‘Each person loses hair at a different rate, but this has nothing to do with how you shampoo your hair. Using the correct products is important on a day-to-day basis as this gives you a quick fix to improve the feel of your hair, but it is only cosmetic.’ He says . ‘Supplements can play a part in hair growth. Iron is important, as it is a good protein for hair growth.’ I have found a few really good hair strengthening products on the high street such as: Shu Uemura’s The Art of Hair, moisture velvet nourishing treatment. Organic nourishing coconut milk shampoo Burt’s Bees Avocado & Butter hair treatment

18

SPAFAERY

There are so many different products out there it’s just a case of finding the good one. If you have suddenly started losing a large amount of hair though I would recommend seeing your GP. Once you have ruled out anything that requires medical treatment, then decide what kind of treatment would be best for you, as well as high street stores there are also well known essential oils that have been proven to work in hair loss and thinning hair, I like to use Argan oil, Almond oil and Castor oil. I use them on my head and also my eyebrows, it’s always best to remember the same doesn’t work for everyone so you may have to try a few before you find the right one for you.

BB Creams

Looking for a flawless finish without having to cake your face up with foundations? With the sun shining we all want to look fresh faced and flawless. BB stands for blemish balm; it’s a moisturiser, concealer, primer foundation and sunscreen all in one. Is this too good to be true? here I have put some of the latest BB creams to the test.

Dior Skin Aside from being a bit more expensive than the high street BB creams Dior nude gave me a rosier complexion, this BB cream is supposed to adapt to each skin tone but I have to say the coverage was good but I felt like you could tell I was wearing it, unlike the others.

Mac Prep+Prime I chose this Mac BB cream because it was a bit different to the others as it was designed to be worn as a primer as well as retexturising the skin and providing UVA/ UVB SPF 35 you can wear this as a BB cream or under foundation. I found this a great all in one, all round great product.

L’Oreal Youth Code Luminise BB Cream I don’t normally use L’Oreal products but heard this was a good BB cream so decided to try it, the texture was creamy and fluffy, and also had good coverage. It had a lovely fresh smell to it which I enjoyed, the cream lasted all day and again the coverage was amazing. This BB cream is up at the top with the Garnier.

Maybelline Dream Fresh Ok, so I have an uneven skin tone so for me the thought of not wearing a foundation makes me feel a little exposed, but I can honestly say the coverage with this BB cream made me feel great. Not only did the coverage last all day but I had an obvious glow that didn’t look oily, very impressed with this.

Garnier Nutritionist Miracle Skin Perfector

Light and smooth, this bb cream contains mineral pigments and vitamin C. I have to say it’s my favourite, it’s very easy to apply and makes my skin look smooth and healthy, the coverage is great and I feel confident just wearing the cream and nothing else, it also covers my uneven skin and any blotchiness I have. Dark lipstick makes a comeback this fall. Here are my tips on how to wear it.

D

ark lipstick is the latest 90’s trend to make a comeback this fall with a gothic Bordeaux style and metallic feel. We saw designers such as Vera Wang and Zac Posen rocking this trend, from the catwalk to the red carpet we saw celebs of all skin tones from Beyonce to Miranda Kerr looking stunning in deep burgundy and nearly black shades.

Text By: Sacha Shaw

To keep a dark lip modern, my tip is to keep everything else looking healthy and natural, if applied well, which is what I am here to help you with, just remember there is always a time and a place and outfit, much like a red lip you need to take the time to apply well.

22

SPAFAERY

Keep the rest of your make up simple and natural.

Since your lips clearly do the talking, choose a dewy foundation that matches your skin tone to really give your skin that fresh, healthy look. Try use a bit of bronzer as you don’t want to look too gothic, chalky pale white is so 90’s.

Select a complimentary lip colour. Dark lips look most natural on deep skin tones, obviously the lighter the tone the more dramatic the look. Decide on the look you want and pick a shade accordingly.

Always use a pencil.

Most people forget to use a pencil, or maybe think it’s not important, well it is. It is necessary for ensuring a symmetrical application, especially as darker shades are less forgiving and any mistake outside the lines will show out like a sore thumb, for longevity either use a brush of remember to chop on a piece of toilet paper to really press the pigment into the lip.

