DAYS OUT

Portreath Beach A mostly sand with a little shingle beach set in a steep valley. To the western end of the beach are high cliffs and another smaller cove, which is seperated by the high tide. There are a couple of interesting rocks just of the coast The other end of the beach is bounded by a granite wall, which protects the narrow harbour. Once a busy port, importing coal and exporting copper but now only sheltering the occasional fishing boat On the left hand side, the beach has a stream running down to the sea. It is a popular family beach which, like many beaches on the north Cornish coast, is popular with surfers and in particular bodyboarders. Also it backs onto the small town offering most facilities including several shops and cafĂŠs There is a well-equipped newly built surf life saving club right on the beach adding to the surfie feel! Wave Summer Reads Read

It’s hard to define what makes a really great beach read. A dash of romance? A gripping thriller? A hint of escapism? Or heartbreaking historical fiction that will have us sobbing into our sunbeds? The truth is, it’s probably a bit of all of these. Holidays allow us a golden, guilt-free window of opportunity to read until we develop tan lines on our forehead (from all that frowning into the sun). We positively gallop through a mish-mash of different books, soaking up thrilling plot lines and discovering our favourite new authors as if our lives depended on it. So if your Kindle is looking a little lacklustre, it’s high time for an update. Get set to holiday in style with a look at 8 essential his and hers reads for summer 2016. SO CLOSE BY EMMA MCLAUGHLIN AND NICOLA KRAUS Having spent her whole life in her trailer park Florida hometown, Amanda Beth Luker finally thinks she’s found her way out: Tom Davis, a successful lawyer with politics on his mind. Amanda keeps close to Davis, ending up in Washington when he becomes a senator. But when Amanda learns of some serious moral indiscretions from Davis, her loyalty is tested. GRACE BY NATASHIA DEON In the 1840’s American South, 15-year-old Naomi escapes from her master’s plantation in Alabama only to learn that life on the run can be just as dangerous as life in captivity. She takes refuge in a Georgia brothel and soon begins a star-crossed love affair with a white man, which leads to a daughter named Josey. Years later, Josey finds herself in the middle of history with the Emancipation Proclamation, and the violence that ensues because of this. THE GIRLS BY EMMA CLINE In Northern California during the 1960s, lonely teenager Evie Boyd meets a group of girls in the park and is immediately enamored by their free-spirited lifestyle. They draw her into their soon-to-be-infamous cult, and as Evie spends more and more time with them on their ranch, her obsessions intensify. Little does Evie know, she’s on the path to unthinkable violence. HIDDEN BODIES BY CAROLINE KEPNES Joe Goldberg knows how to hide bodies. He’s hidden four in the past ten years, and now he’s ready to move out to Los Angeles and start over. His assimilation goes pretty nicely, but the problem with hidden bodies is that they don’t always stay hidden. HERE COMES THE SUN BY NICOLE DENNIS-BEN At a luxurious resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Margot works feverishly in order to get her daughter through school and save her from trading her sexuality for survival, as many women in their village are forced to do. When plans to build a new hotel threaten their home, Margot sees an opportunity for financial independence and the chance to finally express her feelings of forbidden love for another woman. THE SWEETHEART DEAL BY POLLY DURGAN Twelve years after a drunken pact, consummate bachelor Garrett is forced to confront his promise to marry his best friends wife, Audrey. Audrey is devastated

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

after her husband’s sudden passing and is struggling to navigate her new life as a widow and single parent. When Garrett shows up for support, feelings between Audrey and Garrett begin to grow. That is until Audrey finds out about the pact… DISCLAIMER BY RENEE KNIGHT Tipped to be the next Gone Girl (with a movie underway), and today long listed for the Desmond Elliott prize, Knight’s debut Disclaimer is the latest smash in the Suburban Noir thriller genre. Eerily calm on the surface with a network of dark secrets snaking their way to the surface and ‘don’t-quite-know-who-to-trust’ characters, the plot centres around a book unearthed during a house move that reads just like the life story of the main character complete with a deeply dark incident from her past that she’s never revealed to anybody. THE FISHERMAN BY CHIGOZIE OBIOMA When four young brothers from a city in south-west Nigeria play at being fishermen, they cross paths with a local madman/oracle and set in motion a devastating series of events. Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Obioma’s bloody coming-of-age story is told with such skill it’s hard to believe it’s his debut. LIVE AT THE BRIXTON ACADEMY BY SIMON PARKES WITH JS RAFAELL In 1982 Simon Parkes bought the building that would become the Brixton Academy for 1. He was 23. Over the next 15 years the Academy would play host to legends such as the Smiths, the Stones, Diana Ross, as well as some seriously debauched parties and the UK’s first legal raves. But, while the starry gossip is enjoyable, it’s Parkes’ account of maneuvering around the gangs, police and violence of 1980s Brixton that keeps the pages turning. Perfect holiday escapism, and a portrait of a lost world. THE NEW SPYMASTERS BY SPEPHEN GREY Forget Spectre, this book reveals how modern day spies and their spymasters actually work in the real world. In this extremely well researched book, journalist Stephen Grey breaks down how real world spies helped start wars (Iraq’s “Curveball”), prevent terrorist attacks (“Steak Knife”, an IRA member turned agent), and put the CIA’s hunt for Osama bin Laden back a decade (al-Balawi, a double agent described as Al-Qaeda’s James Bond who assassinated CIA operative Jessica Matthews). The murky stories of spycraft are so gripping and thoroughly documented you’ll be checking over your shoulder on the beach.

