f you thought the mud run trend was crazy popular, you haven’t seen anything yet. color runs, the first of which arrives in the charleston area on Saturday at the exchange park in ladson, are sweeping the nation, much as mud runs have in the past five years. for the uninitiated, color runs got their inspiration from holi, the spring festival of colors celebrated by hindus primarily in india and nepal. Subtract the religion and add a 5k where participants are bombed with packets of neon corn starch, and the modern american phenomenon of the color run was born. Just like mud and obstacle races, several upstarts by young business people, relying primarily on facebook to market the events, have seized the opportunity to put on color runs. among them are The color run, color Me rad, color vibe, gnarly neon and the nighttime version, neon Splash dash. as of last Saturday, 7,415 had signed up for color Me rad in ladson, according to wyatt grow, the utah-based race director. with in-person registration 11 a.m.-7 p.m. today and friday, grow expects that number to top out at around 8,000. late registration is $45. “Things in charleston are going well,” said grow, who, with friends from Brigham young university, directs both color Me rad and The dirty dash mud and obstacle races. to put those numbers in perspective, the second largest race in charleston in 2012 was the record-breaking 35th annual turkey day run with 5,833 finishers.

granted, color runs can’t be compared to competitive road races. color runs aren’t timed, which grow thinks is part of the appeal. Surveys show that 40 percent of participants have never participated in a run before color Me rad events. But bigger than the noncompetitive nature of the event, grow credits the popularity to “being part of something that is visually beautiful.” www.colormerad.com and

She hates to be touched, becomes even more of a loner at school, and loses herself in memories of her newly deceased dad (dermot Mulroney) and the heightened sense of the outdoors that he taught her to love. Then dad’s brother (Matthew goode) shows up, all sympathy and smiles. he consoles evelyn. what does he want from india? “to be friends.” She falls under his spell, and his protection. kip past the lame title and weary Stone age premise. “The croods” is the first pleasant surprise of spring, a gorgeous kids’ cartoon with heart and wit, if not exactly a firm grasp of paleontology. it’s about a family of cave men and women who have survived, unlike their neighbors, by minimizing risk. But risk is how we grow, how we better our lives and achieve great things. That’s just one of the things the croods learn as their world turns upside down: literally. earthquakes and volcanoes do tend to upend a neighborhood. daddy grug, hilariously and sensitively voiced by nicolas cage, has just one motto, one he reinforces in their cave as he tells stories and animates his lessons on the cave wall: “never be not afraid.” his athletic daughter, eep (an energetic emma Stone), may bristle at that as she invents rock climbing, parkour and assorted other dangerous sports while exploring their limited world. But fear has kept them all — grug, eep, mother ugga (catherine keener), lunky

The animation is first rate, even if the cutesy critters bear the hallmarks of co-director chris Sanders’ “lilo & Stitch” and “how to train your dragon”: wide, round faces, big cuddly eyes. another Sanders touch? emotion. for all the (mostly weak) wisecracks about grug wishing his mother-in-law dead, “The croods” has a warm sense of family, responsibility and letting dad save face.

The youngest has movements based on a terrier.” yeah, they knew their dreamworks movie would be compared to fox’s lucrative “ice age” series. The hollywood reporter

said, “ ‘The croods’ is too uneven to help it approach that series’ mammoth market share. But its mostly fastmoving roller coaster of kinetic action and its menagerie of fantastic creatures — from cute to menacing — should keep kids entertained.” and, as critic david rooney notes, kids will have “no trouble grasping the simple message to face your fears and embrace change.” That’s what the filmmakers were aiming for, “that take away every modern reference,

from society to police, and human nature is still basically the same,” Sanders said. Some, especially the young, embrace change. and some, like the parents and grandparents, resist it. “it’s a great metaphor, having a guy confronting change when his world is literally changing under his feet,” said de Micco. That, he adds, went on their “what do we want in our caveman movie?” list. “and it went at the very top.”

