Oprah Winfrey: Overcoming hardship
BORN in rural 1950s Mississippi to an impoverished teenage mother, Oprah Winfrey suffered abuse from the age of nine, ran away from home at 13 and became pregnant at 14, ultimately losing her first child. Despite challenges in the beginning of her life, Oprah is a sterling example of overcoming hardships, having become one of the most influential and well-known women in the world.
After moving to Tennessee to live with her father, Oprah began to excel in school S he d i d w ell i n publ i c speak i ng and deba t es and t ook a par t - t i me j ob read i ng ne w s for a local rad i o s t a t i on un t i l she earned a scholarship at Tennessee State College

Suddenly, Oprah was thrust into the spotlight with high expectations, however, the show failed and she was blamed She was demoted to a writing and reporting gig, but was a slow writer and uncomfortable with the kind of hard-nosed reporting required She eventually got a job as a host of A M Chicago, which became the highest-rated talk show in Chicago and was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show
Oprah said of her childhood and growing up: “I am so grateful for my years literally living in poverty, because it makes the experience of creating success and building success that much more rewarding ”

Talent and philanthropy: The rise of Shakira
WHILE it may be her personal life that has made most recent headlines, Colombian-Lebanese mega star Shakira has made it to the top of the business world, not only selling out stadiums and creating a line of no less than 30 perfumes, but has also made a difference along the way.
Here we explore the star’s philanthropical work. Shakira - meaning ‘grateful’ in Arabic - founded the ‘Pies Descalzos’ (Barefoot) Foundation during the late 90’s, aged just 18.
After seeing many children living in poverty on
Barranquila’s streets growing up, Shakira promised herself she would do something to help.
The charity’s name has a double meaning. It was the title of Shakira’s 1995 international hit record and also brings to mind the poverty of children who cannot afford shoes.
The foundation believes education is not only a basic right but also holds the key for society’s growth.
The Barefoot Foundation runs five schools, offering nutritious meals, education and psychological support to children and their families.
Some 4,000 children benefit from the charity’s work, which also operates in Haiti and South Africa. Shakira is also involved in advocacy efforts to raise awareness of children’s needs in Colombia, Latin America and around the World. She has spoken in numerous prestigious settings including the Oxford Union debating society. She also serves on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics in the United States and is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations children’s fund, UNICEF.
Tips from the top
KNOWING what you want to do in life is one issue in itself, but knowing how to start can be another one entirely.
That’s why the Euro Weekly News has put together this list of some of our tips, collat ed from successful businesswomen, on how to achieve success in your own venture.
Follow your heart Working is something you have to do day in and day, so make sure its some thing you enjoy do ing. Having passion for what you are selling or the service you are offering, is the best way to start as this will be your driving force.
Do your research Whilst passion is great for your business idea, you need to make sure what you are offering is what people want to buy. Taking some time out to do market research could
pay off in the long run. Start small You need to get the cash flow going as soon as possible, but do not overstretch yourself to start with. Focus on getting your product right and treat those first (and second, and third, and every client along the way) customers as kings and queens; their experience of your company could make or break
Be brave Start now - there is never a perfect time, perfect image, perfect weight, or perfect set of circumstances. Put yourself out there now. Now is the perfect time. Whether working from home or setting up an office or shop, always check with your local town hall and lawyer about how to run your own business.

Women putting the ‘business’ into showbiz
WHILE the word ‘business’ tends to conjure images of well-heeled professionals sitting behind desks or at the head of boardrooms, not all business looks quite so traditional.
Whether its producing, directing or acting, there are women making millions in the that business they call show business. Among them are multiple names who have taken the world by storm, and left their own mark on the industry at the same time.
One of the biggest names that spring most immediately to mind for those living in Spain is Penelope Cruz Sanchez, or as we know her; Penelope Cruz.
Born in Madrid, she is the daughter of Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna
Sanchez, a hairdresser.
Cruz’s first big international hit was again with Almodovar, in All About My Mother (1999), where she played an un- chaste but well-meaning nun.
Since then the Spanish star has appeared in a range of big films from Vanilla Sky (2001), and Captain Correllis Mandolin (2001) to Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and Nine (2009).
Married to megastar Javier Bardem, Cruz has since increased her wealth and profile even further with her own production company.
While Cruz may be one of the biggest names in Spainand the world- there are tens of actresses also killing it, both creatively and financially.
The highest grossing ac tress in the world, Scarlett Johansson shot to fame aged 19 in Lost in Translation alongside Bill Murray. She’s since grossed an astonishing $15.2 billion across 40 films. As the actress says, "I went through this realisation that acting, at its heart, is the abil ity to manipulate your own emotions."
Now so well-known for her global lifestyle super brand, Goop, that it is easy to forget she is also a hugely success ful actress, Gwyneth Paltrow has been starring in some of the biggest films for more than 20 years.
With an Oscar win and a worldwide gross of $11.6 billion behind her, Paltrow says, It's a waste of time for people to say
atopic dermatitis, and heal skin infections.
These healing oils derived from nature are infused into Maya Life’s hair serums, shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, face oils, and extracts. Everything is made using 100 per cent pure and organic ingredients harvested in the region of Sidi Ifni in Morocco, meaning you will know exactly what you are using on your skin. These incredibly effective oils have been used in Morocco for generations, obtained through a complex process of picking the fruits, drying them under the sun, manually peeling them and extracting the kernels, and then grinding these kernels to obtain a homogeneous dough that is rubbed for hours to extract the oil.
The reviews for Maya Life’s products speak for themselves, with many customers highlighting the positive changes they have seen in their hair and skin.
You can buy Maya Life products online on the website, or visit their Haman in San Pedro de Alcantara in Marbella, where the team can advise you on the best oils and creams for your skin and hair.

Maya Life, In San Pedro de Alcantara, brings customers the highest-quality Argan and Prickly Pear Oil to shampoos, conditioners, serums, oils and creams.
We spoke with Ibtissam, the owner and creator of Maya Life, about the business and what inspired her to create these natural, highgrade cosmetics.
Hi Ibtissam! Tell us a bit about yourself and Maya Life
At Maya Life, we sell beauty services and products. All of our products are 100 per cent natural and come from the region of Sidi Ifni in Morocco. People in Morocco have been using these oils
for generations to heal, protect and moisturise their skin and hair, now, I want to bring these amazing ingredients to Europe.
Have you always wanted to start a business and what inspired you to create Maya Life?
I love beauty and the cosmetics field, so I decided to create my own cosmetics brand and products.
We use naturally derived Prickly Pear and Argan Oil in our products, which are renowned for their healing and soothing properties, as well as anti-ageing and reducing the appearance of scars.
When did you start Maya Life?
I started Maya Life seven months ago. Although we are a new business, we have already built up a lovely customer base here in Marbella and our products are also available to buy on our website.
Our readers may have heard about Argan Oil, but what is so special about Prickly Pear?
Our flagship product is our Prickly Pear Oil, which is 100 per cent pure and organic. You can use it as a standalone or as a complement to your daily facial skincare routine. It’s non-greasy and
readily absorbs quickly so it's ideal for all skin typeseven for oily or acne-prone skin because of its anti-inflammatory properties. It provides luminosity, hydrates and smoothes wrinkles, so we believe it is a great natural alternative to botox.
Have you come across any differences between men and women in business?
In beauty, I see many more men wanting to use beauty and cosmetic products, which I think is great. Everybody wants to look after their skin and hair, it doesn’t matter about gender.
What motivates and inspires you?
My passion for organic and
natural beauty products inspires and motivates me. I am excited to be bringing these wonderful products to the market.
Do you have any advice for aspiring businesswomen?
Once you believe in what you want you can make it happen!
Where do you see yourself and Maya Life in 10 years?
I am aspiring to open five more Maya Life branches over the next 10 years.
A salon that feels like home
WORKING in beauty since her teens and training at some of the most prestigious hairdressing salons in the world, including Tony & Guy and L’Oréal, Kirandeep Ghataura has now launched her own stunning salon in Alhaurin el Grande, Malaga. With a rapidly-growing clientbase and a brand new interior, the team at XXVI Hair and Beauty will be holding their grand opening at the beginning of May and invite everyone to join the celebrations.
Kiran previously worked at well-known restaurant Olivia’s La Cala with her now partner before having their child, India.
Their daughter has been the driving force for this upand-coming beauty salon, with Kiran passionate about creating a space like no other - one that feels like home while making you
look your best.
Kiran said: “When I was working from home, I didn’t even advertise my services and my client-base continued to grow. I knew then that I have what it takes to open my own salon, and my clients agreed, because we are now coming up to
being fully-booked.
“Training with such prestigious companies like Tony & Guy showed me the level of service that is needed to be successful. I won’t accept anything less than excellence. I have my assistant Freya at the salon with me, and she helps with run-
ning the business, treatments, and welcoming the clients, and I am now looking to expand my dream team to help me to implement this further.”
The salon, perfectly located in Alhaurin Golf and under a popular pilates studio, is becoming the ‘go to’
place for hair and beauty and is gaining a lot of traction in the area. Whether you are looking for a new set of nails, a cut and colour, a set of false lashes, or a complete revamp, Karin aims to make your visit to the salon an experience. With plans to open an outdoor terrace where clients can sit, have a chat and enjoy a drink, this laidback approach feels like spending time with friends.
Karin said: “Lots of people have been popping in to the salon since we opened our doors around four weeks ago, and we have had plenty of bookings from previous clients as well as new. Being in the amazing location that we are, it’s a great way for people to come in for a chat while they are out walking
their dog, or come in and find out more about our services after they’ve been to their pilates class. We always welcome people coming in to discuss their beauty and hair needs.
“I wanted to create a space where people feel like they are going round to their friend’s house, a place that feels like no other salon but feels comfortable and relaxed. We have tea, coffee, Cava, magazines and always a listening ear for our clients, who we see as our friends. I love seeing people leaving the salon feeling amazing and looking glamorous, and I think that’s another reason why so many people rebook with us.”
With the salon now open and XXVI Hair and Beauty’s grand launch coming up in early May, Karin invites you to join the celebrations and find out about their amazing treatments.
Interview with Kirandeep Ghataura
HI Kiran! Tell us a bit about yourself and why you opened XXVI Hair and Beauty.
I have been living in Spain for 20 years and was working in salons as a nail technician when I was 15 and 16. I started hairdressing at 19 and trained in the UK at Tony & Guy and L’Oréal, entering in competitions and getting all of my qualifications before moving back to Alhaurin el Grande to start my own business. I opened XXVI Hair and Beauty around four weeks ago26 is my daughter’s birth date and so I named it after her.
We now do all kinds of treatments and the salon is completely brand new, I’ve just had all of my new furniture delivered which is so exciting, I can’t wait for my clients to see it all!
That sounds really exciting and congratulations! What made you decide to open XXVI and what was your inspiration?
I was working for another nail salon in Alhaurin el Grande and the owner decided to sell the business to someone else. I had
already built up my own clientbase after starting out working from home, and some of them have been coming to me for over 12 years. I realised that I could take this further than my mum’s sofa and open up my own salon.
I started from nothing but we are now fully booked and I have a great member of staff, Freya, who helps with the day-to-day running of things and making our clients feel amazing.
Do you have any female role models or role models in general?
I wouldn’t say I have any role models but my motivation comes from providing for my daughter. Since India was born, I have been determined to give her
the best and keep working on myself and the business to be able to show and prove to her what you can achieve.
I am inspired by successful businesswomen in general, as well as women who are juggling life, being a mum and their career, like many of my clients.
What do you enjoy most about running XXVI?
My clients, they are like my extended family and I have met thousands of amazing mums and other inspirational women. The salon is created to make women feel good about themselves and to take a break while having a chat and a coffee, so getting to know my clients has been one of the most rewarding and important things for me. We have only been open for around four weeks and we haven’t had our grand opening yet, but my clientbase is already growing and previous clients have followed me to the salon.
I wanted to create a space where people feel really comfortable, replicating the feeling of be-
ing in someone’s home, and this is something my clients really love. People can come in with their worries, exciting news, or just to have a chat, and they will always be welcomed with a listening ear, a comfortable chair and a cup of tea (or Cava)! I want clients to really enjoy their experience with us and leave feeling their best.
What advice would you give an aspiring young businesswoman?
Be brave. There is nothing you can really prepare for when opening your own business, it’s like having another baby. It’s not easy and you have to find the balance between personal life and business life, but it is so rewarding and I know I am doing this for my partner and my daughter.
I have a genuine and real passion for people and that always inspires me, I love catching up with long-term clients and getting to know new customers, seeing them leave the salon looking and feeling great is what really drives me.
Service, integrity and heart
IN an increasingly fastmoving world in which Tik Tok views and Instagram likes can seem to have overtaken traditional, grounded values, it can be a breath of fresh air to know that there are still businesses operating on the age-old principles of decency and customer service.
Bromley Estates is very much one of those companies.
Founded in 2009 by motivational sales trainer Hayley Bromley following her own challenging experience working with an estate agent on the Costa del Sol, Bromley Estates operates on one very solid principle; offering the highest levels of customer service.
With an ethos that means all clients receive exactly the same car-
ing, non-pressured and completely transparent service, their team offer complete A to Z sales care whether you are looking for a property worth €300,000 or €10 million.
This strong ethos running through the company stems from Hayley herself, who, having grown in the UAE and Jakarta where client care is paramount, wanted to bring those values to Spain.
She told the Euro Weekly News: “I wanted to start a business with transparency, integrity, and honesty; focused on customer service and not old-school sales pressure selling.
“You have to be on the side of the client. There’s no rush for the customer to make a decision on a property; if that means a sale takes one week or two years, that’s fine by us.”
With those firm principles herself, Hayley created a team who have been hand-selected for their equally caring and professional approach. They are then given both initial and ongoing training by accredited trainers Sebastian Bromley Bockweg, Hayley’s husband and Head of Acquisitions, and Sales Director Russell Klein.
Hayley explained: “That is our strength; we train everyone on the same programme, with a step-bystep handwritten portfolio about how we want the client to be treated, and then give ongoing training on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.”
With a complete service that includes everything from expert local advice to dealing with paperwork, putting you in touch with trusted
An interview with Hayley Bromley: The female behind Bromley Estates Marbella
WITH a team focused on providing their clients with customer service that goes above and beyond, Bromley Estates has grown into the leading real estate agency on the Costa del Sol.
We spoke with Hayley Bromley, the inspirational female behind the business.
Hi Hayley! Tell us a bit about yourself and the business I have lived in Spain since graduating college in Jakarta, Indonesia. Growing up in the UAE and Indonesia, I was raised in a multicultural, service-oriented environment. I was fortunate enough to have travelled most of the world by my mid20s; unknowingly, my diverse background would carve out my personal expectations and mould a young mind into the way I viewed independence and success.
Why did you decide to open Bromley Estates and what was the inspiration behind this?
It was 2007, the property market on the coast was at an all-time
high, with tales of investors buying multiple units. As a 33-year-old woman I didn’t want to miss out on investing. I made a few appointments to view some properties, it would be this experience that drove me to open my own real estate business just a year and a half later.
The experience was not a positive one, real estate services on the coast have come a long way since the last property boom. I was shown several properties, yet I never felt like a valued customer. I needed to know and feel that I was in good hands.
Marbella was hot property and customers were arriving in droves. No matter how buoyant, there was a space in the market for an agency that treats its customers as a priority, whose entire focus was not sales, but customer experience. Bromley Estates was launched in 2009 with customer service being paramount.
What would you say motivates
lawyers, and even getting the electric turned on, the team at Bromley Estates are there to offer as much or as little support as each client needs.
This approach has paid off. Not only has Bromley Estates been in profit every year since its inceptioneven throughout a recession, Brexit and Covid - but the company has an army of loyal clients, many of whom have since become lifelong friends.
Hayley said: “Our Google reviews give me goosebumps. They speak so highly about our team, saying how we have always gone above and beyond and even become friends.”
ny’s extraordinary success helping its clients, Bromley Estates is one of the few, if not the only agency on the Costa del Sol to operate as both a real estate agency and the exclusive commercialising agent for some of the top national developers, with high-end developments like Pure South, One 80 Residences, Acqua Gardens, Eden Resort & Club and Calanova Collection under its belt to name but a few.
It is also a member of the Leading Property Agents of Spain organisation, as part of its commitment to ensure all estate agencies work to meet the same rigorous standards of honesty and integrity for their
you?
Making a meaningful impact motivates me, growth and opportunity also motivates me. I’m a naturally inquisitive person, I believe there is always room for growth and improvement.
Do you have any female role models or role models in general?
I wasn’t much of a dreamer as a young girl, I was more about the experience than the aspiration, a realist who loved people and was a sponge for information. Before the narrative of the “empath” was discovered I honed in on my intuition and love for people, turning it into a lucrative asset.
When you’re on a journey, you often don’t see the path, you just keep walking forward naturally, hard work often didn’t feel like hard work, more part of my growth and process. If you view your job or career as just work, it can become mundane and tiresome. Work is part of my everyday life which I embrace and enjoy.
That’s a great outlook to have in life and in business. What do you enjoy most about running Bromley Estates?
Independence, I am fiercely independent and have been since being a young girl. Running your own business comes with risks but, ultimately, I think everyone would like the creative freedom and personal satisfaction.
What mistakes have you made along the way and what did you learn from them?
It was all a huge learning curve for me, my greatest challenge was the technological side of the business, which ironically is now my greatest strength. I Initially had to rely on a great deal of external help when it came to web design, SEO, SEM and PPC.
I became frustrated at my lack
of knowledge in this area, so embarked upon a 12-year learning journey and am now competent in the land of Google analytics and other platforms that are essential for today’s real estate business. That’s not to say tech is my favourite aspect of the job, it remains my least favourite. Master your weakness, ladies!
That’s great advice! Finally, what guidance would you give an aspiring young businesswoman?
Do something you love and are passionate about, instead of searching for success, look how you can contribute something meaningful. You have to be prepared to work hard, be consistent, driven, and organised. Having a strong moral compass is critical to creating a successful business with longevity.
Knickknack pieces
WITH an interesting career change after previously working in accounting, Odessa Hupsel-Mottershead and her family made the move to Spain earlier than planned, with the pandemic encouraging them to take the plunge and open Knickknacks. Dis cover individual ornaments and adornments that make a house a homefrom hand painted ceramics to beautiful blown glass.
Odessa said of opening Knickknacks: “I was born in the Netherlands and have lived there, as well as in Curacao, and now for the last two years in Spain.
“After around 25 years in accounting, I wanted to work full-time in my shop. We chose Spain because of the weather and experiencing a different way of life.”
Odessa has a passion for sourcing decorative pieces that are different but affordable and, after opening a successful online shop selling home decorations in 2016, she expanded to her physical shop in the Netherlands.
“It was tough but I had help from my daughter, my husband, and my mum to keep the shop open,” Odessa said.

