ridedwin underscores bike as part of good life

t

he late edwin gardner viewed the bicycle not as a way to exercise or compete, but rather as a vehicle for enjoying life. gardner’s communityminded vision will be celebrated and emphasized saturday, the second anniversary of his death caused by injuries suffered after being struck by a car while riding his bike, with the third annual ridedwin in downtown charleston. The bike ride event will start at 9 a.m. saturday at cannon park at calhoun street and rutledge avenue and is an easy, casual, fun ride of about 3 miles to The Battery and back. light breakfast goodies, including fresh fruit from whole foods Market, and coffee will be provided. families are encouraged to attend. organizer peter wilborn also encourages people to dress in light, casual clothes, not lycra or spandex. “challenge yourself to ride a bicycle without dressing up,” said wilborn, underscoring the theme of ridedwin as using the bike as a mode of transportation and for fun. gardner’s widow, whitney powers, said that the past two events, attended by hundreds of people despite stifling heat, have been emotional for her and expects saturday will be, too, but that the event helps carry on gardner’s commitment to civic life. “it (the ride) is such a positive reinforcement of what was meaningful to edwin and us — enjoying the city from a bicycle,” powers said. “it’s about freedom. it’s a way to slow down and take in the experience of the city,” she said. “(riding a bike) is not about exercise, or anything else exclusively, but about everything.” despite the fact that

gardner and others have died or been severely injured by getting hit on local roadways, powers thinks the event furthers the idea that biking is safe and enjoyable, but that there is more work to be done to make it more so in the lowcountry. she pointed to the need to follow-through on the bike and pedestrian lane on the bridge between west ashley and charleston, two communities in dire, long-overdue need of having a nonmotorized, safe connection. The vision is not just urban, either. file photographs by david Quick/staff powers sees opportunities Cyclists participating in the 2011 RIDEdwin pass by the scene of the 2010 accident on Montagu Street near Lockfor summerville to add a wood Drive where community leader and avid cyclist Edwin Gardner was killed in an accident. bike and pedestrian link to the soon-to-be annexed colonial dorchester state park, and a path is being added along s.c. highway 61. “wouldn’t it be nice to be able to bike to the spoleto finale one day instead of getting stuck in traffic,” she asked.

his past winter, the tides folly Beach hotel and Blu restaurant and Bar closed for an intensive deep cleaning, painting and refreshing of the rooms and common spaces. There is a new “blue” at Blu, and it is the color of calm, cool and connected. enter the spacious foyer and the walls are washed in colorful led lighting that is repeated tableside with your light-show lantern. a natural sculpture of driftwood anchors the guest services area and a small reef tank filled with anemones, coral and other sea beauties sets the stage for the calming influences of the dining room now known as Blu. Kudos to the interior designers who let the oceanfront setting command center stage and arranged the tables so everyone has a view. The color palette of sand, azure, turquoise and white calms and restores. The gauze-like fabric panels that once sheltered the banquettes are now tied back. This look clarifies the sight lines to the sandy beach and welcoming waves, making it a premier setting on folly Beach. an aquamarine wall of water ripples at the bar, where tear-shaped lights appear suspended in space. Be sure to notice the staircase, the ceiling treatment and the lighting. Blu marries coastal chic with the relaxed vibe of flip-flops and Marysia fashions. The deck offers a casual bar, a rail for those who can’t get enough of the view and attractive conversation pits featuring adirondackstyle chairs, wicker furnishing and outdoor seating for dinner. blitzen trapper

it’s true that pop culture progresses in more of an oval shape than a straight line, always revisiting its past and borrowing the best parts before moving forward. it’s a safe bet to follow the openings your idols and influences have created, but it’s also perhaps the best way to reach new places: take the roads already paved. portland-based folk/rock band Blitzen trapper certainly chose that logic when it formed around a decade ago. is the music anything new? no doubt that it’s not. But when it comes to bands that revisit the past, it all comes down to the question of how much they learned, and Blitzen trapper studied well. The band proves to have been a pupil of icons Bob dylan and The eagles, and more recent influences such as uncle tupelo and wilco. The quintet uses all the right practices for penning songs that are simple and real. The group signed with the legendary sub pop records in 2007, making it instantly noteworthy to critics. rolling stone in particular has adored the band ever since its 2008 sub pop debut, “furr.” The band’s latest album, “american goldwing,” was released last year.

