YOU’RE HAVING A LAUGH
Lawrence Laidlow On His Leap Of Faith
If anyone had told me I’d EVER be involved in stand up comedy – I’d have laughed at them(see what I did there?) All my life I have enjoyed live comedy, YouTube acts and TV performers, especially Billy Connelly.I was always amazed at how they could control a room and get everyone belly aching from their opening sentences. I remember saying to my Mrs, ‘I’d love to do that.’ I just didn’t know how. It was reading the Lee Mack autobiography where I found out exactly ‘how’ to do it. He writes, ‘Just get up and have a go. Go to an open mic night and challenge yourself’. That was it, I knew what I had to do. My first performance was a very impromptu set at an open mic night in Kettering. I only went along to see if other comedians were performing and how the format went. There wasn’t. So the organiser said, ‘Well, you’re here, wanna have a go?’ I jumped right in and did a ten minute set completely unscripted. Everyone laughed at everything I said, my accent(I’m a Geordie) helped enormously I’m sure. But after that I was hooked. Sadly I didn’t do much more than five minute sets at open mic nights in local pubs. However, everyone in a pub just wants to drink, tell their own stories and don’t really listen to the comics. I have found there needs to be a clear understanding, that the audience are coming to listen to a comic. So I stopped doing open mic nights and simply wrote lots more material. I’m not a Joke teller, I don’t have the memory to remember lots and lots of jokes. What I do is more observational and life experience stories. A lot like Billy and Lee. When you see me on stage most of the stuff I talk about has actually happened to me, or my friends.
Lawrence Laidlow February this year saw me do a twenty five minute set as part of the Leicester Comedy Festival. I never believed I had so much material people would actually want to hear. I received a massive applause and words of support from the crowd. Afterwards I was asked if I’d like to join a group of other comedians in Leicester, with the sole purpose of developing as a comic and performing. I jumped at the chance. Since February I have done many comedy nights and refined my material through peer practice sessions and live gigs. I have all the material I need to put on shows next year at the Leicester Comedy Festival and I will be doing a week long show at the Edinburgh Fringe. There is no better feeling than making a room full of strangers laugh. So from watching and wishing I could have a go at comedy, I now run my own comedy nights for clubs, groups, events and I even do corporate events. BORN TO COME BACK

The Sound Of Springsteen
We found ourselves with an unexpected night off and having seen a post on Facebook about The Sound Of Springsteen on Facebook we decided to take a trip over to The Cresset Theatre in Peterborough to take in this new tribute show. The show reel that accompanied the Facebook post was very impressive. I was initially surprised that I managed to find a parking space as having been to see another show at this theatre when we had to park a 5 minute walk away and only arriving 10 minutes before curtain up I thought we might actually miss the start of the show. Unfortunately the reason for this was the show wasn’t that well attended with probably only around 150 attendees. We took our seats and the band took to the stage to a Boss voice over. Having been fortunate to see Springsteen a number of times over the last 35 years I knew I might be a little critical but to be honest the 8 piece band perfectly captured the sound as per their show title. Most of the songs you would expect were there and one or two that surprised me like the solo tracks Philadelphia and Human Touch. The only surprise omission for me was No Surrender which is particular live favourite of mine. This was only the bands 18th gig since they formed but you would never have known that as they were very tight. The only real criticism I have is they didn’t segue songs which is what you expect of a Bruce concert, there was a little narration about each song and band members introduced individually in between songs.
The opportunity to get the audience to join in on Badlands and Waiting On A Sunny Day were missed as they stuck to the album versions of the song rather than the live versions that give the punters a chance to join in. They knocked Born To Run, Jungleland and Born In The USA out of the park. Although all of the line up were very accomplished musicians a special mention must go to 22 year old drummer Mikey Ciancio. Having only joined the band 2 weeks before this tour he was absolutely spot on with Max Weinbergs fills and held it together on what was a rigorous 2 hours, though Weinberg has done 6 hours with Bruce more than once so I’m sure Mikey will be happy to stick to this set length! I would hope that having captured the sound they next work on the energy and structure of a genuine Boss gig, a tall order I know but one that will catapult them to bigger audiences over the next few years. The Sound Of Springsteen are technically the best Springsteen tribute I have ever seen or heard and I will go and see them again and hope they have grabbed the opportunity to get as close to a Bruce show as possible. The rest of the line up for Sound Of Springsteen is Sam Confrey lead vocals/guitars/ harmonicas, Jerry Stevenson backing vocals/guitars, Richard J. Turner Finch backing vocals/bass, Stuart Walker backing vocals/keyboards, Mark Porch backing vocals/guitar, Glen Johnson backing vocals/ sax/keys/guitar, Phillipa Cookman backing vocals/ guitar backing vocals/guitar.
