this and are offended by cases like this,” he added. Martinez’s department is now investigating who is responsible for dumping what looked like builder’s rubble in ruins on the ascent to Serelles. Meanwhile, the rubbish will be removed and the area cleared once again.

Less stings this summer
Juan Guillen, a researcher from the Institute explained that the month between July 15 and August 15 is the worst period for stings when there are more people in the sea and more likelihood of contact. This overlaps with the period between June and July when the mauve stingers or pelagia noctiluca which cause the worst stings are usually most abundant. This year they failed to turn up in their usual numbers owing to an absence of the east Levante winds that bring them into shore, Guillen said.

Whilst there have been just as many jellyfish around as usual, fewer have reached the coast this high summer season and fewer bathers have been stung. This announcement by the Institute of Coastal Ecology was confirmed by the Valencian Community Red Cross who treated 4,541 people for jellyfish stings this year compared with 12,711 in 2016. Alicante swimmers were the most unfortunate as 2,783 of those needing medical attention were from this province, with 1,623 from Valencia and 135 from Castellon.

by Fabio Delucci Ryanair is scrapping its two-bag carry-on policy, saying passengers are bringing on board too much luggage to make it sustainable. The low-cost airline said it made the decision because flights are being delayed because of a lack of space in overhead cabins.: "As too many customers are availing of Ryanair's improved 2 free carry-on bags service and with high load factors (97 per cent in August) there is not enough overhead cabin space for this volume of carry-on bags, which is causing boarding/flight delays." From November 1 only "Priority Boarding" customers who have paid extra will be allowed two carry-on bags.
Second season for local olive farmers
Regular customers will "only be allowed to bring one smaller carry-on bag on board the aircraft, while their second (bigger) wheelie bag must be placed in the hold (free of charge) at the boarding gate." Ryanair said in July it was considering changing its baggage policy, with Ryanair's chief financial officer Neil Sorahan saying at the time: "I've seen two-year-olds wheeling a bag up to the plane as people try to take advantage." Ryanair also announced it is increasing its check-in bag allowance from 15kg to 20kg, and reducing the standard fee from £35 to £25 for a 20kg bag. The airline's chief marketing officer, Kenny Jacobs, said: "These bag policy changes will cost Ryanair over 50 million euros (£46 mil-

by Tahnee Wright The Terra Natura Benidorm family does not stop growing. The park recently added to two new birds to its aviary – the Amazonian motmot and the Swainson toucan. Both birds have come from a zoo in Basel, Switzerland and will live in the aviary with the park’s 300 birds of more than 80 different species – 13 of which are endangered. This is the first Amazonian motmot at Terra Natura Benidorm. The Amazonian motmot is a colourful bird found in the tropical regions from southern Mexico to northeastern Argentina. It is also known as the ‘pendulum bird’ because of its long racketshaped tail that it cocks back and forth like a clock pendulum. Its central crown is black and surrounded by a blue band. There is a black eyemask and its nape is a chesnut colour.
The Amazonian motmot lets out a low owl-like ooo-doot sound and eats small prey such as insects and lizards and will also regularly take fruit. The Amazonion motmot at Terra Natura Benidorm is a male and around five-years-old – he measures 40 centimetres and weighs around 100 grams. The Swainson toucan is native to Central America, ranging from southern Honduras south to northern Colombia, where it is fairly common in the wild. One of the largest toucans in the world, it is not listed as endangered but its populations are dwindling due to the destruction and industrialisation of its habitat. The Swainson toucan is brightly marked and has a large bill. It is mainly black with maroon hints to the head, upper back and lower breast. The face and upper breast are bright yellow, with narrow white and broader red lines forming a lower border. The upper tail

by Rose Holmes Eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil have been discovered in 40 countries, including 24 of the European Union’s 28 member states. Millions of eggs have been pulled from European supermarket shelves, though some regulators have voiced concern that many contaminated eggs have already entered the food chain, mainly through processed products such as biscuits, cakes and salads. A spokeswoman for the European Commission is reported to have confirmed that the only EU member states so far unaffected are Lithuania, Portugal, Cyprus and Croatia.
She is also reported to have confirmed that the non-EU states in which contaminated eggs have been discovered include the United States, Russia, South Africa and Turkey. Dutch and Belgian authorities traced the source of the insecticide to a supplier of cleaning products in the Netherlands. Two Dutch men who ran the cleaning company Chickfriend were arrested last month. While a large number of contaminated eggs would need to be eaten to affect health, fipronil is considered moderately toxic and can cause organ damage in humans. It is widely used to treat pets for ticks and fleas but its use in the food chain - for example, to clean out barns - is forbidden.
Did the U.S. warn Spain of imminent Barcelona attack? U.S. security agencies warned Spain that Daesh was planning an attack in Barcelona, according to the Spanish press. The U.S. National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) is reported to have alerted Spanish intelligence officers to the threat weeks and even months before a van ploughed into pedestrians on August 17, killing 14 people and injuring over 100. In addition to the 14 killed by the van, two others were killed during the driver’s getaway and in a separate car and knife attack in the Catalan coastal resort of Cambrils. "Unsubstantiated information of unknown veracity from late May 2017 indicated that Daesh was planning to conduct unspecified terrorist attacks during the summer against crowded tourist sites in Barcelona, Spain, specifically Las Ramblas boulevard," according to an NCTC briefing note published by the Spanish press. Daesh claimed responsibility for the attacks without naming those behind the assault. A spokesman for Spain's CNI intelligence agency, refused when contacted by the Spanish press, to "confirm or deny anything on communication with other intelligence services". But a Madrid-based radio station quoted "anti-terror sources" suggesting that the note published was authentic.

