Self Care is Self Love
Shower and head to sleep sort of night? Or is it a hot bath filled with bath salts, multiple scented candles lit, and soft music playing in the background kind of night? This, my friends, is just one of the many activities that fall under that pink umbrella we call “self care”. No, it’s not always an hour spent face masking while eating a pint of ice cream; or binge watching Friends for the sixth time. Sometimes it’s saying no to that dinner you were supposed to go to, reading that book you’ve been putting off, or taking a walk and letting your mind roam free.
While we have definitely entered a culture that is more focused on ourselves (thanks, selfies) often times we forget that we need to actually care for ourselves. “Self care” is a relatively new term, bubbling up in the era of Instagram worthy spas, Instagram worthy face masks, and Instagram this and that. Yet, while made prominent on social media, it’s more important than we think. We drain ourselves every day. Some of us work long hours for a paid job and others long hours for our kids. On top of that, we fit in social hours with our friends to the point that being with those you love feels like just another bullet point on the schedule. In order to be the best version of yourself and offer that to those around you, you come first.
Placing yourself first can be daunting. We are constantly working for other people whether it be our employers, our kids, our partners, etc. Yet, former First Lady Michelle Obama said it best when she wrote on her Instagram: “in order for me to be at my best for others around me, I needed to find some time for myself.” While it can be challenging to start and addicting when you do, personal wellness has to be a priority when wanting a happier lifestyle. There are two primary reasons for adding something, however small it may be for personal wellness. Knowing your worth and actually living your life. Know your worth. Self care stresses the importance of a relationship with yourself. Beginning this healthy relationship will lead to a boost in self confidence and higher self esteem, reminding yourself that you are also a priority.
Live your life. It’s an overused phrase, but it’s not practiced as often as it’s preached. Too often we go by our days breathing through them, merely existing when this world around us is too beautiful to do just that. Life is a gift. Yes, you do have responsibilities like cleaning the house, taking out the trash, or walking the dog; but don’t forget to remember that you are also a responsibility. It’s the small things that revive your brain and give you the fresh start that is long overdue. Remind yourself of the things that make you smile: whether it’s your favorite ice cream flavor or a show you’ve seen a hundred times. They bring you joy and that’s reason enough to make time for them. After all, how does that song go? “These are a few of my favorite things”?
