Types of Dental Implants Dental implants are surgically placed dental devices used to support dental prostheses, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. They can be made of titanium metal alloys, high-grade silicon dioxide ceramics (CEREC), or a combination of both materials.

Dental implants were first designed and manufactured in the 1950s by Swedish dental surgeon Per-Ingvar Branemark. He believed that if dental implants could stay in contact with living bone long enough, the bone would grow into and around the implant making it virtually inseparable. He was right; dental implants have been successfully placed throughout the world for over five decades. Dental implants are devices which enable dental restoration in areas where a tooth has been lost. Dental implant materials allow dentist to restore or replace missing teeth with dental crowns, bridges, dental prostheses, and dental functional appliances that function with the same biomechanical properties as natural teeth.

Three types of dental implants 1. Intraosseous Implants 2. Subperiosteal Implants 3. Transbuccal Implants.

Intraosseous dental implants are placed directly in especially to the jawbone, without any soft tissue (gum) covering them. Subperiosteal are those dental implants, which sit on top of the gum but under the bone, using a periosteal flap to cover it. Transbuccal - A subperiosteal implant that does not need an osteotomy or subperiosteal dissection for placement, because it is put in through healthy hard tissue.

Uses of Dental Implants Dental implants can replace missing teeth, help you speak correctly by reestablishing the correct bite, improve your ability to chew hard food, make you less prone to bone loss or destruction from dental decay or gum disease, and give you back a healthy smile says dentist Everton park.