Fall in road deaths this summer
Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido confirmed on Tuesday that this year’s high summer season ended with 224 deaths on Spanish roads; a fall of 31 (or 12 per cent) from the same period in 2016. Zoido said this meant that 2017 marked the summer with the lowest number of people dying in road accidents in Spain since 1960, when 150 people were killed, taking into consideration there were fewer people on the
roads at that time. The year 1989 was the worst summer for traffic accident deaths, with 732 people losing their lives. Since then, the mortality rate has fallen relatively steadily, although the summers of 2015 and 2016 witnessed rises of 2.7 percent and 12 per cent in the respective number of deaths. Eighty percent of fatal accidents take place on Spain's secondary roads with
people losing control of their vehicle and driving off the road. Meanwhile, almost 30 per cent of victims were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. This summer saw an extra 3,000 Guardia Civil offers enforcing traffic controls across Spain, with a special campaign to increase awareness about the need to allow at least a metre and a half of space when overtaking cyclists.
Spanish Google swamped with anti-Semitic content Input the word "Jew" into the Spanish version of Google and almost one in three of the results will prove to be antiSemitic. The figures were revealed as part of a report by Observatorio Web, an Argentinian-based watchdog monitoring abuse and hatred online. A third of Google searches with the word "Jewish", or "Judio" as it is in Spanish, led to anti-Semitic content, according to the research for the year 2016. In addition, the study revealed a growing trend for anti-Semitic videos
on YouTube, with more and more people ‘liking’ the hate-filled footage. In January, the clips received three likes for every one dislike but that increased to four to one by the end of the year. Released last Friday, the report highlighted 484 Spanish-language videos that deny the Holocaust and have been viewed almost 1.7 million times in 2016 alone. Meanwhile on Twitter anti-Jewish content is largely related to Israel and the trivialisation of the Holocaust.
Drug gang bust SPANISH police arrested 14 people - including 12 Brits, a Spaniard and a Dominican - in Magaluf for alleged drug dealing. Officers seized 3kg of high-purity cocaine and other drugs, including ecstasy, cannabis and metham-
phetamine, over €100,000 in cash and four vehicles, Spanish police confirmed in a statement, adding they were assisted by the UK’s National Crime Agency. Operation Tantum was launched following another drug raid last
year that ended with the detention of four people. Spanish police said the men arrested were part of an organisation that sold drugs in the island’s many nightspots and clubs. Raids were also carried out in Barcelona.

Brit expat annoys neighbours with ‘Little Britain’ shrine by Fabio Delucci AN English tree surgeon has reacted to Brexit by transforming his German home into a quirky homage to Britain, complete with red telephone boxes and a life-size model of Queen Elizabeth. 53-year-old Gary Blackburn moved to Germany 32 years ago and entertains a number of curious visitors at his ‘Little Britain’ exhibition in Kretzhaus, 30km south of Bonn. Blackburn began assembling the exhibition following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union in June last year and even features a lime green mini car from the ‘Mr Bean’ television series. However, not everyone is happy with Blackburn’s collection, with some of his neighbours complaining to their local government about the latest exhibit parked on his lawn - a demilitarised Centurion tank he bought from the Swiss army. “For me the tank is a sign of peace. I have decorated it with a lot of poppies and white doves. The poppies stand for freedom and peace in England and commemorate fallen and injured soldiers during the past two world wars,” he told Reuters. “Two neighbours want it removed, but the Interior Ministry recognise that the tank is demilitarised, stands on private property and is not visible from the streets.”
Despacito… on a calculator!
JUST when the world thought there couldn’t possibly be any more versions of the massively popular Spanish hit Despacito, we have been proved wrong. Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber’s collaborative song has been spun into some fresh, noteworthy remixes and covers over the past couple of months. But aversion by Japanese man known on Twitter as @zk_ojis now vying for the top spot as he turns one of the least likeliest items into a musical instrument: a calculator. Using two Dragon Night AR7778 calculators, he generates monophonic sounds to the tune of Despacito. A tweet sharing a video of this ‘calculator version’ has wowed thousands on social media with over 30,000 likes. While some thought it to “be better than the official version”, there were others who weren’t impressed, saying it sounds like an “ice cream truck from hell”. Dance track ‘Despacito’ - which translates as ‘slowly’ - has reached number one in 45 different countries, including the UK, since its release in January and was the first Spanish-language song to do so since ‘Macarena’ in 1996.
Mathieu blasts Spanish press
You’re my dad, Julio!
A Spanish man who claims to have the results of a DNA test showing he is Julio Iglesias's son filed a paternity suit on Monday against the Grammy award-winning singer. Javier Sanchez Santos, 41, presented the lawsuit at a court in Valencia where he lives. Santos' mother, Portuguese ballerina Maria Edite, presented a paternity suit against Iglesias in 1992 but it was eventually dismissed due to procedural reasons. She says she had a brief affair with the Spanish singing legend in 1975, who at the time was
married to socialite Isabel Preysler. Now Santos wants to reopen the case based on a DNA test carried out on tissues and cigarette butts touched by Iglesias. The items were reportedly collected by a private detective in Miami, where Iglesias now lives. The DNA test allegedly shows there is a 99 per cent probability of paternity. If the Valencian court rejects the lawsuit Santos said he plans to appeal to higher courts in Spain and even up to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Iglesias, 73, is one of the biggest stars of Latin music, having sold over 300 million albums. He has three children with Preysler -- including pop star Enrique -- and five children with his current partner Miranda Rijnsburger.
99 PER CENT CERTAIN: Santos will appeal to higher courts if the Valencia court rejects the lawsuit
Former Valencia and Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu has blasted the Spanish press due to the ‘pressure and demands’ they bring. Having joined Sporting CP in Portugal this summer, the Frenchman believed the pressure did not help his smoking habit and hit out at the Spanish press for reporting on it. “It is not the same pressure that I endured in Spain over the years I played there,” Mathieu told a Spanish sports magazine. “There are demands here of course but not the same as there were at Barcelona. “The pressure and demand is brought about by the Spanish press - they put a lot of pressure on you when you have a bad performance “They hunt you down every day and put you down; it is not easy at times like those. “I was criticised for being a smoker, but I’m neither the first nor the last player to smoke. “All that is important for me is how people feel when they see me player, nothing else matters.”
Spain most popular for British pensioners ALMOST a quarter of a million British pensioners have chosen to make mainland Europe their home, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Tuesday. Spain was the outright winner for British over-65s, accounting for over 121,000 older ex-pats who have left the shores of Britain. It is double the number registered 10 years earlier. As one recent report explained: "Pensioners are one of Britain's great exports. Of the 296,600 British citizens who resided in Spain in 2016, around 40 percent were 65 or over." At the same time, only 85,000 elderly citizens of mainland European countries have made Britain their home, said ONS. France, the closest mainland European country to Britain, is the number two choice, with around 70,000 British pensioners living there. The number of Spanish and French pensioners living in Britain is around 7,500 in each case. Italy is the only wealthy European country where the number of their pensioners living in Britain (around 20,000) exceeds the estimated 5,000 British pensioners living in Italy.

