he mud run scene in charleston just got a bit muddier. The rugged Maniac series, in its third year at Boone hall plantation, serves almost as a preseason test for mudders, who have three mud/obstacle course runs in the charleston area for three consecutive weeks. rugged Maniac, one of several corporations that organize mud runs nationally, moved from the fourth saturday in March to this saturday. participants, which have numbered in the 2,000 to 4,000 range the past two years, should be prepared for chillier than usual mud and water obstacles in the 5k featuring 18 challenges. Meanwhile, charleston’s original mud/obstacle race, the 17th annual citadel Bulldog challenge, which is typically held this saturday, has moved to april 20 and is bracketed by two other events. The semi-inaugural Mega Mud run challenge (which did a bit of a trial run last fall) precedes the Bulldog challenge by one week. The event will be held april 13 at legare Farms on Johns island. and the first project Mud will be april 27 at the charleston tea plantation on wadmalaw island. project Mud bumps up with the first mud run in the state, the 20-year-old usMc ultimate challenge Mud run at Fort Jackson in columbia. Bottom line: if you like mud runs, you couldn’t be happier than a hog after the rainiest February in charleston’s history.

charleston film festival Terrace owner aims to ‘fill a void’ Staff report

s

ome good movies wouldn’t get screened if it weren’t for film festivals and the dedicated people who organize them. paul Brown, owner of the terrace Theater on James island, is a one-time film producer and perennial cinema enthusiast who loves good visual storytelling and insists on sharing his passion with the community. The fourth annual charleston Film Festival, an intensive four-day festival hosted by the terrace, seeks to “fill a void” left by mainstream commercial theater chains that can’t, or won’t, offer independent movies, documentaries and other auteur cinema, he said. “The film festival allows me to

show unusual films that wouldn’t normally screen here,” Brown said. a dozen feature-length films and four shorts are scheduled to be screened today through sunday, including the thriller “inescapable”; the critically acclaimed drama “rust and Bone,” featuring Marion cotillard; Michael apted’s latest in his “up” series; and the well-received documentary about climate change called “chasing ice.” The festival also will feature films of local interest, including the starstudded feature film “savannah” and the documentary “The education of harvey gantt.” The following are reviews of some of the films showing at the festival.

t is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness” was a favorite chinese proverb of the late “peanuts” cartoonist charles schultz. photographer James rBalog must have taken that to heart as he noticed changes to the wild world he documents, and heard all the cursing dominating the discussion of global climate change. so Balog set up time-lapse camera gear and mounted them in front of a number of the world’s glaciers for three years. and in starkly beautiful, simple and damning images, he showed glaciers disappearing so fast he had to reaim his cameras just to follow their rapid decline. “chasing ice” is a beautiful documentary that follows Balog, who often works for national geographic, in his dogged quest to silence the blizzard of denial that the film sums up in montages of tv footage. ideologues such as sean hannity and rush

limbaugh use “al gore” as a curse word to dismiss the overwhelming evidence and the unified scientific research that burning fossil fuels has warmed the planet and is melting the world’s ice, from pole to pole. Balog answers them with simple, blunt images. “chasing ice” follows the photographer as he works out how he’s going to photograph this process in iceland, greenland, Montana and alaska.

Filmmaker Jeff orlowski rides along as Balog visits scientists who have the ice core samples than give testimony to the rising levels of carbon in the atmosphere. Film cameras sit in as Balog meets other scientists who link the longer droughts, harsher fire and tropical storm seasons to the warming planet. and here’s the head of the world’s largest reinsurance company, the insurer to the world’s insurers, to reassure that, yes, this is happening, and, yes, it’s already costing his company, and us, a fortune.

