The third annual Go Red Heart 5K Run and Walk will be Saturday at Patriot’s Point in Mount Pleasant. Participants are asked to wear red and embrace the heart theme.
february is focused on the heart
f
ittingly, february is american heart month, when matters of the heart, both romantic and health, converge. and on the saturday before valentine’s day, the charleston area hosts an event that’s sure to make hearts race. The third annual go red heart run 5k is at 9 a.m. saturday at patriots point, starting and finishing near the charleston harbor resort and marina pavilion. Just like events held near st. patrick’s day, fourth of July and christmas, go red’s organizers urge people to wear red, heart-themed costumes or red dresses (including guys), the latter for the american heart association’s go red for women campaign. prizes will be given to the best red dressed. go red is organized by stephanie seay carter in honor of her mother, robin seay, who died of a heart attack at 47. carter holds the event to help make people more aware that heart disease and stroke are the no. 1 and no. 3 causes of death, respectively, among women in the united states.
also, in an effort to lure more serious runners to the charity event, go red is registered to be the u.s. track and field 5k championship race for south carolina. packet pickup and late registration is 5-8 p.m. friday and 7-8:15 a.m. saturday at lookout pavilion, 20 patriots point blvd. registration costs $35 online or $38 with a mail-in form. a pre-race dinner, including salad bar, grilled chicken, wild mushroom ravioli and more, will be held during registration friday. cost is $20. www.musc health.com/goredrun
11th save the light
meanwhile, another race on saturday morning celebrates one of the most
romantic landmarks in charleston: the morris island lighthouse. The 11th save the light half-marathon and 5k started in 2002 (but skipped 2007) as an effort by the save the light organization to raise awareness and funds to save the 136-year-old lighthouse, which was and is in danger because of erosion and years of neglect. This year’s event will begin at 8:30 a.m. saturday on folly beach, starting and ending near the edwin s. taylor fishing pier. to sign up for the race, go to The tides hotel, 1 center st., on folly from 4-7 p.m. friday or 7-8 a.m. saturday. late registration fees are $45 for the half-marathon and $30 for the 5k. www.action carolina.com/stl.html

‘side effects’ keeps you guessing by roger moore MCT
s
teven soderbergh, rightly considered one of hollywood’s smartest movie makers, is at his cleverest in “side effects,” a canny, cunning big-idea thriller in a minor key, an engrossing zeitgeist whodunit about wall street, big pharma, prescription drugs and the power we give psychiatry and psychologists. put simply, it’s about a death perhaps caused by an under-tested depression drug. channing tatum plays a wall street type just getting out of prison for securities fraud. rooney mara (of the hollywood adaptation of “The girl with the dragon tattoo”) is emily, his seemingly overwhelmed wife, a morose beauty burdened by the responsibilities she now carries (she’s the one working) and the memory of the life they lost. her attempted suicide-bycar puts her in the care of dr. Jonathan banks (Jude law), a seemingly sincere psychotherapist who must come up with a drug — on the fly — that keeps a distraught but apparently sane emily out of the hospital. we’ll do this and then that drug, he suggests. and if one or the other produces problems, we’ll prescribe something else to counter those. how about this new thing, the one she’s seen the ads for on tv: “ablixa”? “side effects” nicely describes the slow-moving “fog” of depression as waves of it overwhelm emily. and it plays like a case-study in her treatment by drugs — her downcast behavior replaced by other manifestations of “not quite right.” suddenly, she has energy and can function at work and in her marriage, where “new energy” translates to a vigorous sex life. but she’s up at all hours, sleepwalking. she can’t remember things.
Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones star in “Side Effects.”

