Editor’s Letter

Oh, Ramadan. Every year we turn a lunar page, privileged to witness a collective act of peace in a fast-paced world; one that’s forgotten the importance of amity. A sacred month of spiritual significance and refinement takes over our international UAE with faithful devotion in the Muslim community. Though us Non-Muslims may not practice Islam, we sure are lucky to walk amidst positive energy waves emanating left, right and center. And still, some of us shockingly complain: “I can’t eat in public” “I can’t drink water during my boxing class” I have to ask, really? Many expats fail to sympathize with a devoted group of peaceful people who demonstrate remarkable self-discipline for an entire month of religious worth. What a shame. Which brings us to this July’s issue of Eveningz; it carries a message devoted to understanding, supporting and respecting the Muslim community. The Foreigner’s Dos And Don’ts piece (Page 119), together with our Iftar Etiquette guide (Page 103), will shed some light on your cultural dilemmas. A taste of Arabian Fashion, as well as Health and Beauty, will unveil local history and cultural heritage through traditional arts and crafts, abayas and talented local artists like Mariam Al Mazro (Page 55). As you read these pages, think about your Christmas. Though many of our Muslim friends remember us on most Christian holidays, we routinely fail to recognize theirs. While flipping through Eveningz, let’s stop and reflect on how we will practice understanding and respect of our beloved UAE’s Islamic culture this Ramadan and thereafter.

Ramadan Kareem,

Cristina Maag

Escada: flashy and vibrant like Miami.

23 | Eveningz | Fashion

T

here is no single piece or collection from Escada which is not categorized by elegance. This summer their uber-chic designs provide glamorous ways to dazzle. Escada is moving past the gilded affluence, gold buttons and padded shoulders that once defined its style. “Many people still associate Escada with a world that doesn’t exist anymore and that people no longer want—a superficial world of showing off what you have,” said Peter Littmann, owner and founder of Brandinsider. This season the big E showcases the strength of women. The collection personifies the nature of the modern woman who looks poised and classy.

Fashion | Eveningz | 24

Women love glamour, and this summer Escada’s given them the perfect chic wardrobe menu. The style house wants to give their clientele easy and graceful choices which convey femininity in every stich. With bold colors in the limelight, the latest garb offerings will instantly draw all eyes on you.

25 | Eveningz | Fashion

Fashion | Eveningz | 26

The outfits are fairly straightforward. A startling mishmash of hues, patterns and cuts takes its inspiration from the international flair of Miami. Abstract prints and geometric accents along with artsy touches will create your style rule. Strong contrasts and joyful colors are the unquestionable stars of the new line.

27 | Eveningz | Fashion

Sexy curves hugging the body’s countours dressed in canary yellow, dusky snow and leafy green. Embroidered laces and hand-woven perforated leather tunics create harmony of a new summer frill. The distinct architecture and modern art, palm trees and music, all came together to fascinate Escada’s creative room.

El-Jammi Gozalli’s ultra-chic accessories revealed

37 | Eveningz | Fashion

To bring you matchless options to mix it up this July, Team EveningZ headed towards Dubai Marina for a chitchat with young Turkish fashion designer, El Jammi Gozzali. As we sat with El-J in her artistic workshop, we couldn’t help but notice the colorful purses, shoes and turbans. Her hip girly style started at the door. As we started the interview, giggles were in the air. Listening to 20-year old El-J was stirring. The drive and ambition in her words scratched the surface of a dream that seemed to stand at her feet. I grew curious. Her study fields were Radio and Television from AUD, an answer I didn’t expect to hear! How had such a young sensation made it in the glamorous fashion world without that founding piece of the puzzle? El-J innately came, saw and conquered. “I was always fascinated by fashion and glamour,” she said smirking. “I found what I wanted to do while I was trying my hands on different things.” She created her own label in 2012 with innovative styled t-shirts. Why T-shirts? “We normally take t-shirts for granted,” she explained. “I

wanted to design something casually modish. So, I went with something different. Something to help people carry their look from day to night by simply adding an extra something with accessories.” Adding some handmade shoulder cuts, as well as chiffons and silk pieces, the young designer also put together a fabulous pearled T-Shirt collection. We couldn’t help but touch on the elephant in the room: keeping yourself chic throughout this July. I asked her for a tip or two. El-Jammi smiled in a witty manner and said “BY BUYING MY TURBANS”. El-J’s world is with out a doubt unique. Her valiant and vivacious headdresses are no exception; consider them your bold fashion statement.

“A head wrap will not only give the option to keep yourself modest but it will add grace to your simple outfit.”