A

fter repeatedly bleaching, dying and stripping it, my hair had well and truly been through the wars, making it brittle, frizzy and high-maintenance. Sick of wrestling with bristle brushes, hot irons and sticky serums, I decided to take my sorry-mess of hair for a professional smoothing treatment. I headed to Senses Salon in JLT, who use the Brazilian Blowout range, with celebrity clientele, including Jennifer Aniston and Halle Berry, it was voted the number one professional smoothing treatment 4 years running. The formaldehyde content is extremely low at 0.2% and it's FDA approved, so it should repair my hair rather than add to the damage. The consultation with owner/manager Zaida was very comprehensive; I explained what my problem areas were and she guided me knowledgeably through the options. It was decided that I would go for the Acai Professional Smoothing Solution to counteract the years of abuse I'd put my hair through, with an extra Split-End Treatment for my ravaged tips. Everything was explained to me thoroughly, from initial hair wash with oxygenating shampoo (to open the follicles of my 'virgin' hair) to the aftercare instructions. Zaida even labelled the bottles I bought as I was leaving, so I knew which ones to use first. Besides the hair washing seats, that are wonderfully comfortable and recline all the way back so you're not at a break-neck angle, what makes this place unique is the time and care taken to explain everything to you, in an informal yet knowledgeable manner. After my treatment, the frizz was gone instantly, and my hair felt baby-soft and looked so shiny and healthy that I couldn't help but eye myself vainly in every reflective surface I passed. Two weeks later, and I am still super pleased with the results. The greatest thing about Brazilian Blowout is being able to wash and go without the obligatory 25 minutes with the GHDs; buying you more snooze-time or an extra cup of coffee in the morning. If you're tired of unruly, high-maintenance locks, go for a Brazilian Blowout. And if you're sick of stuffy conveyer-belt salons that rush you through, Senses is the perfect antidote.

Beauty cheat secrets Find your best eye make-up look for any season

W

e all know that make up and fashion trends aren’t for everyone, so how do you know if you have the best shadow/liner combination for your shape and colour? Here are a few basic ideas and tips to help you along.

Shape

Deep set eyes

The key is to brighten the eye as much as possible, also make sure you have concealer at the ready to cover dark circles and any other colour inconsistencies around the eye, use a lighter shadow than your skin tone so it highlights the eye, apply this from the lid to the brow, and also remember to put some in the corner of the eyes to create an open effect.

Big eyes

You’re lucky; you have an advantage to everyone else. Keep your brows thicker and feel free to use dark colours and as always, highlight your brow bone.

Heavy lids

Text By: Sacha Shaw

Make the best of these sultry eyes and get your brows groomed, it will maximise the visible space, also try to focus on the lower lid and lash line, use a brown liner instead of black as it will bring natural focus to your eyes and balance your lids as well as making your eyes look bigger.

30

SPAFAERY

Big eyes

Small eyes

Follow the same basic rules for deep set eyes, but do not hesitate to line your top lid, as this will help create an eye opening effect, remember shimmer shadows reflect off the light and will create the appearance of bigger eyes.

Hazel eyes

Green EYES

Greens tend to get away with a lot of dark colours; it gives the eye more depth and stands out more. I would go with plum tones or burgundy for a cooler look but if you’re wanting a darker shade then eggplant or mauve would look perfect.

I find Hazel eyes are very versatile with colours. These blended irises often have flecks of gold, blue or green, this allows you to play with colours. Choose colours such as green, silver, gold, brown, purple or blue.

Colour

Blue EYES

You don’t want too much of an icy stare so to avoid this I would stick to warmer colours such as earth tones and coppery shadows, green and brown.

Brown EYES

Dark eyes are very mysterious; the kind people can simply just lose their self in. Really accentuate that with neutrals colours that aren’t going to distract from your natural colour, if you really want to wear a colour though I would suggest using it sparingly instead of too full on.

Giorgio Easy Chic Armani Winter

F

or winter 2013, Giorgio Armani draws a “no complex” style, for confident women who play with men dress codes humorously. The collection shows contrasts with these eccentric but still classic women suits, mixing bright, vibrant colors: poppy, orange and fuchsia with grey shades, on Prince of Wales, velvet, silk or organza. The silhouettes go from iron-creased bermuda shorts to skirts and dresses with a precise but edgy design, set off with felt hats and toned down by flat shoes. In opposition to the these silhouettes, Linda Cantello, International Make Up Artist, imagines for Giorgio Armani, a pale matte skin, subtly rock and glamorous. « Clothes were very colorful so we imagined with Mr Armani a monochrome face, with no blush or contour » Inspired by the 80’s, the makeup is matte black and white. A new conception of the smokey eye, with a matte black “neo classic” look. First, Luminessence, the new brightening and anti-dark spots skincare range, is applied to regenerate skin’s light and obtain a defaultless matte result. Maestro concealer is smoothed on under the eyes and gives the last touch to a unified skin. The « smokey eye » is reinvented with a black shadow swept around the eye in a "teardrop" shape, stretched to the inside of the eyelid and under the eye.

yourself Dip dye jeans

t this point, we can all confidently say we have experimented at least once with just about every kind of denim trend out there. Whether it’s ripping holes into our favourite jeans to give them that distressed look, splattering them with paint, or dying them, we are always on the lookout for intriguing ways to update our denim. That said I was ecstatic when I found the latest trend to hit our attention, dip-dyed denim.

