A QUICK GUIDE TO
VALENCIA THE MAGNIFICENT GOTHIC cathedral and the lavish mercantile hall La Lonja de la Seda in Valencia’s Old Town are testament to its heyday in the 15th century when it was one of Europe’s major cultural and economic centres. In 1957, disaster struck when the River Túria burst its banks, almost destroying the city’s grand, architectural heritage. When the huge restoration project got under way, the local council came up with an ingenious plan to prevent more flooding, which ultimately led to Valencia’s second wave of vernacular architecture – large-scale futuristic designs. The river was diverted and its dried-out riverbed converted into Jardines del Túria, a lush ribbon of parkland designed by several landscape architects into zones dedicated to football, tennis, athletics and volleyball. The jewel in the crown of this radical, urban
planning project was offered to Valencia’s most high-profile native, the internationally acclaimed architect Santiago Calatrava. At the mouth of the river he has created La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (the City of Arts and Sciences, cac.es), a cluster of futuristic buildings offering attractions and educational entertainment for all the family. L’Oceanogràfic is the largest aquarium in Europe with 500 species of sharks, seals, stingrays and water birds, crowned by two Jetsons-style buildings resembling giant waterlilies. The Príncipe Felipe Science Museum forms the spine of the complex and hosts interactive and tactile exhibitions designed for children. Its extraordinary façade is inspired by the skeletons of dinosaurs and at the back, a cascade of glass mimics a waterfall. Opposite is l’Umbracle, a landscaped promenade and sculpture park enclosed by a cagelike roof which hosts parties in the summer months (umbracleterraza. com). The Hemisfèric building seems to float in the centre of a 7,300m2 ornamental pool and at night the reflection of its ovoid
roof and the sphere that houses its IMAX cinema and planetarium resemble a giant eye. The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía opera house is the most iconic structure of all, presiding over its neighbours like an aerodynamic helmet from cult virtual-reality film Tron. comunitatvalenciana.com BARCELO VALENCIA
Located just across the road from La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, the four-star Barceló Valencia is the perfect base for exploring this extraordinary complex. Some of the 187 rooms and the rooftop terrace (a popular venue for wedding receptions and parties) look straight out onto the spectacular opera house, and sleek interiors reference Calatrava’s space-aged hub. Make the most of the excellent buffet breakfast and feast on local and Mediterranean dishes in El Senyoret restaurant or El Gotet lobby bar. Then work off those calories on the treadmills in the fitness room while lapping up the amazing views, followed by a relaxing massage, sauna or soak in the Jacuzzi.