We wanted move away from commercialisation to a more individual approach, with bags that reflect personality without being overtly rebellious and maintaining a certain timelessness,” says Tahan. Spotlight On The UAE’s Upcoming Talent

I was sitting nervously at Dubai Mall’s Starbucks, surrounded by pure opulence. As I sipped some water from my less-thanchilled bottle, I glanced to my left and caught a glimpse of France’s Cartier. I peeked to my front and Switzerland demanded attention with its elegant Chopard. I searched for the lady I meant to meet and only found a century of watch making – that originated in London – glaring back at me. It was Rolex. I kept turning, searching for a locally designed brand. I couldn’t find one. Was I not sitting at the Dubai Mall? I sighed with frustration, until I looked up and saw a traditional chic, black Abaya walking my way with a smile. Meet Mariam, a self-taught, Sharjah-based fashion designer whose signature style includes bright colors, bold prints and playful cuts. Fascinated by fashion even as a young child, her interest in the craft escalated upon seeing her mom and aunties designing their own Abayas and evening gowns with different materials. A creative and amusing spark was lit. As a student of finance, Mariam Al Mazro believes it all came together by accident, or maybe it was fate; but the start can also be backtracked to her old tailor’s persuasion. Mariam began with a two fold design: a pair of shirts which she later revealed to her sister – a fashion designer – and loved them instantly. Acknowledging her sibling’s talent, Mariam’s sister requested she design a few more to display alongside her collection. These were the beginnings. Stepping into a world of fashion with tiny steps, stylish flavor and innate talent.

Fashion | Eveningz | 56

57 | Eveningz | Fashion

As she vividly recalled her journey, she explained “it is not necessary to have a degree to make it in fashion but it helps.” Though Mariam’s studies were a numbers game, in 2007 she established herself as a fashion designer during the elegant Sharjah Brides Show. Exhibiting her Henna collection influenced by Pakistani and Indian culture under her official brand name Mimi proved that anyone can do anything, and she did it with bravura. Why Mimi? “Well,” she sighed with her lovely smile, “it was my private family name. It was only used by those closest to me and is therefore very close to my heart”. Mimi: a personal touch for a personal brand, which has since its birth created waves in the local fashion industry. With several appearances under her belt from Dubai’s Bride Show to Dubai Fashion Week, her collection is a timelessly elegant option for the modern heiress. And it’s all about the prints, prints, prints. Her latest collection Country Elegance portrays feminine sophistication in casual and formal wear. Strong proposals of grace lead to Country Elegance developing recognition in a circle of women who are asking for classy prints in daywear and eveningwear. Mimi’s passion for her work coupled with her ability to listen to her customers, make her a dynamo. To her, fashion is creativity signifying one’s beauty with style and confidence. The future for this young designer is very bright. With a career that’s still gaining momentum by the day after an eight-year track record, she continues to prove that she has a wow factor that gives her edge. With flawless finishings that compete with international favorites, Mimi maintains a garbed lead.

Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it. — Yves Saint Laurent

Simple ways to hydrate your skin and standout this sunny season

65 | Eveningz | Health & Beauty

W

ith the Sun shining bright all day long, our skin easily dehydrates. During the summer heat our skin turns towards a vulnerable direction. Where else? Allergies, wrinkles, tanning and patched skin. Dry skin can attack you any time, whether its 15 or 50 degrees, it’s important to take of care of your skin properly year round. The bright sunrays lead to the quicker generation of dead skin cells, which can also lead to other problems. To enjoy a healthy and glowing summer, follow these simple steps:

Hydrate DRINK – plenty of water is the easiest way to standout. The two birds with one stone of beauty: by drinking plenty H20, you can keep your skin and your system thoroughly hydrated. Make sure you quench your skin’s thirst! H2O is your beauty essential for summer.

Berry Cheery The best way to freshen up your skin is to consume anti-oxidant rich fruits. This will help to flush out impurities. In summers, we always long for having chilled thirst quenchers. Add seasonal fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries to your morning muesli. While sitting in the office, keep a box of mixed berries on your desk to munch on throughout the day.

Brushing Up A dry body brush will help boost your skin’s natural detoxification process by improving circulation and stimulating the lymphatic system. Take an off, for couple of minutes before showering by using a quill and brushing your skin.

Exfoliation The dry brushing will get rid of dead skin cells. A good exfoliating scrub will give your skin that smooth polish.

Nourish Scrubbing and rubbing will remove all the dead skins. As a result you may feel slight dryness, but don’t worry. Simply moisturize, moisturize and moisturize. Apply your moisturizer especially before going to bed for extra softness.

Under Cover Sunscreen is a must – a sunblock with SPF 20 is perfect for everyday use. Keep your sun protector in your handbag at all times. Protect your skin against harsh UV rays to retain that sweet moisture.

