his month Falmouth will T evoke Britain’s favourite poem,

Wordsworth’s ‘ Daffodils’, as thousands of daffodils brighten shop windows and star in a flower show and exhibition. The town’s school children will choose the name of Cornwall’s newest daffodil, and daffodils galore will be given away when actress Dawn French is installed as the Chancellor of Falmouth University. Daffodil fever begins with a free photography exhibition ‘Then & Now: Cornwall’s Daffodil Families’ which runs from March 5th to 28th in the foyer of the Municipal Buildings on the Moor. It features the history of daffodil growers from the Isles of Scilly, and the Penzance and Falmouth area. One such family are the Hosking brothers James and Jeremy of Fentongollan Farm, St Michael Penkivel on the banks of the Fal estuary . On top of supplying the bulk of vegetable seedlings for Cornwall’s farmers they sell cut daffodil flowers and bulbs by post. Many of their 250 varieties are new or unique and even exported to Holland. Daffodils are the perennial stars of the Falmouth Spring Flower Show with their own 29 specialist classes at the Princess Pavilion, Gyllyngdune Gardens, March 21st and 22nd.

They vie for attention with over hundred further displays which include camellias, magnolias, rhodendrons, orchids and floral art. Falmouth daffodil grower Ron Scamp is the show’s president and winner of the Royal Horticultural Society’s gold medal 19 times for daffodils he has bred over 40 years. His family run ‘Quality Daffodils ‘, grows 3,000 varieties which are sold as bulbs worldwide. He has given bulbs of an un-named variety of daffodil to the town’s school children to grow for the show and to choose its name. Ron says,‘The new daffodil has been at least ten years in production and had now reached the stage where it

needs a name. It is short stemmed, has yellow petals and an orange trumpet. I am delighted the children are doing this as they are the show’s exhibitors of the future.’ Among the show’s eleven classes for children are dinner plate miniature gardens, vegetable animals and scare crows.A new cup, the Youth Group Challenge for 12-16 year olds, has been given by Tempus Leisure the sponsor for the 2015 Falmouth Spring Festival which opens on March 12th with ‘Paint The Town Yellow Day’ when thousands of daffodils are distributed to shops and shoppers by school children and students. This event will be repeated on March 26th when Dawn

French is installed as the Chancellor of Falmouth University . Closing date for flower show entries is March 15th; there are no entry fees and exhibitors and children under 16 get into the show for free. Free entrance also to browse the trade stands at the Princess Pavilion for Easter presents, food, plants, garden ornaments – AND daffodils . TM PAUL COCKERHAM MAinVE both small animal and large animal Has more than 30 years’ experience of Rosemullion Veterinary Practice Ltd veterinary practice and is a director

CRUCIATE LIGAMENT INJURY IN DOGS This sounds very technical, and yes it is, but it’s also one of the commonest types of lameness that we see in dogs – and they can be any age and any breed, so don’t think that you can get away with it…! So, I thought that this month, when the weather’s getting better, and we’re all walking our dogs more, it’s a good time to give this orthopaedic disease a bit more coverage. One of our Veterinary Nurses, Grace Warmington RVN, has produced a really informative leaflet on the topic, which I’m sure will prove very helpful to our clients. However, before we start, bear with me, but we need to do some anatomy. Here’s a front view of a canine stifle, which is the equivalent of your or my knee joint: It all looks frightening, but essentially, the bottom end of your – and your dog’s – thigh bone (femur) simply rolls on the top of the shin bone (tibia) – and there’s nothing holding the whole thing together other than a fancy

set of (very strong) ligaments,

with pads of leathery material, the menisci, between the two bones. The cranial cruciate ligament is inside the joint and stops the shin bone sliding forwards over the thigh bone each time you put weight on it by taking a step forwards. OK – SO WHY DOES IT RUPTURE? There are two main reasons. The first is that the ligament simply degenerates like fraying rope –basically, it’s past its sell-by date. Certain breeds are affected, particularly Labradors, Rottweilers, Boxers,West Highland White Terriers and Newfoundlands. The second is traumatic rupture – your dog simply tears it by forcing its leg to do what it shouldn’t: eg. throwing a ball causing the dog to twist/turn suddenly with the weight on that leg.Ask a footballer – they know all about such things! HOW CAN I TELL IF MY PET HAS A CRUCIATE LIGAMENT INJURY? Well, they limp – when it’s traumatic then they’re pretty lame and tend just to tip their foot to the ground. Or the limp may just get worse when the ligament is simply giving up. SO WHAT IS HAPPENING INSIDE AN AFFECTED JOINT? Apart from the pain – think sprained ankle and then some –if it’s left untreated, arthritis will come on quickly, and what started off as an injury will turn into a painful disease for life – repeat, for life. Look at these xrays which show a sideways view of the stifle / knee joint, and the difference between the normal and the arthritic joint: the arthritis has loads of extra bits of

new bone formed, the cartilage has turned to sandpaper, and the whole thing just hurts to move…

Left: Normal joint Right:Arthritic joint

AND WHAT’S THE TREATMENT FOR THIS PROBLEM? Well. Non-surgical management is only recommended where a general anaesthetic or surgery is going to be a problem – but you could improve things with physiotherapy, exercise modification and antiinflammatory pain killers. But, the best treatment is surgery. After all, something’s broken, so you’ve got to fix it – and medicines just won’t do that. What’s called a TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) is the best technique, which alters the angle of the front of the shin bone by inserting an implant into the bone, to adjust the forces through the joint. You can see here a wedge place into it, forcing the front forwards, which reangles the whole joint and works a dream!

