showing folly some love

a

fter a rough-andtumble time for folly Beach, life seems to be settling down on “The edge of america” as midsummer yields to late summer. on Saturday, folly will be getting some love in the form of two events: hands across the Sand at noon and an afternoon beach cleanup and celebration sponsored by the Surfrider foundation and, ironically, Barefoot wine (the alcohol ban remains in place).

Hands Across the Sand

folly Beach is one of two locations along the South carolina coast to host this event that will take place in 29 states at noon in respective time zones Saturday. participants will join hands for 15 minutes, forming lines in the sand, to demonstrate their love of the coast and the need to protect it. The event supports clean energy and is against offshore drilling. The event at folly will kick off at 11:20 a.m. in front of the tides hotel (near the pier) with comments from folly Beach Mayor tim goodwin and hamilton davis of the coastal conservation League. chris carnevale of the Southern alliance for clean energy said he hopes all locals “who love the beach, the marsh, the seafood and everything else that prompts us to call the Lowcountry home to come out ... to demonstrate that they don’t want these things jeopardized by a risky industry.” “The intrinsic risk of offshore drilling has been shown time and again, the most poignant example being the 2010 gulf oil disaster. The spill debilitated the gulf coast tourism and fishing industries and exposed tens of thousands of cleanup workers to toxic substances that have been linked to serious illness,” carnevale said. “The toxic chemicals of the spill penetrated throughout the marine food chain, from

‘wimpy kid’ acts better on screen By John horn Los Angeles Times

c

ompared with the traditional protagonists of summer movies, greg heffley really doesn’t measure up. he’s a skinny little thing, is no pillar of rectitude and doesn’t have much in the way of friends. But to countless young boys, greg feels like a real superhero, even as he’s becoming better behaved on screen than he is in print. opening friday, “diary of a wimpy kid: dog days” is the third entry in what has been a small but modestly successful series. adapted from Jeff kinney’s wildly popular illustrated books, the films chronicle the everyday struggles of middle school student greg. an admitted underachiever, he’d rather play video games than pretty much anything else, greg is frequently in trouble with his parents and classmates yet rarely takes much blame. The books and the movies alike throw more than a few scraps toward parents; there’s an ongoing joke, for instance, about the lameness of a “family circus” knockoff comic that only people of a certain age would get. and for this installment, the “wimpy kid,” with a budget of about $22 million, will take on those big summer heroes rather than opening in March, where the first two releases in 2010 and 2011 grossed a combined $116.7 million domestically. while the pg-rated, liveaction films make a number of narrative leaps from kinney’s six novels (the 41-yearold writer also wrote two “wimpy kid” companion books), which have sold a combined 75 million copies in 35 languages, they retain the author’s celebration of greg’s defiant if not occasionally unruly deeds. Like a modern-day dennis the Menace, he’s no paragon of preadolescence, but his

new ‘total recall’ won’t make you forget original By roger Moore MCT

movie review

he almost nonstop chase of the new “total recall” isn’t enough, by itself, to make one forget the earlier take on this philip k. dick story back in the last century. and for all the effects, the action and the showcase performance provided for his wife, kate Beckinsale, “underworld” Spandex salesman Len wiseman never lets us forget that he’s no paul verhoeven, who directed the original film. verhoeven (“Basic instinct”) brought a demented, visceral and sexual energy to a high-minded sci-fi “B” movie saddled with the teutonic bore, arnie Schwarzenegger, as his star. his notentirely forgettable “recall” is remembered for images, jokes and jolts in between the effects. wiseman doesn’t have verhoeven’s (limited) inventiveness, his kinky and wicked wit. But he does have Beckinsale, whose years of vampire pictures have taught her how to lean into the camera, how to keep her mop of hair

 (out of five stars) director: len wiseman cast: colin Farrell, Kate beckinsale, Jessica biel rated: pg-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, some sexual content, brief nudity and language running time: 1 hour, 58 minutes what did you think?: Find this review at charlestonscene.com and offer your opinion.