Oud – A symbolic Middle Eastern fragrance

I

f the Middle East would have a symbolic scent, it would undoubtedly be Oud. Oud originates from the wood of the Agar (Aquilaria) tree in Assam, India from where it spread to Southeast Asia and gained prominence in the Arab World. Oud (also known as Agarwood) is a fragrance that results from the Aquilaria tree getting infected with mould.

Oud has been prominent for time-old purposes that go beyond being a simple aromatic oil in Asia and Middle East. Muslims from all over the world use Oud, following their Sun’nah, “Treat with Indian Oud, for it has healing for seven diseases” - Bukhari Shareef. Buddhist monks believed oud helps to do away with ignorance whereas Tibetan monks believed that it calms the mind and soul. In Egypt, it was traditionally used by the Pharaohs for mummifying. Today, the ethereal and complex fragrance is used to scent mosques, homes and clothes in the Middle East. A slightly superstitious use would be it is believed to have the power to ward off the evil eye and attract lovers. Oud (in Arabic ‘oudh’) is also highly valued by perfumers for its sweet, woody, aromatic and complex scent. It is used in forms of oud oil (dehn ai oud) or resin (oud mubakhar). High quality oud blends the scents of ambergris, sweet incense, tobacco and wood.

Aquilara trees are now an endangered species. Perfumes and fragrances are ubiquitous in the Middle East. Consumers in the region spend five times as much on perfume when compared to Europe. The fragrance market, currently valued at $4bn, is expected to grow at 15% per annum in the next four years. In the upscale perfume industry, oud is prolific. Local oud-dealers have dominated the market since the past few decades; however, international fragrance houses are starting to make their presence felt by introducing their own oud fragrances. Philippe Tarasoff, Regional Director of L’Oreal Middle East was one of the first to do so by launching the Armani Prive Royal Oud in 2008. This was followed by brands such as Christian Dior, Givenchy and Tom Ford – all of whom launched their versions of the woody scent. Also, Oud is a dominating scent in many international perfumes such as Oud Eau by Killian, Oud Intense by Comptoir Sud Pacifique and Midnight Oud Eau de Parfum by Juliette Has a Gun. You are what you eat: How to maintain health with diet

71 | Eveningz | Health & Beauty

Eating healthy isn’t as complicated as it used to be. Whether it’s losing weight or maintaining a healthy lifestyle, in our foodie city, they are both an uphill battle. Ajay D’Almeida and Mitun De Sarkar are bringing a special treat for those of us who want to maintain a healthy nutritionally balanced lifestyle. U’ve got meal is a door-to-door customized food service-encouraging you to adopt healthy eating habits. With a fabulous launch just couple of months back, the co-founders aim to increase health awareness in the local community. Signing up for this super nutritional venture, takes the stress out of cooking or choosing your meals. Daily, you receive five meals in a small blue bag hung on your front door. It is ready to eat, calorie counted and convenient. Complaining about no time, were you? We think not. According to Mitun De Sarkar, Sr. dietician and partner of U’ve got meal, “Starting a health food program that begins with professional guidance can provide a deeper insight into every individual’s requirements since each one’s body is unique and therefore has unique nutritional requirements.” U’ve got meal is currently offering a onetime launch offer for a five day weight-loss trial plan which begins at AED 599/-. Long term plans include a 20 day or 24 day plan which are available at AED 2349/and AED 2799/- respectively. This health conscious brand provides the option of advanced consultations at the dietician’s clinic at a cost of AED 250/- and is applicable for two visits when clients sign up for a plan. Mitun De Sarkar has a different take on Ramadan season, revealing her healthy secrets. She says one should follow a balanced and nutritious diet and shouldn’t attempt any fad diets, mono diets or any deprivation diets during Ramadan. It is best to eat a light iftar followed by a nutritious dinner and before going to bed have a light snack. Moreover, it is essential to have Soohur as it’s the most important meal of the day during Ramadan and it should not be skipped. This meal should be wholesome as it prepares our body for fasting. Keeping our sugar levels stable, delaying hunger pangs and keeps lethargy and lack of concentration to minimum.

