EDITOR’S CORNER As we end 2019, It has been an amazing year. The city government kept our locals on their toes, and community members have become more engaged. I invite each of you to begin thinking about the day 80% of votes that came in to SAVE HARLEY CLARK in the last election. Now, Evanston Lighthouse Community Gardens is on a mission to keep the doors open. I, along with many community members are hopeful and look forward to the day Harley Clark will be an equitable space for all. You’re invited to LIKE Evanston Community Lakehouse & Gardens on Facebook page at Facebook.com/evanstoncommunitylakehouse and learn more about the movement behind their organization. It’s my favorite time of the year, the Holiday’s!! The Holiday Book 2019 features Oliver’s Toys with the BEST GIFTS to purchase for different age groups. Both online and in the store, Oliver’s Toys has an array of games and toys for the growing boy or girl. Located on Central Street, Oliver’s Toys has something for everyone on your list! My focus has evolved.. thanks to the talented Dr. Marina Kostina. Her work has opened my vision during meditation to see the possibilities into my future. Her latest book, Find the G-Spot of Your Soul was an eye opener to understand my passion for service. I look for equity in rooms I enter.. to ensure the next woman or minority business owner, community member coming behind me has a head start. It was very disturbing when I had the door closed, resources removed.. because of my race.. here in Evanston. After listening to Dr. Kostina, I began to refocus my purpose, and embrace my God given talents.. as one door closed, another door opened. Thank you to Dr. Kostina for breaking the mold and rewriting what boldness looks like for many women who are looking to live a RAVENOUS life! I personally would like to thank all the business who supports Evanston Woman and Evanston Man magazine. Our community is going through a very tough time.. though this too will pass. I ask each of my supporters, company supporters, and community members to Stay Strong. It’s time to say, “YES” to community.. will you join me? I wish each of you a happy and healthy New Year. I hope you have the time to visit with friends and family during the holidays, and are ready to create small goals to accomplish rather New Year’s resolutions. I will be speaking to locals at the end of December to hear what their goals look like as we welcome in a new decade. I would love to hear from you , please email me evanstonwoman@gmail.com Cheers!

Relieving Pregnancy Back Pain
M
Sheetal DeCaria, M.D.
ore than two-thirds of pregnant women experience back pain. Why is that? Pregnancy causes your body to secrete a hormone called “relaxin. Relaxin loosens your supporting joints and ligaments, which opens them up to injury. This causes extra strain on your low back, hips and sacroiliac joints. As your baby bump grows, the extra weight causes a shift in your posture, putting additional pressure on your spine and the muscles of your back. Unfortunately, most pain medications are not safe to take during pregnancy so many women seek out alternative treatment options. If aqua fitness is not for you, walking thirty minutes a day or attending a prenatal yoga class can help too. However, it is important to keep in mind the level of physical fitness you were in before you were pregnant. If you never exercised before the pregnancy and would
like to start, it is a good idea to begin an exercise program under the guidance of a physical therapist. Movements will need to be modified based on your stage of pregnancy. Strengthening your gluteal and pelvic floor muscles can help back pain as well. 4. Wear A Maternity Support Belt There are a variety of support belts that can be used to provide additional support to your back and ease some pressure depending on what is causing the back pain. A pain physician or physical therapist can aid in choosing an appropriate belt. 5. Taste of Evanston

