yoga marathon turns 9

event raises funds and awareness for louie’s kids

he obstacles facing this nation in regard to the childhood obesity epidemic and the resulting escalating health crisis are underscored by the work of locally based Louie’s Kids. first, the nonprofit, founded and led by Louis yuhasz of Sullivan’s island, raised money and sent children to relatively expensive, and intensive, camps to receive expert counseling.

The approach, however, not only reached too few kids, but the follow-through, or lack thereof, at home often doomed them to return to overeating and inactivity.

Then Louie’s Kids created fit Kids, modeled after the counseling at camps but offered in local schools using local professionals and staff in a multiweek after-school program. it worked for most while the students attended fit Kids but often couldn’t be sustained after the program was over. once again, it goes back to parents and the habits at home and of peers. many, unfortunately and unbelievably, aren’t willing to recognize the problem and do anything about it.

Louie’s Kids then ushered in run Buddies, a mentoring program that sought local volunteers to work with kids in local schools by walking or running with them. as that program tried to fledge, the local and national headlines of molestation by Skip reVille and Jerry Sandusky scared off many would-be mentors and some parents. while yuhasz is frustrated and the nonprofit is basically throwing in the towel on its own programing efforts, he remains undaunted in his mission to find some sustainable way to help overweight and obese children. “i’m not giving up, and i’m not going anywhere,” said yuhasz, adding that parents must take obesity “as seriously as if their children had

cancer.” yuhasz, whose strength is keeping the issue in the public eye, and Louie’s Kids are redirecting efforts to help children and their parents via its website, continued awareness and funding partnerships between Louie’s Kids and like-minded causes for programming, such as an after-school fitness program.

yoga marathon

as with most worthy accomplishments in life, it takes cash to get things done. and one of Louie’s Kid’s signature fund- and awareness-raising events takes place this weekend.

The ninth annual whole foods market yoga marathon will start at noon Saturday in marion Square and include local yoga teachers taking turns leading the crowd, typically 80 to 100 adults and kids, through 108 sun salutations. register to raise money via the yoga marathon or pay $20 to register at www. louieskids.org.

local surf flick

Locally based surfing film production company Thomas Brothers productions will debut its second film, “Look to the tropics,” at a free event 7 and 9 p.m. friday at the tides hotel on folly Beach.

it’s one of those “can you believe it’s been 20 years?” moments.

The iop connector run has been held on the first Saturday in october ever since the isle of palms connector bridge, officially the clyde moultrie dangerfield highway, was finished. and while it’s gone through many incarnations, efforts are being made to make this year’s race, starting at 8 a.m. Saturday on palm Boulevard on the island, a celebration, with a complimentary beer garden and live music by planeJane.

river otter relay

The 2nd annual river otter 10K trail relay will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the awendaw passage of the palmetto trail in awendaw, starting at the kayak launch

at the end of rosa green road. But you’ll need a relay buddy to compete in the all-male, all-female or coed divisions. participants will run about a 5K, complete a task (explained at the start of the race) and run back to the start to tag your teammate. your teammate then will run the same route and complete a task as well. if someone doesn’t complete a task, the team will be disqualified. cost is $20 per person. a portion of the proceeds will benefit the river otters at the S.c. aquarium. for more info, go to eagleendurance.com.

‘frankenweenie’ revived to great effect for new film By roger moore MCT

rankenweenie” is darned near an instant classic. tim Burton has taken the animated short that launched his career and expanded it into a vivid and moving essay on science and love: the love a budding middleschool scientist, Victor frankenstein, has for his dog, Sparky.

That was the kernel of the original 1984 “frankenweenie,” back at the beginning of Burton’s career. Burton gives that genius concept full voice in a rich, delicately textured, 3-d jewel in the stop-motion animation style.

Victor (voiced by charlie tahan) is a loner, a smart kid who spends hours in the attic, fiddling with science projects. he’s pretty much friendless, save for his beloved weenie dog, Sparky. mom (catherine o’hara) indulges him, but dad (martin Short) wants the boy to get out, make some friends and take up a sport. Victor just wants to come up with a project for the big science fair at school. dad suggests they “compromise,” and to dad, that means “nobody gets what they want,” so Victor finds himself at the plate, struggling to master baseball. miracle of miracles, he hits a home run. But a highlight of his young life is crushed when Sparky chases the home-run ball into the street and is killed.

