Frequently Asked Questions: Breast Implants 1. How long do breast implants last? They only have to be removed and exchanged if the patient develops a problem. Most implants last over 20 years. 2. What should be my main concerns when choosing breast implant sizes? Let the surgeon know approximately what cup size you desire and he will make recommendations regarding what size implant will give you that result. We usually recommend choosing an implant size that is in proportion with your body. 3. Breast sizes are typically measured by bra cup sizes, is this a good way to choose a breast implant size? If not, what is the best way? Implants sizes are measured in cc. Cup size is a proportion based on the patient’s breast size compared to their height and weight. Therefore the same cup size will look very different on different people. Implant size also does not directly correlate with cup size because of this patient variability. 4. How long is the recovery time for breast implants?

In general most women are able to drive a car after 3-5 days. Vigorous exercise is not recommended for several weeks. 5. Can pregnancy affect my breast implants? Pregnancy can affect the appearance of you breasts but not your breast implants. 6. Is it possible to breastfeed with breast implants? In most cases, yes. 7. How long should I wait before revising my breast implants? Revision is only necessary if the patient desires a size change, the appearance of her breasts change ( secondary to pregnancy , weight loss or gain) or she develops complications such as hardness (capsular contracture). 8. What questions should I ask my surgeon about breast implants? Implants are made of saline or silicone. In addition to different sizes they also come in different shapes. 9. What breast implant placement and position would give me the most natural look? Most commonly implants are placed underneath the muscle. The most common incision is located in the breast fold under the breast although other incisions may be used. 10. Which are better, silicone or saline breast implants? Both implants are used and which one is recommended depends on the patient needs. 11. How large are breast implant scars and can they be hidden when wearing a swimsuit?

The incisions are usually small and no scars should be visible wearing a swim suit. Sometimes breast implant surgery may be combined with a breast lift.