o see “56 up” is to be reunited with an old friend. Make that 13 old friends, together again for a documentary project the likes of which the world has never seen. it all started in 1964, when Britain’s granada tv gathered 7-year-old schoolchildren from divergent economic backgrounds and asked them to talk about their dreams, ambitions, and fears for the future. That 40-minute program went so well that future director Michael apted (“coal Miner’s daughter,” “gorillas in the Mist”), who was a researcher on the original show, came back to interview everyone seven years later to see what the passage of time had done to their thinking. he’s been back every seven years since, making for a remarkable string of documentary features that add up to a matchless portrait of our time. one idea behind the original “seven up,” inspired by the Jesuit notion of “give me the child until he is seven and i will give you the man,” was to see whether england was still in the grip of a dickensian class system that doomed the children of the poor to inferior lives. one message of “56 up” and in fact the entire series is that personality and

resilience trump economic station as a predictor of happiness (though obviously not material comfort). as one of the group says, “life is not there to be regretted, life is there to be lived.” apted also has been the interviewer on all the documentaries, and that continuity has been invaluable in encouraging from-the-heart candor from the participants. They speak to him as if they were talking to an old friend. More than previous episodes, “56 up” deals with the annoyance interviewees feel about how the world has reacted to their stories. several felt irked that viewers tend to think they know all about them when they really don’t, and in point of fact three of the original 14 were irritated enough to leave the series at one time or another, with only one still absent.

peter, who is newly returned after a 28-year absence, is candid that he is returning now because he is happier and because he wants to publicize good intentions, the band he is now in. nei has had perhaps the most unconventional life path of any of the group. he was a homeless wanderer in the scottish highlands at 28. But for the past seven years he’s been living in cumbre in northwest england and serving with distinction in local government. you never know. perhaps the most resilient of “56 up’s” participants are a trio of women — sue, lynn and Jackie — who were best friends growing up in london’s lower-class east end and have weathered all manner of difficulties with enviable unflappability.

film ‘hava nagila’ finds laughs, purpose in song By roger Moore MCT

ou’d expect a movie about a song that has become the hebrew “hokey pokey” to be playful. and “hava nagila (The Movie)” is that, in spades. That wedding, party and bar mitzvah staple, a song that the whole world knows and virtually no one knows anything about, is a ready punchline, a musical eyeroller for some and a nobrainer for any band or singer who works the wedding circuit — Jewish or not. “something lights up in your dna” when you hear it, one expert witness declares in the film. But roberta grossman’s cute documentary gives weight to the tune, tracing its lineage to a town — sadagora in the ukraine — and the 19th century. it bubbled to life as a “nigun,” a wordless hymn or prayer, more hummed than sung. it became the song to which to dance the hora (that hand-holding circular group folk dance). a Jewish music scholar in palestine co-opted it and wrote lyrics to it for a celebration of the defeat of the ottoman empire in world war i. it became a favorite yossi from page e8

‘oz’ gets the story right, if not the witches By roger Moore MCT

n the movies’ version of March Madness, sam raimi turns out to be a much better tim Burton than Bryan singer. unlike “giant slayer” singer, sam’s got a sense of humor. taking on a prequel to the fairy tale that frightened generations, sam does scary. and does it well. “oz the great and powerful” is a winning backengineering of the oz fantasy, a “how the wizard got to be wonderful” romp that is a stunning update with “The wizard of oz’s” effects, and the most gorgeous use of 3-d since “alice in wonderland.” screenwriters Mitchell kapner and david lindsayabaire manage just enough whimsy to make the movie’s two hours pass without irritation. raimi, having cut his teeth on horror and brought “spider-Man” to life, was the right guy to make this emerald-tinted world pop off the 3-d screen. But the cast, plainly packed with second or third choices, lets it down. is there anything in James Franco’s past that

he’s amusingly voiced by Zach Braff. oz must trek and travel by bubble through the far corners of oz and sort out who the real villain is and how to fight the hideous, 3-d flying baboons who have supplanted the flying monkeys. Franco, as oz, turns on the charm and oozes insincerity as he passes on what he’s learned, conning small-town tent-show audiences: “lies, the stepping stones on the road to greatness.” But the witches — an oscar winner, an oscar nominee and a golden globe nominee among them — haven’t the necessary vamp to make these conjurers sing. a trip to “wicked” would have helped. even with the stunning production design, done by “alice in wonderland” oscar winner robert stromberg, which starts our story in a black-and-white kansas, where humor and pathos pop up, even with danny eflman’s playful score, this “oz” starts to drag in under an hour. you may miss the witches’ guards’ (raimi crony Bruce campbell is one) song: “oooo weee oh.” as the “cli-

