local cinco de mayo events abound this weekend
c
inco de Mayo has become yet another holiday celebrated more in the u.s. than in the country it originated. st. patrick’s day springs to mind as another example. according to history.com, May 5 is, for the most part, just another day in Mexico. it’s not a federal holiday, and offices, banks and stores remain open. There are celebrations, including military parades and re-enactments of the battle the day marks, but those events primarily take place in the state of puebla, where the battle occurred. (For more on the history, see head2head trivia on Page 35) in the united states, however, cinco de Mayo is widely interpreted as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. what started out as Mexicanamericans giving a nod to the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the battle of puebla has transformed into parades, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing, and traditional foods such as tacos and mole poblano. not that there’s anything wrong with that. obviously we just love an excuse to party. here’s a roundup of local events that commemorate cinco de Mayo.

‘iron man 3’ Gwyneth Paltrow returns as the super hero’s love interest, Pepper Potts
movie review (out of five stars) director: shane black cast: robert downey Jr., gwyneth Paltrow, ben kingsley, don cheadle, guy Pearce rated: Pg-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence throughout, and brief suggestive content running time: 2 hours, 10 minutes more photos: for more photographs from the film, check out the review on charleston scene.com.
Robert Downey Jr. plays Iron Man/Tony Stark in the third movie in the “Iron Man” franchise.
PhotograPhs by marvel/disney
Tony Stark’s a little winded but still able to show his mettle by roger Moore MCT
t
he third “iron Man” movie, the finale to this trilogy of Marvel marvels, is the jokiest and cutest of them all. iron Man/tony stark (robert downey Jr.) gets a kiddie sidekick, for pete’s sake. it’s also far and away the most violent, with a “die hard” body count, bombs and bullets, and stark trashtalking evil henchmen about how he’s going to kill them. writer-director shane black, who cut his teeth on “lethal weapon” movies and directed downey in one of his best pre-“iron Man” pictures, “kiss kiss, bang bang,” brings a more violent, angst-ridden sensibility to the franchise. and a less subtle one. “ever since that big dude with the hammer dropped out of the sky,” a character apologizes, remembering Thor’s arrival and “The avengers,” “subtlety’s kind of gone out the
window.” so there is not one iron Man this time, and not just two (the war Machine suit, worn by stark’s military pal played by don cheadle). no, as the trailers promise, there are many suits that can be summoned, videogame fashion, in midfight, midflight. That sort of deus ex machina robs the film of some of its high-stakes urgency. a new terrorist foe — “i prefer
the term ‘teacher’ ” — is assaulting america. The Mandarin (ben kinglsey, big and broad), who isn’t chinese, is threatening the president (william sadler), the country and iron Man. and when the bad guy’s minions take down tony stark’s bodyguard (Jon Favreau, who also directed the first two “iron Man” movies), tony vows “good old-fashioned revenge.” That’s when tony’s Fortress of
Malibu is destroyed. That’s when tony’s beloved pepper potts (gwyneth paltrow) is endangered. (These aren’t spoilers, folks. it’s all in the trailer.) This “iron Man” is about the “demons” we create through the people we wrong, and black (who co-wrote the script) frames all this within a tony flashback, to the day he scored a one-night-stand with a scientist (rebecca hall) and stiffed a thinktank founder (guy pearce). downey is as on the money as ever as stark, punching up pithy punchlines. “bill me” to a bloodthirsty reporter who eggs him into trashing the guy’s cell phone. stark criss-crosses the country, from tennessee to Miami, and suffers anxiety attacks along the way. a kid (ty simpkins of “insidious”) with a disney channel haircut to make up for his hard-luck life in tennessee pitches in to help. a pushy, inquisitive child and these
red-eyed minions of evil whose wounds heal in an instant would give anybody heart palpitations. The third-act twists are pretty easy to see coming, and the action beats feel preordained. but one bit of business involving people sucked out of air Force one is the film’s jawdropper, a stunt/effect that is as epic as anything this genre has produced. and the broad, goofy jokes and one-liners land, even if they feel a little winded this time. examining downey in close-up, you can fret that he’s aging through his best years in an action franchise that doesn’t tax him the way movies like “The singing detective” and “kiss kiss, bang bang” once did. but he helped make comic book pictures safe for great actors. and if he pops up as the face in the suit in an “avengers” movie or two, i don’t think anybody would begrudge him that. The suit has fit him, and he has filled the suit to perfection.