Victor, a morose, quiet kid, mourns in a morose, quiet way. mom’s reassurance that no one you ever love dies, “they just move into a special place in your heart,” isn’t enough. it’s only when Victor sits through a demented, inspired thunderstorm lesson by his eastern Bloc science

But it is Burton’s ability to give heart to the weird, the unsympathetic and sometimes animated characters in his films that has been the hallmark of the director’s career. don’t be surprised if your eyes mist over for a silly dog of clay and the stick-boy who loves him. and parents, if you didn’t know, choose the words of comfort you say to a child mourning a lost pet carefully. with the inspiration of the right science teacher, “we’d bring him back if we could” might come back to bite you.

‘pitch perfect’ a fun, on-key comedy By roger moore MCT

ho knew there was this much fun left in glee clubs so long after “glee” jumped the shark? “pitch perfect” is a frothy, funny, dizzy and derivative farce set in the competitive world of college a cappella groups. it’s “glee” without the soap opera or the sex, but stuffed with comic caricatures, hilarious one-liners and blessed with a cast that’s up to a little song and dance.

Sweet little anna Kendrick, usually cast as too-young/ in-over-her-head (“up in the air,” “what to expect when you’re expecting”) plays the cynical, rebellious would-be dJ and record producer who heads to Barden college at her dad’s insistence. That’s where she hooks up with the Barden Bellas, a hypercompetitive chorus that lives for the chance to take down a cappella’s national collegiate champs, the frat-boyish nerds of “treble makers.”

The Bellas don sexy stewardess uniforms, circa 1966, and sing dated pop tunes in close harmony set to fetching choreography. imperious aubrey (anna camp) and perky chloe (Brittany Snow) run the skinny-girls-onparade show.

But this year’s version of The Bellas has a black lesbian belter (ester dean); an oversexed bombshell (alexis Knapp); a disturbed, whisper-voiced asian coed (comic hana mae Lee); and fat amy, a big, blowsy tasmanian devil with “an orthodox Jew pony-tail” rendered in broad, boisterous strokes by rebel wilson.

Beca (Kendrick), borderline goth girl, fan of hip-hop and mistress of her own remixes, doesn’t exactly fit in with these misfits.

There are auditions, rehearsals (done in goofy, wellcut montages), contests and a riff-off, where the various groups spontaneously tear through the modern pop catalog, from Kelly clarkson to Bruno mars.

The “big contest” formula means that this is a lot like every recent music or dance film, from “drumline” to “you got Served.” and it’s so much like “glee” they even insert a “glee” joke or two, casting the bespectacled christopher mintz-plasse in a big cameo that’s plainly meant to remind us of the kid in the wheelchair from the tV show.

But it’s not the plot or even the singing that sells “pitch perfect.” writer Kay cannon and her cast pepper this thing with zingers. it’s all “a

(“i set fires to feel joy.”)

There’s even a broadcast team for the contests, an addon that produces double entendres and belly-yuks from John michael higgins and elizabeth Banks as two aged ex-gleeks with many a snarky take on today’s singers.

They pitched everything but the kitchen sink into “pitch perfect”: donald faison (“Scrubs”) shows up with an aged-out-of-college singing group that neither advances the story nor adds laughs.

The romance side of things (Skyler astin plays Beca’s

love interest) is a nonstarter, and the love interest’s magician/“Star wars” freak roommate (Ben platt) is plainly an afterthought. The villainous singer Bumper (adam deVine) may get sued for ripping off Jack Black’s shtick and demeanor.

But Kendrick never lets Beca become a “rebel girl” cliche. and rebel wilson never lets “pitch perfect” go more than a few bars between laughs. as pieced-together-by-committee as this sometimes feels, “perfect” is never off-key.

Tapas, sushi and libations: Bullish on a trifecta of dining experiences By deidre Schipani Special to The Post and Courier

ismet. fate. Karma. a rainedout riverdogs game. Soggy in the stands. call it what you will, but for robb and wendy walker, it was both love at first sight and love at first bite. That would be charleston and J.paul’z restaurant on James island. The walkers were looking to settle in this area, and a dinner at J. paul’z sealed the deal.

The walkers purchased the popular James island restaurant and in 2012 expanded into mount pleasant on Ben Sawyer Boulevard. J. paul’z mount pleasant is the gateway to the beach, with patio dining, easy parking and a menu that spans the globe and the eating needs of most guests.