aste of Evanston, a signature North Shore food festival, raised about $75,000 for local charities at their July 14 event. Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club’s annual fundraiser supported two organizations that are attacking the problem on housing insecurity from two angles. To create more affordable homes in the near term, funds generated from Taste of Evanston will enable Reba Place Development Corp. to create additional safe and decent affordable units. To assure the city’s long-term growth of affordable housing, Connections for the Homeless will use its grant to lead Joining Forces for Affordable Housing, a multi-faceted advocacy campaign to inspire Evanston city leaders to develop a sustainable affordable housing plan, and encourage residents to embrace it. Their goal is to replace NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) with YIMBY (Yes In My Back Yard). The event featured 40 of the city’s most celebrated restaurants, breweries and wine shops on the great lawn of the historic Charles Gates Dawes House, residence of the 30th Vice President of the United States, and now home of the Evanston History Center. While sampling food and drink, guests enjoyed a view of the lakefront, live music, a silent auction, tours of the Dawes mansion, and the knowledge that they were helping to solve one of Evanston’s most pressing issues: housing insecurity. Many Evanstonians pay over 50 percent of their income on housing. Nurses. Teachers. Firefighters. People with disabilities. Senior citizens. People who must choose between necessities like food or medicine and keeping a roof over their head. Connections for the Homeless and Reba Place Development Corp., are well known for their effectiveness in fighting housing insecurity. For more than 25 years, Reba Place Development Corp. has been leveraging grants to create affordable housing units in Evanston. RPDC currently has 49 units under management with rents as low as $775 per month for a 2-bedroom apartment. For their part, Connections for the Homeless has offered a broad range of services for people confronting homelessness since 1984. In 2018 alone, they served more than 1,400 people by preventing families from losing their homes, helping people obtain stable housing, and providing shelter, counseling, hygiene and medical services to people who are homeless. Joining Forces for Affordable Housing, their advocacy arm, has already initiated the important work of studying the extent of Evanston’s housing crisis, revealing that we have a shortage of more than 3,500 affordable homes. They are also conducting “Affordable Housing 101” seminars around the community to explain the causes of the housing crisis and address concerns, and are providing input to the Evanston City Council as they develop a comprehensive plan for expanding affordable housing in our community. FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS
The Differences Between Legal and Physical Custody
W
by Ann O’Connell Law, Ltd.
hen parents with children go through a divorce in Illinois, the most contentious issue is often child custody. Most parents know they want as much custody as the courts will grant them, but what many do not know is which type or types of custody for which to fight. Illinois recognizes various types of custody, two of the most common of which are legal and physical. Legal custody refers to the ability for one or both parents to make major decisions regarding the child’s welfare and upbringing. Some such decisions may involve the choice of schools, religious education, cultural education, tutoring, health care, extracurricular activities and other decisions that may affect child-rearing. In most situations, the courts will award “joint legal custody” to both parents. Joint custody means both parents must share decision-making responsibilities. If one parent can prove that the other is unfit, or if the judge feels that a parent is unfit, they may award sole legal custody to one parent. However, these situations are less common. Physical custody refers to the parent who will care for the child’s physical needs on a day-to-day basis. Though most parents strive for joint physical custody, 50/50 custody is often impractical, especially as the child ages. The courts typically prefer that the child lives with one parent a majority of the time to lessen the disruption on the child’s routine. The chosen parent is the “primary custodian” of the child. The parent that is not the physical custodian of the child

will get visitation rights. Typically, the courts grant non-custodial parents exclusive visitation every other weekend during the school year, every other week during the summer and alternating major holidays. In rare instances will the courts grant one parent sole legal and physical custody. If a judge decides sole custody is in order, it is because one parent is either unfit or incapable of caring for the child. SUPERFAST
Words: by Yves Le Sieur , Aaron Foster|Photography :by Michael Sharp
car named “Superfast?” you better get ready for a bit of whiplash. The Ferrari 812 Superfast is a savage beast. The world’s most powerful normally aspirated engine – a touch under 800hp from 12 cylinders, hence “812” Superfast’s name – it delivers 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds with a 211mph top speed. It is a car built for speed but it’s also blessed with superlative road manners, so whether you’re on your local highway or on the track, you’ll be rewarded. Our test car was specified on the racier side, with many weight-saving carbon fiber options including its racing seats, which are manually adjusted thus skipping the heavier motorized versions. For those who want more luxe, no problem, Ferrari will build to suit your style. They say that summer is never truly over in Southern California. This saying never had truer meaning than when the shiny and new Ferrari 812 Superfast got delivered for a week-long test drive at our offices in Newport Beach. This gleaming machine (in Giallo Modena yellow) attracted a lot of attention upon unloading from the transport. At first glance, it is aggressive, and it even looks quick standing still. After a few nods of approval from the gathering crowd, we quickly took it for a spin, just to make sure that everything was working fine (of course). A few things jump at you as soon as you put your foot to the gas pedal. It jumps – it is an immediate response that will get you back in your seat, which is designed for such a purpose. The other thing that left an impression was the sound. Frankly, nothing sounds like a Ferrari. In this particular case, the rumble only adds to the visceral experience. It is a guttural growl that will make your hair stand on the back of your neck. Did we mention that it is fast? Before you take notice,
the speedometer will quickly jump from 40, to 60, to 100mph, and much beyond in just the blink of an eye. The acceleration is sudden and will take you by surprise. Needless to say, at those speeds, one must be vigilant, as we are not on the Autobahn (the toll roads in California make for a scenic and picturesque stand-in.) There are several driving modes that you can switch easily, all located on the steering wheel which will help enhance your driving experience. From its front mid-engined layout, which balances the V12’s weight behind the front axle for ideal handling dynamics, to its four-wheel steering system, which optimizes stability during high-speed cornering, this Ferrari is brimming with the technology and beauty that’s sure to please true car enthusiasts. If going faster than your neighbor is your goal, the 812 Superfast should do the trick nicely.