The band released its u.K. debut, “The city That sleeps,” in 2008 and quickly began drawing comparisons to other bands with entrancing, enveloping rock styles, such as coldplay, Keane and snow patrol. The band worked on building a following in their native land before releasing the u.s. version of the album in 2010. since then, a silent film has become somewhat of a band of road warriors, having performed nearly yearround throughout the states, the u.K. and beyond. the fixx

Beautiful Friction/Kirtland

B+

anyone remember The fixx? chances are that if you’re over 40 and i mention songs such as “saved By zero” or “one Thing leads to another,” you’ll likely have a nice little ’80s flashback. led by singer cy curnin, The fixx racked up quite a few radio hits in the ’80s and saw their videos in heavy rotation on MtV back when that channel actually used to do what its name implied. while most bands from the ’80s have either disappeared or broken up only to reunite for the inevitable reunion tours, The fixx has remained active all these years. while the band’s heyday was definitely

during the popularity of its 1983 release “reach the Beach,” the band has released eight more studio albums since then, including the new release, “Beautiful friction.” while The fixx always got lumped in with all of the other new wave British acts of the ’80s, in truth the band had its own special sound, and while that sound has evolved over the past three decades, one can still hear signs of the old fixx on the new cd. curnin has a voice that sounds like a cross between david Bowie and Bono, and he shows that it is still in fine form on songs

such as “anyone else,” “follow That cab” and the title track. The music definitely has a retro feel to it, but at the same time it doesn’t sound as if the band is desperately trying to recapture the sound of its glory days. while not quite packing the same punch as “reach the Beach,” this new album is nonetheless surprisingly good, especially coming from a band many thought no longer existed.

of raspy, smokey goodness, James definitely fleshes out the majority of the songs on “Blood red Blues,” all of which she either wrote or co-wrote. James sounds a lot like Janis Joplin on tracks such as “let’s all get loose” and “Thick like Blood,” but is also able to switch up and exhibit a smoother vocal style on songs such as “feel My love come down.” Backed by guitarists rocky athas and rob “slideboy” andres, bassist dan Mohler, keyboardist susan Julian and drummer chris

leighton, James does a great job delivering the goods here. There are a couple of tracks, most notably the mediocre “wounds,” that don’t quite hit the mark. But overall this is a solid album by a singer who definitely knows what it means to sing the blues.

and over the years, he’s kept my respect by refusing to be pigeonholed as simply a jam-band musician. he’s collaborated with artists outside his genre and even recorded a surprisingly good children’s album a few years back. on “pick,” williams continues to buck trends, teaming with bluegrass stars The travelin’ Mccourys. The music in “pick” is freewheeling and fun. The leadoff track, “something else,” has a contemporary sound similar to that of popular newgrass outfit punch Brothers. other tunes, such as “american car” and “The graveyard shift,” sound more like

traditional bluegrass. two of the album’s best moments come with covers of My Morning Jacket’s “i’m amazed” and Jesse J’s “price tag,” both of which translate beautifully to bluegrass. for bluegrass purists and jam fans alike, “pick” is a great collection of songs by a group of musicians that sound like they had a blast recording it.

not just anyone can sing the blues. while just about any musical style requires its vocalist to convey a certain amount of emotion, the blues really requires the singer to sell it. one doesn’t simply sing the blues, but instead gets emotionally involved with the material. if the strength of the material on singersongwriter cee cee James’ latest cd, “Blood red Blues,” is any indication, she seems to understand that principle. with a voice that has just the right amount

i went to see Keller williams at the Music farm about a decade ago. i’ll admit i had no idea who he was going in, and that actually may have made his solo performance all the better. standing alone on a stage full of instruments, williams began playing a guitar, then used a loop pedal to set up a melody. he moved to the bass, then drums, and so forth, until he sounded like he was being backed by a full band. it was pretty amazing, and showed why williams remains a huge draw on the jam band circuit. i became a fan of williams that night,

Batman should never ice skate.” local musician george fetner, age 26, recalls dressing up as Batman ‘every day’ as a child, complete with mask and six-pack breastplate. “it’s who i was,” he said, laughing. “in fact, i went home recently and found a journal of pictures i drew in kindergarten. dark in nature. Both the intense action and the mature script contribute to the excitement among comic and movie fans of all ages for this week’s release. hot on the heels of the “The avengers” and June’s box-office busting “The amazing spiderMan,” 2012 is poised to be the summer of the comic action hero at movie theaters around the world. “The dark Knight rises” may prove to be the biggest smash success yet.

