PHENOMENAL WOMAN ‘Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size but when I start to tell them, they think I am telling lies. I say, it’s in the reach of my arms, the span of my hips, the stride of my step, the curl of my lips. I’m a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that’s me.’ – Maya Angelou.
8. JULY MY HERALD
We take a journey with her on her life and the processes that make her who she is.
1.
Tell us how you transitioned from being a poet to a radio presenter. I used to have a show known as Open Mic hosted by Adelle and I am a former student at USIU. It was at university that a guy asked me to recite my poems on a show for the campus radio station. I ended up staying on for the entire period the show was running. Our shows were recorded and sent to various media houses in Nairobi. A local station was starting up by the name of One Fm and I got a call to host a show and that was the beginning of my radio career.
2.
How do you love being a radio presenter? I do. I cannot detach the Adelle on radio with Adelle off-air. I do not think I am that different. The difference crops up when I am not in studio. I am a loner. I like my space and being able to control those I hang out with.

3.
Tell us about your campaign. Because I had a mic in front of me every month and I had contacts with musicians I believed that little was being done about rape and those affected had no or little knowledge of where to go. I also knew that people were ignorant so I used my social capital to start the campaign. I had no plan but wanted to run with the idea whilst still fresh in mind. I spoke to a friend who would design the logo. To get the campaign running on a great momentum I got known brand ambassadors by the names of Wendy Kimani, Patricia Kihoro and Nick Ndeda as men needed to be involved in the campaign. I scripted stories one of which was my own and shot it at a friend’s house. For those who may not know my story I was raped on 12th December 2008. I went out, took a walk by myself and met a stranger and used an unfamiliar route to the next club. It took me two years to report the incident but this was a step towards healing after all I had started out by blaming herself so writing a statement at the police station was a step on the road to recovery. It should be known that the trauma of abuse never fully leaves a person’s consciousness but like all bad experiences developing compassion and empathy may turn it into a good one. Bringing meaning into your life and others is what many may say as being the best kind of revenge on the abusers. Adelle continues to share her journey. MY HERALD JULY .9

4.
What are some of the rape centers in Kenya? Currently there are about four centers that I know of in Nairobi and another is in the process of being set up. The approach we have taken as the No means No campaign is to focus on people who are rape victims and cannot afford therapy as well as those who are financially challenged or educated enough on the steps to take upon being raped. We have five counselors who voluntarily counsel people for free and this could be via the telephone or face to face. The response on Facebook was so good that we altered the approach and made it global where people from other countries could share their stories and campaigns that their countries have taken to address the issue and we see if they could work here.I shared my story and I came to realize that I cannot help everyone who has been raped. It is such a saddening thing to know that you cannot help every single person that needs assistance.
into the social world was challenging at first considering she liked to party and was very social. Now she is more cautious and her definition of fun has changed in meaning. On asking her if she questions the activities she engaged in then now she has stopped blaming herself. It was a mistake doing what she did but it did not warrant what happened. Many may be wondering whether her campaign also addresses rape within the family, this is what she had to say. Adelle is going places and moving mountains. She is certainly the embodiment of the character in Maya Angelou’s poem ‘Still I Rise’. Just like moons, and like suns, with the certainty of tides, just like hope springing high, still I’ll rise. Out of the huts of histories shame, I rise. Up from a past that’s rooted in pain, I rise. I am a black ocean, leaping and I
6.
Do rape victims ever forget about their ordeals? You cannot. You heal once you realize the event is not forgettable. You need to regain control over how it is going to affect you. It may have changed part of your life but not entirely.
What would you tell a young achiever? Do not be defined by trends or individuals. I get blown away by the fact that our lives are like blank canvas and we are the painters. You need to know who you are and what motivates you. It is sad that we do not celebrate individuals and who they are. It should not be what you are.

xploring new territories, redefining possibilities. As much as change can be fascinating it can also be a frightening experience. William Bridges in his book: Managing transition; making the most of change explains change as being situational and external. It is through this explanation that the man by the name of Jonah strikes you not as an oddball but rather as a person whose experience with change has made him a stronger and better individual. Meet Jonah Simba a thirty five year old man who is visually impaired and despite not having sight his vision for himself and his organization may come as a surprise to many. He tells us how he has morphed into the man he has become today.
1.
Tell us who Jonah is? I was born in 1978 to two amazing parents who have supported me through thick and thin. I am also the founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Purse a non-governmental organization created in 2007 and geared towards giving hope to the disabled especially the blind. This organization was founded upon the realization that the visually impaired persons in society missed out on opportunities most of which were technologically based with specific regards to computers.
2.
what is your educational background and the thought process
in creating the Purse? I studied Theology and Bible Studies at the East African School of Theology situated in Buruburu with an aim to work in a non-governmental organization. I got an opportunity to work with World Vision in Rwanda for a short while and based on that interaction I got a chance to work with the same organization here in Kenya. A challenge cropped up when I realized that ninety percent of the work was done using computers and was not considerate of the visually impaired and I began thinking of a way that would address those issues. I know many people are wondering whether you were born blind?
3.
No I was not. My blindness began in 1991 due to a condition known as retinitis. I was told by the doctors I consulted that the condition was mostly hereditary but could also be brought about by other factors such as poor nutrition or excessive exposure to sunlight. work with the same organization here in Kenya. A challenge cropped up when I realized that ninety percent of the work was done using computers and was not considerate of the visually impaired and I began thinking of a way that would address those issues.
4.
what was the transition like? From sight to total blindness? At first it was a challenge this is because MY HERALD JULY .11
I was forced to get used to visual impairment. I experienced a lot of shock but as I was partially blind I prayed that it would not fully set in until I completed school. It was at EAST (East Africa School of Theology) that my sight went completely.
In August 2003 hope was regained. I travelled to Rwanda where I went to counsel people who were being affected by the genocide that had taken place in 1994. I worried a lot about dropping out of school to study braille and I spoke to the administration to have someone to volunteer to assist me in reading and writing. An angel in the form of Irene Gatere from Kenya Assemblies of God worked with me for two years before leaving for the United States.
5.
What are the other challenges you faced? Mobility proved to be an issue. Living in Nairobi as a disabled person is a huge setback as those who are able to see do not know how to relate to a visually impaired person. As a result I have a small circle of friends. There is little empathy when it comes to assisting us in crossing roads and other things and time is wasted moving from one place to another.
6.
What habits have changed? I am a soccer fan. The joy of soccer for me is not only in the goals scored and who scored them but the faces of the people who make the crowd, the uniforms the players wear etc. Now I cannot experience the same joy I had before. I also like reading. But upon becoming visually impaired I have been forced to seek books that are in digital format and these are few. It is very saddening.
7.
What is your vision Jonah? My concentration at the moment is on enriching people’s lives rather than my own. It gives me a lot of satisfaction doing so. An example is putting up a special resource centre for a special school. You get to witness the lives of 12. JULY MY HERALD
teachers and students being transformed as a result of the centre existing.
8.
What would you tell a young achiever who is visually im paired? Everybody has a skill. What is important is improving those skills so that they benefit your life. Nowadays due to information technology we are able to work as accountants even as a visually impaired person. Because of the physical challenges you need to be aggressive to ensure that opportunities come your way. Get out of your way to look for opportunities. Sympathy will not feed you. It is good when people help but do not let your growth be curtailed by relying on handouts. It is only in search of opportunities that you can get more in life. As for the able bodied young achiever, you are blessed. You never know what you have until you lose it. A blind person regained his sight after a successful operation. He had been blind since birth. He had never seen colours. When asked to compare between the real red and the imagined red his answer was “the human mind can never successfully imagine the beauty of nature. You just have to see it to imagine it.”
9
. What are your experiences when
it comes to running The Purse? My main challenge was finances. A friend sent me startup capital of Ksh 38000 which I used to purchase a computer and yet another friend hosted me at his office to start with.Innovation was also a challenge. I had to come up with ideas which would effectively transform the lives of the blind. The Purse finally narrowed it down to disability information technology. We are in partnership with organizations and the government to empower visually impaired staff on how to use speech software. The perks of The Purse are that we focus on an untapped market. The blind are an untapped resource. When
many bright visually impaired people are assisted and made better they give back to the society. Being in business is yet another exciting experience in that we sell special software for the blind and IT gadgets. We hope that a time will come for us to sell many embossers (braille printers) in a year.Through a resource centre at St Peters Claver and Isinya Multipurpose Development Training Institute we have been able to train approximately fifty teachers from all over the country who enrolled in these institutions. We have also been able to set up a re source centre for the National Fund for the disabled in Kenya to serve its visually impaired staff and trustees. This is the centre we use as a model for other institutions who would like resource centres to be set up for their visually impaired personnel.
10
.What is your parting shot?
We are living in a hopeless world. Do everything to keep hope alive. We as the Purse are doing our best to ensure that Article 54 of the constitution is implemented. I am leading a campaign known as ‘Kutenda 54’ that involves civil society and disabled politicians and other well- wishers. It is with these words that Jonah continues to be determined and hopeful that the change we seek we shall witness. He continues to achieve more by being a better person and also striving to improve the world for the disabled. If you wish to find out more on the Kutenda 54 campaign check the

