This is a computational studio primarily focused on the principles and applications of computer graphics, as well as how to integrate these technologies with real-world environments.
[ Form and Logic ]
The purpose of the class is to explore how AI tools can enhance the design process. This project began with an abstract concept— exploring a culture of interest. Our goal is to design a pavilion informed by an analysis of this culture using large language models and image-sampling tools. The pavilion's form is shaped by patterns derived from pixel-based training.
[ Sampling Japanese Images ]
Drawing from our chosen culture, we utilize LLM and image models to analyze its characteristics through a computer graphics approach. By training these models, we aim to capture and interpret the unique traits of the culture visually.
[ Generate Geometries out of Japanese-images Model ]
Using our trained model, we experiment with generated geometries to enhance the alignment between form and cultural essence. The goal is to optimize the resemblance between the pavilion's shape and the distinctive traits of the culture.
[ Computer-Graphic Techniques / jpg to meshes ]
The process focuses on transforming images into shapes and meshes by using depth maps and Gaussian-blurred topology to create a foundational model form.

In the first stage, select specific articles and books to train our language model, compare it with large public language models, and visualize and analyze the differences.
Text Model

We compiled and processed the text from selected books for training. By vectorizing all the words based on their characters and collocations, we could analyze the relationships and contextual usage of Japanese people.
In the second stage, use the language model to select an abstract theme and build our own image sample model based on this theme.
In the third stage, test our massively generated geometric shapes against the image sample model.

Based on the analysis of two different language models, we can augment the model we want to train. The next step is to connect the language model to the image sampling model. By using labeling and tagging, we can establish a connection between these two models.
I used 400 images for each concept for training the model. This will make it analyze the character of different concept.

The process emphasizes the logical and technical methods of transforming images into shapes and meshes. Essentially, there are two main approaches: the first is converting a depth map into a mesh, and the second involves applying Gaussian blur to topological (actual environmental) data. Through these methods, we can create the foundational form of the model based on our analysis of the shapes.

▉Structure Iterations_
[ From Cave to Flat form ]
The project also highly considered the structure. I created several structural iterations and then input them into the sampling model to see how they fit. In the end, I found that the cave-like structure and the flat one with straight pillars represented the most extreme poles of the model. The transition between these structures can be more diverse, and I also want them to change with elegance.

The openings are designed to face specific scenes.
As people go deeper, the pavilion becomes more enclosed, creating a sense of being wrapped up.

In this area, the cave is cut by straight lines, revealing a thin shell that appears lightweight with multiple openings, enhancing its transparency.

As it approaches the big lawn, the space becomes more open.
The vault-like structure transitions into a flat and broad area, merging seamlessly with the lawn.

I tried to construct an architectural system that would vary with the periodic cycle of nature.
Architecture usually serves as a boundary that separates nature and people. However, it could also be like a layer of skin, through which people can sense mild wind, sunshine, moonlight, and other natural elements.
With the data collected in recent years and the digital model, I attempted to reconnect people and nature through architecture, making architecture no longer a divider but a way that people and nature can feel each other and coexist.
[ Tide, Moon, and the Cinema ]
As the tide goes up, water flows into the man-made structure, holding up the volume, stretching out the canopy, and the moon would appear right in the middle of the night sky.
I created an architectural system. However, the walkway and lighting are controlled by nature. A cinema varies with daily lunar phases and tide levels.
Capture the movement of nature, and reconnect people with these natural cycles. That is the intention of my thesis project.

How people, architecture, and nature interact with each other became the core issue of my thesis project.

▇ Observation / Tidal Cycle
Kaohsiung is a city famous for its harbor and large-scale industry. Because of the unhealthy development, there is open land scattered along the port.
In an open land surrounded by towers and mega infrastructure, the whole place was strengthened by the voice of the tide and the open sky. Therefore, I started to record those natural elements with larger scales, like the tide, wind, sun, and moon, trying to connect these things with people by architecture.

In order to balance the cinema and activate the movements, anchors are set at both the bottom of the pillars and the cinema. During the period of low tide, the canopy will be closed. And the walkway will open up and connect to the emerging walkway below so that people can walk all the way down to the port.

As the tide goes up, the volume will also slowly goes up, the buoyant force will stretch out the canopy by pulling the rope. And the walkway facing the river will slowly close.
▇ Plan of Rope System
There are 8 pillars (4 groups) connected to the system. Each group controls the movement in 1 direction.

To connect a floating cinema to pillars, I started with the frame and structure itself since the cinema has to be water-proofing and moveable at the same time.
I separated the pillars and the water-proofing layer by 25 cm and used anchor and rope system to reconnect them.
There are two different layers of frames. One is for the water-proofing system (pipes and canvas), and the other one is for the structural system (beams and walls).
I chose canvas as the water-proofing material because of the tradition of water lanterns. I want the cinema can be light and soft, like a lantern floating on water.