Channing Tatum in “Side Effects.” Then a crime happens and we wonder if it was the drug, the doctor (legally paid by the pharmaceutical company to test the drug on patients), the patient’s predisposition (catherine Zeta-Jones plays her previous doctor) or something else that led to tragedy. it’s a film that sees quiet menace in the everyday. soderbergh elegantly suggests that if you’re suicidal, every trip down to the subway, every boat ride in the harbor, every moment behind the wheel or meal prepared with sharp knives has the threat of an impulsive, irreversible act. soderbergh, working from a scott Z. burns (“contagion”) screenplay, trans-
forms this tricky mystery into hints of something trickier — wall street machinations, the murky relationship between psychotherapists and the courts, between doctors and pharmaceutical companies. “you watch the commercials on tv,” one puzzled character complains. “people get better.” law uses his years of playing cads as useful baggage here, giving suspicious layers to this married, overextended workaholic. tatum is never more believable, no matter what the character, than when he’s in a soderbergh movie. he should single-handedly prevent soderbergh from going through with the director’s

urtons grill is an upscale, casual restaurant that is part of a chain of 10 properties. what distinguishes burtons from other chains is its commitment to the landscape of the local community. it was founded by three experienced restaurateurs, kevin harron, kevin rowell and pat gordon. for them it was sharing a vision: The restaurant had to meet their own desires and expectations. They wanted burtons to be a haven for active, discerning adults with sophisticated palates interested in high-quality food and wine. as president and cofounder, harron, 2007 massachusetts restaurant association’s man of the year, says, “our strategy is simple. we commit to serving only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients, to employ passionate, driven people and train them to deliver consistent, considerate service. we keep our prices affordable, our atmosphere comfortable, and we work diligently to make sure we’re upholding our values.” for their mount pleasant location, they have tapped into local farms: ambrose, boone hall, rosebank and Thackeray. it means local fish and meat when possible. an herb garden is right outside the restaurant. and although a corporate culinary director calls the shots for the enterprise, chef chase barton can tailor his menu to local tastes. barton is a culinary institute of america grad who comes to mount pleasant from burtons grill’s virginia beach location. with advance notice, he is more than happy to work with guests to create a tailored menu for their special occasions and events. for those who are glutenintolerant, burtons has designed a menu in partnership with the gluten-free restaurant awareness program and certified gluten

lisa loeb
No Fairy Tale/429 Records
A-
remember lisa loeb? if you’re under the age of 25 you probably don’t, but your mom or older sibling might. back in 1994, loeb had a huge radio hit with “stay (i missed you),” which first appeared on the soundtrack to the film “reality bites.” That tune went to no. 1 on the pop charts despite the fact that loeb had yet to be signed to a major label. That was quickly remedied.
skinny molly Haywire Riot/Ruf
B-
listening to “haywire riot,” the new album by southern rockers skinny molly, one could definitely understand that the band originally got together strictly for fun. There’s a laid back, detached feeling to the band’s music, but not so detached that it doesn’t have some kick. skinny molly started almost a decade ago when former lynyrd skynyrd member mike estes hooked up with several musicians and set off on what was sup-
stevie ray Vaughan and double trouble Texas Flood/Sony Legacy
A
The spark that lit the fuse that propelled stevie ray vaughan and double trouble to stardom came in 1982, when the band played the montreux Jazz festival. by the next year, vaughan had played guitar on david bowie’s comeback album, “let’s dance,” and he and his band had released their debut, “texas flood.” That album ended up winning a gram-
since then, loeb has been able to make a career as a musician but has never quite been able to re-create the sensation of that first single. for some artists, that might prove to be maddening, but one gets the impression that loeb has found peace with that, and concentrates instead on making music that satisfies her. loeb’s latest release, “no fairy tale,” is her first studio album in eight years, not counting the two children’s albums she’s released. while there is still no “stay (i missed you) part 2,” there is plenty to like on this
new collection of songs. loeb is a gifted songwriter, and whether she’s rocking out in grand fashion (“no fairy tale,” “The ’90s”) or being a bit more acoustically introspective (“weak day,” “ami, i’m sorry”), it’s clear that loeb’s songwriting well is far from dried up. if you’ve enjoyed loeb’s music over the years, or even if you have only ever just heard her big hit, this new album definitely warrants a listen.
posed to be a quick tour of europe. estes found that he enjoyed making music with the rest of skinny molly, and the band has been together in one form or another since. aside from estes, who sings and plays guitar, the lineup includes guitarist Jay Johnson, bassist luke bradshaw and drummer kurt pietro. if you’re expecting something of a radical departure from other southern rock acts such as skynyrd, then prepare to be disappointed. although skinny molly doesn’t outright copy any of the bands it is so obviously inspired by, there are hints
of molly hatchet, black oak arkansas and, yes, even estes’ former band. tracks such as “if you don’t care,” “too bad to be true” and “Judge parker” demonstrate the band’s sound perfectly: rock with a southern twang that sounds perfectly suited for some roadhouse on a lonely stretch of highway. while not every song on the album hits all the marks, the band makes up for it in enthusiasm. This is no-nonsense southern rock meant to be played loud.
my for best traditional blues recording and put the texas blues band on the national map. Just seven short years later, vaughan would be dead, the victim of a tragic helicopter crash, but thankfully his music lives on. now, legacy has seen fit to reissue that groundbreaking debut album, which features tracks such as “pride and Joy” and “mary had a little lamb.” The real reason to own this reissue, though, is the inclusion of a concert from the fall of 1983 in philadelphia. vaughan