e all know Brenda Wairimu as the famous actress and humanitarian. With her immense success most people would think that she has ‘diva tendencies.’ On the contrary she is down to earth, affable and one of the easiest celebrities we have encountered yet. Born in Eldoret, Brenda is the last born of four girls and was raised in Mombasa and studied in an all girls catholic primary school. She later got a place again in one of the top all girls secondary school, both in Mombasa. Growing up, she got teased a lot about apparently having quite a big head she also learnt how to ride a bike and how to take care of pets from her uncle(even frogs). “My father used to tell me how I would always say hello to people, even strangers on the street, I guess I was a happy child, but I also used to

over think things much like now” She always wanted to be a pilot form when she can remember but for the most part she also dreamt of being a vet. She could spend most of her time watching veterinary shows and learning the perks and wit her pets this would come in handy. She still wishes she could be a vet even up-to now. This is what she had to say about her teenage life, “I wasn’t the prettiest girl in the lot, not even in the top 5!!! Never got any letters from our brother schools *sad face*, this left me with a lot of time to study, that’s why I did very well in high school. Although even with that I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to be, who I really was or even where I saw myself in future. I made wonderful friends in my teenage life though.” She lost her dad last year due to kidney failure and wishes that he is very proud of her and puts in a good word with the man upstairs. People would say that she was the light in his eyes and loved her more than he did himself. She admires her mother very much and says she is a very strong woman and a tough cookie,it got a bit rocky when she was a teenager. The rebellious attitude paired with the know it all attitude just conflicted with what her mother knew was right for her. She would always try to manipulate her parents to get whatever she wanted, last born tendencies. I asked her about how she knew she was set on the path that she is now and she was really excited to speak about it. “Becoming an actress started out as me trying it out, I really didn’t know if I’d be any good at it.I still think I have a long way to go but straight from my first acting job, I was head hunted to star in East Africa’s first soap opera and that’s when I realised that I must be doing something right! The more I acted, the more it dawned on me that I really love it. Right now I cannot picture myself in a different path, I love bringing stories to life, recreating scenarios and evoking emotion from the audience.I think it’s such a noble profession. We help people escape daily reality, even for a short time.” It all started when she saw a post on Facebook calling for auditions for the series Changing Times. She was amongst the 800 people who auditioned and got selected. From then on, her career has been on a steady climb. She however had to go to countless auditions for both TV and commercials that were never successful. Her inspiration comes from being notorious for attempting things to show herself that she can actually do them, if nothing else. “My role models are all veteran Kenyan actors that I used to watch. From Nini Wacera, to Raymond Wafula, can you imagine now how elated I am to have actually worked with them?! It’s a dream come true.” Her motivation is the possibility of what could be.The slight possibility that someone can become all they ever dreamt of. “I dreamed of working with so many of the people I’m working with now, for me this can only mean the dreams I have now will come to pass 16. She is a busy young lady right now. too, I pray.” She is currently shooting a new series with M-Net where she is a part of the main cast that will begin airing sometime later this year. She also has several initiatives in motion, most of which are geared towards lending a helping hand to the less privileged, an example of this is the ‘Cool 4 Skool’ program that helps provide re-usable sanitary towels to young girls who can otherwise not afford sanitary items and end up missing school when on their periods. She is also involved with Computers For Growth Organization where they take computers and a trainer to the 18. JULY MY HERALD
less privileged schools, so that they can learn basic computer skills to put them on a fair competitive level with students from schools with these facilities.
Currently it works with a Paediatric TB awareness project in Siaya District and her prayer is that they expand nationwide and create more awareness.
A project so dear to her heart is Generation O2 (generation oxygen). It creates awareness in children by mentoring them to become little health ambassadors by practicing good health habits, psycho social support to their family who are sick and also educate each other in school with an aim of raising the next disease free generation. Most of the activities involves visiting the sick children in hospitals and children’s homes for psycho social support.
We should expect more of her on TV, more of her humanitarian work on an even bigger scale. Her parting shot, “Don’t let your light burn out. Feed your passion and watch it grow. Believe, Begin, fight your way through any obstacle in your way...so you can eventually Become. #BBB.”