As the tide gets low, the pier would be very close to Love river.

[ About the Competition ]
This is a competition project for renovating a wasted park that used to be the city center ( A roundabout in front of the city hall )
As political power changes with time, the park has always been a place to advocate for the governor. The statues and propaganda vary from the Japanese government to the ROC government. Moreover, there are even discussions about whether to replace the existing statue with another statue for victims of the 228 accident. In fact, that is the main reason for having this competition. However, my project is totally against this idea.
[ The spirit of "Liberty Park" ]
What is the spirit of the park that is named after the victims of the 228 accidents ?
They sacrificed their lives for freedom. What they really want is not a statue with their names on it but a society where everyone can live freely and safely. Therefore, in my opinion, a park that everyone can access and use freely would be more like "228 Liberty Park".
[ Preserve the "circle" and make it a free park ]
By preserving the circle, not only do I try to keep the memories, but I also want to make good use of the geometric trait. Make it a park with no blind spots so that everyone can be free and safe when they're using the park.

In 1924, after setting up the city hall, the Japanese government decided to renovate the current road system here so that it can better handle heavier traffic. They constructed the roundabout next to the city hall in 1930.
As Japan lost WW2, the ROC government took over Taiwan. Instead of rebuilding a new system, they decided to use the Japanese one. The city hall and roundabout were still used until the 1980s. However, they replace the statue of the Japanese president with the statue of the ROC president.
In 1980, the roundabout and the nearby area were planned as "228 liberty park" today.

During the Japanese dominance period, roads and harbors were built to support those wars in South Asia. At that time, Kaohsiung was the center of transportation and storage.

Moreover, to show authority, the Japanese government placed statues on major spots in the city like plazas, roundabouts, and city halls. Especially on roundabouts, since the concept was newly imported from Europe, they were considered to be visual centers for propaganda and political advertisement.

[ Make the park availible for everyone. ]

▍[ Design Strategy ]
Step1. Preserve the circle, and make it a park that highlights its center area.
Step2. Replace the statue with "playground" "basketball court" and functions that everyone can use.
Step3. Create layers and routes so that everyone can use the park freely without inconvenience.
I tried to create a park with no "blind spot" so that children, students, and residents can use the park freely. By preserving the "circle", (the visual center) everyone can see each other easily making it a park where everyone is watching after everyone.
Step1. Step2. Step3.
▇ New Park
_ Roundabout
_ Circle
_ Centric Playground
In my opinion, the center of this park is the most important idea of this project. It symbolizes the core spirit of the park. Therefore, I replace the statue with an isolated playground for children so that they won't lose their way. And then I put an athletic track surrounding the playground. By doing so, when people go jogging or walking, they can easily watch after the kids, making it a playground with no blind spot.
On the GF layer, I left it almost empty because there are a lot of people walking through this park every day. It would be really bothering for both pedestrians and people who come here to exercise if I put those facilities on the ground floor.
I open up a big patio according to the circle so that people can see children playing from afar.

The park locates nearby the city hall and river bank. Therefore, for the safety concern, I set the lighting system both on and underground. It makes the park a place that can still be used at night. It would be like an oasis nearby the river.

The north side of the park is the city hall. There are a lot of traffic and passengers during the daytime. There would be some students using the park after 4 pm because of the elementary school nearby. At about 6 pm, people would come for exercising.

The playground is an atrium in the middle of the park. Being the focus of the park, it has some symbolic meaning. Because of the elder generation's pursuit of freedom, children nowadays can live and play freely on this land.

There are a lot of families with kids living nearby. The field track provides them with a place to exercise. Moreover, the field track surrounds the playground so that people can see what's going on from afar. That allows parents to watch after their kids while jogging.

I separate people into several groups, passengers, people who come here to exercise, children, and their parents. To make sure that everyone can use the park without being interfered with by others and also they can watch after others, I divided the park into 3 areas by height.
The ground floor, the upper area, is mainly for passengers because it is the most public part. They can easily see the playground and park through the patio when they walk by. However, they can't have direct contact with people and children for safety reasons.
And the second layer is the track field that surrounds the playground. Parents and people who come here for sport can easily see the playground. Moreover, since the playground is surrounded by the track, people can easily watch after and surveil the activities inside the playground.

Different Group of People

and Playground
I set a cafe next to the only entrance to the playground so that parents can have a rest there, the entrance of the cafe is like a tunnel, after walking through it, it would be a bright space with a high ceiling.

