charleston expands active outdoor scene in 2012

u

nless you require snow and mountains to satisfy your outdoor lifestyle appetite, charleston was the place to be in 2012. as someone who has tracked running, paddling, surfing, triathlon, yoga and all things sweaty, sunny and salty for years, charleston’s fitness and outdoors community continues to grow and blossom. where to begin?

Big numbers

it was yet another recordbreaking year for charleston’s big five events: the cooper river bridge run and walk (36,755 finishers), american heart association’s lowcountry heart walk (police-estimated 5,200 raised a record $650,000), susan g. komen lowcountry race for the cure (5,380 raised a record $900,000-plus), knights of columbus turkey day run and gobble wobble (5,672 finishers) and reindeer run (2,137 finishers).

recreation commission, came when the american canoe association chose the area for its fifth annual paddlesports conference and sup summit in early november.

Tri and beyond

The charleston sprint triathlon series made national news, somewhat, when its biggest celebrities to date, nascar drivers Jimmie Johnson and kasey kahne, competed in early July. perhaps the biggest physi-

cal feat of the year by a local was accomplished by charleston city councilwoman kathleen wilson. in september, the 49-yearold marathon swimmer, who had completed 11 previous big swims (including the english channel), completed the 26-mile Molokai channel swim in 20 hours, 49 minutes, calling it her toughest test to date. two weeks later, she was busy coordinating the second annual 12-mile swim around charleston. out on the isle of palms, the hub of beach volleyball in the charleston area, The windjammer, celebrated its 40th anniversary with what it does best: volleyball, beer, bands and bikinis. a reorganized push-up challenge, now known as the push-up & up chal-

lenge, focusing on dropout prevention, drew 220 people on 37 six-person teams, which cranked out 62,545 push-ups and raised more than $36,000 for communities in schools. one big number was posted in 2012 by the healthy charleston challenge, a model of weight loss programs at the Medical university of south carolina wellness center. after 10 sessions over five years, the challenge celebrated a total of 20,000 pounds — 10 tons! — lost by its participants by simply eating right, exercising vigorously and changing attitudes. what better place to have an attitude adjustment than right here in charleston. plenty to do year-round. and 2013 shouldn’t be any different.

hold on to the holidays with last-chance events

t

his is it, folks. The end of the holiday season is upon us. and with it brings the last chance to take part in some of the events you maybe haven’t had the time to enjoy.

festival of lights

one of the lowcountry’s most beloved holiday traditions, this spectacle of more than 2 million lights has illuminated James island county park since november. but you’re running out of time if you haven’t driven through the 3-mile loop yet as the disassembling will begin next week. drawing 225,000 people during its two-month run last year, the festival features hundreds of light-up displays, including everything from a prehistoric cluster of dinosaurs (complete with an erupting volcano) to traditional holiday fare, such as cartwheel-turning gingerbread men and santa practicing his golf swing. There’s also plenty of charleston imagery, including st. Michael’s church, the Morris island lighthouse and the 30-foot-tall juxtaposition of the new and old cooper river bridges. but the fun doesn’t end there. also available to folks who want to get out of their car and stretch their legs is the winter wonderland and santa’s Village. while there, roast marshmallows, stroll through the enchanted Forest walking trail, enjoy the card display and more. The light show frequently ranks among lists of the top 10 in the country, alongside those in bigger cities like new orleans and atlanta. it’s also been voted a top 20 event by the southeastern tourism society, receiving attention from The travel channel and southern living magazine, so if you haven’t been yet this year, get going! admission is $12-$15. Find out details, including hours of operation, by calling 7954386 or going to www. holidayfestivaloflights.com.

outdoor movie

speaking of the Festival of lights, a cool thing the charleston county park and recreation commission is doing this weekend is featuring an outdoor holiday film. From 6-10 p.m. saturday and sunday, head over to the Main stage in the winter wonderland with a chair and a warm blanket and enjoy a seasonal movie. The showing is free with paid park entry.