FINANCE
T
he first most important budgeting rule is that you should spend less money than you earn.
The purpose of a budget is to come up with a system to govern everyday spending.
4:
Organize a simple saving system With your targeted spending plan in place, it’s time to direct your money towards your goals. The best way to save your money is to keep your cash out of spending reach by diverting it to a separate savings account -- one different from the checking account you use for everyday expenditures.
1:
Review your spending Every budget starts with sniffing out your spending habits and determining exactly where your money goes on a day-to-day basis. Don’t skip this step: After all, if you don’t know how much you’re spending and on what right now, you can’t decide where you want to spend and on what from now on. If most of your spending is done with old-fashioned cash, go about your business as usual for one week just write down all of your expenditures. Then project the results over four weeks. Now you have a rough idea of where your dough goes. As stated above, pinpoint the big categories where your overspending occurs.
With your savings on autopilot, all that’s left to do is stay out of your own way. Ah, but that can be much easier said than done, which means going into spending triage mode...
5:
Refrain from unnecessary overspending Life is full of temptations. You can stay strong, grasshopper, with nothing more than a few envelopes and a ball-point pen.
2:
As with all of our lazy budget shortcuts, feel free to add or subtract layers of complexity, depending on how much detail you can stand. But don’t tax yourself too much: Remember that in dollars-and-cents terms, sweating the big stuff before all else will save you the most coin. Plus, it will leave you plenty of time to procrastinate about stuff besides your finances.
Arrange for your next shopping spree After you get over the horror of your daily spending, the next step is to go on a virtual shopping spree. Sorry, this trip doesn’t involve a pit stop at the food court; it’s more like a cerebral trip to the mall of your future.
“
• Grab a piece of paper, a pencil, and a snack. • Make a list of what you need to buy or do over the next three to six months. These could be physical purchases. • Do the same for planned long- term purchases,This could be one to five years.
“
After you develop a spending, plan it means every time you whip out your wallet, you have a tangible list of money goals to help drive your spending decisions and propel you financially forward. Bonus points to those who make a laminated wallet-sized version of the list for everyone in the family.
3:
Carry out simple division With your money goals in hand, pencil in how much each item on your “wish list” is going to run you on a monthly basis. Simply divide the total amount for those new tires by the number of months until you need them. Magic, no? 20. JULY MY HERALD

Joseph Hellon
Musician / Entrepreneur #Oloo Onyango
1.
Tell as a little about yourself? My name is Joseph Hellon and i am a musician. I am involved in other businesses as well but my core business is music. I am well known as a jazz musician, I also teach classical music, contemporary music among others at my school, Jetha house of music.
2.
What was your childhood like? My child hood wasn’t easy, I was born into a family which was poor close to lake Victoria. My father and mother liked singing. My mom used to sing when going on about her duties and I used to hang around her just to hear her sing and that’s how I got my love for music.
3.
Growing up what were your ambitions? I always wanted to be a musician right from child hood because I loved music tremendously. I can even play Orutu the Luo musical instrument made of string of which I once played at the Kenya National Music Festivals and won. I didn’t know that there was such a thing as a musical career I thought that it was natural for everyone to sing. I had an interest to read music and at the age of 10years I knew how to do so. 22. JULY MY HERALD
4.
How was your teenage life, did you suffer from identity crisis like many teenagers do? I am a loving relational kind of a person. I grew up in large family of nine siblings and feeding was not easy. I learned to share and today my house is always full because I find it difficult to be on my own. Having a large family taught me to embrace people’s differences and find good in people. Now I counsel people career wise and mentor people as well for free. There are some people I sponsor to study music as well if they cannot afford it but are talented.
5.
What has your relationship with your parents been like? I really loved my father and mother and my first day of school was really sad because I thought that my parents will really miss me. Ironically, they also were worried that I was going to be very lonely at school. It took me a long time to recover, actually it took me the whole of my primary school life to recover. I enjoyed going with my mum to the river, market and really loved the way she would put me between her laps during a shaving session. My father on the other hand always let me take his tea half way with his radio on and I would leave my tea and drink from his cup
sitting next to him listening to music. This made me feel really special.
6.
How did you realize that you were set on the path that you are on now? Right from the beginning I knew that my path was in music, people tried to discourage me including my teachers who didn’t think that there was much in music career. When I went to Starehe boys my teachers were troubled when they saw I had huge interest in music, they tried to convince me to concentrate on sciences which I was good at so that I can become a doctor, engineer or one of those other reputable disciplines but I was never bent. They even said that music won’t make me money. At Jetha we teach music up to degree level , and people who have taken it seriously have become respectable members of society.
7
.Was there any outside influence that has made you who you are today? As a Christian, my number one influence is God, followed by my parents and people who have contributed several different things at different points in my life.
JOB
8.
What inspired you to do what you are doing currently? My parents.
9.
Who are your role models? My brother, because he went to boarding school. During holidays he would bring great stories about boarding and taught me new songs in different languages, this launched me to a higher level in music of different styles. My teacher Mr. Ambani taught me to read music and in just a year, I was able to train and prepare my church choir for a competition which we later won. I chanced on training myself in music by singing the music while people sang the words in the choir. I would always compare music notes, and timing and that is how I learned.
10
.What was your turning point? When I got a scholarship to Starehe boys center. Coming from a poor family, going to high school was a big thing for me.
11
.You seem to enjoy what you do, tell us what motivates you? My faith in God. I respect people’s choice of worship but I uphold my belief in God because I believe in the mere thought that He would like to see me as creative as He is. People also motivate me, when I interact with people I also get motivated. I love nature a lot and I like walking in the forest to hear crickets and birds sing. My life is lived in sound and picture.
12
.Share with us something we do not know about Hellon? I don’t swim, the last time I tried I stayed on the same spot. Reason is, the first time I wanted to swim was in high school and my trainer just shouted at me to swim. I jumped into the water and started drowning, the other students just stood there and started laughing. I did not develop a phobia for water but I lost interest in swimming.
13
.Are you in a relationship, or married? I am married. My wife was a student and we met at the school where I was teaching. I used to play instruments that were very rare, and therefore retired Major Kamau who saw that I was very good invited me to teach their students for some small pocket money. My wife was a student there and I noticed her because of a photo I saw of her with long and beautiful hair, her unique name also captivated me and I thought there is more to her which I wanted to find out. I later met her playing a piano and we become good friends instantly I was 17 years at the time, we got married six years later. We now have a 1 year old child who loves music so much he can seat down for 30 minutes to watch children’s music. I also adopted my late brother’s two daughters 18 and 14 years old.

Apart from my upcoming book called the Cradle of Life, I am working on my album named Fish Conspiracy which I have been working on since 2011.Unlike my other albums that I normally produce within short periods, this one took a lot of preparation because I want to address various issues that people face. The meaning behind the name Fish conspiracy means that the big fish have conspired to deny the small fish from getting omega three by withholding information from them so that they are less informed and thereby vulnerable and easy to manipulate. had nothing against me and so decided to use my relative Esther Arunga to tarnish myname not knowing that as my relative I had been leaving with her for many years. At the end of the tunnel, I let the law speak for me and I won due to lack of evidence. I am now waiting for a huge compensation for defamation. I will pursue my political ambition after settling my case.