Novel idea: The women bringing their imaginations to life
THEY say everyone has a book in them; but it’s not everyone who turns their dreams of literary success into reality.
Any search for Spanish women writers online is sure to return a slew of results. There could never be enough written in a single piece to list the achievements of Spanish women in literature.
Instead here is a selection of some of the brightest and best female authors. We begin in the 10th century with the poet Aisha. The writer was born Aisha bint Ahmad al- Qurtubiyya and although little is known about the details of her life, scholars believe she was born in Cordoba.
What is known is that Aisha came of age in a Spain ruled by the Muslim Moors, where traditional social values often
restricted how women could live and what they could do. The poet came from a back- ground of writers and philosophers.
She was able to break the mould set for her by society and went on to pen some great literature of the time. One of her most famous works is a poem about her turning down a marriage proposal.
Part of it reads: ‘I am a lioness, and will never allow my body, to be anyone’s resting place.’
Almost 1,000 years later in the 19th and 20th centuries Carmen de Burgos picked up the pen and continued with the Spanish female literary tradition. Burgos was born in Almeria to a middle class family and fled them before meeting her husband of 17 years Arturo Asterz Bustos.
The two were unhappi-
ly matched but Bustos’ involvement in the newspaper industry gave de Burgos an interest in working with words.
Soon after leaving her husband she wrote her first book. Her growing feminist convictions led her to write many works commenting on the position of women in society at the time.
Today one of the female writers helping to keep the Spanish female literary tradition alive is Angela Vallvey, 59. Vallvey was born in Ciudad Real and studied Modern His- tory at the University of Granada.
She published her first book, a children’s story, in the 1990’s before going on to write several critically-acclaimed novels. She has taken part in several radio and television shows as well as writing poetry.

The EWN’s ace team of fearless females
THEY say no (wo)man is an island and anyone who has ever run a team understands that it takes a mixture of talents, personalities and effort to achieve true greatness.
At the Euro Weekly News we’ve known this all along, and that’s why we are immensely proud to have a crack team of amazing women whose combined powers make the EWN a success.
Here we explore the women behind Spain’s largest English-speaking newspaper.
Michel Euesden: A pioneer in Spain’s newspaper industry, Michel has a drive, passion and commitment to success that is literally second to none.
A straight shooter, she has consistently defied expectations, first by becoming one of Spain’s only women at the helm of a major newspaper, and later by continually pushing and growing the Euro Weekly News to an extraordinary half a million readers a month across its seven printed editions.
Sally Underwood: Once a freelance writer for the Euro Weekly News living in the hills of Axarquia, Sally has grown in the company to become its editorial director. Supported by Michel, her journey from local reporter in 2016 to tak-
ing editorial control in 2022 has been one of the best experiences of her life.
Mo: A familiar, and much-loved name to many EWN clients, editorial manager Maureen Doninger has been working for the company for more than 13 years. With an eagle-eyed attention to detail, Maureen ensures that an incredible seven papers come together each week, seamlessly and with consistently high quality.
Alison: Office manager and saleswoman Alison Steele is a corner-
stone of the EWN’s commercial success. Ruthlessly efficient but with a genuine warmth that keeps her clients loyal for years, literally every office could be improved by an Alison.
Michelle Coy: Another member of our crack sales team is Michelle Coy, who has been with the company for more than 10 years. Known for her extremely high levels of customer service, Michelle always goes above and beyond for her clients on the Costa Blanca, ensuring consistent client care
throughout our footprint.
Linda Hall: Our longest-serving staffer, Linda Hall has been with the company an astonishing 27 years. An extraordinary woman who arrived in Spain in the 1960s, Linda is an expert on all things political and contributes her views via her weekly column.
Amalia: After arriving at the company 15 years ago without a word of English, it is fair to say that the Euro Weekly News now just wouldn’t be the same without its effervescent and extraordinarily talented financial director.
Vanesa: Some people are born rulebreakers while others love to follow the rules. The reason we love Vanesa is that she falls firmly into the latter category, ensuring our accounting and HR systems are followed to the letter and protecting the company in what can be a minefield of Spanish bureaucracy.
Lynn: Last but definitely not least is our head of recruitment, Lynn. A firecracker with a fantastic sense of humour and an infectious giggle, Lynn is the warm voice at the end of the phone to applicants looking to join the EWN’s ever-growing news empire.
Thank you ladies, from everyone at the EWN family!

Nordic heritage, inspired her to create interiors that fuse the two styles to create beautiful experiences for clients. She combines tropical elements with her Nordic heritage after spending three years living in Bali.
Ann’s mission is to create something new yet timeless, and her art form is about contemporary luxury. Before she
even puts pen to paper, she thinks a few decades ahead, ensuring that people will love her interiors for years to come. Her designs are a nod to elevated design and iconic silhouettes, but she applies a tropical-island element to the mix, making her interiors the interior for the house of tomorrow.