sony pictures

Colin Farrell in “Total Recall.” tossed over one scowling eye, just the right level of sneer to slip into her openmouthed hypersexual pout. here, she’s the villain, the adoring wife doug Quaid (colin farrell) thinks he’s been waking up to these past seven years. and she’s terrific. we’re 100 years in the future. Memories can be invented, introduced, changed, bought and sold. “we can remember it for you wholesale” was the title

of the story this is based on. and the folks at rekall are all about tinkering with your memory, your reality. “tell us your fantasy, we’ll give you the memory,” a rekall guru (John cho) purrs. “what is life but our brain’s perception of it?” exactly. it’s a measure of this movie’s mediocrity that the many credited screenwriters and the director cannot make more of that possibility. we never are made to doubt doug’s reality, any

more than he does. “if i’m not me, then who the hell am i?” doug has been waking up with Lori (Beckinsale), but dreaming of Melina (Jessica Biel). and it turns out, those dreams are his real past, an agent mixed up with a rebellion, a sexy rebel agent (Biel) working for the rebel leader (Bill nighy) or perhaps for the fearless leader, played by with generic villainy by Bryan cranston of tv’s “Breaking Bad.”

humanity has barely survived a chemical world war and we’re living in two enclaves: euromerica and new Shanghai. and we’re living in layers, stacked up from the surface, where futuristic Mini coopers and fiats remain, to way up in the sky, where futuristic hover-cars and rotor-less helicopters roam. and keeping the peace: “Synthetic federal police,” who take their fashion cues from the armored Storm troopers of “Star wars.”

in this future, cell phones are implanted in your hand (neat), paper money still exists (check out the face on the bills), guns still use bullets and darned if those bullets still don’t miss when the hero and his rediscovered heroine are dodging them. not a lot of room for acting in between the sprints. it’s a “Blade runner” world of dark and rain, a “fifth element” future of stacked up “levels” of humanity and traffic. no doubt about it, there’s a lot to take in, visually, during the endless chase that runs doug through skylights, awnings, crowded streets, subway cars and this vast shuttle that shoots people through the center of the earth from Britain to australia. So, kudos where they’re due: to production designer patrick tatopolous. But it adds nothing to this “recall,” which is not quite totally different from the last “recall” — yes, a threebreasted woman shows up, no, we don’t travel to Mars — to note that the last “recall” wasn’t all that. This one isn’t either.

‘total recall’ remake: no replacing arnold schwarzenegger By rafer guzMan Newsday

whose credits on top-notch tv junk food like “The Six Million dollar Man” surely espite the presence of helped him craft arnold hot stars like colin classics like “The running farrell, kate BeckinMan” and “commando.” sale and Jessica Biel, “total all you need is a youngrecall” isn’t a sure bet at the ish new star with a personal box office when it hits thetrainer, right? aters friday. wrong. it’s part of a genre that The past several arnold hasn’t done well lately: the redo’s have been re-don’ts. arnold Schwarzenegger we can start with 2009’s remake. “terminator Salvation,” on paper, reworking an in which christian Bale arnold movie probably and Sam worthington sounds easy. his old blockcompeted to see who could busters had in-your-face show less emotion; both were concepts — a robot from outdone by a robot wearing the future! — and durable arnold’s digitally re-created scripts from pulpmasters face. such as oliver Stone, who co- in “predators” (2010), arwrote “conan the Barbarnold was replaced by adrien ian,” and Steven e. de Souza, Brody, who appeared to

weigh less than his machine gun. Last year’s remake of “conan,” despite hawaiian hunk Jason Momoa in the starring role, flopped with just $21 million in ticket sales. hmmm, what’s the missing ingredient in these movies? arnold Schwarzenegger! There’s no replacing that inverted-pyramid torso, the silent-era facial expressions and the semi-unintelligible accent. These days, he’s settled into the comfortable role of the cigar-smoking, philandering politician, but during the 1980s and ’90s he was an action star with extraordinary charisma. Somebody finally figured

that out! The upcoming action flick “The expendables 2” gives arnold a more active role than the original: The trailer shows him tearing the door off a Smart car. arnold himself is set to star in a sequel to his 1988 hit comedy “twins” with danny devito. eddie Murphy may play their brother; the working title is “triplets.” and last year, the governator revealed that he was considering revisiting 15 of his old movies (wonder if “twins”/“triplets” was one of them?). That may or may not be good news. are we talking about another “true Lies” or another “kindergarten cop”? Arnorld Schwarzenegger

