Athens, Greece

Congestion state of coexisting program in specific space with the purpose of intensifying urban life. In the following research congestion becomes a tool of creating co-living social condenser multifunctional space that aims for social congestion. Derives from the soviet club urban non-material aspect of the city. Includes all the without body systems of the city such as power relationships or urban events. This project tries to highlight the problem of general privatization. Aims directly at it and hopes to overturn it. It searches architectural and urban theories and systems that base socialization at first and in the end collectivization. Conflict, co-existence and congestion become a theoretical methodology tool for the project in order to create a collective lifestyle. It aspires to describe an infrastructure, with totally public character, adjusted to contemporary Athens and aims to create urban congestion and public co-living. In order to be exposed and developed, the urban state requires a starting point: The process of industrialisation. A set of problems that contains the crisis of the city. A crisis theoretical but also practical. Following it’s decompression the traditional industrial city is abandoned as a model as the line production is broken down into individual parts and diffused on the outskirts of the city.

The result of the change of the industrial production model is the steep deindustrialization of the urban center. Simultaneously, production, consumption and housing are urbanized. Thus, the uncertainty that accompanies the diffusion process, in combination with changes in economics and planning have a significant impact on the way the city is organized. The transfer of functions outside the city limits creates intermediate inert zones, leaving the urban fabric with a huge stock of abandoned, inactive units. Thus, zones, urban voids and buildings other than their “pure” western counterparts are produced. They encircle in their void, minority groups, which find shelter in their inhospitable material. However, there are counterexamples of these ambiguous spaces. Social public life capacitors condense a wide variety of functions in changing spaces. Such are certainly the University spaces, student clubs like Iris, combining workplaces entertainment and culture like Romantso, free access Sports venues, such as Panellinios and semi-outdoor markets such as Varvakeios. Empros theater is clearly such a place which was the incentive of this diploma project. In his body he hosts a large set of urban functions with artistic, cultural and social character. It is one free space where activities that reflect the culture, the collective values and the desires of different social groups take place. Thus osmosis of social contradictions takes place through the privileged field of leisure urban congestion and public urban co-

A STORY OF CONGESTION

habitation. The persistent personal searches for new urban conditions found their place in Athens. The attraction of the degenerate public urban life is nothing more than a need for acceptance of Lefebvre’s slogan for a new approach in the city. The projection first, and the design finally of forgotten, problematic, or rather better latent places is definitely the most important lesson. Consequently, the western part of the historical triangle of Athens is chosen as the place of intervention. The great concentration of latent potentials such as: empty shells, urban gaps, multiculturalism, conflicting uses and central location in the city, constitute its design infrastructure. The theme selection is typically categorized into an exercise of rehabilitation, addition and integration. It is motivated by a fetish for latent lands and a starting point for envisioning urban life scenarios. Aspires to describe a public benefit adapted to modern Athens and aims at urban congestion and public urban cohabitation. In a period of intense alienation of individuals, in a period when social exclusion from public space is not only due to a pandemic but highlights the spirit of an era, this work aspires to discover the dynamics of the city that can turn into a positive flow. The Story of Congestion, therefore, seems to stand against the individualized and mute reality. It is a parallel reality or perhaps a utopian scenario that opposes these voices of collective coexistence.

A STORY OF CONGESTION

Right to the city Zygmunt Baumann talked about what he con- siders to be “the wasted lives of modernity”. Wasted lives because of the system. In a system that welcomes the economic model of tourism but is inhospitable to populations moving by necessity. The Story of Congestion imagines a utopia where there are no smuggled, marginal- ized or wasted lives.

HYDE PARK MUSIC PAVILION

Institution and Committee: Arquideas

London, UK

The proposal manages the existing relationship of the park with the city and tries to showcase it, by trying to integrate in the corner an infrastructure that will accommodate spaces of music, entertainment and gathering areas. A large, flat surface acts as a dual-function matrix. Its dual function lies in its programming, as a free, land-cleared walk and cell outing, suitable and free for occupation by the city’s musicians. It is the staging of uncertainty, it is not concerned with the arrangement of permanent or temporary objects but with the irrigation of the territory with potential, it does not aim for stable configuration but for the creation of enabling fields that accommodate different processes and programs. It is not about meticulous definition, but about expanding notions, not about separating and identifying entities, but about discovering unnamable hybrids, it is not obsessed with the city but with the manipulation of infrastructure for endless intensification and diversification, shortcuts and redistribution – the reinvention of psychological space. The walk is now becoming an experience - The experience becomes music – The music generates the CELLS.

SOCIAL HOUSING IN ROME

Tutors: Palmieri, K. (valerio.palmieri@uniroma3.it)

Social and collective housing. A suggestion in the suburbs of Rome. Being a strict boundary on the road, with a clear introverted orientation, the composition is organized in public and private. The body of the buildings helps in this direction. The program is intertwined with the goal of the greatest possible conflict of use in order to create more urban events. Focus is given to common areas with a complex program: common kitchens, work areas, urban vegetable gardens

THEATER SCHOOL AND THEATER IN ATHENS

Tutors: Papaioannou, T. (tpapaioannou@arch.ntua.gr) Alexandrou, E. (ealexandrou@arch.ntua.gr)