‘to the wonder’ by a.o. scott New York Times News Service
movie review
n terrence Malick’s films, it usually is possible to discern, beneath the blossoms of metaphor and the philosophical foliage, the trellis of a more or less conventional plot. “The Thin red line” is a combat picture. “The tree of life” is a nostalgic coming-of-age story. and “to the wonder,” Malick’s latest, is a romantic melodrama whose major characters fall tragically and beautifully in and out of love. Their narrative proceeds in a straight line and is easy enough to follow. in France, an oklahoman named neil (ben affleck) meets Marina (olga kurylenko), a ukrainian expatriate with a 10-year-old daughter, tatiana (tatiana chiline). we first encounter neil and Marina in the bliss of early infatuation and in endlessly picturesque (if also somewhat familiar) settings. paris is a wonderland for cinematographers, and emmanuel lubezki, Malick’s director of photography (who also shot “The tree of life” and “The new world”), revels in the city’s limestone buildings, cobbled streets and classical symmetries of its gardens. a trip west to Mont saint-Michel is like a visit to heaven itself, as the spires and buttresses of the cathedral and the tidal flats that surround it are rendered in one glorious

Malick is committed, as a matter of quasi-religious principle and aesthetic temperament, to finding beauty everywhere. when Marina and tatiana follow neil back to oklahoma, “to the wonder” spins visual poetry not only out of prairies and creek beds but also out of less obviously sublime facts of the landscape, like suburban subdivisions, concrete parking structures and supermarkets. nothing drab, ugly or ordinary can exist in this world. all the same, Marina, who occupies herself running through fields in golden sunlight, finds rapture hard to sustain. her malaise is mirrored by the struggle of a priest (Javier bardem) to hold on to his faith.

Ben Affleck and Olga Kurylenko in “To the Wonder.” Marina and her daughter return to France, and neil takes up with Jane (rachel Mcadams), a rancher he knew in childhood. The man pursued by two emphatically contrasted women — brunette and blonde, exotic and domestic, impetuous and practical — is an ancient literary archetype, which may be a polite way of saying a cliche. neil seems to be decent, moody and, above all, indecisive. at one point, the priest reflects on the sinfulness of refusing to make a choice, and while
he is condemning himself, neil is implicated as well, since he cannot fully devote himself to either of the women who adore him. women in Malick’s films tend to love intuitively and completely, if not always happily, while men equivocate and brood, occasionally erupting in anger or frustration. but “to the wonder” is no more concerned with the psychology of heterosexual relationships than it is with standard dramatized action. as usual, Malick minimizes dialogue, preferring to com-
Malick takes theology seriously and tries to give its impulses a visual form. his camera, swinging upward from earth to sky, traces a path from the sensual to the spiritual, and his men and women are blessed and cursed to inhabit both realms at once. in “The tree of life” he managed to endow the details of individual lives with genuine awe and afford even skeptics a view of existence from the perspective of eternity. “to the wonder” gestures toward the same kind of transcendence but falls short. This is partly because the human situation in the center of the film does not quite support its philosophical scaffolding and partly because the images do not in themselves possess the magnolia Pictures evocative power Malick intends them to have. images of neil’s work sammunicate ideas and emotions pling soil and water at industhrough voice-over, montage trial sites and of poor and and music. pot kettle black food truck serves up flavor on the go by rob young Special to The Post and Courier
t
he “wayward bistro” mantra designated to the food truck pot kettle black makes for cute copy. true, pkb’s travels may be unpredictable, but the food is far from indiscriminate. The southern-inspired sandwich board deals deeply in pork, fried green tomatoes and creativity. Find pot kettle black out and about at food truck rodeos, business complexes during the week and at all points in between. check www.pkbfoodtruck. com or call 817-Food (yes, that’s a real number — a real awesome number) for an updated calendar. chef Jon caton and his wife, laura carone, started the food truck in april 2011, helping pave the way for a mobile federation that now probably includes more than 20-plus entries. pot kettle black rides high among the bunch, secured to a frame featuring sandwiches with titles like the spider pig blt ($9) and the bodacious hamacious ($8). That’s a lot of flavor just in the names. by melding fried green tomatoes, pimiento cheese and bacon, the spider pig achieves a tasty, crunchy mix of tartness and saltiness. grilled sourdough bread provides the foundation, capably sustaining the classic character of the sandwich. Then there’s the bodacious hamacious, which translates roughly to “oh, my goodness, i must have several more of your fine sandwiches prior to the conclusion of the fortnight.” Thinly sliced portions of cooked capicola ham and roasted garlic give the sandwich its signature spiciness. Melted provolone cheese and the kaiser roll add a soft, finishing touch.