Innovation and sustainability at WoodFactory
RISTEL SCHOEMAN
, owner and creator of WoodFactory in San Pedro, has lived on the Costa since 2000 and had the innovative idea to bring beautiful scaffolding furniture to the south of Spain. These trendy lounge sofas, tables, chairs and other pieces have been seen across northern Europe for decades, and have also become increasingly popular on the ‘outdoor living’ Costa del Sol.
This unusual shop and factory is owned and run by mother of four Kristel Schoeman-Daneel, and is the first producer of high-quality wood furniture in the south of
Spain. Kristel said of the innovative furniture: “In the Netherlands, furniture made of recycled wood is very popular but, on the Costa del Sol, I found it impossible to source these trendy-looking and beautifully created sofas, tables, chairs and lounge sets.
“We thought that this was strange, since this type of furniture is perfect for the outdoor life we all love and enjoy in the south of Spain.” And so the idea for WoodFactory was born, no less just three months after Kristen had given birth to her fourth child.
The contemporary furniture at WoodFactory creates a feeling of Bohemian Chic. All of the
pieces are made using quality strong reclaimed wood that is made to measure - not only is this beneficial for the environment, but you can also be sure that you receive the exact product you desire.
With an eye for design, the company also offers a range of made to measure cushions and inlaid tiles to create that boho, dreamy, homogenous look.
Initially, the business was serving individual
customers in and around the Marbella area, it’s now grown and expanded to receive orders from along the entire coast of Spain. Kristen and her team has become involved in working with interior designers to furnish multiple bars and restaurants in beautiful and environmentally friendly wood.
WoodFactory can either supply from stock or can make products tailored to your requirements, offering a very versatile range for every room in the house as well as outdoors. This includes indoor and outdoor kitchens, bathroom furniture, beds, nightstands, headboards, tables, chairs, stools,
benches, sunbeds, sofas and stools, as well as accessories such as stunning mirrors, planters, desks, bread boards and chalk boards.
WoodFactory can also help you to create your dream spaces with projects that are tailored and made to measure to your needs and requirements.
Naturally, this busy entrepreneur can welcome customers in fluent Dutch, English and Spanish and can also manage a conversation in French or German.
The most common furniture sizes can be found in the shop, while made to measure pieces will be made solely for clients.
Radio star: TRE’s Hannah Murray talks celebrities, early starts, and 16 years at the top
SOME people are just born to connect with others, whether it’s through sharing information, entertaining, or even just being a good listener.
TRE’s Hannah Murray is most definitely one of those people, with a long-standing career spanning an impressive 16 years at one of Spain’s biggest radio stations.
Here, we talk to Hannah about how she got into radio, her career highlights, and what she does on her (very rare) down time.
Hannah explained: “I started working as a producer getting guests for Mary Harboe who was very known and loved for many years doing The Magazine Show. I really enjoyed the work and absolutely loved the idea that you could get literally anyone on the show.”
She went on: “Initially I then presented The Magazine Show for about five or six years and then the breakfast show for nine years. I’ve now been on the afternoon show for 1.5 years.”
Speaking about breakfast radio’s notoriously early starts though, Hannah told the EWN “I much prefer doing the afternoons and waking up naturallyI’m not an alarm clock person!”
While presenters are no stranger to interviewing the great and good, in her time at TRE Hannah has interviewed an astonishing more than 100,000 people. She told us why she loves finding out more about her guests.
“There’s some amazing people out there and everyone has a story to tell. I really enjoy speaking to people who are passionate about something.”
Talking about her favourite guests so far, she explained: “It’s great speaking to a really famous person. Doing the breakfast show I’ve had the chance to interview Lee Child and Jilly Cooper.
“But sometimes I love even more speaking to ordinary people who’ve done really amazing things. I’ve interviewed people who’ve been in wars and combat -
I’ve had people crying in the studio and some really emotional moments.”
So what does one of the Costa del Sol’s busiest women do for down time?
“For around 13 years now I’ve been hosting a weekly pub quiz at Hogan Stand in San Pedro, which I love. About five years ago my husband and I set up the San Pedro Guide, the only guide to San Pedro in English, so there’s a lot that keeps us busy.
“I’m in a choir as well, the Del Sol singers - we practise each week at Kat’s Kitchen near Estepona and do various performances throughout the year. I’m also an active member of the international Theatre Studio and I’m doing a monologue from Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads in April.”
You can listen to Hannah Murray on TRE in the afternoon from 4pm to 6pm Monday to Thursday, and The Book Show every Thursday 7pm, repeated on Saturdays at 8pm.
Interview WOODFACTORY was launched by long-term resident of Marbella, Kristel Schoeman-Daneel, with the goal of bringing the best of Dutch design and quality to the Costa del Sol using beautiful scaffolding wood.
Kristel Schoeman-Daneel of WoodFactory
over the 11 years you have been open?
We spoke with Kristel about how she has made WoodFactory so successful, what motivates her the most and her advice for budding businesswomen.
Hi Kristel! Have you always wanted to own your own business?
I have had my own business in the past and have always been and entrepreneur. It was when I was pregnant with my fourth child that I came up with the idea for WoodFactory and decided to create the business.
I made my business plan during pregnancy and started the business when my fourth child was only three months old - we have now been running for 11 years.
How has the company grown
When the shop first opened, it seemed to attract a lot of northern European clients who understood and liked the look, however, I am really happy to have noticed that more and more of my customers are Spanish.
Because of the success I have had with WoodFactory, I expanded my line to also include decorative accessories that accompany and compliment my lounge creations. You’ll find my designs all over the Costa del Sol now! We deliver custom work that is completely adapted to the clients’ requirements and many of the most popular bars and restaurants along the Costa del Sol have chosen to furnish their businesses with us.
What is the philosophy and inspiration behind WoodFactory?
I wanted to create a sense of Bohemian Chic with good quality strong furniture that lives - and that is certainly the case with
WoodFactory.
I regularly go to northern Europe to source the latest and most beautiful decorative items
to complement our furniture, and we also offer a range of made to measure cushions and inlaid tiles to ensure that ho -
mogenous look.
What inspires and motivates you?
My clients inspire me, I work with so many fantastic customers. I love creating beautiful spaces together by using wood and carefully selected items. No matter what the needs and requirements are, whether it’s indoor or outdoor furniture, designing large projects for businesses and premises or helping clients to choose unique pieces that compliment their furniture and colour palate, design and scaffolding wood is my passion. Do you have any advice for people wanting to start their own business?
If you want to start your own business make sure you have some ‘back-up’ money for at least a year and don’t do big investments in the beginning. If the idea/concept is good and you control the financial investment correctly it will work - so just go for it!!

How passion plus risk can equal millions
INSTANTLY recognisable, Cath Kidston’s eyecatching designs have become a familiar favourite on some of the world’s smartest highstreets.
But don’t let her cheerful patterns lull you into a false sense of security, under the girl next door look to Kidston’s business empire lies a razor sharp business mind that has built up an estimated £250 million company.
Influenced by her idyllic upbringing in the Hampshire countryside, Kidston says, “I’ve always been interested in houses and homes. From my earliest memories, I’ve liked re-arranging my room and was one of those children who was always restyling my bed- room.”
She adds, “I always loved to play shop, I loved
trading, drawing and doing all the stuff I love to do today.” The former shop assistant turned her passion into a business when she opened her first shop in Holland Park 1993, selling hand embroidered tea towels and shabby-chic furniture.
Her inspiration for selling products came after making an ironing board cover for her own flat. She explains, “I thought it would be the perfect product, because there I was, at home, doing my ironing on a grey ironing board. My flat was quite small and I had it hanging on the back of the door. I thought it was a really good idea.”
Subsidising her first venture, which she describes as a “glorified junk shop,” with interior design, Kidston decided to focus solely on selling her own
creations after surviving cancer at 37.
She explains the ordeal, “changed my attitude to risk within a business. It was a really positive turning point. It really helped me think, ‘I’m just going to make the most of it and get on’.” Her passion paid off and her designs are now sold in over 200 shops across 16 countries.
With an MBE for Services to Business to her name, Kidston, who has also raised large sums of money for cancer charities, has now sold the majority stake in her company. She says “having a business is a bit like having a child. As they grow up, you don’t want them to be too reliant on you, but you want to remain on very good terms with them.”
Spanish sisters
OVER the years, women from across the world have achieved some extraordinary things. But what about right here in Spain?
Here we look at what our most inspirational Spanish sisters in arms are achieving.
Now 62, Ana Patricia Botin, 57, has served as the executive chairman of Santander bank, bucking the global trend for top banking positions to be occupied by men.
The fourth member of her family to hold the position, in 2013
Botin was ranked the most powerful woman in the world by Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. Forbes al so named her the 8th most powerful woman in the world in 2017, 2019 and 202.
Another globally successful banker Maria Dolores Dancausa, 64, is the chief executive officer of Bankinter, holding the position since 2010. She led the bank in 2016 when the bank bagged record profits. She also made it into a gender-less list of the top 50 European directors by Forbes, following her results.
In the world of political philanthropy Paloma Escuedero, 57, is hard to beat. She is the
communications director of UNICEF, the United Nations’ children’s fund, managing the agency’s brand image and global communications. Before taking on her new role, she was UNICEF’S country director in Spain responsible for 180 projects and 800 volunteers.
Banking and politics are not the only male-dominated sectors however, with haute cuisine one of the toughest arenas to break into.
Hugely famous Spanish chef Carme Ruscadella, 70, did just that with a slew of Michelin stars to her name.
A master of ‘natural’ cooking, she has a restaurant in her hometown Sant Pol de Mar, near Barcelona, one in Barcelona city, and another in Tokyo. Combined, the three restaurants have seven Michelin stars, making them some of the world’s most decorated kitchens.
Queen Letizia, aged 50, was a successful journalist on Spain’s most important national channel before marrying King Felipe VI in 2004. She serves as special ambassador for the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Attention to detail
WHEN you are abroad - whether it is because you have a second home in Spain or you have relocated here - you will want to know that if anything happens you can deal with someone in English and with the highest level of attention to detail.
That is where Jennifer Cunningham Insurances SL can help.
Offering all types of insurance, from pets to homes to cars, Jennifer Cunningham Insurances SL provides specialised policies, all in English, and all aimed at your exact needs.
Both their Liberty Seguros and ASSSA policies have special divisions, created exclusively for expats’ needs. To support these policies, Jennifer has two very special, unique additions to her com -
pany, a dedicated Claims Administrator and a Renewals Department, which means you will be contacted every year to check your policy at renewal. Again, all in English and all with a personalised service. There is no such thing as an automatic renewal, where you can lose control.
Jennifer initially specialised in health insurance, on the Costa Blanca in 1992, but it was not long before she was asked to expand into general insurance. The company, still led by Jennifer Cunningham, has an extensive network of eight offices with an expert team who can tailor make the policy for you to suit all your needs and that of your family.
Jennifer’s philosophy is that of straightforward and honest advice, which is still instilled in all her staff members up and down the coast. Jennifer is
passionate about her team providing a professional quality of service to all her clients.
It is vital that the advice offered with regard to coverage is taken to ensure you are never under-insured, which offers you better protection should you have to make a claim. To be advised by an assessor that you are under-insured, will be the start of a nightmare.

surance, including cars, motorcycle, classic car, health, dental, comprehensive home, second home, public liability, commercial, landlord, funeral, travel, life insurance, pets, and marine policies, and Jennifer is very proud to be working with both Liberty Seguros and ASSSA to provide quality policies
Inspirational leader
THERE are some people in life who, as well as building their own success, do their utmost to help others along the way too. Jennifer Cunningham is one of those people.
A determined, passionate lady who keeps herself fit through healthy living and an inspiring enthusiasm for helping others, Jennifer’s story is a stirring one that relates courage, dedication and the incalculable benefits of a positive mental attitude.
Having moved to Spain in the late 1980s, Jennifer soon found herself alone with only a half-finished home and widow’s pension after her husband sadly passed away.
Many will recall the transformative moments in their lives when they stood, changed but unbroken, and found the strength to continue by channelling their love, rather than letting themselves become overcome by fear. And Jennifer began the long road towards developing her own life, and helping others along the way.
From humble beginnings working
from the simplicity of her own bedroom, Jennifer managed to apply her experience working in health insurance to eventually become a household name on the Costa Blanca, admired for her forthright attitude and prudent advice.
It certainly wasn’t an easy feat. At the beginning Jennifer wasn’t computer literate, which means that like many others she didn’t have a clue how to use the darned machines. Learning from scratch blessed her with a more empathetic understanding of the difficulties faced by her fellow expatriates in Spain however.
Jennifer initially specialised in providing health insurance locally on the Costa Blanca when she set out in 1992, but it was not long before she was asked to expand into general insurance. Her company, still led by Jennifer, now has an impressive network of eight offices with an expert team who can tailor make the policy for you to suit all needs.
Despite her astronomic success, Jennifer is still a hands-on Managing Director though and she keeps
herself and her staff aware of changes to Spanish insurance regulations and laws, keeping a steady hand at the helm of the company. She is also well-known and respected throughout by Spanish nationals and especially expats for offering excellent service.
This is because her company, Jen -
for her clients.
So if you are concerned about protecting your valuables, home or car and want great customer service in English, contact Jennifer Cunningham Insurances SL on 966 461 690 or for more information, visit www.jennifercun ningham.net.

It is even spreading further afield to cover all of Spain, including Malaga, Barcelona and Madrid.
More than simply a caring and successful businesswoman though, Jennifer is one of the many inspiring figures who quite simply make the Costa Blanca far better place to live.

From self-belief to self-made millionaire
LEARNING to back yourself really is a business success fundamental. After all, if you don’t believe in you, why should anyone else?
But if you need some inspiration on how self-belief and taking risk after risk can turn out for the best, look no further than UK favourite Emma Bridgewater.
Creating her business in 1985 with just £450 in savings, the now famous ceramics designer whose mugs and plates are sold in their millions across the UK, knew from a young age she wanted success. The problem was she didn’t know how she was going to do it.
Bridgewater, told one publication it was trying to find a birthday present for her mother Charlotte that sparked the idea for her hugely successful company. She says, “I was looking for a really special cup and saucer, but everything was either too formal or too clunky.”
Hugely ambitious, Emma had been looking for a business idea which could turn over a lot of money quickly. Having failed to find the right gift for her mum, she explains, “that was my eureka moment. I realised there was a gap in the market for pottery that was beautiful and practical.”
Creating a prototype at the Potteries in Staffordshire, Bridgewater started decorating her first mugs with sponge-applied designs. She began by selling the end product in Covent Garden, where buyers lapped up her informal designs, such as Toast & Marmalade.
After a few years happily married to Matthew Rice, now the company’s CEO, Emma says she put the business on a back-burner, just making enough to live.
When four children came along, however, she says she quickly had to earn more money, explaining, “I had to get back into the saddle or else the roof would have fallen in.”
A sad twist of fate increased her resolve even further when her mother suffered a brain injury after falling whilst
horse-riding in 1991. She says the sudden responsibility of caring for her mother, as well as her own young family, spurred her on, adding “unhappiness is a great driver.”
After several years building up the business, commuting miles each week between Stoke-on-Trent, London and Norfolk, Emma realised she needed to slow down when diagnosed with arthritis at 31.
She says she was advised to “take the stress out of my life” and decided to hand the company over to her husband, an experienced businessman who helped David Linley found his furniture company.
She says the transition was initially difficult, explaining, “it was hard to relinquish the reigns of my ‘business baby,’ but it was the right decision. I could focus on my health, my children, and the creative side of the business.” Her risk paid off and Matthew Rice has helped to increase the businesses productivity to 25,000 pieces of ceramics a week.
Now happily focusing on the design side of the business, Emma received a CBE in 2013 for Services to Industry and explains, “I design china to fit into your life, not to try to make your life more like mine.” She adds, “Emma Bridgewater is really every woman’s story.”
Stepping stone to greatness
AS children we are often taught that failure is bad. Doing badly in a school test often ends in some sort of punishment.
As a result, many of us enter adulthood thinking our failures are a negative, a sign we’re just not good enough at something, or a reason to be ashamed of our attempts.
But what if the reality was actually the opposite? What if it’s our failures that in fact give us the tools we need to achieve massive success?
Here we have rounded up a selection of household names who initially struggled to get where they are today.
Oprah Winfrey, the American talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist had a rocky start to life. She was brought up in a low-income family and says she was once sexually abused. She became pregnant at age 14, but lost the baby and went to live with her father.
OPRAH WINFREY: Explains that failure is part of the path to success.
She was fired from her first job on a local television station, but has since gone on to become one of the most popu- lar, influential and wealthiest women in media with television shows and even her own TV channel.
In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. Forbes state her net wealth as around $2.9 billion (€2.7 billion).
In her own words: “Failure is another stepping stone to greatness.”
J K Rowling, the woman behind the most famous wizard of all time, Harry Potter, has said she believed she was a failure before penning the novels.

