after easter, get ready for a rockin’ april i
t’s been a weird month in the lowcountry: cold, blustery and wet weather combined with easter coming about as early as it possibly can. even the cooper river bridge run is still nine days away. with easter weekend focused on egg hunts, sunrise services and family, there’s not a whole lot of organized sports activities happening in the coming days. with winter’s grip loosening and easter sunday looking to be more spring-like, april is about to bust out with fun, sweaty stuff to do.
bridge run weekend
The biggest, not only in april but all year, comes on april 6 with the 36th annual cooper river bridge run and walk. you’ll read plenty about that in next week’s special section inside charleston scene, but, in a nutshell, the bridge run

The 41st year of the event will not only satisfy tennis enthusiasts, but also includes family-friendly events, new themed nights and a street party. “we’re about adding more value and entertainment for the consumer,” tournament director and general manager bob Moran said. last year, 87,972 people enjoyed the largest women’sonly tennis tournament, and Moran said ticket sales are already 10 percent to 12 percent ahead of last year. numbers were lower last year because one day was rained out. The nine-day event will kickoff at 3 p.m. saturday with the drawing ceremony on the grand lawn. players will have their names drawn to find out who they will compete against and will pose for pictures. finals are scheduled for april 7. ‘the host’
meyer’s movie goes beyond teen romance to survival of human race
by Mick lasalle San Francisco Chronicle
movie review
he host” is based on a stephenie Meyer novel, but don’t think of it that way. Meyer is the author of the “twilight” saga, but “The host” was adapted and directed by andrew niccol, who wrote “The truman show” and has written and directed a number of odd and interesting sci-fi fantasies, including “in time,” “s1m0ne” and “gattaca.” “The host” feels a lot like a niccol movie and nothing like “twilight,” despite a story involving another impossible teenage romance. neither romantic nor fake romantic, and not at all ridiculous, “The host” has an atmosphere that is cold, austere and sardonic. The main concern isn’t two kids and their emotional issues but human survival in a hostile and peculiar universe. niccol is like a grand scale, big-budget rod serling (“The twilight Zone”). That’s a good thing. as with serling, niccol’s quirky future visions are always tied to some social concern or some critical observation of life as it’s currently lived. in this scary future world, the earth has been invaded by aliens that have very little in the way of a physical body. They are, more or less, pure soul. They descend on a planet en masse. They prefer planets that are poorly run, where people are brutal and stupid and kill each other. and take possession of their bodies. The real person disappears, but the body remains. The only tell-tale sign that a change has taken place is in the eyes, which become weird. lots of strange contact lenses were

used during the making of this movie. The smart innovation of “The host” is that these alien beings are not malevolent. sure, they’re a threat to human existence, and they are roving interplanetary parasites, but the civilization they’re spreading is entirely benign. when people become possessed they become really, really nice: trusting, generous, and almost incapable of lying. “The host” begins at a point at which the aliens outnumber human beings by about a million to one, and the authorities are just doing cleanup operations. Melanie (saoirse ronan), a teenager, has become one of the possessed, but the human force is strong within her, and so she resists giving up information about her loved ones. This struggle within is dramatized by our hearing the internal conversation between Melanie and the host spirit, an ongoing dialogue that might have seemed corny or contrived but, in the hands of niccol, seems appropriately creepy. from avraham shalom, who ran shin bet from 1980 to 1986, to yuval diskin, who served as the secret service’s head from 2005 until 2011, these men, all from military backgrounds, speak about the futility of many of their programs, of the directives that came down from above. in some ways, “The gatekeepers” is like one long confession, a bureaucratic baring of the soul: the hard details of undercover operations, the airstrikes on suspected terrorist hideouts,

Moreh’s film takes one side, one point of view, the israeli one, and lets those in charge of carrying out policies designed to keep israel safe, no matter what, do some soul searching as they talk about the cost of such a tit-for-tat strategy. “it’s not as if they’re telling us something new. all

deep-seated frustrations. when prime Minister yitzhak rabin was assassinated by a Jewish extremist in 1995, it shook israel and the Middle east to the core. president bill clinton had orchestrated a historic accord between rabin and plo chairman yasser arafat, but after rabin’s death, the peace process and the self-govern-