Douse them almost completely in bleach, the resulting look is incredibly cool and gives a laidback beach vibe.

The idea for this D.I.Y comes from the catwalks this fall, inspired by Dries Van Noten and Jef Verheyen, Dries Van Noten turned out a number of visually striking seperates that featured an ombre effect of bright colours and gorgeous ceramic floral prints fading into white.

DIY TIPS & TRICKS

BODY SCRUB Castor oil: Castor oil has many benefits but what I mainly use it for is hair regrowth, I get my eyebrows threaded every month and have always had bald patches for some unknown reason, usually I just fill them in with a pencil but on the days I really just can’t be bothered or I’m trying to go for the au natural look I find myself been stressed out by it. When I was last at my monthly threading session I asked one of the girls what she could suggest and

Amazing healthy and soft hair: We all know living in this heat really can take its toll on our hair, mine is so thick that it’s hard to maintain anyway but add the heat and humidity and I look like something from a horror movie, I have tried so many different things and apart from oil I found a DIY hair mask that really works for me, make my hair feel naturally healthy and soft, I also noticed I had less hair fall out too. Ingredients: ½ cup mashed avocado 1 Tbsp lavender oil 1 Tbsp coconut milk 2-3 crushed vitamin tablets Add all the ingredients together then massage into the hair, once all your hair is thoroughly covered smooth out and put on a shower cap, leave for about 1-2 hours before washing out.

Even skin tone: If you’re like me and have uneven skin tone you will appreciate how frustrating this can get, especially when your skin dries out in the sun so easily. Recently I heard a great homemade tip to help reduce this: rose water and Milk. I know, what an odd combination, the lactic acid in the milk apparently helps exfoliate the skin and the rosewater gives you glowing complexion, so I decided to try it out. After a few weeks I can definitely tell a difference in my skin tone, and more than anything my skin feels a lot more fresh, healthy and soft. Ingredients: ¼ Cup water 2 TBSP milk 2 TBSP Rose water Mix together in a spray bottle, use daily for 3 days. SPAFAERY

Natural make up remover:

Softest legs ever:

This is an insanely beautifying tip, lately I have been terrible at removing my makeup and have certainly seen the difference in my skin, my pores seem bigger and my dark circles even darker, this could also be all the late nights but I decided to try this natural make up remover I had been told about, I couldn’t believe the difference it made, you have to actually stick to doing it every day but trust me you won’t regret it. It’s so simple and removes all make up, dirt and oil.

This is one of my favourite tips for soft legs, since moving to Dubai I have to shave my legs at least once a day and even then they don’t feel amazing, I think it’s something to do with the sun that promotes hair and nail growth but this tip is a sure fire way of banishing those pesky stubbly bits.

Ingredients: Aloe Vera Almond Oil This will also help with dark circles and eye puffiness.

40

SPAFAERY

Ingredients: 1 ½ cups of milk ¼ cup of honey 1 TBSP lavender oil & lavender flowers Slowly prepare the ingredients by mixing together, add to a warm bath then lie and relax for 30mins after shaving. As well as been ultra-relaxing I guarantee your legs will be the smoothest they have ever been.

hen been told someone is diagnosed with diabetes, what are the first things that come to mind? No Sweets for you, Mister! Daily walks and healthy lifestyle. But is that it? Shouldn’t we work towards preventing the onset of such a life threatening and life long prevailing disease if we can? It all lies in the kind of lifestyle that W Even if you have a desk-bound job or your out and about, you must always find time for yourself to de-stress, go for a walk in the park, or maybe get active by trying a dance class. All you have to do is try to avoid the monotony in your life, where you find yourself travelling to work, staring at the laptop/computer all day long and then back home to eat and sleep, all this continues day after day. Break free from that tedious repetition. Maybe that’s what you need to keep yourself healthy.

Diabetes will not stop you from living life, as you want. Nor does it mean you'll necessarily have other serious health problems in the future. All you need is careful management so that you can ensure that you control the condition and it doesn't control you. This should allow you to stay healthy, active and to live a full life. o you usually find yourself tossing and turning late at night? Do you feel extremely debilitated, cranky even? Most people don’t realize that diet may as well be the reason why you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Most of our dietary habits contribute to a good night's sleep. Saniyah gives you a list of items that you should avoid and this should help you sleep like a baby.

