Jennifer Cunningham wishes Geoff and his team at the RTN good luck for the re-launch and is delighted to continue advertising weekly. Having worked with Geoff for many years, I for one missed him very much when he took a well-earned break. Now they are all back – watch this space.
SINCE the RTN was first published on 1st October 1999 Geoff Gartland and his team spent the subsequent years establishing a newspaper that represented it’s thousands of readers, providing informative news, events and stories at a local, national and international level. After almost 15 years Geoff decided to take early retirement, signing an agreement with a third party publisher allowing them to continue to use the RTN brand, unfortunately things did not go as planned. Negotiations broke down and Geoff had no alternative but to reclaim the RTN and joined forces with the EWN Media Group, who also own another publication called the Euro Weekly News. Having sold the brand to EWN Media Group Geoff was asked to stay with the RTN and use his expertise and that of his team to bring the paper back to its former glory. Geoff said: “this is a really exciting time, particularly as we have now joined the EWN Media Group who are a very strong company. They have the expertise, the infrastructure and are dynamic in their approach to sales. This can only be a positive move for the RTN, our readers and our advertisers.” Today’s RTN hits the streets with a bumper 56 page edition, the original design style and an extensive distribution in both North & South Costa Blanca. The paper will continue to support local charities and events, but also cover national and up-to-date news articles from around the world Geoff said: “I couldn’t be happier to be back at the helm, with the original team by my side and backed by the EWN Media Group the future is secured for the RTN.” If you have any suggestions or comments Geoff is happy for you to share them with him, simply email geoff@ewnmediagroup.com
Rested and revitalized after a short spell away from the paper, it¹s great to see Geoff re-join his team and be back at the reigns of the great RTN, that we all know and love. Good luck Geoff and welcome back. Heidi Winstanley Managing Director Round Town Travel
All of us DragonStack were very pleased to hear about Geoff’s return to RTN and we want to wish him and his team all the best. We look forward to working with you for many years to come
Congratulations Geoff on your return to RTN. It’s fantastic to see you and your team back where you belong. I’d like to wish you much success for the future and I’m sure that you have already settled back into you new (old) role! Sammy Kruz Co-organiser BENIDORM PRIDE

Mothers win legal birth certificate battle by Caroline Tyszka THE story of two mothers’ battle to register the birth of their son has finally concluded with a birth certificate being issued. Just a few weeks ago the same sex parents presented a petition, with one hundred thousand signatures, personally to the Directorate General of Registries and Notaries, under the Ministry of Justice in Madrid. The petition demanded that
the two women who married in 2007 be legally allowed to register the birth of Lennon, their third son, in Denia. The Denia Civil Registry had refused to register the birth of the baby because the parents were both women and would not provide certain ‘intrusive documentation.’ The Directorate General of Registries and Notaries, Francisco Javier Gómez, has now approved the parents’ application and officially registered the birth of Lennon, stating that they were not required to prove how he was conceived or reveal if a reproductive clinic had been used. The family with an official certificate
Brenda Kelleher and Maria Jose Torres, who married in 2007 and have two other children, triggered the bureaucratic nightmare with the birth of their son at the Denia Marina Salud hospital in 2016. The couple, who live in Benidoleig, other children were registered without problems in their old residence in Atzaneta del Maestrat. At that time they were asked only to provide the same documents as any other
couple to register their child. Speaking in Madrid Maria Jose had said: “There is an incongruity here: on the one hand, Lennon is not legally my son and, on the other, the administration is seeing us as a family, as all neighbours, friends and all the people who are supporting us see us.” The decision, which has established a precedent, will make it easier for other families in a similar situation to that of Brenda and Maria.

THE Sabadell bank has brought the Villaitana hotel for €24.3 million. The luxury hotel, situated next to the Terra Mitica theme park, was owned by the Ghandi entrepreneurs Cremades family but has had creditors amounting to around €117 million since 2010. Banco Sabadell’s asset management company HI Partners have purchased 80% of the hotel resort with the family retaining 20%. The company have also accepted part of the debt. The Villaitana complex was inaugurated in 2006 with an investment of €150 million. €50 million came from the Cremades family, €35 million from Santander, €30 million from Sabadell, €20 million from Banco Portugues de Inversiones and €6 million from the Valencian Institute of Finance. Hi Partners have already taken over the management of the hotel resort and intend to purchase the remaining 20% from the family.

Dogs destroyed following man’s death
British pensioner kills wife GUARDIA Civil have launched a murder investigation following the death of an 86 year old British woman. The expat, who had allegedly been beaten by her 86 year old husband before he killed her, then attempted to take his own life. The incident happened at the weekend in the Orpea Residential Home of El Campello. Officers attending the scene accompanied the husband to the hospital where he was treated for superficial wounds before being taken into custody. The El Campello town hall stated that the Local Violence Unit for Gender Violence had no record of any previous incidents involving the couple. The council held a minute silence on Monday at midday at the town hall to show their solidarity with the victim and all women victims of such crimes.

by Caroline Tyszka GUARDIA Civil officers are investigating the death of a man in the Marina Alta area having been attacked by a pack of dogs. The 66 year old man from Beniarbeig had been out walking to his small orchard at the weekend when the attack occurred. Having not returned several hours later his son went to look for him and discovered the gruesome body of his father. The man fought hard for his life, but having being bitten on his legs and hitting the ground the pack of dogs continued their frenzied attack,
fatally injuring him. Officers reacted quickly once at the scene and reviewed similar incidents in the area. They visited a nearby property where there were several dogs, and previous attacks had been reported. Although all the animals were inside and had no blood stains on them it was noted that one of the dogs was wet, as if having been washed. When questioned, the owner said that it had fallen into the pool. Five of the dogs were of mixed breed – pitbulls and bullterriers – and only

one had an identification chip with no paperwork for insurance or ownership being offered for any of the animals. DNA samples were taken from the five dogs who were being held at SEPRONA centres. The autopsy confirmed that the man died from the many dog bites, causing severe blood loss. The court ordered that the dogs be destroyed after DNA evidence confirmed that they were responsible for the attack. The owner now faces charges of reckless homicide.
Madrid drug haul
GUARDIA Civil have arrested a drug trafficker in the capital city of Madrid having discovered 166 kilos of cocaine in various locations. The man, of Dominican nationality, has been charged with money laundering offenses and drug trafficking whilst his wife is still under investigation. In an operation that began at the end of 2016, when officers received information that a couple were believed to be involved in criminal activity, the pair were put under surveillance and their movements monitored. In late January when the man was using a garage for storage the officers moved in and discovered 26 packages each containing 1 kilo of cocaine along with a substantial amount of cash. The team of detectives then moved to a location in the Ensanche de Vallecas of Madrid, where they found his partner and a further 140 kilos of the drug, more cash and paperwork relating to their activities. The police seized €402,175 along with three vehicles, one used to conceal drugs, and computer equipment all of which is being held as evidence.

Consulate team visit Benidorm by Caroline Tyszka The Director for Consular Affairs in the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, Julia Longbottom visited Benidorm this week. Ms Longbottom and Sarah-Jane Morris, British Consul for Alicante, have been visiting the many residents associations, official bodies and media representatives in the region. Ms Longbottom, who is also head of the Crisis Services, detailed in general terms how the Consular services are continually evolving to meet their customers’ needs, and that Spain has the largest consular team in the world, helping 1.5 million British visitors each year and an estimated 300,000 expatriates. She said: “It is important for me to understand how our team is reaching out to the British community at all levels, from the ambassador in Madrid to the groups who have concerns. We need to make sure that their views are heard.” Sarah-Jane Morris and Julia Longbottom spent an evening in the resort with local women in business Karen-Maling Cowes and Vikki Caton along with the President of HELP, Sylvia Wiggins.

Karen said: “We are women who all strive and work hard for a better community, I feel proud to have worked alongside the British Consulate, helping improving safety within our community. I have learnt so much about achieving what seemed in the beginning to be an impossible goal. The experience of the Consulate has been of great value and I look forward to their continued meetings supporting the British residents and there concerns for a safer Benidorm for us all.” The Consular service has a four year plan which focuses on prevention rather than treating the symptoms. “No one wants to have their holiday ruined,” the Director said, “so if we can help prevent such events and give advice on how to prepare for an overseas trip and assist when things do
go wrong, that is what we are here for.” Ms Longbottom talked about the increasing availability of digital services. For example emergency travel documents can be processed on one day and are normally available the next. She said: “Our services have to be relevant and accessible to all our customers, we have to ensure that the information is available by other means even though the majority now have access to the internet, it is important to hear and understand all the questions that our customers have.” Up-to-date accurate advice can be found on the Consular Facebook page ‘Foreign and Commonwealth Office,’ and details of the Helping British People Overseas plan are available at www.gov.uk/fco.