All our fake news yesterdays by
Michael Walsh
keyboardcosmetics@ gmail.com
During the late 1980s millions caught up on world events by switching on BBC or ITV News. The term news is a misnomer as newsfeed was then dominated by events in apartheid South Africa. BBC anchor-man, Michael Buerk, covered so many stories in the region I assumed he had residential status. There was never doubt that mainstream TV was singing to the same
hymn sheet as was the Sovietbacked African National Council (ANC). I recall one shocking incident in which an African teenager, suspected of being an informer by a witch-finding mob, suffered a petrol-filled tyre being placed over his head before being publicly incinerated. I felt then and now that the pitiless vigilantes were heartened by the presence of the BBC´s TV crew which filmed the unfolding horror. During the 1960s I stayed in Cape Town and Durban. Once, lost and late at night, I wandered the shanty towns but I never felt threatened. There was an anti-British bias but this came not from Africans but from young White descendants of Dutch settlers. The term apartheid has negative connotations but it is simply the Boer word for ´separateness´. Today, separate development is commonplace the world over. There is never media interest in the Indian caste system or apartheid practiced elsewhere. Ironically,
much separateness is wisely self-imposed. The West´s current experiment in social engineering forces quite dissimilar ethnic groups together with chaos the consequence. Television crews were often banished from South Africa for setting up fake news stories. A common trick used by television teams was to toss loose coins into public trash bins. African kids, typical of all children, would scramble into the bins to recover the coins. This activity was filmed and the footage later captioned or narrated: ‘In Apartheid South Africa the Whites live well whilst African children feed from rubbish bins.’ Pictures of armoured vehicles were superimposed on the backdrops to peaceful public parks. A South African correspondent
writes, “My late brother, who lived in England, said BBC and ITV claim black children are held in concentration camps. But, the pictures shown were of the children from Khayalitsha. The kids were standing at the town´s airport fence watching airliners coming and going. Today, in African ruled South Africa, there are an estimated 450 white squatter camps scattered across the world´s most lawless nation. These luckless ethnicEuropean communities make up about
25% of South Africa´s white population. Are we surprised that there isn´t a British hack to be found at any of these squatter camps.

Golden age movers

If you ask members of the Baby Boomer generation, what in their opinion was the greatest dance from their younger years, you would undoubtedly receive an assortment of answers, such was the number of dance crazes that came out of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Right up there I imagine would be the jive, one dance style that still retains its popularity. But there was a lot of competition back then, with weird stuff like: The Mashed Potato; Locomotion; Stroll, and Hitch Hike, to name just a few. But I recently watched a video on Facebook, posted by one of my ex-
Bermuda cronies of a party in the 1970’s, and I was reminded of something that helped make those times so memorable - the greatest dance ever devised by man - not the Watusi or Hully Gully, but the Bump! Now whoever invented this dance, it’s pretty obvious to me that it must have been someone with a sadistic bent, a retired tax inspector perhaps, and which you might think contradicts my opinion of it being the greatest. But there is something deeply satisfying about being able to knock eight bells out of each other on the dance floor without seriously falling out.
And in spite of being one who is to dancing what Kim Jong Un is to standup comedy, I wasn’t half bad at it. And I have the scars to prove it. Freud would have made something out of that. Like a lot of men of my generation, it takes a few gallons of wine to loosen up my head sufficiently to take to the dance floor. And see, that’s what I like about alcohol, it’s a rejuvenating potion, because no sooner am I up there, than I am at it like a mantis at speed. Any doubts about my dancing ability are washed away in a tide of Rioja,
and I suddenly know without a doubt, that I am pretty damn cool. Trouble is whilst ‘getting on down’ is ok, ‘getting on up’ presents a problem, nevertheless judging by the gyrating and the chucking out of legs at odd angles going on around me, the Twist seems still to be the most popular dance with other Golden Agers. But these days there is a worrying sound above the music, reminiscent of a gate with rusty hinges. It’s the sound of hip and knee replacements under stress. Dancing has become a dangerous game.

The Costa del Sol Adventures Costa del Sol was sitting on a terrace in Lagos with nothing but the flat morning ocean and a beer for company when his phone buzzed. “Heh-low. Who´s this?” “Heard anything strange this morning?” Costa recognised the voice of his friend Dan Sanchéz of the National Police. They´d walked the same path together once - both were half-Spanish, half-English - but the road had forked and each had gone their own way. “Not a birdy. What´s happened?” “A Cessna carrying Frank Levy the Hollywood producer back from Cannes was over Malaga.” Dan listed a few of Levy´s films, well-known low-brow hits. “A crew member robbed him mid-air and jumped from the plane. Diamond ring.” “Happy landing?” Costa could hear the hooting Malaga traffic behind Dan. “As far as we know.” “Where was this?” “Near Comares. In the mountains behind Velez.” Costa watched a dolphin break the slate-grey surface. “So?” came his friend´s voice. “Sure. I´ll give it a go.” “Get me on this number. Levy´s offering a reward too, so that´s a double incentive this time.” Costa stood and stretched, dropping a coin onto the table for the beer. He saw an old Scot with a tatty, grey beard standing near his boat. Costa knew that years back the man had been at this beach with his wife, now long dead, and had lost his wedding ring while swimming. He came every morning, walking the disappearing waves, looking in vain for the ring. Costa pushed his boat out and gunned the engine. Waving at the old man - they hardly ever spoke - he skimmed off across the glassy surface planning how he was going to spend his reward.