balloon lifted by a cyclone taking him somewhere over the rainbow. The film fills in that oscar, nicknamed oz, left behind the Baum Bros. circus, where he performed with faithful assistant Frank (Zach Braff). it also gives us annie (Michelle williams), whom he loves but for whom huckster oz feels he’s not good enough. yet after reaching the magical land whose name he shares, he meets her lookalike, glinda, along with her fellow witches, evanora (rachel weisz) and Theodora (Mila kunis). he also finds a faithful assistant in winged

Though disney had wanted to shoot in slightly more cost-effective vancouver, the

director wanted to help his home state’s film industry, he said. “i begged disney to let it go there, and they were very kind to let me do that.” like lindsay-abaire, the formidable Franco, an academy award-nominee for “127 hours” (2010), also wasn’t originally attached to the film: robert downey Jr. and Johnny depp had been in negotiations first to play oz. “i didn’t mind at all, especially because those are two of the biggest actors around,” said a sanguine Franco. “They’re great at playing please see Franco, page e11

The bistec chapin from El Chapin Centro Americano Restaurant.

el chapin finds its fare in guatemalan staples

By roB young Special to The Post and Courier

hapin is code for guatemalan, referring to the people of the central american country. and in the case of the extensively titled el chapin centro americano restaurant, it references the indigenous flavors of the region. Find the restaurant on remount road directly across from the hot spot gas station and convenience store. The proprietors more recently removed the black tint from el chapin’s windows, improving the restaurant’s appearance. inside the clean, bright, but sparsely decorated venue, the menu pays tribute to a guatemalan diet that features avocadoes, beans, plantains, rice and tortillas.

what: el chapin centro americano restaurant where: 1262 remount road, north charleston for more info: 5293376 Best example: desayuno ($6.99), a simple, tasty dish generally associated with breakfast that consists of eggs, beans, cheese and fried plantains. But el chapin also delves heavily in beef entrees, working the finely sliced cuts into meals such as the bistec chapin ($10.99), which is like a steak and eggs dish on steroids, pumped up with rice, beans, avocado, cucumbers and shrimp, all ready to be wrapped in warm tortillas.

it’s quite good; the beef is seasoned and cooked with pepper flakes, jibing splendidly with the poached eggs. el chapin’s reach extends further, too, encompassing steak, onion and liver dishes, along with adobo marinated pork ($8.75), pork chops cooked a la plancha ($8.95) and pork rinds with yucca ($9). The spicy deviled shrimp, fried tilapia and a veracruzstyle tilapia made with a tomato sauce help fill out the menu. of course, one also could fill up on huaraches, burritos, quesadillas and tacos made from beef, chicken, pork, cow’s cheeks and tongue. at any rate, it’s certainly a menu and region worth engaging and exploring.

Whet your appetite.

vietnam

in an electrified haze wafting through influences dominated by the likes of art rock icons the velvet undergound, vietnam (not to be confused with the atlanta-based new wave band vietnam) has spent more than eight years atop an especially crowded new york indie rock culture. stirring elements of blues and psychedelic art rock around in alternating patterns and doses, vietnam was signed by vice records in 2004 after being recognized as playing a leading role in the rebirth of n.y. avant-garde rock. after releasing its debut ep, “The concrete’s always grayer on the other side of the street,” in 2004, the band went through a series of personnel changes that have led to vocalist/

The band’s latest album,

“an a.merican d.ream,” came out just last month. vietnam will perform Friday at The royal american, 970 Morrison drive, with rachel kate and Justin Jones. tickets are $10 at the door. show starts at 9 p.m. go to theroyalamerican. com for more information.