Couple denied civil partnership A couple in the UK have been refused the right to have a civil partnership instead of getting married by a Court of Appeal. by Caroline Tyszka Steinfeld and Charles Keidan, who have a 20 month old daughter, have been together for seven years and wanted to get legal recognition for their daughter but do not wish to get married. The heterosexual couple have said that they are ‘being unfairly treated because of their sexual orientation.’ Currently civil partnerships are only for same sex couples. Three judges hearing the appeal on Tuesday accepted that this was a breach of the couple’s human rights but that the Government should be allowed more time to decide the future of civil partnerships. The narrow decision to rule against the appeal was a severe blow to the couple who say they will continue to campaign for change. Miss Steinfeld aged 35 spoke following the ruling saying: “we are deeply disappointed by the decision.” Her partner Mr Keidan, aged 40 said: “Opening civil partnerships to all is fair, popular and will be good for families and children across the country.” The couple have nothing against marriage and believe it to be a meaningful expression of love and commitment but is not right for everyone. Campaigners have expressed their anger at the court ruling saying that it is unfair that same sex couples can either have a civil partnership or get married whereas mixed sex couples do not have the same rights.

Bungling burglar hospitalised A man, believed to have been illegally accessing a property in St Vicente del Raspeig, has fallen four floors and is lucky to be alive. Emergency services received a call saying that a man had fallen from a building on Calle Pintor and was in need of assistance. At the scene officers and the SAMU treated the alleged thief before he was taken to hospital with several fractures. It is believed that his fall was broken by landing on a roof of a ground floor property. The area has been victim to a wave of robberies and assaults in the past few week with Local and Guardia police asking residents to be extra vigilant and more aware of personal and property security.
Benidorm journalist to receive a Lifetime Achievement award The London-based National Secular Society is to award a Lifetime Achievement honour to Barry Duke, editor of two online magazines, The Freethinker and The Pink Humanist, as part of this year’s Secularist of the Year celebrations on March 18, 2017. Announcing the award, Terry Sanderson, President of the National Secular Society said: “I am very pleased that the NSS is honouring Barry in this way. “He has been a consistent voice for many years in the fight for justice and secular humanist principles. From resisting apartheid in his native South Africa to fighting for gay rights in Britain and Spain. Barry, who celebrated his 70th birthday in February, has always provided a strong Barry Duke rationalist voice. “We are glad that Barry is able to join us in London and look forward to being able to recognise his many and varied contributions to the cause of secularism, humanism and his spirited opposition to religious intolerance and irrationality.” News of the award came just after Barry had accepted a commission by RTN to write a regular column about the gay scene on the Costa Blanca, and his first column appears shortly.

Benidorm at war with dog owners BENIDORM’S town hall is considering new measures that will see dog owners fined for not clearing up pee as well as poo. by Caroline Tyszka The proposals, which are yet to be added to the towns Ordinance, would require all dog owners to carry not just a bag for their pet’s poo, but also a bottle of water to wash the area where their dog has urinated. The new measures would penalise owners failing to follow the rules with a €150 fine. Alongside this new regulation is a proposal that the €150 fine currently in place for those not clearing up their pet’s poo be raised to €400, with the aim of reflecting the seriousness of the crime. Whilst these measures have not yet been approved the councils technical team are already evaluating if some form of cleaning chemical should be added to the bottle of water, or if just
water would be acceptable. They have however ruled out the use of bleach for this. José Ramón González de Zárate, councillor for the Environment said: “These measures are necessary to present a good image for tourism and to offer protection from the smell and damage that the poo and urine cause. It is easy for an owner to take a little bottle of water and a bag when they are out.” Opposition groups have expressed that they want further changes made to the Ordinance including a multiplication of twenty to the current fines for the mistreatment, abandonment or causing the death of an animal. This would see a possible fine of €18,000 being available to the authorities.
Fibre optic expansion
FINESTRAT is continuing with its plans to install fibre optics for its many residents. The town, which already has 45 kilometres of the high speed telephone and internet service, will begin installing the fibre optics in the town centre from March 2017. In June 2016 many urbanisations such as Balcon de Finestrat and Sierra Cortina benefitted from the new network with La Cala and Terra Marina soon to be operational. Juan Francisco Pérez, mayor, visited the work and said: “Fibre optics is already a reality for Balcon de Finestrat and Sierra Cortina, residential areas where there was a need to improve telephone coverage and internet for all residents in addition to the school. It has also been installed in the boulevard, which means better coverage for the companies and a further incentive for new businesses that want to come to Finestrat.” The mayor explained that because the installation was made through underground conduits of public lighting the works were less intrusive than would normally be expected, and that because of an agreement with Cloud Telecom it had not cost the council anything. In fact the company will pay the council an annual fee that will go to continue to improve the service. José María Llobregat, manager of Cloud Telecom said: “With our offices located in the town we are able to offer a quality of service, our priority is to cover the area as soon as possible so that all the residents have the best internet service.”

Lost wedding film search ends by Caroline Tyszka La Nucia couple Barbara and Dennis Jackson have had a whirlwind week, starting with an appeal for information and ending with some positive results. The couple, who retired to Spain in 2001, were childhood sweethearts from the age of seven and are about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.. Approaching the papers the Costa Blanca couple had hoped that the expat community could help locate their wedding film made 50 years ago in Wales. Married at the St Peters Church Pentre in the Rhondda Valley in South Wales on 25th March in 1967 the couple were told that a lady was going to use a cine camera to film the event but they never got to see it. A family member recognised the lady from wedding pictures as Mrs Maeve Lewis from Porthcawl in South Wales, and so behind the scenes work began to see if we could help. A major breakthrough came just hours before the paper went to print, when one of our enquiries with a reader from the same area resulted in Maeve being located, and more amazingly she remembered the couple at their special day. Dennis said: “I have spoken briefly with Maeve who told me that she has transferred some of her films onto DVD, she is now going to search her catalogue to see if she still has the footage. We are so happy to be back in contact after all these years.” Ironically Maeve herself had spent a few years living in Spain before returning to Wales with her husband, who sadly is unwell at the moment. The couple said: “It would mean the world to us if Maeve still has the film, it would make our Anniversary special.”

Costa Blanca Tourism visits Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan The Costa Blanca Tourism Board is heading East to look for a new audience. The Board of Trustees, together with TURESPAÑA and Visit Benidorm, will be attending networking activities offered by Tourism, Marketing & Intelligence at the ferias in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Deputy of Tourism for the Province, Eduardo Dolón highlighted the relevance of both emerging markets for their oil wealth, high GDP growth and the fact that the Costa Blanca Board travelled this week to Almaty, Kazakhstan and Baku, Azerbaijan, to participate in two professional workshops in which it will mainly promote the wide range of luxury tourism and congresses that the province has to offer. During its participation in the workshops, which will be attended by TURESPAÑA and Visit Benidorm, the Tourist Board will also be involved in networking activities offered by the organizing company TMI. Vice President and Deputy Minister of Tourism Eduardo Dolón explained that "Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, whose territory passes over two continents, Europe and Asia, are two oil-rich countries that also record high GDP growth and are experiencing a rapid expansion of Tourism, especially among those people who have greater purchasing power and spending capacity. These are two very important emerging markets for the province of Alicante with which, although there is still no direct air connection, we are working to make known our destination and encourage the development of operations with tour operators or airlines.
Palms get pampered
Strange but true A Teenager who was pronounced dead woke up at his own funeral. The 17 year old boy, Kumar Marewad from Manaundi in India was bitten by a dog, and following an infection was placed on a ventilator. His family were told that his condition had deteriorated rapidly and the decision was made to take him off life support. His brother-in-law said: “We had decided to take Kumar home and prepare for the funeral.” They were amazed when he began waking up and rushed him back to the hospital. He was breathing rapidly and immediately put onto a ventilator. A doctor at the hospital said that they believed he was suffering from “meningoencephalitis,” an infection caused from the dog bite.
Even the tallest tree has been treated
THE Finestrat council workers have been out in force and completed a fumigation campaign against the processionary caterpillars and the red palm weevils. The technical services department has concentrated on the Castell and Balcon de Finestrat areas for treating the palms against the caterpillars, and the many green areas have been treated against the palm weevils. The councillor for Technical Services and Works said: “Every year between January and March our teams battle against these fearsome pests, in the case of the caterpillar the timing is perfect as they have not yet fallen to the ground and therefore we can avoid as much as possible contact with pets or children at the local surrounding schools.”