Caffeine While it is important to note that caffeine cannot replace sleep, it can make us feel more alert by blocking sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain and increasing adrenaline production. Coffee isn’t the only culprit, some OTC medicines that relieve aches, pains and itches and those that prevent or cure diseases, like tooth decay and athlete's foot or even others that help manage recurring problems, like migraines, contain caffeine, too, as do many teas.

Fluids Water is great for weight loss and staying healthy but can have the unfortunate side effect of waking you up for middle-of-the-night bathroom breaks Especially if a large meal with excessive fluids is taken before bedtime Move your last food to at least 4 hours before bedtime; Try to avoid drinking fluids 60-90 minutes before your usual bedtime to make sure you actually spend all night in bed. Tomato Based Products Have that plate of curry with Tomato based food, at least few hours before tucking in at night. They have a tendency to cause acid reflux and heartburn, which will prevent you from having a good night's sleep and you don’t want that. Aged And Fermented Foods Scientists say they contain an amino acid called tyramine(an amino acid found in aged and fermented foods,). This releases a substance that stimulates the brain and keeps you awake. Aged cheese, smoked fish, and cured meats all contain it—so if you MUST have a cheesy snack before bedtime, stick to the fresh ones, like mozzarella. Greasy Foods And Sweets Avoid fatty meals; Not only does greasy takeaways ruin your diet, they are also a recipe for sleep disaster. Research suggests people who have fatty meals in the evening clock fewer hours of total sleep than those who don’t, so stick to lean meat and plenty of veg. It's best to avoid sweets. Sugar, candy, cookies, cakes and soft drinks increase the sugar level in the blood, which is usually followed by “minimal levels”. The foods mentioned above can cause a sense of exhaustion and fatigue, making it difficult to rest well. Crudite Raw broccoli, cauliflower and carrots will make you feel full quickly...but will still be moving uncomfortably through your digestive system long after you pull up the covers. [Of course, still eat these, but have them at lunch or for a snack.

“Memories of destruction” Aydin Aghdashloo The Farjam Foundation

I

naugurated on the 2nd October 2013 by ‘The Farjam Foundation’, this exhibition aims at bringing selected works of an Iranian Maestro, ‘Aydin Aghdashloo’ from The Farjam Collection.

He is distinguished as one of Iran’s modern masters, his multifaceted career as an artist, art historian, critic, curator and teacher, has been a driving force behind the mid 20th century artistic and cultural renaissance within Iran. He has played a fundamentally important role in conserving the Middle Eastern ancient artistic civilization, while successfully connecting its rich heritage to modern times. It is rare to witness a prominent artist connect the technical expertise of an ancient art history with a contemporary vision and that is what makes Aydin’s work truly exceptional.

Memories of Destruction is the artists most acclaimed and well-known series. Aghdashloo uses icons of Italian as well as Persian classical paintings, subverting them by destroying much of the familiar imagery. The inspiration behind these selected works of the artist from what I have understood is that there is a direct relation between life and death. Everything ends one day and when something ends even the memory of it is scarred and hence the scarred images. Every beautiful piece that comes under the title of this exhibition is scarred through tearing, crumpling, burning and scratching the canvas. Mr. Farhad Farjam as well as Aydin Aghdashloo’ both believe that art can be used to identify and express the intricasies of a remarkable past and ever-changing present, as well as linking the Eastern and Western diasporas. Born in Rasht, Iran in 1940, Aghdashloo began his artistic career by imitating the great European masters. At age 14, he became a skilled reproduction artist and often would be commissioned to mend damaged paintings and calligraphy works. Years later, after perfecting and conceiving his own style, his works have been featured at numerous gallery openings, private collections and auction houses.

Aghdashloo’s rare talent has reserved a place for him in the pantheon of modern art as one of Iran’s most highly regarded art historians and critics on pre-Islamic and contemporary Iranian art. 54

Mr. Farhad Farjam, founder of The Farjam Foundation, comments, “Aydin is an old friend of mine and his vast knowledge and expertise has contributed to my personal journey as an art collector. The Farjam Foundation is pleased to welcome an artist of such depth and complexity.”

Text By: Saniyah hassan

Using tenure and experience, Aghdashloo has played a prominent role in inspiring and inaugurating numerous art and cultural initiatives in Iran. Most notably, he participated in the establishment of the Kerman Museum, Khoram Abad Museum and Reza Abbasi Museum in Iran. In addition to being a prominent curator and author, he has co-produced The Way of Seeing, a television series about the history of Persian painting.

