It was a great struggle to learn this trade / art and I would like to thank my mentor and gift LDB for allowing me in her life and lane. If asked “why am I interested in producting a mens magazine”, especially in the north shore of Illinois? Evanston has been a giant part of my life and doesnt suprise me that I have landed here. This magazine is a piece of a bigger puzzle in my life. It represents my struggle to be heard and valued as a significant “mind”. Like most people, I am a reflection of the many stories and adventures I live and have lived. This magazine will give me one more avenue in which I can let that story be known. NICHOLAS SCANIO CHIROPRACTIC

WELLNESS REVOLUTION 1117 Emerson St. Evanston, IL 60201 847.869.1773 Dr. Nicholas Scanio was introduced to chiropractic early in life as an athlete. During college he begun having lower back issues while power lifting, and found a solution in treating his back through chiropractic care. As a pre-medicine student, he then decided to learn about chiropractic care due to his strong outcome as a patient. “The principles seemed to align with the way I envisioned myself impacting others.” Bringing his fruition to light to impact others, Dr. Scanio along with other student doctors traveled to Brazil to donate everyday items and medical care to underprivileged residents with limited access to healthcare. Committed to Guiding You Through the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) So You Can Focus on What Truly Matters in the Moment, Your Loved One. with Karen Kopan

K

aren Kopan is a compassionate critical care Nurse Practitioner who began a journey of true healing, restoration and balance in her own life which enabled her to not only excel in her career but to also seek opportunities to create a better world around her. “I have a lifetime of patient and family stories embedded in my mind and my heart. These amazing recoveries, surprising losses, heart wrenching tragedies and disturbing comedies are endearing to both my intellectual curiosity and resilient heart. These stories, these lives, that supported the integration of both professional and personal growth, inspire and motivate me to live with a bigger purpose in my life.”

Several years ago, Kopan arrived rather early at a visitation service for a wake and decided to get a cup of tea to pass the time. She stumbled upon a senior center that had a café inside. As she read through the scheduled event pages of their magazine, she realized she had something to offer the community. For 33 years she has worked in the Intensive Care Unit with patients and families as they struggled with all the choices in decision-making that comes with being in the intensive care unit and here was an opportunity to share what she sees day after day in the public! Kopan contacted the volunteer manager and scheduled six monthly presentations. Kopan soon realized she needed to reach more people to educate them about advance directives and the way they handle life and death in critical care areas. The time to make choices and decisions is when one is healthy and clearly thinking and in alignment with what matters most as far as a valuable and productive life. There’s no time for discussion when one is sedated with a breathing tube on a ventilator and unable to tell one’s family what to say, or decide, when one is unable to speak for themselves, or even conscious. “I gathered the courage to start a blog to inform people, raise awareness, evoke discussion, share stories, answer questions and get people talking about life and death long before they ever enter a hospital.” Kopen truly envisions’ families and friends literally sitting around a table, talking about the choices they would make at the end of their life. “People are ready to talk about the tough topics; I have had these conversations with my own family and friends. When my Dad suffered a cardiac arrest at home and was in a coma after life-saving efforts, my Mom and our family knew exactly what he would have wanted. There was no hesitancy in making decisions because we had talked about it so often. We were advocating for what he would have said if he could speak for himself. For many, unfortunately, these discussions are often delayed or only briefly touched upon and then critical decisions have to be made in the hospital setting in the middle of a family crisis, when timing is less than optimal. I see this over and over again in the ICU setting and I’m committed to talking with the community about what living can look like and what dying can look like; the good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful.” intensivekaren.com

FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS

P

PREVENTIVE LAWYERING

reventive lawyering is a concept that is rarely given much attention. It is a model of practicing law that focuses on preventive legal and conflict wellness; especially in the field of family law. Family law is generally viewed as a dispute, conflict and litigation practice. The parties’ emotions run high and lawyers want to “aggressively fight” for their client. Typically, a client will come to my office for a free initial consultation after a rift has occurred between their spouse and they are looking for information on the divorce process. This is the point where preventive lawyering is critical to my practice. As soon as a client enters my office the discussion revolves around a resolution of financial, emotional, and interpersonal relationships. It is my job as a lawyer to educate and counsel the client on existing conflicts before they spiral out of control. I also strive to manage the client’s expectations. This prevents unnecessary conflict which often leads to avoidable conflicts and in turn, high legal fees. To that end, it is my goal to recognize when a client may need outside assistance to avoid holding onto grudges that inevitably escalate into aggression and the desire for revenge. To prevent that outcome, families may need to become involved in parenting classes, anger management classes, financial planning and post-divorce support groups. Further, it is my role as a family law attorney to negotiate in good faith with the opposing counsel. Examples would be working out a property division or crafting a reasonable parenting plan. Good faith implies that both parties are not just looking out for themselves,

P. Ann O’Connell Law, LTD

but they are leaving selfish and spiteful tendencies at the door. Often in high conflict divorces, one spouse has to “win”. There is no “win” in divorce, no matter how property is divided or how well-crafted the parenting plan is. I have heard that lawyers must be a “bulldog” in the courtroom. Be wary of the attorney that advertises “they will aggressively protect your interest”. While aggressive buzzwords may attract clients, a family law practice that does not implement preventive lawyering leads to client satisfaction that is significantly lower. It is important to remember that when decisions are made by a judge, outcomes are rarely optimal for either party. The same is true for when emotions are high as conversations between lawyers are less like to be productive and the decisions made may not be in the best interest of the clients. All this leads to high attorneys’ fees and client dissatisfaction. Although my main goal is “success” for my client, a sole focus on that goal often leads to serious consequences for family relations, especially when it comes to children. For this reason, my family law practice seeks to prevent costly and high conflict litigation, create a divorce without blame, negotiate in good faith, and to cultivate an atmosphere of mutual respect which places the needs of children first. For more information on preventive lawyering and the Divorce process in the Chicagoland area, an initial consultation is your next best step. Curing Chronic Pain Through Integrative Care

D

with Dr. Sheetal DeCaria

r. Sheetal DeCaria knew in medical school that she wanted to help restore the lives of patients in with chronic pain. “I couldn’t think of a more fulfilling field of medicine than one which enables you to heal suffering and improve a patient’s quality of life,” says Dr. DeCaria. She is now a double board-certified physician after completion of an anesthesia residency at University of Chicago and a pain fellowship at Northwestern.

After a decade of treating acute and chronic pain, Dr. DeCaria witnessed firsthand the countless barriers patients face and the limitations of our current healthcare system. While on faculty at University of Chicago, Dr. DeCaria realized that she wanted to do more than what conventional medicine could offer her patients. “Millions of Americans continue to suffer from pain despite advancements in science. So I began to study integrative medicine, a discipline of medicine that utilizes both complementary and conventional therapies, focusing on prevention and diagnosing the root cause of illness.” In January 2019, Dr. DeCaria opened Revitalize Medical Center to bring this type of comprehensive pain management to the Chicago North Shore area. “Managing chronic pain is hard for a patient to do on their own. Far too often, patients end up in my clinic as a last resort, rather than a first step on their journey to a proper diagnosis and treatment plan,” states Dr. DeCaria. “My goal is to guide patients on complementary treatments they can use for their conditions, while also utilizing conventional medicine to diagnose and treat.” Dr. DeCaria sees the treatment of chronic pain as a multifaceted puzzle. Each patient’s experience with pain is unique, and each needs a very specific treatment plan. “This type of approach requires time,” Dr. DeCaria says. “What is lacking in our current healthcare system is the ability for physicians to spend quality time with their patients.” Opening her own practice enables Dr. DeCaria to practice this type of personalized medicine. Her approach is to partner with the patient to not only treat their current pain condition but to prevent the onset of further pain issues in the future. “I believe there is a lot that modern medicine does offer us,” Dr. DeCaria states. “But to be the most effective, it needs to be combined with time-tested complementary treatments and lifestyle modifications.” Dr. DeCaria encourages patients to see a pain physician sooner rather than later. “Treating chronic pain is far easier and generally more successful early in the disease process,” states Dr. DeCaria. In addition to an integrative approach, Revitalize Medical Center offers the latest technology in targeted interventions and minimally invasive procedures, including regenerative medicine and water-cooled radiofrequency ablation. Dr. DeCaria is accepting new patients at her Evanston and Glenview locations. revitalizemedcenter.com

