0 1 | ТHESIS PROJECT: WINE CULTURAL COMPLEX, MENDOZA, ARGENTINA Redefining Wine’s Cultural Value through Industrial Heritage valorization
Year: Location: Professors: Team with:
July 2017 Mendoza, Argentina Helder Casal Ribeiro Victoria Dragoni
The motivations behind our work arise from the neces sity to raise awareness about the need of urban and functional integration of the industrial heritage in Mendoza, Argentina, and the importance of its enhancement and cultural valorization. The inspiration for the architectural theme and the approach of the design came from the remarkable example of “oasis-city”, implemented in Mendoza. The way that a desert is transformed into a place with excellent environmental conditions to live in, along with the ingrained wine culture that catalyzed the development of Mendoza, are key elements that we have followed in the work process. Our project, a WINE CULTURAL COMPLEX intends to promote an integrative identity capable of embracing the past, materialized in the architectural heritage, and at the same time, encouraging the heritage’s urban assimilation and its recognition as a source of sustainable development and social integration in the present. The new Cultural Center dedicated to the oenological culture is located in an ancient wine growing area, which today is abandoned even though it is in a strategical urban area. The proposal assumes the recovery of the existing winery and the construction of new volumes on the portion of the site that was left abandoned after the partial demolitions followed the disposal of the winery. The re-activation of this architectural heritage is based on a design approach that combines the care for conservative instances with the need for interpretation and updating, linking the past and the future of the site, also through the use of architecture as a fundamental means of preservation and transmission of a renewed wine’s cultural value.

Godoy Cruz Square: Main node of the city and urban void inside the layout. Surrounded by important buildings: municipality, police, main cathedral and shops.
Hipermarket: constructed after the demolition of the winery in 1996. The heavy voulume has strong presence in the context. It takes one third of the winery plot surface.
Francisco de la Rosa Str.: Maure water channel is a main structural line of the urban layout, since the constitution of the urbanization. This wide element used to work as a big pause that allowed wider perspectives towards the winery. Urban fabric: heterogeneity. Mainly residential use.
Rivadavia Str.: connection between San Martin Av., the winery and Godoy Cruz square. Used to be characterized by the presence of beverage shops and warehouses in the times when the winery was still functioning. Urban fabric: heterogeneity. Mainly residential use.
Project area: void in the urban fabric, nowadays works as a parking lot. It has broad views from San Martin Avenue.
Winery: it was partially destroyed. The remaining parts correspond to the first constructions..
San Martin Av.: main structural line of the urban layout, connects Godoy Cruz with the city center. It has a primary hierarchy. Urban fabric: heterogenity. It has no past reminiscences except some fragments of houses with continuous facades over the sidewalk. Average height: 4m. Commercial use.
Trees: give continuity to a heterogenic and noisy context.

Open spaces: System of piazzas and transition areas
They arise from the reading of the site’s geometry characterized by the fragmentation of the urban fabric and the perimeter arrangement of the built mass and they are reinforced through the arrangement of the trees as geometric green masses. They also consider the geometry of the Winery, its proportions and layout to establish the lines that generate the footprint of the new building.
The layout of the Winery is understood as a pattern organized by void spaces. The same concept is taken for the design of the new building where the voids organise a sliding system of boxes. The dialog between the new contruction and the existing building is given by a system of piazzas connected to each other by transition spaces, changing the perception of the scale along its path as it happens with the open spaces of the winery.
Atmosphere: Voids/ Water/ Green system
Solid built tissue. Juxtaposition and spatial interaction between existing and new construction
Water and green play key role in the project, evoking the concepts of the oasis-city. Both elements are organized in a rationalized way, as it happens in the city of Mendoza, dialoguing with the surrounding water and vegetation. On the other hand, the use of light inside the building creates atmospheres related to the light and shadow play that characterize the urban image of the city.
The new building takes the proportions from the existing building to define its geometry. At the same time, the boxes that compose it are displaced according to the winery layout, advancing over the voids and retracing where they face solid masses. The volumetric relation and a fair balance of built masses between Old and New buildings is achieved by their dialogue between the consecutive system of open public squares.