MY RIDE
Let us be honest. As a young woman I am attracted to a car that is spunky and compliments my youthful lifestyle. As such I strive to pick out cars that are fast and call out to me from the onset. The Toyota RunX seems to outdo many of its hatchback counterparts from the word go however in comparison to the Toyota Vitz there are those who may prefer the vitz over any other car. Let us review the general information on both cars.
Toyota Vitz •Its model variants have choices of 1.0l, 1.3l or 1.5l •It has a weight of 1060kg •Its fuel tank capacity is 42litres •Ground clearance of 145mm which is the equiv alent of 5.70 inches •It has front wheel driveToyota Vitz may have an upmarket feel while still remaining a car perfectly at home in the compact vehicle segment. The ‘new’ model of this car is said to have increased by 35mm signaling more leg room for passengers. Both Toyota RunX and Toyota Vitz share some common features such as air-conditioning, power steering and power windows but at the end of the day when you decide to purchase either not only is your decision dependent on fuel economy and its performance but also on what you want to derive from
Toyota RunX •It consists of six model variants with a choice of 1.4l, 1.6l or 1.8l. •It has a top speed of 185km/hr. •The ground clearance is 180mm which is about 7.06 inches. •The fuel tank capacity is 60litres. The Toyota RunX has comprehensive baseline specifications which include: cup-holders, halogen headlamps, head impact protection trim and a height adjustable driver seat. Now who wouldn’t want that? The car has air-conditioning, integrated radio/CD player, back seat pockets and a trip computer. In addition it provides a luxury level of specification such as power windows both front and rear, power remote side mirrors, front fog lamps, leather steering wheel cover, driver and passenger airbags as well as sound system with six speakers. #Cynthia Odero MY HERALD JULY .25

Smokey Eyes. Below how to do a smokey eye with notes on how you can adjust it based on how natural or dramatic you want yours to be. Select three colors for your smokey eye look — one light, one dark, and one color that’s in between the two. This middle color will make the transition between the light and dark colors much smoother (as well as make blending much easier). Although I choose these three colors to create more of a classic black smokey eye look, you can also use these colors for a daytime look as well if you apply them lightly (like in the picture above, the colors don’t look very dark). For the most natural smokey eye, you can choose a cream, light brown, and medium brown as your three colors, for example. Before you create your smokey eye: •Apply foundation, if desired. Sometimes people prefer to apply foundation after their smokey eye is complete to clean up any fallout, but I always like putting my foundation on first. If you put your foundation on first and you get some eye shadow fallout on your cheeks, just pick up some loose face powder on a powder brush and sweep it off.
STEP 1
Apply an eye primer to your entire lid and highlight area You can use a colorless eye primer or one that is a color that’s similar to your skin tone. I recommend these types of primers if you’re doing a neutral daytime smokey eye. For really dramatic black smokey eyes, you could use a black base on your lower lid (like MAC Paint Pot in “Blackground”), but I’ve found that my everyday primer (MAC Paint Pot in “Soft Ochre”, which I’m using here) works well for just about any look I’m going for.
STEP 2
Apply the lightest eyeshadow as a wash.
STEP 3
Apply the medium eye shadow color to the center to outer part of your lower lid. This medium color will help transition the darkest color (that you will apply in the next step) with the lightest color you have as a wash.
STEP 5
Apply more of the lightest eye shadow on your highlight area to bring out your brow bone. I used a fluffy brush for a softer effect. Also pat more of the lightest color on your inner corner using a dense brush, (you can just use the other side of the brush you used in Step 3).
STEP 6
Line your upper lash line. For a more dramatic look, use a black liquid or gel liner and wing out the ends (like I did on the right). If you’re going for a daytime smokey eye, use a brown color to create your line.
STEP 7
If you’re wearing this during the day, don’t pack the color in as much so that it will be lighter than shown here.
Using a small angled brush, pick up some more of the darkest color and lightly apply it on your outer to center lower lash line. Then line your lower waterline with a black pencil if you’re going for a dramatic smokey eye. Otherwise, use a brown pencil (or skip this step altogether) for a daytime look. You can always quickly line your waterline at night!
STEP 4
STEP 8
Use a blending brush to apply the darkest eye shadow color on your outer V. Blend it out along your crease.

MY HERALD JULY .35
1.
Tell as a little about yourself? My name is Lucy Wanjiku Njenga 21 years old,a mentor to young girls aged 10 to 15 years, a facilitator with National Organization of Peer Educators, a Youth Mobilizer with Hivos and recently a graduate of an organization called Ashoka. Through Ashoka, I have managed to create employment opportunities and from this I have managed to start a restaurant that employs young mothers. In 2010 I was crowned Miss Dyms and Miss Koch: this afforded me an ambassadorial role for people in the slum settlements.
2.
What was your childhood like? I had a difficult childhood, am the first born in a family of three and the step child. This made me feel like an outsider and consequently I suffered low self- esteem. I couldn’t run away from home for repeated scolding, I wanted to fend for my siblings so I focused on completing school and getting employed. I always wanted to become a surgeon and then a nun, I am neither but I am happy all the way.
3.
How are the challenges that you faced growing up shaped your life? Taking responsibilities for others people’s mistakes has shaped my leadership skills and has made me humble. I 36. JULY MY HERALD
learned to be patient and persistent.
4.
You have faced some challenges in life, would you like to take us through that journey? I was desperate for love and felt like I would never find it. So in 2009 I decided to become a nun. I met a man who wanted to be a priest, we became close, he was handsome, soft spoken, kind and he made me believe in myself through his constant motivation. One thing to the other, our friendship grew into love. We dated and were having unprotected sex. I was lucky that I wasn’t pregnant until after my K.C.S.E exams and my pageants. When my father found out about our relationship, he forced him to take me in, both of us never had jobs and by then he was living at his brother’s place. He decided to move into a tiny room and took me in. The room had no electricity nor windows and a broken door, but I was happy despite all that and also sleeping hungry. I gave birth to a baby boy on June 29th 2011. I never had any clothes nor food to offer the baby but my mother came in and helped us out. My mother took me and the baby to live with her friend as my husband was looking for a job but 2months later he had found nothing and didn’t bother to come and take us home. We were thrown out but my mother rented a room for me and the
baby but it later got strenuous for her as she is a stay-at-home mother so I had no option but to go back home. I had a friend, who is my son’s god mother take us into their home and we were a part of their family instantly. In January 2012, my son got really ill and the doctors kept saying that it was an allergy reaction he was given medications but it only got worse. We took several tests and I was also encouraged to go for cervical cancer screening and HIV tests. To my shock I was found to be positive. I had been with only one man and as a result my son was also ill. I had mixed emotions and was very confused, unfortunately so, my son passed on 10days later. This was the hardest time of my life and it led to me reuniting with my husband, we started living together again and I was in so much pain to my sons loss but he didn’t show any remorse, we started fighting all the time and later on he started cheating and brought a woman to our home. The situation got worse still and I decided to leave. I joined Miss Fabulous beauty pageant and I was among the top 30/500 girls. During the pageant I publicly declare that I was positive and since then my life changed for the better. It had a purpose. MY HERALD JUNE -JULY 36

Did you have any role models? If so who? Yes, Ben Carson due to his determination, hard work and faith, Wangari Maathai who fought for what she believed and Oprah Winfrey who worked hard to the top and is admired by most women despite being from a humble background and also abused.
6.
You seem to enjoy what you do, tell us what motivates you? I always wanted to be heard and to be encouraged and most importantly wanted to have some hope and I had to find these out on my own. This is my motivation to do what I do.
7.
Are you in a relationship, or married? No, when you tell a man your status, they disappear like it’s a plague and the ones who stay, think you are desperate. I never settle for less than I deserve and if you don’t treat me right I have the right to leave and not look back.
8.
What are your future plans? Go back to school and study guidance and counseling, community development and sign language. I also want to expand the restaurant and create more employment opportunities.