the 10 worst movies of the year

by barry koltnow The Orange County Register

a

re you giddy yet? The new york and los angeles film critics have spoken. The screen actors guild has spoken. The broadcast Film critics association has spoken. The american Film institute has spoken. and, of course, the silly golden globes people have spoken. yes, movie awards season is in full swing. between now and Jan. 10, when the academy of Motion picture arts and sciences announces its oscar nominees, you will be subjected to endless speculation from legitimate film critics and blogging hacks alike as to which film is the front runner for the best picture oscar. is it “lincoln?” is it “Zero dark Thirty?” is it “argo?” is it “les Miserables?” is it “silver linings playbook?” is it “amour?” is it “life of pi?” is it “django unchained?” is it “The best exotic Marigold hotel?” trust me, the front runner will change more times than you can count because oscar prognosticating has become a cottage industry in hollywood, and too many journalists and pseudo-journalists justify their existence by trying to convince you that they have inside information on the oscars’ race. if you’re not betting real money on the outcome, what’s the difference? you’ll know everything Jan. 10 anyway. in the meantime, a lot of truly horrible movies will get lost in the oscar hype. too much time and effort is spent at the end of the year saluting the movie winners. what about the movie losers? They need to be identified because they wasted our

precious time and money. They need to be singled out so that we can recognize them the next time they come around in a different form. great movies are worth the time and expense. bad movies aren’t worth the price of popcorn. here are the worst movies of 2012, or at least the worst movies i saw in 2012, and i saw a lot of them. This may be the last time you hear these titles mentioned in pomelissa moseley/lionsgate tracy bennett/columbia pictures, sony/ap lite company. 1. ‘Battleship’

This was a particularly bad year for up-and-comer taylor kitsch, who parlayed a sexy turn as a football player on tV’s “Friday night lights” into two coveted spots on this dubious list of turkeys (he also starred in no. 4). i don’t know how you felt about oliver stone’s “savages,” but taylor starred in that one, as well. he almost got the hat trick.

2. ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’

based on a best-selling pregnancy guidebook. let me repeat that; it was based on a best-selling pregnancy guidebook. That is not exactly the greatest source material for a movie. and, sure enough, it was about as much fun to experience as labor pains.

3. ‘That’s My Boy’

This is the obligatory adam sandler submission for worst movie of the year honors. he dragged andy samberg down with him on this one, although the sandler look-alike went down willingly.

8. ‘Dredd 3D’

it was a dreadful comicbook movie in 1995. it was even more dreadful in 2012 because they made it in 3-d and charged an extra fee for the privilege. The futuristic plot features a reality-altering drug called “slo-Mo.” That’s how it felt while i was watching it, like my life was passing by in

the best movies of 2012

by ann hornaday The Washington Post.

m

ovie-wise, 2012 was about a lot of things, from girl-power in “The hunger games,” “brave” and “beasts of the southern wild” to hollywood discovering actors and audiences older than 35 (see “best exotic Marigold hotel,” surprise success of). Mostly, though, 2012 was marked by a consistent devotion to quality, whether in indie precincts occupied by “bernie,” “The sessions” and “silver linings playbook” or the more mainstream universe of “skyfall.” big or small, happy or sad, swinging for the fences or drilling down deep, the movies carried the same message: it’s all good. note that some of these films have not yet been released locally.

1. ‘Zero Dark Thirty’

kathryn bigelow’s taut thriller about the hunt for osama bin laden exemplifies the oscar-winning director at the top of her game, working with a script by Mark boal that not only allows viewers to make sense of the complicated intelligence, military and foreign policy issues that have animated the past decade, but also creates a brand-new cinematic genre: the reported film.

2. ‘Lincoln’

steven spielberg and tony kushner’s historical drama about the 16th president leaves behind fusty, greatman portraiture, instead engaging in a lively game of political cat and mouse that bears uncanny contemporary echoes and leaves viewers feeling as if they’ve just

spent two hours with the shrewd, funny, melancholy — and yes, great — man himself.

