istorically, november is the busiest month for runners in charleston, rivaled only by March, and this has been the busiest weekend. despite the fact that the folly Beach 10 Miler isn’t being held for the first time in five years, the area is hosting four races in different locations on this veterans day weekend. and the headliner features a salute to veterans. The second annual run and walk for the yorktown 5k will start at 8 a.m. Saturday at patriots point with the national anthem sung by past “american idol” contestant and air force capt. lyndsey goodman, a flyover and aerial display of an at-6 texan warbird plane, and a starting blast from a world war ii-era howitzer. The race begins behind the yorktown parking lot, goes out the back entrance, turns down patriots point Boule-
vard, continuing to harry hallman Boulevard, down into waterfront park to the turnaround, then returns on the same route, with the finish line on the pier running toward the yorktown. The race will conclude with a party on the ship with a band, followed by the awards ceremony. But then Banks, as Jeff’s wife, doesn’t get nearly enough to do, which makes a climactic reveal from her seem to come from nowhere. and then there’s ray liotta as washington’s husband. he initially seems like a bit of an idiotic lug, but ends up having one standout scene as the cuckolded husband who explains to Jeff in an extended monologue what it means to be a man. The straightforward way in which he cuts to the core suggests the better (and more honest) movie that might have been in here.

‘skyfall’ gets bond back to basics By roger Moore MCT

kyfall” is far and away the best and the most British of the daniel craig-James Bond movies. director Sam Mendes (“road to perdition”) gets Bond back to the basics: bullets, babes, big-time bad guys and bawdy humor. and the result is an entertaining romp, an old (spy) school Bond film that reins in the more violent and germanic Bond of Marc forster’s “Quantum of Solace.” in the film’s opening gambit, Bond bites the bullet. he’s accidentally shot while wrestling with a generic villain on the roof of a train speeding through turkey. Since he’s chased this guy by car and motorbike through the crowded bazaars and narrow streets of istanbul (and settings from “taken 2”), spy chief M (Judi dench) is willing to risk the marksmanship of a fellow agent, played with a pizazz by naomie harris, bestknown as the sexy witch of the “pirates of the caribbean” movies. what Bond was trying to nab was a computer hard drive with a “list” on it. Some supervillain with wikileaks tendencies wants to expose spies.

Bond getting “killed” means that he’s failed. and that M has failed, too. The fallout for 007 is an obituary. for M, it’s a political raking over the coals, where she’s called an “old fashioned” relic of a bygone era, “the golden age of espionage.” “we can’t keep living in the shadows,” her new boss, the intelligence minister (ralph fiennes), tells her. “There are no more shadows.” we, of course, know better. when Mi6 is hacked and bombed, Bond comes back from his babe-and-beers and drinking games (very indiana Jones) to save the day.
Judi Dench stars in “Skyfall.” except he’s gotten old. he’s lost a step. and he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with a walther ppk. no matter, M won’t have anybody else. The biggest problem with the first two craig Bonds, both films of which were huge hits, was the villains. This time, oscar winner Javier Bardem shows up as a murderous hacker with a Julian assange blond mop top. and he brings the pain — and the homoerotic undertones (ok, overtones). The writing — three screenwriters pitched in — is jokier, crisper. The “Bond girl” is played by the ultraexotic Berenice Marlohe. and there’s a new quartermaster, “Q,” played by
Daniel Craig as James Bond in “Skyfall.” waif-thin Ben whishaw in a radical reinterpretation of a witty role that has been beloved by fans of the series for nearly 50 years. “were you expecting an exploding pen? we don’t really go in for that anymore.” yes, this marks 50 years of James Bond films, and Mendes & co. use the film as an excuse to joke about age and trot out old props and older actors (dench and

albert finney). Mendes gets that the familiar ingredients are what have made this series, and that “reinventing” Bond was never necessary. he just needed a new suit. The finale is straight out of John wayne’s “rio Bravo,” and the violent set pieces — ranging from Shanghai and Macao to parliament and the bunkers of london — are blandly predictable.
But that’s kind of the point here. This is action comfort food, from the brand of gun and martini recipe to the quips and coital interludes. it’s all good, clean, British fun. “Skyfall” — the title’s a tease to a third-act surprise — ensures continuity in that comfort food: that as long as there’s a Britain, there will be a “Bond, James Bond” to look after its interests.