mother suffering from depression and struggling to make ends meet when she wrote Harry Potter. In 1995 all major publishers rejected her book, but a year later Bloomsbury accepted it and in 1997, the book was published with only 1,000 copies.
Today, Harry Potter is a multi-million franchise with books, films and even a West End show and J K Rowling is now considered to be the most successful female author in the UK. Her net worth is said to be around $1.1 billion (€1.02 billion).
She said: “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you’ve failed by default.”
Together with her husband Jose, owner Pepa Morales Bravo created and evolved the business which is now the popular garden centre in Camino Viejo de Coin, Mijas. The Euro Weekly News spoke to Pepa about the business and what motivates her, she said: “I find my inspiration daily, always looking for ways to improve and eager to face all commitments - especially in times of crisis”.
The business opened in 1987 and has since been expending, with Pepa working hard on merchandising and personnel to make Viveros la Vega the well-known garden centre it is today. Pepa said: “My motivation is
With so many plant and flower species, a huge range of ceramics and decorations, plenty of ideas to create your own beautiful garden, and accessories for outdoor spaces, Pepa said what she enjoys most is recognising and seeing the beauty of nature. She also enjoys giving advice to customers. We asked Pepa what advice she has for budding businesswomen and how she has learnt from mistakes she made in the past: “Mistakes are part of life, and of business too, you just have to try to make as few as possible and deal with them.”
“The advice I would give is fundamentally the constancy in the work and in continuing with your business model - both in the good and bad moments of life.”

An interview with Dallal Oumharre: The face behind The Bardou Salon, Puerto Banus
AT The Bardou salon, owner Dallal Oumharre knows that hair and beauty is not only important but a reflection of us as people. Enhancing her clients’ natural beauty while matching their personality is something that Dallal is passionate about.
The Euro Weekly News spoke to Dallal about The Bardou, their services and what inspires her to make her clients feel amazing.
Hi Dallal! Tell us a bit about yourself and your background
I was born and raised in Amsterdam and I’m from an Arab background where hair and beauty is important. For me, how we look is a reflection of us and our vibe, and I think your hair represents you.
I’ve been passionate about hair since I was around 15 and I have been beauty obsessed ever since leaving school. Before I turned 15, I was always a tomboy and I still am in some ways. It was when I won Newcomer of the Year with the Coiffure Awards in Holland at the age of 19 that the real journey started.
So hair and beauty is definitely your pas sion! Why did you decide to open The Bardou?
I moved to Marbella when I was 24 and started a family when I was 26. Having spent my whole life in a salon and enjoying family life, I had a real isation one day that there had to be more than this. I decided to go for my dream and take over The Bardou Marbella, creating a space where clients can get anything and everything they need under one roof - A one-stop-shop for all beauty needs.
That sounds like a great place to work, tell us a bit more about the services at The Bardou

treatments. We also have inhouse experts in all beauty and aesthetics trades, which are exclusive to the salon. This includes make-up, nails, skin, body tightening, laser hair removal, botox, fillers, facials of all kinds and much, much more.
How do you feel about being a woman in business and what inspires and motivates you?
I believe men and women are the same in business but, of course, women rule!
Everything inspires me - daily life, different cultures, religion, fashion - I have a colourful imagination and I try and take the positives from every situation. Being authentic is to embrace those imperfections.
My main motivation is to lead by ex-
ample for my daughter. I want her to be inspired by me to do her best and be a strong and independent woman.
What advice do you have for aspiring female businesswomen?
Go with the choice that scares you the most because that’s what will help you to grow.
I feel like women can accomplish anything in this day and age. If we dig deep, we can do it - Managing salon life, a marriage, a family and everything else that goes on in this wild world. Dream BIG, be YOU and GO FOR IT. It can be hard to find balance but that is the key to life.
Also, nothing happens if you don’t make changes.
Where do you see yourself and The Bardou in 10 years?
Ten years it’s hard to say as so much changes so often in this life.
I am a big believer in living in the moment, developing myself and my business and continuing to grow. Tomorrow is not a promise and today wasn’t either, and I am grateful for every new day.
Momager: How to balance your work life with being a mother A is for assertiveness
BALANCING a career with your other crucial duties as a mother can seem like an impossible task. But today we’re sharing some tips to help you feel like a professional at juggling your responsibilities.
First and foremost, time management is essential to balancing your professional work and your family life. Many mothers who work find it useful to plan ahead to ensure that you give enough time to each of your responsibilities. This could mean setting aside designated family time each day, or it could mean taking a step back from work when your family needs you most.
Secondly, don't be afraid to delegate tasks. Many women can feel the pressure to take on everything at once. But it’s important to accept help sometimes, remember, you can’t do it all by yourself! Assign tasks to your partner or older children, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from your friends or family members, they will often be more than willing to help.
Another key strategy is to set boundaries. This
means learning to say “no” when necessary. This could mean not attending every single work function, responding to work emails during designated family time.
Learning to say “no” when necessary can help you avoid burnout from work and ensure that you have enough energy for
your family.
Next, make use of technology. We live in a digital age where we have access to a vast bank of helpful tools and apps. Technology can help you to feel more organised by offering you regular reminders for important events or tasks, or offering shared calendar apps
that you can coordinate with family or work colleagues to keep track of each other’s schedules.
Lastly, it is also crucial to take care of yourself and your own needs. In order to be the best version of yourself, it is important to have some time for self-care.
This means taking time for yourself to do things that you enjoy, whether it’s reading a book, going for a run, or spending some quality time with your partner, away from distractions. Taking care of yourself is not selfish, or mean that you are abandoning your responsibilities, it is necessary for your overall health and well-being.
Taking care of yourself can also mean setting realistic goals for yourself. Many working mothers find it useful to accept that they cannot be perfect, meaning that meals cannot always be homemade and the house will not always be spotless.
Balancing work life and responsibilities as a parent is no easy feat, but by following these tips, it is possible to manage both. You’ve got this, mums!
WE’VE all heard it said that where men are considered assertive, women are considered b**chy.
And while thankfully the dinosaurs behind that tired old stereotype are becoming less and less prevalent in the workplace, it is fair to say that assertiveness is something both men and women can struggle with.
Rather than the ability to dominate a conversation or win every argument, assertiveness is the subtle art of ensuring your own ideas, opinions, and boundaries are respected. And it isn’t always the easiest skill to learn.
Some have it naturally while others genuinely struggle to stand up for themselves in the face of aggression or unreasonable expectations.
If any of this feels like you, we are on hand to help.
Developing greater self-confidence means believing in yourself and your abilities to handle any situation. It involves learning to trust your instincts and having faith in your decisions. With greater self-confidence, you will be able to make decisions with conviction, stand up for yourself when needed, and take risks without fear of failure.
In this article, we will discuss five tips on how to start being assertive right away. We will look at how to stay focused on the facts, practise active listening, use body language effectively, speak up when you need to, and stay calm and composed during difficult conversations.
One: Stay focused on the facts when communicating with others. This will help keep the conversation from becoming too emotional or heated.
Two: Practise active listening (ie, actively taking in what others are saying rather than trying to work out counter arguments while they are still speaking) to ensure that everyone’s point of view is heard and understood.
Three: Use body language effectively by keeping an open posture and making eye contact when appropriate.
Four: Speak up when you need if someone else is dominating the conversation in order to make sure that your opinion is heard and respected.

Hi Emma! Tell us a bit about yourself
I have lived in Spain since 2007 and moved to join my parents who retired here in 2006 - And so my life in the sun began!
You’ve obviously achieved huge success in that time; how do you do it?
I have worked with Golden Leaves as the International Operations Director since 2015. Passion plays a huge part in my success and I am an avid believer in our product as I know how vital is it for the expat to have their affairs in order when living in a foreign country as we don’t always fully understand the system.
How did your journey working at Golden Leaves start and what inspires you?
I was asked to join the company in 2015. I had worked in the industry for a number of years beforehand and had a lot of experience, I discovered Golden Leaves was the number one provider of pre-paid plans in Spain. I believed in them along with their priority, focus on customer care, service, range of plans and payment options. Eight years later I still feel this way about Golden Leaves. I am proud to be a part of this groundbreaking company and proud to head up the international team. It is hugely important to love where you work; this is my inspiration to achieve the best every day.
What motivates you the most?
I am motivated and inspired by my team, our clients, the company and the products that we offer. Also knowing that we are in some small way helping that individual and their families at a very difficult time in their lives.
What do you enjoy most about your role at Golden Leaves?
Firstly helping a client, secondly seeing my team flourish, and seeing the business grow.
What mistakes have you made along the way and what advice would you, as a hugely successful woman, give to others about set backs?
I have made mistakes, it’s part and parcel of running a business as a woman in Span. I would tell people that as long as you can rectify those mistakes and learn from them, it’s all a part of self-growth and development.
What advice would you give an aspiring young businesswoman?
Make sure you have done your due diligence. Love the product, know the market, and know its demandsand needs. Understand and teach yourself the basics on the social platforms and market everything to the correct audience. Finally try to enjoy the choices you make creating your business and making it a success.

Meryl StreepBeware the time thief
IT’S a given that owning your own business is timeconsuming. Sometimes it can feel like there could literally never be enough hours in the day to achieve everything you want to get done.
But while we know that some amount of down time is vital to keep us performing our best, what it the most efficient way to use that time to your advantage?
Here we explore common time thieves that can easily monopolise the hours you dohave off, and how to avoid them.
The couch While at the end of a busy day or week the sofa may feel like the natural choice to come down a little, there are most efficient ways to bring your mind down from a million miles an hour.
A ‘a change of scene’ as they say, ‘is as good as a rest,’ and it is remarkable
how true this can be. Travelling even to a slightly different destination to your normal surroundings can help to reset the mind as much as a day zoning out in front of Netflix.
As an added benefit, expect new ideas to flow as the different perspective allows the mind to reflect on things.
The midnight emergency
What happened to the days of a good old-fashioned cup of hot milk and a bedtime story, eh? Perhaps our parents really did know best all along as it seems that increasing numbers of us are now checking devices, dealing with work, or watching high-drama TV right up to the moment we go to sleep. Endless research has found that quality sleep is one of the single biggest factors in cognitive function, yet we regularly ignore the sound sleep routines our parents set us up with and
choose to raise our adrenalin levels right before bed.
This is neither healthy, nor is it an efficient use of down time.
If you really can’t stomach the idea of a warm milk before bed (you are an adult, after all), why not go for the slightly more grown up angle of a good book, yoga, music (soothing, obviously), or a warm bath before bed?
Whatever you do, just make sure it’s something design to calm, not stimulate, your senses.
Procrastination The art of putting off to tomorrow what can be done today, procrastination is perhaps one of the biggest time thieves. To achieve the tasks in front of you and avoid putting them off, try one of the most forms of time management; time blocking.
Write out a task that needs completing, book out

Raquel Del Pozo of Costa Coches
OSTA COCHES is a budget car rental company in Mojacar that has been established for over 20 successful years, offering customers low prices all year round, a friendly and efficient service, and no hidden costs. The company also bought AA Parking, which provides safe, low-cost and efficient parking for Almeria and Alicante Airport, as well as preferential rates for Murcia Airport.
We spoke with Raquel Del Pozo, one of the businesswomen running the Mojacar office and ensuring a service that is second to none, about her role in Costa Coches and AA Parking, what motivates her, and her advice for aspiring businesswomen.
Hi Raquel, tell us a bit about yourself and your background I lived in London for four years to finish my studies and
start working there. I then moved back to Madrid, where I am originally from and was brought up, to work for an international company.
What was your journey to becoming such a big part of the businesses?
I moved to Mojacar in 2011 and had the opportunity to be hired by a hard-working woman, the CEO of Costa Coches and AA Parking, Stacy Reading. She taught me all the secrets to this business, which now helps me to efficiently run the company in her absence.
What would you say motivates you?
A good environment at work with a young dynamic team and continuity of the company
under any adversity. I also like that the main office is run by a team of competent women and find great satisfaction in this.
Do you have any female role models or role models in general?
Madam C J Walker is one of my role models. She was the first woman of colour to start a business and she made it succeed, which is really inspirational. What mistakes have you made along the way and how have you learnt from them?
I have done my best to make as few mistakes as possible as they could cause major problems for the company.
However, life makes you overcome obstacles and you learn from them at the same time. What do you enjoy most about running Costa Coches?
Dealing with customers face to face for so many years like we do at Costa Coches and AA Parking, you get to know them and their families and we end up becoming one big family. I have become very good friends with a lot of our clients and my colleagues, I like the team we have created because we all work together to reach the same goal and make out clients happy. What advice would you give an aspiring young businesswoman?
To have great enthusiasm, dedication, and motivation towards your co-workers and employees, because it isn’t always going to be easy, but with a bit of motivation we can get through it all.