The purpose was to discuss and agree finances to repair the Cap Negret beach which had suffered severe damage in January along with other important infrastructures. The mayor said: “Cap Negret was most affected by the storm, with streets being closed and the sea taking the stairs to the beach as well as the land in front of some of the buildings.” Whilst repairs have already begun on the Paseo San Pedro the meeting including a regeneration project update for the town and detailed the planned access connecting the pedestrian area of Costa Bella to beach, it was described by the Altea council as a productive and positive outcome. Llinares said: “The aim of the meeting was to seek government aid with the goal that before the summer period all the beaches of Altea are in the best condition for all our visitors.”

by Caroline Tyszka THE Government has invested €120,000 to help El Campello make repairs which occurred during the heavy storms earlier this year. In particular at a slope between Cala Lazuna and Baeza, where landslides occurred, work has already begun and will hopefully be completed before Easter when the tourist season begins. Benjamin Soler, mayor, was accompanied by a Government delegate and other dignitaries to the area to see how work was progressing. Prior to the installation of a metallic net and mesh of stain-
WORKERS have begun their annual night installation of fiesta lighting in Alcoy. The work started on Monday and only happens at night, following eight such evenings the teams will have installed 148 sections of specially designed lighting. First to go up were 19 sections on the Plaza de Espana. Workers waited until the last bus at 10pm before moving in and erecting the heavy but decorative fiesta lights. Local Police were on hand to ensure that parking prohibitions were adhered to and that there was ample signage to warn those nearby of the ongoing work. Raul Llopis, Councillor for Fiestas said: “The teams work hard on the installation which we have done for the past 30 years. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience that the temporary works cause to residents.”

This work is in addition to a further investment made by the council of €148,000 where there was damage caused in the Rincon de la Zofra area. Locals have complained to the council that the diffifcult access to the coves, which also suffered significantly, be addressed. Councillor for Infrastructure Alfred Botella said: “We have already received authorisation from the head of the provincial services to improve the access to the seashore and will be speaking to the complainants to reassure them.”

Roots, romanticism Dog shelter fun day & revolution
Francisco Goya (1746–1828) was the most important European artist of his time and the one that exerted the most influence on the evolution of painting. Thirty years into his career, he was struck with an illness that left him deaf but not blind. The imagery and imagination that pervades Goya’s work in the first phase of his career was deeply influenced by the cultural and social events of his contemporary world. The eighteenth century was a period of great social change in Europe and Goya was one of the primary artists to depict this time. On Saturday, 4th of March at 10:30am, Karla Darocas, Hons.B.A. Fine Arts Historian, will be giving a lecture with slide presentation on the artworks, life and times of Goya called Roots, Romanticism and Revolution. The lecture will explore the early education of Goya in Zaragoza by profiling his most influential teachers. Then, the lecture will travel through his most charming artworks that explore the theme of “leisure” life while highlighting his most important patrons. Then as he comes to the Court of Carlos 4th as the official painter to the King, both life and his art becomes grander and finally out of control. This event will take place at the Church Centre in the old town of Javea (Carrer Favara 8). Reservations are a must to secure your seating. Lecture fee is 10 euros and this will also give you a raffle ticket to win a piece of Goya-inspired artwork by Karla Darocas. Reserve Online - www.SpainLifestyle.com or by phone 648 156 066.

Water goes further ALFAZ DEL Pi council are to splash out €60,000 on extending the town’s irrigation network. A one-kilometre pipeline from Cami del Masset will take the recycled water from Benidorm’s waste treatment plant as far as the Escandinavia park. The project is expected take three months to complete and the contract has been put out to tender. “We are carrying out the project in conjunction with the Regantes del Canal Bajo de l’Algar whose members use the water for crop irrigation,” explained Town Planning councillor Toni Such. The town hall is keen to increase the resources that are available for irrigation and plans to use recycled water in other parts of Alfaz. These include the Los Carrascos Landscape and Environment Centre in Albir whose 11,000 square metres are a reserve for 140 plants and flowers that are native to the Sierra Helada national park.

21st birthday for A 21st Birthday Party is a must for anyone! As one of Spain’s premier currency transfer providers, reaching 21 is a big deal! The party was hosted alongside Currency Direct’s long time media partners the EWN. Helad at Marbella’s Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa, a great time was had by all. Group Corporate Director John Thomson was overseeing, with canapés, drinks and ambience in abundance in Joe’s Bar. Long term clients, friends and family all attended from both companies, travelling in from all over the Costa Blanca. Currencies Direct Southern Europe director, Peter Loveday and his team hosted this great celebration. Peter spoke of the company’s rise from small seeds to an enterprise with 14 offices in Spain, and a product which means “we buy in huge volumes at great rates and we pass these benefits onto our clients.” He generously took time out not only to thank everyone for coming, but also asked everyone to spare a thought for little Leo Bermejo, from Almeria, who has so bravely been battling his cancer.
24 feb - 2 march 2017
“So many people in the community have helped this little family. The way people have rallied round to raise money and help Leo is just marvelous,” he said. Leo’s brave battle has featured prominently in EWN and in our hearts, as he takes his trip to the US, hopefully for the treatment that will rid him once and for all of the cancer that has plagued his young life. After Peter’s generous speech, EWN’s managing director Michel Euesden had a surprise in the form of a giant birthday cake – so large it had to be wheeled in – to wish the company many more years of success. It was accompanied after a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ by a salute from two canons which fired orange confetti and mini-euro notes into the air! On such a wonderful night, you want your choice of music to make it a celebration to remember. This was achieved with the stunning vocals of Mr Maph and Simone Lisa. The couple have been together for more than 30 years providing amazing solo and duet pieces for R&B, Soul, Reggae…you name it and they have it in their marvelous repertoire. From the driving vocals of Ike and Tina Turner’s Nutbush City Limits to Bob Marley’s greatest, it’s all there. They were supported by Marbella-based entertainer Antony Wolfson and his inimitable take on the Presley greats. He’s a man who is neither a tribute artist nor an impersonator, but a singer who lives and breathes the songs of his great hero Elvis. When you’ve been praised by the great man’s wife, you can’t go higher than that. Topping off the musical offerings were several from Steve Cline, including Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline. The thunderous applause after every act showed just what an appreciative audience was there on the night. This quartet made it a night that will live long in the memory. In keeping with the business of the hosts on such a wonderful evening, the guests were greeted by two giant balloon structures, one a euro and the other a pound sign. Guests were generously supplied with money and although it was fake on this occasion, it did mean entitlement to cocktails throughout the evening! When you’ve turned 21, you want a night to remember…everyone at Puente Romano joined in the Happy Birthday salute to their hosts, Currencies Direct, taking away memories of a great night on the Costa del Sol… here’s to the next 21 years!!!!

Library’s 10th anniversary THE La Nucia Caravana Library has celebrated ten years of success. Since opening in 2007 it has had 270,000 users. by Caroline Tyszka The La Nucia council had no idea how popular their out of town facility would be when the doors first opened on February 15, 2007. To celebrate the momentous occasion Dr Migual Llopis donated 70 books to the facility at a special presentation ceremony. Throughout the week all users of the library were given a special book to commemorate the tenth anniversary and encourage reading. The library covers an area of 623 square metres and offers users an adult area equipped with a meeting space, books to borrow and an internet space. In addition there is a multimedia area where visitors can listen to music and watch dvd’s with headphones.
The two libraries (adults and children) are located in different rooms so as not to disturb each other, with a café, recreational area with children’s playgrounds and parking spaces complementing the library. Bernabe Cano, mayor, said: “Ten years ago we made a clear commitment to decentralise cultural services and bring them closer to the residents with the opening of the Caravana Library. When it opened its doors we never thought that it would have so many users. It has become a regional benchmark in an ideal location for parking and offering services for the many different nationalities that we are proud to have in La Nucia.”

Perfect conditions for mosquitoes
Ignacio Torres
ALICANTE province can expect a mosquito population explosion later this year following torrential rainfall. Water that has accumulated in no longer drought-ridden wetlands and agricultural land will provide a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, predicted a specialist fumigation company. Storms in December and January left 500 millimetres of rain and once temperatures begin to rise this will hasten the insects’ biological cycle, warned the company’s biologist Ricardo Costa. He recommended that councils take preventative measures as soon as possible and in some zones these would have to include fumigation from the air, he said. The public could also help to eliminate the nonnative tiger mosquitoes that have invaded the coast in recent years by not allowing water to accumulate in buckets, drums or guttering, Costa added.

