go paleo at primal games

n its second year, The new primal games, to be held saturday at wando fields on daniel island, is part adventure race, part obstacle course and part strong (wo)man contest with hints of paleolithic survivalism. The spectator-friendly games will consist of multiple events — carrying atlas stones and sandbags, trail runs, multiple wall and rope climbs — throughout the day, with each event containing its own set of tasks. and while it’s not quite a crossfit competition, about 65 percent of its registrants are affiliated with crossfit gyms. The event was started by
Jason Burke, in part to highlight his pocket paleo lines of grass-fed beef jerk and trail food. he expects to expand the games to three other cities next year: possibly charlotte, atlanta and Jacksonville, fla. Burke said that a week before last year’s event, only 30 people had signed up. This
year, the number has jumped to 200. The cap for the event is 250, and registration ends tonight. The event also includes a kid’s primal games, which takes place prior to the adult competition. Burke hopes that the event also helps foster, in a fun way, a return to some of the physical and nutritional habits of ancestors from the paleolithic era. “The games are definitely not for the faint of heart, but that said, all of the events include movements you already know how to do. after all, our caveman ancestors did this each and every day of their lives,” Burke said. find out more at www.the

eventually, diane learns to let her hair down — it goes from stick-straight to messy and wavy, a cheap and easy shorthand — with the help of the town’s hunky musician/ carpenter, Jude (Jeffrey dean Morgan). what he sees in her is baffling: she’s judgmental and morose, but the script calls for her to loosen up and fall in love, so there you have it. Meanwhile, Zoe is initially resistant to the intelligence and charm of the hot local butcher (chace crawford). But eventually she, too, must succumb. plus, he looks like chace crawford, so what more do you need? even nerdy Jake gets to enjoy an awkward fling of his own with a local girl. for a movie that’s supposed to be about complicated issues of family and identity, it’s all very neat and tidy.

here are so many rules for a disney princess. too many for disney’s newest princess, the scottish heroine Merida in “Brave,” to remember. “a princess does not doodle,” her mother lectures in a light scottish burr. “a princess does not chortle.” “a princess does not raise her voice.” But here’s the one that makes the fiery redheaded archer snap: “a princess should not have weapons.” pixar’s first “disney princess” completes the evolution of the studio’s distinctly american take on young womanhood. princesses have evolved from sailorobsessed mermaids to Merida, a spunky, self-assured lass who’d rather eat an arrow than take up with some guy her parents point her way. she has duties, obligations, an arranged marriage to endure. her mother, Queen elinor (voiced by emma Thompson), may insist “we can’t just run away from who we are.” But as Merida narrates, her fate should be her own. “destiny. it’s the one thing we search for, or fight to change.” “Brave” is a spirited scottish-accented romp that packs female empowerment into an amusing tale of youthful impulsiveness and its consequences. The writers and animators
blend the brawny scots humor of “how to train your dragon” with the magic of “The secret of kells” into a story about being brave enough to change your fate. Merida (kelly Macdonald of “nanny Mcphee” and “no country for old Men”) seizes her destiny when her father (Billy connolly) and mom start parading unsuitable suitors before her, a marriage that will keep the peace among the scottish clans. as tradition would have it, the wouldbe-kings compete in feats of strength to win her hand. But she selects one sport where she herself dominates. she hopes to win her independence with a bow. her mom says “nothing doing.” so Merida takes her case to a witch, which is how mum gets turned into a bear. and
since this is the bear-huntinghappy corner of scotland, that’s when “Brave” tumbles into slapstick. Bear gags pile up, and i love the way the animators turn the queen into a critter who can’t shake her dainty manners, or sense of decorum, even in ursine form. Merida has to protect the mother she quarreled with and endangered from a castle-full of burly scotsmen who want a trophy for the castle wall. Merida’s helpmates in all this are her mischievous younger brothers, three wee hellions with can-do attitudes about any prank, hurling themselves into the mayhem. since its inception, no animation house has been as good at telling an adult story for children, as adept at tugging the heartstrings as pixar, and “Brave” continues that tradition. The colors are stunning, the animation lush, photo-realistic and wet. and if they haven’t progressed as far as some in animating the human face, that’s just as well. princesses are supposed to look otherworldly. it’s the destiny of pixar’s “scottish play” to change the way movies, and wide-eyed young viewers, look at “princesses” from now on. They’re beautiful, yes. They’re also smart, self-reliant and able to learn from their mistakes, as long as they’re the ones who get to make those mistakes in the first place.