1.
Tell us a little about Nanaa? Sara Nanaa is a last born in a family of 4,2boys and 2 girls, Nanaa is a simple down to earth lady but at the same time a go getter, when I set my mind to doing anything I can never deter from it until I achieve what I have set my mind to.
2.
What was your childhood like? I was born in Coast where my dad used to work but later moved to Nairobi as my mother got ill. On school holidays we would go to Coast to visit my dad. My childhood was very interesting I had very loving and encouraging parents but due to unfortunate circumstances, they separated and that is when life took a different twist for not only me but my siblings too. However, these did not affect our education but the ups and downs were too much. We had a very responsible brother who really took care of us when my mother had to work late hours in order to provide proper basic needs for us since we were staying with her most of the time as opposed to my dad. I loved singing and imitating singers and my mum listened to a lot of country music and I came to love it till now. She always listened and encouraged me. Eventually I had to go to a boarding school in class 5 in Western Kenya and I literally begged my mum to go, eventually I joined high school at Friends School Kaimosi. I was in practically all the curriculum activities and I must say not only did boarding school teach me to be independent but it also grew my talent of arts.
3.
What was your ambition growing up? As a child ambition keeps fluctuating, you want to be a pilot then you realize you are poor in physics, you decide on Neurosurgeon then realize it entails a lot. I came to realize that I loved working with people and I realized that a Hospital was the place to be and the crazy ideas I had was I would treat patients sing to them, have fun and make hospitals a hospitable place. 4.
How was your teenage life, did you suffer from identity crisis like many teenagers do? Of course I did, it reaches a point in life where confusion comes in and you are not even sure of what you are doing, but I really had mentors who when I did anything wrong I would not shy to consult and try to mend my ways.
5.
What are the challenges that have shaped your current life? Seeing my mum work extra hard to take care of four kids When my parents separated our lives changed from our living surroundings to the schools we attended. This made me strong and I decided on boarding school which made me very independent.
6.
How did you realize you are set on the path you are on now? I loved working with people sharing ideas and whatever small project we did that came to life made me so happy, that is when I knew that that was the path I was to focus on.
7.
Where did it all start? I was the chairlady of law club in high school, Clarion an organization that was spearheading the empowerment of the girl child gave an essay writing challenge in Eastern province for schools that had law clubs and I emerged the winner, this gave me the zeal to work towards empowering the girl child inform of plays, choral verse, skits and songs. My coordinator Tr.Mrs Mumo R.M and my head-teacher were very supportive.
8.
What inspired you to do what you are doing currently? I was privileged to learn in different parts of Kenya and I interacted with the many people and in the process due to the many activities I was involved in I could see the different needs of various communities and vowed to create an impact in different parts of Kenya.
9.
Who is your role model? I would love to mention someone big in the art industry but my mother is my biggest role model. She has encouraged me through and through my whole life, when I felt I was down she said kept telling me that I am a winner and will make it. She sacrificed all her life for us. 40. JULY MY HERALD

.What was your turning point in your career and what projects have you worked on? After high school I joined JKUAT and pursued clinical medicine in HIV and AIDS management, but after my internship at Thika District hospital it was that I wanted to work in community projects and also help the youth in nurturing talent so I told my mum I want to work with NGOS and community projects and she gave me a go ahead. My first job ever was at Eastern Africa Regional Youth Network(EARYN)an NGO which was working in collaboration with the Provincial Director of Education(PDE,S) office in Nairobi and their main aim was to curb the intake of drugs and substance abuse that had grown rampant in schools. The project really created a major impact and I was honored to work with the likes of David Ogot.Later I worked with Village of Hope(VOH) a home for kids with special needs and it prompted me to start a youth movement in Joska to sensitize the parents around not to hide their children and lock them up but bring them out to be assisted since most of the women were single and had no
stable jobs. We created a training forum and taught them how to make ornaments using beads which they could sell and earn aliving, meanwhile their children were receiving therapy. I also volunteered for Hope for Orphans and Rescued Centre which was run by a lady called Christine Wambui which I still do to date.In 2012 I became a partner in Rona Opti Media Solutions an events company that was geared towards donating part of its events proceeds to a charitable organization. The birth of Ultimate Convergence Of the “Singles” grew as time went by. As for my music career, each home and center I worked for made me come up with songs in regards to the experiences I got from the places. I currently have an 8 track song album. My music is at www.reverbnation.com./nanaa

.You seem to enjoy what you do, tell us what motivates you? Working with the vulnerable members of the society is very fulfilling. I love to work with the youth to nurture talent and inspire them, there is great joy in seeing projects complete and know-
ing it will change a community in one way or another. My greatest motivation though, is my family and friends through their support.
12
.Share with us something we don’t know about Nanaa? I hate saying these but Nanaa is the worst spend thrift, I am extravagant but slowly trying to get help (laughing). Shoegasm is my feeling.
13
.Are you in seeing someone? No, I am single I believe everything has its own time.
14
.What are your future plans? To be a young achiever who gears on entertainment fused with education through my company Diacrystal and through events.

y my pens words I tend to conclude that acting is the most enjoyable career ever! One gets to adapt to quite a wide range of roles with lots of ease and gets away with it. The conception of the idea “Rediculous” the program by the trio Walter Mongare, KJ and Tony Njuguna was the beginning of fresh breath of talents in the arts industry. Contentious vices manifested by politicians were acted out and even their characters exaggerated to bring out their greediness, shrewdness and even cunning characters that is synonymous with them. Where else can an average kenyan become President of a country in a split second if not acting? Where else can one become a top cop without going through a training school or a military base. Acting is the only avenue for one to be all that with talent of course. It all starts after one realizes that they have an urge for acting and choose to explore it, or when one is discovered in schools drama festivals, church and community groupings. For one to plunge into mainstream theatre where professionalism is exhibited one needs to attend auditions. Most
producers uphold ‘Artistic Finnese’ as their motto and as an actor one must show that they are ready to bring their “A” game to the production. Roles are always competitive and failure to impress at the auditions leads to an early disqualification. At auditions talent is sorted out from real actors to wannabe actors. Before an audition is held information is passed earlier to the general public where the interested parties purpose to attend. The most commonly used media for passinginformation is via posters , electronic media advertisement and lately social media including facebook, twitter have been embraced too.advertisement and lately social media including facebook, twitter have been embraced too. Even though auditions attract quite a multitude, the production cuts down the number to fit their demand. Everyone who arrives for auditions ON TIME and meets the basic requirements outlined in the posters must be auditioned to do away with speculations of bias and will. Even though auditions attract quite a multitude, the production cuts down the number to fit their demand. Everyone who arrives for auditions ON TIME and meets the basic requirements outlined in the posters must be auditioned to do away with speculations of bias and will. There are basics to be considered when attending an audition. Lots of actors fall for early disqualifications by missing basic information on the advertisement issued. After getting wind of an audition
one needs to read the information given and inquire where necessary if at all they do not understand. Most auditions advertising materials have got contacts at the bottom of the info. In the auditions info the production will include basic information that the auditionee ought to have . These will sometimes include; • • • • •
An I.D Dress code Punctuality/time Venue Age bracket.
Before attending one should ensure that they meet the basic requirements to avoid time wastage and early embarrassments.Upon arrival get briefing will be provided by the responsible party. One waits for their turn with the directors or panel. Once inside exhibit top notch confidence but do not over do it for it might put the panel off. One should take instructions and avoid repeating a question already poised at them. I had an incident where an actor was told “you can sing now “ then they asked “so i can sing now?” this is annoying if not boring and maybe your highway to a disqualification. Audibility One must be audible. No one will be ready to strain their ears to get whatever you are saying. Be articulate and let your words come out as clearly as possible. Some words sound the same and only articulation will make it easy for one to know whatever you mean. Accent Don’t force an accent that you are not comfortable with. Unless asked to do a British or an American accent, please do not deafen the panel with that. You will be struck out. There are ways that the panel does its natural selection and one should realize not meeting their criteria does not mean they can not act. Some of the things they consider include: • Body size • Voice command • Complexion • Height • Confidence