B
oth as a spy and a filmseries brand, James Bond is invincible. The franchise, celebrating its 50th anniversary with this week’s u.S. release of “Skyfall,” is the longest-lived in movie history. adjusting for inflation, it’s also the most lucrative. The Bond formula of exotic locales, exquisite women, elegant tailoring and extreme danger spawned scads of imitators, but outlasted them all through sheer evolutionary agility. The films regained their youth and topicality with each new leading man, from “dr. no’s” echoes of the cuban missile crisis to “Skyfall’s” cyber-terrorism. That potent cocktail of old and new enables Bond to span a multitude of periods, locales and adversaries. Jason Bourne, John Mcclane or ethan hunt could never fit as smoothly in 1962 Jamaica and 2012 Shanghai. Bond’s wide appeal began with ian fleming’s cold war spy novels, which cast his hero as a lethal mix of British gentleman and blunt instrument. cary grant was approached to take the role. fleming was displeased when Sean connery was cast, calling him “an overdeveloped stunt man.” But as audiences embraced connery, the novelist was won over. in later books, fleming even gave 007 a partly Scots ancestry. in the years since, Bond has matured from a gadgetequipped action figure to a three-dimensional character. M has morphed from Bernard lee to Judi dench. The more times change, the more the iconic spy endures. Though his monomaniacal

Best Bond: Sean connery and daniel craig. Six actors have played ian fleming’s lethal spy in the eon productions films. The best? it’s a tie between the man who launched the series and the man who rescued it. Sean connery and daniel craig capture Bond’s ruthless cruelty and cold charisma. each knows that even an iconic role calls for some actual acting, and when the scene calls for it they get deep in the game. and both men have a potent physical presence. They look as if they could flatten an adversary without help from one of Q’s chloroform-emitting fountain pens. fate dealt each actor an advantage in this sweepstakes. connery established the Bond brand, setting the competitive bar high for those following him. george lazenby was more athletic, timothy dalton brought a classical actor’s dour focus to the part, pierce Brosnan had the best feel for devil-may-
care humor. But they just weren’t connery. craig’s casting ignited a firestorm of controversy (a blond Bond? unthinkable!), but his brooding, muscular portrayal proved his critics wrong. his debut, the ambitious series reboot “casino royale,” introduced a stripped-down, modern, more thoughtful style to the franchise. craig plays a spy who feels remorse when colleagues die, who sometimes blinks before he pulls the trigger, and struggles with his violent impulses. he’s a Bond who can deliver a crisp right cross, and a bruising emotional wallop. and he doesn’t care if his martini is shaken or stirred. Worst Bond: roger Moore roger Moore is the longestrunning 007 to date, and the least suited to the role. More lounge lizard than cobra, incompetent in action scenes, Moore faced lightweight, forgettable villains, shifting the films’ tone from drama with a dash of irony to selfmockery. hard to decide if Moore’s lowest point was donning a clown disguise in “octopussy” or his drowsy, austin powers-quality sexytime with grace Jones in “a view to a kill.”

The ultimate tricked-out ride. accessories include rotating license plates, machine guns behind lowering headlights and passenger ejector seat. The dashboard mapping device predicted modern gpS systems, its rotating tire-slashers inspired the craze for spinny hubcaps, and its ability to lay down a trail of oil and smoke predated the yugo by 20 years. There’s the missile-firing boombox from “The living daylights” (“a ghetto blaster,” Q explains). The invisible car from “die another day.” The gondola/hovercraft in “Moonraker” that elicits a double-take from a nearby pigeon. But nothing tops the croco-boat Bond uses to infiltrate kamal khan’s palace in “octopussy.” Because if you want to escape notice, the best way is to motor up in an inert reptile.

logan, co-owners of outta My huevos. They’ve been in business for about three months, so Masingill said they hope Saturday’s rodeo earns them some exposure. The truck mostly serves brunch favorites such as waffles, biscuits and breakfast burritos, but Masingill said they also feature a few lunch options including hamburgers and Blt’s. “we wanted to make it all fresh, homemade food,” Masingill said. “we make everything ourselves, down to the english muffins or the chorizo for the breakfast burritos.” Masingill and logan met at Mccrady’s where they serve tables. The food truck is a first stab at entrepreneurship for both of them. “we’ve picked up some things working in a restaurant and seeing how it all works,” Masingill said. “we decided that we were ready to do our own thing and start our own business. we