The walkers hired monica farrell as executive chef. farrell, whose career includes a stint at the Kiawah island club, cassique and sous chef at halls chophouse, joined the J. paul’z operation in 2011. She set to work creating signature dishes, streamlining the menu and maintaining the small plates guests have come to love while being mindful that those who were not part of the cocktail crowd may very well want “dinner.” on this front, the restaurant offers three dining options. Sushi, under the direction of chef John Browder, provides an expansive menu of choices.

The fish is fresh, and the offerings are familiar. aioli, avocado and cream cheese splash around easily with tobiko (flying fish roe), daikon and eel. and the sushi menu borrows freely from other cuisines. cream cheese frequently provides the mortar that is classically rice’s role: island roll ($9), philadelphia roll ($9) and crunchy lady ($12), for example. for those squeamish about raw fish, the raw is replaced by the cooked: tempura, crab and smoked salmon. rice is cooked with care, acidity is managed with balance and portions are generous. Budd’s island roll ($11) generously serves two and could sample four. it combines the crunch of tempura shrimp, the velvety goodness of salmon and a wasabi-seasoned aioli that we thought could use more heat. But the dish was attractive on the plate and easy on the palate.

The tapas menu has nothing in common with Spain, and “small plates” is

a misnomer as portions are generous. it makes them good for sharing but too large if you plan to sail through a few choices in the tapas fashion.

The trio of dips ($11) demonstrated farrell’s touch: The hummus is lentilbased, pimiento cheese acknowledges location and gouda cheese and caramelized onions kick it up a notch when it comes to queso dip. chicken satays ($11) with their moroccan seasonings and harissaseasoned crema steer away from their indonesian roots. The pan-roasted sea scallops ($12) on a pea and basil puree have been a mount pleasant favorite.

The tuna tartar tostados ($10) layer paper-thin corn chips with avocado, diced lush tuna and a squirt of chipotle creme. The latter was a wonderful flavor foil for the meaty tuna.

The chef mixes it up with ingredients and sauces: morocco and mexico intersect with italy and Japan. Southeast asia visits northeast america. farrell gilds the lily of mac and cheese ($7, $8, $11), toying with truffles and cheeses, adding to the basic and banal of pasta and white sauce.

Salads ($7-$14) are scripted and garnished with a considered intent.

But the dressing served with a shrimp BLt salad ($14) needed more tartness J. Paul’z Restaurant on Ben Sawyer Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. and seasoning. The shrimp and fried green tomatoes were nicely done. entrees bear farrell’s’ culinary education. Layers of flavors, considered cuisine: global ingredients, marriages of food and category: neighborhood Favorite sauce. But the kitchen faltered with location: 1405 ben sawyer blvd., mount pleasant garlic and parmesan fries ($6), whose phone: 884-2425 garlic bits were raw and the rosemaryhours: sunday brunch 11 a.m.-2 p.m., sunday-tuesday 4-10 p.m., seasoned aioli tasted neither of garlic wednesday-saturday 4 p.m.-2 a.m., happy hour monday-Friday 4-7 nor rosemary. Steamed mussels ($12) p.m. brunch at mount pleasant location only shared a similar fate. a seasoned food:  broth was topped with tepid mussels service:  and a hill of tomato chunks contribatmosphere:  uted nothing to the dish. after the untimely death of dave matthews Band saxophonist Leroi moore in 2008, the band released “Big whiskey and the groogrux King,” which was a deeply personal album that the band dedicated to its former member.

Three years later, it appears that matthews and his remaining bandmates are ready to get back to doing what they do best: making fun, loose jam-based rock music. “away from the world” feels more like a classic dmB album than its predecessor.

producer Steve Lillywhite, who helmed classic dmB albums such as “under the table and dreaming” and “crash,” is back after a long absence. and from the album’s first track, “Broken Things,” it is evident that the band is in a better place now.

The album is notable for having a pair of belly songs, the loose and playful “Belly Belly nice,” which features a mean brass riff and funky beat, as well as “Belly full,” which finds matthews alone with his guitar singing about unconditional love as only he can.

other standout tracks include the laid back “mercy” and the very catchy “rooftop.” “if only” may be my favorite track on the album, though, with matthews trying to get back a love that was the best thing he ever had. if you are a fan of dmB’s early albums, you’re going to want to give this one a chance.

the album’s gorgeous title track. for the follow-up album, The avett Brothers decided to stick with what worked, retaining rubin as producer and keeping the musical flavor much the same as before.