The way I see it… by

How was your August? For the remainders hot and sticky I guess? The summer inferno is too much for me so as always, I escaped back to London, and you can almost guarantee cool weather, with more than a splattering of rain, after all it is August with the children on holiday, with many parents or grandparents trying to keep them warm and dry at an English seaside resort, then just as you thought it was over, Bank Holiday weekend turned out to be one of the hottest on records, weather madness. My August was terrible, I ended up a nervous wreck, it was like standing in a bath having a shower at the Bates Motel aka the Hitchcock film Pshyco, as I spent nearly the whole month, either on the telephone or emailing companies that had been able to mess everything up with a regularity that must be unprecedented in my life. First unfortunately for me a foreign lorry from Romania turned into the near side of my car damaging the nearside rear door and back nearside wing of my car, the lorry had been parked on double yellow lines in front of temporary lights at some roadworks. All the cars in front of me signalled and overtook the stationary lorry, when the lights turned green in our favour, I did the same and as I got level with the front of the lorry he decided to pull away without any signal from the kerb, hitting my car. I jumped out and took a couple of pictures quickly, and then realised that the lorry was a left-hand drive, I walked round to his open window, and told him what he had done, and that I wanted to exchange insurance details with him, he replied in broken English that he could not park there any longer as he was blocking the traffic. We agreed to meet after the traffic lights, stop and then exchange details, the lorry was as wide as the road, so I told him to move up into a bus lane so we could continue with the paperwork. I moved up to the bus lane and waited for him to arrive, he drove past with his window still open and shouted, “I’m not stopping”. Luckily, I had a picture of his front, showing his registration number as he drove off I managed to take the number of the rear plate, and low and behold it was different to the front plate. As my car was not seriously damaged, I drove home just half a mile away and called the police, I then had to go to their website and fill in all the details, attached the photographs that I
had taken, then the next thing I did was call my insurance company. After 10 minutes or so I got through only after pressing a series of numbers, if you want so and so press one, then press three and then press two after another ten minutes I finally got a human being, whose English was only slightly better than the Romanian lorry driver, after nearly one hour with my nerves about to explode, the insurance agent asked me to email them all the details and the pictures to their website. I then received several calls and emails asking me to repeat all the details that I had provided before. The next day was hour on hour speaking to the gas board, once again waiting a long time to get through, pressing yet again, one, then two, then four on my keypad of my telephone, I finally was able to speak to a human being, my reason to speak to them was that we have decided on having a new gas boiler. After ages and ages, I finally got an appointment to have a representative come to my home to do a survey and give me a quote. The next day I received a call from the gas board to tell me when the gas man cometh, I told them that I have already got an appointment, the next thing I got was an email of the confirmation of appointment which was a different day and time that I had agreed on. The gas man did cometh on the first day and time that had been agreed on in the first place, luckily, I was in and he explained the mix up by revolving his index finger by his temple, that signifies madness. Then I got an email from Vodafone telling me that my broadband and home telephone has been cancelled because they were unable to take a payment from my direct debit at the bank. So, I telephoned them, the usual happened, press one, press two, press five, finally after waiting almost half an hour I spoke to yet another human being. “What’s your account number?” I gave it to them, after twenty minutes or so the person told me that there was no such account, about to burst into tears I explained that I had signed a contract and gave them my bank details so they could set up a direct debit. “No sir we do not have anything on the details you have given”. But, but I spluttered with my fist clenched in anger I had given everything that was needed and I’ve been using my broadband and home phone
for more than two months. “OK” the voice said, “we can set up all the details now while we speak”, this I did, but for the next few days I got more emails from Vodafone confirming first that my contract had been cancelled. Then I called them back and they apologised for the mistakes assuring me that the new contract was now in operation. So that was my August, I had nightmares all month long of the Bates Motel with a dark shadow through the shower curtains wielding a knife and me screaming like Janet Leigh being stabbed repeatedly. With my nerves shot to pieces, I’m packing my bag to return to a large brandy and a coffee and to sanity I hope. P.S The f o r -
eign lorry has not been traced by either the police or my Insurance company at this moment of writing. M y new gas boile r will be installed within the next few days. And my home broadband and phone are working, but Vo d a f o n e have not taken any p ay m e n t so far.

Adjectival agreement Basic Spanish for everyday needs by
Jane Cronin
Last week we talked about the gender of nouns and how the articles (“a” and “the”) and adjectives (describing words) change their endings to match the gender of the nouns. Now we’ve got those basic principles established we can start looking a bit more closely at adjectives and how they change. This is really very simple. Last lesson we looked at the word for “small”, that is pequeño and we saw how it changes in four ways – pequeño, pequeña, pequeños, pequeñas, equivalent to masculine and feminine singular, masculine and feminine plural. The root form which you will find in a dictionary is the masculine singular pequeño. All adjectives that end in “o” in their masculine singular form change in exactly the same way. There are thousand of them. Here are a few that we can use to describe people: alto “tall”, bajo “short”, gordo “fat”, delgado “thin”, tímido “shy”, simpático “nice”, guapo “handsome”, feo “ugly”, viejo “old”. In each case they will have the four changes I have mentioned, so for example:
El hombre guapo - the handsome man Los hombres guapos - the handsome men La mujer guapa – the pretty woman Las mujeres guapas – the pretty women.
of these cases, the basic adjective ends in the letter “o”. However, adjectives can end in almost any letter – so what do we do with all the others? (I hear you ask). Well, let’s look at a few random examples:
Notice that in the case of the word guapo we have a different translation in English for male and female: male - handsome (or as my daughters would say - cute), and female - pretty. For most of the other words however the translations would be the same – “nice man” “nice woman” etc. Exactly the same principle works for adjectives that describe things (remember, things are the same as people in Spanish, with either masculine or feminine gender). So, for example, we could have the word “long” which is largo used to describe an object.
azul - blue grande – big joven – young feliz – happy
Un palo largo - a long stick Una cortina larga – a long curtain Now as I have said, in each
Adjectives such as those above that do not end in “o” can only change from singular to plural: they cannot make any change to differentiate them between masculine and feminine. Therefore we have: El libro azul - the blue book La mesa azul – the blue table El zapato grande – the big shoe La camisa grande – the big shirt El hombre joven – the young man La mujer joven
– the young woman El niño feliz - the happy boy La niña feliz – the happy girl However, in the plural, these adjectives add “s” or “es” in exactly the same way as nouns do. Here are the same phrases again in the plural. Los libros azules - the blue books Las mesas azules – the blue tables Los zapatos grandes – the big shoes Las camisas grandes – the big shirts Los hombres jóvenes – the young men Las mujeres jóvenes – the young women Los niños felices - the happy boys Las niñas felices – the happy girls We can notice two different things here. Firstly look at the adjectives in both sets of phrases and you will see that in each case there are only
two possible forms - singular and plural. Secondly, if you compare the two languages in all of these examples, you will see that every single word changes in Spanish (article, noun, adjective), whereas in English we only change one word - the noun – which changes into a plural word. In real life, when we are speaking Spanish in real situations, it is very difficult to get these right, but in the words of Corporal Jones, “Whatever you do – don’t panic!” The Spanish are used to foreigners getting these endings mixed up. For our Anglo-Saxon brains it’s just too much to remember changing all those fiddly endings all the time. Our learning goes in stages, understanding first before we can speak correctly, so your only task at this stage is simply to pay attention to these differences – understand what is going on and notice it as you listen to the Spanish around you, on the radio and television, on “Youtube”, or anywhere else you get the chance to hear it.
Live the moment With wry wit and boundless heart, Eva Woods delivers an unforgettable tale of celebrating triumphs great and small, seizing the day, and always remembering to live in the moment. “It’s simple, really. You’re just meant to do one thing every day that makes you happy. Could be little things; could be big. In fact, we’re doing one right now…” Annie Hebden is stuck in her boring job, with her irritating roommate, in a life no 35-year-old would want. But deep down, Annie is still mourning the terrible loss that tore a hole through the perfect existence she’d once taken for granted, and hiding away is safer than remembering what used to be; until she meets the eccentric Polly Leonard. Bright, bubbly, intrusive Polly is everything Annie doesn’t want in a friend. But Polly is determined to finally wake Annie up to life. Because if recent events have taught Polly anything, it’s that your time is too short to waste a single day, which is why she wants Annie to join her on a mission… One hundred days; one hundred new ways to be happy... Annie’s convinced it’s impossible, but so is saying no to Polly. And on an unforgettable journey that will
force her to open herself to new experiences - and perhaps even new love with the unlikeliest of men - Annie will slowly begin to realize that maybe, just maybe, there’s still joy to be found in the world.