3. ‘The Waiting Room’

peter nicks’ magnificent documentary spends a day in the life of an overcrowded and under-resourced hospital emergency room in oakland, calif., where a staff of compassionate professionals provide care to a startlingly diverse population of patients. This subtle, compassionate tableau lifts the veil on a world often described in terms of squalor and despair, finding the inherent dignity and perseverance therein.

director Joe wright took a big chance when he staged the adaptation of a beloved literary classic as light opera, largely within the confines of a tiny theater. The conceit worked, with the inherent theatricality of tolstoy’s story and imperial st. petersburg society coming to the fore, as well as the novel’s alternately rigorous and poetic moral sensibility. “anna” joined such similarly risky fare as “cloud atlas” and “holy Motors” in suggesting that cinematic ambition, audacity and vision aren’t dead yet.

dexter romweber duo

dexter romweber rose to popularity within the underground music scene in the mid-’80s with the somewhat grungy rockabilly band Flat duo Jets. with a sound that no one had heard before, Flat duo Jets became a cult phenomenon throughout the ’80s and ’90s, touring with bands such as the cramps and r.e.M. before disbanding in 1999. romweber ventured off into solo music, making rock/ blues, distorted folk records that were described as either genius or demented, or both. afterward, romweber and his sister, sara romweber, formed the two-piece group, the dexter romweber duo, in late 2000. to date, the group has been playing the underground club scene as well as major tours with artists such as neko case, cat power, reverend horton heat and the white stripes. all of the duo’s more wellknown tour companions cite romweber as a major musical influence in the documentary “two headed cow,” which chronicles romweber’s music and life. top 10 albums

AP music writers pick the best of 2012 by MesFin Fekadu, chris talbott and nekesa MuMbi Moody // Associated Press

mesfin fekadu’s picks:

1

Nas, “Life is Good”: “i am a graphic classic song composer,” nas raps on the intro to his latest album. and he’s right. you may disagree, but nas is the best rapper alive, and with “life is good,” he’s got the year’s top album, regardless of genre. on “life,” he’s spitting rhymes about his ex-wife, kelis, like the soulful “bye baby,” his daughter on “daughters” and his childhood on “a Queens story.” he’s a topnotch lyricist with a knack for storytelling, and it all makes for impeccable music. he knows life is good, and so is this album.

2

Of Monsters and Men, “My Head Is an Animal”: The icelandic fivesome have melodies that are eerie, jamming, groovy and overall epic. The voices of the male and female lead singers blend so beautifully that it sounds like magic.

3

Elle Varner, “Perfectly Imperfect”: her raspy and powerful voice, over crisp production, easily gives elle Varner r&b’s best offering of 2012. The 12-track set has an amazing flow that will have you hitting the replay button again and again!

4

Lianne La Havas, “Is Your Love Big Enough?”: lianne la havas’ honesty pierces on the tracks on her debut album, and it makes the collection of songs both heavy and beautiful. she’s got an acoustic folk-rock-soul sound that is unique, and what’s best is that heavy voice of hers: This london singer sounds like she’s singing straight to your soul.

5

Frank Ocean, “channel ORANGE”: Frank is fresh. enough said.

6

Miguel, “Kaleidoscope Dream”: it’s a bit shocking, though more exciting, to see the grammys acknowledge Miguel’s multitalents with five nominations. They got it right. he’s helping change r&b without dismissing the genre’s more traditional sound from acts like Faith evans and tamia. From “do you ...” to “candles in the sun,” he hits all the right notes on his sophomore disc.

7

Emeli Sande, “Our Version of Events”: The debut album from this scottish import commands your attention, thanks to emeli sande’s strong pipes jelled with r&b and pop sounds. her voice helps her songs easily come to life. Just check out “suitcase” if you’re not convinced.

continued on page e13

8

Kendrick Lamar, “good kid m.A.A.d city”: The major label debut from dr. dre’s protege is dope for its clever rhymes and soulful skits. he’s going places.

9

Mumford & Sons, “Babel”: Mumford & sons continue to hark on love and life on “babel,” and it sounds masterful with its rock harmonies that are both rugged and calming.

10

Shiny Toy Guns, “III”: The year’s best dance and electronic-based album isn’t on top 40 radio. shiny toy guns returned in 2012 with a third album and its lead singer, carah Faye. The foursome sounds better than ever over beats that are addictive and vibes that are dreamy. now dance.

ap music writers pick top albums

nekesa mumbi moody’s picks:

1

Emeli Sande, “Our Version of Events”: sande’s forceful, soulful voice is enough of a lure, but coupled with the most poetic, beautiful lyrics and melodies of the year, sande’s debut album was a brilliant work that was shamefully overlooked by the recording academy for grammy contention in 2013. don’t make the same mistake if you haven’t already listened. This one is a stunner.