_New Housing System

In this project, I focus on the housing forms of refugees and immigrants. Instead of providing a community center or a shelter, I turned my attention to smaller-scale domestic issues. I observed the temporary shelters accommodating immigrants, noting many of the items they carried or discarded during their relocations. These items, though simple, greatly reflect their lifestyle and habits.
When they arrive in the United States and their lives gradually stabilize, their habits begin to influence the arrangement of their American homes, which were originally designed with a Western mindset. I find this very interesting. We are accustomed to designing homes based on certain lifestyles from the start, but they adjust their homes little by little to better fit their original habits.
[ Adaptive Cultural Displacement ]
At the core of their lives are the items they carry with them, followed by the belongings they accumulate over time. I am particularly interested in their principles of arrangement because their setups reflect a contrast between their original lifestyle and American homes, as well as a certain aesthetic and cultural expression.
Therefore, in this project, I attempt to use a simple framework that integrates their cultural identity and migratory experiences, allowing them to recreate a familiar and adaptable living environment in a new setting.

Secured Status_

In one account of daily life, Ms. Paw, a young girl, describes how an immigrant family blends their own culture with American housing and neighborhood relationships. I see this as a transition phase. As they gradually stabilize, besides their belongings, they start to purchase furniture and rearrange the American home according to their lifestyle habits.
For these changes, I want to understand their cultural origins, the relationship between their lifestyle habits and the new arrangement, and what the house ultimately looks like.
▇ Reassemble their lives in the US_
" In the early hours of a serene morning, Mrs. Paw, cradling a bowl of rice and bamboo shoots, made her way from the kitchen to the living room's sacred altar. It was at this moment the doorbell chimed. Emerging from the kitchen, her mother, hands freshly wiped on a towel, proceeded to the door. Greeting them was Mrs. Paw's uncle, his hands carefully balancing a bowl of chicken. After a warm exchange of hellos, he entered the living room, a space filled with memories and traditions.
Eight years ago, the Paw family acquired this mid-century home for $50,000, thanks to the uncle's guidance. He now reverently placed his offering on the altar, acknowledging the veiled matriarch. After a brief ritual, the family intended to share a meal by the altar... "

This is a Buddhist temple located in Utica, where the main shrine has been converted from a living room of a residence. Even in the adjacent kitchen, you can see systematic furniture and a dishwasher.
I believe this photo captures the fusion of immigrant lifestyle habits with the American housing system very well. When the housing and material resources differ greatly from their home country, they must adapt to these differences.
I find the arrangement of objects particularly interesting. Perhaps based on memories or instinctive aesthetics, they arrange the objects in a new environment to create a space they imagine. The methods of display and aesthetic principles are aspects I aim to capture in this case.
WI feel like in the process of reassembling their lives in the US, immigrants are, to a certain degree, also trying to recover aspects of their lives from their native countries, such as relationships with family members, daily rituals, and religion, etc. I think the intention behind all the reassembling and modifications of their current apartments isn't just about maintaining cultural identities, but stems from a more basic need: 'trying to make their housing fit their living style and family structure.'"

Adaptive Cultural Displacement
With frequent relocations and displacement, the environment invariably impacts living and cultural practices. I'm curious about how, during each transition, they decide what to take and what to leave behind. I'm not just referring to physical objects used in daily life but also to living habits and some intangible aspects. For instance, changes in the physical environment of a dwelling might necessitate a modification in the traditional family structure. Similarly, alterations in food sources can disrupt established dietary habits, among other things.
In such scenarios, it seems certain objects and lifestyle practices are still preserved, serving as a core around which a new way of life is constructed in the new residence.
To develop a new transition system centered around rugs, it's essential to define the relationships between items throughout each phase of the transition. The variety of housing items during this period can significantly influence the configuration of the housing.
▇ Rugs as a new configuration system
I am considering what objects are present in both the traditional lifestyle of the Karen people and typical American homes. By adjusting these objects, I aim to create a more flexible system for home arrangement that accommodates the Karen people's lifestyle.
The object I thought of is the carpet. The carpet is central to the Karen people's daily life, as its placement and size define their daily activities. Therefore, I started researching how the carpet, as a system, should coordinate with various furniture items to ensure this system can adapt well to the new environment.

▇ Packing - Transition - Unfold - Reassemble

▇ Rugs as Bags
What if the items can both serve a part as an architecture component and during the transition. So I took rugs, the core of their lifestyle, as the main part of my design. By making rugs that can be both used as rugs and bags, it can be packed and carried. When they arrive at the new place, they can directly unfold the item, and reassemble it in the new house.

This project aims to merge two architectural languages within a modern financial building: a thin, efficient wall system and a classical poche (thick wall). By combining these elements, we create spaces with diverse qualities that meet modern functional needs while supporting mental well-being. The bathing area serves as the central communal space, and by emphasizing the poche, we hope it offers a retreat from the fast pace of modern life.
[ My Responsibilities ]
"Design of the Bathing Space "
To fit a public bathing area into a corner space, I designed a winding route, creating alcoves carved into the existing structural walls, which serve as shower rooms and toilets. The corner, with its scenic view, becomes the main bathing area, featuring two pools oriented toward different vistas. I aimed to blend the architectural language of the original modern structure with the poche. Interestingly, incorporating the poche actually enhanced the space's efficiency compared to the original floor plan.