These six men have stood on the front lines, but they also stand on the blurry lines of right and wrong, of moral doubt and self-doubt. if vigilance and pre-emption, recompense and retaliation are not enough, the film asks, then what is?

has initiated a screening of it in ramallah, and i would love to be there for that although i don’t know if i will be allowed to go. i want palestinians to see the film, to maybe understand their hated enemy as we finally try to understand them. That’s the greatest reward for me.”

the gathering cafe
w. ashley neighborhood restaurant antidote for fast food with fresh, local flavors by deidre schipani Special to The Post and Courier
more online
athan conkle, a culinary institute of charleston graduate, opened The gathering cafe last fall. it is a modest space in the orange grove plaza strip mall west of the ashley. unfortunately, the shopping center’s marquee advertises the dog & duck restaurant, which is closed. The gathering cafe, which is open, could certainly benefit from some roadside recognition. it joins its sam rittenberg boulevard neighbor, The original Ms. rose’s fine food and cocktails, in restoring homecooked meals to the neighborhood. conkle also has partnered with local farmers and growers as well as growfood carolina, limehouse produce and adluh grits to shine a light on local and seasonal ingredients. conkle learned and practiced his craft at Magnolias, The sanctuary at kiawah island and whole foods. he channels the river cottage in britain for his inspiration, and although there are no hedgerows or pastures surrounding his cafe, there is a simplicity and straight-forwardness to the cooking and service. The small dining room incorporates a short bar, fresh flowers, live plants, and a tranquil green and cream color palette. photos on the walls pay homage to the work of food. conkle has named his restaurant with the intention that it will live up to definition. and if we take the temperature of the health of our communities by virtue of their cafes, the vibrant ones are best served by large numbers of locally owned and operated neighborhood eateries. The gathering cafe serves lunch and dinner. sandwiches ($9) are available at lunch only. new to the menu are a variety of pastas with tuesdays offering half-off the price. The kitchen prepares daily soup, lunch and dinner specials. prices are modest and
portions are generous. we were among the majority leaving with leftovers. soups are ladled by the cup ($4) or bowl ($6) and are quite filling. a wedge of crispy grilled brie cheese sandwich accompanies the ubiquitous tomato soup, which is swirled with unctuous creme fraiche. The flavors are bright with the tomato’s acidity parsing the richness of the cheese. black bean and kale soup was the other option, and if the tomato soup is an indicator, the black bean is a winner, too. The gathering cafe sources its bread locally and serves it with a ramekin of seasoned olive oil for dipping. salads are entree size ($8.25), but our waiter quickly offered a half-portion option that we took. even at that, the leafy greens, beluga lentils, quinoa, radishes, grape tomatoes and avocado chunks with a lemon vinaigrette were a plate to be reckoned with. proteins can be added to any of the salads (chicken $4, salmon $7) that also included a Mediterranean chopped salad ($8.25) and kale caesar ($8.25). vegans and vegetarians will find a cornucopia of vegetables to choose from and budgetfriendly pricing: $2 apiece or four for $7. penang-style curry ($14) is coconut milk based and lush with carrots, potatoes, zucchini and mushrooms. top this Malaysian-inspired dish with tofu ($14), chicken ($15) or shrimp ($17). pastas ($14-$18) can be ordered as half-portions. They include turkey bolognese ($12) with gluten-free pasta or spaghetti; chicken with rigatoni; fusilli with pesto sauce; or malfadine with shrimp ($18). Malfadine are narrow lasagna-shaped noodles, a bit

The Gathering Cafe is at 1124 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. in West Ashley. thick with curled edges. This dish was billed as spicy but did not taste so robust. however, leftovers the next day answered with the heat of chiles. a roasted salmon ($15.95) entree was accompanied by lachinato kale, whose aggressive flavor was nicely tamed, and a side of ancient grains that combined sweet potatoes, farrow and apples into a delicious melange of earthy chewiness and a sweet finish. topped with a black olive tapenade and a sauce base of what tasted like the tomato soup, this was a dish of complex flavors that was carried off well by the kitchen. My only quibble was the salmon was overcooked. wine and beer are served,
with a modest craft and local beer menu and wines tailored to the entrees. expect to see the menu change with the seasons, especially the vegetable sides. desserts ($5) are outsourced and include a carrot cake, chocolate fondant cake and cheesecake. There also is a house-made bread pudding. The gathering cafe aims to please. conkle and his team are season- and ingredientfocused. shopping in the delicious pantry of the lowcountry arms them well in the local and cafe food genre. now all he needs to do is harvest customers in the neighborhood to gather together and further his efforts to eat local.