Batman through time

first conceptualized in 1939 by artist Bob Kane, Batman emerged as an alternative to the pre-eminent comic book hero, superman. The alter-ego of millionaire (and later, billionaire) Bruce wayne, Batman developed his obsession with fighting crime after watching the brutal murder of his parents as a child. unlike other action stars, Batman possesses no super powers. There is no green Kryptonite to bring him down or radioactive spider that empowered him — Batman’s powers are derived from his own dedication, strength and an unlimited bankroll for tools from the Batmobile to “The Bat,” a flying car that’s debuted in the new film. in 1943, Batman first jumped from the pages of dc comic books to the silver screen with the blackand-white release of a 15-chapter serial film. in 1966, both a color television show and an accompanying full-length film were released starring adam west as Batman. This era of “holy pancakes Batman!” and exclamations of “pow!” and “Bam!” whenever the hero and sidekick robin landed a punch persevered for decades, until artist and writer frank Miller penned a comic series entitled “The dark Knight returns” in the mid-1980s, relaunching the character into the public eye as a brooding, complex man. ever since, the caped crusader has remained steadfastly in the public eye and in the imaginations of children, young and old. “i was always the biggest fan of the ‘The animated series’ in the 1990s for its balance of kids’ stories and adult themes,” said Mike campbell, owner of captain’s comics and toys on sam rittenberg Blvd. “The new movies do a really good job of making Batman dark and relatable without making it gross and horrible.” one major adaptation of the nolan films is a mingling of the

wholesome Batman era and the dark 1980s vibe. whereas early Batman comics had the hero using a gun to take down mobsters (and even tim Burton’s version had machine guns on the Batmobile), nolan’s hero is distinctly gun-averse. “Batman’s parents were killed by guns, so they’re a very negative image for him that’s jarring and shocking,” explained campbell, adding that the original robin was introduced in the comics by swinging into the scene on a rope with guns blaring, followed by a slap on the back by Batman and a “good job, old chum.” “The fact that today’s Batman

‘the dark knight rises’

batman trilogy ends in disappointment By christy leMire Associated Press

c

hristopher nolan concludes his Batman trilogy in typically spectacular, ambitious fashion with “The dark Knight rises,” but the feeling of frustration and disappointment is unshakable. Maybe that was inevitable. Maybe nothing could have met the expectations established by 2008’s “The dark Knight,” which revolutionized and set the standard for films based on comic books by being high-minded and crowd-pleasing. with christian Bale as his tortured superhero starting from 2005’s “Batman Begins,” nolan has explored the complicated and conflicting motivations of man as well as the possibility of greatness and redemption within society. here, as director and cowriter, he’s unrelenting in hammering home the dread, the sorrow, the sense of detachment and futility of a city on the brink of collapse with no savior in sight. gotham is under siege in ways that tonally and visually recall 9/11; what is obviously the island of Manhattan gets cut off from the outside world at one point. rather than seeming exploitative, it’s just one of many examples of the script from nolan and his usual collaborator, his brother, Jonathan, making the franchise feel like a relevant reflection of our times. identity theft, economic collapse and an uprising of the disgruntled, disenfranchised have-nots against the smug, comfy haves also come into play. There’s so much going on here, though, with so many new characters who are all meant to function in significant ways that “The dark Knight rises” feels over-