2

Taylor Swift, “Red”: last time, we had John Mayer to thank. This time around, Jake gyllenhaal is

most likely the reason for swift’s ire in songs like the wickedly vengeful “we are never ever getting back together,” as well as poignant, heartbreaking songs like “i almost do” or “all too well.” at 22, the former teen ingenue also flirts with sensuality on songs like “treacherous” and “everything has changed.” she may still have a cutesy image, but swift has grown up, and continues to mature into a singer-songwriter with musical gravitas.

3

Frank Ocean, “channel ORANGE”: ocean’s grand statement about his sexuality seemed to overshadow the real reason why he was one of music’s most

chris talbott’s picks:

1

Cloud Nothings, “Attack on Memory”: blame most of the entries on this list on a conversation i had last year with Jeff tweedy, who said one of the ways to stay in love with music was to seek out new, young acts. ohio’s cloud nothings punched me in the solar plexus with this unrepentant blast of rock that tackles big themes while musically careening down a steep, car-lined street on an out-ofcontrol skateboard.

2

Natural Child, “For the Love of The Game” and “Hard in Heaven”: Mining an era that seems to have been purposely forgotten by today’s young rockers, this bluesy rock trio from nash-

important figures: his impressive talent. “Thinkin’ bout you” gave just a taste of ocean’s allure: with the help of others, he crafted a collection of musically and lyrically daring songs that stand out starkly from the status quo of pop and r&b worlds.

4

Esperanza Spalding, “Radio Music Society”: The 2011 best new artist winner delivered her most accessible album to date, melding her jazz roots with r&b for an enchanting album.

5

Alabama Shakes, “Boys & Girls”: brittany howard’s vocals slay on every track — though her voice has been described as Joplin-esque, she’s

ville was on a groove so tight this year that it released two albums. it’s a toss-up which one’s better, so we’re not choosing. both show they could be nashville’s next breakthrough band.

3

Kendrick Lamar, “good kid, m.A.A.d. city”: displaying the limitless ambition of a young rZa or kanye west, this much-anticipated, dr. dre-sanctified release is a cinematic concept album stuffed full of examples of the los angeles rapper’s versatility, creativity and willingness to take chances most other rappers would blanche at.

4

Jack White, “Blunderbuss”: we’ve been waiting a long time to hear what white would sound like without the filter of his many

From page e12

quickly proving that she’s a force all her own. From hard-rocking guitar-based tracks to slower grooves, “boys & girls” simply smolders.

6

Various Artists, “The Hunger Games soundtrack: Songs From District 12 and Beyond”: From taylor swift and the civil wars to Miranda lambert’s pistol annies, this collection of songs made for the blockbuster film captured the bleakness of the novel better than the movie. in an album of highlight after highlight, the secret sisters’ simple and beautiful “tomorrow will be kinder” was at the apex.

bandmates. “blunderbuss,” a little bit whimsical, a little bit menacing, offered all the things we’d hoped we’d find, plus a few surprises.

5

Alabama Shakes, “Boys & Girls”: This debut album from the alabama rock quartet heralds the arrival of a major talent in singer brittany howard, but she’s not the only star here. her bandmates craft simple but compelling, soulful music that combines with howard’s voice to make some of the most uplifting rock we’ve heard in years.

6

Frank Ocean, “channel ORANGE”: The tweedy effect really kicked in last year when i heard ocean’s mix tape, “nostalgia/ultra,” probably the best

7

Killer Mike, “R.A.P. Music”: killer Mike has been under the radar in the rap world for years. and it’s too bad this great didn’t elevate his profile in the mainstream, because it’s better than 82.4 percent of what’s out there today (and yes, that’s my scientific survey). he mixes rap braggadocio with biting, thought-provoking social commentary.