ike’s has freshness, cheap prices in its favor by rob young Special to The Post and Courier

ne of my favorite food trips from the past year was a visit to prince’s hot chicken shack in nashville, tenn., a recent recipient of the James beard foundation america’s classics award. any guess as to what the 60-plus-year-old institution serves? That’s right, fried chicken, in spice degrees ranging from mild to extra hot, the last of which features a fiery, molten-level intensity. generally, the wait time is an hour or so after ordering, the backdrop a modern-day shack set inside an older strip mall on the north side of the city. so just imagine my expectations during a visit to ike’s
if you go what: ike’s hot chicken, fish and more where: 616 meeting st. hours: 7 a.m.-until monday-saturday for more info: 805-5812 hot chicken, fish and More. which, honestly, is beyond unfair to ike’s. prince’s required decades to reach its stature; the recently opened ike’s needs more than just a few months. The restaurant makes its home near the hello My name is bbQ restaurant on Meeting street. you can’t miss ike’s. formerly craves soul food, the shop is painted in bright green and yellow. The offerings vary from, well, chicken to fish and more.

The fish means fried shrimp, scallops and deviled crab, as the “more” involves breakfast platters, wings and burgers, as well as ham and cheese, grilled cheese, and fish and pork chop sandwiches. as to the chicken, it’s good. The pieces are small, but the meat retains its juiciness, and the skin is crisp. it’s just not a game-changer, and it’s not hot in the same way as prince’s. The “hot” at ike’s just refers

when cable channel aMc introduced the original series “The walking dead” a couple of years ago, no one could have possibly predicted how popular it would be. sure, zombies were hot at the time, but the show, based on a popular graphic novel, will wrap up its third season this weekend and draws in millions of viewers each sunday night. to capitalize on the show’s rabid fan base, the producers have introduced everything

it seems as if most modern country songs have become ridiculously cliche. They either take one semi-clever phrase and spend the rest of the song saying “see what i did there?” or else they simply follow a set of blueprints laid down since the dawn of country. The result is almost maddening for someone looking for a little variety or originality in their music. i know what you’re saying; why are you listening to country if you want that? Thankfully, there are a handful of art-

when levon helm, the drummer and vocalist for the legendary rock outfit The band, passed away last april, it left a huge hole in the hearts of many, musicians and fans alike. at the grammy awards last month, helm received an all-star tribute as musicians including Mumford & sons, elton John and Mavis staples performed “The weight” at the ceremony. another tribute to helm was held in october in new Jersey. “love for levon,” a 2-dvd set, encap-
from video games to smartphone apps that let you turn a photo of yourself into a zombie. so it was inevitable that a soundtrack would come out at some point. “ t h e wa l k i n g d e a d o r i g i n a l soundtrack vol. 1” features eight songs used in or inspired by the series. strike one for the album is not including bear Mccreary’s haunting title theme music. instead, we get a remix of that by unkle. the omission of the original theme is unforgivable, and one wonders if they are saving it for a future volume. otherwise, there are some quality tunes on here. Jamie n commons’ haunting blues gui-
tar on “lead Me home” kicks things off, while voxhaul broadcast plods through “you are the wilderness.” baby bee rips it up on “love bug,” sounding like something Jack white might have produced. of Monsters and Men’s “sinking Man” is pretty, as is emily kinney’s “The parting glass,” a tune sung by two of the actresses in one episode. while the soundtrack makes for a nice souvenir for mega-fans of the show, the short length and the lack of enough good material hurts this collection.
ists that still take the challenge of writing a country song to be something original. take kacey Musgraves, whose debut album “same trailer different park” breaks all kinds of rules. with a voice that lies somewhere between natalie Maines and alison krauss, Musgraves could probably have done just fine writing an album of songs that followed that aforementioned blueprint. instead, she colored way outside the lines, resulting in a modern country album that is anything but normal. among the better tracks are a realistic song about finding positivity (“silver linings”), an even more realistic song about
small-town life (the ultra-catchy “Merry go round”), and a song about following your own path (“follow your arrow”) that mentions a same-sex kiss. This isn’t your mother’s country music. even without some potentially controversial lyrics, Musgraves has crafted a smart, funny and, at times, touching collection of songs that deal with real world issues. This isn’t just one of my favorite country albums so far this year, it’s one of my favorite albums in any genre.
sulates that monumental show, which featured performances from a dizzying array of stars. sure, tribute and relief concerts are a dime a dozen these days, but this show was organized by producer don was as a way to say goodbye to his friend in style, and the artists that showed up to play shows how far-reaching helm’s music was. it’s hard to say whether or not warren haynes performing “The shape i’m in” is better than Mavis staples’ incredible take on “Move along train.” is grace potter’s earth-shattering rendition of “i shall be released” better than Joe walsh and robert randolph tearing up “up on cripple creek?”
honestly, all of the musicians involved are great, and are all backed by the surviving members of helm’s band. John Mayer, eric church, ray laMontagne, lucinda williams, John prine, My Morning Jacket and roger waters are just a partial list of the amazing lineup. even if you aren’t a fan of helm or The band, you’ll likely find something amazing here.