Iftar 3 dates and water 1 bowl of mixed vegetable soup/ a bowlful of fruit salad with high water content like melons, papaya, and berries 2 ryvita crackers or 2 slices of whole meal toast

9.00 pm Dinner A bowl of fresh salad with 1 tsp. of extra virgin olive oil or flaxseed oil or walnut oil 1 cup of brown rice or 2 slices whole meal bread or 1 cup whole wheat pasta or 1 cup Quinoa or 2 small bran rotis or pita breads 1 piece of fish or chicken or lamb or a bowl of chickpeas or lentils or beans or tofu or cottage cheese 1 cup of cooked colorful vegetables

Snack (optional if sleeping late) 1 cup yogurt with berries and almonds

Since the fasting hours are going to be longer this Ramadan, chances of getting dehydrated are very high and it can cause more health problems than food itself. So, you must drink at least the usual 8 to 10 glasses of water. Also drink plenty of soups, eat fruits with high water content & reduce consumption of tea & coffee as caffeine can be dehydrating. Generally during Ramadan, people tend to suffer from acidity due to long hours of fasting and eating greasy and spicy foods. In such cases it’s advisable to drink chilled milk or a probiotic laban to ease the discomfort. I would believe that’s the only reason why dairy could be increased in the diet during the holy month of Ramadan. Here is a sample diet plan for our readers from Mitun.

Sample Diet 4.00 am Soohur 1 whole meal Pita bread 1 whole egg omelet with mushrooms, bell peppers and onions with 1 tsp. of extra virgin olive oil 1 cup yogurt 1 fruit Plenty of water

OR Oats porridge with 1 tbsp of chopped pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and walnuts cooked in 1 cup of low fat milk 1 Fruit or a 4 dates or apricots or prunes Plenty of water

Use Common Sense

Drink Water

Don’t attack the fried foods and carbs. If you can’t help it, then at least limit your intake to one small sized portion of your fried or carb-loaded favorite.

Fizzy drinks and juices are a major no-no. The sugar loads they pack are enough to make up for a buffet. Drinking water will help controlling your appetite, boost your metabolism and keep you hydrated.

Proteinize Meet protein, your new best friend this month. He will help you keep insulin spikes minimal, control your appetite, keep your calories low, maintain lean tissue, and help burn fat for fuel.

Opt For Greens It may sound boring and unfair, but if you’re serious about fitting into your size 4 jeans, we suggest you keep it green. Calories are low, fiber is high and hunger reduces. Oh, and NO cheating with calorific dressings!

Work the Date Fate Yes, of course you’re bound to indulge in a date, or two, or ten…if you want to gain weight that is. Dates spike blood sugar drastically; it’s essential that you limit your date intake to one or two tops, if you want to keep your body from storing unwanted fat.

Younger Skin in Hours Lancôme’s latest breakthrough: Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate

77 | Eveningz | Health & Beauty

The invisible PARAMETERS OF YOUTH It took 13 years, three billion dollars of investment and the participation of leading scientists and research centres all over the planet to achieve the first complete human genome sequencing in 2003. 10 years later, techniques have advanced so significantly that it is now possible to establish a genetic profile in just 24 hours. In cosmetics, too, research has progressed at lightning speed, with Lancôme at the cutting edge. Very early on, our scientists sensed the potential of two related disciplines – genomics, the study of the expression of genes, and proteomics, the study of proteins, the signature of gene expression – and joined forces with some of the most eminent researchers in the field. Their intuition and research work came to fruition in 2009 with the launch of Génifique, the first Youth Activating Concentrate inspired by advances in genomics and proteomics. The culmination of 10 years’ research, this iconic formula, proven effective on women of all skin types, represented nothing short of a beauty revolution – a breakthrough recognized by more than 130 prestigious international awards.

GÉNIFIQUE reinvents itself Lancôme goes one step further in activating the appearance of youth. The result of 14 years of cutting-edge research and groundbreaking discoveries, protected by nine patents, Advanced Génifique has scientifically proven its effectiveness in repairing and activating 10 visual and tactile signs that characterize youthful skin. For all skin types, Advanced Génifique – the first and essential step of every beauty routine – is the solution for women who want to look younger.

So advanced is this exceptional formula, it is patented until 2029. Each drop delivers almost 40% more active ingredients for exceptional results.

An advanced texture For Advanced Génifique, Lancôme’s formulation experts rose to a new challenge by creating an unparalleled texture. Fresh and more enveloping than ever, it is instantly absorbed to create an unbelievably replumping and protective cocooning sensation. On the surface, its only trace is a soft-as-silk finish and an almost indescribable yet clearly perceptible impression of fullness, firmness and bounce – the unmistakeable sensation of youthful skin.

An advanced design While the iconic “little black bottle” remains unchanged, with its mysterious gradation offering a glimpse of the precious Youth Activating formula inside, its silver metal cap is now graced with the emblematic Lancôme rose. But you must examine the dropper to see the most significant change. The result of 15 months of design and as many of technical development, the Advanced Génifique selfloading dropper is inspired by automatic droppers used in research laboratories to precisely deliver the perfect dose. With one twist, it takes up just the right amount of product for optimal application. Morning and night, this essential step in every woman’s skincare ritual could not be simpler.