Anne Hathaway stars as Selina Kyle. loaded, and sadly lacking the spark that gave 2008’s “The dark Knight” such vibrancy. The absence of heath ledger, who won a posthumous oscar for his portrayal of the anarchic and frightening Joker, is obvious here. in retrospect, it makes you realize how crucial ledger’s performance was in making that Batman movie fly. By comparison, “The dark Knight rises” is plot-heavy, obsessed with process, laden with expository dialogue and flashbacks that bog down the momentum and — dare i say it? — just boring at times. yes, the Batman world through nolan’s eyes is supposed to be moody and introspective; you’ve got to admire the fact that he is willing to challenge us this way when summer blockbusters so often feel flashy and hollow. “The dark Knight rises” does feature the kind of impeccable production values we’ve come to expect from nolan’s films; many members of his core team are back, including cinematographer wally pfister, editor lee smith, and production designers nathan crowley and Kevin Kavanaugh. “The dark Knight rises” feels weighty and substantive and, thankfully, isn’t in 3-d, but it takes on an even grittier look than its predecessors as gotham city

But nolan’s approach is so coldly cerebral that it’s a detriment to the film’s emotional core. it’s all doom and gloom and no heart. There is no reason to care about these characters. it’s been four years since “The dark Knight” came out, but eight years have passed in terms of story. Bale’s Bruce wayne suffers in self-imposed exile, sulking about wayne Manor, mourning the loss of his darling rachel and carrying the burden of blame for the death of district attorney harvey dent. he’s left as a man without a purpose. They never call her catwoman by name, and she’s never as campy as Michelle pfeiffer and halle Berry, but she’s always fun to watch.

The other woman in Bruce’s life is woefully underdeveloped, which is a real problem because she plays a key role in the film’s climactic revelations. Marion cotillard co-stars as Miranda tate, a wealthy philanthropist who hopes to work with wayne enterprises on developing clean, sustainable energy. The romance that develops between her and Bruce is utterly unbelievable. Joseph gordon-levitt adds a youthful presence as John Blake, an up-and-coming member of the police force who inspires Bruce to revisit his own childhood as an orphan. unfortunately, there’s not much to his character. Then there’s Bane, a muscular mass of pure evil who orchestrates an elaborate takeover of gotham city. The role is a waste of what tom hardy can do; his character is so one-dimensional and poorly defined, he’s never so much a fearsome figure as a large and hulking one. it

doesn’t help matters that it’s often difficult to make out what he’s saying beneath the muzzle that covers his nose and mouth. hardy can be sexy and charismatic but also dangerous and unpredictable. none of that is on display here. he’s all brute force. But he is the instigator of the film’s dazzling opening sequence, worthy of the best of James Bond: a daring aerial maneuver in which Bane kidnaps a scientist by hijacking his plane from the skies above. That’s probably the most effective of the many set pieces nolan stages here, although the collapse of heinz field during a packed football game also has an urgent, visceral quality. This is the problem when you’re an exceptional, visionary filmmaker. when you give people something extraordinary, they expect it every time. anything short of that feels like a letdown.

nolan-free ‘Justice league’ raises questions for dc films

By Ben fritz Los Angeles Times

w

arner Bros. will need a new hero to invigorate its dc comics brand on the big screen, now that director christopher nolan’s successful Batman trilogy is coming to an end with friday’s “The dark Knight rises.” home to such superheroes as superman, Batman and wonder woman, dc has struggled to find the same success on the big screen as its walt disney co.-owned rival Marvel entertainment. nolan’s Batman movies have been the studio’s only hits of the past decade, surrounded by modest flops such as 2006’s “superman returns” and 2009’s “watchmen” and such major money-losers as 2010’s “Jonah hex” and last year’s “green lantern.” as a result, top warner executives had hoped that nolan, who is producing next summer’s superman reboot, “Man of steel,” would agree to serve the same role on the studio’s “Justice league.” “it was a conversation we had,” warner Bros. film group president Jeff robinov said. however, nolan has declined the studio’s overtures, the filmmaker confirmed last weekend in interviews promoting the release of his final Batman installment.

The news probably comes as a disappointment to the thousands of people in san diego last week for comiccon international, the annual gathering of genre entertainment aficionados. fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a next dc movie since “Man of steel” was announced in 2010. like all hollywood studios, warner craves new film franchises, which tend to perform best overseas, generate sequels and drive sales of dVds, toys and other ancillary products.