The Amadorio reservoir
No longer running on empty THE Amadorio reservoir which was nearly dry last autumn now has an excess of water. The dam currently holds 12 cubic hectometres of water, compared with 0.5 last autumn. Some of this could be made available for agricultural use, the Xoriguer environmentalist group suggested in a letter to Marina Baja town halls, the Diputacion and the Comunidad de Regantes who pay to water crops. Following the heavy rains of December and January, the Regantes’ deposits and ponds are full and it should be possible to open these more frequently to send water along the network of irrigation channels, Xoriguer pointed out. Not only would this improve the quality of crops but it will also reduce the build up of salinity and pollutants in the ground owing to the quality of the recycled water that growers have been forced to use in recent years.
Cash for clothes by Caroline Tyszka
THE Social Welfare department in La Nucia has been presented with €1,964 from a company that has collected used clothing and shoes in the town. Texlimca, who have thirteen collection containers at various points in La Nucia collected a total of 24,450 kilograms of used clothing and footwear in 2016, a rise of 12% from 2015. The Valencian company, who ensure that 100% of what is donated is used, donate to La Nucia €0.08 per kilo collected. Receiving the money Bernabe Cano, mayor, said: “This money, for social aid use, is the result of the effort of all those who have separated their used clothing and footwear and deposited it in the used clothes containers. This, in addition to being more environmentally friendly and saving on waste management, gives us funds for social welfare, we would like to thank everyone for their collaboration and environmental awareness and ask that they continue to deposit used clothing and used footwear in the corresponding containers.” Clothing and toys that are in very good condition can be donated directly to the El Calvari Social Centre on a Thursday. This is then given to those in the region suffering from financial hardships.

Memorial Tribute by U3A Moraira-Teulada On an unusually cold and miserable day, on 11th February, about 150 people gathered at Moraira Park for a commemoration to dedicate a bench bought by members of U3A Moraira-Teulada, in memory of the late Shirley Baehr. Shirley, who was one of the founder members of Moraira-Teulada U3A, was the Group Coordinator from almost the first day of its inauguration, in 2008. Shirley was a very enthusiastic committee member and, as Group Coordinator, many of her ideas for new Groups are still running successfully. Shirley’s family flew out from various parts of the world to Moraira to join her husband Laurence, her family and many
friends and members of U3A for the remembrance. The current President, John Hopwood, gave a short speech and glasses of cava were raised in a toast. The bench is placed near an olive tree planted to commemorate the late Pamela Kershaw, the original founder member of this U3A, and when a short tribute was made by former President Ann Colclough, Ann wryly commented that “they can now talk to each other forever”, which brought a burst of laughter from those present. The bench is in a lovely position in the park behind the beach, near to the Petanque rinks and looking out to sea. Members are encouraged to visit the area.

A Spanish North Pole I’ve lived in Spain now for nearly 27 years, and I don’t regret a minute of it. The only trouble is that this year’s been the worst I can remember. I never thought I’d see snow on the beach near my flat at Altea, and that b – y wind nearly crippled my chilblains. And it’s still not over. This isn’t Spain any more. It’s the North Pole! Benidorm cycling lanes gone mad!
Is it just me or has Benidorm Town Hall gone mad? It seems that everywhere you turn recently there is a new cycling lane. By the edge of the road where we all expect them to be, and now, right down the CENTRE of major roads. Cyclists generally do not regard road signs at the best of times, and now they are flying across busy junctions, through red lights, between two moving streams of traffic etc!! Alternatively there seems to be many new multi million euro cycle paths completety empty. Yours, Disgruntled Driver
A night at the flicks
I love Spain and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the world. However there are one or two things which irritate me. Why oh why do we have to travel so far to see and hear a good concert or opera? Our local cinema in Denia is doing a fine job transmitting live performances of opera and ballet from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, but although I admire their initiative, it’s not the same as the real thing. And talking of cinema why do nearly all the local Spanish cinemas refuse to show more than one original language films a week when there are so many expats living in their area? What’s more the one film they show is usually the worst of the week’s bunch. I’d love to know what other film buffs like me feel about this? Dorothy Pilger-Smythe Denia
Justice gone wild
My husband died in 2010 but it wasn’t until the following year that I discovered he had left enormous debts. That was the start of a year of nightmares for me as not one of the local authorities offered any help about who I could see for advice. But the worst was to come when I discovered that for years my husband had not only been having an affair with a Spanish woman but that they had a six year
old daughter. Imagine my horror when one morning I was summoned to court in Alicante where a Spanish judge told me that I was responsible for the maintenance of the child until she had reached the age of 18 and that if I didn’t keep up with the payments I would be evicted from my home. Is this what they call Spanish justice? Elsie Jackson (Mrs) Villa Joyosa

Spanish Property Ownership by

What BREXIT could mean for property owners in Spain The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union has raised important questions in regards to how such a move will affect British buyers of property in Spain or current Spanish property owners. Using the skills and experience of its staff, Wincham is monitoring the situation very closely and will continue to be at the forefront of events as they develop, offering support and expert advice to new and existing clients. Living in an uncertain world by
Jennifer Cunningham
What a fascinating few weeks it has been with regard to the new President of America. I, along with many, felt very unhappy about even the thought of Trump becoming President. I realise there are many in America that supported him and still do, but I am unsure if they all understand, for instance, what a dreadful decision he made regarding Muslims coming into America, with bona fide reasons for wanting to travel to the US, with permissions which took years to be granted. These people are not the terrorists that he suggests, just traumatised families escaping a war zone. He would be better to concentrate on the real threat to the Western World - ISIS, the Syrian President and Putin. Within the first few weeks Trump has already lost his CIA Director James Woolsey and now his National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn and I don´t expect them to be the only ones. With regards to the seven countries whose people were banned from entering the States by Trump, this obviously is now causing a huge rift between the President and the Supreme Court, which does not bode well. Having recently watched a press conference, which was reminiscent of his campaign presentations, where he continually attacked the press both in America and the UK. I was flabbergasted and have never seen anything like this, either in the UK or America, in my lifetime. On listening very carefully to all the arguments for and against Brexit, I along with many Expats are amazed at the total lack of interest in those of us Brits living
within the EU. I for one am not worried about Spain’s reaction – they couldn´t afford to get rid of us and then have the Spanish living in the UK returning home to add to the unemployment list. It just doesn´t make economic viability. However, not much in life at the moment seems to make sense. Something that does make a lot sense, whilst living in Spain, is to take responsibility for inevitable that will happen to all of us. I understand in the UK that the uptake on funeral plan purchases is quite staggering. I find this quite refreshing as it means that the British are at long last able to discuss their demise in a clear and constructive way. One wonders if this is down to the “baby boomers” coming of age at long last. I realise that some of the “baby boomers” are living in Spain but there are many others who need to be persuaded that a funeral plan is essential, especially when living in a country and culture different to their own. Why do I say that? I felt the need to start to offer funeral plans after I lost my husband in unexpected circumstances many years ago. Not only was it very expensive but exceedingly stressful. I must admit that I had never heard of funeral plans been available in Spain before his death. Last year sadly, I lost my partner, and again it was a steep learning curve but a very different one. Philippe wasn´t very interested in a funeral plan, as he was Belge /French and had never heard of them and like many men he didn´t believe it would happen to him ( I hear this often), although I was very close to persuading
him. When his two sons arrived in great distress from Belgium, they could do nothing until they had obtained their own NIE´s, not even to request a funeral (even I didn´t know this). Had a funeral plan been in place, the whole procedure would have been very much simpler, far less stressful and they would not have had the additional burden of having to find a large sum of money immediately. They would still have required NIE´s for all the other issues but not for the funeral. Even with my help and others, it took over two weeks before they were able to return home, and they have since had to return to continue the paperwork. This has obviously been very costly and emotional for them both. Without myself and the help of my staff, I dread to think how much longer everything would have taken. As far as I am concerned, it is the most loving and supportive action that you could do for each other and your entire family. So therefore why not take a moment of your time and ask yourself – have you done all you can to help your partner and your family cope with one of the most dreadful times of their lives – or are you going to ignore the inevitable and leave your family to sort out everything that is required of them? Having had experience of this and seen the effect it had on my partner’s two sons, who in their grief had to deal with the whole process of a funeral, instead of making one call, to have it all organised and paid for. How much simpler it could have been. You know it makes sense. Contact one of my offices for more information or go to my website www.jennifercunningham.net

