What lays eggs like a reptile but has a bill like a duck’s and fur like a beaver’s? A platypus! According to SuperScientificKids.org, “The first British scientist to study the platypus thought that someone was playing a joke on him!” The scientist thought the animal was a fake. It is easy to see why. The platypus, which is an Australian mammal, has some unusual features. A platypus is a small water mammal with brown fur. It is about 18 inches long and weighs about 3 pounds. Its fur protects it in cold water. The animal uses its paddle-shaped tail and webbed feet to swim. It uses its flat bill to dig for food. A platypus gets its food by hunting in rivers and streams. It scoops up insects, shellfish, and worms. Then it stores food in its cheek pouches as it swims back to the surface to eat. The platypus is one of only two mammals that lay eggs. A mother platypus digs special holes called burrows for her eggs. A baby platypus that hatches from its egg is called a puggle. Although a platypus may look cuddly, people should not touch it! It is not friendly. A male platypus has sharp spurs on its back legs that contain venom. Being stung by a platypus hurts! This odd animal may be funny-looking, but its unusual features help it stay alive. A platypus can live for about 13 years in the wild. So maybe being strange is not such a bad idea!
