WELLNESS
SUCCESS IN WELLNESS RESOLUTIONS BY JOSIE TENORE, M.D.
It’s January. Most of us have already made a list of resolutions to strive for this year, some of which are health related. Motivation is greater the first couple weeks of the new year, and then something happens. Fear sets in, we begin to doubt ourselves, and we’ve decided that we are going to fail to keep the resolutions we set. Why does motivation wane and selfdoubt creep in so quickly? Most of us set resolutions that are far from attainable. Lofty goals are great to have, but if you want to actually make changes, especially those that involve health, you need to think big, and start small. continued on page 10 6 E VA N S TO N W O M A N . Celebrating 40 Years of Art, Education, & Community BY NETTA KEESOM
T
ucked into a quiet corner of the Noyes Cultural Art Center sits the offices of Art Encounter. For 40 years, the arts outreach nonprofit has given Evanston residents of all ages opportunities to engage with art and artists from around the world. At the helm of Art Encounter is Joanna Pinsky, who founded the nonprofit in 1987 with the help of two friends. The three artists were concerned with what they saw as few opportunities for people to engage with and learn about art, specifically from the perspective of artists. “We saw a big gap between artists and the general public,” Pinsky said. “We wanted to find away of bringing art to more people.”
“It creates that encounter with art on the street,” said Lea Pinsky, Joanna’s daughter and Art Encounter’s outreach and education programming director.
Art Encounter approaches this goal through an interactive, discussion and question-based approach. Pinsky likened their method to a book club of the art world, rather than a standard docent-led museum tour. Pinsky sees this process as vital to expanding community engagement with art.
Pinsky and her husband, Dustin Harris lead the EMAP program. Although Art Encounter focuses primarily on art education, rather than production, Pinsky said the EMAP program stays true to the organization’s mission of “infusing art [into] people’s lives.”
“It allows people to exchange ideas,” she said. “You end up seeing much more deeply because everybody is contributing,” she said. In its early days, Art Encounter mostly organized gallery and private studio tours. Today, its activities include programming in public schools and senior residences, while maintaining a variety of opportunities for enthusiasts and lifelong learners. Recently, Art Encounter launched the Evanston Mural Arts Program (EMAP), in which it works with business districts and locals to paint Evanston’s gray viaducts with vibrant murals.
This May, Art Encounter will celebrate its 40 th anniversary with a gala at the Evanston Woman’s Club. In partnership with the Zolla Lieberman Gallery, Art Impacts 2018 will feature an auction of museum-quality artwork, as well as a “Taste of Evanston,” with dishes from local chefs. Even after four decades, the women of Art Encounter are always planning their next steps. They are currently preparing to bring their programs to more Evanston schools, paint more murals with EMAP, and grow the group’s membership. Their work, Joanna Pinsky said, is all in service of the community, “That’s what makes it worthwhile.”

continued from page 10 Our lives are quite busy, far different from years past, so making drastic changes that add to your plate will only cause stress and set you up for failure. The point of setting resolutions is to grow for the better, and keeping them will allow you to reap the rewards. Let’s get you on that path. Here are 5 Tips to Ensure that your Goals are Achievable: down your health goals. What would you 1 WRITE like to change? Why? How do you want to feel? Be very specific and detailed.