And one of the recurring themes seems to be the importance of being able to step up and master a new skill when required. Whether that is getting to grips with a new technology or learning how to manage time efficiently, our education literally never ends.
But what’s the quickest way to master a new skill? Here are our tips below:
One: Identifying the Right Skill to Learn
With the ever-changing world of technology, it can be hard to keep up with the latest skills and trends. It can be difficult to identify which skill is right for you and your career.
This takes careful consideration of your interests, experience, and goals. Perhaps it’s not all social media platforms you need to learn more about and just one? Or maybe it’s SEO you want to be hotter on, not Google ads?
Refine and define what matters most to you in order to use your time most efficiently.
Two: Decide on your strategy
Learning is a continuous process, and it is important to have the right strategies and resources in place to ensure success-
ful outcomes.
This means considering the type of learning you need, ie videos, books, or seminars. Again, if you know how you learn best you can cut out of lot of unnecessary time exploring wasted avenues.
Three: Put aside time
Just as we studied particular subjects in blocks of time at school, mastering a new skill requires extensive study, work and practice.
By creating a practice schedule that includes practice drills and repetition, you can create the structure necessary for success. With the right plan in place, you will have the motivation to keep going even when things get tough.
Four: Network
Networking with experts in your field is an important part of staying up-to-date on the skill you are learning. By connecting with mentors, you can get the advice and feedback you need to stay motivated and on track.
Mentor networks provide a great way to tap into the experience of those who have already achieved success in your chosen field. Through these networks, you can find guidance on how to approach specific challenges or situations, as well as advice on how to make progress in your career.

Becoming an entrepreneur
ENTREPRENEURS are individuals who have the ability and ambition to launch and manage a company. Successful entrepreneurs recognise the dangers associated with launching a new business but understand there is no benefit without risk.
Entrepreneurs are visionaries who work relentlessly to bring their business ideas to fruition and reap the rewards. Excellent entrepreneurs have various important abilities and characteristics, including the following: Willing to take risks
Beginning a new business entails the chance of failure. However, great entrepreneurs are brave and willing to take chances and go all in.
A born leader
Entrepreneurs must recruit and lead a team of employees to develop an idea into a genuine and profitable business. Because the entrepreneur is the company’s owner and visionary, they must set the standards and guide staff to success. Good leadership skills are required for developing and managing a successful team.
Empathetic
Perhaps the least discussed value in today’s world is empathy or emotional intelligence. A competent entrepreneur should be aware of the strengths and shortcomings of each person in their team and recognise that these are the people who drive the business. Entrepreneurs must show empathy to their employees and re-
spect their personal and private lives.
Unhappy employees are not determined, and it is your responsibility as an entrepreneur to establish a working atmosphere where people want to come. An entrepreneur should endeavour to comprehend the circumstances of employees in order to care for their well-being.
Open-minded
In the business world, every situation might become an opportunity that your company can capitalise on. The most successful entrepreneurs avoid becoming overly committed to the services and items they now offer. An open-minded entrepreneur can assess market developments and modify the emphasis of their business to capitalise on a new opportunity.
Innovative
It takes a creative person to come up with new or improved ideas, establish a business, and make a profit. To prosper in the face of strong competition, entrepreneurs must generate and implement new ideas.
behind this?
I have always been good at helping people, in all aspects. Having experi -
when they find their forever home is so rewarding, I knew that this was something I wanted to do forever!
What would you say motivates you?
My family of course. However, I would say I also motivate myself a lot. I always try to improve every day and be the best version of myself.
Do you have any female role models or role models in general?
My mother because she has always and unconditionally supported me and my business.
What mistakes have you made along the way and how have you learnt from them?
My biggest mistake is being too trusting. I have learnt to be more selective with those I trust.
Yes, that’s good advice. And what do you enjoy most about running Next House Almeria?
enced first-hand what relocating to Spain is like, I feel I have a good understanding of how to support people through this journey. Also, seeing the smile on people’s faces

What advice would you give an aspiring young businesswoman?
To always be honest, kind and brave.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m Holly Underwood and for the last 16 years I have lived in Andalucia with my parents and elder brother. I came here when young and feel very privileged to have been brought up in such a beautiful part of Spain.
Apart from the scenery, beautiful weather, and the joy of village life, I love the importance of family. Our own family have always been close, and the influence of living in Spain has made us even closer. That closeness is a part of why we work so well together and suc cessfully in the family business.
What would you say motivates you?
That’s easy - helping people. Helping customers and them ap preciating that help is a wonderful feeling. I was schooled in Spain and enjoy being able to help people with the paperwork and language barrier.
We all take a lot of pride in reading and sharing our positive customer comments. That is most gratifying and since that ‘help’

sions that you make impact multiple aspects of the business.
Have you made any mistakes along the way that you have learnt from?
Mistakes are a key part of learning and improving. There are four important things I have learned:
1. Taking a little more time helps you to make better decisions.
2. Making a bad decision is far better than not making any decision.
3. When you get it wrong, own up, apologise, and then fix your own mistakes.
Sadly, most workplaces haven’t yet fully embraced having women in senior roles, whereas mum and I have an equal voice and are involved in all important business decisions. That may be easier in a family business, but thankfully it is changing elsewhere too and the years of a woman having to be better than a man is now no longer a prerequisite. If, you are good enough, your gender is irrelevant. Do you have any future plans for the business?
ethos is in all of us it’s probably why we have such high levels of repeat business and recommendations.
What do you enjoy most about working in a family business?
In other jobs I’ve enjoyed and
welcomed responsibility, but that was often accompanied by feeling that I was being managed. With the family business and us all having different responsibilities I’ve been empowered to make decisions. You quickly realise the deci-
4. Don’t make the same mistake again.
What advice would you give aspiring young businesswomen?
Be brave, believe in yourself and don’t accept or excuse inappropriate behaviour from others in your organisation.
Apart from continuing to deliver great service and continuing to grow, I would love it if our business was to achieve acknowledgement within the solar sector.
Recently, we were approached for recognition as one of the top five Solar Energy Service Providers in Spain. It’s early days, but if we do achieve an award, it would be testament to the hard
Style yourself like a boss
WHILE the 80s may be far behind us, power dressing in the workplace is definitely still a thing; for both men and women.
Power dressing is all about creating the perfect balance between style and sophistication. It’s about selecting pieces that are timeless and classic but also modern and edgy.
Wardrobe staples like blazers, tailored trousers, shirts and suits can be used to create a powerful look that will make you stand out in the workplace. Investing in quality pieces will ensure that your wardrobe remains timeless and professional for years to come.
And while the most important thing is always going to be wearing an outfit that is comfortable enough to do
your job successfully, there are still profes sional wardrobe staples that come in useful whether sitting behind a desk or presenting in front of hundreds.
Here we put together a roundup of those classic pieces that will come to gether for a polished look every time.
Blazers : Blazers have always been an essen tial part of professional dressing. Perfect for formal occasions and business meetings, they even look great as part of a casual look.
Go for the highest quality fabric you can find and find a cut that suits you. If nec -
essary, buy a size larger than needed and take to seamstress to adjust it to the perfect fit for you for a seriously sharp silhouette.
Suits : From skirt suits to trouser suits, a welltailored outfit has to be an essential in every business wardrobe.
Black is a timeless classic that never goes out of style while navy blue is more versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. If you really want to make a statement however, red or white are also classic choices which will help to make even more of an impression.
Heels : If men in business were expected to wear heels as part of their 12-hour day, there would be no
high heels anymore. Having said that, a really good heel can make you walk taller and feel unstoppable.
There’s no reason they have to cripple your feet however, so if stilettos really aren’t your thing consider block heels or wedges. They provide support for your feet while still giving you a polished look that is perfect for the office or any other professional setting.
Statement shirt : Sometimes we want to blend in within a professional setting and sometimes we really want to make an impact. That’s where the statement shirt comes in. Fitted to perfection, the ideal statement shirt comes in a bold colour or pattern but in a silk or chiffon for a slightly undone look.
work we all do.HOLLY UNDERWOOD: Don’t make the same mistake twice.
SAM and Holly Underwood, as a mother and daughter working together may not be that uncommon. What may surprise you is that Sam and Holly work in the Renewable Energy Sector. Traditionally the Renewable Sector was viewed as male centric though in that regard Ecocorp Solar is completely different. Almost 40 per cent of the total staff is female - gender has not and never will be a barrier. Holding senior responsibilities within this high growth, successful family business is why we approached Sam and Holly to feature in ‘Women in Business’. That two women, from different generations, sit right at the very heart of the business and are involved in all of the important decisions is a testimony to Sam and Holly themselves, but also emphasises the core values and beliefs of the business - honesty, respect and inclusiveness.ANNA WINTOUR: Is the ultimate power dresser.
Sam Underwood, Ecocorp
Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m Sam Underwood, everyone would say that I am a ‘mum’, and I take this as a compliment. I’m blessed to have married the man I fell in love with 41 years ago, we have two wonderful children - Daniel and Holly. Soon, I will become a grandmother for the first time, and I am sure that it will be a different and very special type of love.
We’ve lived in Spain for 16 years and, despite both children having partners and their own homes, we all still live in the same hilltop village. Togetherness and family is what I love most about our life here.
Have you always been involved in the family business?
I was initially involved out of necessity. As the business grew it was only natural to use my existing office skills to assist with the administration. That helped the men focus on growing the business and making sure customers were happy. It’s now a full-time role for me.
What would you say motivates you?
Family is my greatest motiva-
tion, seeing them working together fills me with pride. Seeing my son mature is a gift, and it’s won-
derful to see him come out from under his father’s shoulders and work toward becoming his equal.
Holly and I act more like sisters. When Holly joined the business she was already mature beyond her years. Seeing any strong willed, spirited, and intelligent woman is always inspiring in a workplace and when it’s your only daughter it can’t get much better.
As a team, when it gets tough nobody complains or moans. We roll up our sleeves, discuss what needs doing and agree a plan. Recently, one of our newer senior employees said it was the best place she had ever worked as everyone is always so happy. That’s such a compliment and reinforces what a special environment we work in.
Have you made any mistakes along the way that you have learnt from?
When you get to my age in life it would be crazy to say anything other than yes and yes. Mistakes happen, it’s how you deal with
correcting them that is key. We do not always get it right, but we will always work with our clients and strive to meet, and hopefully exceed their expectations.
I have learned that my voice and my thoughts are important within the business. There are a lot of strong personalities in my family, but working together has made me appreciate that we have shared values.
What future plans do you have for the business?
Our future is in so many ways wholly dependent on continuing to do the good work that we do and have learned to do over many years. From experience, we know that if we do our bit and the customer is treated properly, honestly, and fairly, they in truth will then determine the future of our business.
Most of our work is recommended, based on staggeringly high levels of customer satisfaction. If we continue to do that then the company will continue to flourish.