‘hysteria’

rom-com leaves viewers wanting more

By Michael phillips Chicago Tribune

h

owever it’s handled, the story of the invention of the electric vibrator would benefit from better treatment than “hysteria,” a film left wanting for a tone and a surer sense of the times. The stylistically uncertain romantic comedy stars Maggie gyllenhaal as the late 19th-century social reformer daughter of london’s (fictional) dr. dalrymple, played by Jonathan pryce. The doctor’s successful treatment of society ladies diagnosed, willy-nilly and with cluelessness, with various forms of hysteria has led to a thriving practice. dalrymple has enough business, in fact, to hire an assistant, a character inspired by the historical record: dr. Mortimer granville (hugh dancy). true to his times, granville, like dalrymple, considers the treatment to be a purely clinical exercise. Meanwhile, granville plans

movie review  (out of five stars) director: tanya wexler cast: maggie gyllenhaal, hugh dancy, Jonathan pryce rated: r for sexual content running time: 1 hour, 35 minutes what did you think: find this review at charlestonscene. com and offer your opinion. to marry dalrymple’s other daughter (felicity Jones), a more classically Victorian model than her “Major Barbara”-style sister. as “hysteria” nudges dancy’s and gyllenhaal’s characters together, by way of periodic spats and verbal sparring matches, the screenplay imagines how, precisely, granville’s gadget freak pal (played, with extreme broadness, by rupert everett) inspired granville in his “eureka!” flash: the

creation of the electric device. The director of “hysteria,” tanya wexler, has some fun with all this, though sensibly she has no interest in burlesquing the subject. The picture’s heart belongs to gyllenhaal’s ultra-modern feminist: the enlightened antidote to all the simpy, repressed attitudes swirling around her good works and itchy exasperation. photographs by sony pictures classics and that’s a considerable Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy star in “Hysteria.” part of the problem. This key character doesn’t seem like a woman ahead of her own corseted time; rather, especially as gyllenhaal delivers her, charlotte is like a time-traveler from a century ahead. you don’t believe in her in the context of the film’s setting. also, the movie lacks wit. and the heartbreaking postscript? playwright sarah ruhl just wrote a wonderful theatrical exploration of Dancy (left) a similar subject (“in the and Rupert next room”), and now that Everett star in one won’t get the screen ad“Hysteria.” aptation it deserves.

ace’s on bridge

By BOBBY WOLFF

Beforewelookatthecontractof six hearts, a word on the auction. If you play two-over-one gameforcing (meaning that a two-level response in an uncontested auction sets up a sequence that cannotdiebelowgame),thenNorth’s jump to three hearts shows good trump support and slam interest. South has minimum trump support but excellent side-suit controls. When he shows his spade and diamond cards, North takes control and uses Blackwood to bid six hearts. When the spade jack is led, South should see at once that he has no losers in the side suits and should therefore focus his attention on holding his trump losers to one. The natural thing to do is to win the spade lead in hand and

play a heart to dummy’s queen. If it loses, South will regain the lead and then play the heart ace — ready to finesse against East if he turns up with four trumps, and losing only to a singleton king with East. What if the trump finesse holds? It would be easy (but fatal today) to cash the heart ace next.Instead, declarermustmake the somewhat unnatural move of coming back to hand with a club to lead the heart nine. If West follows with a small trump, declarer must duck in dummy. This will sometimes lose a trick unnecessarily if East has the 10, but giving up on an overtrick to secure the slam is a price worth paying. © United Feature syndicate

he year 2012 has many people reflecting on the 150th anniversary of the civil war, but another armed conflict also has its anniversary this year — the war of 1812. sometimes referred to as the “second war of independence,” this fight against the Brits officially started on June 18, 1812, and lasted for several years. not much is devoted to the war of 1812 in school, so this week’s trivia might be a little challenging. we have nikki drake as our current champion going up against rob Brunson, an amateur fisherman. questions 1. who was the u.s. president during the war of 1812? 2. what type of “gangs” recruited u.s. sailors by force into the british navy, which would become one of the reasons congress declared war? 3. originally called “defense of fort henry,” this poem-turned-song is now known as ...? 4. who was the leader of the shawnee and a large tribal confederacy that allied with the british against the united states during the war of 1812? 5. what nickname did the uss constitution receive after a naval battle with the hms guerriere? 6. name one iconic building that was burned to the ground as a result of the battle of bladensburg. 7. what future president of the u.s. was a major general during the war of 1812? 8. what treaty signaled the end of the war between the u.s. and britain? 9. on Jan. 8, 1815, (ironically, after the treaty had been signed), the final conflict of the war took place just outside of what american city? 10. who else were the british at war with in 1812?