Young punk days
soul asylum’s roller-coaster history began in the early 1980s in the minneapolis/st. paul area. The twin cities’ underground rock scene was the same fertile environment that spawned two similarly punk-inspired alt-rock bands, The replacements and husker du. pirner had moved from green bay, wis., to minneapolis when he was 17. he learned to play the drums with various garage bands, including loud fast rules, which included future soul asylum bandmates dan murphy on guitar and karl mueller on bass. in 1982, pirner switched to guitar and started writing his own lyrics and songs. soul asylum gradually took shape with drummer pat morley on board to keep time. in 1984, the minneapolis-based indie twin/ tone records signed the band and released the nine-song debut “say what you will.” soul asylum’s loud, angst-driven, guitar-based sound soon caught the ear of college radio. Through the ’80s, the band developed a loyal following around the country. critics praised pirner’s lyrics for their unsentimental tone, clever sarcasm and poignancy. “i learned that writing lyrics involved finding where you could fit in a breath, and finding words that sing as opposed to words that stumble,” pirner said. “it’s poetry to some people, and it’s crap to others. i’ve always looked up to bob dylan, leonard cohen and others who’ve had such a great grasp on the language. i don’t really know what i’m doing most of the time, but i hope that i’m getting better at it. There are certain times when i feel that i know what i’m doing, but usually it’s
eteran songwriter dave pirner is a rock ’n’ roll survivor. as the lead singer, rhythm guitarist and main songwriter of minnesota-born alternativerock band soul asylum, he’s endured the stress of harsh touring conditions, tumultuous lineup changes, disillusionment with the major label side of the rock industry, bouts of obscurity and the death of a bandmate. but pirner has bounced back from every challenge. “i’m tryin’ to come to terms with what it takes to keep yourself interested,” pirner said. “i think that’s when people give up. i want to be a working musician, and i want to play music. The people that i’m working with now are stone-cold serious about it. ... in most situations, it becomes an interest, then it becomes a passing fancy, and for the people who are left — the survivors — it really becomes a matter of life or death.” This month, pirner and a rejuvenated version of soul asylum — bassist winston roye, drummer michael bland and lead guitarist Justin sharbono — head through the southeast, including a stop this weekend at The pour house in charleston. The trip is part of a tour in support of a new studio album, “delayed reaction,” released on their own imprint, 429 records. “it’s really a productive group,” the frontman says of the band. “everybody wants to get out and play, and that’s exciting to me. going on the road can be a tolerance-tester, but it’s a real fresh-faced bunch as far as attitude goes. They’re genuinely into it, and that’s a good feeling for me.” please see asylum, page e21