‘live at the charleston music hall’ sam bush, edwin mccain to perform in historic theater for new tv pilot
by stratton lawrence Special to The Post and Courier

hen the doors of the charleston Music hall swing open at 7 p.m. saturday, Mark bryan hopes that history will be made. The night marks the culmination of years of ideas and planning for the first installment of “live at the charleston Music hall,” a double-header concert that will be filmed and edited into two 30-minute television program pilots. bryan, a member of hootie & the blowfish and a longtime charleston resident, has worked steadily on the project for more than four years, coordinating with the college of charleston’s video marketing programs and co-promoter rob lamble of ear for Music.
if you go
The inaugural event features two national headliners: grammy-winning bluegrass giant sam bush and pop star and s.c. native edwin Mccain. each act will perform a 75-minute set, from which four or five songs (along with an interview portion conducted with students from the intro to Sam Bush the Music industry class that bryan teaches at the c of c) will be whittled into the halfhour programs. “This building lends itself to creating really special moments between an artist and an audience,” said lamble, who in 1997 booked blues artist keb’Mo’ for the first show at the newly opened Music hall. “we’re inspired by this killer venue that’s sitting in our backyard and has been underutilized for so long, but also by this really rich and thriving musical landscape in the southeast that deserves some attention. we think we can really plant a flag in the ground on a national level for the music scene in our region.”
although the charleston Music hall at 37 John st. first opened as a theater just 16 years ago, its history predates the civil war. built in 1850 and originally named The tower depot, the gothic revival-style building served as the entrance to the south carolina railroad’s passenger depot. its three-story tower collapsed during the earthquake of 1886, after which the building became a manufacturing plant that made bags to transport and store cotton. That business went bankrupt during the great depression, and the building settled into a half-century of neglect before

live from page e20 being transformed into a theater in the mid-’90s, when Myrtle beach country music mogul calvin gilmore hosted a nightly grand ole opry-style theatrical production. The doors closed again after that short-lived program before the building’s owners, the locally based bennett hofford construction co., rebranded it the charleston Music hall in 1995. “i think the Music hall stands out in america, and not just in charleston, for how beautiful and majestic it is,” said sam bush, who last played the hall in 2008. “i think the time is good for what Mark (bryan) and rob (lamble) are trying to do. tv has gotten away from having shows where people really play music, so i’m excited about it.” bryan doesn’t hesitate when he compares the Music hall to legendary theaters like The orpheum in Memphis, tenn., fox Theatre in detroit and The apollo in harlem, n.y. “having toured with hootie in classic theaters like this all over the country, i can say that what we have here is special, and the building is older than any of the others,” bryan said, recalling his first experiences in the space: a concert by bluegrass musician david grisman and a frank sinatra tribute by hootie singer darius rocker. “Those shows showed me how brilliant the room is. it can manage a rock band or a very intimate acoustic act.” saturday’s performance is not the first time a concert has been recorded at the hall. in 2002, country legend ricky skaggs taped and released a live album from the venue that garnered a grammy nomination for best bluegrass album and won one for its track “a simple life.” but that’s just one of countless shows that stand out in the music hall’s collective history, from david byrne to ryan adams, taj Mahal, andrew bird and herbie hancock.
Building framework
it’s impossible to discuss filming a concert for tv without bringing up “austin city limits,” the public television program out of texas that helped earn austin its reputation as “The live Music capital of the world.”