Did you work in retail, manufacturing or banking in the UK? by
Tracy Storer Senior Partner, Chorus Financial
In all the years that I have been advising people on transferring pensions, I have never seen such astronomical transfer values, especially in the finance, manufacturing and retail industries. In the past, Final Salary pensions were seen as the ‘gold plated’ pension option, however, over recent years, opinions have changed dramatically. Many UK schemes have unprecedented levels of debt and transfer offers are at all-time highs. Transferring away from your final salary pension has never been so popular, with 10,000s of applications each year. It was due to a similar article over a year ago that my client contacted me. He had worked as a store supervisor in a leading supermarket chain, and had no idea what his pension options were. He was 52 years of age and wanted to start thinking about when he could retire and what his annual
pension would be. After initially meeting with him, I sent off for a transfer value, and a few weeks later I was sat back in front of him. In short, he could expect an annual pension of £10,200 at the age of 60, or, he could leave the scheme with a pot of £350,000, or approximately 35 times his annual pension. There are lots of factors that need to be considered before deciding if a transfer is right for you, however, for this client, the high transfer value, along with being able to retire 5 years early, were significant. I was happy to recommend that we move his £350,000 transfer offer into a UK based private pension, and have his pension funds managed by a well-known, FTSE 100 company. He would not only have full, flexible access to this pot from 55, but should anything happen to him, his entire pot of £350k would be left to his loved ones, something that his final salary
scheme did not offer. This isn’t an isolated case, I’ve seen pension values, especially from banks, retail and manufacturing companies, as high as 40 times the annual pension. I will re-iterate that it is not always beneficial to transfer your final salary pension, they are very valuable and offer benefits that cannot always be replaced. What I will say, is that requesting a valuation is simple, free and can be life changing. If you would like to know what your pension transfer value is email me t.storer@chorusfinancial.es or call 693 107 044. The examples given in this article are for illustrative purposes only. Transferring a pension from a final salary scheme means sacrificing effectively guaranteed benefits for nonguaranteed benefits and a full review of your circumstances must be undertaken before a recommendation to transfer can be given.

Unfair terms
by Gonzalo Blanco www.blancolawfirm.com available in all Costa Blanca and inland with offices in Denia and Xativa
Dear Mr. Blanco, My name is John Jackson. I have been negotiating with the bank and the loan secured by a mortgage had finally been granted, so we can now buy our habitual place of residence. The bank told me that I had to get a credit card to be able to reduce in one point the interest. Finally, I agreed to hire the card in exchange of the reduction of the interest. The question is that the contract stated the following clause: “The borrower is obliged to hire a credit card for the whole contract duration” Is it an unfair term?
Dear John, Thank you for your question. According to your information, “I have been negotiating with the bank” 9, the clause has been individually negotiating, and due to your agreement the bank reduced in 1 point the interest. It is important to understand that as established in article 82 of the Spanish General Law for the Protection of Consumers and Users (TRLGDCU), the unfair terms are those that have not been individually negotiating or those practice which are not expressly permitted that, contrary to the requirement of good faith, it causes a significant imbalance in the parties' rights and obligations arising under the contract to the detriment of the consumer. It is also important to note that the legal regimen of the “TRLGDCU” can only be applied where the injured contractor is a consumer or user. Therefore,
it is not possible declare an unfair term when this clause has been included in a contract concluded by a trader or professional. For example, if you were a professional and you request a loan to start your business, you may not invoke the existence of unfair terms, though such clauses or conditions are exactly the same as that the one signed by a particular. In this case, that you are not acting as a consumer/user in this legal relationship, the clauses will be valid. In this example, we are in front of general conditions for contracting, i.e. unilaterally included by the businessperson, clauses that have been redacted to be incorporated in numerous contracts and the client cannot refuse to agree, as it is not possible the individual negotiating on these clauses and neither is it possible their abolition in the contract. Within the general conditions of the contract are invalid the clauses that may be considered unfair when the contract is concluded with a consumer/user. Please note that the article 85 and followings of the Spanish general Law for the Protection of Consumers and Users (TRLGDCU), the legislator made an enumeration, merely exemplary of possible unfair terms
-we recommend its reading. *The article 89.4 TRLGDCU considers unfair the clause that imposed on the consumer/user complementary goods or services not requested. Therefore, it is understood that the clause that imposes the hiring of a health insurance with a bank in order to take out a mortgage loan is an unfair term. We hope we have been able to clarify your doubts, and please feel free to contact us for further information; we will be pleased to advise you.

LAWYERS
legal Grandparents’ rights Q A I want to spend more time with my grandchildren but my daughter-inlaw makes this increasingly difficult. Where do I stand legally?
This is a terrible situation to be in, however you will be pleased to know that there is a law in Spain that allows you the freedom to see your grandchildren. Basically in Spain you have the legal right to see your grandchildren. This right is stated in the Spanish Civil Code and it applies to grandparents, siblings, and other relatives of minors. You have the right to request visitation rights through the Spanish Courts. To do this, you will need a Spanish lawyer, a court runner, and a translator if you do not speak Spanish. Please note that the Judge always seeks what is best for a child´s interest. The family bond between grandparent and grandchild is seen as beneficial. For further information contact us today.
If you have any further questions about this or any other legal matter, please do not hesitate to contact us; we have a team of experts standing by to assist you in any way we can. Call 965 480 737 or email info@pellicerheredia.com Videos at www.pellicerheredia.com