Mojacar Estates: All with a personal touch ALMERIA, THE PERFECT WEDDING DESTINATION
OK, so it’s time to put Almeria on the map as a Destination Wedding Location! It’s true, Almeria is one of Andalucia’s hidden gems! Did you know that Almeria Costa was voted by the Guardian as being in the ‘top 20’ in the world for the good life? No… well you do now!
Hi, I’m Sally Chapman, alternatively known as Celebrant Sally Spain. As an experienced Celebrant I have travelled all along the coast of southern Spain and beyond officiating wedding ceremonies and despite seeing some beautiful parts of the country and some stunning venues, I have often wondered why more couples don’t consider Almeria when planning their wedding.
This may come as a bit of a surprise to you, but Almeria has been kept a bit of a secret and few people will know that it’s often referred to as the ‘Jewel in The Crown’ of southern Spain. In the last couple of years however, it’s become more familiar for those who watch the popular Channel 4 TV series of
Sun, Sea & Selling Houses, fronted up by the now familiar ‘Garner’ Family.
What Makes Almeria Stand Out as a Wedding Destination?
When thinking of a destination wedding location however, Almeria might not be a place that springs to mind, but because of the diversity it gives you a great opportunity to find that somewhere special that may be a bit off the beaten track, but also that hidden gem that isn’t knocking out hundreds of weddings each year.
With the added advantage of having an international airport on its doorstep makes it an easy wedding destination to travel to.
A semi-arid province of mountains and valleys, including the desert of Almeria, a virtually unspoilt coastline and several natural parks makes it a perfect place to find your ideal wedding venue. Its villages and towns offer Spanish properties in locations as diverse as the landscapes, mountain village retreats, rural valley hide -
aways and beach side fishing villages, and to boot it is the driest region in Europe boasting an average of 342 hours of pure sunshine.
Where Is the Best Place to Have a Wedding Ceremony in Almeria?
The beauty of using a Celebrant to officiate your wedding ceremony is that your choices are endless as to where you can hold your wedding ceremony. As it is a nonlegal ceremony (ie; you would have contracted your legal marriage at a registry office prior to coming out to Spain) this means there are very few restrictions as to where you can have your wedding ceremony or blessing depending on your budget and preference.
The Stunning Cabo de Gata Natural Park
The most favourite area of mine in Almeria has to be the beautiful Cabo de Gata - Nijar Natural Park which is one of the few protected areas in Europe full of beautiful landscapes which boasts incredible scenery.
on market trends and laws, giving you the peace of mind that everything is taken care of and above board. Karin said: “The housing market in Almeria has changed a lot over the years and we have been a part of that. We help many international clients and, while the market used to be made up mostly of British nationals, we are seeing a lot more people coming over from Belgium and Germany.
“The cost of living and energy prices have also had an impact on the property market here. And we are seeing more people relocating here for work - I would say it’s now 50 per cent working professionals and 50 per cent holiday home purchases,” she added.
With an exciting future ahead and Karin’s son gradually taking over Mojacar Estates, the closeknit team welcome you to join their family of clients and let them take care of the stressful aspects of buying or selling your property.
Interview FAMILY-run estate agency that has been growing and thriving since Director Karin Schröter took over in 2002, Mojacar Estates is dedicated to matching the right home to the right buyer.
A Karin Schröter: The female behind the force
Originally from Germany, we spoke with Karin about what it’s like running Mojacar Estates, what motivates her, and her plans for the future of the business.
Hi Karin! Tell us a bit about yourself and the Mojacar Estates
I had my first holiday home in Spain in 1986, which I bought through Mojacar Estates, and I used to own an engineering company in Germany. We moved to Mojacar permanently in 1997 where I worked at Mojacar Estates.
In 2002, the owner was retiring and approached me about taking over. I already knew the team and had plenty of experience in the property market, so I made the decision to take over. It was a bit of a risk, and moving to Mojacar was what I call a ‘lucky coincidence’, I now love living here and it was definitely the right decision. Mojacar is a town that still feels very Spanish and authentic.
What do you enjoy most about working in the property market at Mojacar Estates and owning the business?
I like a challenge and getting to know people, finding out their requirements and then matching them to their perfect property. We work with people from many different nationalities - English, German, Dutch, French and more - and they all have a different mindset and mentality.
A good example of this was during the Covid pandemic, different nationalities had different priorities, where the French were hoarding wine the English were hoarding toilet paper! Sometimes you need to read body language to deci-
pher how clients truly feel about a property. Because we use a personal approach, we really get to know the client and how they think, how they communicate and what their expectations are – I love the challenge of working with their needs to find a property that they fall in love with.
What would you say
Every day is very different and I wear a lot of hats. I used to be on the ground meeting clients at properties, but now I work on more of the admin-side of the business, speaking with clients and dealing with sales.
What advice would you give to an aspiring businesswoman?
Firstly, after working in a man’s world for 15 years in the engineering field, I saw a lot of collaboration between men and women. Once you prove yourself, you have the respect no matter what your gender is and there shouldn’t be any discrimination.
I think you have to be open to different things and different ways of thinking, as well as learning languages because this is a huge plus when working in an international sector. You will need to throw your habits away and learn how to become flexible - every time we think we have seen it all at Mojacar Estates, something comes up that we haven’t come across and need to figure out how to deal with. The housing market is constantly changing along with the needs of clients, so being flexible is a big advantage.
Trust, openness and loyalty are the things I think are most important when running your own business.
And what are your future plans for Mojacar Estates?
My son joined the business two years ago and I am preparing for him to take over what has been built over the past 25 years. Because the team has been working together since the beginning, we are all like a close family, so my plans are to gradually become less visible within the business while my son is training and learning so that I can pass it on to the next generation. I am looking forward to seeing what Mojacar Estates becomes!

Business’ leading ladies: Female entrepreneurs who transformed their industries
THROUGHOUT history, women have faced significant barriers when it comes to achieving success in the business world. However, despite these obstacles, there have been many trailblazing female business leaders who have shattered glass ceilings and transformed their industries.
One such example is Allyson Felix, an American athletics star who has achieved remarkable success over the course of her career. Felix has won nine Olympic medals, making her the most decorated American woman in Olympic athletics history. She has also won 13 world championship titles and set multiple records in various events.
Off the track, Felix has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights and gender equality in sports, speaking out against issues such as unequal pay and lack of maternity protections for athletes. She has also launched her own shoe line, SAYSH, which she developed while pregnant to create suitable athletic footwear for women.
Amancio Ortega, the founder of Spanish fashion retailer Zara, is a
household name within the fashion industry. However, few people know that the real brains behind the global brand’s success is his former wife, Rosalía Mera. Mera was one of the co-founders of the fashion brand and played an instrumental role in the company’s growth. She was responsible for Zara’s supply chain and logistics, which allowed the company to rapidly expand its reach across the globe.
Mera was also a philanthropist, founding the Paideia Galiza Foundation, which supports education and cultural initiatives in Galicia and continues to do so in her memory after she passed away in 2013.
Mary Barra, the CEO of General Motors is another woman who has transformed her industry. Barra is the first female CEO of a major vehicle company, and she has led GM through a period of significant change and transformation. Under her leadership, GM has shifted its focus toward electric and driverless vehicles, and made significant investments in new
technologies such as 3D printing and artificial intelligence.
Another female business leader who took her industry by storm is Anne Boden, a Welsh en trepreneur and banker. Boden is the founder and CEO of Starling Bank, a mobile-only bank based in the UK. As a woman in the male-dominated financial industry, Boden faced many challenges when starting her own business in 2017, but she per severed and has since become a vocal advocate for digital banking and innovation in financial ser vices. Her leadership and contri butions to business have since been recognised with numerous awards.
Looking towards the future, it is clear that there will be many more women who follow in these in credible women’s footsteps, paving the way for a more inclu sive and diverse business world.
helping it. “The sustainable forests we get our resources from are some of the best managed in the world, where reforestation and environmental considerations are given high priority. The trees used are usually Scots or Corsican Pine, though can sometimes be redwood or Siberian larch.”
All of their timber can be resawn and or planed to suit a client’s requirements. Wood2Go also offer free and friendly advice on all projects, so if you are planning anything such as a Porch, Pergola, Carport, Shed or material for DIY projects, you need to go to Wood2Go.
Interview T Wood2Go Sarah knows that the timber industry is not just for men but for women too! The Euro Weekly News spoke to Sarah about Wood2Go, their service and what inspires her.
An interview with Sarah Irving of Wood2Go
AHi Sarah! Tell us about yourself and background
We moved our family kit and caboodle to Spain 17 years ago to start our next chapter. We were lucky in a way that Paul’s parents had already made the move to Spain and were able to guide us in every way from housing and gaining residency.
Our first task when arriving in the Los Vele z area in May was to get our two children registered into school. It was a tedious process but we got there in the end.
It was very daunting taking them to school as my Spanish was very limited but three lovely English Mums and one Spanish Mum came to my rescue and that was the start of a very important support group of friends that saw me through having my third child in Spain. Going through our Son having a brain tumour at age 10 and all that involved and various other bumps in the road.
What service or product do you offer?
We are a family-run wood businesswe sell laminated timber for DIY projects as well as making and installing our own Pergolas, Carports, Sheds, Porches etc.
Have you always wanted to run your own business?
My husband Paul left school at 16 and was the Manager of the Family Run Sawmill back in the UK and we
made the decision to move to Spain for his health in 2006 and decided to start our own business.
What is the background behind Wood2Go?
The business was started in May 2006. My background has been sales and administration and Paul’s is timber. Have you come across any indifferences?
Yes, in some respects I have found if you have to deal with a Spanish-run company, depending on what it is, you will get more assistance from them dealing male to male, but on the whole most of the Spanish (either in business or as clients) are happy to deal with me or my Daughter.
What motivates and inspires you?
My family motivates me and looking towards the future for them.
Do you have any advice for people wanting to start their own business?
Look into all aspects involved in starting a business (and this applies to wherever you are) before you make the leap.
The most important thing is to establish yourself when you come to Spain, get involved in any way you can with what’s going on around you. My Spanish is still pretty basic but I have three inbuilt translators that will correct me and help when needed. My eldest daughter is now involved in the business and this has expanded things more for us.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully retired and our Daughter and Son-in-Law will be running the business.

An interview with Catherine Rae
WE spoke with Catherine Rae, one of the inspirational women behind Almeria Holidays. Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m 24 and we moved to Spain when I was five - Me, my two brothers, my mum and my dad. My dad, George, is from Scotland and my mum is half African and half Scottish. My parents met in London and had me and my brothers before moving to Spain.
They were looking for a safer and more peaceful life than living in London and I think my dad was looking for a bit of down time when we first moved, my mum had other plans and wanted to buy the business!
It sounds like your parents are motivated by the business too, and your mum is somewhat of a ‘girl boss’ herself!
Yes she saw the business was for sale and was determined to buy it - so we did! Since then, my dad has worked really hard to build up our great reputation. I’ve watched the company grow and seen how business works, which gave me the passion to want to join the company.
I worked for Almeria Holidays to earn money and then took a gap year travelling and gaining some life experience,
which I think also proved to myself that I have the skills and confidence to get involved in everything in the business. I went backpacking across Europe, which takes a lot of planning and forces you into unfamil iar situations, this taught me so much and when I finished I was real ly looking for ward to get ting involved in Almeria Holidays. real estate course during Covid and learnt a lot dur ing
that time, when we were back in the office I put everything I had learnt into practice.
What would you say motivates and in-
I’m lucky to have many people in my life that inspire me. My parents inspire and motivate me, my mum is a really strong woman and my dad is amazing at what he does. My brothers are really business-minded too. One of my brothers lives in London and has his own business and my other brother is setting up a bar in Spain. My colleague in the office, Sandra, is amazing with organisation and I really admire this. We both like everything to be very organised so she is a great lady to have around!
My boyfriend’s work ethic also really inspires and motivates me, and my best friend is a very focused and inspirational woman.
CATHERINE: Enjoys everything about the business.
What do you enjoy most about running the business?
I honestly enjoy everything about the business! I have amazing relationships with clients and love making them happy. I dabble in all areas of Almeria Holidays including the website, social media, meeting clients, and managing the office. Every day is different.
Because we are a family-run business, I’m more invested in doing things right. Although I would always care about the clients if this wasn’t my family’s company, seeing the business grow and the returning clients means I am much more passionate.
What mistakes have you made along the way and what did you learn from them?
I made some mistakes when I first went into helping run the business, I think the most important thing is I learnt from them. I took over answering the phones, because I speak fluent Spanish, and that forced me to think on my feet. Any mistakes I have made I have remembered so that I don’t repeat them!
My dad also taught me how to deal with different situations that cropped up. Our approach is calm, organised and about listening to the client.

Businesswomen that overcame challenges during the pandemic Stacey Dooley MBE: Uncovering the truth
THE Coronavirus pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for businesses across the globe. Female business owners, in particular, have faced significant difficulties in navigating the economic fallout of the pandemic.
However, many inspiring stories have emerged of women who have found ways to innovate, pivot, and thrive in the face of adversity. Today, we’re taking a closer look at real-life case studies of female business owners who have overcome the pandemic.
In the UK, Karen Hauer, a professional dancer and choreographer on Strictly Come Dancing, owns and runs a dance and fitness studio called Hauer Power. When the pandemic hit, Hauer was forced to close and cancel all in-person classes. She adapted to the circumstances by creating a virtual dance and fitness class programme, which attracted huge numbers. She also offered private lessons via video chat, which allowed her to retain many of her regular clients. Hauer’s ability to adapt to the changing situation and offer innovative solutions enabled her to keep her business afloat despite the hardships of the pandemic. Meanwhile, in the clothing industry, businesses were affected by the clo-
sure of in-person shops. Cécile Reinaud is the founder and CEO of Séraphine, a maternity wear brand worn by celebrities including Kate Middleton. She responded by launching a virtual styling service and ramping up her online presence. The businesswoman also donated a portion of her sales to Covid-19 relief efforts. These initiatives helped her business weather the storm and even grow during the pandemic.
The hospitality industry was also
hit hard by forced closures during the pandemic, which put a stop to business owners’ crucial income flow.
In Spain, the CEO and co-founder of Huevos Revueltos food company, Amancay Tapia quickly realised that she needed to adapt her business model. Tapia realised that her business which specialises in healthy and organic meals was still popular, but she needed to change to adapt to the situation. She changed her business strategy to focus principally on home delivery and launched an online marketplace, which allowed her to expand her products on offer.
The initiatives helped her business grow during the pandemic, despite the difficulties for the traditional hospitality industry.
These innovative businesswomen demonstrated the resilience, innovation, and determination needed to overcome the unique challenges of the pandemic. By changing their business strategy, expanding their product catalogues, and giving back to their communities, they were able to thrive in a tough environment and will inspire generations of women for years to come.