‘moonrise kingdom’ has youthful spirit By Betsy sharkey Los Angeles Times

t seems fitting that “Moonrise kingdom,” arguably wes anderson’s most grown-up film yet, is a warm and funny fable about kids on the cusp. here, the writer-director’s tendency toward the allegorical casts a magical spell with anderson finding a nearperfect balance between the humanism and the surreal. in this tale about growing up and falling in love, it seems anderson has found his true heart. The story takes place in 1965, when after a year of letters and longing, a couple of 12-year-olds, suzy (kara hayward) and sam (Jared gilman), carry out their plan to run away together. she’s a lonely girl, a voracious reader of grand adventures. he’s a precocious khaki scout in a coonskin cap and horn rims. They are hitting that age when nothing in the world, from the family you’ve got to your own skin, seems to fit anymore. Before it is over, they will carve out their own special place, Moonrise kingdom, as they try to escape a world that tests them and tries to tear them apart. despite all those trials, the environment is pure norman rockwell, painted by as many light moments as dark. The film unfolds in a windswept little-populated swath of rhode island, with rocky inlets and fields of long grass that evoke a more innocent time, as does the emotion between the youngsters. The film’s narrator, played by a heavily bearded Bob Balaban, turns up on the shore looking like a birder on an outing and helps create a sense that this is a land of fables. a theme of storms floods the film, starting with sam and suzy’s first encounter at a church production of noah’s ark. she’s a raven, he’s in the audience. a few words and a few looks are all it takes to make it clear that they are soulmates and that in gilman

lincoln has it out for vampires in thriller

he sun was about to set over Lake pontchartrain on a humid Louisiana day when abraham Lincoln was summoned into action in a grassy field to wrestle to the hard, unforgiving ground the murderous nemesis who took the life of his mother years earlier. Lincoln bellowed with sorrow and rage, pinning an enemy beneath his considerable weight. This was not the weathered president struggling to bear up under the agonizing grief of a bloody and brutal civil war. This was a young man primed for a fight to the death. funny thing, though: no one in the assembled crowd of onlookers seemed to bat an eye that honest abe was facing off against a vampire. such is the straight-faced approach to the somewhat ridiculous-sounding “abraham Lincoln: vampire hunter,” 20th century fox’s 3-d adaptation of seth grahame-smith’s novel due in theaters friday. on the set, the movie’s creative team took great pains to render the outre premise with gravitas, complete with some 8,000 hand-made period costumes and axes forged using 19th-century techniques, arguing that the film should be more than a wink-
four months. it was during that time that producers tim Burton and Jim Lemley contacted him with the idea of turning it into a film, and he expressed interest in writing the screenplay. ith chipotle’s arrival to the charleston area, it’s nice to finally determine whether the uber-popular Mexican chain warrants the hype. to be honest, i don’t understand the madness. The food is light, crispy (when necessary) and flavorful. it’s good, not great. it’s certainly better than Moe’s and Qdoba, a bit better than Barberitos (minus the tomatillo sauce). But it’s not quite up there with freebirds, which is on the west coast and in texas. visit if you get a chance. as a consumer, i certainly appreciate chipotle’s easyto-follow menu in big, bright