ADVANCED GÉNIFIQUE at the heart of LANCÔME skincare Advanced Génifique is the very first step of every Lancôme skincare routine, no matter what the primary skin concern. Apply Advanced Génifique morning and night before a targeted correcting care or specialist cream.

The right hairstyle for your face shape

83 | Eveningz | Health & Beauty

Find a haircut that flatters your visage!

Y

our hair is the frame of your face. A haircut is a secret weapon that can completely transform your look from drab to fab. However, not all haircuts flatter everyone. Finding the perfect haircut begins with determining what your face shape is followed by finding the style that balances the shape in the best manner. The basic rule of finding a haircut that flatters you is to highlight your great features and downplay your not –so-great features.

Round faces Round faces are circular in shape and are widest at the cheekbones. The length and width of round faces are almost equal. Drew Barrymore, Emma Stone and Cameron Diaz are celebrities who have round faces. The key with this face shape is to distort the illusion of roundness. Asymmetrical hairstyles such as long side swept bangs or a deep side part work best for a round face as they provide much needed structure. Having chin length, curly hair is a big no for round faces as it accentuates the roundness even more.

Square faces A square face shape is characterized by a prominent, angular jawline and a strong and broad forehead. Demi Moore, Keira Knightly and Sandra Bullock are celebrities with square shape faces. The key to flatter square shape faces is to downplay the angular jaw. Shoulder length feathery layers work well to offset a strong chin. You can also work with texture – curls soften the angularity of a square face. A square face shaped person should avoid blunt cuts that accentuate the jawline.

Oval faces Oval faces are widest at the cheekbones and one and a half times long as they are wide. Rihanna, Jessica Alba, Julia Roberts and Beyonce Knowles are celebrities who have oval faces. People with oval shaped faces are lucky because almost every hairstyle looks good on them! For oval shaped faces – the key is to work on highlighting their best facial features/concealing their less desirable features. For example concealing a big forehead with blunt bangs.

Oblong faces Oblong faces are characterized by length – they are much longer than they are wide. Teri Hatcher, Ashely Greene and Hilary Swank. The key for oblong faces is to downplay the long length of the faces and bring the focus to the cheeks. Blunt bangs work beautifully for oblong faces (one of the few face shapes that can pull off this risqué hairstyle!). Yet another style that works for oblong faces is hair cut in layers that hit the cheekbones. Oblong face shaped people should avoid hairstyles that add height to the crown as this will make their faces appear even longer.

Heart-shaped faces Heart shaped faces are characterized by a broad forehead that tapers towards a thin, narrow chin. Reese Witherspoon, Katie Holmes and Jennifer Aniston are celebrities with heart shaped faces. A long bob that’s all one length helps to soften the strong narrow chin. Blunt bangs with hair that isn’t layered is a style to avoid for heart shaped faces.

Embellishing Henna

By: Sidra Surmed

Pyramid to Igloo, Henna is your delicate stroke to celebrate Eid by waving your henna daubed hands.

85 | Eveningz | Health & Beauty

Henna (Mehndi): the art of painting the body in baroque designs. It is a stunning and enigmatic art form that has been used for decades to heal, adorn and – to bless. It is a mixture of eucalyptus oil, lemon juice and black tea. The paste is applied to the skin in different and beautiful ornate designs. When removed, it surely leaves a beauty mark that lasts 1 to 3 weeks.

Who, why, when? Who was the first woman to use henna as a beautifying agent? Do you know why henna was marked as hallowed vehicle of revolution and good fortune? When did it all start? So many questions. To absorb all the essence of mystifying henna W’s, let’s plunge back into time. Long, long ago – back to the era when animal blood was used as an inflamed lipstick and Cleopatra’s signature eye makeup was the usage of coal. It was an eon of extreme temperatures. It was a time when beauty evolved from the testimony of pyramids. The spell was – believe it or not – henna, the nail enamel. The shrouds of mummified bodies have been found stained with orange due to the henna dye. Wicked, isn’t it? Due to the cooling properties of the henna plant, it has also been used as medication.