‘let’s start a food truck.’ ” a main component of their business plan is to include as many local ingredients in their food as possible. Masingill’s favorite menu item is the veggie wrap, which contains goat cheese from Split creek farms, veggies from ambrose farms and eggs from chickens raised by locals celeste and John albers. “we have really great local products with all the flourishing farms around town,
so why not take advantage of that?” Masingill said. The dulce truck, owned and operated by ericka kalinowski, also likes to showcase charleston products. in addition to her homemade gourmet deserts, kalinowski serves tea from the charleston tea plantation. “in keeping with my theme to use local ingredients whenever i can, i decided to do sweet tea since charleston is home to america’s only (working) tea plantation,” she said.
kalinowski likes to feature inventive teas on her menu, such as blueberry basil tea and lemon lavender tea. as for her desert, kalinowski said she recommends her vanilla bean cheesecake, which is topped with a bacon caramel sauce, chocolate sauce or an orange cranberry sauce. She’ll also feature a seasonal pumpkin pie, a six-layer coconut cake, chocolate mousse and other gourmet baked goods on Saturday’s menu.
“i’m just excited to get people to taste my deserts,” she said. “i can’t wait to see their reactions.” The food truck rodeo is an opportune time to get acquainted with charleston’s food trucks, but that’s not all there is to enjoy about the event. four local bands will perform throughout the day, so guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and stick around. Just like the food at the event, the music will include something for everyone. eddie Bush and The Mayhem will perform Southern rock and country originals, old you will play their special brand of blues rock, tidal Jive will perform groovy funk and the Jefferson coker Band will play their blend of americana and folk-rock. Beer and wine will be available during the event, but guests are asked to leave coolers at home. The food truck rodeo is a family-friendly event, and pets on leashes are welcome.

combination of heading up one of the most successful american bands, a successful solo career during a lengthy “temporary” hiatus of that band and a notable acting career could have led glenn frey to take it easy. instead, The eagles re-reunited in 2007 and released the charttopping double album “long road out of eden,” and frey plays the new kid in town with his recently released dynamic collection of standards titled “after hours.” frey related a desire to record an album like this for the past 20 years, but The eagles, raising a family and other matters delayed the project. now with more time, the most altruistic reason drove frey: both of his parents are still living. “My father is 91 and my mother is 88. i wanted to finish the record while they are still around and for them to enjoy for a long time to come. This is the music they listened to when they were growing up,” frey said. frey said he listens to the style of music he chose for the album a lot, as it is a nice diversion from what he typically plays. he was familiar with many songs of the era. neil young & crazy horse Psychedelic Pill/Reprise

“dreamin’ about the way things sound now, write them down in my book.” So says neil young on “driftin’ Back,” the nearly 28-minute long opening track on “psychedelic pill.” it’s a pretty mellow beginning, especially for a band with as rowdy a reputation as crazy horse. Still, it’s neil young at his best. and when the second song, the album’s title track, kicks in, we get the crazy horse we’ve grown to love through songs such as
“hey hey, My My (into The Black)” and “powderfinger.” young and his band aren’t getting any younger, but instead of going gently into their winter years, neil young & crazy horse are building a snow fort and digging in via their music. The loose, guitar-heavy songs on the album range from country stomps such as “Born in ontario” and “twisted road” to all-out rockers such as “She’s always dancing” and “walk like a giant.”
with the many power pop bands currently out doing their respective things in the music world, one might think that the musical style would be easy to master. nope. for every cheap trick, Big Star and The Smithereens, there are two dozen other bands that try but never quite achieve the true power pop sound. nine times Blue is one band that gets it right. The infectious pop hooks and catchy lyrics on “falling Slowly” show that these
guys have done their homework, and that they are the real thing. The leadoff title track is reminiscent of The gin Blossoms with its bouncy rhythm. “i can’t See you” finds lead singer kirk waldrop channeling The Smithereens’ pat dinizio, while the lovely “Serena” sounds like what might happen if crosby, Stills & nash teamed up with dinizio and his boys for a song. “fun and games” just might be the best elvis
when i heard australian musician claude hay’s album “deep fried Satisfied” a couple of years ago, i was immediately impressed. That admiration grew when i learned that the songwriter not only put on one-man shows by way of loop pedals, but also built his own instruments. even if the potential novelty of those additional abilities doesn’t matter to you, once you get an earful of hay’s electric blues and roots music, you’ll be hard
pressed to find anything negative to say. employing elements of led Zeppelin, aerosmith and taj Mahal, hay actually improves upon the goodness that was “deep fried Satisfied” with his new album, “i love hate you.” The raw title track sets the mood for the album nicely, while tracks such as “Stone face,” “narrow Mind” and “don’t Bring Me down” demonstrate hay’s incredible ear for a great blues riff. a cover of The Beatles’