8

Elle Varner, “Perfectly Imperfect”: can we get a “refill” of Varner for 2013? besides her seductive hit, Varner’s album showed that she’s one of music’s bright new talents with songs that ranged from sensuous bedroom workouts to dramatic love ballads.

album of 2011. while “channel orange” is disappointingly restrained musically, like “nostalgia/ ultra” it is a triumphant example as a social document that’s both fearless and insightful yet still entertaining enough to reach popular audiences.

7

Turbo Fruits, “Butter”: sometimes you just want to bob your head along to mindless songs about parties and girls and fighting and motorcycles, and the third album from these rising rockers on kings of leon’s record label helps prove edM hasn’t killed off rock ’n’ roll. Far from it.

8

King Tuff, “King Tuff”: twenty-five years after its start, sub pop is still unearthing bands

9

The Robert Glasper Experiment, “Black Radio”: They say you can’t really criticize something if you don’t have a solution to fix it. well, with “black radio,” the jazz pianist offered his take on how the often stagnant medium could be improved. and it was dreamy.

10

Nas, “Life Is Good”: actually, Mesfin, it’s been a while since nas released an album that lived up to his arguable title as rap’s greatest Mc. but he delivered this year with an album that was a throwback to the beats that dominated hip-hop when new york was king of the rap game, and of course, nas’ rhymes.

you need to hear. This time it’s Vermont’s king tuff, purveyors of weirdly irresistible sugar-coated psychedelic pop songs that refuse to leave your brain.

9

Japandroids, “Celebration Rock”: beginning and ending with the sound of fireworks, this Vancouver, british columbia, twopiece’s album is exactly what its title describes: grand, anthemic songs about the great moments in life.

10

Trampled By Turtles, “Stars and Satellites”: The awesomely named Minnesota string band has been on the rise for years and its gentle, introspective sixth album adds a layer of artistry and emotion only hinted at in previous work.

top 5 local albums of the year

5

luke cunningham, “heart pressure”: luke cunningham is one of those rare singers that seems to be aware that he possesses some serious songwriting chops, and yet refuses to let it go to his head. heck, i can tell you that if i had written even one of the better tracks such as “For the best” or “amnesia,” i’d be taking out advertising space on highway billboards to let the world know. as if his songwriting talent isn’t enough, when cunningham gets up on stage to perform, he delivers a satisfying and energetic live show. local guitarist micah nichols, formerly of crowfield, produced the album, and cunningham recently got the chance to show off his talent at the legendary bluebird cafe in nashville, tenn. well, maybe “show off” isn’t the best term, given the artist’s humble attitude, but based on the strong material on “heart pressure,” cunningham is definitely going places.

4

oh! ginger, “oh! ginger”: i’ve been a fan of lindsay holler’s kind of music ever since i first saw her perform with her old band, the dirty kids, five or six years ago. the best thing about holler’s music, though, is that she rarely sticks to a single style, flirting with the likes of alt-country, jazz, classic rock and cuban, among others. oh! ginger was one of holler’s projects she pursued this past year, a collaboration with former dirty kids bandmate michael hanf. as usual, the music produced by the pair didn’t sound much like anything either had produced in the past. mostly composed and recorded through correspondence between holler’s home here and hanf’s in new york, the oh! ginger eps, which saw two of its planned three parts released in 2012, featured a dizzying mix of styles and moods, and i eagerly look forward to the final installment and whatever both holler and hanf have planned next.

3

crowfield, “the diamond sessions”: Funded by a kickstarter.com project and dedicated to late local manager and producer Johnny diamond, crowfield’s third studio album was as emotional to listen to as it obviously was for the band to record. six months after its release, i still get a lump in my throat when i listen to frontman tyler mechem sing on tracks such as “measure of a life” and “black hills.” the personal feelings and experiences mechem pours into his songs is part of what makes him one of charleston’s best songwriters. while the band had seen some pretty major lineup changes since even before “the diamond sessions” was recorded, the core of mechem and drummer parker gins still make sure that listeners to the band’s albums get a quality experience.