Machines could take over the future EVER since the Jewish religion introduced the concept of the Golem in the middle ages, a mud statue brought to life but without a soul, mankind has believed that human replicas could eventually be animated and created with intelligence. By John Smith The word Robot was first introduced to the world in 1920 in a play and since then, the concept of a mechanical being has been expanded to include Android (human robot) and Cyborg (man-machine hybrid). Popular culture abounds with references to these man created machines and robotics have been used in industry for many years now but the European Parliament is worried that as they become more human in form and thought, their existence should be covered by law. MEPs have therefore been presented with a report which recognises that there is a new revolution in robotics and artificial intelligence and therefore laws should be passed before it is too late to regularise their
production and ‘lives’. In essence the reports suggests that the parliament needs to decide whether there is such a thing as an ‘electronic person’ and if so what rights if any they should be given. In addition, MEPs are recommended to instruct manufacturers to come up with an easy way to terminate the robots ‘life’ if necessary. In his 1950 novel ‘I Robot’, science fiction writer Isaac Asimov created the three laws of robotics which were built into the brains of all robots and these are; “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.” “A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.” “A robot must protect its own existence as
Robots could take over Photo Credit: Willyam Bradberry Shutterstock
long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.” It is possible that these ‘laws’ will be part of any new EU legislation especially as artificial intelligence becomes more than a jerky white plastic robot playing chess and humanoid androids start to take over work from human beings. It is already anticipated that call centres manned by humans will disappear within the
next 10 years or so and as we enter the ‘Brave New World’, the EU wants to ensure that it does become a dystopian nightmare as seen in ‘The Terminator’ and ‘The Matrix. It is however unlikely that legislators will be brave enough to stop the inevitable job losses that will occur when big business is able to use artificially intelligent creations which don’t have unions, lunch breaks, wage demands, holidays or maternity leave.
Enjoy free coffee and pay for your time By John Smith TWO major developments have caused some problems for High Street operators and a Russian entrepreneur may just have found the answer. When the coffee revolution saw the expansion of companies such as Starbucks, Costa Coffee and even McCafe across Europe, it created a whole new generation of baristas and customers but this coincided with the growth of home working for many. Rather than hang around in the house, individuals with their lap tops started to congregate in these coffee shops to take advantage of the trendy interiors, good coffee, warm surroundings and free WiFi. The problem that arises is that these individuals take up space and unless they are keeping the corporate coffee cup loaded, are not generating the sort of profits that these international (and even independents) need to keep in business. A few years ago, a Russian poet turned businessman Ivan Mitin expanded a poetry group which met in bars and cafes in Moscow so that it had a regular meeting place called the Treehouse. At that time, he relied on donations to ensure that he was able to secure the room on a regular basis but having decided that this was a somewhat
precarious situation he came up with the idea of charging people to attend. As this went so well he expanded the concept and created Ziferblat which means Clockface in both German and Russian with the concept that people would pay by the minute to use a room as a café and meeting place but all food and drink would be free. So successful was this concept that he soon found himself opening a number of these rooms around Russia and in 2014 opened his first Ziferblat in London. Very simply visitors receive a clock when they arrive and pay 3p (4c) per minute whilst using the room. There are no waiters but guests can make themselves tea and coffee, have biscuits and cakes and use the free WiFi whilst chatting with friends or sitting at their laptops working. Unlike a coffee shop, the laid back atmosphere encourages people to talk to each other and there is background music as well as occasional performances by local musicians with artists often welcome to hang their work on the walls. Whilst this wouldn’t suit everyone, the concept is such that it has expanded within the UK to Liverpool and Manchester and other sites where rents are not too high will be developed. As the business continues to develop so it will no doubt head for popular cities with trendy student populations such as Amsterdam and Barcelona.

Spotted I was on my way to New York last week for a mini break with my gals, swanning through Terminal 5 and a very animated young lady invited us to be checked in VIP, of course we followed with wide eyes (thinking free UPGRADE!) We then met a lovely “chatty Cathy” who asked us a bunch of questions about our trip. Now, my friends started giggling and asking if I recognised the BA staff member… erm no I didn’t, then after a few moments I realised, its only blooming EMMA BUNTON from the SPICE GIRLS! Undercover Comic Relief prank apparently! Gutted, because I found out Tom Daley and David Walliams were there moments earlier!

Adele received 5 nominations winning all 5 Beyonce received a whopping 9, winning 2 Being the gracious gal that she is, Adele emotionally dedicated her “Album Of The Year” award to B.
Trumped out Super awkward! Sheltering from a blizzard in the entrance of Trump Towers in NYC and being ordered to MOVE ON by machine-gun-clad officers!
Most random collaboration Metallica and Lady Gaga. Gaga was on top form, but due to microphone issues the performance felt awkward.

Tattoo Convention – A first for Benidorm Benidorm already hosts a number of unique events throughout the year – and will be adding another string to its bow next month with the very first Tattoo Convention to be staged on the Costa Blanca.
Johnny Strange
EddyPatry Elaine Davidson By Irena Bodnarec The three day event is taking place over the busy St Patrick’s weekend which witnesses part of the resort turn into a sea of green, with an influx of Brits ready to party the weekend away. The event is taking place at the Hotel Mediterraneo, located opposite the iconic Benidorm Palace and fully supported by both the town hall and Tourism Foundation. Over 40 tattooist are taking part, not only from across the whole of Spain and UK but even travelling from Singapore, Thailand, France and Portugal – each with their own unique style. You will be able to browse and watch artists at work and book in for an inking over the course of the three days. Each day the artists will compete against each other in a competition for different categories such as Realism, Old School, Black & Grey and Colour, winning a stunning 3D award designed by Skullture Barcelona. In addition to tattoo stands there will also be merchandising stands selling T-Shirts, accessories, a caricature artist, 1950’s ladies fashion and quirky jewelry. The authentic Eddy Patry Barbershop team will be there, an old school American set up, with each impeccably turned out in shirt, tie and waistcoat and whose showmanship and skill will leave you enthralled. Oscar Carvajal, a professional make up and body painting artist will also be on a stand – his work has featured in numerous prestigious glossy magazines and graced many fashion and haute couture catwalks. He will be on hand for makeovers and style tips. Two Guinness World Record Holders will also be making special appearances. The first is Elaine Davidson, who is the holder for being the most pierced woman in the world – over 9,000 weighing in at over 3kg! She will be performing some jar
dropping stunts throughout the three days and the other record holder is Johnny Strange, a professional daredevil performer. He holds the titles for the heaviest object lifted by pierced ears and the heaviest vehicle pulled by pierced ear… a Cessna 172-P aircraft incase you are curious. He will be doing two shows every afternoon which will leave you terrified and astounded in equal measures. There is also entertainment for the little ones, with Chris Mitchell doing some children’s workshops. He is writer and illustrator of the Realm Legends, a cartoon fantasy series and tours around schools and festivals in the UK and also Lauren Staton, a professional face painter and founder of Snazaroo. The convention will also have a full programme of entertainment and other things to look out for, particularly for the gentlemen are tattoo models Marta Boo and Mary Thunder, who will both be performing their burlesque shows, with Marta Boo incorporating a stunning fire act; 1950’s ladies catwalk fashion show; Seysart, an award winning graffiti artist; Benidorm’s fantastic Meatloaf tribute act, local DJ Jeff Spinner and rock bands after dark. The Mayor, Toni Perez will officially inaugurate the convention at 11am on Friday 17th March and there will be an Irish theme to welcome everyone in – tickets available at the door.

