FALL/WINTER SESSIONS

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Cindy Mochizuki: stories best told at twilight

Some stories are best told at twilight. As the sun sets below the horizon and darkness emerges, the veil lifts between the everyday and the spirit realm. Supernatural creatures inhabit our world: haunting dreams, inspiring songs and stories, appearing in the pages of legends and recounted through the memories of elders. This magic manifests in the whimsical storytelling of artist Cindy Mochizuki.

stories best told at twilight focuses on the artist’s telling of Japanese myths, legends and folklore. Each artwork—which might manifest as a short animation, an elaborate installation or a singular performance—is the result of an abundance of images and objects that came before. This solo exhibition goes behind the curtain, taking a rare look at the artist’s usually hidden creative process and spanning artworks created over more than a decade.

Workshops Available September 11 - November 15, 2024

FALL/WINTER SESSIONS

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Ruth Beer: Seep | Swell

An exhibition in two parts

The Art Gallery at Evergreen in Coquitlam and the Burnaby Art Gallery co-present the exhibition Ruth Beer: Seep | Swell, an exhibition in two parts. For decades, Beer has used sculpture to explore the depictions, constructs and myths of landscape. Her dynamic practice revolves around an ecological examination of our rapidly transforming Pacific Northwest region.

Beer’s early explorations of minimalist abstract and elemental forms have evolved into an interest in materials and their relationship to culture and society. Through an array of materially seductive artworks—glistening copper weavings, tapestries, bronze and ceramic stones, woven photographs and prints on paper—Beer offers timely reflections on themes related to belonging, human-land relationships and the pressing climate crisis.

FALL/WINTER SESSIONS

ABSTRACT PRINTMAKING

Reflecting on Ruth Beer’s response to the landscape, students will create a unique piece of artwork that explores the concept of materials through printmaking and patterns. By incorporating various textures and colors, students will be able to create visually captivating layers within their artwork. Emphasizing abstract elements encourages a deeper exploration of shape and form, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.

Available December 09, 2024 - February 07, 2025.

CLAY TILE

Discover a variety of stamping, texturing, and joining techniques while making your own unique clay place. Pathways appear everywhere –through waterways, forest trails, cities, and more. Students will consider types of pathways and how we can express pathways through clay scenes.