1.What kind of art is the gallery about? Farhad Farjam has been collecting art through out his course of life. His collections are named as Farjam Collection and this gallery aims to bring out each of these collections in every exhibition we put up. All of the works on view in the exhibition are drawn from the private collection of Farhad Farjam. 2.How long have you been in business for? We’ve been open since 2008, with the city of Dubai as base, the Foundation has partnered with local, regional and international organizations to realize this vision.

“ A Painter, much like a journalist, does not merely report, he visualizes the future with hopes of a world in which justice, truth, equity and compassion are absolute and vital. ”

3.Do you sell the art that is displayed? Since Farhad himself owns everything, it is just a showcase of his collection and none of it is for sale. 4.What does art mean to you? More like, what is art in your own vision? Art is in my words is a medium to express thoughts and bring cultures together. Its East meets west, its words one cannot express. Everything can be expressed in the form of art in one-way or another. 5.Do you think the gallery scene has changed in the last five years? Ten years? Do you think it will change substantially in the near future, especially in Dubai? Yes! Definitely. Since the time we’ve opened the amount of walk-ins we’ve had has increased. It’s the younger generation who are showing interest in this field. The generation now seems to have no boundaries when it comes to choosing what they want to do in life. And people now have come out of their shell and started appreciating art even more. 6.Tell us something about the exhibition that you are holding right now? Since October until December, we are holding an exhibition names, “Memories of Destruction” – by Aydin Aghdashloo. The idea behind this collection is inevitable destruction resulting in the transformation of the human condition. Whatever he created in this genre referred to a beautiful past laced with sadness, since he realized that past is endlessly linked with our future and all beings will inevitably cease to exist.

“I restored many miniatures in this period, and witnessing their rebirth invoked a reverse process in my own paintings. Masterpieces that I restored and resurrected became once again crumbled and torn in my paintings.”

“Exquisite bowls with embossed Kufic inscriptions and glazed turquoise hues are depicted falling against desert storms and deep skies, their shattered fragments hovering across the ground.”

rom a perspective of an expat who has been living in UAE for the past 16 years, even if I am not an Emaratiyya, I consider myself a child of this nation like a lot of my friends. I wouldn’t wish myself to be anywhere else but here. This colorful country with its even more vibrant cities offering everything that a big city has to offer. We have always treated 2nd December as the birthday of a really close friend. Why is the national day celebrated?

Even though the country is booming as a colorful hub for the tourists, it has also become home for many expatriates. People with humble beginnings have together helped develop the country to reach its heights. Hold your breath as the country with the tallest building in the world holds a party for its birthday. One can only imagine how amazing the 60

atmosphere of the metropolis must be on its National Day Festival. On this day, you see everyone coming together as one, taking part in all the activities that are lined up. The celebrations provide a great insight into the culture, arts, music and everything this place has to offer. Being a part of the celebrations always instilled that amazing feeling of belongingness and how we expressed the spirit of national day with so much pride and joy. The party never seems to end. There are national day flags, decorations, fireworks, families taking videos recording every moment of the wonder night with a little wish that it extended much longer than a single day. This year, Emirates celebrate its fortysecond year in the spirit of Union. It is one of the unique places where one can witness the balance and coordination between tradition and contemporary. There are events lined up for everyone from all ages. Some of them are: - Massive firework show in different

places all over the UAE. Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Al Ain etc. The late evening skyline of the country will be nothing less than spectacular. - Aerobatics show - Car parade: In Abu Dhabi, the country's capital, celebrations are held in the city's corniche where people join into the crowd of cars that were completely covered with national day makeup. Last year’s Union Car Parade gave out Dh100, 000 in prize money to the 10 most flamboyant and creatively designed cars, with the overall winner receiving Dh25, 000. -Women-only beach Celebration: This takes place in Abu Dhabi with a public ladies-only event on Al Bateen Beach, with a range of activities along the 700-metre waterfront. Even though its one single day, the spirit that is displayed by the arabs and expats both show how much UAE means to us bringing out pure love and proudness towards our nation through out the years that have passed and the years to come.

