The ownership of cattle lies at the very heart of African indigenous cultures. Cattle are more than merely gorgeous creatures each individually coloured, named and gazed upon with love as they return to the boma each evening. They are also more meaningful than mere suppliers of protein in the form of milk. Cattle are essential to the functioning of many institutions which govern all the aspects of the lives of Africa’s rural inhabitants. Cattle ‘units of value’ allow sophisticated barter-based economics to function. Claim to paternity of children through the payment of Lobola to the father of the wife is a continent-wide tradition; similarly widespread is the slaughtering of beasts to mark the rites of passage of people from birth through initiation, marriage, the birth of children and finally death. Life without cattle would be untenable, even unthinkable, in Africa.