Since the New structure derives from the existing one, the dialog between them in the different aspects is always defined. Programmatically to interpret this urban layout and the character of the building and their spaces, the existing structures are designed as follow: - converting the ex-administrative and the fermentation blocks into a Wine museum, while the biggest one – the ex-wine storage, into a Local product’s Market.

The New building with its complementary functions is focused on the educational, cultural and lifestyle aspects of our topic. It’s design in general is a set of two courtyards – one enclosed in water, and green one that is open. The idea of having three moments of Green and two moments of water are decisions made for the need to frame the views and to create the landscape for them. Thus there are two landscapes – one that is interior to the building, which are the two patios, and the landscape that is in between spaces.

0 2 | STUDIO PROJECT 1: A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY
Portfolio | Eva Chausheva
PROFESSORS: Prof. David Palterer Prof. Francesco Caprini Prof. Leonardo Belladelli
PROJECT BRIEF: The area for the project is in the middle of the city of Mantua, Italy where now there is the jail. The project was devided into two phases - the first one was in groups ( with M. Protou, H. Gulsan) and aimed the general design of the area, defining fisrt geometrical shapes of the building andd the open spaces. Here the main functions of residential and mixed commercial uses had to be distributed accordingly the task. The second phase was idividual and here we had to draw a deepening of the project defining the final shape of the buildings and open spaces, and studying the best technological solutions to achieve the best value for quality. The design of the new buildings followed the studing of historical, architectural, technological, textural references in Mantova to achieve integration in the existing historical surrounding. The three big volumes are designed as Student’s dormitory, while the smallest volume is given the function of duplex housing, located in the most quiet part of the area.

Phase 2 In the second phase I have designed a Student dormitory, on via Poma and duplex houses in the inner part of the plot. The design of the student’s dormitory aims to create different types of studios to answer different needs. There are three main functions designed as common spaces that favours comunication between residents - common kitchen, laundry and study room, situated on both residential levels. The ground floor is given public access to offices and a cafe-library oriented towards the inner semi-private court. The design of the facades are inspired from the local traditions in using bricks and earthy color schemes. Since it is warm and humid climate it was needed to create the openings and the shadings in a way to manage better microclimate inside the buildings.

RESTORATION OF MAGAZZINI DEL SALE, MANTUA, ITALY PROFESSORS: Prof. A. Saisi Prof. L Balboni Prof. S. Varvaro Prof. F. Fassi
TEAM WITH: V. Dragoni S. Platisa V. Zanolli G. Biazzi
PROJECT BRIEF: Magazzini del sale is located in the historical center of Mantova, Italy. It has long history starting with the construction of the Roman wall (aroun I-II cent. a.C.). Then followed different phases of construction - Salt storage (XVI c. a.C) and Gonzaga’s Stables (1523-1567) and their connection through the Roman wall in 1831. After centuries of different use today the building suffers from structrural damages and material decays and it’s in disuse. The aim of the project was the evaluation of the state of preservation of the building and the design of a preservational project, including planning actions for the re-use of the facility by creating new fuctions inside. The new function assigned for Magazzini del sale and the additional Torre dello Zuccharo is Contemporary Museum. Being close to the Mantova’s famouse hisotircal Prince Path (Percorco del Principe) it can become part of the tourist route. URBAN NTERVENTION The main entrance to the building on via Academia is marked by designed paved platform that not only changes the material and color of the street, but being slightly elevated it works to lower the car’ speed. The same gesture is made on via Tazzoli to connect with the Tower, designed for temporary exhibitions. Furthurmore, a hanging exhibition is thought to be hanged up to form “art tunnel”.