eejaying is an art that has transitioned over the years and its evolution is not one to be doubted. Software now enables almost unlimited creative control over music allowing disc jockeys today to completely deconstruct songs live. Dj Kaytrixx has surprised many by being an exceptional dj at a very young age. He answers questions that puts a lot into perspective.
1. 2.
If you were not a disc jockey what would you be? I would have been an engineer or a businessman.
Does a person go to school to be a dj? and what schools are these? It wholly depends on your desire to be a disc jockey and how quick a learner you are. I never went to any dj-ing school I picked it up along the way. The schools that teach one how to be a dj include Homeboyz which has produced some good djs.
3.
When it comes to management is it easy to get someone to manage you as a brand or is it preferable to manage oneself? It depends on how much money one is making. If you are able to afford one it is good as you can focus on making your skills better as a dj. As a beginner it is ideal to manage yourself as you learn from your mistakes and learn your weaknesses and strengths.
4.
What are the downfalls of being a disc jockey? There are quite a number. One is not having a plan when it comes to being a disc jockey. It is a career like any other and should be approached with all seriousness. Another downfall is being careless with the money you make as a dj. The industry requires you to have time for yourself especially if you are one with a crazy schedule like mine, getting carried away by fame, and not knowing how to relate with clients. As a dj you must develop a hard skin so that the backlash that may come with the job does not affect you as much.
5.
What are the perks of being a dj? They are endless. The one that really hits home with me is making people you have never met dance to your music and watching them enjoy the experience.
6.
Who is Kaytrixx? A chilled out person, serial gamer who loves cooking, funny, sport fanatic and most importantly loves his work. My vision is to be one of the best international djs that Kenya has to offer. I also dabble in apparel. I have a clothing line by the name of Hangover_254 which is doing quite well and hopefully will be a household name all over.

1. 2.
Describe yourself in 5 words? I am a blessed girl.
Talk me through your worst experience as a performer and how you deal with the situation. There’s a time I got on stage at a local university and during my performance a group of girls started screaming another artist’ name to spite me cause one of them was the sister. I just did my thing finished my set, and went home.
3.
Kenya v/s Tz: Betweenthese two places wheredo you prefer to performand why? That’s a trick question lol. I enjoy both. I get a lot of love from bothcountries, the first being my home and the later being my other home. We support each other in the EA, especially in the music industry.
4.
How do you prep for the shows? I’m a meticulous one so I start my preparation for a givenshow say a week to the day. If I have back up dancers we prepare our set together and see what interesting things to do on the day. On the day itself I/we make it to the venue as per the client’s requirement and go through our set if and need be. We discuss with the DJ at the venueabout any technical requirements and hit the stage as per the program.
5.
When do we get our hands on g’s and f’s? what motivated youto start your line of headphones? I’m really working on hard to see that I get everything done as soon as possible. What I can say is that music and ambition motivated me to start this line. A young innovator called Morris Mbetsa approached me with the idea to get this going and I
thought it was brilliant if he could actually get it done. So far we are learning a lot and hoping we’ll get stuff out soon.
6.
To wind up, how do you maintain relevance in the industry? I just keep doing what I’m doing and remember that just because I’m not the best singer in the world doesn’t mean I shouldn’t stop trying to be. Practice makes perfect.

Changes Pub is an amazing chill out spot and with more than 3000 likes on Facebook and a following of more than 1000 on twitter, it was more than worth it to look forward to the night. I went through their page and as the name suggests they have a diverse selection of Dj’s spinning at the club each day. From Dj Crème, Dj Wesley, Dj Mista T to Dj Fresh and - not forgetting the Dj of the night who was to make an appearance- Dj Kaytrixx. So with that I knew that my treat would be one to tell.
Anyway we found a spot on the V.I.P section and took our seats. It took approximately 5mins to have the bartender come to our rescue. We ordered the shots of-course and within minutes we all had our drinks in hand. Apparently Changes club is very diverse and changing in its drink menu as well as its clientele, each day has a separate musical journey event slotted and also separate drink menu accordingly. I think this is a way of marketing that is obviously working for the club itself.
We got ready and at around 10:00pm we got on our way. At the entrance of the club, there was a banner with Changes all over it and we were lured to
So for ‘Platinum Thursday’ as the night was dubbed, below is the basic drink menu;
46. JULY MY HERALD
As we stepped in, I got an amazing feel of the club itself, from comfortable red lounge seats on the ground floor and the 1st floor to brilliant white amazing lounge seats on the V.I.P section. The crowd was so hyped you would think we had some international artist performing.
• Ameson, JW, Vodka, Tequila go for100/- a tot • Zappa is 50/- a tot. • Beers is 150/- a bottle • 1 bottle of wine is 1000/- and 2 for 1500/• For the Shisha fanatics, it goes for 600/This snippet is truly a catch and that’s why the club was so jam packed other than for the music of course. The club had an in-house photographer taking photos of people in the life of the party but this comes optional. We got to partying and by the time we were leaving, around 2am, my friends were so wasted and I, I was taken on a musical journey around Africa and all around the world, not to forget the fact that I love to dance, my feet were hurting so badly. Honestly I did not want to leave but it was time. Changes Club is diverse and true to its name, it changes, from the music, the drink menu to the Dj selection. I was sure to hit the club again on Friday for Epic Fridays with Dj Crème De la Crème.