The focus of this course is on how to use code to generate geometry and apply it to architecture, sculpture, or large-scale urban design. We chose Cellular Automata as the basis for our research.
Cellular Automata is a mathematical model consisting of cells in a one-dimensional or two-dimensional grid controlled by simple rules. Each cell changes its state based on its own and its neighbors' states. It is widely used in fields like computer science, physics, and biology to simulate natural phenomena and solve complex problems.
Building on this research, we tried to modify it for architectural design, focusing on the generation of more complex porosity, the formation along attractor points, and interface generation.

Sum of the Neighbor < 2 ; or
Sum of the Neighbor > 3 ;
Cell = "Dead"
Sum of the Neighbor = 2 or 3 ;
Cell = "Alive"
In this case, we set the rules like above.
Here are some graphic examples for these rules.
▍ Originally "Dead"
Sum of the Neighbor = 3 ;
Cell = "Back to Live"
Programming █ Code
By calculating the sum of neighbors, we can apply these calculations to the rules for the next generation. The issue, however, is that the pattern reaches a stable state after 5-10 generations. To increase the system's diversity, we are looking for solutions to this problem.

Starting Pattern_ initially it's randomlly selected, but we also have a list for the starting pattern

After several iterations, the "n" and "n+1" will be negative to each other in this

Team

In this case, instead of a repetitive iterations, patterns in every stage has more variety

Starting Pattern

We want to put this into the application into architectural generation. According to the principles of Cellular Automata, each unit in a space changes based on its own state and the state of its neighbors.
In this framework, the generation of upper structures depends on the distribution of lower structures, resulting in an aggregation with porous characteristics. Therefore, we designed some basic architectural modules that adapt to different voids and states, ensuring ventilation and openness between the modular units.

"AttPt"_
We tried to set one or multiple attractor points to change the vector of each point. So that we can kind of leading the growing path of this system.
Different 2D Pattern Base_

█ Brep
We created different Breps, and tried to keep the growth oit of those geomatries.
Programming Idea_
By using "IsPointInside" and keep those points out of the loop, we can also use Breps to guide the growth of the pattern.
Different Breps_

█ Generated base on "Normal"
We wanted to introduce more controllability into this selfgenerating system, so we made two major adjustments.
First, we added a new variable to the original generation model. We set an attractor point (attractor Pt), and based on the distance and vector from each point to the attractor Pt, we displaced the next round of point generation. This causes the point grid to gradually move toward the attractor Pt layer by layer. However, this somewhat disrupts the basic grid coordinates, so we tried to generate along the grid points closest to the tracking vector, which involves the rotation and normal of the object and the cosine value of the tracking vector.
The second adjustment is relatively simple: we ensured that grid points placed within the brep cannot generate objects. This idea is primarily intended to make the architecture avoid certain existing environments.

[ Decompressed 2D Images ]
An image compresses a moment in a three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional state. Through depth detection and reconstruction, we can to some extent restore the lost information and transform the photo into a 3D state. So, when we attach the restored photo as a texture to a flat surface, the surface will look like a window to another space. Although it's flat, the scenery will move and produce a sense of depth according to the viewing angle.
[ Pixel Movement ]
The key is how to make 2D image pixels appear 3D. The essential aspect is that as the viewing angle changes, pixels at different depths will move at different rates. Closer pixels move more, while farther pixels move less. Therefore, from a human perspective, there will be an illusion that the photo is three-dimensional.

[ Original Image ]
By analyzing the foreground and background in the photo, we can define the depth of each pixel.
[ Measure Depth by RGB ]
Convert the RGB [0 - 255] color values into a single-direction vector.
[ Construct 2.5D Surface ]
Regenerate the mesh using the coordinates produced by the depth vectors.

Closer pixels move more, while farther pixels move less. Therefore, from a human perspective, there will be an illusion that the photo is threedimensional.

[ Remap Texture to Surfaces ]
By mapping the photo onto the mesh, you can obtain a model that displays the photo's depth of field.

▍Pixel Movement

Environment
These textures originally produced a 2.5D effect due to pixel movement and simulation. On top of that, I applied these textures to a 3D mesh, creating two types of depth perception: the first from the texture itself and the second from the 3D mesh. With different depth maps and various textures, combined with the flexibility of the mesh, this system can generate an infinite variety of visual effects in computer graphics.

el Displacement
By overlaying different depth maps, pixels will have different movements and effects. I tested various depth maps and textures, resulting in different depth effects in the final image. Therefore, when overlaid on different meshes, it creates images with multiple perspectives and depth effects.