Q

uite understandably, virtually everyone I meet would like to talk about the EU referendum. The choice in this referendum is economic security and global influence as part of the EU, or a leap in the dark. I believe we’ll be stronger, safer and better off in Europe because we will get to keep access to the Single Market of 500 million people – Britain’s home market – with a say over the rules of doing business across Europe. That means more jobs, lower prices, and more financial security for local families. Vote Leave say they’ll walk away from the single market and negotiate a new deal, but they can’t explain what it would be and how long it will take.Vote Leave can’t guarantee that the funding Cornwall currently receives from the EU will continue. The truth is if we left, the EU would not give us a better deal than they have for themselves. Independent experts have said leaving the EU would harm our economy, with an average hit of £4,300 for each UK household and £36bn in spending cuts, which would hit the NHS. If we leave, experts say jobs aren’t safe, prices will rise, mortgages will be at risk, and funding for your local school or hospital will fall. It is a risk not worth taking. In Britain, we choose to co-operate with our neighbours in Europe because it makes us stronger, safer and better off. Nobody forces us to do this and the EU does not control us. We retain complete control of our currency, public spending, interest rates, crime and security policy, as well as public services such as healthcare, education and public transport. The Prime Minister’s EU deal protects us from further integration in Europe – known as “ever closer union”. So it’s simply not true that Britain is “run by Brussels”, as many of those wanting us to leave like to say. Free movement for EU passport holders allows British citizens to live, work, study or retire in Europe, of which 2.2 million of our own citizens take advantage of. As a result of the Prime Minister’s deal, European passport holders coming here have to work and pay in before they can draw benefits. It’s not a free for all. When we choose to co-operate with other countries, as we have in the EU, we do so of our own free will. Our parliament decides, no one else. Of course cooperation involves give and take, but when we compromise, it’s because it is in our national interest to do so. The EU is a vast trading area giving huge opportunities to our

to advertise call ashley on 07800986216

businesses and exporters, bringing investment and jobs to Britain, and providing opportunities for Brits to work and travel abroad easily. Being part of the EU makes our economy stronger and magnifies our influence in the world. We would be cutting off our nose to spite our face if we left. In the modern world, engaging in cooperative decision-making gives us more control, not less; it make us stronger, not weaker; it gives us global power, not the illusion of sovereignty. We joined the UN and NATO in the 1940s, and the G7 and EU in the 1970s, precisely to enhance our power. Britain is stronger with a fair EU immigration system and access to the Single Market, our home market of 500 million people. People from other European countries should not be allowed to access benefits until they have paid into the system, and that is exactly what the Prime Minister has secured for us. But access to the Single Market means we must welcome those who come here to work hard, pay their taxes and support our public services. Vote Leave want to go too far, ending free movement completely. That means losing our access to the world’s largest free trade area and a say over the rules of doing business right across Europe, costing us jobs, pushing up prices and leaving us with less money for public services like the NHS. We would compromise opportunities for Brits to work, study, travel and retire freely in Europe, and we could see our border checks moving from Calais to Dover. Over 100 000 EU citizens work for the health and social care sector. One and a half million people are employed in businesses owned by EU citizens, who have contributed £20 billion more in taxes than they have taken out in benefits. The facts are clear: the overwhelming majority of EU citizens in Britain are contributors, not freeloaders. So let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. We must ensure fairness without sacrificing our membership of the Single Market, keeping our economy strong and securing opportunities for the next generation.

BEWARE – ADDERS!! As I write this on Flora Day, there’s a thick mist swirling around outside, there’s a pretty stiff breeze blowing, and of course it’s drizzling. Not the sort of weather that we enjoy walking our dogs in – well, some of you might but I don’t! – and it’s also not the sort of weather that encourages adders to emerge from their nests. However, they are out there… One of the Rosemullion vets Siobhán McInerney, who works in the Helston surgery, wrote a very good piece on adders and the risk to dogs for our Facebook site (www.facebook.com/ rosemullionvets) which is both topical and very instructive, so I make no apology for reproducing it here. As the weather has warmed up, Rosemullion Vets have been seeing their first handful of adder bite cases. Before you start panicking, the most important thing to remember is that treated promptly and appropriately, approximately 97% of cases make a full recovery. The following information will help to answer some of your questions regarding adder bites: 1.What do adders look like? Most adders are distinctively marked with a dark zig-zag running down the length of the spine, and an inverted ‘V’ or ‘X’ shape on the neck. Adults are

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

50-60cms long, and their colour ranges from light grey/brown to almost black.