Providing Excellent Quality of Care

D

with Dr. Meria Berman

r. Meira Berman was only 12 years old when she figured out she wanted to be a dentist when she grew up. As her friends and family were trying to avoid the dentist’s office, she was trying to find a reason to be there. She was fascinated by the equipment and x-rays and procedures at the dentist and asked so many questions of the orthodontist when getting her braces adjusted that the receptionist booked extra time for her appointments. In school, she loved the precision of science class as much as she loved socializing in the lunchroom. As a dental student, Dr. Berman fantasized about establishing her own practice because she wanted to change how patients perceived their time with a dentist. Dr. Berman understands the perception most people have of dentistry, and it’s her mission to strip away the apprehension and mystery. “I want everyone to understand their options, and trust what we’re saying. We become teammates during their treatment, and in this way, we make a profound difference in our patients’ health, comfort, and confidence.” Dr Berman continues “Advances in dentistry make the experience a lot quicker and more comfortable than most patients are used to, which is why we’re so deeply committed to continuing education for our entire staff.” Even though Dr. Berman had a clear vision of what she wanted for her practice, it was six years until she opened her own practice. She felt professionally ready much sooner, but the prospect of putting everything on the line was terrifying. It wasn’t until a patient called her one day and said “please do let me know if you ever change practices…I’d commute a long time to stay your patient” that she realized it was time to take a leap of faith. “It’s very empowering to know that my patients had so much faith and trust in me. And I’m really proud of the environment we’ve created at Elements Dental Studio – striking a balance between soothing energy and rigorous professionalism.” One of her favorite parts of her job is connecting with her patients. “I love getting to know my patients on a personal level. Many have become my friends, and many friends have become patients. It’s like an extended family – we might only see them a few times a year, but we get to see their families grow, their careers advance and sometimes a lot of emotions can come out in that chair. It’s a safe and loving place to be treated.” Dr Berman received her Bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and her Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. The entire staff at Elements receives continuing education, and Dr. Berman strives to be a leader in both patient care and technical expertise. Her ongoing education includes a post graduate program in contemporary and esthetic dentistry at the University of Minnesota, as well as the Clinical Mastery Series. She also takes the time to connect with other dental professionals in the area, ”you have to keep your network up for the benefit of your patients as well” she muses “because I want to be absolutely confident in my referrals.” Dr Meira Berman lives in Evanston, Illinois with her husband, three children, two dogs, and her cross country skis. A native of Minneapolis, Dr Berman was open to beginning her career in a new city but hoped to settle in a place that offered a similar balance in culture and access to nature. When her multiracial, interfaith family began to grow, Dr Berman had a new appreciation for Evanston’s diverse community and support system. “We’re not unique here,” Dr. Berman reflected, “there were other families facing the same challenges and fears that nagged at us. Coming together in such a bright and progressive community gave us a lot of confidence as new parents.” When asked how she balances her work and home life Dr. Berman said this, “I don’t have a balance. With three very young children and my own business, my plate is always full. Sometimes, I work a ton and don’t see my kids as much as I’d like. Other times, the balance tips towards my family. What gets me through it is gratitude. My children are healthy, I love my work, and I’m so grateful that I get to do both. If it means that I’m not always in perfect balance, I’ve made peace with that.” The rare moments of free time are spent outside regardless of the weather, where she is reminded constantly that health is holistic, interconnected, and elemental. elementsdentalstudio.com