This is the gold standard for treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture and we do it frequently at Rosemullion. More

to the point, our cases are not discharged that day, with the risk of any immediate post-operative complications left to you, the owner to sort out, but are carefully monitored by our 24/7 on-site nursing staff, until we’re happy for our patient to go home. AFTERCARE IS CRUCIAL TOO Immediately after surgery the patient will not be using their leg - well, you wouldn’t would you?! However, walking should improve as healing takes place over several weeks, though some small breeds may continue to be “skipping” for a longer period of time. Pain relief is essential, usually with opiates and antiinflammatories. Exercise must be restricted to start with, whilst preventing activities such as running and jumping –as one of the chief problems we face is that dogs feel too good too quickly! Hydrotherapy may be recommended from 6-8 weeks after a bit, as it can significantly improve the quality and rate of healing following surgery, increasing the chance of successful return to full fitness. It can help relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness by increasing the range of motion in joints and rebuilding muscle. PHYSIOTHERAPY In conjunction with hydro, at Rosemullion we offer follow up physiotherapy appointments to enable your pet to regain full strength and activity following a potentially serious injury. Let’s hope it never happens, eh?

On the 1st March we will be celebrating our first year at Cornish Garden Nurseries. It has been a tough first year, trying to re-build the nursery from such a low point. Much of the nursery has been re-vamped and we hope that all our customers like it and that if you haven’t been to the nursery before or not for a long time you will come and see us soon. Many of the plants that we have been growing on over the winter are now starting to come out of the polytunnels and filling the nursery up for the new season that is about to start. Let’s hope we have another great summer like last year. We still have a good selection of fruit trees. It’s not yet too late for bare root planting. Here is this month’s diary to help you along.

GAMES REVIEW The Order 1886 - PS4

Sony’s third person shooter puts you in an alternate London in 1886, You play a knight of the order whose members famously included King Arthur and his knights of the roundtable. Because of the industrial revolution, New powerful weapons turn the tide in the battle with supernatural creatures known as half breeds but a new threat emerges in the form of the lower classes rebelling against the rich and the social order, with the Knights supporting upper classes. The gameplay and graphics actually make it look like this is the first game that will really define what next gen gaming is all about. The seamless flows from cut scenes to gameplay is what Sony have done brilliant for years in their Uncharted franchise and it’s no surprise it works brilliantly here. The list of weapons and gadgets are very innovative and look like we’ll be seeing that eras version of common place weapons today. Excitement meter: 10/10

Dead Or Alive 5: Last Round - All Platforms

The 3rd updated version of the fifth game in the popular franchise comes to next gen. If you love beat em up games and are a fan of the franchise. Then this game will be right up your street. In terms of extra content this offers very little. You get a group 4 core fighters with the option to purchase the rest on DLC. Excitement meter 6/10

Dragon Ball Xenoverse - All Platforms

Another game from the hugely popular anime series, This next installment of beat em up game sees the game set in full 3D destructible environments. Fighters can traverse the levels free-roaming in very large spaces and can be fighting on a platform, go in the air, and fight underwater. They run when on the ground, and swim while underwater. The players have some freedom to explore the planet Earth as it exists in the Dragon Ball universe along with a handful of other locations, including a mysterious new city, now revealed as Toki-Toki City, which is the point of origin for the game's new character. XenoVerse is also the third Dragon Ball game to feature character creation.

out and about this spring? Two Stunning Walks to brush off those Winter Blues... MEUDON & HELFORD RIVER WALK

A walk from Meudon Hotel through lush gardens, secluded beaches and along the banks of the Helford River. You can stop for lunch at the Ferry Boat before returning to Meudon via Carwinion’s footpath that runs through their bamboo plantation. Once you’re back at Meudon why not stop for a cream tea and refreshment, or full afternoon tea with all the trimmings? For a shorter walk, just walk to Rosemullion before turning around and heading back to Meudon. WALK INFO Start point : Meudon Hotel End point : Ferry Boat Inn or Meudon Hotel Distance : 3 miles or 6 miles if you return to Meudon Hotel. ST MAWES HEADLAND WALK

St Mawes Around the Headland takes you past St Mawes Castle and rewards you with great views across the Carrick Roads to Falmouth.