The resulting album, “The carpenter,” definitely has its moments.

“Live and die,” with its bouncy tempo and prominent banjo is lovely, as is the sedate “february Seven.”

Surprisingly good and a bit unexpected is “paul newman vs. The demons,” which rocks out to the point of feedback.

overall, though, there is a feeling that this is not quite a fully realized body of work. Several of the songs still feel like demos, especially “i never Knew you” and “down with the Shine.”

That isn’t to say that “The carpenter” isn’t worth a listen, but just don’t expect the beautiful perfection of “i and Love and you.”

to start with, they get things off on the right foot by getting other indie and punk bands to re-imagine the 11 songs on the original soundtrack.

Those darlins do justice to the title track, originally performed by iggy pop, while amanda palmer & The grand Theft orchestra turn in an impressive and intense take on Suicidal tendencies’ “institutionalized.”

Some big names also appear on the cd, including Black francis & Spanish for hitchhiking (“el clavo y La cruz”), mike watt & the Secondmen (“Let’s have a

war”) and matthew Sweet, whose voice is perfectly suited for “hombre Secreto,” the album’s Spanish version of “Secret agent man.” obviously, this album is going to appeal to only a certain segment of the music listening public, but if you’re looking to get back to your punk rock roots, this is an awfully fun way to do so.

The band has amassed a large and loyal following thanks to its amazing live performances and good word of mouth in the americana music community.

That semi-obscurity all but disappeared in 2009 when the band released “i and Love and you.”

That breakthrough album, produced by music guru rick rubin, shot the band to new heights thanks to songs such as “head full of doubt/road full of promise” and

There’s no doubt that athens, ga., has produced some great bands. of course there’s the inevitably mentioned r.e.m., along with of montreal, drive-By truckers and widespread panic, to name a few.

So it should be of no surprise when yet another great band surfaces from the georgia rock mecca. garage-rock trio The whigs have proven to be one of athens’ most promising offspring in recent years. after keeping itself busy early in its career opening for such popular acts as franz ferdinand, maroon 5, the Killers, Barenaked Ladies and Jessica Simpson, The whigs released its sophomore album in 2008 before setting out on a north american tour with rock juggernauts Kings of Leon.

the glam era of hair metal takes center stage

more than two decades later, most of that era’s most prominent rockers are remembered more for their hit songs than any ongoing musical influence. Still, when “here i go again” (whitesnake) or “Sister christian” (night ranger) comes on the radio, even those who were not alive for the heyday of those songs succumb to the urge to sing into their hairbrush microphone or hold an impromptu dance party. it’s glam metal’s enduring legacy that led to the creation and wild success of the Broadway musical “rock of ages,” coming to the north charleston performing arts center tonight and friday.

hen guys such as alice cooper, freddie mercury and david Bowie first painted their faces with makeup and teased their hair to impressive new heights, few could have imagined that the fringe “glitter rock” trend would end up becoming mainstream.

By the ’80s, however, rock ’n’ roll was defined by excessive hair spray and tight leather pants. from Quiet riot to twisted Sister, the squealing electric guitars of these glamorous rockers served as the alternative to the growing electronic beats of please see rocK, page 21 mainstream ’80s pop radio.

rocK from page premiering in July 2005 at the King King club on Los angeles’ hollywood Boulevard, at the heart of the Sunset Strip-based musical’s setting, “rock of ages” jumped to new york in 2008 and opened on Broadway in april 2009. it garnered five tony nominations that year, including Best musical, helping spawn spin-off productions in toronto, australia and an ongoing run in London that began in September 2011.

Likewise, a touring production that began in 2010 continues to make its way around the nation.

Rocker parallels

“i’m blown away that i’ve been doing this for a year now,” said dominique Scott, the actor and singer in the touring ensemble’s lead role of drew. “it’s interesting though; dom (himself) and drew are so similar. if someone were to write a show about dom, it would be ‘rock of ages.’ ” after earning a theater degree at Syracuse university, Scott moved to new york to pursue his dream.

Between recording with his band, domin8trx, and bussing tables at a restaurant in times Square to make ends meet, Scott continued to act and audition for major roles. But his life changed when he landed the starring gig in the “rock of ages” national tour.