Then followed by Mughals, Henna was used by them in the 12th century. During that tenure, mehndi was used by the wealthy and royals. Professionals intricately made the designs and to this day, henna tattooing has been practiced in the Middle East. This embellishing agent isn’t only used for the beauty it paints, but because it’s also believed to bring joy and good fortune. It has become the signature tradition for Asian celebrations, i.e. in weddings and Eid. Asian brides wear henna patterned in mystifying designs and engrave their husbands name on their palms. As of today, it is widely recognized as a wonderful dye for skin to achieve a stunning tattoo. It has become a stylish way for Middle Eastern women to decorate their hands and feet with different styles. The lacy, dense floral arrays, line patterns and teardrops are some of the most used designs. It takes about an hour to create a striking tattoo. Henna color is not limited, as the vintage style of henna making has adopted new modern techniques. Today, you find it in several colors and the best part is, the paste is poured into a cone that looks similar to the icing pipe for a cake, which brings neatness to the finish.

Iftar Etiquette

By: Varsha Phulwani

Keep yourself polite with these etiquette rules for an Iftar

103 | Eveningz | Art & Culture

I

f your Muslim colleagues invite you to an Iftar, do accept the invitation! Attending an Iftar is an excellent way to learn about the rituals of breaking the fast during the holy month of Ramadan. And if not knowing what to do during an Iftar is holding you back, then don’t worry for we bring you the etiquette you must follow: 1. Dress appropriately: Even though an Iftar is a social gathering, it is also a religious rite of Ramadan. Dress modestly and stay away from tight/revealing outfits. 2. Learn a few phrases: Wishing your host ‘Ramadan Kareem’ when you arrive and ‘Shukran’ (thank you) will make your guest appreciate your effort. 3. Arrive early: Your host has gone without food and water all day. It would be extremely disrespectful to make him/her wait till you show up. Therefore it is advisable to arrive 10-15 minutes before the call to prayer at sunset. 4. Bring a gift: Iftar is a dinner in which the value of sharing is inherent. Taking dates or desserts (preferably homemade) to your host’s house is considered good etiquette. 5. Break your fast WITH your hosts: An Iftar can begin in many ways. Some families break their fast with a glass of water while others with dates and a glass of milk. It is considered respectful to begin eating together and at the same time. Observe the people surrounding you and follow suit. 6. Be respectful of prayers: After breaking the fast, your host may go to pray and then return to complete the meal. Try to wait respectfully and do not eat while they pray. 7. Do not waste food: One aspect of Ramadan is to understand and experience how the less fortunate lead their lives. Therefore, wasting food is a big no-no. Only take on your plate as much as you can finish. 8. Know your cue to leave: An Iftar usually ends with dessert and a cup of tea or coffee. Following this, it is usually time to thank your hosts and leave.

This month’s exhibits The big picture uncovers a greater picture of arts

By: Salma Mehjabeen

in the emirates.

105 | Eveningz | Art & Culture

“At the end of your brush is the tip of your soul.”-Andrew Hamilton A life without art is not worth living. There has never been a society that overlooked art as a tangible or intangible expression of its culture. The UAE is no exception. It may be fascinating to many UAE based artists – as it is for me – to see how the nation has slowly but steadily promoted art and encouraged artists. Living in a community that appreciates talent surely springs hope to many underrepresented artits; they can now reach out and express feelings, ideas, concepts and ideologies without any commercial barrier. The Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre (DUCTAC) is the first modern, non-profit, crosscommunity creative centre in the Gulf. It is a revolutionary step in the art world, bestowing artistic attributes to the country. From hosting populous art shows to a range of creative workshops for all age groups, DUCTAC also gives artists the chance to build a name of their own. The Big Picture (an Art Exhibition held in DUCTAC), was hosted by Gallery of light. Stealing the public’s attention on the weekend of 6 - 8 June, it was an independent art exhibition organized and funded by participating artists. Featuring twenty-two Dubai-based talents who’ve been influenced by cosmopolitan societies, Abdul Mahmoud, Nashwa Zakaria and Manisha Andrade were some of few artists featured. Legions of artistic creations graced the montage. From paintings, photography, and sculptures to digital, audio and performing arts. The concept was inspired by fast-paced and busy societies. Fussing about tiny problems, the demanding details of our everyday routines, and negligence of where we’re all going as a collective society. The concept and the exhibition proclaimed the willingness of the artists in Dubai to create an impact and used art as a tool to give artists a voice to prompt change. The Big Picture focused on smaller details. Removing obstacles such as a location to display art pieces, as well as removing hindrances like profit-based art in a power-driven market. Their messages were the heart. Not limiting the artist with commercial factors and allowing them to concentrate on art for art’s sake.

“We live in a vast world; let us look at art from outer space, let us look at the big picture, no matter how big it gets, or small it might need to be” said Ram Nath, the co-organizer and curator of The Big Picture.