A full house, eyes down and concentrate! THE U3A Vall del Pop 10th Anniversary quiz began quietly, with all 61 players apprehensive and all the teams nervous not to be placed last. All the questions were linked, sometimes rather tenuously, to the Vall del Pop, the U3A, 10 years and valleys. A side order of cryptic drinks and some very obscure photos from TV sitcoms completed the menu. The U3A team were anxious when 50’s and 60’s sitcom questions were thrown into the arena! It would appear that no one had a television in those days and the anticipation of the usual sport and general knowledge questions was in doubt. The team was not looking confident! Pub drinking during mis-spent youth was more likely than watching TV! At the end of Round 2 and the meal many raffle prizes were gladly received. Owing to a wealth of knowledge the winning team was ‘Not Completely Green’ with 60.5 points led by Barbara Hendry and Gordon Rodman. ‘Pooh Corner’ was second with 58 points followed by ‘Scrambled Eggheads’ with 55 .5 points. Well done all of you! Why not come and join us at the Vall del Pop U3A and enjoy good company and gather new interests. For more information visit http://u3avalldelpop.com.
Proteccion Civil, the Alzheimer Centre and Make A Smile. When asked about the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir’s 10th anniversary year, founder and president Mike Evans said, “The choir has come from very small beginnings in 2007 to a well-respected and constantly improving choir, which has earned its growing reputation and popularity. We look forward to a memorable season.” The CBMVC is also holding a 10th anniversary concert at Benitachell Church on 7th April at 7.30pm with free entry, no booking required and an exciting concert at the Cuevas de la Calaveres in Benidoleig on 30th June. It is hoped that the seated, open-air concert at Cuevas de la Calaveres, will be a lovely warm evening, when the choir will sing in the wonderfully acoustic entrance to this historic cave. Tickets price €10, support the single-parent charity Guardian Angels and Proteccion Civil, Benidoleig. For reservations, please call 965 744 577 or email cbmalevoicechoir@gmail.com.
Barn Dance Success
THE enthusiastic group of residents and friends, nearly 70 of them, who braved the rather inclement weather on Wednesday night to attend the Anglican Chaplaincy barn dance, were rewarded with an evening full of fun and good cheer! The floor of the Ermita San Josep in La Fustera was cleared for the evening and very soon experts and beginners alike were square dancing and ‘reeling’ away guided by the very professional calling of Eileen Hodson, supported by her husband Raymond, who helped demonstrate some of the more complicated steps. Raymond also did a great job sorting and playing the recorded music, while Dave Peachey added his own touch to the evening by playing live a number of the line dance and country tracks. The catering team organised a tasty Ploughman’s supper and the pay bar was busy all evening, after all dancing is thirsty work! When the dust had settled and the hay bales cleared away, Eileen was able to announce that €1,000 had been raised and the money would be split between The Friends of the Children of Emaus and the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy. For more information on the churches of the Chaplaincy and the work they undertake in the area, visit www.costablanca-anglicanchaplaincy.org.

End of an era
Sylvia receiving a framed certificate as an Honorary Member of the clubfrom the new President, Brenda Russell
At the recent AGM of the Valleys International Bridge and Social Club, the President Sylvia Hollender announced her decision to retire. Sylvia was a founder member of the club since it was formed in the Jalon Valley and served on the Committee since it moved to El Cid Restaurant in the Orba Valley and became a properly constituted Club, some thirteen years ago. Sylvia became president and has lead the club with distinction and calm friendliness ever since. As she says herself, The Valleys has been an extremely important part of her life in Spain. The reason for her retirement is because she intends to spend her summers in the UK and return to Spain when the weather cools down. She had considered being a part time president, but realised that even a small club like theirs needs a full time leader. She will, of course, return to the Valleys every week whilst she is in Spain, where she will be welcomed by the members for her exhaustive knowledge and charming company.
Javea Players present Sand Castles THE next production by the Javea Players will be Sand Castles and it will run from Monday 27th March until Saturday 1st April at 8pm in the Javea Players’ Studio Theatre. Written by Bob Larbey and Directed by Roger Brown the play follows the story of William and Margaret Patterson, a relatively elderly couple who have holidayed in the same place for years and who own their own beach hut. This gentle comedy will appeal to all and you will readily identify with the characters and have a good laugh at their predicaments. Tickets cost €10 and include a pre-show drink and programme. Please note that there is a new online booking system which can be accessed at www.javeaplayers.com. Click on ‘bookings’ and follow the instructions. Any problems with booking please

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 12 represents Z and 23 represents R, so fill in Z every time the figure 12 appears and R every time the figure 23 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

Kenny, I am haunted by a dream that repeats often. Sometimes it is not the whole sequence that repeats, but a part of it always does. I find that I am being asked questions that I cannot answer and then I get upset. What does this mean? Sue J. Any such repeating dream, or part of it, serves to really get a message home to you. Very often it is you who needs to ask a question rather then you being unable to answer somebody else’s question. Are you currently upset about something? Or distressed about the way things panned out? Try before you sleep to have some questions you need answering and they will stand up to your being questioned. Flash up your silence as a refusal to answer anything you don’t have to, and as a way of saying that you are not to be messed with! This dream will leave you for sure, if you take control! Make a difference now that finally the time is right.
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
Take time to act coolly to a change in situation. Right now the Cosmos fuels you with energies and supports strongly your immediate need to continue on with something you gave up on. You had your reasons to do what you did, and it’s all about to make a difference now that finally the time is right.

The midweek opposition with Jupiter means that you will finally take a stand to enforce your own opinions, if that is what it will take to get your message out! Forget the idle negative comments of those who do not know all the facts, you do, and you must show those who doubt you now that above all you are determined and not to be messed with!
Some innermost energies are reaching out to you right now, and the subtle changes you have made just lately are certainly a feather in your cap. Not a time to think about anything but a time to do what feels instinctively right for you. You know what needs to be done and taking control is an agreement with yourself to move to where you should be!
It is stubborn pride that keeps somebody away from you right now. You did what you had to do and even in hindsight you can justify your actions since, for you, the truth will always win through whatever. Just as Jupiter takes on Mars, it is time to look ahead for a change, since you have a lot to gain and nothing whatsoever to lose this time around.
A focus on your domestic arrangements comes to the fore this week. You have been burning the candle at both ends and it is time to be a true part of the family once more. You have had your priorities in mind, but the warm support you get in return is much needed now. The Sun conjuncts with Neptune to allow for some much needed rest and relax.
A time to be a shoulder to cry on! As Mars opposes Jupiter there is an air of indecision and there needs to be a nip in the bud, which will be seen as a short sharp shock for someone. Expect only a temporary change in your stability as treasured routines may go out of the window and you are left alone, holding the fort for a change and doing a good lob
Mercury instills the value of hard work in the equation that relates to your innermost soul right now. This is the portent that you need to release some of that creative energy, allowing you to finally start thinking about the future, and your just desserts! If the time and tried doesn’t work then look at inner resources and at all the talent you hide inside.
Mercury takes on Pisces fairly and squarely with a view to spreading the word this week. It is time to renounce your silence and to let your views be known, as this will encourage much needed communication. Whilst you are at it this is the ideal time to take on a home based project that you have been putting off, but which now is even more necessary
The Sun conjuncts Neptune, and ambition is your guide right now. Plough your ideas and your aspirations into making the most of a loophole that will help you to establish yourself; and be very unafraid of the changes that you can now make. Better times are coming your way, and there will be no need to ever look back, unless you really want to!
Peaceful solution comes from your soulful innermost self and not as advice from those who seek to establish control on your behalf. There seems to be more than just meets the eye in something that has become a set back to your recent progress. In the opposition to Uranus, Jupiter makes sure that your intentions are really on the level
Either somebody has got hold of the wrong end of the stick, or your message may have been deliberately misconstrued. Whatever it is time to make amends and you must take steps to clear the way to a prompt resolution. The sextile with Ceres is calling time on resentment and misunderstanding, bringing a fully clean slate to work with.
The Mars opposition to Jupiter sponsors a plan to travel, but it is you who must take control of the forward planning, this time around. Having something to look forward to will allow you to shift your focus away from current problems, and this alone will serve to motivate you in many ways. Check the small print before you sign anything!!
The Sun conjuncts at the start of a very busy week; and one in which you will see your hopes and plans illuminated; so as to encourage you all the way. There are a few surprises around the corner and these are pointers as to which direction to take. Belief in yourself is the key to getting ahead and then there will truly be no stopping your progress.

Exercise could help shrink tumours Staying active during cancer treatment can improve survival rates. VIGOROUS exercise could help those going through treatment for cancer. Whilst it may be the last thing patients feel like doing, a group of researchers at the University of Copenhagen said it could be beneficial in the long term. They have been studying tumours in mice and discovered that intensive physical activity can help the body’s own defences shrink the growth of tumours by up to 50 per cent and believe there could be a similar effect to human cancer patients. Researchers found that ‘Natural Killer’ cells were directed towards tumours during vigorous exercise and they believe that the shot of adrenaline produced by a high-intensity workout helps move these immune cells towards lung, liver, or skin tumours.
Meanwhile Macmillan Cancer Care found 77 per cent of cancer patients had not received any advice from their physicians on the benefits of exercise. A review of six studies by Macmillan found 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week had a 40 per cent lower risk of breast cancer morality and breast cancer recurrence compared with women active for less than one hour per week.