Harry who was bitten on the face but made a full recovery

2.When should I start to worry about my dog being bitten on a walk? Most adder bite cases occur between April and July. The snakes generally hibernate from October to March, but if the weather is warm enough they can be seen as early as February and as late as November. Most bites tend to occur in the afternoon when adders are more active and when the heat from the sun is at its maximum – they love to sunbathe! 3.Where are adders found? Their habitats include sand dunes, moorland, heathland, rocky hillsides and the edges of moorland – well, that’s pretty much the whole of the county! Particularly favourite spots seem to be the Towans around Hayle, and Goonhilly Downs, but they’re also about on the coastal paths too.

4.What are the signs that my dog has been bitten? Most bites occur on the face, inside the mouth, or the front legs – and sometimes you will hear your dog yelp or cry when an adder has struck. Bites will cause swelling of the affected area within two hours, and it’s often dark-coloured and can become quite severe and painful. Sometimes you will also see two puncture marks in the centre of the swelling. Your dog may be lame or seemingly just ‘below par’, but in more serious cases they may have pale gums, bruising, drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea, and be quite lethargic. Worst case scenario is that they collapse, have breathing difficulties, start having tremors, and may deteriorate into convulsions. 5.What should I do if I think my dog has been bitten? If possible try to carry your dog to your car to try and reduce the spread of the venom via their circulation. Keep him quiet and warm while contacting your vet. Using a cold water compress on the affected area may help to limit some of the swelling. 6.What will my vet do to treat my dog and how will he respond to the treatment? Treatment for adder bites involves pain relief, intravenous fluids to support the circulation, specific “European Adder an-

to advertise call ashley on 07800986216

ti-venom” given intravenously in some (but not all) cases, antibiotics, and they will be hospitalised for monitoring. We don’t use the anti-venom on all cases as there is a risk of an allergic reaction of the dog to it (which could be worse than the bite), but in a lot of cases there’s no choice. The severity of the bite, and therefore the treatment that your dog will get, depends on •The location of the bite: face and mouth are worst as the venom quickly gets into the circulation from the hefty blood supply to the face •The size of dog: most commonly it’s terriers who are affected, but the bigger the dog the bigger their circulation and the more dilute the venom •The amount of venom injected by the snake, thought to be worst early in the season •The amount the patient moves post-bite, hence why we advise carrying the dog to a car •Any pre-existing disease your dog may have, such as kidney or liver problems (which would reduce the dog’s ability to detoxify the venom), or heart disease (which might intensify clotting problems and circulation failure due to shock). However, these serious effects only occur in around 5% of cases, so don’t panic!!

The nursery is looking really good at the moment, full of fresh new plants. In fact we have so many plants that we have run out of tables to put them on, again! We have a great selection of hanging basket and bedding plants at very competitive prices which we grow on at the nursery so your plants will be local. We can even make up your baskets for you. Here is this month’s diary to help you along. Plant of the month: Roses.

Diary for June

•Plant up containers and hanging baskets now that the risk of frost has gone, hopefully!! •Plant out bedding. Now there are no risks of frost •Lift and divide clumps of crowded bulbs •Keep newly planted trees and shrubs well-watered until they establish, that means all of this summer. •Pinch out the centres of plants before they go leggy, particularly plants like fuchsias and hanging baskets plants •When sweet peas start to flower, keep picking them to encourage more flowers •Dead head old flowers to encourage new flowers •Cut away old bulb foliage as soon as it has died down •Stake any tall flowers like poppies and delphiniums to stop them being blown over in the wind •Pinch out any side shoots on tomato plants and feed with a good tomato feed when the first truss is forming •Harvest salad crops regularly and re-sow every 2 weeks to keep a continuity of supply

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

It has to be Roses in June. Fantastic selection of colour, types and wonderful fragrance. Roses are fairly easy to grow and look after. Just remember they are hungry and thirsty plants so feed and water them well. Dead head as flowers finish to get repeat flowering.

•Harvest new potatoes. These are normally ready about 10 weeks after planting •You still have time to plant runner beans in early June, ideally planted straight into the ground •Prune plum and cherry trees. •Make sure the greenhouse is vented on warm days. •Check plants daily in the greenhouse for water and water if required. They dry out very quickly in a greenhouse •Damp down your greenhouse on hot days. This will increase humidity and help deter red spider mite •If we have a long spell of dry weather, set the lawn mower higher to reduce the stress on the grass •Water pots and baskets regularly, even if we have had rain they may well still need watering •Keep bird baths topped up with fresh, clean water