Ten Thousand Villages The Place To Christmas Shop
D
o you like shopping? The answer may partly depend on one factor: whether you are male or female. Of course, it’s a generalization to say, “Women like shopping, men don’t.”. I’m sure we all know people this doesn’t apply to (my mother, for example, didn’t particularly love shopping). However, there is evidence that this isn’t a complete myth. My girlfriend actually loves shopping. I on the other hand, hate shopping. It has the ability to make me feel very incompetent. I believe many men “just dont know what to do and we dont like it”. I represent that section of men who try to find the chairs to sit down so I can “stay out of the way”. I will instantly receive back pain, foot pain almost magically. I am one of those men. I can hang in there for the first 30 minutes but after that I am unable to do it. I am comfortable where unhappy men sit and impatiently wait for their wives. I need rescue. WELL THE HOLIDAYS ARE APPROACHING. A survey found that men become bored after only 26 minutes of shopping, confirming my need for help. The survey found that 80 percent of men didn’t like shopping with their partners and that 45 percent avoided doing so at all costs. Almost half of all spousal shopping trips ended in arguments, with men becoming frustrated because they bought what they needed straight away, while their partners were still looking and taking too long to make decisions. The other factor was that they bought something WRONG. Women don’t like Vacuums for Christmas. So? What do you do around the holidays? The man who is smart will find a way to shop even though its in his nature to avoid “wasting time”, even if it kills him. Because you must buy a gift and your wife will kill you if you dont. We have a solution for you. You will have a present under the tree for her. So what can you do? A SOLUTION FOR YOU. A SOLUTION FOR YOU. Meet Joseph Meyer from Ten Thousand Villages Evanston. He will save you and probably your marriage. Some men have the gift of a great jump shot while other men have the gift to close big money deals. Joseph Meyer is a man who has a gift also, and that gift is to pick out presents for women. THE RIGHT PRESENT . Joseph personally will choose a purse for your girlfriend and give you a needed booster shot of self worth.

ALICE IN CHAINS
O
n October 10, 2019 Evanston Woman’s Editor in Chief, Linda Del Bosque and I had the honor of walking into the tasting room located in the FEW distillery. Little did we know we would be included in one of the most ROCK N ROLL experiences in Bourbon/ Whiskey history.
Romeo
By Romeo y Julietta
R
omeo y Julieta has been a premier cigar brand since its inception in 1875. Today it serves as the gold standard in the cigar industry. The Romeo by Romeo is a modern twist on their original Havana blend. With a dark chocolate, oily wrapper you’ll get notes of vanilla, coffee, and earth. I am intralled with anything that reflects love and this cigar reflects like the sun. A TRUE ROMANCE with every breath of this cigar. The leaves are rolled under the supervision of the elders as far back as 1875 this cigars tastes like a sweet kiss. A Chocolate and vanilla kiss is more of the description we profess. The masterfully constructed classic Dominican grown tobaccos surrounded by Indonesian wrappers provide an ever so slight but aromatic hint of sweetness with this 20-30 minute burn. The expert construction results in an easy draw with a consistent burn, and a very manageable white ash.
We were honored to meet one of the NEWEST and most exclusive creation of the FEW Bourbon families release named after the band ALICE in CHAINS. The Bourbon is a limited release bottle. Officially released October 11th, this Tequila infused heavenly Bourbon made its way to the public. It is intriguingly described as bold, sweet, and spicy, with grassy undertones of agave. The bottle itself is seriously cool. The eye within the mouth is “a play on seeing all that’s been spoken, Head brewer Paul Hetko states, “Nobody sounds like -Alice in Chains and that inspired him to create a Bourbon like no other. A awesome party happened the night it was released.
As a cigar lover and an EvanstonMan I believe in this cigar. It absolutly holds up to its reputaion and one of many “TOP TEN Cigars” under $10 Dollars. Yes, you read this correctly it is under $10 dollars in most US stores.