Mini-corn “dawgs” ($5.95) also make good companions to the ubiquitous $1 pBr cans. nachos ($6.95) are fresh, warm and nicely layered with cheese, chili, green onions, salsa, jalapenos, olives and sour cream: generous enough to share or a tex-Mex lunch or dinner option. salads are a basic greek ($6.75) or chicken salad platter ($6.95), and either can be ordered as a wrap or a stuffing for a pita pocket. chips and pickles are the dedicated “sides,” and the salads are made fresh inhouse, and it shows. plump, tender chunks of chicken spilled out from the “sammie” ($6.95) layered with lettuce and tomato. Bread choices include white, wheat, pita, wrap, sub roll and croissant. They cheerfully toasted the bread and managed to serve the sandwich while a trace of warmth remained in the bread. The same could be said for the harbor Burger ($7.25), served on a sesame seed bun. cooked to order, it traveled from kitchen to table in a welcomed envelope of heat. paninis ($6.95) are grilled, not pressed, and layered on thick-cut texas toast. The kitchen will make any bread substitution you care to have. But don’t let the name st. Johns yacht harbor fool you. you don’t have to own a hinckley picnic Boat to drop anchor here. hey, you don’t even need to own a pleasure craft. if yours is an appetite for water views and the simple pleasures of home cooking, the stono Breeze is your kind of spot. The stono Breeze is just past headquarters island perched above the stono river and is a simple, casual spot. an outdoor deck wraps around the building, leading to the “aqua bar,” where high-top tables allow for delightful water views. nautical flags wave colorful messages around the perimeter of the secondstory deck, and wellseasoned teak furnishings bear witness to the effects of heat and humidity on anything at the mercy of the elements. The staff had the happy energy of counselors at a sailing camp as they awaited the first crop of campers. The sheer pleasure of their water-surrounded culinary aerie and the happy satisfaction of providing hospitality to landlubbers and old salts alike put everyone in a good mood. The menu is an uncomplicated one. appetizers are dip-centric ($6.95) and change daily. They are served with your choice of captains wafers (how appropriate), chips or pita wedges. after years of lurking just below the surface of stardom, grace potter & the nocturnals finally broke through with its self-titled 2010 album. Thanks to almost constant touring and the catchiness of songs such as “paris (ooh La La),” potter and her band have finally started to enjoy the fruits of their labors. The band’s latest studio effort, “The Lion The Beast The Beat,” continues the momentum put forth by the last release. sounding like a slightly more soulful version of sheryl crow, potter has one of those voices that sounds just as good belting out a bluesy rock number as it does crooning an r&B tune. it can be smooth as honey one moment and sufficiently ragged the next, and in a live setting the woman is a force of nature. a good portion of the power from that live act carries over into “The Lion The Beast The Beat,” and the variety of songs is once again a top selling point here. The leadoff title track builds slowly before finally kicking into overdrive almost two minutes in. i suspect that this tune will make for an amazing opening song at future potter performances. The lightly funky “never go Back” follows, which in turn gives way to the popish “parachute heart” and the soulful “stars.” The rest of the album continues to see potter & the nocturnals acting like a band with multiple personality disorder, jumping from one genre to another. The shifting of styles does have the occasional misstep. an alternate version of “stars” with kenny chesney is painfully out of place, and while it’s cool that potter had the chance to record with country legend willie nelson, the resulting song, “ragged company,” is forgettable. still, there is enough on this new release to warrant checking it out if you enjoyed the last album. The truth is grace potter & the nocturnals is a band that is best experienced live, and hopefully the band’s touring schedule will bring them back to the Lowcountry soon. should that happen, don’t miss it.