Mark Bryan, a member of Hootie & the Blowfish, has worked more than four years on “Live at the Charleston Music Hall.” aired on saturday nights since 1976, the show has grown to include its own large-scale annual music festival while still maintaining the same weekly, intimate live format that it’s used for decades. “i remember my dad cuing it with the vcr,” said lamble. “ ‘austin city limits’ was an inspiration to me throughout my teen years, watching all the blues greats from albert collins to stevie ray vaughan to buddy guy to leo kottke. it’s such a diverse show.” bryan actually played the show with hootie, recalling the “high school gymnasium” feel of the set and the “low-key” atmosphere that calmed the band’s nerves despite performing for a national tv audience.
“(‘austin city limits’) is the holy grail of music tv shows, so of course, it’s an inspiration,” said bryan, who plans to differentiate “live at the charleston Music hall” from its predecessors through several elements, including the setting in a historic theater and the interview segment, conducted earlier in the day at the c of c. “That brings a unique touch to it and incorporates the college and the charleston scene as a whole.” when bryan first imagined the idea for the show, he formulated a plan with the late Johnny diamond, a celebrated local band manager who helped him envision how the pilot and tv aspects would work out. lamble soon came on board to help with the booking and pro-
moter duties of putting on the show, but bryan’s ongoing music career and the red tape of working out arrangements with the c of c and s.c. educational television pushed the project to the backburner month after month. in mid-2012, the Music hall emerged from several years of being underused when they hired charles carmody, a freshfaced recent graduate who has taken over as administrator of the venue and kept shows and events booked on an almost weekly basis since october. carmody grew up in Mount pleasant across the street from bryan and remembers his musical idol talking about the idea of a live concert program filmed at the hall. “i used to run over to Mark’s house and borrow his rock dvds. he’d hand me a hendrix film, and i’d go home and flip it in,” recalls carmody. “when i started at this job, i called him up and said, ‘hey, let’s do this.’ ” with a helping hand, a green light from within the venue, bryan went back to the college and recruited the school’s director of television and video production, tim fennell, as the head of a film crew, along with nearly 50 students involved in the production and advertising of the event, from creating promotional videos to serving as runners for the artists on the day of the show. once the pilots are ready to air, bryan said they plan to shop the
show to scetv and to channels like cable’s palladia. The hope is to get picked up for a series of eight to 10 programs, establishing “live at the charleston Music hall” as a recognizable highquality product. for carmody and fans of the Music hall, that would help create profits and guarantee that the building, located on prime downtown real estate, remains a performance space rather than being adapted to residential or other commercial use. “if we can get this place recognized, then the sky is the limit,” said carmody. “when bands play in this room, they realize how viable our city is. we’d like to get to the point where artists are saying, ‘hey, the charleston Music hall is hot stuff. we want to play there!’ ” to that end, bryan emphasizes that his purpose at this moment is not to think about the tv potential or future dvd sales, but to “host a killer show, right now.” “My head is not about what’s going to happen with it, but with making it happen,” he said. “at the end of the day, if we make a quality piece that we feel really good about, we’ll be able to get it out there.”
Good, honest music
looking ahead, bryan and lamble mention acts like lyle lovett, John hiatt and the local duo shovels & rope among their short list for upcoming episodes. with each live taping, they’ll put an emphasis on a pairing that compliments each other, often on a “local meets national” level. “i think this will be interesting for the audience because you’ve got two totally different kinds of bands playing. it makes it a fun night to have that diversity,” said bush, adding that he takes “great pride” in the possibility of the concert airing on public television. “public tv and radio don’t revolve around trends, so the people watching are generally just searching for good honest music.” That’s exactly what the team behind “live at the charleston Music hall” hopes to offer the audience on saturday, presented in a room that’s already among the southeast’s most renowned in sound quality and historic background. “we all know how cool and legendary the music hall is,” bryan said. “now it’s time to let everybody else know.”