file/bill haber/ap

Some of the oldest examples of lines of fortification of the War of 1812, such as one at Fort Pike at The Rigolets, La., are crumbling and washing away. But then again, I guess it’s not surprising since the war marks its 200th anniversary this year.

nikki’s answers 1. monroe 2. union Jack. named for the flag. 3. is it “the star-spangled banner”? 4. geronimo 5. old ironsides 6. i remember the white house had been burned at some point. 7. Jackson 8. (laughing) i really don’t know. this is a lot harder than last week’s. 9. baltimore? 10. france, i think.

conclusion head2head was impressed with the number of correct answers in this week’s trivia, having wrongly assumed both contestants might struggle with the subject matter. despite the valiant efforts, there is only one head2head trivia champ, and this week it’s rob who emerges victorious. see you next week.

rob’s answers 1. James madison 2. they were “press gangs.” 3. francis scott key’s “starspangled banner.” 4. you got me. 5. old ironsides 6. it was the burning of washington, d.c. so the white house and the u.s. capitol building. 7. andrew Jackson 8. not 100 percent sure, but it might’ve been the treaty of paris. 9. new orleans 10. well, it was during the napoleonic wars, where england was fighting to contain napoleon from taking over the world.

correct answers 1. James madison 2. “press gangs” 3. “the star-spangled banner” 4. tecumseh 5. old ironsides

6. white house, u.s. capitol 7. andrew Jackson 8. treaty of ghent 9. new orleans 10. france, napoleon

ear aBBy: what do you think about a grandmother getting into a Jacuzzi with her 6-yearold granddaughter? This has caused a big rift in our family. at a large recent family gathering, my daughter couldn’t accommodate all of us sleeping at her home, so some of us rented rooms at a nearby motel. My son-in-law’s parents took my granddaughter “charise” to their room to spend the night. The bathroom had a Jacuzzi tub in it, and grandma and charise bathed in it together. when they told my daughter about it the next day, she became upset because she thought it was inappropriate for an adult to be in the tub with her young daughter. My daughter’s mother-inlaw said she was not ashamed of her body and she refused to apologize to my daughter for what happened. My sonin-law has sided with his mother. what do you think? — shocKed in cincinnati DEAR SHOCKED: I fail to see what the uproar was about, since the grandmother and grandchild are the same sex and we all come with the same standard equipment. It’s not worth causing a rift in the family, so tell your daughter to cool down and stop making waves. dear aBBy: i have a problem with my husband, “howard.” i moved two hours away from my family, left my job and sold my house and car to be married to him. now i feel trapped. we have been married three years. it wasn’t like this in the beginning. i’m a housewife who takes care of his mother who lives with us (another story). i can’t go anywhere. i’m at home all day, every day, except when his mother needs to go to the doctor. he refuses to get another car because he’s “afraid” i’m going to meet someone else if i go out. i’m at my wits’ end. howard doesn’t like my

dear abby friends — the three that i do have. he has taken church away from me because he believes a husband and wife should go to church together, and he doesn’t; therefore, neither should i. he’s verbally abusive and manipulative. i feel i can’t do anything right, and he proclaims to be a perfectionist. everything revolves around him and his likes, needs and wants. This is a second marriage for both of us. he admits that he’s insecure. i love him, but i can’t take this anymore. i want to leave, but i don’t know how or where to begin. if i were to go home, i’d have nothing, no home, no car, no job or money. we have no children together. what is your advice? — trapped in the southwest DEAR TRAPPED: By now you must realize there is no way to assuage your husband’s insecurity and need to control. No wonder this is his second marriage. I’m betting it won’t be his last, either. Look at it this way: He has a housekeeper, a built-in caregiver for his mother and someone whose every move he can control. There are worse things than going home, starting from scratch and rebuilding your life. The first that comes to mind is continuing to live in a marriage like this one. So pick up the phone and ask your family to come and get you. And if you are afraid that he could become violent, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline. The toll-free number is 800799-7233. They will help you formulate an escape plan. write dear abby at www. dearabby.com.