asylum from page e20 like screwing in a light bulb, as if anyone can do it.” after a brief hiatus in 1985, soul asylum regrouped with drummer grant young and pushed ahead, releasing “made to be broken” in 1986 and “while you were out” in 1987. Their tuneful rock and energetic work ethic drew attention from several major labels, including a&m, which signed the foursome in ’87. “hangtime,” soul asylum’s 1988 major label debut, was considerably more polished and radio-ready than previous efforts, and the songs “somewhere to return” and “cartoon” made their way on to mtv’s alternative show “120 minutes” and became minor hits. “when i was making ‘hangtime,’ i was really trying to make the gnarliest, most eccentric punk rock that i could come up with,” pirner remembers. “but in retrospect, it sounded like punk rock rush because every song had a million parts. i realized that it’s all really about exploring.”
Success, compromise
while “hangtime” enjoyed moderate commercial success, the band’s 1990 follow-up, “soul asylum and the horse They rode in on,” seemed to be neglected by the label and ignored by the press. pirner and his songwriting partner, murphy, took a break to reassess their song craft and musical careers. with clear heads and a pile of new compositions, they jumped ship from a&a to columbia in 1992 and recorded what was to become their strongest collection of power-pop/rock songs: “grave dancers union.” The album also ushered in another major change in soul asylum’s lineup when they dismissed young for sterling campbell, a technically dazzling drummer who’d played previously with david bowie, cyndi lauper and duran duran. “ ‘grave dancers union’ was really pivotal for the musicians involved,” pirner said. “(making the album) was the first time the band had ever experienced any-

thing like having an a&r guy walking into the studio and saying something like, ‘you’ve gotta replace your drummer.’ That’s when sterling campbell entered the band, and that was the first time i’d personally experienced playing with someone of such a technical level, musical instinct and ability to interpret in a way that has a groove to it. now the whole band is kind of like that ... except for me being me. “The first time i heard sterling play drums was to a song i had written called ‘new world,’ and i cried because i never knew that one of my songs could actually sound that good,” pirner added. “The only reason why it didn’t was because the drummer couldn’t play it.” The acoustic ballad “runaway train,” an unusually sensitive song from pirner’s repertoire, became a huge hit, and alternative rock radio and mtv embraced the band. with his long, matted, blond dreadlocks and ripped-up look, pirner was becoming a bona-fide rock star and grunge heartthrob. The 1995 album “let your dim light shine” sounded even slicker than “grave dancers union” thanks to production from butch vig (garbage, nirvana). The singles “Just like anyone” and “misery” did ok on the alt-rock charts, but pirner and the band grew increasingly uncomfortable and unsatisfied with their commercialized production, and they resented meddling and interference from label execs during the sessions. by the time they released “candy from a stranger” in 1998, columbia had lost interest and enthusiasm despite the strength of solid songs like the lone hit “i will still be laughing.” disappointing album sales and indifference from the rock media led to another period of hiatus for the band.
Detours, comebacks
The early 2000s were difficult for pirner. while he continued to write songs, collaborate with friends, and record demos and singles (he released a solo album in 2002 titled “faces & names”), he felt more and more unmotivated and a bit
stuck in his role as a punk/ grunge rock character. pirner left his longtime twin cities home base in 1999 and relocated to new orleans. The move eventually led him to dig into new sounds, styles and themes. gradually, he felt more inspired to write and play than he had in years. even after dealing with the loss of longtime bandmate mueller, who died from esophageal cancer in 2005, pirner garnered the strength and motivation he needed to push on. “The more i learn about music, the more demanding i become of how it should go,” he said. “i moved to new orleans for very specific musical reasons. i was on a quest for rhythm, in a way. if you slice it and dice it into swing and jazz and punk rock and country, and you make a roux out of it ... i’m not sure what you get, but there’s a universal language to it. it’s not hard for me to understand how rock music works. but jazz seems a little more intellectual and complicated. it’s something i wanted to be exposed to so that i could get beyond the pale of folk-rock.” soul asylum’s latest effort, “delayed reaction,” is the band’s first official release in six years. pirner and his crew took their time arranging, reworking and fine-tuning the new tracks, free from distraction and major-label pressure. “it has taken a long time, for sure, because it’s really hard to replace a dead guy,” pirner said. “but it’s been great finding somebody who fits in musically. winston roye is like a dream bass player for me. i’m the main architect of the arrangements and playing, so when we go through the process of recording and re-recording, it’s evident to me who’s doing a great job of interpreting and who’s not. how it fits together is very important to me. it’s like screws and bolts; if you have the wrong thing in the wrong place, it’s not going to work.” fortunately, much of the guitar-driven, harmonyladen pop, rock and soul of “delayed reaction” works as well as anything from soul asylum’s heyday. last summer, soul asy-
lum performed a set of classics and punk covers in minneapolis at the legendary music venue first avenue in celebration of the 20th anniversary of “grave dancers union.” it was one of original guitarist dave murphy’s last shows with the band before announcing his departure. despite the shake-up, pirner and the newly solidified version of soul asylum seem more determined
than ever. The latest single, “gravity,” climbed into the top 10 at alternative radio. The band recently wrapped several recording sessions in los angeles for the followup to “delayed reaction,” and they plan to continue touring around the u.s. through the rest of the year. “danny being on the way out was a bit of a long time coming, and i was pretty down and out about the whole thing,” pirner said.
“but the band has experienced a rebirth this (last) year. it’s shock and awe, man. i can’t believe how we’ve regrouped in such a way together.” pirner and soul asylum will headline The pour house saturday night with miles nielsen (son of cheap trick’s rick nielsen) and the rusted hearts. expect a rock-solid delivery of old faces, new tunes and a few surprises.