IKEA shopping trip EXPLORING: The global space industry delivers important economic returns to Europe and the UK
“SPACE PROGRAMMES are often viewed as an expensive luxury - even for developed nations - and are criticised for swallowing resources that might be better spent on social needs such as hospitals. However, in the 21st century, space is inextricably part of our lives. Exploration has revealed the incredible diversity of the Solar System and helped us understand the fragility of Earth and the risks to our continued survival. Space has also become a platform for communications and other applications, without which we would now be unable to function.” These are the words of
the next professional speaker in the biannual series of talks arranged by the Costa Blanca Astronomical society. The society is honoured to welcome Professor Martin Barstow, who was president of the Royal Astronomical society from 2014 to 2016, following in the footsteps of some of the most illustrious contributors to Astronomy such as Dame Jocelyn Bell, Sir Fred Hoyle, Sir Bernard Lovell. Barstow is currently a professor of Astrophysics and Space science at the University of Leicester. His special interest being the subject of White
Dwarfs - the remnant of a star that has died - and space instrumentation. Professor Barstow will discuss how space exploration has been the inspiration for a thriving global space industry, which delivers important economic returns to Europe and the UK and how he looks forward to exciting future exploration missions. The talk will take place on Saturday September 23 at the Casa de Cultura in Denia, from 7.00pm – 9.00pm. Entrance is free. For more information, contact the society secretary – 671 152 686.
Summer Sale
APASA (Asociacion Protectora de Animales de San Antonio) will hold their much anticipated Summer Sale next week at their charity shop on Javea’s Avenida del Pla. Taking place all week from Monday September 11, shoppers are guaranteed a bargain with 50 per cent off all summer clothes and shoes. APASA was founded in 1999 by a group of various nationalities, Spanish, English, German and Swiss, with the aim of rescuing those animals that were evidently abandoned, ill-treated or lost. Initially there were just a dozen dogs, now there are over 250, needing full time staff. APASA rely greatly on volunteers, working
in the shelter, walking dogs and of course at the charity shop and their many fund-raising events. All proceeds raised at the Summer Sale will directly fund the goal of making the lives of the dogs better and provide essential care for them. For more information, please get in touch with Sue on 965 741 668 / 606 588 197.
SPACES are now available for a shopping trip to IKEA and the Bonaire Centre in Valencia on Wednesday October 4. The coach will leave Javea’s Arenal at 9.00am and tickets cost €13.50. There will be a free raffle on the coach, offering the chance to win health and beauty vouchers. For more information or to reserve your space, get in touch with Sam Littlewood – 649 239 498 or email samanthalittlewood@gmail.com.

Can you help the animals?
APROP (Protectora d'animals de Pego) is an entirely volunteer-run cats and dogs shelter amongst the orange groves in Pego. The shelter, set over 2,750 square metres, is home to some 43 dogs and over 40 cats, with these figures rising at an alarming rate. APROP was previously LAPS and was taken over last March by a group of multi-national volunteers committed to the welfare of impoverished and
abandoned animals. At the finca, neglected cats and dogs are taken in, provided with any veterinary care they might need and given hope for a better day. The shelter, as can be seen from the photos, is in desperate need of as much help as it can get as it prepares for the upcoming winter months. APROP was devastated by the storms that spread across the Marina
Alta earlier this year and volunteers are working day-in, day-out to erect stronger structures that can withstand the elements and keep the animals safe. Many of the dogs, as can be seen from the photos, are currently living on dirt whilst the shelter does all it can to obtain building supplies/ funds to concrete the floors. With no roof over one half of the cat shelter, the cats cram themselves
into nooks and crannies when it rains, frantically trying to avoid getting wet. APROP is appealing to residents across the Marina Alta to help in any way they can, be it donating funds, time (with the animals or laboring on site) or resources such as unwanted building supplies. If you can help, please get in touch with Sue – 606 910 308 or email suederek@live.co.uk.

Sauteed chorizo with red wine & honey A tasty quick and easy recipe for any BBQ , Buffet or Spanish Tapas INGREDIENTS 6 small ´dulce´(sweet) chorizo or picante (hot) if you prefer! 1tbsp olive oil 1 onion finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed Large splash red wine 1tbsp honey Handful chopped fresh parsley METHOD Add olive oil to pan and add onions and garlic until starting to go soft. Add your chorizo until brown all over and add the red wine and honey. Simmer and cover for a few minutes. Add a plash more wine if starting to go dry (or water). Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 5 represents P and 19 represents K, so fill in P every time the figure 5 appears and K every time the figure 19 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

Kenny’s Mystical Postbag Kenny, my family think I am crazy but I am starting to feel that there is a ghost in my house. I find myself looking over my shoulder, and shivering even on a recently hot night. My senses seem to be picking up on something, but what? I get no support from my family either. Kay P. Hi Kay. Energies are attracted to houses, especially if there are spiritual believers living there. Most houses have had a story before you lived in them, and spirits can lie dormant for years. Negative energies like poltergeists are attracted to adolescences and like to cause trouble whenever they can; whereas positive energy can be very attracted to someone who is opening to their spirituality, as I feel that you are. I would have to come to see the house before giving you a full report. No ghost belongs on this Earth and they should be moved on, which I can also help you with. Meanwhile do not worry, there seems as if there is nothing bad to deal with in your home, but I am here to support you if you need me to!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
Waiting for the right time mean that important priorities may never happen. Be more in the flow of things as this astrological year brings you a strong focus on domestic issues and the solving of problems previously running way out of control!
Strong psychic energies are abounding as the Sun trines with Pluto at the weekend. Your intuition and a heightened awareness is preparing you for something, and may be testing your faith in the interim. Look within to see that you are being guided for some reason, and be unafraid to step up to whatever it is that now inevitably comes along.
Saturn is a wise and sage teacher; and in this role is very preoccupied with lessons that the past brings and the karma this may indirectly bring up to you. It rules with an iron rod the Tenth and Eleventh houses bringing you discipline now to get a job done, and both the authority and temerity to be able to fully promote it anyway you see fit.
The Sun squares on Saturn, bringing timbre to plans you are currently making. Your patience and coordination are key leadership skills, and what is needed now is a coming together to ensure that recent events are never eve repeated; and respect is restored to all involved. However, the leopard never ever changes his spots!
Venus trines with a brooding Saturn and a conciliating Kora. The time is right to make amends anyway that you can, but you still have to stand your ground because you are not to blame for recent events. In hindsight you would never have got involved, but since you are implicated it is time to settle things down, once and for all, and walk away.
Mercury enters, and breaks a silence that you have used to shield you from aspects right now that immediately need your attention. Fear is a four letter word, but your lack of trust in yourself has blocked you somewhat and it is time to get back to where you belong. Whilst you’ll enjoy making up for lost time, someone very special comes into your life!
Much water has passed under the bridge, but there are those who would let bygones be bygones, and those who feel that they have to have their say. As Mercury enters Virgo and Saturn squares with the Sun, there comes a time to be thankful for even small mercies, and to try to better understand those who would bring conflicts to your door!
There was never a time like the present. Fortune and blessings abound as Jupiter opposes Kora, standing up for what you hold dear and giving the long awaited green light on a project that is motivated by your good intentions. Whilst there are somethings still in the balance Mercury opens up the floodgates and ensures that all is very well.
Venus dallies with Pluto midweek. Though your best intentions are foremost, Pluto is inspirational in regenerating and making fresh starts. You are not running away right now, but you should be moving on! Yes, all this makes you stronger but wiser, and that’s just what Pluto offers you; the power to succeed, even with regard to your wildest dreams!
Watch finances as a windfall is tempting you to splash out! Save money for the unexpected expenses that seem to be coming your way right now. Mercury moves onward towards Mars with a view to oppose Neptune, and splashing the cash is not an option for you right now. Be mindful that everyone should be paying their way too!
With the New Full Corn Moon approaching, it would be wise to reap the benefits that are within reach, and grab your piece of the pie! There is something to be said for starting to care for yourself; because your own specific wants, needs and desires need to be fulfilled. You will make the much needed moves you need to in good time, in your time!
A great time to be sociable with friends. You have had other priorities and have been preoccupied with things as of late, but now is a time to celebrate those bridges crossed with those people who want to be a part of your every success. Venus passes briefly by Pluto right at the start of this week, bringing you focus, and much love from all around!
Taking control is somewhat of an anathema to you, but there is nobody else to step up right now. Saving the day seems to be the most positive thing you can do, and it shows others just what you are capable of doing; as well as also surprising even yourself! You are more than you think you are, and you are about to find this out big time!