2

the royal tinfoil, “well water communion”: all too often when you see a band play a great live set and then buy its studio album, those studio tracks just don’t capture the spirit of that live performance. the royal tinfoil comes about as close to matching the looseness and spontaneity of its live show on “well water communion” as any band ever will. the sweet yet strong voice of lily slay mixes well with that of fellow vocalist lamont boles, which reminds me of new orleans stalwart dr. John. Just listen to him sing “Fill up the car with gasoline, let’s go someplace we’ve never seen” on “run away.” you can hear the emotion behind the words. i also still get goosebumps from slay’s “excuuuuse meee!” that starts the song “die already.” grab the cd and enjoy it, but still go see this band live the next time it plays locally.

1

shovels & rope, “o’ be Joyful”: i probably can’t heap any more praise on this album than what has already been written by music journalists all over the country, but since cary ann hearst and michael trent are local folks, i’ll take a shot at it. the husband and wife team, who go by the name shovels & rope, had already had underground success both as a duo and by themselves. when “o’ be Joyful” was released earlier this year, though, all those years of playing bars and clubs and logging thousands of miles on the road finally came to fruition. much like acts such as the civil wars and June carter and Johnny cash, the voices of trent and hearst just seem to meld together like one beautiful sound. songs such as “keeper” and “tickin’ bomb” show off that unearthly blend, and i dare you not to get goosebumps while listening. while a country twang permeates the body of the album, the duo touches on aspects of garage rock, blues and folk too. “o’ be Joyful” has shown up on many a critic’s best-of list for 2012, and i’ll gladly add my name to that tally. — by devin grant

ke$ha

Warrior/RCA

C-

has it really been three years since the girl with the dollar sign in her name had an unlikely hit with “tik tok,” an ode to the late night party life? indeed, since that song inexplicably raced up the charts, ke$ha has released a follow-up, written an autobiography, and now turns in her third studio album, “warrior.” i wish i could say that “warrior” was anything more than a carbon copy of what listeners got on the first two albums,

green day

Tre!/Reprise

B+

after writing a couple of punk rock operas a la The who and even seeing one become a hit broadway musical, it didn’t seem there was much more that the bay area punk-pop band green day could do to top themselves. That probably explains why this fall the band released a trio of albums. Much like when kiss did a similar experiment in the ’70s, green day’s albums have a novelty to them, complete with corresponding titles of “uno!,” “dos!” and “tre!” unlike the kiss albums, these three

buddy miller and Jim lauderdale Buddy and Jim/New West

A

both buddy Miller and Jim lauderdale have done more for the americana genre than perhaps any other artists out there. had the two men been writing and performing songs back in the 1950s, when honky tonk country music was king, they would have been stars. both men do ok by themselves, especially Miller, who recently toured with robert plant as part of the former led Zeppelin singer’s band of Joy. now, Miller and lauderdale have joined

but the truth is that, aside from there being more explicit lyrics this time out, there’s nothing new. granted, ke$ha does a good job recycling her party girl blend of pop and hiphop with a liberal dose of auto-tune. on tracks such as “warrior” and “Thinking of you” it sounds like she’s having a grand time. The repetitive nature of the songs, however, quickly grow old, especially when one realizes that it is not only the album tracks but the albums themselves that sound the same. you’d be hard pressed to differentiate

“warrior” from the remix album that revisited her first two albums. ke$ha often talks about her musical influences when she’s interviewed, and she throws out some pretty interesting and eclectic choices. perhaps if she decides one day to move away from the tired party girl persona that first made her famous, ke$ha will be able to get a bit more respect in the music world. key tracks: “warrior,” “thinking of you,” “only want to dance with you”

albums are not solo efforts by each band member, nor were they released all on the same day like the kiss ones. dropped about a month apart from each other, the final album, “tre!,” just hit stores. while each of the albums has featured a surprisingly solid lineup of songs, it appears that billy Joe armstrong, Mike dirnt and tre cool have saved the best for last. This is by no means a punk rock record, but for all intents and purposes, green day is no longer really a punk rock band. The music on “tre!” ranges from ballads such as “brutal love” and “drama

Queen” to catchy pop-rock gems such as “X-kid” and “walk away.” The best track is undoubtedly “8th avenue serenade,” with its ridiculously catchy guitar riff. armstrong seems to have an unending supply of catchy pop hooks, and the unexpected quality of the three themed albums only drives that point home. while “tre!” is definitely the best of the three, one owes it to themselves to check out the first two as well to see how consistent green day is this late in its career.