Gadgets Nokia Lumia 920 The Nokia Lumia 920 is now a smartphone ready to compete with industry leaders like the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4. Though Nokia Lumia 920 usually gets the short end of the stick, you might be surprised by how close some of the features and specs really are, compared to the iPhone 5. First let’s look at the screen. The Lumia 920 has a 4.5 inch screen (1280 x 768 resolution) while the iPhone 5 has a 4 inch widescreen Multi-Touch Retina display. While the half inch difference doesn’t seem like much, the Lumia 920 could come in handy when handling some more complex multi-media tasks.
Iphone 5 What about the processor? The Lumia 920 operates on Windows Phone 8 and boasts a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip. The iPhone 5 runs on iOS and has a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor under the hood. Another reason why the Lumia 920 is underrated. It has a more efficient processor than the iPhone 5! The Nokia Lumia 920 has a 8.7 megapixel rear facing camera and uses optical instead of electronic stabilization. Again the Lumia 920 wins again beating out the iPhone 5’s 8 megapixel camera [that supports LED flash, auto focus, and HD video recording]. Just face it the Nokia Lumia 920 is an excellent phone on paper. Sure it’s all about the user experience. But when it comes to specs and features the Nokia Lumia stands toe to toe with industry leading smartphones like the Apple iPhone 5.

The Bottom Line An action-packed mainstreaming of a more ambitious book. Release Date June 21, 2013 Director Marc Forster Cast Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos
A flexible metaphor for all manner of social, cultural and political maladies, the zombie genre has, over the decades, been employed as an analogue for everything from the U.S. occupation of Haiti (1932’s Bela Lugosi starrer “White Zombie”) to the upheaval of the Vietnam/civil rights era (“Night of the Living Dead”) and the bio-panics of the late 20th century (“28 Days Later,” “Resident Evil”). Significantly expanding the claustrophobic geography of most zombie pics, the aptly titled “World War Z” doesn’t have a particular polemical axe to grind so much as it seeks to imagine how the world’s ideologically disparate peoples and governments would respond if great masses of the populi did suddenly turn into rabid, flesh-eating beasties. In what may be taken as an affront by the America First crowd, the old U.S. of A. descends into chaos pretty early on, while the two nations best equipped for the coming onslaught turn out to be Israel and North Korea the former by building an enormous wall, the latter by extracting the teeth of its entire population. Office Ettiquette The office is already a high stress place for many individuals, Having to deal with insensitive colleagues at this point is something we have to learn and master like an art. As human beings, We mostly use the assumption technique hoping that one day our minds will block of that colleague and we will never have to think about them anymore. Some of us even go a step further and wish that something tragic like death happens to them so that they remain in peace, and when desperate situations call for desperate measures we start plotting on how we can get them fired. As a smart employee, one shouldn’t resort to any of the tactics above in dealing with this kind of situation. Examine yourself before judging your colleague, this will help you gain some introspection and realize that you might actually be contributing to the problem in one way or the other. The most precise way of knowing vital information about yourself is through a self assessment because the office space creates a space where by your best and worst come into play as your colleagues either point out the flaws in you or amplify them. Self awareness will enable you to deal with conflict more rationally. Be patient with difficult colleagues especially when a conflict arises. Talking back to someone when they are only accelerates their anger and the angrier they get the more they will be unreasonable and the more the situation will be difficult for you. Allow your colleague to air their complaints while trying to stay calm and unemotional. Listen carefully and even if you can jot down the key points of their argument, this will show them that you care and thus will voluntary calm their nerves. Invest in developing your career. This will leave less room and energy to concentrate on the troublesome colleague. Always include your managers on any compliment emails or letters you receive and always update your line manager on each progress you make so that they are aware of the milestones and achievements as this will increase your performance rating and help you outshine your colleagues.

Stretching
FITNESS
#Maureen Bandari Stretching is a simple exercise involving the flexing of various body muscles to improve the muscle’s elasticity.you might not use a lot of energy but it is one of the ways to stay flexible, prevent injury, relax muscles, increase mental and physical relaxation, reduce muscular soreness and improve one’s performance.you can stretch literally anywhere from the comfort of your home to the office and of course,at the gym. This however depends on the type of stretch you are doing
How do you go about stretching you may ask? Well, in as much as there are a million and one muscles in the body,MAUREEN BANDARI brings you a few common stretches to keep you going
1.Quadriceps stretch Stand up and pull your leg backwards. hold it for a few seconds repeat the same on the other leg.
2.Lower back stretch Lie back on your mat bring one leg to your chest hold that for a few seconds do the same with the other leg.
If you are experiencing some form of pain before or during stretching, then it is important that you get to know the cause of the pain.once you know that,it becomes easier to know which stretches to do or even whether you are able to do any at all. If you stretch properly, you should not be sore the day after you have stretched. If you are, then it may be an indication that you are overstretching and that you need to go easier on your muscles by reducing the intensity of some (or all)of the stretches you perform. Overstretching will simply increase the time it takes for you to gain greater flexibility. This is because it takes time for the damaged muscles to repair themselves, and to offer you the same flexibility as before they were injured.
3.Hamstring stretch Sit on the floor and put one leg out reach for it and hold as much as you can do the same for the other leg and finally for both legswhenever you feel something around the thigh and calf region always means you are doing it right.
Always stretch out after a work out and avoid under stretching by ensuring whatever you do,do the same on the opposite side.stretches work best after a warm up,not before.
4.full legs stretch Lay flat on your back and extend your leg out.Grab the back of your thigh and Pull your leg towards your face. hold that for as long as you can
6.Reach up with your right arm. Bend your right elbow and put your forearm down behind your head and between your shoulder blades.Reach up and grab your right elbow with your opposite arm.Pull your elbow toward your head.
52. JULY MY HERALD
All manner of exercise need a source of energy to replace the one that has been used. After a good work out that ends in a few stretches, indulge in cereals for breakfast like cornflakes and wheetabix with a bowl of milk.add a banana or apple for a complete healthy breakfast.
7.scapulae stretch Extend your arms in front of you. Join both hands together and cross fingers. Push your arms further and try to push your scapulae in opposite direction
5.shoulder stretch Put your arm on your chest.Grab your forearm with the opposite arm.Pull your arm until you feel your shoulder being stretched. Push the arm you are stretching the opposite way in order to contract the muscle if you feel that your chest is stretching instead of your shoulder
8.neck stretch Incline your head forward, but do not roll your head from side to side--this is dangerous. Instead, stretch your neck to the left, right, forward and back, but always return to center firstTilt your head with ear toward shoulder, incline your head backward and roll your head from left to right, then right to left in a 30 degree motion.Be sure that while your head is tilted back, you keep your jaw relaxed and even let your mouth fall open just a bit.
BODY & SOUL Sex Q: A:
I’ve noticed a tiny bit of white discharge from my nipples, but I don’t have a baby. Does this mean I’m pregnant?
You could be. This is because some women notice clear discharge in the beginning of a pregnancy, and a watery, milky fluid during later stages. However, If you’ve never had kids and there’s no reason to think you’re pregnant, You should have your gynecologist take a look at it, especially if it becomes colored or bloody. “New discharge is always worth a check up. This could be a sign of a hormonal imbalance, excessive stimulation or, in some cases, a small, often being tumor in the pituitary gland in the brain.
Nutrition Q: A:
How many vegetables, fruits, and whole grain products do I need to get enough fiber each day?
Most adult women should aim for over 20 grams of fiber a day while men should take over 30 grams. You can easily achieve 30 grams of fiber each day by eating three servings of vegetables, three servings of fruit, two servings of whole grain foods, and one serving of legumes, such as lentils, kidney, black, and lima beans. To achieve 35 grams of fiber, eat four servings of vegetables, four servings of fruit, four servings of whole grain foods, and one serving of legumes. Note on serving sizes: One serving of fruit is one whole, medium-sized fruit or ½ cup of fruit; one serving of vegetables is 1 cup of raw vegetables or ½ cup cooked vegetables; 1 serving of whole grain food; ½ cup cooked whole wheat pasta or cereal (such as old-wheetabix), or one slice of whole wheat bread; 1 serving of legumes is ½ cup cooked lentils or beans. #Herald