Feet and toes and nails Men’s feet are pretty lowmaintenance, but they can still benefit from some basic foot care. Rough skin, bad odour and nasty nails are big turn-offs – ask anyone. Keep your feet in great form with these best foot care tips for men. 1. Condition your feet with men’s body moisturizer. Hydrating your feet with a body lotion is critical to keeping rough, dry patches and calluses at bay. Apply immediately after showering to maximize moisture absorption and prevent dry skin. 2. Wash between your toes. A lot of guys don’t pay much attention to their feet, even in the shower. The area between your toes traps dirt easily and is a breeding ground
for bacteria; athlete’s foot may develop if you don’t regularly clean between your toes. 3. Wear shoes that fit. Rough skin on your feet is usually the result of wearing shoes that are too tight. The tightness creates friction that can contribute to calluses. Your feet need space so get shoes that fit properly and have soft padding to reduce your risk of calluses and corns. 4. Trim your nails the right way. When you trim your toenails, make sure you’re trimming them straight across and not rounded. Rounded nail-cutting can increase your risk of ingrown toenails, which is pretty painful. Also, trim your toenails at regular intervals. 5. Wear sandals or shoes in communal locations like the gym or public showers. The warm, humid floor of the locker room is swarming with bacteria, so always wear something on your feet at these types of public places.
Increasing eye children observed One of the world’s leading opticians, Specsavers, has noticed a worrying trend in increasing eye problems, particularly myopia (short-sightedness), in children and are advising parents to limit screen time, make sure that kids get plenty of time outside and that they have regular eye tests from the age of three. Saher Shrief, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Torrevieja stated; “We are now seeing more and more children coming into our store with visual problems, as they are watching more TV, and using more digital devices than they have in the past.” This is a trend which is being reported by other optical experts around the world. According to the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) excessive use of mobile devices can cause problems like myopia and amblyopia in young children. Maria Liu from UC Berkeley’s School of Optometry, has also seen a sharp increase in young children with myopia (short-sightedness). “It’s increasing at an alarming rate worldwide and a well-accepted contributing factor is the early introduction of handheld devices to kids.” Overuse of computers and handheld electronic devises can cause digital eye strain and expose children to too much harmful blue light, which might increase a child’s risk of macular degeneration later in life. In 2012, researchers from the universities of Bristol and Cardiff reported that children who spend more time outdoors playing when they are aged between eight and nine are approximately half as
likely to become short-sighted by the time they are 15. So limiting screen time and encouraging outdoor play time is a great way to protect
Read this ... it’ll keep you listening What effect can being surrounded by high levels of noise have on our ears and our general health? Not only can it be difficult to concentrate when our surroundings are loud, but the health of your ears can also be damaged. You might not realise it, but we are all constantly surrounded by background noise. Whether it’s passing traffic, being sat on the patio, the sounds of the supermarket during the weekly shop; it’s difficult to get away from the buzz. According to the World Health Organisation, there are approximately 1.1 billion younger people who are at risk of developing a hearing loss due to the use of personal audio devices. These are popular and can often be listened to at unsafe volumes. Noise-induced hearing loss describes a hearing loss that is caused by either longterm exposure to noise or being subject to excessively loud sounds. Being exposed to these noises can affect the hair cells which are inside the ear, and when they’re healthy, they help pass
sounds to the brain to be processed. When they are damaged, they no longer work as they should and it becomes difficult for sound to be passed through the ear and as a result, a loss of hearing occurs. The sound waves created as a result of the noise impacts on the hair cells, which can cause temporary or permanent damage. There are a number of symptoms associated with a loss of hearing: a. Finding it difficult to hear the TV or feeling that you need it at a higher volume than you used to. b. Struggling to hear someone when there is additional background noise. c. Struggling to find out which direction a sound is coming from without looking around. d. Feeling more fatigued than usual when you have to listen to lots of sounds in a day. Protecting your hearing is essential to avoiding hearing loss. If you suspect you have a hearing loss, whether due to exposure to noise or any other cause, it’s
best to seek help as soon as you can. In some instances, a solution as simple as cleaning the ear of wax could help the
problem. However, in other instances, it may be that you could benefit from using a hearing device, such as hearing aids.

problems in by optical group is so important to protect our children’s eyes. “Good eye sight is crucial for children, as during the first 12 years of our lives, as much as 80% of learning is accomplished through our vision, yet one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. Experts believe that many learning disabilities could be vision related as they may not be able to read the blackboard or text books. Parents need to take an active role in protecting their children’s eye health by ensuring they have regular eye tests and following experts’ advice.