Scott’s tale and the “rock of ages” plot line have close parallels. in the musical, set in 1987, drew Boley works at a hollywood club, the Bourbon room, as a busboy. he meets a girl, Sherrie christian, fresh off the bus from Kansas in search of fame as a singer. from there, the show uses songs such as “we’re not gonna take it” (twisted Sister) and “every rose has its Thorn” (poison) to spin the interweaving tale of the Bourbon room’s efforts to remain in business, under pressure from developers and city government, underscored by drew and Sherrie’s romance and quests for musical careers. at one point, drew submits to being in a boy band, while Sherrie takes a job as a stripper. although Scott never stooped to those levels, he has had to make sacrifices for his career. The touring production puts on eight shows each week, a challenge for even the most gifted and disciplined singers. “you learn to pace yourself,” Scott said. “i travel with two hu-

“rock of ages” got another boost of attention when the musical was turned into a film with an all-star cast. released in June, the cast featured tom cruise as Stacee Jaxx, the moody, unpredictable rock-’n’-roll icon and singer of fictional rock band arsenal. in the film, like the musical, the actors sing their own vocals, including russell Brand, alec Baldwin, catherine Zeta-Jones and Julianne hough. attendees of the musical who have seen the film will be surprised by some of the dramatic, and a few subtle, differences

in the story line. although the soundtrack remains much the same, characters and key points in the film plot were altered significantly from the musical’s depiction. “i think the stage version is funnier and more charming,” Scott said. “ ‘rock of ages’ has never been known for its plot; essentially, it’s an excuse for a big rock concert. There’s the boy-falls-in-lovewith-girl, loses-girl, goes-after-girl plot, and a subplot where a german developer wants to kick rock ’n’ roll out off the Sunset Strip, but the focal point is the music.”

The film and stage version include homosexual undertones between various characters, although the musical’s rendering is more subtle than the full-blown make-out session that erupts between Baldwin and Brand during “can’t fight This feeling” (reo Speedwagon) in the film. “when you see our Lonny and dennis do it (the Bourbon room characters who discover their hidden affections for one another), you’re seeing two straight guys have this bromance,” explains Scott. “They’re like the furthest away from what you’d ever think

of homosexuals being like; out of shape, hairy, beer drinking guys, and they’re having this super bromance. That’s where the comedy lies.” with the combined pressure of performing 300 shows each year and giving originality to a storyline many viewers may already have some familiarity with, thanks to the film, Scott said that the cast works to alter their performances each night. he compares the interaction between characters on stage to a game of tennis, where any shot could be straight down the middle or unpredictably off to the side. “you’re always fine-tuning and discovering new moments you can polish to make better,” he said. “with a movie, you’re going for the one perfect choice of how to play a character. with a theater, there are better choices, but not always a consistent best choice. in order to enjoy doing something night after night, you have to always go out with a fresh face and try something new.” at this stage in the tour, Scott said his favorite song to perform is “high enough” by Styx. “it’s by far the hardest song in

the show, to sing in that upper range for an extended period of time,” Scott explains. “it can be a burden if your voice is hurting, but recently i’ve been on fire and loving singing that song.”

The film and musical culminate with “don’t Stop Believin’,” the epic ballad by Journey, although the story’s conclusion and the circumstances behind the characters singing the song are dramatically different between the stage and screen. although Scott is contracted to perform with “rock of ages” through 2013, he said he’ll probably look for something outside of the glam rock genre for his next role. “i’ll listen to all of these songs again, but it might take 30 years,” he laughs. “But part of the reason that ‘rock of ages’ is so successful is because these songs are just so darn popular. i didn’t realize that until i was in the show, but now every time i’m in a Subway or a target, these songs seem to follow me around. ‘The final countdown’ (europe), ‘The Search is over’ (Survivor) and ‘to Be with you’ (mr. Big); these songs are everywhere.”

Gregg allman shakes the blues

regg allman may be 64, but he’s feeling younger than he has in decades. “i’ve got a new lease on life,” he exclaims, chatting on the phone from his home in richmond hill, ga. “i got a new liver, and i’ve been off all the drugs and alcohol for 18 years now, and i feel good every day. and man, i’m writing more and creating more stuff, and i just love it.” after our chat, allman said he planned to “take a nice little putt on one of my motorcycles,” adding, “i just have a good time, every day.”