Christie’s– The UAE’s most prominent luxury auction house

107 | Eveningz | Art & Culture

T

hough UAE’s luxury auction scene may still be considered in its infancy by many, prominence of luxury auction houses like Christie’s is contributing to the growth of the UAE’s art auction industry. Christie’s is known for its biannual week long auctions of Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish Art. Hala Khaya, the regional art specialist and head of sales at Christie’s Middle East, along with her team, spend months gathering the best of regional art and beyond. For instance Parviz Tanavoli, who holds the record for drawing the highest price for a work of art at auction in Dubai and a world auction record for any Middle Eastern artist (The Wall [Oh Persepolis] sold for $2.8 million in 2008), auctioned The Poet and the Key at the auction. Christie’s are the leading art auctioneers in the Middle East and the leading art business in the world. As the first international auction house to have a permanent presence in the region, as well as the first to hold auctions, they provided the first international platform for artists of the region. Christie’s has sold just under $200 million of art, watches and jewellery in the Middle East since the first international art auction in the region took place in 2006, and has seen buyers from as many as 30 different countries participating in the sales. These figures confirm that there continues to be a fast-growing appetite and appreciation for art in the Middle East and they are proud to play an important part in promoting and celebrating art events in the region and in leading the international development of the vibrant Middle Eastern art market. In addition to the regular auctions, Christie’s is keen to encourage and support educational opportunities and holds exhibitions, educational seminars and charity auctions throughout the region. In April 2005, Christie’s opened an office in Dubai and became the first international auction house to have a permanent base in the Middle East. Christie’s first auction in the region took place in May 2006 and offered international modern and contemporary art from the Arab World, as well as from Iran, India, Pakistan and the West. The sale took place in a packed saleroom and was a huge success realizing US$8.5 million, and announcing the arrival of a new and vibrant sales center for the international art market. This and subsequent sales have established the foundation of a prosperous and sustainable art market in the region.

In 2007, Christie’s introduced spring and autumn sales offering Jewels and Watches alongside the art auctions. In 2008, Christie’s held an exhibition of leading international sale highlights and loans from private collectors at the Emirates Palace Hotel, Abu Dhabi. More recently Christie’s has introduced special sections for Turkish and Saudi Arabian contemporary art. In October 2010 Christie’s hosted a public art exhibition Doha: The Arab Capital of Culture 2010, the initiative undertaken by the Arab League and Unesco to promote and celebrate Arab culture in the region. In November 2010, Opening the Doors: Collecting Middle Eastern Art, an exhibition of works secured by Christie’s and organized by Abu Dhabi Art 2010 was held at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. This exhibition of ninety museum quality works dating from the 1920’s to 2010, was the first of its kind to bring together masterpieces from among the finest private collections in the Middle East. In April 2010 Christie’s was entrusted with selling 25 works from the Dr. Mohammed Said Farsi collection. This was followed in October with Part II of the collection which was also 100% sold. Totalling $15.4 million, the Farsi collection is now the highest selling private collection offered at auction in the Middle East. Today more than 30 countries are participating in Christie’s Dubai sales, demonstrating the international interest in Modern and Contemporary Middle Eastern Art. Christie’s, the world’s leading art business had global auction and private sales in 2010 that totaled £3.3 billion/$5.0 billion. Founded in 1766 by James Christie, Christie’s conducted the greatest auctions of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and today remains a popular showcase for the unique and the beautiful. Christie’s has 53 offices in 32 countries and 10 salerooms around the world including in London, New York, Paris, Geneva, Milan, Amsterdam, Dubai and Hong Kong.

Ramadan Glossary

By: Varsha Phulwani

Your guide to all things Ramadan!

109 | Eveningz | Art & Culture

The holy month of Ramadan is upon us! During this month, you may hear your Muslim friends and colleagues use a few words you are clueless about. Read on to find out what words commonly used during Ramadan mean…

Ramadan: originates from the Arabic word for ‘heat’ as the very first Ramadan was observed during the summer. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar year and during this holy month Muslims worldwide fast from sunrise to sunset and immerse themselves in complete devotion to the prophet Mohammed. Fasting is not just a way of showing devotion, but is an excellent way to detoxify the body. Hilal: In the Islamic calendar, each new month begins with the sighting of the new moon or crescent. SWEET JEWELS OF THE DESERT Dates: delicacies of rich significance and taste.