tabbuli a restaurant in search of identity

abbuli, also known as tabbuli grill, is a property of the charleston hospitality group. owned by Sam Mustafa, this Mediterranean-inspired restaurant joins toast!, Market Street Saloon (downtown and north charleston), eli’s table and whisk as the latest entry into chg’s portfolio of growth in the food and beverage industry during the past 10 years. tabbuli is a restaurant in search of an identity. it is in the tight space that was once your place, then Quick Bites and finally high tide cafe. at the foot of Market Street, it is a natural funnel for the foot traffic of tourists and the surge of cruise ship passengers. it has wisely expanded outside into a protected bar area and attractive stone patio complete with telescoping fountains, palm trees, umbrellas and potted plants. it has launched a successful white haute nights program, complete with specialty cocktails, a smallplates menu, contemporary fashion designers and progressive stylists to rock the night away with glam. on those nights, tabbuli transforms the patio with gauzy curtains, enhanced seating, geometric floral displays, bands of white lights and a brave attempt to foray into fashion club land. no Skinny girl cocktails were spotted on the menu, and there does not appear to be a requirement to book “bottle service,” so mark your calendars for aug. 24 when white haute nights will reappear with cocktails, fashion and fun on the Market Street runway. tabbuli serves the same menu at lunch and dinner. it is driven by the Mediterranean taste memories of Mustafa, as interpreted by chef Scot vosburgh, whose training and early culinary experiences followed an

lindsey buckingham fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter finds happiness later in life with solo career By Stratton Lawrence Special to The Post and Courier

F

or a man who has lived his life in the public eye, mixing work with pleasure, Lindsey Buckingham seems to have found the balance between music, love and family he’s been in search of for decades. raised in california’s Bay area on a steady diet of folk music, Buckingham began recording with then-girlfriend Stevie nicks in 1972, calling themselves Buckingham nicks. a self-taught guitar player who never uses a pick, Buckingham’s style soon caught the ear of drummer Mick fleetwood, whose fledgling blues band fleetwood Mac was in search of new energy. fleetwood invited Buckingham to join him and existing members John and christine Mcvie (bass and keyboard, respectively), an invitation the guitarist accepted with the caveat that nicks would have a place, as well. The new quintet, which included the two couples plus fleetwood, quickly recorded its self-titled debut; previous iterations of the group had already released nine albums since 1968, enjoying moderate success in the u.k. and in the united States. please see bucKingHam, page e15

bucKingHam, from e14 it was the next effort, however, that elevated fleetwood Mac to greatness.

Relationship ‘rumours’

“rumours,” released in 1977, became one of the best-selling albums of all time on the strength of the single “go your own way,” a song by Buckingham. The record also turned the group into tabloid fodder, as the Mcvies, Buckingham and nicks, and Mick fleetwood underwent separations during the recording process. The group soldiered on, following up “rumours” with another Buckinghamled effort in 1979, “tusk.” and somewhere amid the nonstop touring, fleetwood and nicks allegedly became lovers, adding to the drama and intrigue among fans. By the early ’80s, Buckingham and nicks both began to pursue solo careers, reuniting long enough to record 1982’s “Mirage” and 1987’s “tango in the night,” before Buckingham called it quits to focus on his own recordings full-time. in 1997, Buckingham made amends with his bandmates, rejoining them for an extensive tour dubbed “The dance.” fleetwood Mac recorded a final album together in 2003, “Say you will,” followed by intermittent touring until 2009. nicks has since hinted that the band may reunite in 2013, but for now, she and Buckingham seem content to play the role of solo artists.

Flying solo

These days, in Buckingham’s case, he truly is all alone on stage. for his current tour, which arrives Saturday in north charleston, Buckingham will perform with no accompaniment, putting his intricate finger-style playing and emotional singing and vocalizations on full display. for solo versions of songs like fleetwood Mac’s “Big Love,” Buckingham relies on his wide singing range, even falling into chanting, guttural expressions that build the song to its dramatic climax. without any formal

training, his trademark finger-style arpeggios flutter between rock, classical and folk, earning Buckingham the final spot on rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest guitarists. in interviews throughout his career, Buckingham has repeatedly explained his interest in performing as a solo act, despite the obvious monetary rewards of staying with fleetwood Mac. “it isn’t necessarily for the commerce, it’s for the growth,” he said on MSnBc’s “Morning Joe” program in September. “you cut off a certain number of people (playing by yourself), and that’s the trade-off.” Buckingham says that “tusk” is his favorite fleetwood Mac album because it undermined the brand the group created with “rumours,” even though that decision cost them the extra money they might have made from pursuing another hit like “don’t Stop” and “go your own way.” “as i’ve grown as an artist, i’ve gotten more and more in touch with my center, and that center is voice and guitar,” Buckingham writes on his personal website. “over time, it has become increasingly vital to express more with less; that is my touchstone now, and the embodiment of that philosophy is largely represented in the new show. i’ve been thinking of doing this kind of tour for a while, and am quite excited to be doing something new, something outside my comfort zone.”