bloodkin

Though not particularly well-known on a mainstream level, athens, ga.-

based band Bloodkin has earned the respect of some of rock music’s biggest names. vocalist/guitarist daniel hutchens and backup vocalist/guitarist eric carter started Bloodkin in the ’80s, writing and performing a distinct formulation of americana, country and rock music. despite having several of their songs covered by multiple bands, most notably widespread panic, and hutchens recording and performing with ex-velvet underground member Moe tucker throughout the early ’90s, hutchens and carter had yet to release a full album of their own. in 1994, Bloodkin recorded its first full-length album, titled “good luck charm,” produced by Johnny sandlin (allman Brothers, eddie hinton), solidifying the duo as a recording band. Bloodkin has released eight albums since then, working

with such acclaimed producers as John keane (r.e.M., cowboy Junkies) and david Barbe (son volt, drive-By truckers). Bloodkin will perform saturday at the pour house, 1977 Maybank highway, to celebrate its 25th year together as well as the release of its box set, “one long hustle.” tickets are $10 in advance, $12 the day of the show, and are available online at etix. com or at the door. doors open at 9 p.m. call 571-4343 or go to charlestonpourhouse.com for more information.

mandolin orange

relative newcomer Mandolin orange wasted little time in making an impact. The modern folk/rock and country-grass duo from chapel hill, n.c., strips away all the nonsense and wraps its songs instead in a sincerity that lingers long after the song falls silent.

perhaps it’s for that reason that andrew Marlin and emily Frantz have caught the attention of so many, including rosanne cash, chatham county line and steep canyon rangers, all of whom have performed with the pair. with its debut album, “Quiet little room,” released in 2010, Mandolin orange is quickly gaining a wide fan base, having already toured in the u.k. and north america. The duo released its latest effort, “haste Make/ hard hearted stranger,” in 2011. Mandolin orange will perform tonight at the pour house, 1977 Maybank highway, with The south carolina Broadcasters. tickets are $8 and are available online at etix.com or at the door. doors open at 8:30 p.m. call 571-4343 or go to charlestonpourhouse.com for more information.

listening to “kitchen kongas” by the band vietnam, one might get the idea that the writer and frontman Michael gerner is a bit unstable. That is in no way meant to be a cut at gerner; quite the contrary. eccentricities like the ones that show up on “an a.merican d.ream” are welcome to those of us who don’t need auto-tune or copycat sounds.

The history of rock ’n’ roll abounds with supergroups: bands made up of members of other notable bands. From crosby, stills & nash and Blind Faith in the ’60s to more recent collaborations such as audioslave and velvet revolver, the material might be hit or miss, but it is almost always interesting to see what the group of musicians has up its collective sleeve. The latest supergroup calls itself atoms for peace. Made up of radiohead’s Thom yorke, red hot chili peppers bassist Flea and former r.e.M. drummer Joey waronker, as well as musicians nigel

also great is “dancing out in space,” which itself is actually danceable. Bowie fans hoping for a tour to support this new album will likely be disappointed. Bowie has expressed zero interest in touring, and isn’t even doing interviews for the new album. But hey, look on the bright side, you have a new Bowie album to enjoy. key tracks: “where are we now,” “valentine’s day,” “dancing out in space”

gerner has a lot to say on this new album, and through songs such as “stucco roofs” and “Flyin’,” gerner gets to express himself in spades. each of the songs on “an a.merican d.ream” seem to emerge from some dream-drenched background to have its individual say before fading back into the ether. particularly beautiful is “Fight water with Fire,” which emerges from a deceptively simple guitar riff to become the heart and soul of the album. The entire album reminds you of

the days when content, as well as a healthy dose of experimentation, still truly mattered in the record business. The album also marks the return of that feeling of joy that comes from listening to a record from beginning to end. For the more musically curious and adventurous, vietnam will be performing at The royal american on Friday night. see Page 16 for details.

