KIM

GORDON

We sat down with Kim Gordon, lead bass player for Sonic

Youth, who we believe is one of the most influential women in rock history. Born in Rochester, New York, but growing up in Los Angeles, California, she had a growing passion for art and music. She pursued this passion by attending Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. During her college endeavor as a Fine Arts Major, she participated in a performance art piece, including her being a part of an all girl band. Through this, she met her future band mates, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo. The three became Sonic Youth in 1981. We decided to speak about Kim’s clothing line, which is now making a comeback. In 1993, Gordon launched her first clothing line titled “X-Girl”. This line took inspiration from a strictly male street wear company called “X-Large” and is later known as their sister brand. Daisy von Furth styled X-Girl, and it took off almost immediately. Backed by stars such as Sofia Coppola and Chloe Sevigny, it was the epitome of every cool girls closet in the ‘90s, and it was affordable. The brand was based in Los Angeles, but soon had a New York store on Lafayette. It featured simple grungy looks. Tight fitted T-shirts, sweatshirts, mini skirts and A-Line dresses with X-Girl plastered across the front. Sevigny during an interview, completely in X-Girl exclaimed: “They were going almost for an androgynous kind of look, these very simple A-line dresses that were very Godard.” Kim Gordon continues to strive and expand her creative ventures, and is beyond excited to start working with X-Girl again, stating: “In a way X-Girl gave me far more notoriety than Sonic Youth ever did.” 2b

All the items in his first collection are cut and sewn in New York City. The collection is set to release in June in the End Studios Pop Up shop and all other retailers in July.