T

raditionally known as fruits of paradise, dates are a sweet staple food consumed both dry and fresh throughout Arab countries. Originating in the lands surrounding the Persian Gulf. These petite delights grow on palm trees and reach staggering heights of up to 82 feet. Many different types of the sweet delicacies grace the gourmet world, but Ajwa, Medjool and Bateel have taken the date world to new quality heights. Even the Arab world’s hospitality is famed – to some degree – thanks to the cute complimentary Arabic Coffee cups served with fresh dates. These eastern treasures are not only a source of indulgence but hold great significance in Islamic culture. During this special Ramadan period, Muslims renounce from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset in a process of internal and external purification. In the Sunnah, their fast is broken with dates. Why? These

babies are small but powerful with an excellent source of fiber, sugar, magnesium, potassium, carbohydrates and other minerals. These nutritional values are included in almost everything: dips, salads, cakes, and smoothies. Dates are not particular to Ramadan only. We treat ourselves to these sweeties year round; after all, we are lucky enough to reside in the home of the yearly Emirates International Date Palm Festival. Attracting more than 20,000 visitors, buyers and worldwide distributors, this weeklong festival is celebrating the culture, tradition and heritage of the date fruits. Were you looking to join? This 2013 it will be hosted in November. With its 40 different date types, the UAE is becoming one of the fastest growing palm-date producing countries in the world. Lucky us.

Ramadan 101 Being a non-Muslim expatriate living in the UAE without any knowledge of Ramadan or Islamic customs can be quite daunting. Eveningz brings you a guide of Ramadan dos and don’ts.

119 | Eveningz | Connoisseurs

90% of the UAE’s population is made up of expatriates. As Muslims around the world embark upon the holy month of Ramadan, expatriates residing in Islamic countries need to respect Islamic customs and do not provoke local authorities.

Iftar (the time at which the fast is broken) happens after sundown, which means the roads are filled with drivers who haven’t eaten or drank anything for almost twelve hours. If you can leave before sundown or wait until after Iftar, then do!

Violating the Islamic customs of Ramadan is not only disrespectful, but also punishable by law. Even in Dubai, one of the most westernized Islamic cities, the behavior of non-Muslims is expected to be in compliance with Islamic customs. Failing to comply leads to a warning followed by an arrest and fine of up to US$550 for subsequent infractions. Dubai’s chief of police, Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, told Arabian Business, an online business journal, “We train our officers how to deal with different nationalities and to respect non-Muslims who may inadvertently offend Muslims during Ramadan by eating, drinking or smoking in public places during the day…. They are to deal with it in a courteous way so that [non-Muslims] would refrain from doing it again.”

4. DO Show courtesy It is considered customary to use “Ramadan Kareem” as a greeting during Ramadan, and “Eid Mubarak” during Eid celebrations.

Being a non-Muslim expatriate living in the UAE without any knowledge of Ramadan or Islamic customs can be quite daunting. Here’s a list of Ramadan dos and don’ts:

Dos: 1. DO Respect those who are fasting Not eating all day can have a negative effect on the temperament of some people. Think about how you feel when you skip one meal alone. Therefore, it is important to be considerate and patient towards those who are fasting.

Don’ts: 1. DON’T Eat/Drink/Smoke in public places Eating/Drinking/Smoking in public is prohibited by law from sunrise to sunset every day during the holy month of Ramadan. NonMuslims are not expected to fast; however, if you they want to eat/drink/smoke they can do so in private places. 2. DON’T Swear/Shout in public The holy month of Ramadan is a time to control emotions and practice patience. Therefore, yelling/screaming/swearing/shouting in public is considered extremely disrespectful. 3. DON’T Play loud music Ramadan is a time of prayer and spiritual reflection for Muslims. Blaring music whether at home or in your car intervenes with their time of spiritual reflection and must be avoided. 4. DON’T Engage in public displays of affection Public displays of affection are against the law in UAE and are considered even more offensive during Ramadan.

2. DO Dress appropriately Men and women, both, should wear clothes that cover their knees. Women should make it a point to cover their necklines and arms. 3. DO Drive home before sundown

Fragranting Harmony

Paris Gallery, the leading luxury retailer in the region, announced the launch of the BYREDO INFLORESCENCE parfum. To celebrate the beginning of spring, nature’s perennial and powerful rebirth, Ben Gorham (Founder and Creative Director of BYREDO) envisaged a wild garden and a floral scent that would capture the strength and beauty of its blossoms, just as they reach their dramatic peak. The result, the wonderfully entitled ‘INFLORESCENCE’, is an Arcadian stroll through untamed bowers of full-blown, rambling roses, interspersed by the intoxicating, honeyed notes of pink freesias in their prime. Two of Spring’s very first flowers lie at the heart; the creamy-soft allure of the Magnolia blossom, its petals fully open about to drop onto beds of quivering Lily of the Valley or ‘May Bells’ – in the language of flowers, symbolic of a ‘return to happiness’ and the joy associated with the onset of spring. Finally, and most unusually, Ben has used Jasmine at the base, again luxuriant and overgrown, a veritable riot of fresh sweetness that supports the structure and furnishes a heady close.