This day symbolizes a formal nationalization from the British Protectorate Treaties that ended on 1 December 1971. After the on-going difficult negotiations with the rulers of the other cities it eventually led to unification of the seven emirates, which combined to give birth to the modern-day United Arab Emirates that is now a highlight in Middle East. His Highness Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan was appointed as the president of the newly formed UAE. He quotes, “Thanks to our ancestors who challenged the adversities of time and the misfortunes of life. Due to their fortitude, our generation is living in prosperity and grace.” The most significant day in the history, National Day is a celebration of honor, pride and patriotism. National Day is known as Al-Eid Al Watani in Arabic.

n the digital age of 'I'm-just-tweeting-to-tell-you-I-blogged', printing's death knell has been sounding for years. But lovers of inky fingers are not dancing on its grave just yet. A couple of places that are resolutely cuddling up to the tangible are The Magazine Shops, two coffee shops in Media City and DIFC, specialising in high-quality coffee and magazines.

3 The Museum of Moving Image Long before panicked spectators fled from the Lumiere brother's showing of Train Pulling Into a Station in 1895, there was already a rich history of experimentation with the moving image. Akram Miknas, the chairman of MCN, bought his first optical toy thirty years ago, beginning a lifelong passion. He has since amassed a rare collection of over 130,000 artifacts, spanning 200 years, and culminating in the birth of The Museum of Moving Image in Dubai, which houses 1300 of these unique objects. It's the nation's most comprehensive collection of its sort, and one of the largest of only a handful of similar collections in the world. The private collection covers everything from the Camera Obscura to the advent of cinema and beyond, including some of the most wonderful antiques. The most remarkable for me was a huge fully working 12 seat Kaiser Panorama; peeping into the beautiful rotating 18th century 3D images was truly spectacular. Another fascinating object was the Mutoscope, which is an early motion picture device, used to create the earliest versions of home videos. Perhaps it was the romance of nostalgia, but after turning the reel of an early twentieth century Mutoscope, I desperately wanted one for myself. This interactive element truly added to the experience, and playing with the replica optical toys gave me a real sense of what a spectacle these moving images must have been at the time. The gift shop is a treasure trove of charming optical toys. I couldn't resist buying some replica 19th century Handshadow Cards and an Emotional Flip Book with 200 facial expressions ranging from joy to longing and despair. I not only left with new optical toys, but with a burgeoning fascinating with the spectacular history of the moving image. What's always fascinating about private collections is getting a sense of the collectors' singular passion, and this unique collection really brings that to light. SPAFAERY

Hotels offer a remarkably diverse range of food and beverage outlets, partly because they serve not only their own guests but also attract large numbers of local residents. Their restaurants cover everything from coffee shops to fine dining, specialty outlets and the standard of service is on par with the best in the world. Aside from the hotels, small eatingplaces are to be found in all parts of the city including Deira, Bur Dubai, Satwa, Jumeirah and Dubai Marina. We see a variation in the restaurant menus from

How to

stay fit

during winter

F

or most of the world, the transition from summer to fall and fall to winter is never easy. You still crave those warm summer nights and the idea of seeing a temperature below your age is frightening. For those experiencing the weather shift and all that comes along with the change of seasons, stay motivated to exercise and maintain your once outdoor routine. Exercise can actually help clear your winter blues and chances are you’ll be in tip top shape once the weather is scorching hot again. Here are some tips to stay motivated and to keep the body you love in fighting fitness form.

We all know a fit healthy body doesn’t happen overnight, as much as we wished it did. Many people see the colder weather as an excuse to wear layers and hibernate in the comfort of their own home, I know I do. However, you don’t get that killer body sitting on the couch eating mince pies, wearing oversized jackets and scarves that cover every inch of your flesh. This can be tricky because it’s necessary to stay warm, but doesn’t serve as any kind of motivation at all. Wearing fitted clothing will help you stay focused and remember why you worked so hard during the spring to attain your summer body. Focus on all the effort you put in beforehand and the good it made you feel when you started to notice the hard work paying off, look forward to the warmer months, the pool parties and beach activities. Constantly staying in shape and working up a sweat will take the pressure off of losing the winter weight.

Keep your eye on the prize

Switch routines

Try a winter sport

If you’re a person who loves to exercise outdoors, use the change of weather as a time to try something new and change your workout plan. Map out a new routine at the start of each season, I know it sounds like a lot of work but you will benefit from the changes in your daily routines, there are thousands of ways to stay in shape so literally choose anything.

Winter weather offers a wide range of fun activities to do that can involve the whole family. Try a new winter sport like ice skating, skiing or snowboarding. Taking up a new sport activity will keep you interested and motivated. Incorporating a new activity is beneficial for both you and your family.

Also a good way of sticking to your fitness regime in the winter is to buy packages at your local gym, like yoga classes, Zumba or even just a personal training package. If you’re used to exercising after work or in the evening, try to make adjustments and workout in the morning. At the end of the day, you’re more likely to opt out of exercising if you’re tired, plus exercising in the morning gets it out of the way so you can cosy up on the couch at night.