Finding happiness

after his public breakup with nicks, followed by a seven-year relationship with model carol ann harris, Buckingham has now been married to wife kristen Messner for 12 years. They have three children, ranging in age from 8 to 14. he’s open about the role of newfound stability and balance helping him to discover true happiness later in life, far away from the dramatic and constant turns within fleetwood Mac. “The only way i’ve been able to keep my sanity is to pull back when i feel

like its time to pull back,” Buckingham told pBS talkshow host charlie rose last year. “without that time to regenerate my batteries, taking myself off the treadmill that was the mega-selling machine, that wouldn’t have happened. it’s very easy to confuse fame and success. i think of success as something that you have to keep cultivating as you would a garden, and keep thinking of it in the long term.” Buckingham’s first solo album, 1981’s “Law and order,” sparked an independent career that found its biggest success with the songs “holiday road” and “dancing across the uSa,” recorded for 1983’s “national Lampoon’s vacation” soundtrack. his most recent release, 2011’s “Seeds we Sow,” is his sixth as a solo artist. “There tends to be kind of a sense of ‘where are things going in this crazy world?’ ”

Buckingham said of the album’s lyrical content. “Then it’ll turn around and say, ‘well, wait a minute. it all starts with me.’ where are things going in my own crazy life, you know?” Songs such as the title track and “in our own time” deal with the struggle of “keeping in a groove with your personal life,” while “Stars are crazy” examines the pain of lost opportunity in the past and present. “if you’ve been hurt, if you’ve been betrayed, what’s important is that you just let things go,” Buckingham said. for a man who has experienced the extreme highs of gratification in his creative pursuits and the lows of losing love in the public eye, Buckingham, at age 62, appears to be heeding his own advice and confidently stepping back into the spotlight on his own.

missy higgins

The ‘Ol Razzle Dazzle/Vagrant

A-

australian singer-songwriter Missy higgins is one of those artists who can seemingly pluck a pop hook out of thin air and then forge a song around it with just as little effort. previous albums such as “The Sound of white” and “on a clear night” have made higgins a star in her native country and has led to a smaller following here in the united States. on a side note: Local musician and producer Jay clifford co-wrote a song on “The Sound of white.”

while traveling in 2010 with the Lilith fair tour, higgins met fellow aussie artist Butterfly Boucher and eventually traveled to nashville, tenn., so that Boucher could produce higgins’ latest effort, “The ol’ razzle dazzle.” recorded after a lengthy break from writing and recording, higgins definitely sounds refreshed on the new album. her lovely singing voice, which is reminiscent of regina Spektor, is as strong as ever on the new release. Standout tracks include the jazzy “hello

hello,” the beautiful “all in My head” and the ultra-catchy “temporary Love,” which begs to be remixed into a dance track. it is obvious pretty early on that the break from making music only strengthened higgins’ artistic instincts. The music on “The ol’ razzle dazzle” shows an artist who is emerging and spreading her wings.

while she is primarily known as the lead singer for The Bangles, Susanna hoffs has kept busy musically even when not recording and touring with that classic ’80s band. She’s recorded a pair of albums of cover song duets with Matthew Sweet and has released a pair of solo albums, 1991’s “when you’re a Boy” and 1996’s “Susanna hoffs.” in addition, she was a member of the fictitious band Ming tea, which played between scenes in the “austin powers” films. neither of her solo albums really made anything resembling a splash in the music world, which was a shame, as they

were both decent, especially “when you’re a Boy.” never one to rest on her laurels, hoffs is back with yet another solo effort, “Someday,” which once again demonstrates hoffs’ talents as a songwriter and performer. “Someday” is a far more mature album than any of her earlier work. if you’re looking for this year’s “Manic Monday” or “walk Like an egyptian,” then you’ll likely be disappointed. if, on the other hand, you’re looking for well-crafted california folk pop with a heavy dose of the 1960s thrown in, then you’re going to love what’s on “Someday.”