super bowl Parties PhotograPhs by marie rodriguez
neither the san francisco 49ers nor the baltimore ravens had ever lost in the super bowl, but that changed as the two squared off in super bowl Xlvii on sunday. adding to the drama of what already was a great game was the fact that two brothers were squaring off as head coaches: John harbaugh for the ravens and Jim harbaugh for the 49ers. and, as tradition goes, the commercials and halftime show, this year by beyonce, were a big draw for many. the ravens ended up taking the title, and as the roost and mellow mushroom in avondale were flooded with purple, Dylan Jones, Marina Leite and Abby Potts at Mellow the partying went well past the final play. see more Mushroom Avondale. photos at charlestonscene.com.

ace’s on bridge
By BOBBY WOLFF
When West led the heart king against six spades, declarer took it and played the two top trumps, both defenders following. He then turned to the club suit. If East had held the last trump, the slam would have been made. East could ruff in whenever he chose, buthewouldhavenoheart to return. Declarer could then discard both his heart losers on dummy’s clubs. But today it was West who ruffed the third club, and he cashed two hearts to put the slam two down. Since you are booked to lose a trump trick, even if the spade suit breaks 3-2, the critical trump trick must be lost to East, who is known to be the safe hand. After winning the heart lead, you should play a trump toward your
hand and win with the ace. You then return to dummy with a diamond to lead another trump. When the queen appears from East, you must duck. You can then win East’s return, draw the last trump, and discard your two heart losers. This play is indicated because hearts are known to be 6-1. Had West not bid, the line found at the table would probably have been best. Incidentally, you would make the same sort of play if your trumps were A-Q-7-6-3. After finessing the spade queen, you would return to dummy to lead asecondroundoftrumps.Whenever the spade king appeared from East, you would duck it, keeping West off lead for the duration of the deal.

ear abby: Thank you for the compassion you showed “wants to be a mom,” the 15-year-old girl considering motherhood with her almost 18-year-old boyfriend. having lost her dad at an early age and having a mother who prefers drugs over her daughter, must have made this young lady feel very unwanted. i understand why she might think a baby would give her the love she’s missing. i applaud you for not judging her, but instead kindly helping her to understand the consequences of her potential actions. i wish her the best and hope she’ll have the wisdom to realize how important an education will be for her future. with luck, in a few years she’ll be a young adult ready to assume the responsibilities of being a parent. — linda in michigan DEAR LINDA: “Wants” was smart to write for advice before acting on impulse. She deserved a thoughtful response and not just a reprimand. Readers had much to say about her letter: dear abby: at 15, i had the first of my five daughters. by the time i was 20 i was raising the babies by myself. would i do it all over again? not in this lifetime! “wants,” your boyfriend is immature. he should finish
dear abby school and get a job before thinking about children. you are only 15 and have your best years ahead. one thing that never crossed my mind was how i would be able to support my child without an education. i learned the hard way. if you and your grandma aren’t getting along, it’s up to you to change your attitude. grandma has more experience than you do in this world. listening to her will help you avoid many of the pitfalls that i went through, and that you face presently. — was there once in washington dear abby: That 15-year-old’s boyfriend’s desire for her to have a baby seems like a control issue to me, and it will set the tone for their relationship. she needs to say no or she will most likely be under his power for the foreseeable future. i have seen this happen too many times with high school girls. — former teacher in the northwest write dear abby at www. dearabby.com.