MEN} ENDANGERED? Single
Not so single .....on self stimulation
This is one of the most controversial topics of all times. I asked several people about it and all had different opinions;
“
• A 27year old young man said “What would a girl lack for her to indulge in that”. • Some three 20-25 year old guys said “I would like a girl who will do that as I watch….” they basically love some spice and adventure. • Most women said when I asked the question of would they indulge, “I would be glad to, sometimes you just need to ex plore yourself and what makes you tick…. ” while other women wouldn’t hear any of it, the thought of it is just unnerving.
“
This is a soft why a single woman once indulged in self-love.
“I had been under so much pressure lately from work and from what life handed me and I wanted to have a relaxing Saturday night with a book and some wine. I had heard about the book Fifty Shades of Grey and decided why not buy it and indulge as the reviews it got were a pretty much to-buy book, they are even making it into a movie. I bought the book and got to read the synopsis and the book is about sex, all the realms of sex so to speak. I went to home later that evening and decided a hot shower will do me good. Afterwards I got to bed, sat down and with my glass in hand I started reading, the book is very sensual and I got hooked immediately, I continued reading it and it got to a point where I started picturing myself in the sexual scenes the book was describing. My body started feeling hot, my breathing started altering…basically I started getting sexually aroused. I wanted a man to touch me, to kiss me, to sex my body up like it was the only one on earth. I couldn’t stop reading the book, I kept turning the pages and every-time I got to a sex scene, my body responded even more. The scene that got me on the edge was Christian describing to Anna how she can get herself to cloud nine. I got carried away, I started touching my breasts, caressing my nipples and I liked how my body felt, how it responded to the touch. I put my index finger in my mouth and wet it a little, took it back to my nipple and continued touching it. I moved my hand slowly down my belly and started playing with my navel, moved it further down to my veneris mons and got further down and started playing with my clitoris. All that was on my mind was an encounter I had with one Mr. Ice. I got to cloud nine and the feeling was amazing. I felt so relaxed and all the stress I had from work, to my personal life and what nature handed me had all gone. The book had put me in the mood and I finished the rest combined with my sexual memories of a previous encounter.” *anonymous.

Self love is a sensual stimulation of self in order to gain extreme pleasure through the use of fingers, adult toys or objects we use on our day to day lives. Studies show that there are numerous psychological and medical merits of self play. A medical research showed that 95% of males and 89% of females with stable partners engage in self stimulation, this does mean that they do not get satisfied by their partners but rather that they enjoy loving themselves as well as their partners. It is not only about feeling good but about relieving oneself from sensual tension that may build overtime. Being in a relationship, sometimes self love can be misunderstood by a partner depending with their background and traditions. While some men may be okay and even excited by observing their women touching and feeling themselves, Some men loathe the act and view it as a form of dissatisfaction on the woman’s side. My friend’s husband one’s had a huge fight with her because he found her touching herself and stimulating herself after being woke up by the soft sweet moans she was releasing as an effect of how good she was feeling. His argument was that she insulted him by using her fingers to gain pleasure while he was sleeping besides her! Her answer was of course that he does not do enough foreplay before having sex and that she never reaches orgasm by intercouse (A story for another day). While my friend’s case is common in many couples situations, It is not the case in some relationship where both partners appreciate and even encourage self love. Some partners even go as far as buying their partners toys for adult pleasure. I will confess that i fall into this category and feel a little guilty about it. This is not an issue that one wake’s up one day and comfortable with, It is something learned over time and takes time to understand. Statistics show that more than a third of women in stable relationships fake orgasm because their partners are preoccupied with wanting to have sex and get done with it. They do this without understanding that a woman’s body must be tuned like a radio in order for her to gain maximal pleasure, A few number of men who master this art are the one’s who fully satisfy their women. This women will even go an extra mile to get their partner a lovely little toy that she can even carry in their bag. The method of self pleasure depends in the woman and may vary depending on the situation and place. While some women may prefer using their fingers or daily objects, Some women choose to spend hundreds of dollars on high end dildos. A number of women even have a collection of toys with assigned mens names to them, this collection is usually comprised of different shapes and sizes and level of activity. From smooth and tender Nick to hard and rough Ted and they are assigned different days of the week and even might be used according to moods. This come in handy especially for women who’s partners travel frequently or for couples who get aroused by kinky stuff.

PROSTRATE
Cancer
According to the Free Medical Dictionary by Farlex, prostate cancer is defined as a disease in which cells in the prostate gland become abnormal and start to grow uncontrollably forming tumors. It is also described as a malignancy of one of the major male sex glands. Fact: A tumor in the prostate interferes with proper control of the bladder and normal sexual functioning. Fact: Prostate cancer is curable when detected early. www.cancer.org gives a detailed account of some of the risk factors that have a role in the occurrence of prostate cancer. Many people with one or more risk factors never get cancer, while others who get cancer may have had few or no known risk factors. The website states that prostate cancer may not be fully understood but researchers have found several factors that might change the risk of getting it. For some of these factors, the link to prostate cancer risk is not yet clear.
According to the New York Times website some symptoms of prostate cancer include: • Delayed or slow start of urinary stream • Dribbling or leakage of urine especially after urinating • Slow urinary stream • Blood in the urine or semen • Straining when urinating or not being able to drain all of the urine • Bone pain or tenderness, most often in the lower back and pelvic bones (only when the cancer has spread). www.cancer.org also suggests options for treatment for men with prostate cancer. These methods include: • Expectant management or active surveillance • Surgery • Radiation therapy • Cryosurgery • Hormone therapy • Chemotherapy • Vaccine therapy These treatments are generally used one at a time, though in some cases more than one may be used.
•Age- prostate cancer is rare in men younger than the age of forty. The chances increase however after the age of fifty. •Family history- it may run in some families suggesting it may be inherited or genetic. The risk is much higher for men with several affected relatives. •Genes- inherited gene changes that seem to raise prostate cancer risk but may account for only a small number of cases overall. Genetic testing for most of these gene changes is not yet available. •Diet- the exact role of diet is not clear but factors have been studied. These include high consumption of red meat or high fat dairy products which appear to contribute to a slightly higher chance of getting prostate cancer. •Obesity- some studies have found that obese men have a lower risk of getting a low grade form of the disease, but a higher risk of getting more aggressive prostate cancer. •Vasectomy- some earlier studies had suggested that men who have had a vasectomy (minor surgery to make men infertile) - especially those younger than 35 at the time of the procedure- may have a slightly increased risk for prostate cancer. Fear of an increased risk of prostate cancer should not be a reason to avoid a vasectomy. #Herald