An exercise DVD makes it easier to exercise any time any day any season. Research some DVD’S online and find the types of exercise that work best for you, and that you would like to try at home. If you have limited space try Yoga or Pilates as it involves lots of mat work. If you have more space then I would choose Zumba which is more of an intense workout but fun at the same time. Remember many libraries have exercise DVD’S that you can rent out so give them a ring.

Invest in fitness DVD’S

Preventing getting sick It’s a fact the more fit and healthy you are, the less likely you are to get sick during the winter. It’s no surprise that the change in weather brings runny noses and winter coughs. Keep moving, as easy as it is to stay indoors and feel sorry for ourselves it just won’t help. Put the right foods into your body and make sure you continue your healthy lifestyle. No one wants to be ill so spend extra care.

“Exercise can actually help clear your winter blues and chances are you’ll be SPAFAERY in tip top shape once the weather is scorching hot again.”

Beach Tennis Sumayyah Abu-Hulayel tries her hand at the new sport taking the country by storm. "Stop posing and start playing!" This is the call to action from the coordinators of beach tennis, the dynamic beach sport taking UAE by storm. Beach Tennis is the rowdy offshoot of volleyball and tennis, often played against the backdrop of loud music and MC's; it's a more raucous and quick-paced game. There is some disagreement about where Beach Tennis originated, but it has been played in Europe for over a decade and is now the fastest growing sport in the world. While governed by the International Tennis Federation and popular on beaches worldwide, beach tennis has recently been promoted by Bernard Aoun and Fadi Antar in this region. With tournaments in Abu-Dhabi and plans to bring them to Dubai, this is likely to rival beach volley as the beach game of choice. You can find a couple of courts based on Kite Beach in Dubai every Friday and Saturday, so I decided to head over and try hand at the sport. I approached the courts with a degree of trepidation; I'd spent my life dodging gym class and the prospect of playing on the busy Kite beach filled me with dread. My hesitation was short-lived, as enthusiastic entrepreneurial duo Fadi and Bernard can raise excitement in the most reluctant observers. Always a tennis enthusiast, Bernard spotted a group of people playing beach tennis, but realised he couldn't find the equipment anywhere in the region. He joined forces with Fadi, and a few months later, they are the sole distributors of all the beach tennis equipment in the Middle East, from the paddles to the nets and merchandise. They're also the organisers of the majority of beach tennis events in the country. Keen to promote the sport and champion local talent, Bernard is convinced Dubai is the perfect location for the sport due to the year-round beach weather. Brimming with enthusiasm for the game and their burgeoning business he says, "It's great; my office is the beach!" On the courts, the atmosphere was so inclu76

as demonstrated by multiple beginners playing like naturals; with some volleying breezily back and forth, and others played more competitively. This is the great thing about the game, depending on your level; you can make it as gruelling as you want. After my calves recovered from their sandy workout, and keen to indulge in healthier weekend pursuits, I was back again the following week to practise my serve by the surf. If you're a sports pro or just a beach lover after a new challenge, it's well worth heading down to Kite Beach. Whether you're there as a spectator, or a participant, I challenge you not to have fun! sive that they managed to put me, a selfconfessed sports-phobe, at ease. They explained the rules; the courts are similar to volley courts, but the net is different, and scoring system is almost identical to regular tennis, with no-advantage at deuce, no second serve and no let. They showed me the brightly coloured paddle bats and depressurised balls (which aren't allowed to bounce during play.) Their enthusiasm was pretty contagious, so I grabbed a paddle, and gave it my best shot. Initially, we just volleyed to and fro, but with a little coaching from the guys, I was -almost- playing the game. To my surprise (and despite my sporting shortcomings) I had far more fun than I'd had on a beach in ages, and running on the sand was excellent cardio, even when I missed a hit. I wasn't the only newcomer to grab a paddle; I saw so many strangers give up on their tanning quest and join in the fun. It turns out beach tennis is actually pretty easy to pick up,

Arrange the fruit in a narrow strip, lengthways down the centre of the pastry to within 3cm of each shorter edge. Fold the 2 shorter edges over the filling and then fold over 1 long edge and tuck the fruit firmly underneath the pastry. Brush with any remaining orange oil and fold over the other edge, so that it overlaps by at least 5-6cm. Carefully transfer the strudel to a large oiled baking sheet. Move aside - ‘Cocosia Artisan Chocolates’