Butler is fine in this part, which demands little more of him than an ability to change magazines like he’s done it before. Many times. Mike has skills, which works against this “die hard.” This isn’t John Mcclane, ordinary cop in over his head. Mike Banning has “special forces” on his resume, which robs the picture of some of its suspense. But there’s pathos here amid the carnage. a good cast (Melissa leo is a feisty secretary of defense) does what it can with a tin-eared script, making us care who lives and who dies. as an interesting side story, Mike’s wife (radha Mitchell) is a nurse who deals with the carnage of america’s darkest

day in an overwhelmed hospital emergency room. Better thrillers make more of the whole shaky state of command in such calamities, wavering over terrorist demands, stringing out the suspense and playing up the clock ticking down toward whatever nuclear doomsday awaits should our hero fail. director antoine fuqua (“Shooter”) is plainly dealing with a script that shortchanges all that, and he’s not good enough to overcome it. for all the bursts of blood, the gunplay and executionstyle head-shots that punctuate scores of deaths, it’s hard to see “olympus has fallen” (that’s Secret Service code) as much more than another movie manifestation of a firstperson shooter video game. we’ve become a head-shot nation, and our thrillers are the poorer for it.

ere’s the thing about the collective coffee co.: The title is textbook, completely on the mark. The collective is almost like a dreamy Super friends creation, teaming a few of the folks behind downtown’s defunct hope and union coffee shop with the owners of the Bagel Shop on george Street. heck, even Stuart tracy of Butcher & Bee went in on the menu. So, first, it’s no wonder that the bagel chips at the collective are so good. Second, it’s no wonder that the shop plays so well, as it gains from a think-tank of baristas, bagel brainpower and assorted talent. cheers to liz and Sinan aktar, proprietors of the Bagel Shop, for spearheading the effort. chief among their benefactors? friendly servers and staff welcome you to the restaurant, but whatever system that should be in place to assure the flow of the dining experience from order in to service was very much missing at the time of this review visit. a simple cup of soup languished far too long in the kitchen; a burger spent too much time on the griddle. helter-skelter described the way the servers were assigned their sections, and even though the manager on duty was tethered to a headset, it did little to foster communication from the back of the house to the front of the house. The smiles and friendliness of the staff are diminished by the waits for food, random spills and few systems in obvious place to actually manage a dinner service. The private party room was in use for two separate events that evening, and i did question if the larger parties were tripping up the kitchen. But in fairness to all the diners, The wreckfish should staff for those events. That being said, the portions will more than satisfy, the prices are quite fair and if you bypass the fried food, a simple meal of seafood can be yours.

every once in a while, an established musician decides to make an album just for fun. The release of such an album usually is met with two reactions: The first camp criticizes the artist for not releasing a “serious album,” opting instead to record covers. The second group takes the album at face value and enjoys what there is to enjoy. on eric clapton’s latest, “old Sock,”

Sound City: Real to Reel/RCA

in dave grohl’s new documentary, “Sound city,” a lot of the conversation about the legendary los angeles recording studio has to do with its neve 8028 recording consoles. when the studio closed a couple of years ago, grohl purchased that soundboard and installed it in his home recording studio. Then grohl invited some friends to come over and play. “Sound city: real to reel” features 11 new originals that were written, performed and recorded on that legendary mixing board. on paper, the project looks promising,

which is in fact just that, it sounds as if Slowhand is having a great time covering songs by the likes of gary Moore, peter tosh and george gershwin. This time, i’m inclined to side with that second group. clapton has earned the right to record any sort of album he chooses, and while some of the material on “old Sock” seems a bit too adult contemporary for clapton, there’s some good stuff here. american classics such as “all of Me,” “goodnight irene” and “our love is here to Stay” sound great. particularly

but in the end, the lineup of musicians outshines the actual music they make. guests included Stevie nicks, rick Springfield, lee ving, rick nielsen, Joshua homme, trent reznor, krist novoselic and paul Mccartney. The resulting music, which was written and recorded on the fly in grohl’s studio, is hit or miss. Songs like “heaven and all” and “time Slowing down” sound like the artists are just noodling away with no finished product in sight, while other tracks do better. “you can’t fix This,” which features lead vocals by nicks, fits in perfectly with her other solo material, while ving, formerly of the legendary punk band fear, seems to have a blast belting out “your wife is calling.”