We would advise parents to look out for the following symptoms that might indicate they need their eyes checking: complaining of headaches sensitivity to light straining their eyes constantly sitting too close to the TV saying their eyes are hurting” Specsavers Opticas suggest that a child should have their first eye examination at around three years old, as the earlier things are detected, the easier they are to rectify without delaying the child’s development. This September they are advising all parents to incorporate a thorough eye test into their back to school routine. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.
One in three sick notes are for mental health problems MENTAL health conditions account for close to a third of all fit notes issued in England, according to new data released by the NHS. In all, 31 per cent of fit notes written in England between December 2014 and March 2017 gave mental health as a reason, making it the most common condition for issuing the notes. A fifth of those fit notes were issued for a period of absence of more than 12 weeks. Stress and anxiety was one of the biggest causes of fit notes issued for mental health reasons. The number of fit notes known to have been written for stress and anxietyrelated conditions from included practices increased by around 14 per cent from 503,000 in 2015/16 to 573,000 in 2016/17. Musculoskeletal conditions were the second most common reason given for issuing fit notes.
Women accounted for more than half of the total number of fit notes issued in the reporting period, from a low of 53.8 per cent in August 2015 to a high of 57.8 per cent in January 2017, according to the experimental report. NHS Digital said that this was the first time that information had been collected from GPs and analysed. These practices are responsible for around two-thirds of working age patients registered with a GP in England. The fit note - or Medical Statement of Fitness to Work - was introduced in 2010 in response to the Black report on ill health among working age people, so GPs could give advice how a patient might return to work depending on workplace adjustments and support, rather than simply stating they were too sick to work. Simon Stevens, the chief execu-
tive of NHS England told the English press: "These figures explain why the NHS is now putting mental health front and centre, in what was recently independently described as 'the world's most ambitious effort to treat depression, anxiety and other common mental illnesses'."
Beauty tips Egg remedy for frizzy hair FOR many, frizzy hair is a daily battle. For others, it can be an occasional problem. Frizzy hair can look dull and be very difficult to style. The main cause of frizzy hair is lack of moisture. The cuticle layers on hair strands need moisture to make them smooth. Eggs are one of the most popular home remedies for frizzy hair. Egg yolks are rich in fats and proteins and are naturally moisturizing, while egg whites contain enzymes that kill bacteria and remove unwanted oils from the scalp: Whisk one egg and add one teaspoon of olive oil. Mix it well. Olive oil will act as an emollient and help lock moisture into your hair. Apply it on your hair and leave it on for about a half an hour. Rinse it out and wash your hair thoroughly. Make sure you use a rich nourishing shampoo and conditioner.
Castor oil hacks Nail treatment To fight pesky fungal infections in your nail beds, ragged cuticles and brittle nails, pour castor oil into a bowl with one-part Epsom salt and three-parts water. Soak for about 15 minutes. If you have the time, repeat this treatment daily. Castor oil's anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties will help strengthen your nails, so you'll be able to try the polishfree look in no time. Scarring To treat smaller scars or blemishes, use a cotton ball and dab the oil directly onto the intended spot and leave it on for as long as possible — overnight, if you can. Be careful, because like olive oil, castor can leave annoying stains. Sunburn Castor oil can help heal your sunburn immediately by rubbing the oil directly on the burn. It has the same cooling sensation as aloe and its ricinoleic acid will protect any burn-induced blisters that pop from infectioncausing bacteria and conquer inflammation!

physiological and nutritive needs are also being met. When removed from the litter too early (before weaning at about 6 weeks), young pets are immediately put at a disadvantage by not getting the exact nutrition they require at that age to support their rapidly growing frame, which only their mother can supply. Leading up to the 8 – 9 week mark, the mother’s interactions with the baby change and she begins to modify behaviour. The puppy or kitten is ‘disciplined’ into knowing what behaviour is tolerable and what is not tolerated, while also learning effective communication and appropriate inter-species behaviour – something humans will really struggle to replicate or correct.
Leaving the emotional support of the litter too early can result in timid and fearful pets that are unable to deal with everyday challenges and frustrations. The resultant challenges that one may experience when bringing a pet home too early are vast and varied. They can be as serious as a pet that bites out of fear or cannot be left alone due to separation anxiety to being nutritionally disadvantaged resulting in potential lifelong medical issues. Most concerns will require professional intervention, which new owners seldom have budgeted for and the pet-owner relationship may also be severely damaged. Without the time and know how to manage these shortcomings we may be left with another unwanted pet. None of this matches up to the pretty picture that you had when deciding to bring a new life into your home.

THE excitement of getting a new puppy or kitten doesn’t seem to waiver even as you get older. Few are immune to the cute factor and the younger the pet the more overwhelming the emotion felt. Even so new pet owners are encouraged not to be swayed into removing a baby from its mother before at least 8 or 9 weeks (12 weeks is optimal), as the resultant issues can be devastating for the animal and your relationship. Unless, of course, an emergency presents itself. The learning that occurs within these first 8 – 9 weeks, from both litter mates and mother, is immense and is shaping the animal’s temperament and personality for the rest of its life. When valuable life lessons are missed the potential for your new pet to experience, behavioural, emotional and psychological issues are increased. Weaning is an extremely important part of learning that animals must go through. It teaches the animal about the pressure of its bite, to hopefully result in a pet that is controlled, with a ‘soft mouth’ (which can often reduce damage if a pet is ever forced to bite) and teaches the pet about frustration control. Aside from the behavioural and emotional benefits of nursing,

THE CITY of Benidorm participated in EUROBIKE – the world’s leading bike fair last weekend. The council reaffirmed its commitment to sports tourism and together with Turespana had a stand at the event in Friedrichshafen, Germany to promote the city and its surroundings to not only the German, but also the Austrian, Italian and Swisscycling community. The three-day-event saw over 71,000 attendees. In over two decades, EUROBIKE has evolved from a meeting place for a handful of bike enthusiasts, into a global platform for the bike industry as a whole. Exhibitors come from around the world to market themselves, launch their latest developments and position their products. EUROBIKE is described as ‘the ideal networking opportunity for future joint ventures and exchanging ideas. It’s where opinion leaders and industry experts come together’ and representatives were delighted to report influencers have been brought on board to promote the city both to cyclists and those interested in other outdoor sports such as hiking, trail running and Nordic walking. The council will also work together with the Spanish Tourism Office in Munich to create and develop a campaign to appeal to the German sports tourism market.

New Subbuteo club Subbuteo players old and young are invited to the Palau Municipal D'Esport tomorrow (Saturday) as the Subbuteo club’s new season starts. The newly-formed club welcomes novices along with seasoned Subbuteo players of all nationalities. Subbuteo is a classic finger-flicking football-simulation action game. It is played on a large cloth playing field called a ‘pitch’, with teams of miniature football players mounted on smooth round bases. The football players are made to kick the ball by flicking their bases, which causes them to slide around on the pitch, hitting the ball. The rules simulate nearly all details of a soccer game including ball possession and passing, throw-ins, goal kicks and corner kicks. There is even a large section in the rules devoted to fouling. What makes the game different from most other table top sports games are the hundreds of team kits and accessories. While most games feature only two teams, Subbuteo has several hundred team designs, almost all representing real teams. There are also many additional accessories, such as new balls and goals, special figures for free kicks and throw-ins, stands and crowd, linesmen, ball-boys, streakers and policemen, floodlights, TV cameras and even a mini-Her Majesty the Queen to present the FA Cup. Doors will be open from 10.00am – 2.00pm and going forward, the club will meet every Saturday, hoping to arrange competitions, leagues and the like. For more information, head down to the Palau Municipal D'Esport tomorrow or get in touch with Pascual – 654 887 301 / subbuteo.marina@gmail.com.