new restaurant that moved into a space on Central Street in Evanston. It’s neon sign delivers a warm and welcoming familiar glow. The neon allows the central street visitor to know they are in for a good time. The restaurant itself boast of being a full-service wine cellar. The wine cellar is kept at a comfortable 68° anyone who knows me knows, I am not a fan of the cold and Lush has proven to be comfortable for me. Because the wine cellar is sourrounding you. (Yes, your standing in it.)
The owner Mitch Einhorn was on hand to make sure everything went spectacular. We started with a selection of wines set up almost as if we were in a wine tasting. Each wine was explained in a manner to make me or any customer feel as important as Prince Harry. Then we recieved a cavalcade of appetizers which were so complementary to the selection of wines I couldn’t tell if the wine was created for the appitizer or if the appitizer was created for the wine. Our first appitizer was a caviar crowned hummas delicious enough to challenge any dish on the planet. The next dish was a mouth watering collection of the biggest mussells you will find outside of Chicago.
As table conversation advanced to how good everything was our waiter topped himself with the delivery of a charred octopus plate that you (the reader) should get in your car and go get right now. In the middle of the sitting I had the opportunity to taste Chase & Elderflower Liqueurs and wine made with grapes from Chile. Lush Wine & Spirits does stock a wide array of wines, from what I could tell lots of specialty ones. Guests are also encouraged to open any bottle of wine. (no corkage fee) Its amazing to watch other people realize their dreams of tasting a wine that they have never seen or known about. That was my experience. No, it was not over as placed right infront of me was a breaded cheese dish that sat on a pesto sauce. I didnt realize this was a present made to give our main plate the time to cook. The main plate was a 48 hour slow cooked half of chrispy, buttery succulent chicken. The crusted butter basted skin made the night an evening to never forget. This restaurant is special. According to Lush management it is an innovator in wine retail, Lush was one of Chicago’s first wine shops to focus on small-production products often found nowhere else. Lush Evanston is the culmination of the wine shop and a 5 star restaurant. They welcome all customers with a hospitality only rivaled by top restaurants in the country. I agree that this is special and will bring tears of joy and closure.

Evanston’s Backyard Home Movement
I
n the last year, more Evanston homeowners have started to catch onto an innovative way to use their backyard – a conversion of their old garage into a housing unit.
Nearly half of Evanston’s single-family lots can build a backyard home, also called an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). This new opportunity for creative, flexible housing comes after Evanston City Council’s 2018 ordinances to support ADU development. In April of 2018, Council passed an ordinance that legalized the rental of ADUs to non-family members. Five months later, they set up a citywide registration process for ADUs, demonstrating to Evanston homeowners that the City welcomes backyard homes across the community. With homeowners seeking to take advantage of this opportunity, the Evanston Development Cooperative (EDC) has emerged as the one-stop shop to design and build a small home in Evanstonians’ backyards. As the only organization that partners with homeowners through financing, permitting, design, and construction, EDC provides the simplest way to build an ADU in Evanston. EDC President Dr. Dick Co has spoken with hundreds of interested homeowners across Evanston. Dr. Co has realized that ADUs address several challenges for current homeowners, depending on the owner’s specific life circumstances.
T Hdesign E and build a creative space that feels wide open. “Empty nesters often think about how an ADU can become their S TEDC Y Lbackyard E homes will feature appliances typical future home when they downsize. Then, they have the option of a modern Evanston apartment, including a full to rent out the main house, to help their kids start a family G U kitchen, I D Edishwasher, and a washer-dryer. ADUs in it, or to form a homeowners association (HOA) and sell the typically have one to two bedrooms and bathrooms, main house condo unit. We are seeing Evanston homeowners interested in all kinds of creative ideas to do more with their land.” In addition to empty nesters, homeowners with aging parents see ADUs as an accessible housing solution for their loved ones to live near them. ADUs can also become homes for relatives with disabilities, or rental apartments that help homeowners offset property taxes with additional monthly income. Evanston’s growing ADU trend follows that of cities such as Portland, OR, Los Angeles, CA, Santa Cruz, CA, Denver, CO, and Austin, TX. Over 600 ADU building permits were filed in Portland in 2018, while Los Angeles reached 4,500 in 2019. Because ADUs remain illegal in the City of Chicago, Evanston has become the regional ADU leader. Under current zoning regulations, EDC’s research shows that two-thirds of Evanston’s potential ADUs would be two stories. In these cases, the home would reside above a two or three-car garage. The other third of properties can support an ADU entirely on the ground level, allowing for designs for full accessibility. When it comes to design, EDC has thought about how to make a small space feel big. Because of an exclusive partnership with a specialized external wall panel manufacturer, EDC’s homes are able to offer a healthy, comfortable interior living spaces. Their structural insulated panels (SIPs) limit the need for interior load-bearing walls, allowing EDC to work with homeowners to

