While primarily working with photography, interdisciplinary artist Rebecca Bair uses a multitude of mediums to push the boundaries of how Blackness is represented in her solo exhibition, Where the Light Meets My Shoulder. Her work continues a legacy of refusal and resilience by exploring her identity through recurring imagery of her coily hair, the sun, shadows and circles. Bair plays with abstraction to negotiate what can be seen and what is withheld.

Paths What story does a pathway tell? How do paths connect us? Paths features artwork by twenty-two Canadian artists exploring paths, both real and imagined, through the mediums of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, collage and printmaking. The exhibited works show us that a path can be used to communicate a direction, a line of thought or a plan for action. Paths can also be seen in representations of the natural world, taking the form of forest trails, migratory patterns, maps and waterways, as well as within our built environment. We can find pathways through abstraction by exploring gesture, pattern, line and form and we can seek our own paths of understanding through personal journeys and the creative process. Paths, a teaching exhibition organized and circulated by Artists for Kids and The Gordon Smith Gallery, is curated by Amelia Epp, a District 44 visual art teacher, to offer opportunities for cross-curricular, place-based inquiry as well as rich connections to social and emotional learning.

“Thank you for making our fieldtrips so meaningful and related to the curriculum.” -GLEN ELEMENTARY, GRADE 1

SPRING WORKSHOPS MAY 29 - JUNE 14, 2024 unearthed: Mitra Mahmoodi & Jamal Tabasinejad

Adobe buildings, unfamiliar to the wet, mild climate of British Columbia, are a fixture of Iranian desert architecture. This sophisticated and ancient architectural style uses sun-dried clay bricks to fashion a diverse array of structures, from humble domes to vast citadels and intricate ziggurats. The magic of adobe has captured the imagination of Iranian Canadian artists, painter Jamal Tabasinejad and ceramic artist Mitra Mahmoodi. This exhibition explores the artists’ shared fascination with adobe architecture through representation in painting and abstraction in sculpture.

DRAWING PLAYGROUND Explore drawing techniques inspired by the artwork and themes in unearthed. Through a variety of drawing activities, students will explore how to represent architectural forms and themes by going back to the basics of line, shape, shading, mark making, and more.