Mind tricks to make you a healthier eater By Gemma Quinn A HEALTH psychologist who has studied eating behaviour and obesity for 25 years, believes there are simple tricks to making you a healthier eater: Accept the hunger Hunger pangs are not a sign to snack, it simply means you are getting hungry and so try and avoid the urge to snack and just enjoy your next meal. Three minute cravings Hunger isn’t just a physical process to do with how full or empty the stomach is, essentially hunger comes from the mind. ‘Cravings’ are not necessarily about the food but it represents and they usually only last a few minutes so go and distract yourself for three minutes to avoid the need for reaching for that chocolate bar. Anticipated regret Many who are trying to lose weight and eat healthier feel guilty when they eat a naughty treat and wish they hadn’t so next time you want that cake remember and imagine how you might feel afterwards. Even better, think about how good you will feel if you eat an apple instead. Cook from scratch You will be in more control of what you eat and avoid hidden sugars and fats in preprepared meals and sauces. Even if you are short on time, a quick pasta dish with a tin of tomatoes and diced vegetables is a healthier choice than putting a ready meal in the microwave.
What are the causes of smelly feet? IT is thought that around 20 per cent of the population suffer from foot odour, but what actually causes smelly feet? A poor diet, metabolic disorders, fungal infections, eating certain food or wearing shoes made of synthetic materials are all factors, according to the College of Chiropodists of Valencia (Icopv). However, the Icopv also noted that generally the most common cause of this problem is the proliferation of bacteria in the body due to excessive sweating. The use of deodorants and antiperspirants “is not a solution” said Icopv who recommend going to a podiatrist to determine the cause. Regarding treatments to solve the smelly feet, they can range from antibiotics or anti-fungals, applying drying powder treatments, the elimination of certain foods and in cases of extreme sweating, surgical treatments. To help prevent odour remember to wash feet daily and fully dry them. Avoid wearing shoes that are too tight or are made from synthetic materials, and opt for leather, canvas or mesh materials to allow the feet to breathe and wear socks that repel moisture, are wool or cotton.

Planting with purple PURPLE is actually the second most common flower colour, only trailing behind yellow, but we often fail to get the most out of it. It is an incredibly versatile colour, which can either be vibrant or subdued, so it really depends on what kind of statement you’re trying to make with your particular flower garden. If you’re going for a pale purple, lilac and lavender can be a lovely choice. The contrasting colour for violet and purple is yellow. The paler shades offered up by lilac and mauve look very nice next to creamy yellows, such as common primroses. When purples are placed alongside whites, silvers and greys, they look darker and more vibrant than they really are, and both colour groups pop. For something more dramatic, try morning glories or some purple gladiolus.
Asparagus is absolutely fabulous
Ancient art of Bonsai
ASPARAGUS is one of the few perennial vegetables out there, so once you get a good batch going, you’ll have harvests for year to come, and you’ll barely even have to do anything. The first year that you plant it, allow asparagus to grow completely and don’t even bother to harvest it. Just enjoy looking at those green beauties knowing they’ll be all yours for the taking the next time around. In the second year, harvest the asparagus when the spears are about ½ an inch in diameter, but only do this for two weeks. Cut or break off the spears at about the 7- to 9-inch mark with the tips tightly closed. In subsequent years, harvest the asparagus for somewhere between five and eight weeks, then wait for the shoots to become ferny so that the roots are sturdier and stronger when the following year’s crop comes in. A COMPLEX craft requiring a great deal of dedication and skilful artistry, Bonsai reflect the essence of gardening by capturing the vast and wild within the small and tamed. Literally translating as ‘planted in a container´, Bonsai has historically held fascination among a western audience, having been exported from the Orient at the turn of the last century. The horticultural practice has been around for a thousand years and involves growing a miniaturised version of a plant in the form of a tree. Plenty of species can be grow this way with the right conditions and skilled grower. Pruning, clipping, wiring and pinching all enable the artist to cultivate the strength, health and aesthetics of the plant. Bonsai sales have increased across Europe as more and more people hope to challenge themselves, but the number of true enthusiasts has remained fairly steady. This is because the typical variety sold in garden stores are ill-equipped to last very long. Bonsai are typically grown indoors but are also highly suited to their own temperate climate, which means growing Chinese or Japanese exported plants in Spain is likely to lead to disappointment. By selecting a suitable Spanish plant with a strong trunk and following the right instructions, you can grow your own bonsai outside and open up a whole new chapter in your gardening experience.

Top tricks for a stylish home
By Eleanor Hawkins IF you’ve always drooled over stylish homes pictured in glossy magazines then wrung your hands in dismay after coming back down to earth and looking around you, you may well need these five top tricks to bring some style into your own home no matter what size it is or who lives there. Lose the clutter! The first thing to do is declutter. Make sure you have plenty of good, well-thought out storage to keep everyday items close to hand but safely out of the way. There are some very pretty boxes on the market which can be popped under beds or sofas and on top of cupboards without ruining the look of a room. Think about displays Shelves and mantelpieces benefit from carefully arranged accessories of different heights. Candles, framed prints and decorative items can be combined to complement and complete the look of a room. Clever with colour Choose an accent colour from the curtains, cushions and bedding and pick out accessories in complementary tones. Don’t forget a contrasting colour can also work, try grey with yellow or turquoise with pink for example. Break and soften Add colour to a plain bathroom or break up an expanse of monotonous kitchen units with texture and soft furnishings. Stylish tea towels of bathroom towels in a different shade could be all you need to turn it from dull to dramatic. Say it with flowers A bunch of flowers can create a focal point and lift a room. If you’re really not the floral type, a handful of decorative branches of twigs in a vintage-style milk bottle or modern vase can work perfectly.
Keep your towels softer for longer THERE’S nothing worse, particularly in Spain where they see a lot more use during the summer than elsewhere, than stepping out of the shower or climbing out of the pool and drying off with a towel like sandpaper. Luxurious feeling fluffy towels depend not just on their quality but also on how they’re cared for, and a lot of us are killing the fluffy feel ourselves without really realizing it. Hotel laundry staff use the following tips to help towels last longer: - A good shake before they go into the washing machine opens up the fibres a little which helps detergents sink into the material. - Specific detergents with softening properties are used in hard water areas to stop the texture going harsh. - Fabric conditioner is used sparingly. Although it improves the smell and softness, too much will stick to fibres, making them lose absorbency and eventually fall out. - Whenever possible towels should be hung out to dry in fresh air and only given a quick spin in the tumble dryer to fluff them up. Strange as it may sound, a tennis ball or two should always go in the dryer with towels to aid the fluffing process.

Huawei's Honor 6X Is a Sleek and Affordable Dual-Camera Smartphone Last year, the Honor 5X by Huawei shook up the affordable smartphone scene by bringing high-end features such as a metal body and fingerprint scanner. With the device’s successor, Honor 6X, the Chinese tech giant continues the trend by introducing a dual-camera sensor, more powerful hardware, and a bigger battery into a sleeker and more compact body. The Honor 6X has retained the restrained design language of its predecessor, but it is considerably sleeker. Once again, the manufacturer wants you to focus on the device’s metal body and large display. That said, the phone looks good in the metal, though also a tad generic.

How to Add a Printer to Windows 10
Most printers are connected to PCs with a USB port and often work as soon as soon as you plug them in (and many work wirelessly!). A new printer may also come with a driver disc. Here’s how to add a printer to Windows 10: Sign-in or log on to your Windows 10 computer with an administrator account. Connect your printing device to the PC. Click the Start button from the desktop screen. From the Start menu, click Settings. On the SETTINGS window, click Devices. Once the DEVICES window opens up, from the left pane, make sure that the Printers & scanners category is selected. From the right pane, under the Add printers & scanners section, click Add a printer or scanner. Wait while Windows searches for the connected printer.Note: If Windows finds the printer, you can click its name and can follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.
radio button. Click Next to continue. On the Choose a printer port window, leave the default options selected and click Next. Note: If you are an advanced user, you can also choose a different option from the Use an existing port drop-down list, or you can define your own port by selecting the Create a new port radio button and specifying your custom port in the enabled field before clicking Next.
If Windows cannot detect the connected printer, click the The printer that I want isn’t listed link.
On the Install the printer driver window, from the displayed list of printer manufacturers in the left section, click to select the one to which the connected printer belongs. From the right section, locate and click to select the specific model of the printer that is connected to the PC.Note: At this point, you can also click the Have Disk button and browse and locate the driver for the connected printer if you have downloaded it manually from its official website. Click Next to proceed to the next step.
On the Find a printer with other options window, click to select the Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings
On the Type a printer name window, in the Printer name field, type an informative name for the printer and click Next.
On the Printer Sharing window, make sure that the Share this printer so that others on the network can find and use it radio button is selected.Note: If you do not want to share the printer with the network users, you can select the Do not share this printer radio button and jump to step 20. In the Share name field, type a short share name for the printer. Note: The name you specify here will be displayed to the remote users when they search for this printer over the network. Optionally you can populate the Location and Comment fields with your preferred information. Click Next to continue. On the final page of the wizard, click the Print a test page button to check the connectivity and proper functioning of the printer. (Optional) Click Finish to complete the process.