chipper songs such as “november Sun” and “one day” are reminiscent of The Mamas & the papas or The Beach Boys (if they had a female vocalist), and there are lavish touches to the production, including strings and horns on several songs. hoffs’ distinctive voice punctuates each song, and many of the tunes have her favorite rickenbacker guitar jangling along happily. overall, “Someday” is the solo album that hopefully will cement hoffs’ status as a solo artist.

when members of several well-known musical acts join forces to record an album, the results can be hit or miss. Sometimes the result is magic, as was the case with The traveling wilburys and cream. other times, the ensuing music is all but unlistenable, much like the material on the albums by zwan and Bad english. hellyeah gathers members of pantera, Mudvayne, nothingface and damageplan. as if those acts weren’t hard enough rock for the average listener, it appears that hellyeah was born with a chip on its musical shoulder. as a result, the band

apparently feels the need to attempt to melt the faces of anyone daring enough to give the band a listen. i saw them play live at a concert thrown by 98 rock a couple of years ago, and these guys don’t hold back. Lead singer chad grey doesn’t sing his lyrics so much as he spews them at the listener. add the musicianship of drummer vinnie paul, guitarist tom Maxwell and bassist Bob zilla, and it’s easy to see why hellyeah lasted past its first album and is now releasing its third, “Band of Brothers.” on the new cd, there’s nothing much new under hellyeah’s sun, which is actu-

ally a good thing. Songs such a “war in Me,” “drink drank drunk” and “dig Myself a hole” probably give even someone who doesn’t listen to metal an idea of what lies in wait on the new album. Suffice it to say that if you liked hellyeah’s first two satisfying yet onedimensional releases, then “Band of Brothers” offers more of the same.

an ‘idol’ homecoming Local singer elise testone takes stage with american idol Live

ince it first started airing on american television in 2002, “american idol” has become one of the biggest reality shows on tv and has resonated with music fans across the country. The singing competition has helped elevate the images of the show’s judges, which have included paula abdul, randy Jackson, Simon cowell, Steven tyler and Jennifer Lopez. But mostly it’s about making stars out of the previously unknown, such as kelly clarkson, ruben Studdard and carrie underwood. one of the previously unknown, at least nationally, was local musician and singer elise testone, who had an outpouring of support around the Lowcountry as she competed on Season 12. and while she didn’t win

Life on the road

Erika Van Pelt every singer has an event that first sparks the desire to perform in front of an audience. for testone, her early interest in music came courtesy of a jukebox, or rather, a lot of jukeboxes. “My dad collected and fixed up old jukeboxes,” testone said in an interview with charleston Scene, “and he would play records over Skylar Laine and over again after fixing them. he’d blast them super loud, and i’d always remember hearing old Motown songs and Billy Joel and jazz. “he never bought just one. he’d buy eight and fix them up and then sell them really cheap, so that was his good deed.” testone, who played local please see idol, page e21

idol, from e20 spots such as fish, Juanita greenberg’s, The windjammer and poe’s tavern, is living the dream and in front of significantly larger audiences than before. “we played L.a. two nights ago, and that was sold out,” she said. “it’s been awesome.” testone went on to describe a typical day on tour: “we get there pretty early in the day, and we meet and greet fans outside, do press interviews with local stations, then more meet and greets, then we do the show, and when the show is over, we can go outside to meet people on our own if we want to, and i always do. There are always a bunch of people outside after the show, and we go and take pictures and sign autographs.” when asked if there was anything about touring with a huge production that she wasn’t expecting, testone replied, “i’m not totally shocked by anything, except maybe how good the food and the catering is. “i’ve been looking forward to the tour and riding on the bus, and it’s kind of what i thought it would be. i love the idea of being in a new place every day.” on tour with testone are the rest of the Season 12 top 10, including winner phillip philips, colton dixon, deandre Brackensick, erika van pelt, heejun han, hollie cavanagh, Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet and Skylar Laine. while they bonded on the show because they were all experiencing everything from

the same point of view, testone said the bond has grown as they’ve been on tour, which began July 6 in detroit. “i think we are closer now, obviously, because there’s less pressure,” she said, “but we always all viewed it the same way; that you were in competition with yourself, so every week we would help each other, and there would be more really criticizing ourselves because we could have done better.” while on the road, testone also revealed that she has been writing new music. “i actually wrote a song for Josh Ledet and i to sing as a duet, but i’ve also been writing stuff on my own. i’ve also been trying to work with the band, as well, while i have them around.”

