SESAM: about SESAM [Small European Students of Architecture Meeting] is a European conference for architecture students, which takes place during the year in different countries with different theme. Workshops, lectures and exhibitions are organized, according to the theme, with 100 students from 40 countries being involved. The theme is related to concerns raised by the very same region where the conference takes place and the actions- interventions range in both theoretical and practical levels.
EASA: about SESAM is part of EASA [European Architecture Students Assembly]. EASA is the only organization of its kind in Europe and is fundamentally different to all other student architecture organizations around the world. Fundamentally EASA is a network of students, by students, for students, there is no central organization or board, no standing affiliation with any external establishment exists.
HISTORY EASA was founded in 1981 when students of architecture from Liverpool invited fellow students from all over Europe to come together to discuss and work on proposals addressing the problem of the city. The meeting comprised of 300 delegates, architecture students and this constituted the first EASA. This assembly developed into an annual international event, where European architecture students gather in a different place every year with the purpose of exchanging ideas and points of view over architecture and working on proposals related to this context of our education and ambitions. The first SESAM took place in 1992 in the city Villafames in Spain and since then it has been hosted in many European cities, such as Rome, Istanbul, Manchester, etc. Greece has hosted EASA three times, once in Athens in 1985, once in Kavala in 1999 and once in Eleusina in 2007.
ASSEMBLY Every SESAM assembly involves the participation of 100 architecture students who come together for an event composed of workshops, lectures, debates and exhibitions related to the proposed theme for the city in which the event takes place. The theme is always linked with reflections derived from the place and the interventions and consequently the actions and developments that occur are both practical and theoretical, with an intrinsic link to context.

THEME This SESAM will be organized for a week during May, under the theme “Colossus VS LandmARCH. The aim of sesam012 is to explore the concept of landmark and identify the principles and the qualities to which a landmark should refer. The example of the Colossus will be used comparatively and as a source of inspiration as apart from being a global landmark, had a strong theoretical background and ideological symbolism.
PLACE The Small European Students of Architecture Meeting sesam012 will be held in Rhodes, Greece. SESAM012 is a city based event. During the one week 100 architecture students from all over Europe will explore the city characteristics and intervene with its context. Rhodes, the island where Colossus of Rhodes was constructed, is expected to be an inspiration for the tutors and the participants.
THE EASA NETWORK In addition to the annual summer and spring meetings, EASA actively supports international communication and exchange through its national contacts. These representatives [2 per country] are in a regular contact throughout the year and meet every autumn for a week at the nominal INCM [Intermediate National Contact Meeting] which is again held in a different country each year. During these meetings past events reviews are preformed and decisions for the future events are discussed and confirmed amongst the representatives from each participating country.

7 LEGAL FRAMEWORK EASA, from the outset, has always acted as an organization that takes on a new legal form every year, in the countries in which the assemblies are held. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the host countries to organize the conferences, co-ordinate the EASA and SESAM activities and perform the selection of the meeting’s participants for that year.

WHERE WILL IT BE HELD? SESAM012 will be held in the island of Rhodes, Greece, where the workshops, lectures, discussions and exhibitions will take place. The theme (Colossus VS LandmARCH) deals with the contemporary landmarks in an attempt to identify and assess the reflections of architectural choices in different aspects of life. Through lectures and activities we will help the participants to obtain a personal vision beyond the descriptive interpretation, which is able to represent the qualities of a contemporary landmark, capture small conceptual details and recognize changes that could be made in the design process.
RHODES The island of Rhodes hosted one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus. The latter was a large-scale statue which made Rhodes well known worldwide. The city of Rhodes consists of several layers, and especially the Medieval Town of Rhodes is the result of different architectures belonging to various historic eras, predominantly those of the Knights of St. John. In 1988, the old town of Rhodes was designated as a World Heritage City by UNESCO. The island’s selection to host SESAM012 was made based on the expectation that this important landmark of the past, Colossus, which was a symbol of freedom and unity of people, will constitute an inspiration point for the participants and tutors in order to explore the concept of contemporary landmarks and identify the principles and qualities to which a landmark should refer. Regarding the venues for the assembly, the team has already confirmed several places that will host the event. The accommodation place will be a sports hall, the stadium of Diagoras. In addition to this, there is a number of spaces available in which to develop the different workshops: “The Town Hall Square”, “the Rodini Park” and “the Medieval Castle Ditch”.

THE THEME Every SESAM is held in a different European city and the organizing team chooses a theme that constitutes the connecting thread to guide the whole assembly. This theme is the inspiration for the workshops and it is supported by lectures, excursions and events in order to provide a better understanding of the surrounding reality. The organizers of SESAM012 have developed the theme “Colossus VS LandmARCH. Nowadays, that the importance of the image is becoming more essential than anything else, the meaning of a landmark, the crucial point of reference for a site, has changed dramatically. Throughout the assembly, 100 students of architecture will focus on the contemporary landmarks and try to identify and assess the reflections of architectural choices in different aspects of life. Of course, the purpose of this SESAM is not the reconstruction of the Colossus, but the latter is considered as a good example to be used as the inspiration point, in an attempt to reach more general conclusions.