INTERIOR SPACES - Remodeling The design of new constructions and the demolitions of existing ones were thought carefuly taking into consideration their value and how it will affect the original building and the new contemporary needs. For this reasons we have created flexible spaces that allow various activities. The new additions are reversible and recognisable and detached from the existing construction. The use of corten material in the facade boxes and the new stairs and ramp creates the narrative of the spaces and links between them. In order to underline the importance of the Roman wall we choose to replace the structure of the roof and to create a new shape that allows light to come inside and enlighten the masonry. Moreover this makes the roof construction lighter than the old one which eases the overal constructive problems. INTERIOR SPACES - Design

The functions designed inside are museum exhibitions and a cafe-bar on the Ground floor level, whereas on the First level multifunctional space can hosts workshops/lecture/exposition depending on the current program. The visitor’s path flows from once space to another, changing levels by existing and designed vertical connections. On the first level we have dedicated another flexible space to be used by guest artist as their apartment during their visit. New construction of hanging wall operable panels allow flexible space that adjust to different needs on the First floor. When not in use the artist’s apartment can be completely opened and incorporated with the rest space using the same technique.

PROFESSOR: TEAM WITH: Helder Casal V. Dragoni, S. Platisa Ribeiro V. Zanolli, G. Biazzi D.Turfanda
PROJECT BRIEF: The project goal is to open a research focused on the relationship between heritage and project, or rather the relationship between architectural and landscape pre-existing conditions in historically multi-layered environments, and interventions of requalification and urban renewal. The (re)reading of the context motivated by the inclusion of new urban functions and new architectural structures in the Porta di Mulina area, will permit to address the meaning of time as an architectural notion in the interpretation of the built heritage.

RE-USE AND REFURBISHMENT OF FORTRESS PIETOLE, MANTOVA
PROFESSORS: TEAM WITH: Paolo Citterio S. Trabously Paolo Corradini S. Baniasadi Matteo Scaltritti
PROJECT BRIEF:
The object of this studio is Forte di Pietole - curently abandoned fortress located on southeast from Mantova, Italy. The whole fortress was devided into different parts according the new assigned functions. Each team had to choose their theme and develop the design in the speciffic part. The given topics were wellness, residential, exhibition and lanscape. The design had to be aware of preservation and conservation of the place. Our team worked on “wellness” topic which took place on the west “Rivelino”. The project followed preliminary studies on the fortress’ history and the possible wellness activities. We decided to create Equestrian center in the most open part - the former ditch, which now is fully overgrown with plants, with additional “sensorial experience route” around the Rivelino again incorporatin the horses as a main figure. The project aims to create space where nature and history, human and animal can meet providing both with comfort and the ability to retreat. The existing warehouses are in good structural condition and free of any structure inside which allows us to re-use them with minimal interventions.
General strategy
-Excavating of the ditch to return to original state of the fort design. -Cleaning the free growing vegetation form the ditch to create completely open space that will serve the equestrian function -Reuse of the existing military barracks to host new functions.
Masterplan/ Forte di pietole
-Building a new pedestrian bridge to connect the area with the main access paths -Design of new water channel - a reminder of the original historical use of this part. - Re-use of the existing buildings. -All new construction with respect to existing one - reversible solutions, destinctive from original materials and techniques. 46
- Design of wellness spaces for people and horses - Hypotherapy and Sensorial venue experience

RECONVERSION OF SAINT CHRISTOPHER CHURCH INTO A TEMPORARY EXHIBITION SPACE, MANTOVA, ITALY PROFESSOR: TEAM WITH: L. Peressut S. Chiesa assistant prof.: F. Papashiandi B.Grigoli, T.Longo M.Camponogara
PROJECT BRIEF: The exhibition project of museography aims to reconvert the church into an experimental, flexible and adaptable space for temporary exhibitions in Mantova, recongnizable among the city’s museum panorama. The task includes location and exhibition of different kind of objects, based on chosen theme by each group. The theme of our group is “Light” - as a tool to define the space. According to that “light” here is both the main theme of the exhibition and the main object in each artwork. The name of the exhibition takes as a reference the exhibition by James Turrell at Houghton titled “Lightscape”.
In order to create “new architecture and landscape” within the exisitng one, we have designed BLACK BOXES inside the building to create the actual “landscape”. As a juxtaposition of the “light”, the dark boxes are the “keepers” of all artworks that are made of light (like the LED sculptures by Makoto Tojiki). Each exhibit is placed accordingly to their need of light. A “path of light” marks direction of flow towards the most dark part of the church, to discover another piece of art.
