Architecture and Design

EVAN SACK

THE ARCHITECT’S CHAIR

An

architects responsibility is to effectively program space that will hopefully create desirable experiences for the end user. The most important of these experiences to design then would be the high traffic, heavy use, everyday objects. Like most students in this field, I find that my workstation can have a profound impact on my mood and productivity. The resulting design was manufactured using digital fabrication technologies.

RESEARCH PAVILION

The

CASA organization provided a platform for architectural experimentation in exchange that it be raffled off to help fund the children the charity serves. Our team of students provided a material driven solution that responded to the constraints and characteristics of its own construction process. The goal was that a lengthy design process could be thorough enough to fasttrack the construction process. The resulting structure took less than three days to construct, and could flat pack with some assembly on site. This opens the door for future research into disaster housing possibilities or other emergency shelter applications. With this aspect of the project, our team decided that with the absence of site, the most logical way to inform design would be a fabrication responsive design. This ensures a resulting structure that serves both the end user, and those responsible for its creation.

Dining

is an exercise in turning a meal from a necessity into an experience. Therefore, a restaurants program should not only celebrate the cuisine, but the guests as well. This design creates a dramatic ramp through the glowing atrium core. This connects the two main programatic volumes and transitions from the waiting area down into the primary dining facility. This series of long winding ramps also serve as seating for guests to further promote the narrative of guests as the main attraction of the evening. This system in conjunction with other features combine to create an equally grand and sustainable structure.

A DAY IN MUSKOGEE

The

city of Muskogee is home to a dying mall less than a block from its city center. This suburban retail giant is a drain on the economy as it has lost business to Tulsa. In response, our team offered up a proposal that brought life back to muskogee in a master plan that integrates open public space, entertainment, dining, and other programatic elements to attract residents and outsiders alike.