wo million light bulbs — that’s where the holiday festival of lights organizers lost count in their tally of the glowing orbs of cheer that decorate James island county park for two months each winter. “two million and one!” corrects Jim Murray, a volunteer at the park since the mid-’90s. Three nights a week during the festival, Murray dons the costume of wattson the giant red light Bulb, greeting children as they explore the winter wonderland and Santa’s village. “The best case scenario is that they grab my hand and say, ‘i love you and i want to take you home,’ ” laughs Murray. “The worst case is that they scream and run away. But really, it’s a hoot.” on a recent evening, Murray
was one of a few dozen volunteers stringing strands of lights over bushes and trees along the threemile driving route that now features over 750 shining displays. among the other volunteers are dave Striebich and Beth Brannan, a St. petersburg Beach, fla., couple in their third year as members of the campground host club. fourteen couples spend nearly three months at the park beginning oct. 1, collectively volunteering more than 4,100 hours in exchange for an rv campsite and a universal pass to charleston’s museums, plantations and attractions. “we meet some great people and have a lot of fun together,” Striebich said of the experience. “our job for five weeks is screwing and unscrewing, swapping out light bulbs on the displays.” in the month leading up to the festival’s opening weekend, around 200,000 faded and worn-out bulbs

flag. once a new design is determined, raab transfers a line drawing to a computer and projects it onto the floor of his workshop, where he traces the outline in chalk. he and his team then bend, cut and weld rebar into the design’s shape before affixing the appropriate colored lights to the structure. it takes between six and 10 weeks to create a new display. holiday is a term used loosely when it comes to the displays’ subject matter. driving the slow loop brings awestruck children of all ages through a prehistoric cluster of dinosaurs (with an erupting volcano), a flock of wading flamingoes and plenty of charleston imagery, including St. Michael’s church, the Morris island lighthouse and the 30-foottall juxtaposition of the new and old cooper river bridges. of course, there are also cartwheel-turning gingerbread men, Santa practicing his golf swing and an elf barely escaping a bite from a hungry alligator. The result is a light show that frequently ranks among lists of the top 10 in the country, alongside those in bigger cities like new orleans and atlanta. it’s been voted a top 20 event by the Southeastern tourism Society, receiving attention from The travel channel and Southern living magazine. “it definitely keeps us going through the winter,”

last year, the festival of lights drew 225,000 people during its two-month run, accounting for about a third of the park’s annual attendance. it’s grown to encompass far more than just a driving tour, as well. Sand sculptor damon farmer returned to the park this year to spend nine days carving a sequel to last
year’s “Scuba Santa,” featuring St. nick taking presents to little mermaid girls. with his tool belt of tiny knives and scrapers, farmer begins with 50 tons of sand, held in place by wooden boards wrapped around the giant pile. when he’s finished, the wood will be gone, leaving an intricate sculpture of impermanent art behind. “it’s job security — planned obsolescence,” said farmer, shrugging off the notion that seeing his work swept away is a bittersweet aspect of his chosen me-

that include the festival’s annual collectible ornament, featuring a charleston Single house for 2012. finally, for an up-close look at the light displays, climb aboard the festival train for a tour around the festival. on certain nights (available at the park’s website), special events include visits with Mrs. claus, outdoor movies, live music and ice sculpture competitions. after the show begins, volunteers like campground host Striebich transition from bulb replacement to manning the actual attractions, including conducting the train rides. Staff remains on call — it’s not uncommon for confused (real) deer to knock over a display, including the lit-up grazing (fake) deer along the roadway. at the end of each evening, it requires a full hour to power down the 2,500 breakers circulating electricity to each display, including new lights that are timed to move with accompanying music. over the course of its 23-year history, the holiday festival of lights has ushered cars with tags from all 50 states through its gates. Because the festival charges entry by the car, not by the person, it’s a great excuse to gather the family and pack in tightly for a visit to a magical, illuminated wonderland. Just make sure that everybody gets a good view through the windows, and don’t forget your gloves for cupping a mug of hot chocolate around the bonfire.