Star Duo: Black Flame’s Heidi & Sam
ANYONE who lives in the Pedreguer area will know Black Flame, the hugely popular restaurant and carvery owned and run by Heidi Jungreuthmayer and wife Sam Lewins. But what makes the pair so successful? And what advice would they give to anyone else opening a business? Here, the Euro Weekly News finds out more about the women behind the success.
Starting out working at her father’s own carvery, Monroes in Moraira, 30 years ago, Heidi knew she loved hospitality. This hugely driven woman was never going to be content to simply work in the family business however, and instead used her knowledge and experience to set about setting up her own business empire.
After buying the Pedreguer site around 15 years ago, it was when Heidi met her now wife Sam, also with a huge background in hospitality, that the
pair really came into their own. They became a powerful team that would rebrand entirely and set about to create their vision for exactly how a great restau rant should operate.
It is this strong partnership and the couple’s constant drive for improvement and growth that has resulted in one of the Costa Blanca’s best-known (and loved) restaurants. And these qualities also mean the pair never stop innovating.
Already offering a huge vari ety of British classics from steak and ale pie to fish and chips, and BBQ food like juicy rack of ribs and classic burg ers, once Heidi and Sam no ticed that many of the restau rants in Spain lack a substantial choice of vegetables, they knew it was time to innovate again; this time with their famous carvery.
The result is Flame’s all new and improved carvery dinner which gives diners a choice of
crispy roast potatoes and homemade Yorkshire puddings - all with unlimited vegetables.
The Euro Weekly News asked the pair about how they maintain this passion for constant improvement. Heidi told us:
er, we like to think up new ideas and try them out.”
But has it always all been plain sailing for the successful businesswomen? Heidi tells the EWN mistakes are part of the process and that she and
Sam are no different.
“Everyone makes mistakes along the way and we are no different, but there’s nothing that hasn’t been easily rectified. We believe everyone has to make their own mistakes with their business, and each profession and location is different.”
And with so much experience behind them, what advice do they have for aspiring business owners?
“The benefits of owning a business are making money and choosing your own hours, but you also have the responsibility to deal with everything when things are bad.
“So I would say to think about it carefully before you start a business and be prepared to work hard, because you get what you work for,” says Heidi.
Heidi and Sam welcome you to Black Flame to try their renowned English carvery and variety of a la carte dishes.

An interview with Beata Maria Kramoris
Hi Beata - tell us a bit about yourself and Blue Diamond Colageno
My name is Beata and I am 52 years young. I’ve owned a few different busi nesses and spent time living in Tenerife and Poland before moving to Spain.
I’ve been using Colway products for over 10 years and my business aims to provide customers with Colway’s excep tional quality natural collagen products that are sourced from fish skin, using their patented method.
Have you always wanted to run your own business and what brings you to Spain?
I’ve always wanted to have my own business, I’ve had a few businesses in my life. I worked as an insurance agent, I had a small supermarket, and my own travel agency. I finished working in in surance to open my supermarket, which was doing really well until big supermar kets came into the area.
A friend who had been in Spain for a long time persuaded me to go there with her. We went to Malaga where I met my current partner who is English, he lived in Tenerife and we opened a travel agency there. I’m a brave person who isn’t afraid to take risks, so the business went in my name and I took
care of the responsibilities. Unfortunately, Covid hit and we had to close the agency, we moved to Poland during the pandemic where we bought a house in beautiful Krakow. However, it was too cold there so we decided to move back to sunny Spain!
We bought a house in Murla in March
2022 and the idea for opening Blue Diamond Colegano was born whilst visiting the hairdresser.
Once again, my hairdresser praised my hair - what good structure it has and how shiny it is. She asked what shampoo I use and I had been using Colway’s hair thickening shampoo, this was the reason for my strong and healthy hair.
Why did you start Blue Diamond Colegano?
About 10 years ago I had lots of pain when moving and different doctors told me there was nothing wrong. That’s when I found Colway. I didn’t know who they were but they advertised collagen that can be applied to painful parts of the body. I ordered the best collagen from them, their Natural Platinum, and I started rubbing it onto
the aching parts of my body - I noticed the improvement immediately.
Using this with another collagen drink I had discovered, I was able to overcome my every day pain. Doctors later diagnosed me with the incurable joint disease fibromyalgia (Lady Gaga also has this).
Colway products are helping me with my illness, because my fibromyalgia also affects connective tissue due to lack of collagen and central nervous system transmitters. That’s why I have decided to share my experience and distribute these products in Spain, because they are not only cosmetics, but medicines for many things.
Do you have any advice for aspiring businesswomen?
Don’t be afraid to invest and believe in yourself. It’s always good to take on new challenges and, when you do, keep a smile on your face and be confident.
Learning languages is another piece of advice I have, as well as taking care of how you look and feel.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Happy, very successful and running a large company.

If you are really serious about ac tively improving your health while at the office, you could consider chang ing your chair for an exercise ball. Fans claim the practice will improve posture, stability and core muscles.
Take advantage
If your office has a gym on-site or one nearby, why not sign up and take part in a lunchtime yoga class? Ben efits are said to include increased flexibility, strength and energy levels, and stepping out of the office for 45 minutes will certainly help to clear your mind. If you have a bike, you could also try going for a quick cycle in your break and achieve the same benefits.
Create the right evening environment
Finally, at the end of your day, try to create the right environment to
of excellent service when selling through Starck-Estates. Selling a property is a matter of trust, and it is important that you are guided by a competent and transparent estate agency who has your best interests at heart.
The agents will carry out an honest evaluation of your property, create the marketing materials such as images and advertising descriptions, support you with legal and tax advice, in addition to securing sales negotiations. There is no better agency on the Costa Blanca to get your property
in front of the right potential buyers.

Michelle Obama: A global icon for women’s empowerment
IT is not possible to talk about International Women’s Day without mentioning Michelle Obama. The former First Lady of the USA is one of the most inspiring women of our time. She has dedicated her life to making a positive impact on the world, and her story is a testament to the power of determination, hard work, and perseverance.
Michelle Obama was born as Michelle Robinson in Chicago in 1964, into a working class family. There, her parents instilled in her the value of education and hard work, and she excelled in school. She went on to attend Princeton University, where she majored in Sociology and African-American Studies, before taking up a place at Harvard Law School, where she earned her Law degree.
After completing her studies at Harvard Law School, Michelle Obama began working at a prestigious law firm, where she crossed paths with Barack Obama, who was then a summer associate. The two fell in love, got married, and started a family with their two
daughters, Malia and Sasha.
When Barack announced his candidacy for President in 2008, Michelle became an integral part of his campaign, giving powerful speeches and connecting with voters across the country. As First Lady, she continued to make a difference in the lives of people around the world by launching initiatives to promote healthy living, support military families, and empower girls to pursue their dreams in education and leadership.
Michelle's unwavering commitment to creating positive change has earned her the admiration and respect of people from all walks of life, regardless of their nationality or cultural background. Her message of hope resonates with people across the globe.
However, Michelle’s greatest impact may lie in her message of hope and resilience. She has openly shared her own struggles with self-doubt and imposter syndrome, inspiring countless others to overcome their own challenges and pursue their passions. Through her actions and words,
Michelle has become a global in spiration for women and girls ev erywhere, reminding us that we all have the power to create posi tive change in the world.
Michelle Obama’s impact ex tends far beyond the United States, as she has become a beloved global icon, admired and respected for her intelli gence, grace, and compas sion. Her story serves as a shining beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding women everywhere that anything is possible with a commitment to make a change.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day and honour the achievements of women worldwide, Michelle Obama’s story can provide hope and inspiration for the next generation of women.

I have a huge range of clients, from young mums to be and post-natal mothers, people who are extremely fearful about public speaking, and those with nerves holding them back in work and life. Under hypnosis, clients tap into their inner child which allows us to change their perspective, perceived threats and perceptions.”
On being a female business owner in Spain, Isolina said: “There is a freedom in Spain to be able to be yourself. Lots of people are put off by the paperwork and legislation, but as long as you have a good gestoria and familiarise yourself with the processes, setting up a business in Spain gives you a lot of freedom and is fairly simple to do.”

IT shouldn’t just be our job to straighten each other’s crowns. For years male-driven businesses have benefited from all kinds of government funding and backing to support them.
Now, the European Commission has put together a rafts of resources, from networking to funding.
Here are the top resources that may help your business when you need it most.
WEgate
To help women create and run successful companies, the European Commission launched the Europe-wide online platform WEgate, continuing to support women entrepreneurs during the Covid-19 pandemic.
WEgate unites all initiatives supporting women entrepreneurship into one platform dedicated to women entrepreneurs and their needs related to starting, financing, and managing their businesses. The intention is to create a hub for connecting women entrepreneurs with support organisations at local, regional, national and European level, facilitating their access to mentoring and business networks across Europe.
EEN for women
The Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) has a dedicated group of experts working on women’s entrepreneurship that gathers numerous partner organisations in multiple countries in Europe and beyond. The group
connects women entrepreneurs to the network’s business and innovation support activities and provides concrete services, such as business partnering, access to foreign markets, cooperation with local networks, as well as access to EU funding.
Business angels
The European Commission is also working to encourage the emergence of more women business angels in the EU and increase access to alternative sources of funding, by setting up a European community of women business angels and women entrepreneurs. Four pilot projects covering 14 EU countries ran until mid 2019 and achieved their goal of raising awareness of business angels, training women who wanted to become business angels and helping women entrepreneurs to present their business ideas to potential investors.
These projects also helped women business angels to join ‘mainstream’ business angels networks, enabling them to reach a critical mass, better share risk and have more business opportunities.
Other finance opportunities
Finally, the Commission is launching a gender-smart finance initiative under the InvestEU programme, to stimulate funding for female-led companies and funds. For more information on any of the initia-
OUR special is packed with examples of women already at the top of their game. But what if you are just starting out?
One of the fundamentals of starting any new busi ness is putting togeth er a business plan. But if you’ve never done one before this can be fairly daunting (afterall while Pythagorean theory seems to considered an essential school subject, basic life skills often get left out of the curriculum).
Here are our top tips.
Market research
Market research is a crit ical first step to creating an effective business plan. Without proper market research, it can be difficult to understand the needs of your target audience and how to differentiate yourself from your competitors.
Conducting thorough market research helps you understand the current landscape of the industry you are entering, as well as the preferences and behaviors of your target audience. It also allows you to identify potential opportunities for growth and gain insight into areas where you may need to focus more attention or re -

break a business. It is the first impression that investors get of your company, and it is essential to get it right.
The key to success lies in producing an effective pitch deck and presentation that will capture the attention of potential investors. This involves understanding the audience, creating an engaging narrative, and using the right visuals to communicate your message.

sources in order to succeed.
Identifying Your Unique Selling Proposition
A unique selling proposition (USP) is the key to unlocking a successful competitive advantage strategy. It is an essential element of any business plan and can be the difference between success and failure.
A USP is a statement or phrase that describes why a customer should choose your product or service over competitors. It should be clear, concise, and persuasive. It should also be
specific enough to differentiate your offering from that of your competitors.
Creating Financial Projections & Cash Flow Forecasts
Creating accurate financial projections and cash flow forecasts is essential for any business. It helps you to plan for the future, anticipate potential problems, and make informed decisions. By using a financial projections template, businesses can quickly create a comprehensive picture of their company’s financial health.