After obtaining an undergraduate degree in Biology, and a Master’s in Physiology from the University of Illinois, Dr. Batista graduated from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency training at Saint Joseph Hospital- while it was affiliated with Northwestern Memorial Hospital. During her Master’s she also conducted research in the field of Neuroscience and published topics on Hypertension and Exercise. There are very unique health concerns for both sexes and those concerns evolve throughout various life stages. She says in addition to receiving college credit, “They have definitely challenged me, and I feel so lucky to have been able to attend a school where those classes are an option. A lot of those classes were structured in a way that I felt they definitely prepared me for the rigor of college classes.” In addition to photography and multivariable calculus dual credit courses, she’s taking linear algebra this year. She says she “absolutely loved” her photography class, and her calculus and linear algebra classes “have been the most challenging classes I’ve ever taken.” “I’ve loved that these classes are so challenging and definitely feel as rigorous as I imagine college classes are, but they don’t feel like I’m going to a different school. They are taught by my high school teachers, so they feel very normal to be taking,” Batres adds. Batres’ involvement in the community-based Evanston Scholars has helped her manage the rigors of a challenging academic course load while finding time to get involved in other activities. She serves as vice president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and is involved in Students Without Borders, a club that supports undocumented students and promotes awareness of immigration issues and debunks xenophobic beliefs about immigrants. Answer: There is no vaccine against Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of cognitive decline. But, there are five concrete steps we all can take to help ourselves reduce the risk. According to research recently reported in the medical journal Neurology, the inflammation our bodies may experience in our 40s and 50s can lead to higher rates of cognitive decline in our 70s and 80s. So what does that mean? The researchers followed a group of people in their 40s and 50s for over twenty years. In short, they found that people with higher levels of inflammatory markers early in their lives had steeper climbs in cognitive decline as the years progressed. This is one of the longest time intervals that people have been followed trying to find what may cause cognitive decline or dementia. While the lead researcher does admit that they cannot conclusively prove that systemic inflammation causes cognitive decline later in life, the people with the higher levels of inflammation early in life had higher levels of cognitive decline later. The reverse also held that people with less inflammation had less cognitive decline later. So what can a person do? It turns out that following a healthy lifestyle really does have a powerful impact on your overall health as you age. Here are five steps to help you in your effort to avoid cognitive decline as you age: 1. Keep your weight in a “normal” range 2. Maintain a healthy blood pressure. 3. Regularly exercise, each day every day. Walking is a universal exercise. 4. Maintain a healthy diet which avoids saturated fats and sugars. 5. Manage any other health issues with your health care provider. This column was created because I’m often asked questions by overwhelmed caregivers to older loved ones. As an Aging Life Care Professional I provide Answers, Advocacy and Alternatives to seniors and their families as they address medical and lifestyle decisions. Please send your questions to: info@AccidentalCaregiver.info.

vanston Woman magazine welcomes, Evanston Man. It was a journey to begin publishing this issue along side Evanston Woman. I thank our readers for the consistent reminder, men are important as well. Now we are able to bring education, information and resources to benefit men, women and families in one publication. As our seasons change, so are the needs of our community. Evanston houses 700+ non profits, many of which have served our community members for many years. I ask each of you to visit our website, evanstonwoman.com to see which organization you could contribute back to as a volunteer, member or board member. It’s important to understand the fabric of our non profits organizations who provide a “need” in our community. Women in Healthcare is a priority in today’s health arena. Evanston Woman would like to take this time to thank the women in healthcare who are providing an excellent level in quality of care in the Evanston area. We welcome these healthcare professionals who care for our lives, and our loved ones. On page 4, ETHS graduate, Diane Batres shares her academic journey from Oakton College to MIT. Congratulations to the 2019 ETHS Graduates. May your next season of life be fruitful Cheers!