By Mathew Elliot
Road safety or robot apocalypse? Autonomous Car: Would you be comfortable on the roads with one? WOULD you trust an autonomous car? That was the question put to British motorists in a wide ranging survey and the answer was a resounding no. The behavioural scientists behind the research found out what anyone probably could have guessed – people don’t really trust machines, especially new-fangled ones zooming them along a packed motorway at 80mph surrounded by thousands of other ‘self-aware’ motorised computers. Almost seven in ten said that people should be in control of their cars at all times, while more than half said they would feel uncomfortable even sharing the road with an autonomous vehicle. Aside from latent fears of a robot apocalypse the main reason given was that the self driving cars would simply lack the common sense needed on the roads, where human error is frequent and it’s essential to be able to take quick instinctive action to avoid a crash. People also wondered what would happen in the event of a technical malfunction and thought the flow of cars would be very difficult for a machine to judge.
Bengala
More Ferrari By Matthew Elliott BENGALA has pledged to make a carbon fibre conversion for the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. It will be the first project from the Spanish tuner’s new ‘privilege program’ and come as part of a very select few examples numbering just ten. One F12 Caballeria has already been crafted by the boutique design firm based in Madrid which claims all the planned F12 conversions will be complete by next summer. The body of the custom F12 is entirely composed of carbon fibre and has been hailed as ‘adding more Ferrari to the Ferrari’.
Look out Geneva! The 2017 Geneva Motor Show will no doubt feature many mouth-watering at eye-watering prices, but the street-legal Glickenhaus hypercar will be one of the top drawers. Capable of a speed in excess of 215mph (350kmh), the Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG003S, is a car for the very purest purist. Horses are likely to be 750-plus from a 4.4-litre twin turbocharged motor with the carbon-fibre body built in Italy by Manifattura Automobil in Torino. If you fancy one, a price tag of $1.3m equates to €1.180m and that´s just for starters. The price tag is also matched by its rarity – the company plan to manufacture only ten! If you’ve got that kind of money to spare, Geneva next March could be the place to take your cheque book.

Italian stallion
by Matthew Elliott ALFA ROMEO has come out of the woodwork as Italian brand’s protracted comeback continues. And where else to make a splash than the luxurious SUV market which is thriving in the States and growing steadily in Europe? The 2018 Stelvio is named after the Stelvio Pass in the Alps, reportedly one of the world’s most gorgeous roads to drive down, and couples Alfa’s distinct design heritage with a modern powerhouse. With more than 500hp it can reach 60mph from a standstill in 3.9 seconds with a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine and up to 20-inch wheels. A revamped infotainment system offers Apple CarPlay and a semi-intelligent cruise control system that screams warnings at any impending doom on the roads.
Where is the Apple iCar? By Matthew Elliott ONE giant apple-shaped elephant in the showroom is the heavily anticipated, inevitable and yet shrouded in mystery arrival of tech giant Apple into the motoring industry. There has been no official statement of intent from the Silicon Valley masterminds behind the iPhone over whether an iCar is on the horizon any time soon but the suspicions of potential competitors are certainly being aroused. Apple has already poached more than 1,000 engineers from top firms in the motoring world, including former Aston Martin and Tesla brainiac Chris Porritt. It has bought several enormous sites in California and Germany for research and development and registered the domain names apple.car and apple.auto and has reportedly been in talks to buy McLaren. What impact an iCar has on the motoring market is impossible to tell but its likely rivals will not be traditional manufacturing powerhouses like BMW and Audi. Instead it’s enormous hundred billion dollar plus budget will probably be aimed squarely at competitors in the tech world, namely Google and Tesla. Given Apple’s niche is innovation the iCar will almost certainly be a self-driving electric vehicle with a groundbreaking infotainment system linked through the Cloud to other gadgets such as its iPhone and Mac computer.
2017 Mazda CX-3 This is the best subcompact crossover for you if styling and sportiness mean more to you than utility. Introduced for model-year 2016, the CX-3 belongs to a booming new segment of SUVs smaller and less expensive than compact-class crossovers such as the Honda CR-V or Mazda’s own CX-5. The CX-3 is the most stylish entry in the class, and arguably the most fun to drive. For its sophomore season there are a couple new paint colors, new standard features for the most popular trim level, and a price reduction for an option package that delivers some desirable safety gear.

Javea Green Bowlers represent Spain in Malaga TWO MEMBERS of Javea Green Bowling Club travelled to the Costa del Sol as part of a 10-man Spanish squad to compete in the annual Spain v Malaga match, a tournament of intensive bowling which takes place over two days. The event took place at Miraflores Bowls Club, just outside Marbella, and despite cold and windy conditions drew large crowds of spectators. Members of the Spanish team for many years, Paul Brown and Nick Cole have represented Spain in various world events including World Bowls Australia, Hong Kong and China, Cyprus, New Zealand and South Africa. They were chosen to play the men´s singles on this occasion and won all four of their matches. Both players are eagerly awaiting news of the team of 5 men and 5 women who will be selected to represent Spain in the Atlantic Rim competition in Cyprus in October, an important event which will act as qualification for the next World Championships in New Zealand in 2016.
Pego´s Golf ‘Singles’ Magic 3’ competition A beautiful day greeted all 33 members of Pego Golf Society on February 14 when they arrived to play the ‘Singles’ Magic 3’ competition at the Oliva Nova Golf course. Results: Division 1 1st Place with 42 Points was Malcolm Wise playing off Slope Handicap 9 2nd Place with 41 Points was John Snelling playing off Slope Handicap 13 3rd Place with 39 Points was Terry Oram playing off Slope Handicap 20 4th Place with 38 Points was Penny Barden playing off Slope Handicap 18 Division 2 1st Place with 36 Points was Paul Trigwell playing off Slope Handicap 25 2nd Place with 35 Points was Roger
Miller playing off Slope Handicap 28 3rd Place with 34 Points was Patrick Lynch playing off Slope Handicap 27 4th Place with 32 Points was Brian Baybut playing off Slope Handicap 23 There was only one 2 today and that was by Brendan Young. Brendan immediately donated the prize money to Los Hermanos of Gandia. Well done Brendan! The “Balls in the Water” prize was not won today with a mere 84 balls in the water. Nearest the hole at Hole 5 with their second shot was Celia Cronin with 3.6 metres, and at hole 16 the closest was Barry Levett with 2.63 metres. There were three first round match play results today and the results were as follows: John Evans beat Martin Gates
by 1 hole, Merv Joseph beat Susie Snelling by 1 hole, and John Guest beat David Phillips 5/3. This week brought the tragic news of yet another member who has passed away. Ronnie Webb, a stalwart of the Society and a fighter to the end, tragically passed away leaving so many from Pego to mourn his passing. The society offers its sincere sympathy and condolences to his wife and family. Pego Golf Society is playing a Singles’ Stableford competition in the near future, and if any member or guest would like to play please contact our secretary Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com or enter the competition through our website www.pegogolfsociety.com. A warm welcome awaits you !
Montgo’s John wins again at Barden’s golf medal competition On February 10 Montgo Golf Society played a medal competition at Oliva Nova, kindly sponsored by Brian and Penny Barden. It was a real day for the girls who made an almost clean sweep of the prizes, with only John Snelling being able to save face for the boys. John continues to be the man to beat, winning his second competition in two weeks with a fine 70 off 10.7. In second place was Francien Knoops with a net 73 off, pushing Gerian van Ooijen 6.9 into third place on countback. Feli Baybut completed the rout of the men by taking fourth place with a net 74 off 14.1. When it came to nearest to pins the men fared little better. Once again John Snelling was the only man to figure in the prizes by winning the 3rd, whilst Denise Cooper won the 5th and Francien Knoops took the 16th. Ros Fletcher ensured nobody else had a chance of winning the prize for the nearest to pin with her second shot on the 18th by holing her approach subsequently recording the society’s first “eagle” of the year, and to grab herself a coveted Montgo trophy ball. Geoff Willcock recorded the only other two of the day but missed the photo shoot, ensuring Mr Snelling looked like a bloke on a hen do! Montgo Golf Society’s next event is Friday February 24, when they will be playing a ‘Magic 3 Stableford’ competition at Oliva Nova, sponsored by Nigel Siddall. Guests are welcome, subject to availability and a current handicap certificate, and should register by visiting the website and completing an online booking form. www.montgogolfsociety.net