It is a project related to the analytical study of the main problems associated with the design of a building with a public character and a complex operating program. The teams focused on both architectural design and architectural technology, emphasized on the integration of the building in the urban fabric, its high development and vertical structure, the organization and character of the interior, the design of the outdoor public space, the general choice of materials and the design of the building’s load-bearing structure in detail. The creation of two public squares and the organization of the complex program were the main intentions of the project. Classrooms, direction-film rooms, scenography and acting rooms, library, Theater, experimental black box theater, offices, administration and a restaurant, are organized around a central atrium and encourage public outdoor living. The theater, thus, becomes an event that happens anywhere, being a part of the public every-day life. Athens, Greece

OPEN AIR LIBRARY

Tutors: Kourkoulas, A. (akourkoulas@arch.ntua.gr)

This project studies the basic problems associated with the design of public buildings. It also concerns the integration of architectural design and technology, the integration of such buildings into the urban fabric, their limitations of development and height, their spatial organization and character of their interior and exterior space, the materials and the design. Emphasis is given on buidlings with programms such as amphitheater, exhibition spaces, and libraries. Thus an open air library is developed in the void of an urban Athenian block.

EXPOSING Libido and regularity are boxed in an abnormal library. A zigzag line crosses the “room” opposite the schools. The zigzag line translates to a wall. Irregular walls, with variable geometry on both axes. They divide the space by creating new Rooms; libraries - reading rooms. Materiality and textures are transferred to their spatial expression. Hidden room. Translucency. Intensity. The minimum possible thickness is selected and in combination with the translucent marble surfaces, the alternation between visible and hidden, light and shadow is achieved. Hidden in public view.

INTEGRATION IN AN ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE

Athens, Greece

In an urban scenery, special, emotionally-charged and closely related with the history, the design procedure and integration demand systematic consideration of the history as well as the scenery that is going to be designed. The distinctive identity of the area, the handling of the urban gabs besides the importance of the combined total outdoor area form the design environment of an(our) cultural center. The importance of the ancient road that across the area organize the total concept and after all our design. Two prismatic shapes are crossed, placed in the north section of the area, letting free and natural the area, the ancient road, the history. The ancient roa d across the ground shape and break apart it after all. This void exposes the underside of the building, creating the appearance of an outdoor structure. The relation between outdoor and indoor form that procedure. The second shape comes unstuck from the first one and hovers. Making reference to the ancient road with Its linearity as its direction. Blind but with an opening at the acropolis. The importance of the outdoor life in a cultural center and the touch with history form the design. An outdoor amphitheatre placed in the refolding of the slab of the ground shape, while beneath of that an auditorium with sculptural reference and due to the fact that the ground shape has been broken apart the auditorium is open-air. History, outdoor life and the total urban scenery have been our initial intent The main support structure is based on a grid of columns that is closely related a has references from the archaeological findings.

RESEARCH THESIS

RIGHT IN DYSTIPIA Publication Date: SEPTEMBER 2019 NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS Supervisor: Tournikiotis, P. (ptournikiotis@arch.ntua.gr)

This research attempts to search, present and interpret a series of trips by the founder of the office of OMA, Rem Koolhaas, at the urbanization process of Lagos, Nigeria. This enterprise aims at familiarization with a specific urban environment, unalike from Western European, a prerequisite and condition for the development for a discursive framework capable of assimilating and rethinking the constituent elements of different and indigenous urbanity. Koolhaas’s positions on the city and urban planning are pretty radical. But overall, both his manifestos: S, M, L, XL, Delirious New York, and Villette’s proposal can provide a backdrop for a well-conceived notion of his urban theory. They are therefore the basis and precondition for interpreting and understanding the journey to Lagos that follows. For this reason, each chapter will attempt a parallel exploration and narration between 2 + 1 time period - consideration. The first two focus on Koolhaas’s theoretical discourse and his practice at Villette. The third, begins in 1998 with a trip to Lagos and the attempt to establish a theory on the city. Therefore, a link between the tripartite Lagos-S, M, L, XL.-Villette will be attempted, based on Koolhaas’s view of the urban state and its practices.

Research Thesis

Right in Dystopia, Lagos

Koolhaas disengage itself from specific theories and practices in an attempt to create new condition with the space. He accept the urban chaos. Having an endogenous desire to sescover a self-organized city, an horizontal Downtown Athletic Club, an early or late Villette, a Generic City he will end up in Lagos. However, he will transcend the structures, institutions and social forces that constitute and shape Lagos. Amist the aestheticization of African Urban Dystopia, a selective reading of the city seems to take place. Disconnected from historical and political pursuits, a persistence in its intransigent position on the failure of modern reality, first expressed in Delirious New York, and then in S, M, L, XL, is revealed. The Harvard Project on the City analysis of Lagos seems to theorize urban formations by isolating them. It avoids political and historical connection, by de-politicizing the urban space. However, the persistence to turn his gaze on Lagos justifies him on two levels. Promoting a forgotten, western-style dystopian world is definitely an urban lesson. There is a tendency for these places to be looked upon with horror and pity. But the Harvard lab and their supervisor are released by both. They see an architectural and planning practice that western reason sees as a ruin. They discover a place of extreme invention, self-organization and ultimately improvisation. Where the locals design new relationships every day, inspired by the endless power of survival. Studies like these invite us to look too.

“The School of Athens”, the Greek Pavilion exhibition at the Biennale Architettura 2018, examined the architecture of the academic commons – from Plato’s Academy to contemporary university designs. Refe encing Raphael’s famous fresco, the Pavilion is transformed into a stepped landscape – an open, informal, and common space that will invite visitors to interact with fifty-six 3D-printed models of educational spaces from around the world and different architectural periods, both built and unbuilt.