snoop lion

B
There was, understandably, a lot of skepticism when rapper snoop dogg announced after a trip to Jamaica that he would from then on be addressed at snoop lion and be recording a reggae album. The album is done, and for the first release from an artist who decided to switch music genres 20 years into his career, it’s surprisingly good.

if you’re under 35 and aren’t familiar with the name edie brickell, then you can be forgiven. For those of us old enough to remember, brickell hit it big back in the ’80s with her band, the new bohemians, and the hit single “what i am.” after marrying paul simon in 1992, she settled into family life, but she still has found time to release music as a solo artist and with the new bohemians. now brickell has collaborated with the most unlikely of partners: comedian, actor

The French band phoenix has been together more than 15 years, but it wasn’t until the release of its 2009 album, “wolfgang amadeus phoenix,” that it was vaulted into the stratosphere of music stardom. That album, which included hits such as “1901” and “lisztomania,” marked a change in musical style from the band’s earlier releases. The writing was looser and lighter and the songs more melodic and poplike. on the recently released follow-up,
beginning with “rebel way” and continuing through 11 more tracks, snoop unleashes an impressive collection of songs and welcomes a variety of guest artists. angela hunte provides some great backing vocals to “here comes the king,” while akon backs snoop on “tired of running.” Quite possibly the most unusual pairing comes with “ashtrays and heartbreaks,” which features Miley cyrus on backing vocals. as much as i hate to admit it, the former
Miss hannah Montana actually adds something positive to the tune with a strong set of pipes. The mix of traditional and dancehall reggae styles isn’t likely to revolutionize the genre, but snoop lion should be commended for not only sticking to his promise but also delivering an above-average collection of songs.
and musician steve Martin. Martin himself has been on quite the musical kick the past few years, releasing a couple of well-received banjo albums. listening to “when you get to asheville,” the opening track of the pair’s “love has come for you,” it’s like rediscovering an old friend. brickell’s voice is in fine form a quartercentury after her debut, and the texas-born singer definitely has the vocal chops for the bluegrass and folk songs that make up the new release. Martin, who has played the banjo since he was a teen, plays the instrument beautifully, and at no time does he try to overpower brickell’s voice. instead, voice and banjo co-exist beauti-
fully on songs such as “Friend of Mine,” “sarah Jane and the iron Mountain baby” and “sun’s gonna shine.” legendary musician peter asher produced the album, and guest artists include esperanza spalding, waddy wachtel, nickel creek alumni sara and sean watkins, and steep canyon rangers. it’s a superb collection of original songs, and you’ll be able to check out the music live May 27 at the north charleston performing arts center, when steve Martin & steep canyon rangers featuring edie brickell perform.
“bankrupt!” it seems that phoenix has taken that lighter style of songwriting to heart. The leadoff track, “entertainment,” sounds like it belongs smack dab in the middle of the 1980s new wave barrage with its cheery synths and lead singer Thomas Mars’ even cheerier vocals. indeed, it would appear that the band spent time listening to the masters of ’80s new romantic movement bands, such as spandau ballet, human league, and adam and The ants, while recording “bankrupt!” ultra-catchy tunes abound here, including “s.o.s. in bel air,” “drakkar noir” and
key tracks: “rebel way,” “here comes the king,” “ashtrays and heartbreaks”
key tracks: “when you get to asheville,” “sarah Jane and the iron mountain baby,” “who you gonna take?”
especially the slow and deliberate “chloroform,” which sounds like something that duran duran and yazoo might have collaborated on in 1983. despite the numerous comparisons here, it should be noted that phoenix has created an album that is even more original and fun to listen to than “wolfgang amadeus phoenix.” key tracks: “entertainment,” “s.o.s. in bel air,” “chloroform” — by devin grant