when the local band crowfield released its debut, “goodbye, goodnight, so Long Midwestern,” in 2008, the album was a ridiculously good collection of roots rock songs that called to mind classic acts such as The Band and John Mellencamp. crowfield’s self-titled sophomore release took the band’s sound in a much more contemporary direction. now comes “The diamond sessions,” which combines the best parts of the previous albums, while also taking new creative steps. Lead singer tyler Mechem kicks off the cd singing almost in a whisper at the start of “catching up,” until drummer parker gins comes in with a snare drum roll, and suddenly the listener is immersed in the sound that made them fall in love with this band. The new album is deeply personal on just about every level, including its title. “The diamond sessions” refers to Johnny diamond, a well-known manager and mentor of local acts who passed away last fall. crowfield was one of the many bands diamond championed, and the band includes a heartfelt thank-you message to him in the cd’s liner notes. elsewhere on the album there is no shortage of catchy, roots rock-flavored songs. There are a few nice touches, including string sections on some songs and horns on others. particularly great are the very catchy “change of heart” with its subtle horns, as well as the sweeping “Black hills,” which Mechem calls “my opus.” far and away the best song on the album is “Measure of a Life,” which will likely have you replaying it more than a few times as you marvel at its subtle genius. possibly the best thing about “The diamond sessions” though is that this is an album that begs to be listened to from beginning to end. doing so truly brings out the collective beauty of this aural gem. crowfield will be holding a cd release party, which will include a live performance, at 2 p.m. saturday at Monster Music, 46 orleans road.
sometimes when making an album, a band tries so hard to impress that it all but beats the listener over the head with its ambition. There’s an art to introducing yourself to the world through your music, and the road to success is littered with independent releases that either tried too hard or didn’t give enough. The local musicians in shatterdog definitely seem to have found that happy medium on the band’s debut, “fisticuffsmanship.” consisting of multi-instrumentalist george stevens, bassist Mcgregor Jordan, guitarist dan crawford and drummer Brent caldwell, the music on “fisticuffsmanship” (try saying that five times fast) is the sort of folk-rock that sounds great coming from the speakers on a lazy sunday, or over a car stereo on a road trip. The musicians don’t limit themselves to a single sound, kicking things off with “archery,” which is reminiscent of roots acts such as old crow Medicine show, but then quickly shifting to tunes such as “honeybrain” and “Thing she does,” which are reminiscent of bands such as The samples and toad the wet sprocket, respectively. further in, “world gets ready” provides a lightly psychedelic throwback sound that works well. even later into the album things are still catchy, especially on the excellent “rebecca with results.” one gets the feeling that rather than trying to kick in the door in an attempt to introduce itself to local music listeners, the members of shatterdog are instead offering this agreeable debut as a friendly handshake. smart move.

s crowfield prepares to release its third full-length album, “The diamond sessions,” fans of the popular local act might not realize how close they came to never getting the chance to hear the new songs. when crowfield released its self-titled sophomore album last year, they had been signed to a major label and dropped almost immediately, which is a strangely common occurrence these days in the music business. But there were other things happening, as well, things that threatened to end the band. sitting in the living room of his west ashley home, crowfield frontman tyler Mechem is blunt about the events that nearly led to the band’s demise. “Joe was leaving the band,” said Mechem, referring to his longtime musical partner, pianist Joe giant, “and the expectation was that the band would be done after the second album.” according to Mechem, giant’s passion had shifted to a path outside the band. “we had an emotional conversation about it,” Mechem said, smiling. after giant announced he was leaving crowfield, Mechem admits it took awhile for the realization to sink in. “i didn’t take it to heart for a long time,” he said. “i was ready to sell all of my gear after the second album was finished. i’m not sure what i would have done; maybe moved out to the Midwest and forgot i was a musician.” Thankfully, Mechem changed his mind. “There were no big follow-up plans, but once the second album was re-

eographically speaking, phrases such as “the last frontier” are nearly moot in 2012. we’ve traversed, mapped and calculated the resource potential of nearly all of earth’s surface. Musically, however, artists continue to discover new territory every year. still, that doesn’t mean that the styles of previous generations have outlived their viability. The explorers club doesn’t sound like any other band you’ll hear in charleston, but you may recognize a few tricks borrowed from a bygone era. songwriter Jason Brewer won’t shy away from the inevitable comparisons to The Beach Boys. harmony-rich songs like “run run run” and “anticipatin’ ” from The ex-
plorers club’s sophomore release, “grand hotel,” released in february, could easily be tracks off a classic disc by the ’60s favorites. That’s been an advantage and a hindrance to The explorers club’s growth. on the one hand, music-lovers of all shapes and stripes immediately recognize the quality of the music and its ability to transcend generational preferences. But on the other, how exactly do you a market a band of 20- and 30-somethings playing a musical style from 50 years ago?

