Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

with LINK PHYSICAL THERAPY

QUIZ:

Which of the following people should seek physical therapy?

¡Fiesta!

A: A snowboarder with a severe trauma to the knee. B: A competitive cyclist post collision. C: A woman in the postpartum period. D:All of the above

..........................................................................The correct Answer is D!

What does a new mom have in common with an injured athlete? A recent study that looked at women at 7 weeks postpartum showed that over 90% sustain severe musculoskeletal trauma to the pelvis after an “uncomplicated” vaginal birth, similar to the level of trauma experienced by extreme sport athletes. These childbirth injuries include ligament and muscle ruptures, severe joint sprains, bone fractures, and edema. Note: Typically, at 6 weeks, most women are “cleared” by their OB to return to all regular activities, without restrictions.

Sunday, October 14 1–4pm Levy Senior Center

A woman’s “core” is greatly impacted by pregnancy and childbirth. The core includes the deepest layer of abdominal and spinal muscles, the pelvic floor, and the diaphragm. These muscles form a container around our organs, spine, and pelvis to stabilize and support. After childbirth, a woman might experience the following: back/pelvic pain, bladder leakage, a pressure or “falling out” sensation in the pelvis, abdominal muscle separation, among other symptoms. These issues do not resolve on their own, and often create problems down the road. The standard of care for injured athletes, rehabilitation, is considered the norm. We think it should be for the postpartum woman as well. Giving birth is an extreme athletic event!

Benefits of

Acupuncture

“Does it really work?” and “Is it painful?” are the two questions I am frequently asked when I tell people I am an acupuncturist. Yes, it really does work!

Acupuncture is an effective form of medical treatment that has been around for thousands of years and has evolved into a complete holistic health care system. Practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine have used this treatment method to help people become and stay well. It supports physical and emotional health, and improves overall function and well-being. It is a safe and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems. Acupuncture is used to treat conditions like: • Pain management: back, neck, shoulder, knee pain • Headaches, including reducing the frequency an intensity of migraines • Allergies • Arthritis • Fertility • Digestive problems • Mood, depression, anxiety, stress • Sleep disturbances Acupuncture promotes natural healing; it is not a magical process or a quick fix. It works by balancing vital energy in the body. Acupuncture treats both chronic and acute conditions. Though, the longer you’ve had a condition, the longer it will take to restore your body so that it is functioning optimally.

It is worth mentioning that acupuncture is a gentler approach when compared to pharmaceutical drugs and treatment and results are not one size fits all. Everyone responds differently and it may take a number of sessions to treat the root cause of your symptoms. Being patient and trusting the process is key! I know you are still questioning, “but does it hurt?” Many first-time patients are concerned that acupuncture needles will feel like hypodermic needles at the doctor’s office. That is not the case! Acupuncturists use hair-thin, flexible needles that you will hardly feel when inserted. Most people feel the initial prick as the thin flexible needle touches the skin. Once the needle has reached its desired depth, most people feel nothing to varying sensations of a quick electrical impulse, a deep ache, or a heavy sensation. If at any time you are experiencing pain during your treatment, please communicate what you are feeling with your acupuncturist as they can either adjust or remove the needle causing discomfort. Most patients find acupuncture to be deeply satisfying often falling asleep during treatment and leave feeling relaxed both mentally and physically. If you’d like to minimize or prevent flare-ups in your body through a holistic approach, give acupuncture a try!

OPEN STUDIO PROJECT

Recently eight women from Taiwan participated in an Open Studio Project (OSP) weeklong art facilitator training to use the OSP process - expressive art and journaling process - to guide participants toward greater self-awareness. In 2010, OSP introduced the fee-based Open Studio Process Facilitator Training Program, eligible for professional CEU’s. This one-week on-site program offers professional development to art therapists, social workers, counselors and artists interested in augmenting their practices with a creative focus. OSP now claims over 60 certified facilitators employing the OSP process in their practices in 30 cities. Our own facilitators are certified art therapists, licensed counselors, psychologists, teachers and artists.