forces for an album that shows off the strengths of each. “buddy and Jim” is a combination of original compositions and covers, but the album is held together by the quality of the chosen songs. one of the songs penned by the duo, “That’s not even why i love you,” is as fine a song in the high lonely sound tradition as has ever been written. “The train That carried My gal From town” features a “boom-chicka-boom” tempo reminiscent of the late Johnny cash, while “Vampire girl” is as good excuse as any to employ the reverb pedal for some lovely retro guitar sounds. There is no rhyme or reason to the song

selections here. i’m guessing that lauderdale and Miller spent a lot of time while preparing for this album listening to old music and comparing notes. it also sounds like they had a blast recording the music once they got into the studio. For fans of roots and americana music, this organic collaboration between two giants of the genre is required listening.

asian flavors bloom at red orchids china bistro by deidre schipani

ho would have thought that there are more chinese restaurants in the united states than Mcdonald’s? certainly not me. yet in the charleston Metro area alone, there are nearly 100, but most are carryout. where to get good chinese food is a question frequently asked by our readers. dragon palace on daniel island delivers the standardbearers of this cuisine in america. The now-closed palais de Jade always could be counted on for a quality regional chinese eating experience. osaka and Zen asian Fusion provide a panasian menu that marries many cultures and satisfies many of our readers. trying to distill down all the “chow chows” (the name given to chinese eateries in their early to mid-19thcentury days) is no easy task. however, red orchids china bistro, the modest endeavor of kelly and tony chu, keeps surfacing as a place for “chinese.” kelly chu’s parents owned the Joy luck restaurant (now closed) in west ashley, so the spirit of the wok is maintained through the red orchids enterprise.

Red Orchids restaurant is at 1401 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. in West Ashley. tility and abundance, placed in a small shrine in the rear of the restaurant.

Most entrees easily serve two, and because even numbers are good luck in chinese culture, it is easy to share appetizers that are portioned in twos, fours and sixes. dessert is not common after a chinese meal. and the ubiquitous fortune cookies are an american conceit, not chinese. but at red orchids, kelly chu has developed a menu of signature ice creams that you can order by the “shot” for $2 a pop. do so. we tried green tea, black sesame and lychee. you will delight in her playful laboratory of flavors.

service

our server was wellinformed and attentive. he was a wonderful tour guide for the menu and gave accurate readings for the spiciness of each dish. however, he suggested a braised duck dish ($16.95) over a sauteed dish, but the duck itself was not braised and a bit on the dry side. tony chu was manning the bar and the brisk carryout trade, and the staff at the time of our visit was engaged with the guests and attentive to the needs of the diners. The tables for two could be bigger, considering the communal nature of chinese dining, but when the urge to eat “chi fan” strikes, the abundance of choices and portions at red orchids china bistro will not disappoint.

second paisano’s location keeps things top-notch

t

he newest addition to the paisano’s family rests in west ashley at the former athens pizza express on ashley river road. it’s an orderly, clean venue, highlighted by dark woods and family photos. obviously, the decor is in abidance with the paisano’s mantra, as the rough translation of the restaurant’s name is pal or friend. so naturally, it remains a terrific place for paisanos to enjoy a sandwich, an original, deep-dish “Fat boy” pizza or even a late-night pie at the James island location. The restaurant’s origins are tied to gilroy’s, as paisano’s replaced the James island pizza parlor in 2009, with the west ashley location joining about a month ago. but in terms of quality and

garlic toppings; the ranchzilla featuring a cilantro, jalapeno and ranch base; or the chicken parm with fried chicken and extra cheese. but my go-to, or even to-go, order doesn’t include any of the above mentioned. rather, it’s the meatball parm ($7.99), built on crunchy, toasty bread and filled with warm, sweet marinara and bite-size chunks of meatballs. add a side salad ($3.99), which isn’t really a side salad at all. it’s much larger and teeming with thinly sliced mozzarella. if you’re feeling particularly ambitious, go instead with the n.y. chopped salad ($6.99). otherwise, the menu is rife with dry-rubbed or sauced wings, calzones and a steady collection of sandwiches, pleasing for paisanos for all A meatball parm sub from Paisano’s. shapes and ages.