Some might argue that allman wrote the book on having a good time. as the de facto front man for the allman Brothers Band after the death of his brother, duane, in 1971, allman grew from a shy blond kid from daytona, fla., into the consummate rock star, complete with a heroin addiction and five children born from five different women (none of whom have Southern accents, he laments).

The picture allman paints in his autobiography, “my cross to Bear,” which came out earlier this year, however, reveals the underlying pain that the incessant rambling caused him, emotionally and physically. contracting hepatitis c (likely from a dirty tattoo needle, he hypothesizes) led to tumors on his liver that required a transplant and a total of five surgeries in 2010 and 2011. although his doctors recom-

Before undergoing the surgery, he partnered with producer tBone Burnett to record an album of semi-obscure yet classic blues songs. Burnett pulled together a studio band that included dr. John on piano and doyle Bramhall ii on guitar. dubbing the album “Low country Blues,” allman let the disc, his first new solo recording since 1997, fuel his re-emergence as a new, healthy man. after that grammy-nominated effort, allman capitalized on the new attention with his book release, offering fans an intimate, honest portrait of his relation-

allman from page 22 allman Brothers, because god knows they’re past due for an instudio record.” although the allman Brothers have continued to tour, including an annual string of shows at the Beacon Theatre in new york and their own wanee festival each spring in Live oak, fla., their last studio album was 2003’s “hittin’ the note.” in addition to allman, the band still includes original drummers Butch trucks and Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson.

“By now, everybody’s standards are so high and they’re so picky that you know the next effort should be a real good one,” allman said. “i don’t see how it couldn’t be.”

That same music for the sake of music motivation is evident in allman and Johanson.

Just as allman can’t help but perform despite doctors’ recommendations otherwise, Johanson has put together his Jasssz Band solely for an excuse to jam when the allman Brothers weren’t on the road. he booked the group its first gig in 2006, offering to play for free as long as the club owner

didn’t mind if they repeated songs and used the stage as a practice space. That performance (again, the first ever) was ultimately released as an album, “Live at the double down grill.” “we just wanted a place to play and needed people to play to,” recalls Johanson, speaking from his adopted home in connecticut. “none of us had played together before, but the groove was on.” in late 2011, the Jasssz Band released its first studio album, “renaissance man.” The group’s most prominent member is guitarist and singer Junior mack, whose smooth vocals and soulful touch on the guitar are reminiscent of taj mahal on songs like “Leaving trunk.” opening track “dilemma,” on the other hand, takes cues from the allman Brothers, a la “Les Brers in a minor,” taking advantage of the band’s powerful horn section and Johanson’s intricate percussive touch to control the mood through several shifts in tempo and melody.

“Jazz is about improvisation,” said Johanson, who toured with otis redding before joining the allman Brothers. “it was a word they stuck on black people back

in the day, but i don’t care if it’s hillbilly or what — all music is jazz. i used to watch hank williams Sr. on tV when i was a kid.

(Johanson sings “Jambalaya” into the phone.) They say the allman Brothers invented Southern rock, but if hank ain’t Southern rock, i don’t know what is. and it’s jazz, man.” “renaissance man” includes a bossa nova arrangement of “melissa,” one of the first songs gregg allman ever wrote.

Johanson said he considers allman to be family; in his book, allman states very clearly that Johanson is his favorite member of the allman Brothers. “we were tight, we were a brotherhood, and we all changed each other’s lives in a great way,” Johanson said. “That’s the kind of stuff that happens with families, and the allman Brothers were a real family.” on the phone, allman’s voice lit up when he talked about performing with Johanson. during a few shows together in January, the pair joined each other on stage, a possibility in charleston, “right up the street” from allman’s home outside Savannah.

The performance also marks allman’s third appearance in town in five years, almost to the date. he performed at the north charleston performing arts center in october 2007 with his solo band, returning in august 2011 with the Steve miller Band. reflecting on a long career, allman said he’s just happy to still be singing and performing, hinting that there’s plenty of new music left to come. on “Low country Blues,” allman sings the repeated chorus “i believe i’ll go back home, i believe i’ll go back home, acknowledge that i’ve done wrong.” with “my cross to Bear,” allman put those misgivings out on the table, but they don’t define the book. underneath it all, there’s a joy behind allman’s music that drove him and the band to continually reunite and record so many times since forming in 1969, remaining pioneers even in 2012.

“There are a lot of sad memories in my life,” admitted allman.

“Somehow though, when i think about the past, what always seems to come up is, well — i remember the happy stuff.”
