In ROOF, a humorous yet socially conscious one-person show, Lucas Myers weaves together elements of standup comedy, physical theatre, and his trademark brand of observational humour to tell the story of Dave and Stevie.
Dave is a highly successful real estate agent who is living the dream: hot car, great kids, beautiful wife, gorgeous sound system, designer kitchen. Just as he is about to launch his own self-improvement video series, #HiMyNameIsDave, he discovers major issues with his roof and cracks begin to form in his perfect world. Enter Stevie, a journeyman roofer with aspirations of being a stand-up comic, and the only person capable of dealing with Dave’s narcissistic hyper vigilance. As they attempt to collaborate on the roof project, Stevie forces Dave to confront his shortcomings and come to terms with what being a “good person” really means.
As their initial views of each other are challenged, ROOF examines our preconceptions around mental health, addiction, and homelessness as the characters are forced to confront their own assumptions.
Lucas Myers has been creating theatre since his graduation from the National Theatre School in 1998. Working with Theatre SKAM in Victoria, he performed and composed music for many original plays.
In 2001 his interests turned to collaborative creation and he studied with the SITI Company of New York, returning to the West Coast to apply their techniques with like-minded artists. Having relocated to Nelson, BC, he has dedicated his energy to creating a new work that is engaging and accessible and touring it throughout BC.