shift happens photographs by marie rodriguez

Jeffrey cohen of Jivamukti yoga charleston had been talking about the end of the Mayan calendar for nearly five years, so it came as no surprise that he held a “oneof-a-kind” yoga event to celebrate. The party, called shift happens, included a “live music yoga tribal dance party” featuring black lights and Mayan beats that charged the atmosphere and shook the ground like an earthquake. participants were urged to wear fluorescent, neon or white clothing; many in attendance took advantage of the fluorescent body painting that was offered. The event also included an aerial yoga performance, drum circle, chanting and vegan food provided by The sprout, puree, dell’z deli and unbaked. For more photos from the event, go to charlestonscene.com.

t’s hard to believe that 2013 is almost here, especially considering the Mayan prophecy that was supposed to doom us all on dec. 21. head2head is all about looking forward while not forgetting about the past, so this week’s trivia is about new year’s celebrations, past and present. two-time trivia champ Vickie douglas is going up against Mike pratt.

Questions

1. what does “auld lang syne” mean? 2. what is the month of January named for? 3. which calendar uses animals to mark years? 4. the first new year’s eve ball drop in times square was in what year? 5. what is the Jewish new year called? 6. what is the most watched parade on new year’s day? 7. kwanzaa ends on Jan. 1 and its name comes from the swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza.” what does it mean in english? 8. in 1751, the british calendar act established Jan. 1 as the beginning of the year. what was it before? 9. eating black-eyed peas, ham or cabbage on new year’s eve is supposed to bring what to the person? 10. what did the ancient persians give as gifts on new year’s day?

File/peter Foley/bloomberg news

The Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball is tested last December. Do you know when the first ball drop in New York was held?

vickie’s answers

1. i never used to know what this meant, but it’s “time goes by” or “gone by.” 2. it’s one of the ancient gods. maybe greek? 3. chinese 4. um, a long time ago? For a year, i’ll say 1912. 5. i’m pretty sure it’s rosh hashanah. 6. i don’t know. who has parades on new year’s day? 7. not really up on my swahili, but maybe it has something to do with new beginnings. 8. this is probably wrong. July 1. 9. luck 10. i think they gave each other money.

conclusion vickie takes the win by a slim margin, but it’s enough to return next week for yet another round. head2head will be back in 2013 and wishes everyone a safe, happy new year.

ear abby: how can i set healthy boundaries with my best friend without feeling guilty? i have always been supportive and available because i sympathized with her difficult family dynamics during childhood and adulthood. she often talks to me about her problems with family and ever-changing relationships with men, but rarely allows me or others to share their points of view or personal concerns. saying “no” to her is challenging under any circumstance, and she demands that all focus be on her in social situations. i love and accept my friend as she is, and i try to give her all the grace i have. i now realize that setting healthy boundaries is the only way i can sustain our friendship. i know this dynamic may put a strain on our relationship, so why do i feel so guilty? — tested in northern caliFornia DEAR TESTED: That’s a good question, and one that I can’t answer for you. As long as you allow this friend to take advantage of you, the more your resentment will build until the relationship becomes one of diminishing returns. So tell this selfcentered person as nicely as possible that you are not a therapist, and because her problems persist, she should talk to one. dear abby: do you ever

dear abby get tired of giving advice to people who ask commonsense questions, or those who probably know the answer to their problems if they just thought it out? — JiM in west Virginia DEAR JIM: The answer to your question is no. I love what I do and consider it an honor to be trusted. While the reply to a question may be obvious to you, it isn’t to the person who asks me. Common sense tends to go out the window when there are strong emotions involved. dear abby is written by abigail van buren, also known as Jeanne phillips, and was founded by her mother, pauline phillips. write dear abby at www. dearabby.com or p.o. box 69440, los angeles, ca 90069. to receive a collection of abby’s most memorable and most frequently requested poems and essays, send your name and mailing address, plus check or money order for $7 to: dear abby: keepers booklet, p.o. box 447, mount morris, il 61054-0447.