H

ave you ever been to a place where passion for chocolate comes alive in different flavors? Flavors & recipes that you wouldn’t dare put together. But then, Qudsia Karim, The chocolatier and founder of Cocosia chocolate, dared to explore possibilities and bring them all to you, collaborating the traditional art of chocolate making with contemporary flavors. She gained her expertise after she undertook a Master course at Ecole Chocolat in Vancouver, to become a certified Chocolatier. To learn more about formulation of recipes, she studied Chocolate Technology from Barry Callaebaut Academy in Chicago. She worked as an apprentice with Thierry Mulphaut in Strassbourg and then went on to explore the finery behind chocolate making in various parts of France, like= the Valrhona institute in Tain le Hermitage and The French

Pastry School in Chicago. To understand chocolate further, she visited other places in Europe, including Schwyz and Badenbaden. Between her courses and training. The best thing is; she invents each recipe of the chocolates and prepares them herself with the right blend of chocolate and every other ingredient with zero preservatives. Most names of chocolates sold were inspired from her travel to different places around the world, where she picked up local techniques and then mixed it with her own. Artisan chocolates being confined to Europe; she decided Dubai would be the perfect place to set up Cocosia. People in Dubai are interested in unique artisan chocolates but fail to find it here and resort to import. Now why import when the perfect place for brown heaven resides in your neighborhood?

ork takes a toll on everyone and trust me when I say that some weeks are so exhausting that all you want to do is to take a break. Well I decided to explore UAE in the form of my break from work (not to mention it was my Birthday desire to go out and discover the unexplored lands).

So the destination chosen was Abu Dhabi and try out the amazing places for myself from the exquisite Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque to the adrenaline pumping Ferrari world and of course the awesome Yas Waterworld. But above all my favourite part was the rejuvenating spa treatment I got as a gift that really made me the most pampered girl in the vicinity.

The Treatment Complete Indulgence Package Upon my arrival I was offered the welcome drink – cucumber lemonade with mint where I was given the brief for the treatment which includes “Foot massage + Body Scrub+ Facial + Scalp massage”. The area is in an oval shape which includes an indoor swimming pool and a Jacuzzi. Rooms are found around the pool at the corners.

The spa room is artistically set- the décor, lighting and the music set the relaxing mood and the moment you step into it you get transferred to a different world altogether- you forget all the worries, stress and just find yourself floating into this calm abyss which instead of being a scary place is actually the peace you were hoping to find. As it was my first ever spa treatment my therapist made sure to calm my paranoia and irrelevant fears by answering my questions and gave me the ultimate guarantee, “you would sleep like a baby after the treatment”. The Body Scrub was an essential part of the package. The benefits of body scrub are not limited to a healthy glowing skin but also it improves blood circulation and helps fight cellulite and aging. The Scalp massage was my favourite- the soothing hand stroked my head made me remember the good old days when my grandma would stroke my head and tell me all the amazing bedtime stories. I would recommend the Complete Indulgence Package at Body and Soul spa to all the ladies out there. Treat yourselves to the most relaxing and rejuvenating spa treatment the city has to offer.

SPA

THE ADDRESS at DUBAI MARINA

T

Text By: Sacha shaw

his month we reviewed The Spa at The address, Dubai Marina. The Spa is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life; from start to finish we were treated like princesses in every way. Our treatment was the hot stone massage which lasted for 80 minutes, was a combination of warm aromatherapy oils, with heated Balinese stones and strong massage techniques that evoked a lasting impression and is said to have instant benefits that will melt away your stress and tension. This massage is supposed to ease pains and balance key energy points and it did!

After changing into the mandatory gowns and slippers and instantly feeling like I could go take a nap, I was treated to a refreshing cucumber and mint smoothie shot before heading to my pre-treatment relaxing sauna and steam room. After my time in the sauna I was taken into my room where I would have my treatment, my room was spacious and idyllic. I had a big window that had views of the pretty city lights without the added noise. I quickly laid down taking in the lovely aromas of essential oils. It was the perfect ambiance.

This was my first hot stone massage and I must say I was a little reluctant, after having it though I will definitely be having the treatment again. To be honest my whole idea of the hot stone massage was wrong, I had pictured the therapist coming in and simply placing hot stones on my back and leaving me there for 80 minutes. Well I couldn’t have been more wrong; this technique is very hands on and penetrating-the-muscles massage. The therapist started by placing hot stones on my pressure points, and then proceeded to knead away tension using the hot stones and oil all over the rest of my body. This was the perfect massage and most effective one I have had so far, it had the perfect balance of an indulgent relaxation as well as feeling like it was working deeply to release my tension. The ladies were very professional and made me feel pampered and special, and the environment was the pinnacle of luxury in the heart of our busy city.