rain” and “pellets of poison” weren’t nuclear fallout, but “the lies that people get told on their radios and in their newspapers.” The media’s, and listeners’, tendency to reinterpret a song’s meaning and apply it to society followed dylan throughout his career; as a poet, he found thematic connections between words and phrases that could be con-
strued to whatever issue might be at the forefront of national news at the moment. “words have their own meaning, or they have different meanings, and words change their meaning,” dylan said in scorsese’s film. “words that meant something 10 years ago don’t mean that now. They mean something else.” after 52 years of perform-
ing, dylan’s words have had countless chances to change their meaning. There is arguably no songwriter more prolific or influential in modern music. he’s a man so complex that when another filmmaker, todd haynes, decided to base a fictional film around his life (2007’s “i’m not There”), he used six actors (one actually please see dylan, page e21

dylan from page e20 an actress) to portray different aspects of the singer’s personality. dylan brought poetic lyrics to rock music, and he brought electric guitars and drums to folk music. he polarized his audiences when he plugged in his guitar and again when he morphed into a born-again christian gospel singer in the late ’70s. but the audience never went away. in 2012, dylan released “tempest,” his 35th studio album, featuring the title track about the sinking of the titanic that clocks in just shy of 14 minutes. “rolling stone” gave the album five stars. This spring, dylan, now 71, set out on the latest leg of his “never ending tour” with a band that includes legendary blues guitarist duke robillard. Fans who have seen dylan perform in the past decade may be pleased to hear that many of his classics have re-emerged throughout the 25th anniversary tour, including “ballad of a Thin Man,” “tangled up in blue,” “visions of Johanna” and “all along the watchtower.” This saturday, he’ll perform at Family circle Magazine stadium on daniel island with special guest dawes.
Ongoing inspiration
bob dylan secured his reputation as a great folk singer with his second album, 1963’s “The Freewheelin’ bob dylan,” and began to reinvent what folk could be two years later with the release of the electrified song “like a rolling stone” and the album “bringing it all back home.” never one to pander to reporters asking simplistic questions, dylan often stated that what mattered to him was only what he was doing in the present time. when an english fan screamed “Judas!” at dylan in 1966, he balked, called the fan a liar from stage, and told his band to “play it (expletive) loud.” identifying with “folk music,” as a definition, still can be a struggle for musicians today. dawes, the los angeles-based quartet that is touring with dylan, fit the “folk” bill on a lyrical level, but its cohesive energy puts as much focus on musical song

songwriting accomplishments. The 2011 album “nothing is wrong” closes with the song “a little bit of everything,” which flows from suicide to old age and reflective regret to the underlying love behind the difficult relationship balance of planning a wedding. it’s a song that qualifies as poetry and certainly makes your hair stand on end. “i was nervous about that song,” goldsmith said of the writing process. “i wasn’t sure if it was too direct, and i worried, ‘is this going to be too obvious or too earnest, or just too much?’ i’ve never had that feeling of, ‘yeah, i really nailed it,’ with a song.”
on tour with dylan, it’s dawes’ “a little bit of everything” that seems to attract the most familiar response from the audience. although that may quickly change since the april release of its third album, “stories don’t end,” featuring songs like the rolling “From a window seat” and the building “Most people,” with its instantly grasping intro-hook. but even with catchy songs, goldsmith emphasizes that dawes’ goal isn’t to explode into popular consciousness overnight. “if we just wanted to be entertaining, we would make it more about the energy level and make our songs ‘dancey’ and ‘hooky’ and easier to sing to, which a lot of our songs aren’t,” goldsmith said. “when i see pictures of singers standing on a drum and pointing a drum stick out to the audience, and the crowd is reaching back out to them and they’re shouting something at each other, that’s really exciting, but i know within myself that it’s not who i am, so if i’m going to be honest with the audience and myself, then i’m not going to be doing that stuff.” at the peak of dylan’s trajectory to fame, in the summer of 1966, he crashed his
motorcycle and immediately disappeared from the limelight. he didn’t tour again for eight years. because no ambulance was called and dylan was not hospitalized, some have speculated that dylan faked the injury to escape the hectic reality his life had become. contemporaries of dawes, such as Mumford & sons, have experienced similar meteoric rises in recent years, and goldsmith hopes to avoid the pitfalls and pressure that can come with it. “we’re always open and prepared for the best, but expecting the worst,” he said. “i don’t really know if our songs are the kind of music that are going to catapult any band. obviously, we want to have a fun and stable career, and play in front of as many people as we can, but what matters most is just playing the music that we want to make. when the dust settles on this third record, hopefully dawes will be a couple of notches higher, but still building things.”
The power of a song
when bob dylan wrote songs like “Masters of war,” a direct response to president dwight d. eisenhower’s acknowledgement of the grow-
ing “military-industrial complex” in 1961, or “The times They are a-changin,” the songs were met by an audience that was increasingly receptive to the message. global society had never before faced such grave possibilities (nuclear war), and popular music had not overlapped with politics so directly. after a half-century of stalemate wars and cyclical history, music may have lost the power that dylan first gave it. “i feel like there’s a deeply set cynicism that goes with your everyday younger person living in the here and now,” said goldsmith. “if you were to sing them ‘Masters of war’ and it was a brandnew song, i don’t know if in today’s climate it would be received in the way it should be, or in the way it was when bob dylan first wrote it. people then were more open and a little more willing to believe in the power of something.” That doesn’t mean that goldsmith avoids addressing the world situation, but he does so with care. The song “when My time comes” from dawes’ 2009 debut, “north hills,” found receptive ears when the band performed it with Jackson browne for the occupy movement gathered in new york in 2011, but like “a hard rain,” it was written before the issue it came to symbolize even existed. “The song was able to resonate in a way that people could find pride in,” said goldsmith. “if we had written a song where we started to talk about occupy within the lyrics, i think that people would have said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’ people today are hyper-aware of what’s realistic, so you don’t want to write an irresponsibly hopeful song, in terms of, ‘here’s how we can ... change things.’ ” when you’re dylan, however, the rules may be different, even in 2013. Fans who remember identifying with the singer’s statements half a century ago now mingle with those who first heard “a hard rain” decades after it was released. “his songs still resonate,” goldsmith said. “i think people are still willing to look back on his older material with their eyes open, like they were back then.”