good kind of old-school country. Standout tracks include “chase the feeling,” “Bluebird wine” and a cover of allen reynolds’ “dreaming My dreams” that actually trumps the cowboy Junkies’ version, a feat i previously would have thought unattainable. if twangy americana music by two experts in the craft appeals to you, then you’ll be in heaven listening to this album. key tracks: “chase the Feeling,” “dreaming my dreams,” “bluebird wine”

good is a cover of gary Moore’s “Still got the Blues.” while not quite committing to recording only american Songbook classics like fellow Brit rod Stewart, clapton has avoided much of the schmaltzy feeling that comes when an artist turns to that ploy. instead, what fans get is a light, breezy, fun album that hopefully will be enjoyed by those that don’t take it too seriously. key tracks: “Further down the road,” “still got the blues,” “goodnight irene”

also particularly good is “Mantra,” the track grohl recorded with reznor and homme that closes out the album. The attempt to get a Beatle to record a grunge song, as is what seems to be the case with Mccartney on “cut Me Some Slack,” is dead on arrival, but it’s amusing to listen to nonetheless. definitely check out the “Sound city” documentary when you have a chance, but this musical accompaniment is less than impressive, even given its auspicious beginning cast. key tracks: “you can’t Fix this,” “a trick with no sleeve,” “mantra” — by devin grant

it’s painful, but you would never really know it when you hear it. in fact, there’s something very primal and afflicted yet still happy in a psychotic, cackling kind of way. perhaps that’s the best way to describe The royal tinfoil’s music is madly upbeat, but even that seems cliche. A winning formula

“Quidam” began as a performance under a big top tent and was converted to an arena show in 2010. fifteen tractor-trailers are required to move the set and its revolving stage between cities. over the course of six performances in the north charleston coliseum, the stage will be set in the center, with only half of the arena used for seating, creating the

feel of a giant theater. “we don’t want to have the audience too far from the action because ‘Quidam’ is a very intimate show,” explains ouellette, who has worked with various cirque productions for more than a decade, from vegas to Japan. “i’ve been impressed with how we can re-create the mood and intensity that we would have under a big top.” in his position, ouellette ensures that the lighting is please see cirque, page e23

cirque from page e22 set up appropriately at each venue and that the score works with the acoustics in the room. a band of six musicians leads the music from a stage, including violin, cello, saxophone, percussion, keys and guitar. “i have an artistic say in just about everything that concerns the show,” ouellette said. “i’m kind of the protector of the concept.” The concept of “Quidam” follows the loose plot of Zoe on her adventure, and although there is no dialogue, ouellette says it’s easy to understand the storyline. he compares Zoe and the characters in her “real world” life to those in a charles dickens novel. unlike other cirque productions, “Quidam” focuses heavily on the individualism of characters with unique traits. Still, ouellette says that enough details are left untold that the “audience can make their own story and create their own little world.” in addition to her roles in the Spanish web acrobatic act and a rope-jumping segment, performer Bouchard plays a bunny rabbit character with floppy ears (“look out for me!” she urges audiences.). after landing the job in September 2011, Bouchard traveled to Montreal for two months of intensive training. even after a long performance, she continues to train daily, oftentimes late at night after a show. “after a show, you have a pump of adrenaline, so you’re still up and ready to go,” Bouchard said. “when i’m performing, i go off the audience’s energy. i’ll do something a little different each day.” The traveling performers with “Quidam” hail from 18 countries, adding to the cultural appeal and international popularity of cirque. in addition to the acrobatics, the show also features diabolo performers (chinese yo-yo), juggling, human statues and hand balancing. one act includes a device called the german wheel, two large metal hoops manipulated by a person inside performing spins and somersaults. artists use 250 costumes

throughout the show, which includes an intermission. each performer wears between two and seven customtailored and hand-dyed costumes during the course of the evening, each of which is meticulously maintained by the traveling wardrobe team. “cirque’s brand is all about making beautiful, well-made costumes, with live music and scores that are good for years,” ouellette proclaims. “everything is unique to each production, and each production is an experience by itself.”

The nature of circus

The cirque du Soleil experience is far different from what a spectator might experience at a ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus. whereas “The greatest Show on earth” relies on a dramatic ringmaster to lead the performance, which includes wild animals and more brute feats of strength, cirque draws its roots from theater and dance. although many of the acrobatic maneuvers may find similarities with a three-