godrich and Mauro refosco, this supergroup definitely features one of the more diverse lineups in recent memory. originally formed in 2009 to serve as yorke’s backing band for his solo tour supporting the album “The eraser,” the band began experimenting a bit while on the road and soon was producing its own original music. The first thing you’re likely to notice while listening to “amok,” the new album from atoms for peace, is that the normally sullen and emotionally fragile yorke actually seems like he might be having fun on more than a few of the songs. From the south american-flavored electronica of “Before your very eyes ...” to the mysterious yet upbeat “ingenue” to

the funky “stuck together pieces,” this is an album that seems to be going five different directions at once. while that can make for some interesting listening, it also is ultimately the album’s weakness. By flitting here and there to various styles and tempos with only the element of electronica to bring them together, there is a disjointed feel to the cd. still, in an age where a song about a thrift shop can top the charts, we should encourage this sort of experimentation.

n today’s music world, a video can be as important as the song. consider “gangnam style.” without the horsey-dance and the images of the clever, slightly chubby singer known as psy, would the song have ever become a ubiquitous international anthem? For most of the 2000s, many musicians and videographers worried that the music video was a dying art form. The cable tv channels that made videos mainstream throughout the ’80s and ’90s stopped showing them altogether in favor of realitybased programming. although budgets haven’t rebounded to their milliondollar-plus levels, the advent of youtube as a primary means of video media consumption has brought music videos back into the limelight. one local artist’s latest video, in fact, is about to take center stage this week at Provided south by southwest, or sXsw, in austin, texas, one of Righchus and the makers of his “Stroker’s Row” music video experimented with light painting. The restriction of not having money can actually inspire you because without the production value, it’s got to stand out in a different way.” righchus put his faith in engel’s ability to make his music stand out, recognizing the importance of a visual aspect to his song in the youtube era. “if you have a song and you don’t have a video, the song doesn’t exist,” states righchus. “it only takes one video to really take an artist far, and i think ‘stroker’s row’ is that video.”

work from home, so far. likewise, engel hopes to keep up ties to charleston. a veteran of the “army wives” set and an extra on the film “The notebook” before moving to hollywood, he commends south carolina’s film industry tax incentives, but worries that if they are not continued, the state will lose film business to more welcoming places. sometime soon, engel hopes to begin work on a feature film he’s been planning, and he’s heavily considering filming close to home. “My dream is always to, at some point, come back to charleston,” he said. “it’s such an underrated city to film in.” “stroker’s row” ultimately was filmed in engel’s apartment, not just because of the view, but because of the difficulty of finding anywhere else to shoot in l.a., where everyone expects payment and the law is full of complicated regulations. “what i miss about south carolina is that you can go up to a local business owner and ask to shoot in their business, and they’re thrilled,” engel said. “i don’t think it’s bad that people from charleston go to l.a. to get that experience because we can bring that back. all that any production in l.a. cares about is taxes, and charleston can really compete.”

The filmmaker said he’s often more satisfied with the result of his lower budget work than the fullproduction projects. “The snoop dogg video had this huge budget — it was more money than i’d ever seen — but i felt like i made some mistakes,” engel said. “with all that money comes

artists dayton colie and Michael Fowler will be showing concurrent solo exhibitions at the north charleston city gallery this month. each artists’ works are unusual and quite different from one another: colie works in watercolors and Fowler in oils. “every day when (art teacher) dayton colie walks out of his classroom at r.B. stall high school, he encounters music. The marching band, the steel drums class and the chorus can be heard right down the hall. The rhythms and melodies created by the students permeate his soul on a daily basis,” explains city of north charleston arts coordinator ann simmons. it was this experience of the students and the music that inspired this series, called “Band of Blue.” The artist said, “The students’ talent has both a positive effect on the community and the people around them. Few people get to see this powerful reality, so i’ve decided to share what i have seen and heard with the public.” Fowler’s series, “recent huescapes,” consists of landscape oil paintings created from memory and imagination. “These lyrical paintings are crafted with a formalist approach, focusing on both color and shape relationships,” said simmons. Fowler said, “often the act of painting, and then contemplating the product, consists of insights and feelings, which can have no verbal explanation. My artistic experiences with paint, and