ace’s on bridge By BOBBY WOLFF
Today’s deal comes from a head-to-head match, where both declarers faced the identical lead in their game contract of four spades, after West had produced a vulnerable two-level overcall. The unsuccessful declarer thought he saw the danger of this hand coming from the possibility that the defenders might get diamond ruffs — and he was right, but not in the way he had predicted. He imagined he was playing safely by rising with the diamond ace to protect against West’s havingasingleton.Hediscoveredhis mistake when East ruffed away thediamondaceandledaheartto his partner, cashed the diamond king, and gave East a second diamond ruff, for down one.
The second declarer knew that West was a heavy favorite to hold the heart ace, so he was not worried about East’s giving his partner two diamond ruffs. So he put in the diamond jack at the first trick. This turned out to be equally disastrous when East ruffed, crossed to the heart ace, and saw West play back the diamondking.Dummyhadtocover, and East ruffed again, leaving West with the diamond 10-8 and a sure diamond winner. Down one again! Declarer could have virtually ensured his contract by playing low from dummy at trick one. All he is relying on is that West has the heart ace. If that is so, then no matter how the diamonds lie, the defenders can take only three tricks.

dear abby
Your husband doesn’t trust you because you haven’t been trustworthy. But taking away your phone and Internet and keeping you under lock and key will not help you to rebuild it. You two need more help than anyone can give you in a letter, and I hope you will seek it. If he won’t go for counseling, you should go without him because I don’t think the status quo can last. dear abby: My sister and brother-in-law passed away two years ago. i am the only living relative of their 28-yearold son, “louis.” he is a loner, spoiled and a poor houseguest. i invite louis over only because i don’t want him to be alone at holiday times. My husband, teenage daughter and i have nothing in common with him, and frankly, he spoils our holidays. how can i stop inviting my nephew without feeling guilty? or is there another solution? i hate to make waves. — holiday hater in canada DEAR HOLIDAY HATER: If you invite your nephew for fewer holidays, you will be able to ease your conscience, enjoy more holidays and allow the young man a chance to become more proactive in planning entertainment for himself. dear abby: i may be wrong, but isn’t it presumptuous for someone to open the message card on a flower delivery before you get home when the flowers are for you? — kiMberly in Maryland DEAR KIMBERLY: You’re not wrong. The person opening the cards isn’t being helpful, but nosy. And it wouldn’t be out of line to tell the person not to do it again. www.dearabby.com.