Brewer is arguably one of the most knowledgeable historians of The Beach Boys’ career, emulating their arrangements into his own music to the point that it’s obvious within seconds of listening to an explorer’s club track. “There are moments on the record that are really strong, but a lot of it sounds like ’90s adult contemporary radio with Beach Boys harmony involved,” Brewer said. “That said, i’m a fourth generation Beach Boys fan, 40 years removed from when it was happening; but it just doesn’t appeal to me. “i think they may have blown an opportunity to make one last great record, and, instead, they made an interesting record that doesn’t have much greatness about it.” Brewer is clear to mention that he thinks “That’s why
god Made the radio” is 95 percent better than most of what’s currently on the radio, but he can’t judge it as just a new record. “i’m judging it as a new Beach Boys record,” Brewer said. “still, 15 years from now, i will probably appreciate it a lot more than i do right now.” That’s because, for now, Brewer is busy judging his own output as stringently as he does his idols’ (and making music that stands proudly with them). for “grand hotel,” he recruited several members of wilson’s backing band to fill out the sound during overdubs in Los angeles. he even had the chance to meet wilson on several occasions. keeping with its motif, The explorer’s club released “grand hotel” not only digitally and on cd, but on vinyl, cassette and even 8-track. despite his mixed-reviews of The Beach Boys’ latest efforts, he still hopes “That’s why god Made the radio” succeeds, inspiring new fans to discover the old treasures as well as charleston’s own The explorers club.

ate June is a little quiet in the arts world. i suppose everyone is still recovering from spoleto and trying to get some beach time in.
sandpiper gallery
for the past 11 years, the sandpiper gallery has been a staple of sullivan’s island. This saturday, from 6-8 p.m., join it for the grand opening of their new (and even better) location near station 22 restaurant and across the street from poe’s tavern. in conjunction with the opening celebration, it also will be featuring a new collection of oil Prattpaintings from Thomas local artist Leslie pratt-Thomas and a book signing by new york times best-selling author Mary alice Monroe. pratt-Thomas had not initially set out to create an exhibit featuring hearts. gallery owner Julie sweat explains that the artist “arrived at the theme of this show after noticing a recurring visual revealing itself in many of her paintings.” pratt-Thomas herself said, “representational painting is generally composed of four geometric shapes: the sphere, the cylinder, the cone and the cube. “for example, in the figure, the head is a sphere, the body is a cube, and arms, legs, fingers and toes are cylinders. a pear is a sphere with a cone on top ... you get the idea. as a painter, i look for these shapes and the way light defines them.” within the last year, she said she has been noticing a heart shape in many of her pieces, sometimes “within the branches of trees, the edges of petals, the angle of a bird’s wing.” This is how the “heart shaped world” exhibit came to be born. obviously, the heart is a symbol of love in our culture, so this show very logically paired with Monroe’s latest romance novel, “Beach house Memories,” the sequel to “The Beach house.”

In today’s deal, North’s raise to two hearts is the most flexible action with a single spade guard, even though three no-trump would have been an easier spot as the cards lie. How would you play the heart game when West leads the spade king? Suppose you win with the ace and begin to draw trumps. The 4-1 break means you will not be able to set up a 10th trick in diamonds before you have lost control of the hand. So after winning thespadelead,youshouldimmediately lead a low diamond to the nine. West wins with the jack and persists with another spade. You ruffinhandandplaythreerounds of trumps, leaving East with the trump 10, and yourself with the
jack. You then cross to dummy with the club king and lead another low diamond, hoping to see an honor appear from East. East produces a low diamond, but you guess to put in the eight, which forces West’s ace. West now leads a spade, which you ruff with your last trump (the jack), but when you play the diamond king, the suit proves to have been 3-3. East is welcome to ruff the fourth round of diamonds with his established trump 10 because he will have no spade to return. So the game comes home. The moral is that whenever it may take some time to establish a neededtrickinasidesuit,consider playing on the side suit before drawing all the trumps.

The nBa finals could end this week if Miami, especially LeBron James, plays the way it has in games two and three, but we’re kind of hoping oklahoma city pushes them to a seventh game.