ace’s on bridge By BOBBY WOLFF
Againstfourspades,Westleads the club queen, which holds the trick. West then thoughtfully continueswiththeclub10toyour ace. Everyone follows when you cash the trump ace. What now? At the table, after winning the club ace, one declarer drew two rounds of trump with the ace and king, discovering the 4-1 break. Next he played on diamonds, but Westhelduphisaceuntilthethird round, then exited with a trump to the dummy’s 10. The contract could no longer be made, since dummy had no more entries and West was poised to ruff a fourth round of diamonds. Declarerhadtotryaheart, hopingthatEastheldbothhonors, but it was not to be, and so declarer
could not avoid losing four tricks. The declarer at the second table showed better technique. The firsttwotrickswerethesame, but instead of drawing two rounds of trump, he cashed the trump ace, then played on diamonds. Like his counterpart, this West held up the ace until the third round, then exited with a trump, taken by dummy’s 10. Declarer now playedagooddiamondandthrew one of his heart losers. West could do no better than ruff and try a heart. Declarer took East’s queen with the ace and crossed to dummybyplayingatrumptothe king, drawing West’s last trump. He then cashed the fifth diamond to dispose of his remaining heart and claimed 10 tricks.

ear abby: as a law enforcement officer, i would like to comment on your reply to “overprotective Mom.” i agree with your solution to have the boy who wouldn’t wear his bike helmet because it was “uncool” visit a facility that treats people with traumatic brain injuries. however, you missed a golden opportunity to remind parents that they are the parents, and because they are responsible for their child’s safety, they are in charge. what has happened to plain old “parenting”? time and again, i see children make their own rules because the parents have shrugged off the responsibility of parenting. you should have told them to tell their child that if he won’t wear a helmet, his bike will be taken away until he does. — bill in bartlesville, okla. DEAR BILL: You and many readers are right. I did overlook the issue of parenting in my reply. Mea culpa. Read on: dear abby: have “overprotective Mom” ask her son if he thinks firefighters, fighter pilots, police officers and football players are “uncool.” They all wear helmets. — JaMes in hastings, neb. dear abby: not wearing a bike helmet to be “cool” is knuckling under to peer pressure. Those parents should use this opportunity to explain peer pressure and its consequences to their son. he needs to understand that he must make decisions for himself, and his “friends” should accept him for who he is. he needs to learn to stand his ground and be who he wants to be despite what others think of him. he also needs to learn to make decisions that affect his life based on facts and not follow the crowd. true friends most often will make the same sound decisions that he makes or accept his decision without pressuring him.

one other comment: require the kid to wear a helmet or forfeit the right to ride a bike. it’s called “tough love,” and although it is tough, it is also rewarding. More parents need to have sound, well-thought-out rules and stick to them. — parent first, friend second dear abby: patients cannot be used as exhibits, even with the best of intentions. it would be unethical and also illegal under hipaa laws. a better option would be to contact the injury prevention office at a local children’s hospital and ask for tips. if your readers don’t live near one, there are websites filled with helpful information. — laurie in dallas dear abby: it’s true that there is no state code law in texas regarding bicycle helmets, but many municipalities, including dallas, have ordinances that require riders to wear them. That mother should check her city code. — concerned in teXas dear abby: “overprotective” should let her son choose a “cool” helmet and be sure it’s fitted correctly. going to a bike shop may be the best bet. serious bikers are cool and will be supportive. The boy should select the style and color he wants and decorate it with hot stickers or whatever he wishes. if that doesn’t work, then take the bike away. it’s the kind of cause-and-effect discipline that really works. — barbara in ruMford, Maine dear abby is written by abigail van buren, also known as Jeanne phillips, and was founded by her mother, pauline phillips. write dear abby at www. dearabby.com or p.o. box 69440, los angeles, ca 90069.
