Irreverently witty and outright uproarious, Avenue Q is the musical story of Princeton, a brighteyed college graduate who arrives in New York City looking for love, a job, and his purpose in life. The only neighbourhood he can afford is the multicultural Avenue Q, where Sesame Street-esque puppets rub shoulders with humans. Part felt, part flesh, Avenue Q is packed with songs that are surprisingly poignant and only occasionally politically correct. Warning: full puppet nudity and other vulgarities will induce laughter. 18+ only.

PACIFIC SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE A Co-Presentation with Evergreen Cultural Centre Founded in 1981 by conductor Maurice Backun, it was a group of talented wind and percussion players looking for musical challenges that brought the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble (PSWE) into being. Over twenty years later, the ensemble has grown and matured to the point where it takes a leading role in music education in British Columbia and is committed to supporting Canadian composers. Yet the ensemble remains true to its roots – providing its members the chance to get together and play challenging wind music.

MAMA WON’T FLY
STAGE 43
By Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope & Jamie Wooten | Directed by Dale Kelly October 16-19 + 22-25, 2014 An outrageously hilarious race against the clock begins when Savannah Sprunt Fairchild Honeycutt agrees to get her feisty mother all the way from Alabama to California in time for her brother’s wedding. Savannah’s problem: Mama won’t fly. With only four days to make it to the ceremony, this determined daughter has no choice but to drive cross-country with her equally willful mother, Norleen Sprunt, in Mama’s vintage sedan. This ferociously funny, family-friendly comedy will have you laughing your way across the country and all the way down the aisle!
STEEL MAGNOLIAS
By Robert Harling | Directed by Jacqollyne Keath January 15-18 + 21-24, 2015 Truvy’s Beauty Salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana is where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s most interesting characters. With hilarious repartee and humorously revealing verbal collisions, this eclectic group of women draw on their underlying strength – and love – to get them through the good times and bad.
SECRETS OF A SOCCER MOM
By Kathleen Clark | Directed by Stephen Torrence April 23-26 + April 29 - May 2, 2015 Three engaging women reluctantly take the field in a “mothers versus sons” soccer game. They intend to let the children win, but as the game unfolds it’s the women who become intent on scoring. The competition ignites a fierce desire to recapture their youthful good humor, independence and sexiness, paving the way toward a better understanding of themselves, their families, and changes they need to make in their lives. A show that puts the heart and “sole” into comedy. 31
ART GALLERY AT EVERGREEN Into its eighteenth year, the Art Gallery at Evergreen (AGE) continues to bring the work of contemporary artists to audiences in Coquitlam and environs through a collection of thoughtful and thought-provoking exhibitions.
Following the eagerly anticipated presentation of Emerging Talent 18, the AGE’s spring exhibitions literally and figuratively shift perspectives. The exhibition of new and recent work by Ben Reeves presents a complex arrangement of his paintings that appear to shift into new configurations with each step through the gallery. In the following two-person exhibition, fibre artists Christie Lim and Shamina Senaratne each employ layers of transparency and translucency that, with each change in a viewer’s position, reconfigure the relationships within and between works. 2014/2015 also brings some new things to the AGE. Our opening receptions for all exhibitions are now held on Saturday afternoons, 2-5pm. The popularity of our receptions has continued to increase as they provide an inviting social space and time to come together around contemporary art. In the summer of 2014, the AGE received a significant upgrade with the installation of a new LED gallery lighting system. The lighting system exceeds our demands for the care and conservation of the art works on exhibition, and as befits our Evergreen name, dramatically reduces our energy consumption and impact on the environment. The AGE’s slate of exhibitions is accompanied by a rich and varied program of educational and public engagement activities that affirm the AGE as a welcome gathering place for people to come together to experience and exchange ideas about the art of our time.

The collection of five glaciers that make up the ancient features of Jumbo, or “Qat’muk”, are left over from the last ice age. Now, they are under immediate threat from climate change and resort development. Over thirty-seven minutes, Requiem for a Glacier features panoramic glacier views along with the sounds and images of the oratorio, as performed by the Requiem Volunteer Orchestra and Chorus (conducted by Ajtony Csaba of the University of Victoria Symphony). SOME INTERSECTIONS Erin McSavaney
November 8 - December 31, 2014 Opening Reception: Saturday, November 8, 2014, 2-5pm Family Days: Saturday, November 15, 2014, 1-4pm + Saturday, December 13, 2014, 1-4pm Some Intersections features a series of paintings and audio works that show familiar but rarely remarked upon landscapes, carved out by privately-owned cars across cities. These are landscapes where the cold concrete geometry of highway corridors and thoroughfares intersect with the unrestrained, organic forms of nature. In McSavaney’s paintings, the division between the varying shades of grey hard-edge walls and asphalt roads is frequently ruptured by the encroachment of overhanging green trees and the eccentric dark shadows that they cast. In each of his audio compositions, McSavaney has created pieces that at once, with eyes closed, create aural landscapes on their own while also, with eyes open, provide a soundtrack to the collection of paintings. Below: Erin McSavaney, Oriole Park (detail), acrylic on canvas, 48” x 30”, 2013.

OBJECT THINGS Ben Reeves
March 21 - May 9, 2015 Opening Reception: Saturday, March 21, 2015, 2-5pm Family Day: Saturday, April 11, 2015, 1-4pm + Saturday, May 9, 2015, 1-4pm Object Things features a collection of new and recent paintings by Vancouver artist Ben Reeves. In one painting, Reeves depicts a street scene swept by rain. The surface of the painting is dappled by minute, thickly painted raindrops. A sideways glance at another work reveals a single drop of rain drawn from this scene but enlarged to about fifty times the size. Reeves has been preoccupied throughout his work with the ways in which the material of paint can be used to transform a thing into an object. The paintings are provocatively configured where the experience of one painting transforms the experience of each and every other painting.

HERE AND THROUGH AND BACK AND THROUGH Christie Lim and Shamina Senaratne
May 23 - July 11, 2015 Opening Reception: Saturday, May 23, 2015, 2-5pm Family Day: Saturday, June 13, 2015, 1-4pm + Saturday, July 11, 2015, 1-4pm In this two-person exhibition, Port Moody artist Shamina Senaratne and Burnaby artist, Christie Lim present a collection of their respective new works in fibre. While each artist’s voice and body of work is distinct, Senaratne and Lim both work with layers of meaning and material. The transparency and translucency of the fabric they each frequently work with immediately reveals how each work has been made and how looking and seeing through words and images changes meanings. And, through a unique installation, each artist’s work will also be seen through the work of the other. 38