Local support

while life on the road has brought about new experiences but few surprises for testone, she said the thing she’s noticed most about life after “american idol” is how people see her. “i feel like the same person, but people see me differently. it’s different now, because people treat me more like a ... celebrity,” she said. testone hesitates on that last word, almost as if she is a bit uncomfortable referring to herself as such. “i still feel the same though,” she continues, “but it’s different right now. i’m in this bubble on tour, and all i see are the people that are in the bubble with me. So in that regard things are different.” what won’t be different are testone’s lo-

cal fans and how they see her, because according to them, she was a star long before “american idol.” “it is so fun to watch elise perform to see the reactions of other people around you,” said holly harrison, who met her about four years ago when they became roommates and have since remained friends. “i loved going to see her play at local bars like Juanita greenberg’s, The windjammer or poe’s tavern, and people would just freak out when she started singing. i knew that she was destined for more that first time i saw her sing live.” harrison, who ran the “vote for elise testone on american idol” facebook fan page (facebook.com/voteforelise) during Season 12, predicts that her former roommate will go on to record music “that will change the industry.” But while harrison predicts fame and fortune for her friend, she also feels that testone falls into a different class of entertainer. “i think what sets her apart is she is not about the fame or money,” harrison said of testone. “She honestly, deep down wants to inspire people and for people just to simply enjoy music. “She could have gone on ‘idol’ or any similar reality show years ago, but it took her this long because she wanted to hone her craft, put in her time, do her ‘music homework’ so to speak. “i can see her winning grammys and making millions, but instead of buying a yacht, opening a center for young musicians.

She is that type of loving, giving person. i can’t wait for that day to come; she deserves every bit of success she is sure to receive,” harrison said. and harrison is likely not far off about testone eventually opening a center for young musicians, as the singer was a music teacher at Music unlimited in Mount pleasant prior to being whisked away to hollywood to compete on “american idol.” chris holly, co-owner of Music unlimited, is another local supporter and said he wasn’t surprised when she made it into the television competition, or that she went as far as she did. “we couldn’t be more proud of her,” holly said. “She’s like a little sister to us here at Music unlimited. She’s very driven, very talented. She’s definitely a five-star singer.” and the “five-star singer” will have fivestar support, as holly said that he along with a large group of instructors and students from Music unlimited will be attending Monday night’s show. “i’m not sure where we’ll be sitting,” he said, “but we’ll be yelling our heads off for elise.” and that will suit testone just fine as she had her own advice to hometown fans. “i want everyone to scream really loud at the show, and make sure they come outside afterward so i can say hi to them, and thank them so much for all of the love and support.” charleston scene editor allison nugent contributed to this report.

ace’s on bridge By BOBBY WOLFF

Andrew Robson, bridge correspondent for The London Times, owns a hugely successful bridge club. In today’s deal, Robson was West. Cover up the South and East hands and plan your defense against three notrump. You lead the spade three anddummy’sjackholdsthetrick. Declarer plays a low club to his queen and your king. What now? Suppose you play back a spade. Declarer wins and cashes his clubs, forcing you to pitch a diamond. He leads a diamond up, lettingyouwinyourkingandexit in spades. But declarer cashes the diamond queen and throws you in with a spade to give the lead back in hearts, letting him cash the diamond ace for his ninth trick. If you discarded a heart on

the club, declarer can play a heart instead. After taking two hearts and a spade, you will have to lead adiamond, andSouthisnotgoing to guess wrong. Robson found a more dynamic defense. When he was in with the club king, he switched to the diamond king. Declarer won and cashedhisblack-suitwinners,but Robson discarded a heart. He could now establish a diamond to go with two hearts and two black-suit tricks. Declarer missed a resource: He should have ducked the diamondking. He wins the diamond continuation, then cashes his diamond ace and his high clubs and spades before exiting with a spade, forcing West to give him a heart trick at the end.

brother avoids paternity test

50 years after death, monroe still an icon

d

By reBekah Bradford Special to The Post and Courier

s

unday marks the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death. and while she was an icon in life, her legacy has continued on in death in many forms, from andy warhol’s silkscreen painting to last year’s film release of “My week with Marilyn” and beyond. This week’s head2head trivia is about the original blond bombshell. two-time winner rob Brunson is trying for a third victory, and his opponent is terri webber, who works as a part-time bookkeeper.

File/matty zimmerman/ap

In this iconic 1954 photo, Marilyn Monroe poses over the updraft of a New York subway grating while in character for the filming of “The Seven Year Itch.”