ace’s on bridge

By BOBBY WOLFF

Against South’s contract of three no-trump, from a pair game, West led the spade eight, and most declarers held up the spade ace for one round, but then took the second spade trick. The contract could not be made without bringing in the club suit, so some players took the simplistic approach of playing ace, and another club to West’s king, whereupon 10 tricks rolled in. At other tables, the more astute Wests unblocked their club king underdeclarer’sace, appreciating that their partner must hold the jack. Otherwise, why had South not entered dummy and led toward his club jack, to keep East, the danger hand, off lead? Another declarer crossed to dummywithaheartattrickthree,

andledtheclubfive, underwhich East sleepily followed with the three. Declarer played the eight, and West was forced to win with the king, after which there was no defense. The unluckiest declarer of all crossedtodummyandledasmall club. East inserted the 10 (which suggested ownership of the jack), and when South played the ace, West unblocked the king. Now the contract had to fail. There is no guaranteed route to success. Best is for South to lead toward the club queen at trick three, and West must duck his king. Declarer puts up the queen and leads a low club from dummy, on which East plays the jack (NOT the 10). Now South has to guess whether to duck or win the trick.

ead2head is not claiming to have watched The cw network’s “The carrie diaries,” a prequel to hBo’s “sex and the city.” But the idea of it has made us nostalgic for the decade it is set in: the 1980s. with its “Brat pack” movies, awesome fashion trends (shoulder pads, stirrup pants, leg warmers ... need we say more) and a song about wearing sunglasses at night, it’s definitely time to revisit the ’80s. current trivia champ randy chase is being challenged by office manager colleen Myers.

quESTIONS

1. which of the following movies was not directed by John hughes: “Pretty in Pink,” “the breakfast club,” “say anything” or “weird science”? 2. what is the name of the care bears’ home in the clouds? 3. sony introduced a portable cassette player in the ’80s that changed the way people listened to music. what was it called? 4. who were the parents on the tv show “family ties”? 5. what ’80s soda had “twice the caffeine” as other sodas on the market? 6. who of the following was not an original mtv vJ: nina blackwood, adam curry, martha Quinn or alan hunter? 7. what late ’80s pop sensation had their grammy revoked for not singing the vocals on their album? 8. in a speech in berlin in 1987, who said, “mr. gorbachev, tear down this wall”? 9. what video game launched in 1984 was named by electronic gaming monthly in its 100th issue as the best of all time? 10. what ’80s accessory came in a bunch of different designs, were worn two or three at a time, had its own accessory called a “guard” and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year?

CONCLuSION colleen proved to be a master of all things ’80s, falling just short of having a perfect score. she’ll return next week in an attempt to hold on to her head2head trivia champ title.

ear aBBy: i am writing to you because i can share this anonymously. i am close to 60 years old and i’m terrified of the dentist. every time i pick up the phone to make an appointment, i get so anxious i feel like i’m going to die. do you think i will be able to find a caring, compassionate and nonjudgmental dentist? are they out there? sometimes i wish i could die instead of going to the dentist. am i crazy? — Mrs. anXiety in the usa DEAR MRS. ANXIETY: Let me put it this way, if you’re crazy, you have a lot of company. Many people fear going to the dentist. However, there have been improvements in the field since you were a child, including sedation for people who choose “not to be there” while their dental problems are being attended to. Good dental health is important to overall health, so please don’t put off making an appointment. Tell the person who is booking the appointment what your needs are, and if that dentist can’t accommodate you, ask for a referral to one who can. dear aBBy: i have been a nanny for four families over the past 10 years. i am now working for a family of five.

i don’t make a lot of money, but i enjoy what i do. My problem is all the giftbuying i feel required to do, such as on the children’s birthdays, christmas and the mom’s birth of more babies. My employer is expecting yet another baby this summer, and her 3-year-old has another birthday coming up. i’m tired of the gift-buying and really can’t afford to do it anymore. when the new baby is born, i am tempted to just say, “congratulations!” any suggestions? — giFted out DEAR GIFTED OUT: Yes. When the newest addition to the family arrives, give your employer a nice card. You should not be expected to come up with a gift. You already are giving these children loving and responsible care, and that is gift enough. dear abby is written by abigail van buren, also known as jeanne phillips, and was founded by her mother, pauline phillips. write dear abby at www. dearabby.com.
