Deconstructing Tool!!!! Clemson, SC, USA Spring 2012

The deconstruction of a wine opener, displayed in different drawings, allows for the viewer of the tool to look at the object in a more critical way and to start understanding the complexity of the tool. Through the use of analogue type drawing, a study of the tool was made. Along with drafting the tool in elevation and plan views, the use of sections is needed to add a deeper understanding of the tool.

The goal of this project was to create an object that had a balance between art and function. An exercise in form and function, this chair questions whether it’s main purpose is to be a functioning piece of furniture, or a piece of art to evoke a feeling. The concept for this chair was to make a solid object seam fluid and dynamic. The use of concrete and re-bar as the primary materials added a sense of solid and heaviness to the project, but the form of it makes it seem fluid and even comfortable. The next step in this project is to use the same technique and apply it to more pieces of furniture and eventually public concrete benches for general use.

WHEAT (FRAME)

Pop-Up Tent!!!!

Clemson, SC, USA Spring 2014 The re-envisionment of the typical pop-up tent in a modern and updated way for the use in the ever growing farmers market. Functional and aesthetically intriguing, the shape originated from the growth process of wheat along with the cornucopia which represents a successful harvesting season. The wheat forms the frame, while the cornucopia becomes the skin which together forms the pop-up tent. The assembly and transportation of the tent is shown in the diagram and is meant to be done by one person without the need of help. (Team: Austin Ferguson, Justin Harrison, Evan Arriaza)

Eames House Analysis!!!!

Pacific Palisades, CA, USA Spring 2014 The analysis of an iconic precedent of a modern dwelling, designed by Ray and Charles Eames. Understanding the original concept and framework of the house allowed for a experimentation and an update on the classic home. Taking the original concept, of inviting nature in, a step further by actually opening the home to the exterior and to connect both the home and the studio by sliding planes in the reenvisioned frame.(Team: Joseph Whitt, Evan Arriaza)

City Roots Woofing!!!! Columbia, SC, USA Spring 2014

The design and reimagination of the small temporary residential woofing shed for a small farm in rural Columbia, SC. Using only materials found on site and its surroundings, this design simplifies the purpose of the structure to providing a space for rest at its core. The use of re-purposed materials and passive heating and cooling limits the cost of this structure and is integral to the design and concept of the woofing shed.

War + Peace Museum!!!! Genoa, Italia Fall 2013

This war and peace museum in Genoa, Italy is based on the concept of impact, both literally and figuratively. The project aims to allow for public and private spaces for visitors to learn, and inhabit in their desired way. The pertruding volume in the center of the site is the primary way of circulation as everything is designed around it. It is a 30 feet object that pierces the site and serves as a public fountain on the top level, and a place for meditation in the museum level. The museum is dived in two, the war side and the peace side, both connected by the object, and each with a different architectural approach that helps invoke different feelings. High School Gym!!!!

Guatemala City, Guatemala Summer 2015

This project was a competition for a high school gym for Colegio Interamericano in Guatemala. I was a part of the team during my summer internship while working for Pemueller + Cohen Arquitectos in Guatemala. The concept for this gym was to create a sunken gym where the roof was at floor level and served as a green roof and park for the school and all the programatic elements of the gym would be below that. The structure is composed of five modular creases that play with the topography of the land and frames the view of five volcanoes that surround Guatemala City, each module representing a different volcano. The project received a second place award. (Team: Guillermo Pemueller, Victor Cohen, Juan Manuel Samayoa, Maria Andree Osoy, Evan Arriaza) 19

Charlotte Public Library!!!! Charlotte, NC, USA Fall 2014

A new paradigm for a public library in which it is seen as the democratization of public space. This allows for every patron of the library to feel invited and serve as a place that provides dignity to all members. This specific design is surrounded around the idea of providing user groups which are typically under-served in society a place specific to them where programing and architectural language is specific to the needs of the users, with the distribution of common and typical library services throughout the building.