ring circus, cirque strives to create art. “when i look at a traditional circus, its mainly one act after another,” ouellette said. “There may be a big segment and then a blackout to change the set. what cirque tries to do is to really flow from one act to another, with or without stories. ‘Quidam,’ in particular, is very seamless.” apart from the awe factor of each of “Quidam’s” segments, ouellette hopes that spectators will walk away feeling inspired. The character of Quidam, portrayed as a big man with no head and carrying an umbrella, is meant to convey the image of a nameless passerby, such as an anonymous person you might see on a crowded street or someone sitting a few seats down from you at a cirque performance. it is this character that shows Zoe the door to an escape from her dull life, starting her on a voyage through the ethereal world of cirque du Soleil. “without giving too much away, ‘Quidam’ comes back at the end to encourage the audience to take their own adventure,” ouellette said. “Sometimes people say that ‘Quidam’ is dark, but i think it’s very bright — it’s just theatrical and poetic. The message of ‘Quidam’ is that it’s possible to make choices to go on your own journey and have an amazing life. anything is possible.”

ace’s on bridge

By BOBBY WOLFF

At the U.S. Nationals in Memphis, Tenn., last spring, the Stratified Open Pairs threw up a deal with a point of interest in the play. After a highly informative auction, South reached three hearts on a fourth-highest club lead from West. Declarer won in hand and advanced the diamond queen to West’s king. Back came a second club, and South won in dummy to play a second diamond. East won the ace and shifted to a low spade. What should declarer do now? The auction had strongly suggested that West, because of his failure to act earlier, was 4-6 in spades and clubs. He would surely have opened three clubs or stayed silent without a side-

suit. And the logical second suit for him to hold had to be spades. If that inference is sound, then the right line, which declarer missed at the table, is to win the spade ace, which he did. But then it was right to cash only one top trump, not both — after all, on our projected arithmetic, West could have at most one trump and South needs to retain a high trump in hand, as we shall see. If South had done that, he could then have played the diamond jack, pitching a spade from dummy. Then he could ruff a diamond, ruff a club, and lead the fifth diamond to discard the other losing spade from dummy. If East ruffs in on the third club, South overruffs and leads the fifth diamond as before.

ear aBBy: My 22-year-old daughter became pregnant from a guy she had dated only a few months, but never seriously. after weeks of wondering what she was going to do, she decided that terminating her pregnancy was the best thing to do considering she has limited income and still lives with me. i, however, am pro-life although i do feel that in cases of rape or incest it is acceptable. My daughter knows how i feel about this. i supported her in her decision, but did not agree with it. abby, i have taken this really hard. i have cried every day since she had the abortion, and i’m torturing myself thinking this is my fault because i went against everything i believe in when i supported her in her decision. why am i beating myself up about this? is it because she’s my daughter, because i am pro-life or both? how can i stop blaming myself for her decision? — tortured in the South DEAR TORTURED: The decision about whether or not to terminate the pregnancy wasn’t yours to make; it was your daughter’s. Being pro-life, you have your own convictions, but you acted as a loving parent should: You supported your child. If you feel you could benefit from counseling to help you through this, ask your doctor for a referral. dear aBBy: My husband and i are having a disagreement, and i’m wondering if you could weigh in. we keep a handgun hidden in a locked safe in our bedroom. (an access code is required to open it.) we also have a 11/2-year-old daughter. on the recommendations of a co-worker, we recently hired a baby sitter whom we used for an evening while we attended a party. She seemed like a nice young lady. My problem is, when she arrived, my husband immediately announced that we had a gun upstairs. he felt it was her

dear abby “right” to know. i think, because the gun isn’t accessible, the information was useless to her and actually may have put our family in danger. how do we know she won’t mention it to someone who will target us for a break-in in order to steal it? to me, having a (secured) firearm in our house is no one else’s business but ours. what do you think? — not the wild weSt DEAR NOT THE WILD WEST: I think you are correct. This is a subject that should have been discussed before the young woman was hired. Your husband exhibited poor judgment by sharing what should have been confidential information. dear aBBy: My colleagues and i are concerned about a close friend and co-worker. he insists that it’s not against the law to read books while driving. he says he does it only on highways because everyone is going the same speed and direction and you only need peripheral vision. in every other aspect of his life, this man follows the rules to the letter and is a highly respected teacher. is it true that this is legal? — concerned in ohio DEAR CONCERNED: Of course not! A distracted driver who is reading books is at least as dangerous as one who is eating, texting, applying makeup, shaving or talking on a cellphone. This “highly respected” teacher doesn’t have my respect; he’s a menace on the highway. write dear abby at www. dearabby.com or p.o. box 69440, los angeles, ca 90069.