SINCE opening in 2003, manager and head nurse Sally Emery-Luxmoore and her team have been providing dedicated care at home to those who need it most. The team at Angels Nursing are available for their patients 24/7, 365 days a year and island-wide, offering comprehensive and tailored care programmes.
Known as the most trusted and experienced provider of adult and child care services in the Balearics, the kind, trustworthy and professional team is made up of experienced nurses, midwives, carers and babysitters to offer a service adapted to patients’ individual needs.
The experienced caregivers are available on a short or long-term basis for live-in and overnight care, in addition to weekend cover at the same rate as weekdays. patients and loved ones to ensure the highest quality of care, a kind heart, helpful hands and the benefit of their experience in the care industry.
For clients who don’t speak fluent Spanish, Angels can send a bilingual team member to accompany them to doctor and hospital appointments, to translate not just what is said, but the meaning and consequences of what the doctor says. They will help with asking any questions and, in turn, get the diag-

Set up for success
MANY hours a week are spent in the office or at our place of work, so it’s essential to create the right environment for ourselves and our staff. This has become increasingly obvious following the pandemic, where a huge amount of people began working from home permanently or on a regular basis.
Considering our senses is one of the first steps to creating the perfect working environment, encouraging employees growth and focus. With our senses bombarded every day, it’s important to create a workplace where your surroundings will have a positive and beneficial impact - nobody enjoys working in an environment that has a fraught atmosphere, cramped spaces, bright lights and loud noises.
An office is generally not thought of as an interesting space, but one that’s plain and functional. If you use a bit of imagination, it can be transformed into a place
you’ll want to be and will in the long run, improve performance.
Everything we see around us has an effect; a photo or painting that inspires creativity or even just makes you feel happy is a step in the right direction. To appeal to the sense of smell, freshly cut flowers can be placed on your desk or an invigorating scented air freshener.
For those who work from home, it’s important to create a space dedicated to working and ensure that you are free of any distractions.
When designed and organ-
ised properly, many people are actually more productive when working from home. Find a quiet spot with plenty of natural light, and be sure to invest in a supportive chair that will encourage a good posture.
An untidy desk can be a big distraction and contribute to stress. Not only will you not be able to easily find what you’re looking for in a messy working space; it’ll also affect your mood and overall productivity. Take the time to organise your paperwork, documents and stationery, and file so easily accessible.
• Medication and appointment reminders
• Getting ready for bed/making the bed
• Laundry/ironing/light household chores
• Assistance with caring for any pets
• Incontinence care including changing pads/catheters and stoma bags
Sally and her team of Angels are also dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of people who are homebound, have a serious illness, need palliative care or postsurgical support, and those who are physically and/or mentally challenged. There is a qualified and experienced team in place who will fine-tune, monitor and maximise care programmes by liaising with other healthcare professionals and deciding on the best actions. These services also include wound dressing and advice on long-term dressings for ulcers and bed sores, administering injections
Spinning plates
RUNNING a business often means keeping a LOT of plates spinning.
And while it’s often said that women are better multitaskers than men, research has repeatedly shown that the brain is significantly more efficient (and effective) when dealing with one task at a time.
Having said that, we live in the real world where that isn’t always possible. So how do you multitask efficiently when you need to? We explore this below.
Firstly, it’s important to know that true multitasking is much rarer than we think. The art of doing two things at once - ie, writing while talking on the phone - has its limitations. So don’t beat yourself up if you wonder how everyone else seems to achieve more tasks in one go. They’re not; they’re just managing their time differently.
That is why prioritising is so important.
Prioritising tasks can be daunting, especially when you have a lot on your plate. However, it is an essential skill for anyone who wants to stay productive and organised.
Write a list of everything you have to do and then assign each task with a number from 1 to 5 (one being most urgent). Forget
and enemas, physiotherapy and vital sign monitoring.
A necessary side of caregiving is improving the comfort and quality of life of patients who are no longer responsive to curative treatments.
The comprehensive palliative care programme provided by Angels is provided through the team in collaboration with physicians to manage pain, fatigue, delirium, anorexia, anxiety, depression and breathlessness. Along with this, they also provide much-needed psychological and emotional support to patients’ loved ones, helping them to discuss and decide on the most appropriate treatments and care services.
The Angels team is made up of a large number of caring, dedicated, professional and qualified babysitters, highly trained healthcare assistants and specialist nurses.
References are rigorously checked before joining the team, and continuous training is carried out to ensure the highest level of care at all times and in all situations.
the fives for now and just start with the ones.
Next, focus on grouping tasks.
While our ability to actually do multiple things at once is limited, that doesn’t mean we can’t group similar tasks together.
If you need to write both a blog post and social media, do both at the same time while you’re already in the creative mood, rather than drawing out the process and splitting them into two tasks.
Finally, avoid distractions. While your brain is already focused on multiple tasks, it really doesn’t need anything else getting the way.
If you really are trying to spin all the plates at once, at least take something off the table which isn’t helping you, whether that’s the radio, the TV or your phone.
Interview with Sally Emery-Luxmoore
HI Sally! Tell us a bit about yourself and Angels Nursing
I came here in 1991, having been very disillusioned by the NHS and knowing since a teenager that I didn’t want to live in the UK.
I lived in France and Germany for short periods and realised I did not want to live there either. I’d been teaching myself Spanish from a book after qualifying, and I was planning to go to Valencia as I had been there many times and loved it. However, my then au pair offered me his parent’s holiday apartment in Santa Ponsa and, because it was pre-social media and the internet, I had no idea how long paperwork took to do or how to fulfil the many requirements!
When did you create Angels and what was your inspiration?
I did many jobs while waiting for my residencia paperwork to be accepted and my qualifications to be recognised by the Spanish Nursing College, including working in a nursing home. I had a wakeup call during work one night, suddenly realising how
interesting older people are and, in one shift, I would find out so much about the residents, their lives and perceptions.
I worked as head nurse for an other agency for eight years, before starting Angels 20 years ago, in May 2003. It was very chal -
lenging starting a company, and more so to maintain it. I was juggling being a mother, dealing with never ending new requirements and bureaucracy, constantly learning new things, and my only managerial skills were those I learnt through running a ward. But there has been huge satisfaction gained from a sense of purpose and doing something I love, the numerous wonderful references and feedback we receive, and caring for different generations of some resident families.
What do you enjoy most about having your own business?
The best thing about being your own boss is you can follow your passion whilst controlling your own destiny. You can choose the people you work with. You take the risks, but reap the rewards. There is a huge satisfaction in knowing you have helped someone in their hours of need. It has changed my perspective on life and my own humaneness.
Everyone needs an Angel at some time in their life. Knowing that the team and I are improving
the quality of someone’s life, or their final days, or encouraging the recovery after, for example, an illness, fracture, surgery, long hospitalisation or a stroke, is the greatest reward.
What advice would you give aspiring businesswomen?
Running a business is a constant learning curve and is extremely demanding, you will need to push yourself and make sacrifices. You must have a deep sense of purpose, set high goals, learn to ask, have determination, willingness to put in hours, show leadership but encourage teamwork, remain approachable and take care of your staff - after all, they are the best advertising for your company.
What plans do you have for the future of the business?
I take it year by year, but my main objective is to work on communication and leadership skills, become a little more tech savvy, constantly updating my vision plan, whilst obviously ensuring the sustainability, and development of the company and team; Angels.

Starting business
IT’S never too late to become your own boss and create your own business and, although there is no set pathway to creating a successful company, our top tips are a great place to start.
1. Decide what you are passionate about and choose your niche
As we have read from many of our featured businesswomen in this edition, being passionate about your business and its purpose is crucial. It is also critical that you choose a niche that will help you to identify your target audience and meets the needs of customers.
2. Study your competitors
Studying your competitors and their marketing strategy, pricing, products and services will help you to compete and help to decipher what you can do differently. Finding out what your competitors are lacking is a great way to get ahead and provide a service that others don’t.
3. Solve a problem
Creating your business around a problem or need will ensure that potential customers know exactly what you provide and how it can help them. It will also make your marketing strategy more streamlined, resulting in more business.
4. Focus on your customers
Putting your company’s primary focus on client experience will result in numerous word-of-mouth recommendations and more custom.
Consider things from the customer’s perspective and pay close attention to what they have to say. This will allow you to solve any problems you may have and leave them with the impression that they have been heard. This will also create great relationships with your customers, which will encourage them to keep returning to you.
5. Keep your employees happy
Keeping your employees happy is paramount. High staff turnover and unhappy, overworked employees are all detrimental to your business and its success. After all, your employees are your best advertisement.
6. Build morale
The secret to a focused, happy and productive team is making sure that your employees are happy. Many entrepreneurs and business owners overlook the importance of keeping morale high, however, if employees aren’t happy they won’t be on board with you. Team-building exercises, extra training and regular meetings can all help to keep your workforce dedicated to your business.

Deborah left school after her O-Levels and went on to study business at college before starting her own glass and ceramics company with very little funding at the age of 19.
The dragon’s glass and ceramics business supplied premium stores such as Harvey Nichols; however, despite having sole agency rights, the products began showing up in other main street shops, and Deborah moved away due to a lack of funds for a court fight. She then went on to start a number of other businesses, including a prize bingo concession at Butlins and a franchise for the Italian clothing manufacturer Stefanel.
Deborah got a position in
the family arcade business and worked her way up to Operations Director before going across to the holiday park side of the firm - Weststar Holidays - with several successful enterprises under her belt. She was promoted to Managing Director in just two years and built the firm to give highquality UK family holidays to over 150,000 people each year.
Determined to secure her future, she conducted a management buyout in 1999, borrowing the required sums from Lloyds to take over the business. Her long-term goal had been to expand the company, and the early years of TGGL, her newly established organisation, were characterised by significant investment.
With three prominent locations earning strong occupancy rates in a fragmented industry, Weststar quickly became the target
of multiple takeover offers. Deborah finally sold the company to Phoenix Equity Partners in 2005 for £33 million, retaining a 23 per cent interest and an active involvement in the company.
After Weststar was sold to Parkdean Vacations for £83 million, she sold her remaining interest in the company.
Deborah joined the Dragon’s Den investment panel for Series three of the iconic BBC show and has subsequently invested in a number of firms.
Deborah is also a huge supporter of several environmental charities and initiatives, including the annual Observer Ethical Awards, which she has judged since 2008. She is a member of the World Wildlife Fund, the world’s premier environmental organisation, and she also serves as a Patron and Trustee for Tusk Trust.

First Lady of business: How Eleanor Roosevelt
THE role of First Lady is now automatically associated with gestures of goodwill and a presence on the international stage, but it wasn’t always that way. Pioneering First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt blazed a trail that has inspired generations of women to follow in her footsteps.
Eleanor Roosevelt was the wife of former American President Franklin D Roosevelt, but she was also an accomplished writer, diplomat, and social activist in her own right, positions that she did not give up when her family moved into the White House. Eleanor instead fought to begin breaking a glass ceiling that many women continue breaking today.
As a First Lady, Eleanor used her platform to promote social justice and human rights. She fought tirelessly for civil rights, women’s rights, and workers’ rights, and travelled the world to promote international understanding and peace. She was a true leader who knew how to get things done, even in the face of opposition.
Eleanor faced adversity head-on throughout her life, and once said “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are
able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along’.” The quote speaks of the resilience and determination that women in business need to succeed.

The original woman leader: Cleopatra’s timeless leadership lessons
CLEOPATRA is one name that simply cannot be ignored when talking about women in business. As the last Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, her reign was decisive in the legacy of the entire empire and the lives of millions.
During her two decades in power, Cleopatra faced numerous challenges due to societal expectations which included restricting women from holding positions of authority. However, her intelligence, political talents, and unwavering determination enabled her to overcome these obstacles and lead Ancient Egypt to prosperity.
As well as being a skilled politician, Cleopatra was known for her diplomatic prowess, partially thanks to her ability to speak nine languages fluently. Her knowledge of these different languages helped her communicate with people from various backgrounds, including diplomats, traders, and soldiers. She also possessed exceptional strategic thinking abilities, which helped in forming valuable alliances with some of the most influential men of her time.
Cleopatra was also an advocate for education and commissioned a library in Alexandria, which became one of the most advanced centres of knowledge of the era.
ing your own business or a seasoned businesswoman, the lessons of Eleanor Roosevelt can guide us all on our journeys. Her legacy reminds us that obstacles can be overcome, and that women have a vital role to play in shaping the future of our world.
Healthy mind in a healthy body
GETTING to the top may take hard work and determination, but actually staying at the top takes something else entirely; stamina.
But none but the superhuman among us can have stamina without actually taking care of ourselves properly.
With a hectic workload though, how do you get in the nutrition, rest and balance you need to stay at your best? Why, by building into your day of course.
There are plenty of ways subtly include healthier decisions into your day. When it’s time for a break, for example there’s an opportunity to get outside the office and stretch your legs while getting some vitamin D from the sun, which is good for both metabolism and mood.
Taking nutrient-rich meals
and snacks to work will also help to maintain maximum energy levels while preventing the urge to snack on the office birthday cake. The best way to prepare your fuel for the day is to combine
slow-release wholegrain carbohydrates with lean protein every two to three hours.
Try some natural yoghurt with fruit, wholegrain sandwiches, low-fat cheese and crackers, nut-based snacks,
sushi or wraps. There are also salad, vegetables and soup, which are all easy to prepare.
One of the simplest but most important things of all to do though is to rehydrate, by drinking at least two litres of water each day and limiting caffeine to two to three coffees a day.
Finally, while running a business means there is always something to think about, give your mind a chance to restore itself to max power by choosing a fixed time to shut off social media, computers and phone calls each day. Not only will this help to reduce stresss levels slightly, but getting enough rest also helps to boost memory function and motor skills, meaning you’re at you’re best for when you need it most; during work hours.
Cleopatra’s leadership style was defined by her willingness to take risks. She was not afraid to make bold decisions, such as aligning herself with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, which built even more power and influence for her. She was also a charismatic leader who attracted loyal followers.
Cleopatra was a remarkable woman leader. Her intelligence, determination, and strategic thinking enabled her to overcome challenges and lead Egypt to prosperity. Her legacy continues to inspire women in business, and her story serves as a reminder that women can achieve great things in any field.
Cleopatra was one of the earliest examples of a strong woman leader who maintained a vast empire.
