early a lifelong resident of Evanston, Judy Fiske has loved serving as Alderman for the past eight years. As an Alderman, she has made a difference in the lives of the residents in the1st Ward by focusing on small and big issues impacting the entire city. “There is nothing more gratifying than meeting with groups on opposite sides of an issue, listening closely to their needs and concerns, and then forging a solution that works for everyone. My goal is to continue to solve problems while making Evanston an even better place to live.” Fiske enjoys walking her dogs along side the lakefront, and seeing friends and neighbors who want to discuss what’s going on in Evanston. The Celtic Knot and Dave’s Italian Kitchen are casual venues Fiske enjoys meeting with friends and family, Fiske shares, “Though the most exciting part about running for Alderman is I am able to spend a lot of my time responding to calls and emails from constituents, whether it’s requests for help with city services or gathering input on important issues. Although I talk all the time with 1st Ward residents at our quarterly ward meetings, special neighborhood meetings, City Council sessions, and committee meetings, and literally when I see folks on the street, running for re-election gives me additional opportunities to hear from our neighbors. It’s always exciting to hear what’s on people’s minds!” E VA N S TO N W O M A N . C O M 5

elissa Wynne embraces working together to find solutions in a community that matters to her. Wynne shares, “Over the next four years our community will face daunting challenges within city government and within our community more broadly. I am passionate about Evanston, passionate about its people, and its promise. But I am also acutely aware of our challenges. Working together we can meet those challenges. But to do so, experienced leadership is critical. I believe that I provide our community with the combination of experience, judgment, and seasoned leadership skills that are imperative to meet the special challenges of the next four years. I would be honored to have your help and support in doing so.” Wynne enjoys visiting and learning more about the needs of 3rd Ward residents. Long walks along side the lakefront, and finding time with family, baking, reading fiction books are a several of Wynne’s favorite past times.

ROBIN SIMMONS

proud leader, resident, and advocate for small and minority businesses, affordable housing, and schools, Robin Rue Simmons is running for 5th Ward Alderman. A graduate of ETHS, Simmons recognizes the importance of providing sustainability and economic growth. Simmons proposed and passed a raise for local funding grants for small businesses at the City of Evanston. Simmons’ on the board of the Local Employment Program, understands the importance job development for the 5th Ward and the entire community of Evanston. Coining the phrase, “Together We Win”, and with endorsements of Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl, Evanston Firefighters Association Local 742, and 5th Ward Alderman Delores Holmes, Simmons is ready for the 5th Ward. Community, job development, and public policy are at the forefront of Simmons committed priorities. Simmons enjoys spending quality time with her family, going to church, and finding solutions to community issues.
VIRGINIA MANN
A
s an independent community activist, endorsed by current 6th Ward Alderman Mark Tendam, and the Evanston Firefighters Union, Virginia Mann is dedicated to Evanston. Mann’s efforts include founding TREE (To Rescue Evanston Elms), which saved elm trees and tax dollars with a program that is 98% effective, helped redesign the leadership for the Evanston Animal Shelter, and ended the proposals for both the redevelopment of the Presbyterian Homes and a 10 foot wide concrete path through Perkins Woods. “As Alderman, I can be a more effective voice for the 6th Ward and for Evanston residents.” She adds, “The most exciting part of running for Alderman has been meeting and talking with voters. Evanston voters are very knowledgeable and there seems to be a greater level of engagement than ever before. I hope this interest in local politics continues to grow as it is an important way we can all make a difference in this world.” Mann enjoys spending free time playing golf, reading, going to see the Cubs, Northwestern football games, and other sporting events.
LEE CABOT

ee has lived in the 1st Ward for 21 years. She has an MBA from Northwestern University, a BA in Economics and Political Science from Tufts University, and worked in marketing and consulting for over a decade. In 1999, Lee became the Director of the Evanston History Center, beginning a professional and personal focus on the City of Evanston that continues today. She has served in leadership roles on 10 volunteer boards, most recently as President of Foundation 65. Lee currently works at Northwestern and is a proud mother to her son, Luke, a freshman at Evanston Township High School. Lee shares, “I am running for Alderman to bring a style of leadership that is responsive, inclusive, collaborative, and visionary. I will bring the highest level of representation to all 1st Ward residents and businesses, and best practices to City Management. My goal is to protect what we cherish while achieving what we dream.” She enjoys long walks with her dog on the lake and spending time with her son.