Questions

1. what was her real name before becoming marilyn monroe? 2. name the 1950 film noir directed by John huston that featured monroe in a small but critically acclaimed role. 3. in the film “gentlemen prefer blondes,” what song does monroe sing in what is now considered an iconic performance? 4. what did monroe famously answer when asked what she wore to bed? 5. which famous baseball player was monroe’s second husband? 6. in 1953, monroe appeared on the cover of the first issue of this magazine. 7. directed by billy wilder, this movie starring monroe was named by the american Film institute as the greatest american comedy film of all time. 8. monroe standing over a subway grate with her skirt flying up is a scene from what movie? 9. monroe sang a sultry version of “happy birthday” to what u.s. president? 10. what was the last completed film by monroe that also starred clark gable?

rob’s answers

1. norma Jeane. if you need a last name, i think it was baker. 2. not sure i know this one. 3. i believe it’s “diamonds are a girl’s best Friend.” 4. yeah, i don’t know. maybe nothing. 5. that would be Joe dimaggio. 6. playboy 7. “some like it hot” 8. again, not sure what movie it is. 9. JFK 10. i think it was “misfits.”

terri’s answers

1. she was born norma Jeane something. 2. i know early on she was in “all about eve.” 3. “diamond’s are a girl’s best Friend” 4. the perfume chanel no. 5. 5. the one who played for the yankees. Joe dimaggio. 6. playboy magazine. 7. oh, this is a great movie. “some like it hot.” 8. “the seven year itch” 9. Kennedy 10. “misfits”

conclusion

correct answers

two-time head2head trivia champ rob couldn’t make it a three-peat against challenger terri, who easily became our newest contestant to claim the title. of course, it probably didn’t hurt that terri had recently read one of the many books published for the anniversary of monroe’s death. that’s what you call good timing.

1. norma Jeane mortenson 2. “the asphalt Jungle” 3. “diamonds are a girl’s best Friend” 4. “why, chanel no. 5, of course.”

5. Joe dimaggio 6. playboy 7. “some like it hot” 8. “the seven year itch” 9. John F. Kennedy 10. “the misfits”

The baby is about 2 months old, and my folks still don’t know they could be grandparents. My brother doesn’t want to tell them right now, and he doesn’t want a paternity test to see if the baby is his because he doesn’t want to face the reality that he really could be a father. abby, knowing that i could have a niece out there is killing me because there are so many children who harbor resentment toward their absentee fathers. i really want to do the right thing and get my parents involved, but if i do, i’ll lose my brother’s trust. if i don’t tell, i will have to live with the fact that i am abetting my brother being another stereotypical dead-beat dad. please help. — aunt in diSguiSe DEAR AUNT IN DISGUISE: How old is your brother? From your description, he is acting like a 14-year-old. Have another talk with him and tell him that because he is old enough to father a child, he’s also old enough to accept responsibility for his actions. The time is now to tell his parents everything and start supporting his child in every way he can. Of course, before making any announcements, he should be sure the baby is actually his. A paternity test will let him off the hook if he isn’t the father. So give him a deadline to have the test done, and if it shows he is the baby daddy, set another one for him to inform your parents or you will. nies it even though the items are in her home. My mother is much better off financially than i am and has no need to use my credit. i have spoken to the companies and had mixed results. Some have agreed to put the bill in her name, others refused. at this point, i don’t know what to do. any advice would be appreciated. — Joanna in BrookLyn, n.y. DEAR JOANNA: Your mother’s behavior is shameful. Talk to your credit-card companies and ask for new credit cards. If this is allowed to continue, your mother will destroy your credit. Tell her that you expect her to pay the charges she has incurred immediately, and you want proof of payment. Warn her that if it doesn’t happen, you will inform the fraud division of your local police and let them deal with her. Then follow through. dear aBBy: i’m 13 and have a problem. My friends are jealous of me. They say i’m spoiled rotten. i honestly don’t think i am that spoiled, and i love my friends dearly. i am bothered by their rude comments. how do i ask them to stop or should i just ignore it? — unSpoiLed in indiana DEAR UNSPOILED: The next time they say it, say: “It hurts my feelings when you say that. A spoiled person is someone who doesn’t appreciate what she has, and I appreciate everything I have. Especially friends like you.” write dear abby at www. dearabby.com or p.o. box 69440, los angeles, ca 90069.