depending on the size of the homeowner’s property.
“EDC goes from start-to-finish with our customers, building a home that’s right for our homeowners and right for Evanston,” Dr. Co said. “This is a new opportunity for nearly half of Evanston’s homeowners to rent out a unit to a local teacher, house their mother-in-law, or downsize into a beautiful, energy-efficient home.” EDC’s construction methods also lead to quieter, more sustainable construction. By framing an ADU in 2-3 hours with its SIPs, EDC substantially reduces noise pollution from construction in Evanston’s neighborhoods. Further, the SIPs reduce on-site construction waste. The SIPs make EDC’s homes 90% more energy efficient than the average house. Given the City of Evanston’s Climate Action and Resilience Plan goal to carbon neutral by 2050, EDC believes its ADUs and local, green construction workforce will be a critical part of reducing the community’s carbon emissions. With a backyard home in every alley, EDC believes that Evanston can remain accessible, diverse, and climate resilient for all residents. I’ve noticed that the term “Proactive Policing” is sort of a current buzz word among law enforcement agencies. What is your personal definition of “Proactive Policing”?
EVANSTONMAN
OFFICER YOU SHOULD KNOW
Proactive Policing to me means the presence of police both uniformed and plain clothed officers, engaging the public to learn their concerns as well as investigating and discovering crime.
Meet Officer Cesar Galindo
In what types of ways does Evanston PD incorporate proactive policing into their procedures, and/or an officers daily tour of duty? Evanston PD incorporates proactive policing by having specialized units dedicated to different aspects of policing i.e Problem Solving Team, Tac, NET, Juvenile/Adult Detectives, School Resource Officer, K9 Officer, and Patrol. On a daily tour of duty, officers are encouraged (as time permits) to interact with the community as much as possible and patrol areas of high call volumes for service.
What are two things that you want young people who may be apprehensive in terms of interacting with law enforcement officers to know about Evanston PD specifically?
The Ferrari
I encourage all youth to interact with police officers. In today’s society, social media is a main source of how the youth obtain their news. At times, certain content in social media may portray police officers in a negative manner. I encourage all youth in Evanston to interact with Evanston Police Officers and make the judgement for themselves. Evanston Police Department offers great programs geared towards the youth i.e Officer and Gentlemen club, Police Explorers, Bridge Program, and STARS program. Call 311 for more info
What are two things that you want law enforcement officers (who may be apprehensive in terms of dealing with youth) to know or understand about young people?
Where did you grow up? Rogers Park, Chicago, IL.
What do you feel you “overcame”? I grew up in a household with a single mother, and at times it would become difficult not having the father figure that a young man needs. Many youth may be growing up in the same situation, and they need to use the outlets that are available to them for continued success like uncles, cousins, brothers, teachers, coaches, etc. They are not alone in this and are not the only one.
When growing up, what was your idea of “The police” and how has that changed? When I was growing up I was told by my mother “if you misbehaved the police would take me away”. In a way, I grew up scared of the police and tried to avoid as much interaction with them as possible. As I grew older, I realized the police were not going to take me away, and I became interested in learning more about what they do and how they help their community.
As a police officer, interactions with juveniles comes as part of the job. I feel that at times a police officers busy shift can prevent us from participating with the youth. I would say maybe taking that extra time to directly patrol areas such as schools and parks where juvenile’s tend to hang out would be a good way a Police Officer can interact with the youth population in a positive manner.
What is one specific change, update or improvement within the City of Evanston that you believe would positively impact the public safety and/or quality of life for Evanston residents and visitors alike? I believe working together with the community to help build, restore, or maintain bridges can help us as a whole keep The City of Evanston a safe place for residents to work, visit, and live.

I dedicate this issue to the City of Evanston and the hard working citizens. I have grown a lot in the last few weeks and as I literally stand in another country as I am writing this editorial, I know have more appreciation today, than I had yesterday. Evanston is a wonderful community that is doing its best to walk into the future while preserving some of the best parts of the past. As editor of Evanston Man, I took the time to look unto the future. The retail sector of Evanston reflects the heart of the city. Evanston Man highlights Joseph Meyer’s for your dedication from home goods to women’s and men’s fashion, managing a store of volunteers, and best of all, creating a space for fair trade in Evanston.