ANN RAINEY
A
nn Rainey is a proud leader of South Evanston. In fact, she loves the 8th Ward. A few friends, a glass of wine combined with gardening are just a few of the things Rainey enjoys. Though these past years she has provided great service to neighbors, and together, they have brought tremendous resources, solved problems, and with small businesses/entrepreneurs creating a vibrant business district in the Howard-Ridge TIF District; transformed vision into reality. Rainey has worked very hard, and residents take great pride in their neighborhoods. There are several other projects planned—some renovation work at James Park, resurfacing and streetscapes along Howard from Dodge East, and increasing parking in the Clyde-Callan neighborhood. “I’m not sure 4 more years is enough time!” Rainey says. Rainey also adds, “Strangely, recalling past events, incidents, and political relationships that seemed routine at the time but when shared with others take on new meaning. For example, several years ago the council held a so-called retreat at the Levy Center with a professional facilitator. We put together our council goals and objectives and struggled with our Vision Statement. It was I that suggested, “Creating the Most Livable City in America.” Campaigning makes you recall things you take for granted but in many cases have a real impact on the city you cherish and for which you give you’re all!”

unning for 5th Ward Alderman, U.S. Navy Veteran, Carolyn Murray’s mission began 12 years ago upon her return from the military. In her free time she enjoys gardening, cooking, traveling, and spending time with her family and sharing memories. “Reengaging with my community, most familiar faces and some new residents I’m just meeting for the first time. Just listening to their concerns and issues with the faith they have in our community to challenge me with a new platform that will bring us all together.” says Murray.
C
icely Fleming is running for 9th Ward Alderman, because she is very committed to seeing her hometown become a city where elected officials make decisions that maximize the quality of life for all residents. “Sometimes our Council makes decisions that are financially burdensome to residents. I believe this happens due to a limited perspective and not considering equity in decision-making.” says Fleming.

Quad Indoor Sports: The Real Evanston “Bubble”

riving down Oakton just east of McCormick Boulevard, you can’t miss Quad Indoor Sports’ unique architecture. Call the zeppelin-like complex whatever you’d like -- just don’t call this dome a balloon.
interior is fantastic for indoor play, a highly versatile space capable of six fields of simultaneous play. The owners, who met as traders in Chicago in 1985, were leaders in their kids’ youth sports pursuits. Randy Mayne launched Evanston Youth LaCrosse, and Bill Kindra served as President of Chicago’s Powerstrikers Soccer Club. “Based on our own experiences driving all over the Chicago Metro area to play indoor games each winter,” Kindra says, “we wanted Evanston to have this type of a facility.” Founded primarily on a youth sports platform, Quad Indoor Sports naturally drew the attention of youth soccer, baseball, lacrosse and field hockey organizations. Soon, Quad welcomed men’s, women’s and high school soccer leagues, followed by a Latino soccer league and Loyola University’s varsity soccer team. Working 12-18 hour days, 7 days a week, the owners couldn’t be happier to be here. “The City, and especially Ald. Rainey, are incredibly supportive,” Kindra says. “We’re evolving as we grow, listening to our clientele and what they’d like.” For example, as of January 1 st , the concession stand began serving alcohol, including Evanston’s own Temperance beer.
“Balloon is the real four-letter word around here!” jokes co-owner Bill Kindra, who, with co-owner Randy Mayne, opened Quad in January, 2016.
“It’s an exciting business,” Mayne says. “We’re grateful to run it here in Evanston.”
The highly versatile space is anything but flimsy. Its insulated, multi-layered “skin”, anchored to an extruded aluminum channel embedded in concrete, is rated to withstand winds up to 90mph. With its two inches of grassy fiber flooring, backfilled with 250,000 pounds -- 1 ¾ inches deep -- of manmade crushed rubber and three redundant backup systems to keep the space filled, the stadium-like