lg’s offers new concept in tanner plantation

here’s a new neighbor knocking around hanahan. lg’s on the creek has assumed the space formerly occupied by carolina crust gourmet pizza and pub in the tanner plantation shopping center. it’s a new concept under new ownership, the restaurant is quick to acknowledge. and in these newly appointed quarters, lg’s enjoys ample room. a painted brick application and warm yellow tones offer cozy surroundings. The l-shaped bar accommodates several patrons, as do a number of high-top tables and booths scattered throughout the restaurant. additionally, the outdoor area provides another gathering spot and a base for a game or two of cornhole. flatbreads, specialty pies,
zarella cheese with a tangy barbecue sauce on a soft but nicely flavored crust. and though the whitehead may sound unappetizing, it’s a good choice featuring garlic oil, mozzarella, feta and provolone cheeses. Six pasta dishes are available as half orders and prodigious portions assured us we made the right call ordering the smaller size, and even had lunch leftovers. orecchiette ($18.50, $11.75) were topped with shrimp, sausage bits and fresh spinach in garlic and olive oil napped with a bit of alfredo sauce. densely textured and imbued with the heat of the rendered sausage, this dish married rich and salty to a robust finish. The eggplant a la Michael is a keeper and can be ordered as an entree ($16.95) or side ($5). The eggplant is peeled, thinly sliced and pleasantly enriched with meatballs, sausage, tomato
and mozzarella. Shrimp diablo parmigiana ($18.50) failed to deliver a spicy “zuppa” and the shrimp were tucked in with a blanket of cheese that played against their tender sweetness. This is a dish where less would be more and parmesan better served than mozzarella. tenderloin steaks ($25.95, $26.95) replace the rib-eyes of the north charleston location; chicken and veal are equally balanced on the menu. kudos to them for an italian dessert menu ($5.95): cannoli, tiramisu, cheesecake and cassata cake. The latter marries sponge cake, a creamy filling similar to what you find in a cannoli and an almond-flavored icing. try it with espresso for the flavors of sweet Sicily. The servers are well-

Against three no-trump, West leads the spade queen. How do you plan to make nine tricks? Outsidethediamonds,youhave fivetoptricks.Soyouneedaminimum of four diamond tricks to makeyourcontract.Supposeyou win the spade lead with the ace and finesse the diamond jack. If thefinesseloses,thespadereturn will mean that you won’t make nine tricks unless the diamond 10 drops. This would be the case even when the diamonds were 3-3, for the entry to the diamonds has been removed. Accordingly, the best approach is to win the first spade (for fear of a club shift) and play a diamond to the king. Then continue by overtaking the diamond jack with dummy’s ace, even if West
has followed with a small card. Here, since the diamond queen has put in an appearance, you can simply dislodge the diamond 10 from East’s hand and make nine tricks: two spades, two hearts, four diamonds and a club. If the diamonds had been 3-3, the third round of diamonds would have established the suit, with the spade king as the entry to cash them. You will succeed when either defender begins with asingletonordoubletondiamond queen or 10. As we have seen, dummy’s 9-8-7 is then good enough to allow you to knock out the remaining diamond honor, letting you collect four diamond tricks and the contract. By reBekah Bradford Special to The Post and Courier The mustache seems like it’s here to stay. in fact, it’s gained iconic status in pop culture, and you can find its image on pint glasses, t-shirts, even on kidrobot’s labbit. heck, the month of november is now widely known as Movember. if you’re not in the loop, guys grow mustaches to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. check it out at us.movember.com. So this week’s trivia is all about the ’stache. current trivia champ greg larson is taking on gail ortiz, who works as a tutor.

ear aBBy: as veterans day approaches, may i share a few guidelines that can be helpful when interacting with veterans or service members? 1. it is never ok to ask a veteran if he or she has killed someone or to joke about it. if we have, we can’t even talk about it with our spouses, much less a stranger. 2. when you thank us for our service or pay for our meal, it is really appreciated. 3. please don’t tell us that wars are a waste of dollars or lives or were fought for oil. what we hear is that, in your opinion, our best friend died for nothing. we know many people disagree with war, but it’s better to keep your opinions to yourself. 4. Many of us now have ptSd. if you see us acting anxious or moving away from crowds, turning our backs to the wall or fidgeting, simple kindness or a little distraction will be appreciated. talk to us and give us some breathing room. 5. please remember that 15 percent of those who serve in the military are women, and some have been in combat. it’s better to ask, “are you a veteran?” rather than, “was your husband a soldier?” 6. as with any person who has a disability, please do not stare at us. we can be sensitive about our scars or injuries and would prefer not to be asked to relive a difficult
